REVISED: 1/666015.M3

++========++ WELCOME TO THE GREY BOOK OF RASHBOLD ++========++

This "logbook" is my Adeptus Mechanicus bucket list.

My personal goal is to complete:
an entire Skitarii Macroclade (not just a Maniple or War Cohort)
and an entire Cult Mechanicus Congregation of the Adeptus Mechanicus.

I will build it unit by unit, detachment by detachment, formation by formation.

All designated units will be constructed to the specified STC designs provided
by the Adeptus Mechanicus Codex: Skitarii and the Adeptus Mechanicus Codex: Mechanicus
in accordance with the Omnissiah's Grand Design.

I will build no other army until my goal has been accomplished.

This is the sum of my plans. As I fight the weakness of the flesh and
discover new data to assist me in my goal, there is always the probability
of making 'adjustments' along the way.

To paraphrase the words of German military strategist Helmuth von Moltke:
"No model plan survives contact with the enemy"

(Links will be added to each listing when completed)

One day in... and considering these are the first models I have built in a few years, I am proud of my first attempt.

No blade or glue hazards so far. Thank the Great Maker.

I was not aware exactly how much the model-builds are limited. Specific arms, bodies, weapons for specific models?! Yikes.
My plans for assembly line building just had a wrench thrown into them. The Omnissiah tests us, he does...

The Skitarii kit doesn't allow for the Alpha to carry a radium carbine. Easily converted.

The special weapon models are best built they are instructed, otherwise I will be converting half the models in the box to hold the standard radium carbines I had planned to.

I have to tighten up my build time on each of the boxes.

Ciao,
R.

Two days in... and only one squad built. Ugh.

At least my pace is consistent so far. Some minor problems with clipping. A few of the dangling cables snapped off and I had to glue each of them back on. I found gluing both arm and rifle parts together first has been more successful than trying to glue them both simultaneously to the torso.

It's been a learning experience so far.

Looking good so far, keep it up! Wouldn't it be easier to paint the arms and guns before you glue them down? These are some quite complex models, and the details arehard to reach sometimes

It would be easier to paint almost all of the bitz before assembly.

There is a good amount of detail on the bitz, which unfortunately gets blocked and covered once everything is attached.

That is why I decided to build and paint my first few maniples as is. Build them, paint what can be seen, and be able to play with them. My building and painting skills are not much to speak of, so I figured it's going to be a learning experience overall.

After a hundred models, or my first War Cohort, I'll play around with some conversions and take time to paint more of the details.

Pulled an all-nighter and sprained a cog, but here is my second Vanguard squad assembled:

Rushing the assembly had its downside; a lot of extra filing and clipping once the models were assembled.
A few messy spots from gluing, also filed and cleaned as much as possible.

Overall, it was psychologically worth it to see them built, but if I was going for more than a table top quality I would be a bit disappointed.

Looking good. Quite honestly if I may suggest something, having mass-painted these lately- leave the waist unglued until after painting. You'll be able to reach many areas you can't once assembled. Plus they happily sit properly when dry placed.

@Buttery Commissar: I certainly will try that for my next batch. Thanks!

...and now, my third Vanguard squad takes center board.

Not too rushed this time, so less to trimming. Mixed up and forgot a few bitz during assemble, but was able to make corrections.

The frontal cloak piece still bothers me. Considering whether to leave it off to show some of the body detail better.

However, some places the detail is lacking on the legs - so sculpting is an option (never did THAT before, so maybe not).

Maybe for a future build?

Well, I guess that's it for now... wait, what's that sound? Moving across the table... could it be?

(insert Lone Skitarii Ranger theme here)

YES! It is! It's my Ironstrider Ballistarii!

Had some extra time, and it took surprisingly less than a squad's worth to assemble.

It did have some trying moments though.

Why, oh Omnissiah, why were some bitz really necessary?

Take the 'red' cable above. The other two were on a bit that attached to the inner thigh of the Ballistarii's leg.

Why was the center cable separate? Why? Why?

...and the 'blue' joint plates? Why not be a part of the leg bit? Nottomention they're 'notched' inside to fit only

a certain way. Why, do you torment me Omnissiah? I know, I know... it's all a part of the Great Design. Dang, He's right.

He's ALWAYS right.

So this meets the assembly quota for September.

The current tally is:

All currently vowed models built. Now to clean them up and check for any missed spots.

Hey, 31 models built in a month. That is a record for me.

Thanks for listening to my ramblings. I'll be taking a short break, getting some primer etc, then to the final week's work!

[edit: found a can of black primer - now I can rest and expel all of the glue and paint fumes.]

Skitarius-unit selected for colour test::

Primer - Chaos Black
Base - Steel Legion Drab
Layer - Martian Ironearth
Metallics - Sycarax Bronze & Balthasar Gold

I want my Adeptus Mechanicus to stand out from the Martian Red, yet not be too extreme to be unrecognizable. The other forge colours of Metalica, Stygies XII, etc just didn't inspire me. I also wanted to keep a desert look, i.e. faded colours, but then I didn't want them being mistaken for Tau.

Then I thought, "Martian Ironearth". Undeniably Martian. Not too red, not too tan, not too orange. It wins!

The big unknown was if the Martian Ironearth could be layered thinly enough to avoid the 'cracking' effect. Here it is on the model in two thin layers. I may go for a third.

Before assembly-lining my 30+ models, what do you think? It's not complete, I know, but just your general impression.

Thanks,
R.

Simply put, the leg bits are moulded separately so you can set either leg as a lef or a right. Then adding details. I assume the same is valid for the tiny cable as well.

I'm doing some mechanicus as well, started with the riders first. But that was what i deducted from the papers inside the box

That said, back to painting. Maybe a better light would help? Your images don't really show a lot (or are out of focus). It's a shame, models look good so it would be worth to see better your work.

Keep 'em coming
