I've reached that stage in the hobby (again) where I've come to the realisation that I buy far more than I assemble, base, paint or play games with. This probably happened due to playing with unpainted models and trying to run a number of narrative campaigns in quick succession.

Therefore I've started this blog to keep track of exactly what I'm getting done, gain and share inspiration / ideas and set myself some goals/ hobby challenges.

Currently I've got 4 main armies in progress
Space Wolves
CSM (Mainly Alpha Legion)/Daemons
Eldar (with the odd DE/Harle unit)
Orks

I've got a small but largely complete Imperial Guard army that I won't cover much but sometimes get units added which fit into my traitor Guard theme for my Alpha Legion force.

As the to-do list is slightly overwhelming I took the units I thought would take the least amount of time to complete and organised them into groups by type (core troops, elites, bikes, walkers and vehicles) to stop wasting time trying to figure out what to paint each session. I've also got a few terrain projects in the go to add some variety, including a city full of MDF ruins and pipes/ towers for a spaceship themed board for an upcoming campaign.

Anyways here are a few pics of my to-do pile that I will be posting updates on, this is just the start and is only 40k (I'm working on finishing my Malifaux crews too)....

Thanks Waaazag, it is just a mock up at the minute whilst I decided what I'm doing with him, probably adding a frost axe in place of the bolter and adjusting the wiring/smoke effect to look better (at other angles it doesn't sit right)

Got some more pictures of the Contemptor which is almost tabletop ready now

Looks like your backlog is like mine! Good to know I'm not the only one who has bought way faster than they paint! Your Contemptor looks pretty cool, I'm sure it'll look even better when it is all finished!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

Thanks ZergSmasher, you haven't even seen my orks or the things to be made yet..... I'm working on some kind of self-bribery to help get through it all, maybe one of the bigger Forgeworld kits (Warhound or Thunderhawk?) once I get it all done? The only way I'll do that is by not buying anything for 6 months so it might actually be affordable!

How does everyone else motivate themselves toget through a huge job? Small incremental goals or big prize at the end?

I don't have anyone local to do a painting challenge with right now but trying to post something regularly will keep me working for now

Thanks It is currently just a lot of diet coke cans and some B&Q piping and vents, lots more to come hopefully, already got lots of ideas from a few other blogs here - I've got an old printer at home now marked for destruction for electronic parts.

The idea is to create a modular board that can represent boarding actions like the ones in the Horus Heresy novels (Crimson Fist, Battle of the Abyss etc) so all areas of the ship can be represented during different parts of a campaign.

Aim to get a fair amount done next week after work so I should have an update by end of next week

Got some colour on my group of Chosen, pretty good match to the Contemptor (which is the reference colour for my Alpha Legion), mix of Vallejo Game Air and FW

Hopefully pictute rotation is right this time

Your models are looking like they're coming along nicely. Unfortunately, it's hurting my neck to try and look at them. Perhaps just take photos in Landscape instead of Portrait from now on and crop as needed?

Oops, thought the last ones worked ok but just checked and they're sideways too, you're right I thought it was my phone being funny but it is just portrait pics that are messed up. Here is my converted wolf priest (not planning on doing anymore work in him) and some WIP Infinity stuff just to make sure....

Got some more work done on the Eldar pile. The wave serpent was my first attempt at masking panels off whilst airbrushing (still fairly new to the airbrush). Happy enough with the masking just not entirely sure about the colour scheme. The idea was to match the Guardians but also add extra interest and to try some a new metallic orange from FW.

The basic scheme is orange for panels (Guardians have GW jokaero orange for base), white for wraithbone and blue for grills. The wave serpent has some metallic orange (FW) panels and some burning orange (Game Air).

Thoughts on the wave serpent colours? I'm planning to brighten up the jokaero orange and highlight/glaze the burning orange Should I get rid of the orange metallic panels? Reduce the amount of bright orange? Or if you like the wave serpent then how should I do the jetbike to match?

Any ideas/ comments/ constructive criticism welcome!

So I still can't decide what to do with the eldar, all I know is I'm not 100% happy with the colour scheme. Think I'll get all my aspect warriors done first then come back to it.

I couldn't be bothered with painting minis today so I've been working on some terrain from TTcombat to go along with the starship themed board I'm working on, along with getting done paint onto the piping I started earlier.

The generator still needs more work but you get the basic idea. Next I'm going to start making tiles for the board so that it is modular and easy to store. Thinking a mix of 1'x1' and 2'x1' tiles made from 4mm plywood should work.

I like the wave serpent and think you should do the bike to match. You could give the Wave Serpent some blue stripes too for a more cohesive feel across the army.

The latest terrain is awesome.

Thanks Dr Cheese, I've got a few bikes so I'll probably do a few designs and post them at some point.

For today I've been working on some more airbrushing (including my leman russ which is the first model I ever airbrushed). I've just been adding camo patterns to the valkyrie and taurus to match using stencils I made from old plastic DVD case covers. They are solid enough to hold an edge and not disintegrate but also flexible enough to bend around different contours.

There's still a lot of overspray to correct but I'm quite pleased with the effect and using the same stencils keeps a cohesive feel across the vehicles. Any guesses as to who these guys will fight for?

Thanks for reading and hope you like them

Interesting camo pattern on those Guard vehicles. Where did you get the inspiration for that style of camo? I've never seen anything like that before, so I am curious.

Good question, I started out wanting a desert theme to match my Alpha Legion that I've based off the setting in the Horus Heresy novel Legion - small elite Alpha Legion force with larger (Traitor) Guard force. So I started with sand and brown then thought I'd add in blue as a spot colour and something to tie them in with the Alpha Legion.

As for the pattern I like jagged camo patterns rather than wavy, you'll find these kind of patterns on some older battleships, the idea is to break up the silhouette of the ship to make it harder to spot (Google "Disruptive camouflage"). I didn't copy any particular pattern, just drew a few shapes with lots of sharp angles and made some stencils.

I try to keep to a few rules to keep it all looking the same, mainly that brown is underneath blue and blue patterns should touch or overlap brown ones and all patterns should continue/ wrap around from one surface to another e.g. wing to fuselage.

Looking back at how it turned out it isn't too dissimilar to some of the WW2 British North African tank camouflage patterns but that wasn't what I originally planned but some people have thought that was what I was going for.
