Its a lot of cardboard terrain? The cardboard is alot thicker and denser than most cardboard. And the type of printing on it isn't cheap. If you go to a toy store a little 9x12" puzzle costs $15-$20. This board can cover the better part of a gaming table. That close to 12 times the size of that dinky puzzle for only 5 times the cost. They could have done it in plastic for as much, I'm sure but they probably thought this would be cheaper.

None of us now how much it really costs to print and die-cut cardboard or how that compares with special plastic moulds for terrain tiles.
The fact that the Planet Empires box, with 48 tiles, costs almost £30 might give us a clue.
While I would have liked 3D plastic corridors it would have made the game much less colourful. Lots of players would never have painted their corridors.

That's a great point, killkrazy. Just looking at the photo above your post you can see how the beautifully detailed, but unpainted terminators look no more than colored game pices on the photo-realistically rendered tiles.

Ooops, meant "parry" of course .
It's true though that they love a parade. Unfortunatly it usually does not impress the genestealers so much...
yakface wrote:Thanks so much Olaf! That was a really helpful recap (perhaps we should break out that recap and post in Dakka discussions with the thread header: 'rules changes for the new Space Hulk', or something like that).
Could glady do, with better presentation, but would need someone to reread it and translate to proper english after.
For example, the Broodlord sounds nigh indestructible, but I'm going to guess that in any mission he's present you'll also have the Librarian to punk him in CC or an Assault cannon to give you a chance of killing him with shooting.
Most probably ; I will have a look at missions more closely this week. The ones we played were the same as V1 (which are excellent anyway).
And you indicated that Sustained fire works on Overwatch? So the 2nd and subsequent Overwatch shot at the same target is hitting on a 5+? If so, wow that's a big change (along with being able to clear a jam and go back into overwatch with only one command point) that really makes Overwatch waaaay better than it used to be.
Yep, terminator on overwatch gets the bonus, so 5+ on second shot (4+ for assault cannon). If you spare a few CP for the genestealers' turn, a single storm bolter can control a corridor with quite good reliability.
It sounds like 'Overwatch' and 'Guard' are even more instrumental to the game than ever. If you have a CC termie and you're not putting him into 'Guard' on your turn (and there is a stealer or blip within 6 squares) you're just being nuts.
It is strange to have the lightning claws becoming "defense asset". Wonder if they are gonna be as reliable as a SB to control a corridor. At 2D6+2, they were nice for breakthrough.
Reason for the change is probably that 2D6+2 *plus* a dice reroll would be too much.
I totally agree that a whole bunch of those rule changes seem really strange, but I'm definitely interested in trying them as I'm assuming when you take all the changes together they all balance out (one would hope!).
On first view, yes it seems to balance out, but this week we'll be playtesting it a little more.
Anyway, it has always been Space Hulk biggest success : core rules are so solid, that you can tweak them a little to your taste without killing balance. At worse we can still play V1 with a much better looking board (not even speaking of the terminators ). Or a V1/V3 mix. Even use that old Space Hulk campaigns book again .
Only thing that is gonna be difficult is to get "ambush", "0" and "6" blips. May have to order a complete alternate set, like a Litko one.

I guess if you only count the last 10-15 years or so of GW history, they've not done a standalone board game. Considering some of their customers weren't alive that far back...

Yeah, pulled that campaign book out after some time. 4 campaigns, 4 stand-alone missions, some extra tiles and counters, and rules for CSM and PA Marines. The only challenge would be finding Genestealer hybrids
Another thought that I think might make a nice little SH mission - something involving a Lictor. Less Aliens and more Alien, albeit with a lot of firepower.
Anyways, not long now.

I like the lictor idea. Stand alone badassery.
Saw the game being played in my local GW today. Those models are just great. The kid playing it kept enthusiastically handing me one after the other saying "and look at this one!"
He was damn right to. The Broodlord is huge and the dead termi is bigger than I would have thought, and good for it.

so many people have asked what hasn't been done before...
it seems pretty evident to me, as a guy who has owned all the versions and expansions, that this one is about the minis...
we have never had a box game with all unique minis...
the original minis had a couple variants at most, and they were all crap...
this is a whole new realm of production for a box set...
i don't play the games anymore, but i bought this just so i could have a chance to paint the minis...
well worth it to me...
cheers

Oh, I still have those from Advanced Space Crusade (among the silliest games GW ever made, way too complex, games were meant to take weeks to complete).
But I could do space hulk on those tiles. Terminators boarding the 'nid ships, oooh.

3D plastic corridors would have cost a lot for GW to produce as injection moulds are very expensive. Also, it would be a bit of a project just to get a good looking board ready to play on. This is a board game at the end of the day, which people will want to be able to pick up, play, and put away again. 3D plastic corridors would have made this impractical.

I hope I don't get stuck with "it's been two weeks since it was released, you could have bought it in a store already, but here is your pre-order copy". Sadly GWUK ain't no GWUS. If it were GWUS it would have shown up about half an hour after I put the order in, but GWUK could me October is my Hulk Month.

I dunno, maybe plastic corridors was too much to ask for. All I know is I got pretty damn excited at the 3D Space Hulk projects I've seen people working on. I guess I could just get the Hirst Arts molds and some CoD frames and do it myself if I really wanted to, but the cardboard is a lot more practical...even if it is ugly and makes it harder to really get into the game.
I just wish it was either cheaper or not a limited edition.

Hopefully it will be by Thursday the 3rd, else I won't see it until at least Tuesday because of the Holiday weekend. So far, I have gotten one pre-order on time out of 8 attempts by GW. The longest wait was almost a month because of an error with my Planetstrike order which was a week late to begin with.

Is it a lie? Some of you seem to be awfully quick with this kind of comment. I thought the 'never done before' bit was the fact that it's complete boxed game with a limited release run. While I don't know why it has a limited run, I don't recall them doing this before (at least not deliberately - there have obviously been plenty of boxed games that have had their support withdrawn some time after being released).
I've been told there are only going to be 25,000 released. I have no idea whether that's accurate (it sounds rather low), but my local store is getting 25 of them.
