Introduction (skip if you are only interested in the battle report)
Spoiler:
Sister Superior Rosetta grimaced after reading the parchment handed to her by a missionary standing before her. The missionary appeared to be a young woman in her early thirties draped dull robes with a rosaries dangling over her neck.

“By the powers endowed by the Ecclesiarch, the Order of Faith is to aid missionary Uriana Jacobus in her pursuit to spread the light of the Emperor to far reaches of the galaxy,” Rosetta read aloud.

Uriana nodded in delight. “Precisely, she replied, “Now let’s commence our glorious task in vanquishing heretics and bringing the lost back into our fold!”

Rosetta’s shoulders sag and her head bowed down in disbelief. The Order of Faith had a long illustrious history thanks to Saint Dianus. The late living Saint had leads the Order through innumerous battles across multiple galaxies. With each victory, the Order of Faith’s influence and size grew, turning the lessor Order into a Major Order Militant that rivaled six others.

However, a few months ago during a major conflict against a daemonic infestation on a Shrine World in the Segmentum Obscurus, Saint Dianus mysteriously disappeared on the eve of victory.

Jy2's battle report featuring his Daemons vs. my Sisters:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/605575.page

Without her leadership, the Ecclesiarch eagerly appointed one of its agents to take command of Order of Faith in their never-ending Wars of Faith.

To make matters worse, that agent turned out to be the Uriana Jacobus, a naïve and ignorant missionary with a notable reputation for stirring trouble. Her victories were only accounted by the heroic actions of the unlucky soldiers who were impress into Uriana’s services.

“With all due respect, missionary,” Rosetta quietly said, “The Order of Faith is in the midst of appointing a new Canoness and your leadership is not needed.”

Uriana’s beaming face transformed into a dark shadow. “Whether your order possess a Canoness or not bears no weight to my authority,” she screamed. “By the power of the Ecclesiarch, you will follow my command.”

Rosetta bowed her head for the second time. Her long bangs drip over, concealing her face full of frustration. “Yes missionary,” she replied in a sour tone.”

“That’s mistress to you,” snarled Uriana. “I expect your utmost obedience and you will address me as you would to your superior.”

“Yes mistress,” Rosetta quietly replied.

……….

Several weeks later, the Black Ship Eternal appears out of the warp above a newly discovered feral world. Soon after, a second Vengeance Class Grand Cruisers appears next to her. Both ships establish communications.
“Magos Explorator Omar, what a surprise!” greeted Rosetta.

“Sister Rosetta, likewise,” replied Omar in a deep metallic voice. “My condolence for your order’s lost. Dianus was a close friend and a staunch ally.”

Rosetta nodded her head in agreement. “She will be missed. Her presence is needed more than ever now that a stubborn fool has taken her place. I fear Uriana Jacobus will lead the Order of Faith to ruin.”

Omar chuckled. Rosetta was taken back the Tech-priest’s humanly gesture, which seemed backwards to his Machine Cult’s endeavors to strip away all humanity and become one with machine.

“While the missionary may appear young and brash, she possesses much experience on the battlefield,” said Omar.

“That remains to be seen,” chided Rosetta.
“Enough talks about your distaste over your new commander,” said Omar, “I wish to invite you onto my ship. I have a little present, which help you on your missions.”

Rosetta raised her eyebrows with curiosity. “Oh? What will that be?”

Omar chuckled again. “See for yourself”

…..

Deep within the bowels of Omar’s ship, the Tech-priest and Sister stood in front an ancient door leading to a hanger bay. Omar muttered a few prayers, causing the vacuum doors to slide open. Omar lead the Sister down a metal gangway.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but you are strong candidate within your order to become its next Canoness,” inquired Omar.

Rosetta frowned. I’m not privy to matters of the upper echelon within my order, but they convene as we speak and will decide who’ll fill the Canoness’ position. I’m skeptical they’ll pick me. My experience pales in comparison to more senior Sisters.

Omar halted midway down on the metal gangway. Rosetta could sense a vast open space surrounding them, but it was too dark to make out what lie behind the darkness.

“If it’s experience you lacked, then it’s experience you’ll gain in your coming trails with our good missionary friend,” said Omar. “I offer you this as a gift.”

Omar snapped his fingers, causing the hanger lights to switch on. Rosetta was blinded temporarily. When her eyes became accustomed to the setting, she gasped at what she saw. Before her parked row upon row of Repressor tanks. Far in the back stood a giant metallic behemoth armed with a long battle cannon in one arm and a massive chain blade in the other.

“If you are elevated to Canoness, I hope you’ll remember this and return the favor one of these days,” beamed Omar.

…..

A couple hours later, Rosetta met Uriana on Eternal’s bridge. The Sister was dazed after parting with Omar, but seeing the missionary snapped her in focus. She was still skeptical of the Uriana and wondered what the Tech-priest saw in her.

“Sister, today is a glorious day,” began Uriana. “One of our lost lambs has been re-discovered. According to our records, this ferral world is a colony world named Fedora. During the golden age, it was lost to us by a warp storm. After several millenniums that storm has finally receded and it’s our duty to welcome this long lost imperial world back into the fold.”

The main holofield displayed a 3D image of Fedora. From above, it’s surface was half orange and green. The western hemisphere contain a concentration of dark brown while the east was still primarily green.

Rosetta turned to the missionary. “Uriana, why is the planet…” she begun to say, but saw Uriana’s face darkened with a danger glint in her eyes. Rosetta stopped and started over. “I mean Mistress,” she stammered, “Mistress, why is Fedora’s surface divided into two colors?"

Uriana’s mood brightened and the scowl on her face lifted several degrees warmer. “That is what we are going to find out after we make planet fall,” she replied. I will lead a small force to investigate the western hemisphere while you will land in the eastern hemisphere.

"Mistress, would it not be wise to send Dominion scouts in our place?"

"I'd prefer to unravel that mystery in person," replied Uriana. "Mobilize your forces Sister. Oh, and please bring that new toy of ours."

Greetings fellow dakkanauts! I competed in Bay Area Open 2014's Warhammer 40k Championship last week in downtown San Jose.

http://www.frontlinegaming.org/community/bay-area-open-2014/bao-tournament-format/

I would like to give a big shout out to the folks at Frontline Gaming who organized and ran this tournament! Excellent choice of location! It's great to play in an air conditioned conference room rather than last year's large barn. Parking was easy to find and there were plenty of food options nearby.

I haven't touched my Sisters of Battle army in a couple years since end of 5th edition in 2011. Back then, I was dissatisfied after playing a couple disastrous games using the infamous White Dwarf codex Sisters of Battle. I was even more convinced after 6th edition came out with rules that nerfed mechanized armies. I promised to myself never play Sisters until a new codex comes out and edition rules, which favored vehicles. Flash forward to the present and here we have an e-book codex Adepta Sororitas, with mild improvement over that god awful white dwarf codex, 7th edition rules, which have made MSU mech armies viable again.

Despite being on hiatus for over a year (last game played: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/540220.page ) and fond memories of the previous BAO has brought me out of retirement. Two weeks prior to BAO, I played a couple warm up matches against Jy2 to become familiar with this new edition and the new codex Adepta Sororitas.

Army List

I brought a mechanized MSU list featuring 10 AV13 vehicles, 17 melta weapons, 7 templates, and 2 pie plates. Most of my list is geared towards close range shooting, but there's a few long range elements as well including the Exorcists and rapid-fire battle cannon. At the heart of my list lies Repressor transports. They are transports exclusive to Adepta Sororitas with front AV13, 2 fire points, dozer blades, and armed with storm-bolter and heavy flamer. Repressor rules can be found on Forge World's website:

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/r/RepressorFAQversion1P.pdf

Special thanks goes out to fellow dakkanaut, pretre for showing me a good Repressor conversion.

Also, special thanks goes out to Jy2 for letting me borrow his beautiful Imperial Knight, Catastrophic Blast template, and display board.

It's a conversion using the immolator kit. You add a heavy flamer to the pintle mount of the Storm Bolter and add a beefy Dozer Blade (instead of the weedy SOB one). Mine also have a penitent psyker on the front (different than SabrX's) to represent the higher front armor.

Spoiler:

Switching my dozers to Leman Russ dozers since they're cooler looking right now.

Wow. I've not seen this type of Mech-Sisters in a few years. Definitely brought back some memories of how fierce that army used to be. Looking forward to your report.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Game 1: Sisters and Knight vs. Chaos Daemons

Introduction (skip if you are only interested in the battle report)
Spoiler:

Upon arrival on the Fedora's surface, everything appeared normal. The planet's geography was undeveloped and rich with greenery. Sprawling hills and tall mountain peaks stood in the distance. The sky hover above with an orange tint and gray clouds sailed in the atmosphere.

Despite the norm, Rosetta felt an eerie presence hanging in the air. She wasn't the only one. Other sisters disembarking from drop ships sense the unease and gripped their weapons. The only one oblivious to the ominous feeling was Uriana Jacobus, who orated hymns repeated inspiring verses to the troops.

For a moment, the Sister felt a small tingle of admiration for the strong willed missionary. The missionary's presence lifted everyone spirits and soon the expeditionary forces moved into formation.

A wide column of tanks stood poise, awaiting command. A tall and massive Imperial Knight towered over the vehicles with its long battle cannon surveying the distance, ready to blast anything it perceived as a threat.

"Sisters, move out!" Ordered Uriana Jacobus.

Suddenly, all hell broke loose.

Primary Mission: Modified Emperor's Will: 4 Mission Points if achieved, 0 pts if lost or tied.
Secondary Mission: Modified Maelstrom: 3 Mission Points is achieved, 0 pts if lost or tied.
Bonus Points: 1 Mission Point each: First Blood, Linebreaker, Slay the Warlord.
Deployment: Dawn of War

Oh wow, what a way to start the tournament! My first opponent happens to be Lyzz Foster, 40k champion from last Bay Area Open 40k tournament.

This year, she brought a psyker heavy army with whopping 14 Power Dice to start off with. She also included other units ideal against certain popular units or to protect her psykers.

Chaos Daemons

Kairo Fateweaver
Lord of Change, 1 Lesser Reward, 2 Greater Rewards, Pysker Mastery Level 3
Daemon Prince, Daemon of Tzeentch, daemonic flight, Warp-forged armour, 1 Greater Rewards, 1 Exalted Reward, Psyker Mastery Level 3
11 Pink Horrors
11 Pink Horrors
20 Daemonettes
7 Screamers
7 Screamers
10 Flesh Hounds of Khorne

Lyzz generates psychic powers and Daemonic Rewards.

Fateweaver: Inferno, Flame Breath, Hallucinate, Smite, Precognition, all powers from Change discipline.
Lord of Change: Forwarning, Prescience, Dark Flame, Precognition, Perfect Timing, Staff of Change, Dark Blessing, Hellfire Gaze
Daemon Prince: Invisibility, Iron Arm, Warpspeed, Grimoire
Pink Horrors: Possession, Sacrifice
Pink Horrors: Summoning, Dark Flame

Pre-game Thoughts:
Spoiler:

Lyzz has a very psyker heavy list. She got a good number of assault oriented powers and more importantly she got invisibility. However, there isn't much I can do against the Flying Monstrous Creatures. My army sourly lacks anti-air units. The biggest threats are the screamers and hounds. Both have two wounds each and a lot of mobility.

My plan is to take out the screamers and hounds first, ignore the Flying Monstrous Creatures, and play towards the objectives.

Deployment

Spoiler:
We take turns placing objectives. I placed my Emperor’s Will objective in the bottom left hand corner. Lyzz placed hers in the middle. Secondary objectives 1 and 2 were spread out in no man’s land between the deployment zones.

Lyzz wins roll off but opts me to go first.

I deploy my forces across my deployment edge Exorcists distributed mid and both flanks with the Knight and Battle Sisters focused in the center. I kept Jacob and 3 Dominion squads outflanking from reserves.

Lyzz deploys all of her forces with a unit of Pink Horrors on both far end flanks. Daemonics stayed to the right and the rest concentrated in the center.

Lyzz decides not to seize the initiative. Her hounds scout moves forward.

Turn 1: Sisters and Knight
Spoiler:
Sisters and Knight's Maelstrom Objective:
  • Have a scoring unit at least partially within enemy deployment zone.

  • Destroy an Enemy Unit.

  • Daemons' Maelstrom Objective:
  • Hold Objective 1

  • Destroy an Enemy Unit

  • Knight and Battle Sisters moves forward. Exorcists shuffles, getting a better firing angle.

During the shooting phase, I pick off a one hound, a couple Screamers on the right, and inflicted 3 wounds on the Daemon Prince.

    Turn 1: Chaos Daemons

    Spoiler:

All three Flying Monstrous Creatures goes into swoop mode. Everyone moves forward. Daemon Prince uses Grimoire to boost the hounds invulnerable save to 3++.

During the psychic phase, Lyzz generates and additional 6 Power Dice. All of her psykers are still alive, so she gets 14 more. Lord of Change cast forewarning on the Screamer squad, which already received wounds and Prescience on the one that didn't.

Daemon Prince cast Invisibility on the same unit of Screamers but in doing so, perils. He dies, giving me first blood!

Both units of Screamers then proceeds to fail their assault against my vehicles and Imperial Knight.

    Maelstrom Points
    Sisters and Knight: 1
    Daemons: 0

    Turn 2: Sisters and Knight
    Spoiler:
    Sisters and Knight's Maelstrom Objective:
  • Have a scoring unit at least partially within enemy deployment zone.

  • Hold objective 1

  • Daemons' Maelstrom Objective:
  • Have a scoring unit at least partially within enemy deployment zone.

  • Destroy an Enemy Unit

  • Two units of Dominons come in from reserves on the right board edge. Jacob and a Dominion unit fail to come in. Everyone else moves to intercept Daemon ground units.

Shooting from the Knight divide his shooting between the hounds and the Screamers on the right. Exorcist and Battle Sisters help diminishing it to a single Screamer.

Dominions incinerate 6 Pink Horrors and takes out a single Daemonette.

Knight assaults Hounds, but only manages to take one dog.

    Turn 2: Chaos Daemons

    Spoiler:

Screamers moves closer, getting read for a second charge. Daemonettes greets their new guests.

Lord of Change vector strikes and blows up a Repressor.

During the psychic phase, Lyzz generate four additional Power Dice. Aside from that, it was very lackluster. Bad luck resulted in most of her tests not going off or not doing anything. Lord of Change attempted to use a Str8 Lance shot at my Exorcist, but fails to hit. Lord of Change casted Forwarning on the hounds, giving them a 4++.

In assault. Daemonettes multi-charge the two Dominion vehicles. They infilct two penetration results, but I saved both thanks to two lucky 6's from Shield of Faith. The other Repressor wasn't so lucky and became wrecked.

Over in the middle. Screamers manage to wreck one Battle Sister Repressor and knick 2 hull points off the other.

5 hounds are slain by the Knight.

    Maelstrom Points
    Sisters and Knight: 3
    Daemons: 2

    Turn 3: Sisters and Knight
    Spoiler:
    Sisters and Knight's Maelstrom Objective:
  • Hold Objective 2

  • Destroy an Enemy Unit

  • Daemons' Maelstrom Objective:
  • Hold Objective 1

  • Destroy an Enemy Unit

  • Jacob's Dominion still doesn't come in.

Remaining Repressors guns toward Daemon's Emperor's Will objective.

    Battle Sisters contest first objective.

In the shooting phase, Battle Sisters Repressors moves flat out.

Dominion Repressor also moves flat out toward the Daemon's Emperor's Will objective. Dominions guns down 3 Daemonettes.

    Turn 3: Chaos Daemons

    Spoiler:

Fateweaver contests my Emperor's will objective. Lord of change moves to contest 2nd objective.

Screamers and Pink Horrors, and Daemonettes chases after the Repressors.

Lyzz rolled a 12 on the warp storm and spawned a brand new unit of Daemonettes. She deep strike and later ran them to contest her Emperor's Will objective.

During the shooting phase, Pink Horrors uses Flickering Fire to glance the last hull point off the Repressor. Battle Sisters disembarks within Emperor's Will objective.

Screamers attempts to assault, but fails their charge distance. Daemonettes wrecks the last Dominion Repressor and lone Flesh Hound somehow survives assault against my Imperial Knight.

    Maelstrom Points
    Sisters and Knight: 3
    Daemons: 3

By now, we had ran out of time. Despite each game being allocated 2 hours and 45 minutes, this game took a long time setting up and each psychic phase lasted quite a while. Unfortunately, Jacob didn't come in by the end of turn 3, so Lyzz scored Slay the Warlord.

We both tied in secondary and Primary was contested. We both had line breaker and I got Fire Blood. In the end the first match of the day ended in a draw.

    Post-game Thoughts:
    Spoiler:

Wow, first game of the day ending in a draw! I can't believe I gave up Slay the Warlord from leaving my HQ in reserves. Then again, I got first blood because the Daemon Prince periled.

In hindsight, I made a lot of mistakes. Leaving Jacob in serves was one of them. Second, there wasn't a need to outflank my Dominion squads. Lyzz placed her Emperor's Will objective in the center, so it would take a couple turns for any units coming in from the side board edge to reach it. It would have been better to starts off with all my units deployed, scout move all my dominions, disembark, and assassinate Fateweaver or the Daemon Prince before they go into swoop mode. Third mistake was not leaving an Objective Secured unit to hold my Emperor's Will objective, which Fate Weaver contested towards the end. The last mistake was neglecting objective 2 on turn 3. My Battle Sisters were in a prime position to take it and I could have won secondary.

All in all, it was a well fought match. Lyzz had bad luck with her psychic dice rolls and her units failed their charge distance at the bottom of turn 1. Had Lyzz gone first, she may have won with her Daemon Prince still in tact.

Epilogue (skip if you are only interested in the battle report)
    Spoiler:

The clatter of bolters and bestial roars fills the air. Daemons appear out of thin air all around the Sisters.

Sister Rosetta and her squad held out on a small hill behind the wreckage of their transport. Her fellow Sisters kept a steady stream of fire, holding off a mob of pink monstrosities hurling warp fire at their direction.

"Norris, come in!" She screamed in her vox-caster.

"Reporting in," replied Eternal's ship captain.

"Our forces are under attack, we need air support!"

"I'm afraid our ship's hangers isn't equipped with fighters. We needed extra space to accommodate the Imperial Knight.

Rosetta cursed. Two bird like monsters swoop in the air casting daemonic sorcery all over the battlefield. If they weren't dealt soon, her forces will lose out in war of attrition.

Just as she was about to send orders to retreat towards the drop ships, a loud earsplitting shriek ripped into the air.

Something fast and blue hurled into the air, smashing straight into one of the flying bird daemons. The mid-air collision sent both hurling into the ground a good distance away.

Relief overcame her and for a moment she thought reinforcements had arrived.

"Sister, pull back," ordered Uriana over the vox-caster. "A greater threat lies in the west. We have stumbled into a full planetary war between Tyranids and Daemons."

Do you know what the BAO rulings on psychic power generation was? I'm guessing the allowed chaos psychic focus and psychic focus to stack otherwise not sure how there are so many powers

Fatey, can only generate one power from pyro/div/bio/telepathy (and all of change), so should only have one pyro power?
LoC, has 4 div powers & a malefic one, I'm guessing maybe you mean Flickering fire (FF) instead of dark flame, which would be explained by the stacking
Horrors are only ML1 (despite generating 2 warp charges) if the psychic focuses stacked you could have FF, summoning + malefic power, but they shouldn't be able to generate 2 malefic powers.

Apologies if I'm being a stickler.

Looked like a rough match, though I thought all the Str8 shooting would have served you well against the screamers/hounds.

Seeing Lyzz's army, I wouldn't have left Jacobus in reserves. Here you have MSU vs Psychic-spam. Both are time-intensive armies to play. I'm actually not all that surprised it only went to Turn 3. But to be fair, it takes experience to judge these types of things. Anyways, that was close. You almost had it!

Yup! She was rocking the Pelt throughout the entire tournament.

I'm not entirely sure. I just wrote down what I heard. There's too many psykers to keep track of.

    @Jy2:

Jacob has done well in coming in from reserves in my practice game. Unfortunately, it took an entire hour before we started turn 1. I didn't expect Jacob to fail coming in on turn 2 and 3. Lady luck is fickle like that.

The fact that you managed to draw against the previous BAO winner, IMO, is a victory in and of itself. As others have already pointed out, it's a pity about the time limit, but at least your Sisters were doing well in this game.

Definitely looking forward to more of this report. I'm as happy as you are about the return of Mechanized Sisters to the competitive fold, and I'm really curious to see how well the combination of Repressors and the Knight work.

(Incidentally, correct me if I'm wrong, but I had heard that the Repressor rules printed in the most recent IA book were different than those available for free from Forge World. Is that true, and if so, which version is considered to be the "official" Repressor?)

Haha did you guys really end up playing against each other? If so that is terrible of the ToF Gods.

Yeah, I'm happy mechanized armies are viable again. I am indeed free download version of the Repressor rules on Forge World's website. It's easily accessible and takes little effort to prove. Also, fewer stuff to haul around.

Yup. First time in a tournament where we squared off against each other. I'll leave it to Jy2 to post the battle report for Game #2. His pictures are much better than mine and he has more followers.

Nice rep! And well done as others have said.

Wow. I've not seen this type of Mech-Sisters in a few years. Definitely brought back some memories of how fierce that army used to be. Looking forward to your report.

Really? I play mech sisters all the time...

I meant locally; we had a player who was really good with a Sisters army and we had several very tough games.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Congrats so far for taking Sisters and doing well! Maybe it will silence SOME of the internet whiners about armies being unplayable?
