Subject: 1850 Tournament Practice, Tyrant Spam vs Serpent Spam
Hello all, Im attending my first small GT in October (Mechanicon) and am practicing with my bugs. Its double CAD, FW allowed. There are two lists I fear due to the limitations of the bugs, Serpent Spam and Imperial Knight lists. My helped me practice today, running a pretty common
Serpent spam list. We didnt video it because there are a lot of proxies going on and I hate that, as Im sure you do as well.
Her army. Screamers and Herald are Jetbikes and Farseer, respectively. Tau tank is additional Wave Serpent as is Fire Prism. Pathfinders are Warp Spiders.
My army. Zoanthrope is a stand in for Malanthrope until he arrives this week.
My powers. Fourth Tyrant has Psychic Scream as well but my daughter has hidden that card from me somewhere in the house. Left Tyrant is Warlord.
We're playing 5 objectives placed evenly across the board (left right center +deployment zones). She rolled Nightfighting warlord trait and I rolled MoA.
Turn 1
Spoiler:
I fail to seize.
Her left side deployment, other Knight and Serpent on right side. She removes her Jetbikes before starting though, and keeps them in reserves.
My deployment. Infiltrated my two fexes with the thrope. My non DS Rippers hold the objective inside the building in my deployment.
She kills the Malanthrope with combined fire, Serpent shields rolled very well and he couldnt make enough 3+ invuls. First blood.
I successfully cast Onslaught on both Carnifexes. I also get Catalyst off on my Warlord and closest Tyrant. It takes a massive amount of fire to bring down the Wave Serpent (4 pairs of devourers + electroshock)
Turn 2
Spoiler:
Only one squad of Jetbikes come on. I easily deny a cast for Invisibility.
Her units castle, a mistake in my opinion but whatever. Lots of shooting wounds a Fex on the left and the Knight insta-kills it with a 6. : / My tyrants make a ton of saves and Fnp the rest.
My Rippers come in. My Mawloc mishaps and goes in to reserves.
My Tyrants move to kill the two Wave Serpents using overlapping ESG.
Both die, and both DA squads are pinned.
Turn 3
Spoiler:
Her Jet bikes come in, and moves to kill off the rippers, but they make their cover saves for the most part. She has shrouding on them.
Her Warp Spiders DS as well on top of my deployments ruins/objectives.
On my turn, another brood of rippers is deep striked onto the left side objective. My Mawloc misses the Farseer on the ground, scattering away. Two Flyrants go off the board, the other two head towards the Farseer/DA squad.
My rippers move up to attempt to tarpit the Warp Spiders above them, and the Carnifex turns around. All my rippers have been making their IB tests btw. The Warp Spiders make all 8 saves from the Carnifex. : /
My tyrant kill off three jet bikes but they hold their moral. My other tyrant fails to kill any DA. My rippers move down to assault them, and remain in a slap fight.
My other rippers lose two bases to overwatch and are killed in combat. WS consolidate down a level.
Turn 4
Spoiler:
Her jetbikes and last Wave Serpent move to hold the right side objective.
Her knight moves to punch the Mawloc in the face as the other advances on the Carnifex and objective. Her Jetbikes flat out towards the left side objective as her no longer
pinned DA move south as well.
Mawloc receives a wound from shooting and more from CC, but puts a wound on the Knight. It attempts to Hit and Run but fails its initiative check.
My Tyrant glides on to the table, and I think here I made a rules mistake as I think I have to stay swooping if I left swooping. Either way I could have angled to get my shooting the same, but I wanted to charge turn 5. Rippers come in as well.
My top Tyrants advance, with my warlord making sure he is within 6 inches of both the DA and Knight for Psychic shriek. The other glides down next to the DA so he can join combat next round. I put one wound on the Knight with PS and 2 of the DA die as well. Catalyst
is denied on the Mawloc.
My other tyrant flies on to deal with the left side objective. He successfully casts and pins the DA squad to keep them away from the objective. He shoots and kills one Jetbike.
Mawloc loses combat and the Knight takes the objective.
Turn 5
Spoiler:
Her remaining Warp spiders unload and I fail all of my saves, losing a Tyrant in the process. : /
Her two Knights take shots at my grounded Flyrant, but do not wound.
My turn has my left Tyrant dealing a tremendous amount of wounds to the Farseer's jetbike squad, killing them off and securing my objective.
My Warlord flies danger close to the Jetbikes on the right and shoots them off, allowing no one to claim it.
My rippers fail their IB and get Rage, assaulting the Warp Spiders. My Tyrant on her deployment objective kills off the Dire Avengers, securing the northern objective as well.
With that, the game is ended.
Tyranids have three objectives and slay the warlord/Linebreaker.
Eldar have 1 objective and First blood/Slay the Warlord/Linebreaker
A minor victory to the Tyranids, but a victory Ill take against a hard matchup.

I like your use of pictures to keep the spells straight. Might have to start doing that.

Here's a suggestion to the Eldar player. I like the dual Farseer combo. However, ALWAYS give one of your farseers the Mantle of the Laughing God. To me, it is a must-take for your 1st farseer just as the Malanthrope is a must-take in a Tyranid army (unless you are running the seer council).
Then give the other Farseer the Spirit Stone of Anath'lan. I use the Mantleseer as my Warlord and give him Telepathy powers in the hopes of Shrouding (most important power for mechdar) as well as Invisibility (secondary). The Stoneseer becomes my summoning guy. His job is to just summon daemons and with the Stone, he is casting those 3-WC powers as 2-WC only.
For some extra laughs, the Stoneseer joins the Mantleseer so that both gets Stealth and Shrouded. Then make sure to keep your Mantleseer in the front (towards the enemy) because he gets to re-roll his cover saves as well.

Yea man, I put them in a plastic cover sheet and it makes things so much easier, it saves a lot of time. I wish ALL daemon players HAD to do this in tournaments for that reason.

That sounds pretty bananas...Sam is back in college so with a two year old + me at work all the time she has only gotten in a few games in 7th, so shes rusty and needs some ideas like that for getting back into the game. I didnt think of the Stone idea, that sounds rough.
Great game. Eldar, especially mechdar, is a tough matchup for our bugs. Not impossible, but definitely not easy.
Just a couple of minor rules issues.
She kills the Malanthrope with combined fire, Serpent shields rolled very well and he couldnt make enough 3+ invuls. First blood.
The malanthrope doesn't have a 3+ Invuln. She's only got 3+ armour, but I am assuming it didn't matter because you didn't kill her with AP 2/3 guns anyways.
My Rippers come in.
BTW, deepstriking units always land on the bottom level of ruins.
Not a big deal in your battle, but thought I'd just point them out.
BTW, I am playing against triple Imperial Knights Adamantine Lance formation tomorrow. I am still debating on whether I should bring my own IK list or maybe run dual-CAD Tyranids. Hmmmm.....

I agree. When our Crones were still still S8 multiple hit vectors I was eating mechdar alive running three of them, now its a tough nut thats all too common.

You're right, we played him correct but I was seeing a Zoanthrope in the pics and my brain connected the wrong dots

I had no idea, thats pretty important! I've never had anyone point that out to me.

Id love to see the dual-CAD list personally for obvious reasons, even if its tailored.
Hey thanks. They are just a fade of evil suns scarlet, troll something orange, fire dragon orange, then flash gitz yellow highlights followed by a thin cassandora (sp?) shade, then 'ardcoat. Im terrible at remembering paint names but they are all citadel paints.
Glad to see the bugs come out on top against serpent spam - not something that happens every day. Definitely looking forward to you beng able to pull this list off with the Tyranid Knight - ought to be much easier to deal with other knights!
