So my buddy sent me some old fantasy orc Boyz and i'm in the process of turning them into 'eavy armor boyz for my bad moons but I've run into something not seen in 40k. I was hoping for some help painting different colors of wood for their handles and shields.

I'd recommend painting a bright brown, heck possibly an orange, and then using a wash for a maple like stain. Just apply the wash more heavily in some areas of the wood to give it the ring effect you'd see in a 2x4. Then you could use a darker brown for a mahogany wood.

I'd say for the wash, use Agrax Earthshade (from GW) and then whatever colors you want to use for the base layer.

FINAL EDIT (hopefully): I'd look up different styles of wood to see the colors that they got and go from there.

You're gonna want to have a look into actual wood, then decide what quality of wood. For example, if you want low-quality, untreated wood, you'll want about 3 different shades of wood, medium, dark and light.

Dark basecoat, wash with a medium brown like Agrax, paint over the panels with medium, avoiding recesses and lines, then a few highlights of light.

For heavier, treated wood, you'll want to go darker, dark brown basecoat, medium layer, then the wash with a fleshy colours

Thanks for the help. I was really worried it would turn out too similar to my leather on the boyz so I borrowed a lighter shade of brown and dry brushed with Karak stone for a dead wood look after agrax.

One mistake I make a lot with paitning wood is starting with a dark brown. Wood is fairly light, even stained wood. Pick a warm medium brown from whatever paint range you use and either highlight or wash from there.
