Painting Within the Lines
|
Hey folks,
I´m starting my first thread and would like to get some feedback.
In this thread I want to show you my latest scratch built warboss and the progress on it.
This is how I started:
I cut out a foamcore out of the foam I usually use to modify my bases and added some Milliput to it.
After the Milliput hardened, I adde some armourplates to the shoulders and the back.
I used some chains to give him some style.
After the torso was kind of finished, I wanted to go on with the legs.
I allready learned how to scratch build legs on my first ever scratch built Warboss.
So this wasn´t such a challenge, but this time I wanted them to be more than just plastic rods with some armour plates,
so I started modelling some fancy pants around the rod.
I must admit that my modelling skills are not very skilled...
After the legs were finished, I wanted to go on with the arms.
It turned ot that they are not as easy as I thought.
I wanted to give him total mechanical looks due to my modelling skills...
I first started with the left arm on which I wanted a "usual" power claw.
I started with a foamcore - again. It wasn´t perfect, but it worked after a bit of trial and error.
The claw itself came out even better than I thought.
On his "gunarm" I wanted something different to a boring twin linked shoota or some kind of flamethrower,
so I googled "gatling gun" and found a good one.
With this on my screen, I thought about how I could get this done.
I took my rods and tubes and profiles and started starring at them until they morphed into a nice gatling gun...
After the arms were done, the beast was nearly ready to paint.
The Last things I added were some supporting pistons under each arm - for looks and stability and the ammunition belt (?).
- the arms were superglued to the foam, so the pistons were necessary.
I started painting.
The head is a magnetized Maxmini - Head
They are really good looking but a bit oversized to use em on usual Boyz, Nobz or even Bosses.
So, what do you think? I´m pretty happy with the result but some feedback is recommanded.
(Sorry for my English, I´m a bit out of practice!)
To be continued...

Superb stuff! My only concern would be the large flat area on the stomach, but that could easily be broken up at the painting stage by some tattoos/glyphs/scars ect.
You also might want to look into using Green Stuff ('kneadatite' from cheaper non-GW sellers) for sculpting the outer layers and finer details, I find it's better than milliput for that kind of stuff whereas milliput is superior for bulking out the sculpt.
Should be brilliant when he's done, though!

Yes, you´r right,
I already went on on this and put a bad moon on his belly, it really breaks up this area.
I used the Milliput ´cause I accidentially ordered 3 packeges of it and now want to get rid of it.
As far as I can go, I will use it for larger areas, like this dude and use Green Stuff after that.
I must admit that my GS-work isn´t the best as well...
Pics will follow soon.
Thanks for your comment.

I like it alot.
The claw especially looks pretty close to the original.
Can't wait to see more pictures, maybe even a few painted shots.

Thank you all for your kind words and advice.
I´m going to try to follow that.
Here are the latest pics I made.
In my opinion, I need to break up the total metall-look of the arms.
Any ideas? I´m thinking of some warningsigns - yellow / black stripes but am open for any other thoughts.
Some highlights might be good as well, I guess.

Great work as always! I really enjoy your ability to scratchbuild all of the mechanical bits. I may have to steal the ammo chain idea!

Ammo feed construction stolen!
Good job, some great plastic work.
Criticism was, not sure on leg to body proportions for warboss, something seems off in that respect.
bullet holes and battle damage may like on the storm shield, and other armour plates.
I think he would suit a gut plate similar to fantasy ogres.

To Zognob:
Thank you,sir.
I must agree, the legs seem to be a little bit to "human" for an ork, but I´m still trying to figure out, how to come up with the right proportions - my next one seems to have the same "long-legs-problem".
I´m not so good at battledamage, but you´re right with that. Maybe I´ll fix that...
I really wanted a "fat" ork, so this is the reason, I kept his belly "open".

Yes, sir.
I bought a few (5) Maxmini heads, which are way to big for "usual" orks, even for bosses, so I had to make at least 3 big warbosses.
2 are allready done and the third one is in the making.
But honestly, the third one has come up a little bit too big, so I decided to make him count as a deff dread instead of a usual boss... He´s nearly done.
Pics will follow.

I started with a foamcore - as usual.
Then I used Milliput for the muscles and let it harden.
After that I applied some Green Stuff and started with the legs.

I gave him a mulit-granade-launcher with a flamer.
Instead of a Power klaw, I wanted to give him an open hand.
