Subject: One Week Iron Warriors - a Heresy era self-inflicted challenge
My name is Mad Doc Grotsnik, and I am a reluctant painter. Also, a tremendously lazy painter.
Yet in June (23rd to be precise), I'm planning to run a game of Apocalypse at Warhammer World. And that means I need to get my army painted. And let's be honest - the sooner the better. Oh, June might seem a long way off, until I examine the actual time available to me. By Monday, I'll have five months to get it all done. And here's my army (off the top of my head, may miss a unit or two)
20 strong Legion Tactical squad
20 strong Legion Tactical squad
10 strong Legion Support squad with Flamers, Deimos Rhino
5 strong Legion Support squad with Meltaguns, Deimos Rhino
5 strong Legion Support squad with Plasmaguns, Deimos Rhino
10 Iron Warriors Havocs with Lascannon (whether this will be one or two squads ultimately, I'm undecided!)
5 Legion Terminators in Tartaros armour, with Volkite and Lightning Claws
3 Castelax with Darkfire Cannon
3 Domitar
5 strong Custodes squad
1 Caladius Grav Tank
Characters yet to be decided, but definitely a Warsmith, so I can field the Battle Automata (Iron Brotherhood I think, can't actually remember, which is shameful).
So as you can no doubt see, it's predominantly an infantry force. Theme I've gone with a loyalist 'forgotten' Garrison - one of the dozens if not hundreds left behind to maintain compliance once the Great Crusade rumbled on. So I'm going for a deliberate lack of big heresy toys - I see these guys as typically being left with the more basic equipment to suit their particular world.
It's all procured, and mostly assembled (1 Castelax, 3 Rhinos and the Havocs to be built, which I'll do the remainder of this week), so for the most part I'm ready to rock.
Now, onto that surprisingly tight timescale.....out of those five months? Well, five days a week I'll be out the house 14 hours a day thanks to work and it's commute. That leaves me roughly three to four hours a night in which to fit in dinner, TV catch up, washing up, shower and general winding down from work. Leaving of course my weekends. Friday night is pub night, and 50% or so of Saturday mornings/afternoons will be hangover, or else otherwise doing stuff. Sundays are typically housework catch up, such as laundry, hoovering and whacking some bleach down the bog.
So my actual painting time is stupidly restricted - and that's where next week comes into play. I've got 9 days off starting Saturday. And by the end of that weekly session, I'm hoping to have at least my Astartes infantry all done - so 70 MkIII (gotta love Prospero!) power armour dudes, fully painted and based. I'm sure you'll agree that'll see the back of the mission broken, leaving me with 'fun' stuff to paint thereafter - with the chore units out of the way.
Can I do it? Sure. If I extract digit from orifice. In theory, it's just 10 Astartes a day - decals and transfers and stuff can wait for now, as those can go on pretty much anytime, and I need to get a couple of FW transfer sheets first too.
I'll endeavour to put piccies up as a I go.
Paint scheme? Not being artistically inclined, I'm going to crib it from the following video, which seems a reasonable tabletop standard achieved with minimum faffing.

This is the kind of painting I'm all about! Get a crazy idea a month before a tournament and get a whole army together...but I usually try to get best painted too

To be fair, this one has been gestating for a long old time - but it was the release of Prospero, the discovery of Darksphere being reasonable 'after work' close to my coach stop, and a third copy for Chrimbo that made it possible
Best painted can wait. I'll be happy with 'actually painted' for now! I can speed paint when I need to (did an entire Necron army in one night.....), but want to take my time with this one, simply because it's been gestating for yonks.
Headcanon wise, Custodes are there for two reasons - to show they are in fact Loyalist Iron Warriors to other Imperial forces, and, y'know, to actually make sure they are Loyalist!
Battle Automata are in because they're hella cool

I am just finishing up a couple squads of raptors I started painting in 2009.
Have painted a ton of other things since then, but this one eluded me.
The advice I have: stick with the plan. If you set a goal for what you want to achieve each night, you can do this. Keep it practical, what messes with me is the sense that I bit off too much.
9 full days to do 70 minis, though, I dunno about that. My eyes would give out. If you can get them assembled in the first 2-3 days you might well pull it off.
Thankfully, the paint job for these is pretty straight forward. Got a can of Chaos Black Xl, and two of Leadbelcher.
Those outright to see the models around 60/65% done before they even see a brush. First wash with Agrax, drybrush then Nuln Oil will take them to roughly 80/85% done, and being MkIII with all its lovely raised areas, that might prove plenty.
Fiddly bit will be the guns...but even those are quickly enough dealt with.
Custodes bits can't be started until Wednesday when I can first pick up that gold spray. But after that, and much like the Iron Warriors, that's them given a damned good start!

I have painted Iron Warriors a few times (mainly as Havocs for my Black Legion "cult" / 13th crusade army gathering).
Sorry to hear spray painting is not ideal now due to the weather.
I would Black prime thoroughly.
Spray a "Paynes Grey" (black with some blue in it) reasonably well over.
Mask off areas you want to keep black.
You may want to cover any belt pouches as well.
Spray mainly from above but still reasonably well over the model in grey, your choice of how dark.
Then spray or heavy drybrush all the raised areas in a grey metallic like Leadbelcher, whatever best matches the grey base coat.
The metallic is reasonably transparent so you do not have to be neat about covering completely and would look like an authentic weathering or "patina" or wear/lighting not lazy painting.
Edge highlight with a bright silver any raised edges near the top of the model, prominent bits not everything.
Water down slightly the same paint and feel free to smear a little in logical areas of wear where the armor would be rubbed like front of leg armor.
Unmask the black areas.
You can get really thin pin-stripe mask OR cut thin strips of masking tape for covering your hazard stripe for areas you want to keep black and apply them.
Press down hard on these, you do not want any leaks under the mask.
<edit> You may have a steady enough hand to free-hand this, I have and it looks reasonably good, the masking however has a nice sharp look to it which may be worth it.
Put down a darker layer of yellow first, neatly and not too wet.
Free-hand a very thin line along one side of each stripe with a much brighter yellow, you do not have to be too careful... trust me, this fussy little bit makes the yellow pop.
Take the mask off and paint any details you wish like normal.
Fix all the various brush slips or leaks of paint.
Only if everything looks painted how you want, then hit with Shade.
New looking I would use the black, brown for dirty/old/battle-worn.
Target the recesses, not so much smear everywhere... I made that mistake before.
These guys were the main reason I got an airbrush: what I described here would take less than an hour of work time for a squad.
I am unsure what is available in "rattle-can" paints at your end but I was using "Liquitex" paints prior to the airbrush: many of their paints are sold in spray cans and different nozzles can be purchased for "fine" spraying.
Hope this helps with the fast and not so dirty painting so you can spend more time at the pub with your friends. Any added time is dry-time and I use that to paint more guys that are farther along.

Thinking I may have a duff spray, as it's happened again - but not as pronounced.
Have decided to pservere with Leadbelcher. Hopefully it'll come up ok.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Great success!!!
There's the odd one or two in the two batches so far which have unfortunately caught a slightly heavy coating, but nothing a wash and careful highlight can't take care of.
So I've now got 20 based and primed, which should be enough for tomorrow.
10 more need their base coat, and are ready to go tomorrow morning.

When I started my 30k iron warriors, I had thought it would be a quick process. Turns out I was very wrong... Trying not to make them look just silver and washed, by keeping the hazards neat, getting the lenses right etc has made them take significantly longer than expected. Still very satisfying to watch them grow.
I'll be watching how you get on with interest, and if you have time during your visit, and fancy an IW loyalist/traitor face off, let me know
