So I've built an army without any concrete way to paint it in my head, and its completely stalled me.
It is a mechanised infantry force, with Cadian torso's and legs, and Tempestus scion helmets (the ones with goggles, not berets) and scion hot shot lasguns or special weapons.I did this because I wanted a more high tech look, but dislike the breastplate armor look of the scion torsos.
The first though I had was to paint them black, but I really don't want to as my primary army is Deathwatch and I paint black a lot already.
And I'm really not inspired by any of the red painted IG I can see either - the tanks look like giant targets, and the large flat areas really don't pop out. So with black and red out, I'm really unsure. I spent a long time looking online at what people had done, but it seems people really don't go too far from the standard at all with Inqusitiorial IG.
I'm wondering if people have any ideas or photos/images for inspiration? I'm probably looking for a 2-3 tones used - for infantry one for the armor, one for the cloth underneath and one for the embossing and/or gun surfaces. The tanks would be similar - primary, secondaries for either chevrons or maybe the turret platings etc.
Attached is a picture of one of my troopers so you can see what my infantry looks like.

You could go just short of the Pure Black look, and do a Black/Grey camo pattern to break up the monotony of the black. Add to this some Dazzle style camo on your tanks, you can have some fun with that if you go into the real Artistic style Dazzle camo.

You've shown a lot of love for these guys, make their Inquisition overlords show that same appreciation for sartorial magnificence. Cream cloth, purple armor and gold trim. If you're feeling really ambitious, add some giant cat pelt patterns as well.
Tiger stripes, leopard spots etc.

I second this idea. It keeps within the uniform black Deathwatch uses with a bit of IG flare with camo. If you're good with freehand work, you have a multitude of black/grey camo patterns you can go with to make them look really interesting. Also, dark blues tend to substitute for black very nicely. I always thought Death Korps of Krieg seemed to aesthetically match Deathwatch as an IG counterpart. Maybe add some skulls and other intimidating iconography to the models as well to mimic this?

Nice conversion, I agree about the scion breast plate, looks a bit too medieval knight for me. I've chosen Russ (space wolves) grey uniform & zandri dust armour for my army. Had mixed comments on it, but it's a bit different from the norm.

I've seen some Gue'va' sa in the gallery (which are basically hi-tech guard) done in a very nice snow trooper scheme; black cloth and white armour with grey for bits and bobs (insignia, commas panels, etc.). Can't remember who did it though. Automatically Appended Next Post: It was Sirath and I forgot about the orange/yellow/gold tags:

I agree that white looks pretty good to contrast the deathwatch, I reckon with red stripes/markings and your choice for the cloth sections.

They look good - I like the look of the death korp of krieg ones too. Blue grey base shading up to grey?

Could work - would it be too much like dark angels?

Kind of like an urban camo scheme? Are there tutorials for that sort of thing?

I'm thinking it would look very gaudy en masse - but I think it will work for a certain inquisitor I've been wanting to paint.

This could work, but again, I'm unsure as to how I would paint this up close or on larger vehicles?

Interesting. I like the look of white over black, but the Tau versons have a lot more seams between plates compared to the IG to make that look pop. Also how would you make that work on a Chimera or Leman Russ?
RokNinja wrote:I agree that white looks pretty good to contrast the deathwatch, I reckon with red stripes/markings and your choice for the cloth sections.
Indeed. It seems a few people are including white in their options. I might need to see what I can mock up along with the grey and the camo scheme and see what I can replicate well.
Off to ebay to buy some cheap tanks and IG troops I think before I start work.
If anyone else has any ideas and especially any pictures I would love to hear and see them.

Yes, somewhat like modern Urban schemes is what I was suggesting, though you could deliberately start with the Black and work Upward on the greys instead of light to dark.
As to Dazzle camouflage, I'd imagine there ARE tutorials out there amongst the Warship modeling community especially, because of the prevalence of Dazzle on warships. But the general concept to Dazzle is to provide false shadows and highlights on the subject, so as to confuse visual engagement options by making it hard to identify the actual angle of the subject in the enemy's eyes. Examples are Measure 33, and similar designs, from the US Navy.
It was mostly in WW1, because into WW2 they were getting into extremely long view ranges, so it was tactically easier to simply use paint to provide a false horizon line on the warship so the enemy would have trouble identifying it at distance. This is where you see camouflages like Measure 22, where the lower sections of the ship, and all the horizontal surfaces, were painted dark blue to blend with the sea, and the higher surfaces were all in haze grey to blend with the skyline.

Well you could always use the inquisition colors as the spot color instead of the whole thing.
so like a red white and or gold shoulder pad and the rest a normal color scheme.
i think greys browns and or blacks work super well.
green would work well with the white or gold shoulder pads
and the neutral colors would work well with any of them.
personally id love to see a camo green with white shoulder pads and a gold inquisition I and lenses in red.

The only Stormtrooper I have painted has Loren Forest armor with Ushabti Bone cloth. On the cloth is also a simple pattern of multiple black spots with smaller grey spots over them. Sort of a fancy-but-not-that-great-at-hiding-stuff-camo.
