I believe the broodlord rolls 3d6, same as normal stealers, but gets to add his lowest dice roll to his highest one. It's either that or his two highest, sorry it was late and a lot of beer.

Blips are 1=3 only, no zeros and no 4-6. I think this is at least partially due to the size of the tiles.

Pretty certain storm shield is parry for the front only.

The new tiles are very detailed and VERY thick. I really, REALLY hope FFG goes into the tile and scenario business for Space Hulk. The tiles are one of the best parts of the new set.

That's only if FFG use the same printer as GW did. FFG didn't have anything to do with Spacehulk, all done by GW. But yes, the tiles are excellant.

I've been impressed with FFG's quality assurance. Though, yes, I would want the same printer. I'd pay good money for new scenarios, specific to new tiles. I understand we probably won't get dedicated new minis, but GW makes plenty of minis. I plan on making a Wolf Guard Space Hulk unit as well with their new plastics. And Harlequins. And maybe some Emperor's Children

For 1st edition their was officially an expansion for "Deathwing" and Genestealer cults... there was also a compendium/campaign book that GW had that included Chaos terminators. The Necron rules he wrote like 6-7 years ago. Necron and Tau are probably the most lacking in rule resources but that one Necron site I though was pretty good. It'd be great if after its completely released to get some people together and write up rules for all the races, for this edition. The rules, more than 1st edition, need to be more set piece, with predefined squad configurations.

Its a sweet boxed set, even for the price.

The ONLY bit of critique I have regarding the game is the 12 missions.

Not only are 8 of them reprints from past editions (Missions 1-5, 9 & 10 are basic missions from 1st and 2nd edition Sin of Damnation and Spawn of Execration campaign, mission 12 is from the 1st ed space hulk campaigns book) but they were remiss on printing more missions without promise of more to come.

It seems to behoove GW to make a campaign book akin to 1st edition, but given the alleged limited nature of this product, such a needed product may never come to pass.

Regardless, there were a total 76 missions in 13 campaigns printed in their various publications (including the newest 4 missions), so I think it wouldn't be too hard for GW to simply fill in the majority of that blank space by producing a campaigns book.

So there is yet more money for GW to make there. I really hope that GW will not be remiss in this opportunity to latch onto that cash.

Doubtful. Unless GW gets smart and decides to print more copies of Space Hulk (feth this limited quantities bs, honestly, what a way to kill my enthusiasm for a product..."LOLZ BETTER BUY IT NOW BEFORE THEY'RE GOOOONE!"), but how often does GW do anything besides shoot itself in the foot?

Back from my local shop, so here are some answers about rules (as translated in french). Updated from precedent post, more differences than expected.

Some differences V1 vs V3 :

* Command points : from 1 to 6, terminators player takes a random token and keeps it secret. If one sergent is alive, can choose to take another one but must stick to it. No other bonuses from officers. CP use as V1.

* Time : no influence from number of officers still alive.

* Guard : this new mechanism cost 2AP and is not cumulative with overwatch (it's either one or the other). It allows you to reroll one dice in close combat, after seeing the genestealers rolls if you want. Nothing is specifed about facing so it works even if attacked from rear. It will stay until the end of the genestealers' turn, obviously even if attacked.

* Sustained fire : it gives +1 to your roll (so 5+ to kill with a storm bolter) maximum, no more bonus possible even with 3 or more shots. No sustained fire while moving, as V1. It works even on overwatch ! But it is lost if another action takes place between 2 shots, even from another model. Same for assault cannon.

* Overwatch/ jamming : 2AP, range 12. As V1, you jam on overwatch if you roll a double (storm bolter). But if you spend 1 CP to unjam, terminator is immediately back to overwatch for free. Also, if a storm bolter is jammed at the end of a turn, it is repaired for free at the beginning of next turn. Overwatch include firing at a door if it closes in the LOS of a terminator at 12 range or less.

* Attacking doors : as a standard combat, you need a 6 to destroy a door, except for chain fist (automatic).

* Blips lurking at entry points : same as V1 (so they kept that funny rule).

* Lightning claws : 2D6+1, choose highest roll, from front only.
* Force sword : allow a parade (force genestealer to reroll a dice), from front only.
* Thunder hammer : +1 to combat roll, front only, cumulative with sergeant bonus.
* Storm shield : genestealer has one less dice so 2D6.
* Assault cannon : rules as for storm bolter (moving, overwatch), but no jam, and rolls 3D6 killing on a 5+, 4+ sustained fire. 10 shots, comes with 1 reload, catastrophic failure as V1. No full auto.
* Heavy flamer : 2AP to fire, no move and fire order possible. Range 12. Affect a whole area of the board, kills on a 2+. Surviving models can move, but needs to reroll for each affected case. 6 shots, no reload.

* Librarian : has +1 in close combat, comes with 20 psy points, and can use them either to :
- get bonuses in close combat, each psy point can convert to +1 to your roll (force axe)
- use one of the 3 psy powers, they cost 0 AP, do not count as an action, and you can launch them when you want
>> foresight : 1 psy point, basicaly +1 command point
>> force barrier : 2 psy points, target one case, range 12, no LOS required, said case cannot be entered by anyone until the end of the turn
>> psy storm : 3 psy points, can target a genestealer or a blip (kills on 2+) or a whole section (kills on 4+, roll for each model).

* Broodlord : if the mission says broodlord is present, you can use a "3 genestealers" blip to have the broodlord. Needs 2 wounds at the same time to get killed (6 and 6 from a stormbolter, and so on). Immune to flamer and psy storm. In close combat, adds its lowest and highest dices.

* Ladders : 1 AP for stealers, 2 AP for terminators. Terminators can fall on a 1 (D6).

We will play with these rules for a while on our local shop to see how it goes. IMHO, going back to the V1 rules for CP and time for exemple would be easy and better. For close combat weapons, we'll see how they perform with the new guard mechanism.

Hope it answered your questions, feel free to ask if you get others !

I hear ya, but unfortunately I am happy to oblige by buying several copies and then the left over rules/tiles and other game pieces from people who are buying it just for the models. I would have been at the front of the line even if it wasnt a limited product.

While the limited nature of the product may very well turn out to be true, if it does sell out very quickly only a fool would ignore the continued profit potential of keeping it in print.

Plus it will keep the fleabay scalpers from their craft.

Yeah, that measly little 75,000 copies is a drop in the bucket!! What the hell, just because they had to estimate demand for a product 6-12 months in advance is no excuse not to be able to read minds and get the number just perfect!!!

Seriously, if the game wasn't as good as it is, 75k would be plenty. Hell, if they just reprinted 1st edition Space Hulk with the current stealers and AoBR terminators, probably 10k would be good enough. The big problem? It's a damn good game. Making something that looks good, and sells well, isn't shooting yourself in the foot.

And why should limited quantities kill your enthusiasm?

When most of them are different poses, and better than the regular miniatures we pay more money for? No. And a lot of us consider it a game, not just terrain. Agricola, Settlers of Cataan, and Pandemic are boxes of cardboard that range from 40 to 70 dollars, and well worth it. Space hulk is a great game, the components are high quality and well made. That you can use the 33 miniatures for 40k as well is a bonus. The cost is easily inline with other boardgames.

So now it's 75,000. Does anyone here actually know, or just throwing a random number out there every time?

And about estimating demand, that's my point, why does it have to be a limited run to begin with? Sell the game like a regular item instead of a "limited edition". If you underestimate demand, then you can fething print more.

mikhaila wrote:

No, but selling it in very limited quantities to ensure that you only ever sell exactly that many copies and everyone else who wants one is just going to be boned, is.

mikhaila wrote:

Because if I can't afford to buy it right now, then I'm going to miss out because of all the eBay scalpers buying multiple copies to list on eBay for stupidly high prices. I'm not going to be able to get a copy before they sell out because I don't have $100 lying around for surprise board game purchases.

1. Yes, it's a 75,000 copy print run. Yes, I actually know and am not throwing out random numbers.

2. Print runs have to be set at some number. This isn't a case of pushing a button and turning out 100 more. The various pieces are contracted out, and the final amounts shipped to a warehouse for assembling. It's a process that takes several months. A number must be set, and that's how many get produced. Another run could be done later. Depends on demand, time available to the various factories making the components, etc. Might happen, might not.

3. 75k is not very limited quantities, it's actually a damn big print run.

4. Because if I can't afford to buy it right now, then Not something that GW worries about, and not a criteria of how they set print runs. Sorry.

5. Not much of a surprise, most people have assumed it was going to be spacehulk a long time ago.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Thanks so much Olaf! That was a really helpful recap (perhaps we should break out that recap and post in Dakka discussions with the thread header: 'rules changes for the new Space Hulk', or something like that).

I totally agree that a whole bunch of those rule changes seem really strange, but I'm definitely interested in trying them as I'm assuming when you take all the changes together they all balance out (one would hope!).

For example, the Broodlord sounds nigh indestructible, but I'm going to guess that in any mission he's present you'll also have the Librarian to punk him in CC or an Assault cannon to give you a chance of killing him with shooting.

It sounds like 'Overwatch' and 'Guard' are even more instrumental to the game than ever. If you have a CC termie and you're not putting him into 'Guard' on your turn (and there is a stealer or blip within 6 squares) you're just being nuts.

And you indicated that Sustained fire works on Overwatch? So the 2nd and subsequent Overwatch shot at the same target is hitting on a 5+? If so, wow that's a big change (along with being able to clear a jam and go back into overwatch with only one command point) that really makes Overwatch waaaay better than it used to be.
