I have this Bones Cthulhu miniature that I sometimes use as a hive tyrant. Since I will soon be going back to playing at my FLGS, I was wondering: would you play against it? Here is a picture.

Is your entire army going to be done up in a similar manner or using Cthulhu/Lovecraftian minis from Reaper and other ranges? If so, not a problem.

No, i'm doing Tyranids. I've done this before, just not at my FLGS.

I would, but a chtulhu/Lovecraft themed Tyranid army would be amazing and probably a bit memorable (at least for me) to play against.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

So Tyranids...using this as the Tyrant? Little effort goes a long way really. This doesn't fit the Tyranid aesthetic. It fits Daemons fine, Tyranids? Not really. Tyranids are all about being the curves you see.
When I suggested the army being done up in a similar manner or using other miniatures? I literally meant doing an entire Tyranid army where Gribbly X is your Hormagaunts, Gribbly Y is your Warriors.

Just base it right. When based right. If this is a quick proxy then yes. If your army is in this style then yes. If you just replaced your tyrant modl with this model every game then still yes but with less enthusiasm (read I would rather not like you to add it to your army) since it doesn't really fit.

What he said ^^, although I probably wouldn't stop bickering about the proxy given half a chance in the third case. As long as it's the only model like that, it wouldn't be big enough a deal to stop me from playing against it.

When it comes to my opponents, I don't care all that much about what you use (within reason) as proxies, just so long as it's made clear to me in advance what rules apply to what models, and it's easy to remember.

I'd prefer not to, unless your whole army was done in the same theme. That isn't a Tyranid model, it's a random demon-like thing. It's better than using an empty base or cardboard box, but you should get the real model.

It's a big green monster with claws, wings and tentacles.
From the perspective of a SM player without a real in depth understanding of the Tyrranids codex and models:
It all looks the same to me.

If it's similar in size then why not. At the end of the day, it's a model and this is only a game.
Ithanks will probably be a bit less conspicuous when it's painted up anyway

Because I imagine that there will probably be people just like me at his FLGS. People who know their own army and codex pretty well, but other codices much less well, especially the ones that aren't played very often against them.
Against those players, he shouldn't have a difficult time using his proxy. All he has to say is: "Hey. I'm using this as a hive tyrant." I know what the rules for a hive tyrant are. That stands out enough for me to remember what it stands for.
For game play purposes, non-problematic.

So you don't know the codex to the point where you apparently can't recognise something that's clearly not a Tyranid but you do know the rules....
If it's close to the actual model and I know what it has I'd probably be fine with it.

Sure. I'll play against Legos if you can work out a system where we aren't confused about which model is which. Whether my opponents are happy with a cheap alternative to an army or are simply "in progress" on constructing it, I can dig it and will play against it. I prefer the real models for my own army, though.

Yeah, I'm not seeing that at all. On top of not looking anything like a Tyranid model it isn't at all WYSIWYG.
