I just - well - "finished" my newest model. Applied the oil washes and leaving him to dry for a day or two now.. Although he's not technically finished I'll post it in here
While I think it's one of the better models I did so far (especially compared to my previous dread I did - here), I still can't help that something is... missing. I seriously can't put my finger on it, and beside a bit of a shabby magnetising (right arm won't fit properly) and that fething decal that decided to wander around while the water evaporated which I need to scrape off and redo, I, this once, didn't feth anything up. feelsgoodman.jpg.

I also attached a shot I didn't think I would upload, but it went a bit better with the lighting (still trying to get the light to work a bit better, gonna need a 2nd lamp). Plus I really like the look of the ML's. Giving Frak and Krak Missiles a different colour was one of my better ideas.

So - before I give him the final blessing with a satin varnish - what do you think?

Highlights?

Even though they're Dark Angels there should be a few on there, try some edge highlights before the varnish.

Actually there are highlights I guess the bad lightning doesn't lend itself to the more subtle ones I did by airbrush.
But yes, I think that especially the metallcs and blacks could do with more additional highlighting, they DO look especially bland in the pictures...
Gotta get up and make some brighter pics once the cats decide to let me go from the couch

Well, getting pictures proved to be rather difficult. I did do some more highlights on the metalics and blacks, but didn't help too much. But I think I could identify my issue...
Despite great successes with my Predator ( here) I couldn't reproduce my color scheme reliably. Went too dark, that's what it all looks flat now. Nothing I can fix at this stage.. Doing edge highlights over the brighter parts would look just silly. Darn.
So easily from "I like this!" to "damn, model ruined."

Definitely don't think the model is ruined m8 far from it. Use some inks to create some darker contrast and then edge highlight with some scorpion green. Although better pics would help. Really like the predator btw

Well yeah, ruined is a bit dramatic
I had hoped to reproduce my success with the Pred, but I didn't remember the paint ratios I used and went too dark... A Dread is an entirely different beast to highlight than a Pred, not enough angles and way smaller... But ah well.
The first three pictures are just way too dark to see the highlights. In the side view you can e.g. see the highlight on the top of the weapon arm - it's brighter on the top of the model. That actually is some toned down Scorpion green (or it's new equivalent, Moot Green). I found that using pure Moot Green is way to bright (as my first Dread shows).
That's where edge highlighting won't work - there are highlights already.

I tried some brighter pics, but the gloss varnish doesn't lend itself very well to harsher lighting... Grants the Dread the Blind USR
Lesson learned, write down your ratios and don't UNDERDO highlights.
