I just like this picture i just took, and also i did some very little hard to notice little touch ups. So i thought instead of just uploading to gallery, ill put it in a thread here. Also i darkened alot of the steel on 1 hell drake because before it was all way to bright.

God damn i cant figure out also weather to varnish them or not, they are never touched except for the bases, and are always stored in a box when not in use. What do you guys reckon?

It depends if you're happy with the finish. If so, sweet, no need to varnish really. If you want to make them more matte or add a little sheen, then try a varnish.

What happens if some one accidentally touches it? does the sweat or grease eventually do some thing over time..?

Like how would you clean that? What would you do if some one accidently touched a model you loved, but you could see no visible marks, but still. What would you do? leave it and not care because it still looks fine?

I really wouldn't worry too much about it. the odd touch here and there isn't going to do anything really.

Yeah, i hope so.

What about satin varnish, what are your thoughts on that compared to using gloss or matte?

Thank you!

It honestly comes down to personal preference at the end of the day, I go for matte varnish now, but satin is passable/good and gloss is a no go unless your scheme is going for a glossy look.

Nice NotOnline he looks awesome.

Well i dont want my colors to be darkened, and aparently matte does that a little bit?.

Dont want it shiny so you cant even see it properly if the lights hitting it because its so reflective.

So yeah...

Nope it's a old boxset CSM lord.

I did not use gloss, infact it's only got washed with nuln oil, the effect i created by layers of drybrushing over the baseline model with metalic mixtures (about a 3rd ghenas gold chainmail metal and evil sunz scarlet i belive) for the Copper tone, aswell as varying layers of green, red and black aswell as the copper mixture applied over it with drybrushing.

Can you please tell me how you did the cape Tyranid?

Like did you do many layers of very thin coats, or just regular layers, or layers then glaze to blend it in?

Thanks either way. Nice work also!

Thanks! One of the pitifully-few units I've actually properly finished painting, and my first attempt at colour blending with my then-new airbrush on the sword blades. Happy with how it went.

They are Narn G'Quan Heavy cruisers from the tv series Babylon 5. Varnish depends on the model, always for metal models and only when needing an effect on plastic or resin (gloss varnish on gemstones for example)

Thank you both kindly

The cloak was a mixture of wet blending and glazing to pull the colours together. Lots of thin layers and going back and forth to get the desired effect. Happy in the end but like anything, it can always be improved.

Just snapped this pic of a sarge I was painting while I was grabbing formal shots of my entry for this month’s challenge. It’s not often I look at a pic and think it’s actually making the model look better then it is, rather then highlighting all the flaws.

I don’t varnish. I play with my models. I’m careful with them, and they hardly need touching up. That said, I only paint at a table top level. If I did better work, I might be more concerned with preserving it. But I paint to play, so just having things behind glass to look at is not why I’m here. YMMV.
