Hi all, I've just got back into 40k after a short 15 year break. Restarted in Janurary and since then I have painted a few random squads of Orks & IG. Is now time to get stuck into putting an army together. Looking for help, comments, critisism on my painting and/or colour scheme. So let me know what you think. Cheers

They look very good. Subtle shading on the tan colours and the uniform has nice colours to it too, there's more work in those models than you assume at first glance. It looks like a scheme that will suit any IG army once they are assembled en-masse.

Brilliant skill and interesting choice of colours, i would have gone for a lighter armour, close to white, or a darker blue, however as said before i'm sure it will look great en mass!

The models are painted really well. The only criticism I have are the bases.

Using 2 or more basing materials will make them look much better, I.e. add a tuft of grass or a bit of static grass or use different sizes of sand/gravel.

I also prefer the bases to be contrasting to the model instead of using a similiar color. I think that looks better on the tabletop. Sure, for guard with camouflaged uniforms it makes sense to blend with the sorroundings but IMHO it dulls the total visual impression of the table.

Think about the bases right from the start. Once you have painted a hundred guardsmen you are not likely going to rebase them

Some waterslide transfers on the shoulders would be icing on the cake.

The painting is really good and will look good when you have a couple of squads all painted up. The bases i would paint differently since the models already have grey. A brown colour light or dark would work better or use a brown wash on the grey bases and use some grass tufts to make the bases more interesting. Otherwise nice painting and keep painting

I like the colour scheme that you've gone with, but like others have said, I think the base should be done a little differently. The grey on its own looks quite dull.

Other than that, I think you've done a great job!

Kudos on a very solid paint job. The models are very clean!

I also agree with the others about the basing. There is so much freedom here that it can be hard to nail down and I think you just happened to land on one of the few options that just doesn't compliment your colors well. If you want a dull, gray, flat base, I'd recommend painting a street, or pavement with lines. As is, it seems like soot? Ash maybe? or perhaps a moonscape... but with no cratering.

All of those things are fine, but when you get to painting vehicles that move on treads, you'll want to have some of that material 'kick up' and become weathering. that will be really tough when the material is close to the same color as the vehicle itself.

If you're going for a loose material I'd recommend dirt or mud, and if you want to keep your current color I'd recommend pavement or streets.

If you feel strongly about keeping the same basing you currently have, I would still advise breaking it up visually by adding the occasional large rock or tuft or plant life.

Either way, keep up the good work, I look forward to the next pics!

Cheers for all the comments; really helpful. I see what you all mean about the bases. I'm gonna do a couple of test bases - some contrasting ones and see what works. Will post more pic when I'm done.

Looks good, but I agree the grey on the bases is...unfortunate. Matches far too well with the pantaloons of said troopers!

Nice work! I do really like the colour scheme, but maybe I would add a bit of white and red somewhere (maybe a white shoulder pad whit a red stripe?). Red is always good on miniatures

Also, I think you should improve the shading of the clothes, maybe enhancing brighter and darker spots, being more subtle in the transition and using more ink/shade.
You used a black primer, didn't you? If so, maybe you could consider using a white one.

One last thing: I would paint the flat edge of the bases with a light brown, to add more contrast

I'm not digging the mustard yellow armour and gun. But if you like it go for it. The quality of the paint job is above what I expect to see out of a basic trooper which his great. I love the fatigues and skin colour. The base is basic. Lol. Adding that tuft of grass won't hurt. I don't think you need to go crazy on basic troopers though. If it were a larger base I would complain. Change that tan or yellow or whatever it is please.

Stikk bommas are special among ork society for one reason - They know when you pull the pin out of a stikk bomb you throw the bomb not the pin!

I like the colors a lot. I would maybe pick a different color for the gun though to set it apart. Other than that I'm a fan.

Well done mate. I am going to have to echo the comments about the bases. You need something to break them up a bit. What that is is up to you but I'd suggest a maybe a small patch of snow, some or tuft of grass, or both.

You best be posting what you come up with.

Update with more photos. I tried to repaint the old bases... But they looked terrible! Anyway to make my life easier I bought some secret weapon resin bases. They are awesome, saved loads of hassle, just painted them and pinned the guardsmen to them.
