So before people chime in - yes we realize he shouldn't be there in this size game but we really don't care.

my mate was itching to play with his new stuff he finished painting, so a game was in order - i was expecting a game against someone else but they couldn't spare the time, sadly.
We forgot many rules (interceptor stopping the weapon firing in the next shooting phase, etc)

So....

We were using 6th edition which i liked and we used mission 3 from the mechanicum LRB. there were 6 barricades which we took turns in placing - we treated them as area terrain for infantry movement and difficult terrain for vehicles; passing said test would destroy and remove them. all other terrain apart from the corner hill was area terrain (5+) for models entirely inside them and any shot which draws LOS across them (unless the whole model could be seen without obstruction) and we agreed that any model which cannot physically fit through where it is being moved can't go through there.
VP's were scored by having units in the enemy DZ at the end of the game, 2VP's for a 'scoring' unit and 1VP for a 'denial' unit. Secondary missions were 1VP for 'slay the warlord' and and 1 VP for destroying the most enemy units.

I 'planned' to just rush into his DZ from mine with the tanks and deep strike the thallax behind his stuff whenever they came in. the avenger was to go for the LR as it came on and i set up calleb decima as bait for fulgrim, hoping to kill the LR before he was able to get across the board. the plasma fusil thallax were to go for his troops and i expected the whirlwind launchers to take out the drop pod as it arrived.

Forces being used. Yes, there are unfinished models; No we don't care....

I took:
HQ: Calleb Decima with the decima invictus upgrade and a cyber-familiar and a scyllax cohort as a bodygaurd.
Troop 1:Thallax cohort with a p.p.fusil
Troop 2:Thallax cohort with destructor augment
Troop 3:Thallax cohort with destructor augment
Fast attack: Avenger strike fighter with 2 kracken missiles, battle servitor control and chaff launcher
Heavy support: Artillery tank battery with medusa cannon, hull HB, machine spirit and siege plating
Heavy support: Artillery tank battery with medusa cannon, hull HB, machine spirit and siege plating
Heavy support: Artillery tank battery with hyperios launcher
Heavy support: Artillery tank battery with hyperios launcher

My opponent took:
HQ: Fulgrim with +1 paragon blade
Troop 1: legion tactical marines +1 guy and the sarge in artificer armour
Troop 2: EC terminators (rite of war stuff) with LR dedicated transport
Elites: mortis contemtor dreadnought with 2 TL lascannons
Elites: rapier quad mortar team
Elites: rapier quad mortar team
Heavy support: deathstorm drop pod with krack missile upgrade

And here's the way we deployed. emperors children deployed first and went first.

First turn was accompanied by much colourful language;
EC: crack missile deathstorm drop pod came in and scattered, but stayed pretty much where he wanted. the mortis contemptor moved forward through some ruins, the LR moved forward as did the tactical squad on his left while the right side quad mortar moved out from cover for LOS up the right flank. The 4 interceptor shots for the deathstorm drop pod all missed on 1's and 2's. The tactical unit failed to wound the thallax cohort, the LR fired everything at the medusa to it's right causing a 'crew shaken' result. the mortis contemptor fired at the right side medusa also causing a 'crew shaken' result, the quad mortars both fired shatter shells at the same medusa, but did nothing due to cover saves. the deathstorm drop pod then fired at both medusa's causing a 'crew shaken' result on the left one and taking the last hull point off the right side one.

OR:my left hand whirlwind moved around the dead medusa and took cover from the pod behind it. calleb and his retinue moved forward through the ruins they deployed in. the thallax moved forward with the medusa on the right while the whirlwind pivoted to point its front armour at the pod. the medusa used POTMS to fire while crew shaken and killed 7 of them including the sarge. the left side whirlwind fired at the exposed quad mortar causing a wound on the gun, the right side whirlwind fired at the pod and did nothing. Calleb Decima engaged his curse of the omnissiah at the LR - 7 shots, 6 hits, 6 glances; five cover saves made.

sorry, no more pictures as the store was suddenly filled with kids buying magic boosters.

Second turn went almost as well for me;
EC:tactical squad moved forward to the barricade, the LR moved forward and pivoted for firing and immobilised itself - everything else stayed still. a combination of an LR sponson and the deathstorm pod took out the remaining medusa and the whirlwind on the right was taken down by quad mortar shatter shells and mortis lascannon. Fulgrim and honour guard then disembarked, shot at, and assaulted Calleb Decima and the scyllax - a challenge was declared and Calleb accepted. fulgrim went first and thanks to Calleb's low initiative he had 11 attacks on the charge, 9 hits, three instant death strikes and two normal wounds. Calleb took the ID ones first and got a 1 and two 2's. the terminators struck the scyllax down before they got to strike back too.

OR: the avenger came in, the whirlwinds moved forward while staying in cover behind the wrecked medusa's, as did the thallax. The EC mortis contemptor fired at the avenger, forcing it to jink. the thallax shot at the marines and missed, the left side whirlwind tried to shoot at the quad mortar again but got saved to nothing, the avenger fired its kracken missiles and lascannon at the LR and got three hits (both missiles!) which cause a crew shaken result. the last whirlwind fired at the LR out of frustration and did nothing. the thallax then assaulted the marines losing a wound in the first round and doing two back. I don't think thallax can sweeping advance but the way that they were positioned behind the marines meant they were destroyed - the thallax reconsolidated behind cover from the quad mortar direct fire.

Third turn and it's looking bleak..
EC:fulgrim et all move out of the ruin toward the thallax squad and the mortis contemptor moves forward thorugh the ruin. the whirlwind on the right gets destroyed by pod and sponson but the other one stays in one peice thanks to cover. The mortis contemptor then shoots the avenger out of the sky. Fulgrim and his honour guard attempt to shoot at the thallax and assault, losing a terminator to overwatch but killing them all before they got to strike back.

OR: both my thallax cohorts come in - one behined the contemptor, the other aims for behind the LR but lands in the area terrain next to the central quad mortar. both thallax cohorts move into the enemy DZ next to a quad mortar each. the last whirlwind moves toward the enemy DZ and fires at the deathstorm drop pod doing nothing - the thallax shoot at a quad mortar each but only causing a wound on the un-touched gun. both cohorts assaulted and caused no casualties. none.

Fourth turn and i can see the time getting toward closing time...
EC: the mortis contemptor moves out from the ruins into the open while fulgrim and his posse make moves toward the last whirlwind - but the mortis contemptor destroys it in shooting phase. the combat between thallax and quad mortars goes on without casualties locking both cohorts in combat.

Fifth turn - it's close!
EC:the mortis contemptor, fulgrim and his groupie take off toward my DZ, moving and running.

OR: the thallax hit the crews, but their power armour saves everything and they remain locked in combat in the enemy DZ.

Result...
EC: slay the warlord, most units destroyed, drop pod, fulgrim and honour guard in my DZ for 6VP's
OR: two thallax cohorts in enemy DZ for 4VP's

Sounds like a good game. Thanks for sharing.

Did you feel that the 3 man squads of Thallax worked well or did you wish you had made them bigger?

The 9 'bot cohort does make for a blob which won't go away, for sure!!

I've gotten used to the smaller cohort sizes for the small point limit battles - you nearly have the same amount of wounds as a marine squad and are harder to wound and catch, but 'instant death' can ruin the party.
The same can be said for a 6 'bot cohort though.
then theres the leadership check requirements..
etc..
normally i like 6 'bots in a cohort with 2 p.p.fusils.
I've made a thread here...

...For the 'Matrix of Ruin' FOC and Calleb Decima's new 'Isstvan 3 survivor force' unit choice restrictions which both demand a certain amount of thallax being chosen.
