Hey guys, I've been wondering how many people are modifying their long-time collections when a unit or the entire army gets a facelift?
What got me thinking is how many people are now selling their FW's when the incoming new ones were spoiled. I wonder if I should get 36 unpainted but assembled FWs and the bits from a friend now or wait and get a box of 12 (or maybe 10, who knows what GW will do) new ones at the same price. I've been always "reasonable" about the money I spend on WH40k and damn I really have no idea what to do lol. I for sure do not plan to trash my FW's, I really like the old sculpt even if it's a bit bad in some places, but on the other hand I'm sooo curious about the new set coming.

Given none of my Citadel/GW figures were made after 1990, I guess my answer is 'No'.

As primarily a painter/collector/modeller, If I bought them in the first place I like them so would not sell/give them away,

but I can see why gamers who 'had' to buy a mini even though they didn't like it would jump at the chance to get rid of them if something more to their taste came out

I've done the opisite at times. I have several 1e Malifaux models that I bought after the 2e versions came out just because they looked better in my opinion.

No. I treasure my old minis and love the diversity they bring to my force.

I can't see why people would sell them. If your a painter, why would you sell something you have put all that work in to? If you are a gamer who does not care about painting minis why do you care about the new ones looking a little "better" (which is in itself subjective).

A new day, a new time zone.

Probably not many. The only times I've seen it happen has been when the old models were a particularly bad or unpleasing sculpt. Usually, the new ones just get integrated in.

Nope - I tend to only buy minis I like and its seldom I change my mind.

I'd wait to see what comes out and which you like so you can make an informed choice...........

I love, cherish, and field all sorts of old stuff.

My Eldar tempt me. If it wasn’t for the overhead of listing, shipping, collecting payments, etc, I’d probably try to unload some of my old stuff to replace with the newer kits. That and I’m not a fan of finecast, so am avoiding some of the new stuff in the first place.

But I collected a chunk of it haphazardly back in RT-early 3rd. This leaves me with things like 4 wraithguard, and a warp spider exarch and 3 guys in his squad. If I could easily swap my old metal WG for a new box, I probably would. I recently assembled and painted my old metal wraithlord. What a pain. Also, what a plain, boring model. The new one is so much better looking it’s not funny. Also, not a spindly, top heavy, chunk of lead. I bought 3 boxes of bikes when the last codex dropped 2 years ago. The new bikes that aren’t ~20 year old sculpts are just a tad cooler. I’m not going to trash/sell my old ones though, not that I’d expect any demand for them.

While I’m not going to sell/replace old stuff, old ugly stuff does tend to find it’s way to the back of the shelf and off of the army list. My marine collection includes two squads of 2nd ed “I love my bolter” snap-fits. They don’t see a lot of battle.

New sculpts will also stop me from picking them up. Right now all my terminators are old, small based, metal ones. If I start picking up new plastics, I’d feel compelled to replace/update all the old ones. So it’s not going to happen.

My nids have everything from the original "hunter slayers" right up to plastic termigants.
I keep everything for them as I actually prefer the older stuff.

Unless of course it means moving 60 old metal hormagaunts over the board, then I get a bit nervous as they tend to snap or topple easily.

Absolutely not. Most of my 2nd ed stuff are my favs barring some of the really cool newer kits GW have done.

Old models need the most love.....

Wow, so many dedicated collectors on dakka! Respect to you guys, I will give those old FWs a go and buy the new ones later on after the release. I guess it all comes down to being a player or a collector, someone who hasn't even primed their troops isn't obviously too attached to them. I will take advantage then

I don't even KNOW anymore.

Not usually, but boy did I ever with the new(er) Dark Eldar miniatures. Surprised that I managed to easily get a buyer for the old stuff.

I never sell them, but occasionally give some away. Rarely, though, as sometimes, it comes in handy to have more models or reasonable proxies. For instance, when Gladius came out, had I not kept my old models, I would never have been able to field a full company.

Usually, if I give something away, it's because I really didn't like the paint job

Guess I'm a bit of both - I still have some models from way back when (2nd, when I started), but when a nicer model comes out I'll update it and sometimes sell the old one:
Old metal Whirlwind - cool, but by heck did I hate when it fell backwards all the time, so I got a new one.
Metal Wraithguard - monopose, and again, fally-over, managed to sell them just before the new ones came out for the price of the new box, shiny!

But that's not to say I don't hoard some nostalgia-inducing models, I have both the new Ghazghull model and the old. The old one doesn't see the table ever, but sits on my shelf looking badly-painted and full of memories!

Quite the opposite. I prefer older models. They're usually cheaper, and they give people a false impression of how long you've been playing your army.

No, but not out of any particular brand or nostalgia loyalty - I make each figure I own into what I want it to be. I don't buy things because they're convenient or needed for a gap in my army. I mod, choose or paint them into what I imagine that piece would work best as.
Heck I ended up with some ogryns recently and because they're just creepy to me, gave them away.

Why the hell would you?

It's hard enough to justify the cost of buying a completely new unit from GW let alone buying a unit that you already have perfectly good and useful models.

As long as they are all the same, it comes down to personal preference. Some updates look ridiculous on the same table as their older counterparts... SM terminators and IoB sword-masters are a few prime examples of massive scale change of units.

Depends. I have gone out of my way to purchase certain Malifaux 1e sculpts because I like them better than the 2e sculpts. When it comes to GW its 50/50, Ive sold off most of my older Tau models at this point with the intent to replace them with new ones. With my Daemons, I prefer the old Tzeentch Horror and Flamer minis, but have intermixed them with the new minis as well, even though I prefer to keep it consistent, due to the nature of Tzeentch, it just works. I have replaced all my old bloodlettors and Juan Diaz Daemonettes however with new ones, because I couldnt get enough of the old ones to fill out units.

Hey guys, I've been wondering how many people are modifying their long-time collections when a unit or the entire army gets a facelift?

Occasionally, yes, but it depends on what kind of change happened and what state the old miniatures were in and how many of them there are.

Sometimes, when I think a miniature changes for the better and I have no use for the old ones, (replaced my metal Kasrkin against Scions) I replace them and sell the old ones, sometimes the old miniatures aren't painted or based up to my current standards and it's just easier to buy them new (it's just a pain in the *** to pry Flames of War minatures off their bases), sometimes an old line just looks completely awkward next to new ones (e.g. FoW Gebirgsjager or the old BF SdKfz 251 vs. the new one) and there is always the case of having screwed something up badly years ago, that can't be fixed anymore. I completely botched up the armament, icons, decals and heraldry on my old BTs, plus a few of them were just generic ones from the starter with boring poses, so when the Black Templar upgrade kit came out, I decided to do it right, with a clean slate and replaced everything old.

It depends. When the Dark Eldar got their facelift, I tossed everything I had previously because it wasn't even worth trying to sell. On the other hands, the difference in styles has lead me to keeping older units of Bretonnians. The 5th Ed knights are my Knights Errant. The current batch are my Knights of the Realm. Assuming we ever see anything that would work as new Knights, those would be my Grail/Questing Knights.

I also kept my old Necrons because there was no reason to dump them as the Warriors didn't get revamped. I did convert the guns to bring them in line with the rest of the range, though.

Typically, what I do is that when a new version of a kit is released I relegate the older models to a more "Second line" position. Ex: If I were to resume building my marine chapter I would buy new tac boxes for the battle companies and put the tac marines I currently have in the reserve companies. The new tac marines paint up a lot sharper.

When new versions come out, if I like them enough (it's not enough that they are just "newer" - I have to like them equally if not more than the older ones - which is iffy with GW at the best of times) I'll get the new ones and ADD them to the collection.

I only get rid of stuff when I need to downsize a collection (in which case, it's the newer stuff that goes first anyway). I live in a small house with limited space and this curtails my lead mountain more than anything.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
