Greetings Friends,

I've been passionate about the miniatures hobby for a long time, and like many of you I've always wanted to be part of the creating miniatures games. I started learning to sculpt in ZBrush about a year ago. And I've been working full-time on creating a miniatures game since July.

Relicblade is a small scale fantasy skirmish game where one player takes command of a party of heroes on their righteous quest, while the other player harnesses the brutal fury of the pig men. Brave and wicked alike are drawn to powerful relics lost in the ruins of the ancient world.

The characters are represented on the board by detailed 30mm miniatures while their statistics and abilities are shown on convenient character cards. The real tactical depth comes in as players choose from 25 unique upgrades to specialize their characters to gain a tactical advantage. Will you choose to spec your druid as a support healer, or upgrade her bear form into a DPS monstrosity?

Battles are fought over an unidentified magic item that has drawn the characters to that spot. When characters are finally able to seize the relic it is drawn randomly from the Relic Deck. Relics grant an unnatural boon and are used just like upgrades, however they far surpass any upgrade in power. But if the character wielding the relic is disabled anyone can pick it up.

Standard games of Relicblade are played on a 2'x2' area, players usually only field between three and six characters, and the games only last around 45 minutes. Games are fast paced, dynamic, and exciting. It's not unusual to play several games over the course of a couple drinks. This game is a great way to engage friends in the hobby without asking them to invest hundreds (who are we kidding, thousands) of dollars into an army. The entire game costs less than the digital download of a particular sci-fi games rulebook.

I've separated the print rules and cards from the main set so players choose to purchase them or happily print and play with the pdf. Cards in particular are extremely expensive to manufacture, and are the most expensive component in the game. With the pdf players can also print any number of each upgrade, so it has it's benefits. (If you think about kickstarter campaigns just to fund a card game you may see why I'm not able to include them in the set for free.)

Thanks for taking a look. I'm really excited to share this with you all. I've just gotta share this last story. This past weekend I was showing this game at a comic book convention and on the second day I had multiple fathers and sons come by the table to pick up a set. It was so awesome to see 10 year olds and their dads getting excited to assemble, paint, and play together. It was really any game creators dream come true.

As a fan of skirmish games, and for a game to play with the wife, I am extremely intrigued! I will definitely look into the pdf copies, especially.

Does the starter set, or the card pack, come with more types of heroes than the knight/elf druid/cleric?

So one party MUST be the pigmen? You can't have 2 bands of adventurers fighting it out?

@AegisGrimm At this point there are only the three heroes. I expect to add variant character cards for knights that play a little differently, but the biggest addition will be new characters and monster in future expansions. As new heroes are released players will mix and match new party combinations to find interesting synergy between characters. The heroes generally play more like a D&D party while the pig men do well when used more like an army as they utilize shield wall tactics and other powerful formations.

@Sining Thematically it makes sense to play "good guys" versus "bad guys", but there aren't any formal restrictions. Those other heroes are probably actually in service of some dark lord... maybe anyway. And fighting between pigs can be expected. The pig that gets the relic is probably going to trade it for snacks, so there's no reason to let some other group of pigs take it from you!!

Is this only a 2 player game? Is it possible to play 3 players or 5?

I imagine that an even number of players is easier, but the odd numbers is more likely for me

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

Looks really interesting, and since i have so many friends who like the idea of miniature games, but not the time or money sink, this probably has my money

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

@porkuslime We've done most of the play testing with two players. But because some of its DNA is rooted in tabletop RPGs players could split up the party of heroes against a players commanding a horde of pigs. Also, the battle groups are small enough that four players deployed in the four corners of a board would be a badass death-match game.

Initiative is established at the start of each round, and then players take turn activating models until all characters have been activated. so with multiple players you would just work clockwise around the table.

Now I just want to play a bunch of multi-player games. I wish we could sit down for some games right now! shoot.

@Brennonjw My best friend of 25+ years hadn't ever tried warhammer or warmachine despite my encouragement. He flew down for my birthday last week and while camping we played a bunch of Relicblade and he started getting amped about the hobby. Reaching people that haven't had the chance to get into miniature games was a big part of my design philosophy.

I am interested in purchaseing the PDFs.. but it looks like your site does not work with Paypal. Is there a method I can use Paypal to get the POD rules and cards?

Hi everyone!
I've been working like crazy getting Relicblade ready for Kickstarter next month. I have a few cool things I wanted to share quickly since I've been pouring all my energy into them.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm3Rgu5Kjo7ydJWcxH4PnzQ

I made a few cool videos on YouTube that should help people get a better sense of the game. There's a full play through, a simple overview, and I also started a series on creating characters! I'm personally really excited about the make-minis video. But then, as an artist I get all worked up about that stuff anyway.

I did a bunch of concept art too! The Kickstarter campaign should go live February 9th, and if things work out I hope to start getting into creating these characters.

Man, oh man. I'm really excited to share all of this with you.
I hope you'll look it over, and enjoy it too!

Cheers, friends.

This looks great! I definitely want to follow this.

FYI, you haven't provided a Kickstarter link (not that I saw anyway), and clicking the picture links back to photobucket right now.

I'd put a link in the first post, your latest post, and your signature.

Love everything so far, very excited for the dark wanderer and igor gladiator. Is the dark wanderer a dark marshall/skeleton draconum knight type character?

I have always been a fan or dragonborn/draconum since the inception of mage knight! Keep up the good work!

Will the thief model be available for purchase individually, or is it only part of the full game (or higher) pledge?

In addition to that, are her cards included for people who want a physical copy of the books and cards but no interest in the models?

Found this today. It looks awesome!

I agree with the RPG/Skirmish/Heroquest type of feel and I like that direction a lot.

I don't remember seeing the wave 2 stuff on the KS page. Is that planned for this campaign or future content? The fish men have me highly intrigued

I also have to play my broken record asking about something similar to D&D troglodytes. Given the nature of this, they strike me as a pretty good fit.

I'm in for at least the printed rules and cards but probably some minis too.

It says the deck has 6 hero cards, but there are only 3 starting heroes. What are the other cards? Are the bear and glowing hammer their own cards? If so, what is the sixth one?

Also, why are all the Dark Wanderers named Harold? Very mysterious.

Is this the Relic expansion game we've been waiting on? When is that second KS batch shipping?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

So, nobody knows what the other three hero cards are? I was hoping there are more options that they just don't have miniatures for yet. But I'm thinking it's probably the bear and the spirit weapon and some other ability related thing.

I may have to wait for a future release to find out the story of Harold.

I emailed Sean, the game designer, your question and he replied:

Hi Matt,
There are two copies of the Knight and both the cleric and druid have two cards each. The Cleric has a spirit weapon companion and the Druid has the bear form. So 6 cards, but only the three characters.
The Deck i deliver will have a slightly different composition since I'll add the Thief and her upgrades to the deck.
I know what you mean. I have a rather extensive collection of miniatures myself.
I hope you enjoy the game!
best

Thank you, pancakeonions! I guess with all the options for upgrades and stuff, you could take two knights and have them be pretty different, so having a duplicate might be useful.

My next question was going to be whether or not a rules only pledge would include the thief card, so I'm glad he answered that as well! The game does look pretty fun, so I'm thinking about pledging for at least the rules.

Yup, I pledged $20-ish bucks to get a hardcopy of the rules and cards, so wanted to know about the thief too!

Dive in, it's so cheap!

(plus the closer we get to the dark wanderer, the better!)
