I'm just looking to paint up some Sternguard, I have the heads sprayed white and I'm ready to hit with a wash, but not sure what colour to use. I'm planning to only do a recess wash for shadow, planning to hit the surfaces with some kind of matte varnish to help the flow and also smooth out the white a bit, and also because I don't want to rehighlight up.
Now, I know the usual answer is a blue wash for clean white and brown for dirty, but would a black wash work as well? I'm just looking for a shadow effect, I don't have the skills to rehighlight up to a smooth white, I know from my experience with GK Purifiers. Can anyone with any experience or generosity to test on a spare helmet lend some advice? I would use a helmet of mine own to test but I don't have any spare and I don't want to feth up the 10 I have, as the rest of the helmets I have will be going onto Tacticals.

Here' a guy who gets great results on white Storm Troopers. His whole Imperial Assault painting tutorial series is great. Definitely worth a sit-though.

Edit: in fact, that's practically perfect example of the look I'm going for! Again, many thanks!

Im building a chaos army and I call them the bone legion. My colour scheme also consists of pure white helmets on all of my models. I use pailed witch flesh for basecoat, I then wash with nuln oil and then do a re highlight of pailed witch flesh with a extreme highlight using scar white. for me it seems to work perfect and im super happy with the result (super easy to do as well) Any ways if ur interested In seeing the final result you can either browse throught my gallery or you can click on my PLOG link located in my signature. hope this helps cheers!
I'll do a test shot for you, just give me a bit of time. You want gloss varnish first to lower the surface tension if you want the wash to stay in the recesses, then matt on top after to seal it in.
In some of GW's painting guides, they'll use a 1:1 mix of The Fang and Lahmian Medium applied in the recesses as a wash for white.

Yeah, definitely a smooth gloss finish for washes to allow the wash to run into the recesses. Can add a little bit of dish soap too to break the surface tension of the wash too.
Hey everyone, thanks for the replies and help! I went ahead with the Stormtrooper video's method above. My results were a lot darker than I was expecting. I'm posting the pics today or this weekend in my blog and will post them here too.
I think had I waited a day and seen about the gloss varnish I would have had a better time. As it went, I had to repainted all the surfaces with white, gloss and then pinwash again. It resulted in a thicker coat of white that was hoping for but hopefully next time will go better. I plan to use the methods ou guys mentioned about glossing before washing.
