True, but do they have enough? It's possible what editors they have are overworked and swamped. Maybe they're looking to add more for that reason. They've definitely been cranking out a lot of books lately.

Do any editors actually get excited about their work..?
I mean, I get as excited about Farsight fighting in the oxide desserts, or Fabius Bike going on adventures, as the next literate person, but would hitting spellcheck on those things excite me?

Sounds like you'd make a pretty poor editor. I have a friend who goes straight for formatting/consistency editing as soon as I hand him any documents like it's the most fascinating thing in the world no matter how many times I say "I'd like to worry about content to start with and edit for style later". That's one possibility, but I think they need a creative director who coordinates all the disparate Codex-writing teams that don't talk to each other way more than they need more copy-editors.

Spellchecking fluff doesn't matter. It's the utter crap that slides into (or out of) the rules due to shoddy/non-existent editing.

Spellchecker won't catch Bolted instead of Bolter as well.
I do auditing so this is the kind of thing I kinda get excited about. However I would not relocate to England to work for GW being an editor. Automatically Appended Next Post: JohnnyHell wrote:Voss wrote:

They probably would be, especially BCB, but not many people are going to uproot themselves and leave their current jobs to do it.

Do they actually need to move to GW HQ for this job? I would assume editing/proofreading is a job that can be done very easily remotely without ever having to actually appear in the office itself. With skype/telephones/whatever you can easily do a live conversation meanwhile I'd wager most of the work is likely done on computer anyway with back and forth being done with sending files.
The job being listed at Nottingham is likely just GW's own internal reference to the fact that its work connected with the HQ more than anything else. At least this would be my assumption.

I proofread a few FFG books back in the day, and there's a level of excitement in seeing stuff before it gets released, but I imagine that might wear off with the sheer amount of product GW puts out.

During COVID era, it seems like that, while you can do many thing in terms of WFH, there are still necessary tasks that could require going into an office. That is entirely dependent on how GW operates though. Different work places have different protocol, but based on the "hire for attitude" attitude GW has, they probably want you to go in. Yeah, there are two questions that I'd've preferred the advert to have at least touched on before I'd consider applying - some idea of salary, even if only presented as a range rather than a specific figure, and some idea of whether WFH during the current situation is a thing, as long as you'd be willing to consider moving to Nottingham (or commuting, I guess) once the world calms down.

Heck, if they'd send me the rules for ork or DG releases, I'd do it free of charge, in my free time and sign whatever NDA they require of me. Investing a couple of hours a year surely beats having to live with printed brain-farts for a half a year or more.

As a job I'm actually qualified for I had a quick look at the advert. I think they need a copywriter to check their adverts. Look, I get that a frustrating number of adverts nowadays don't include a salary but some kind of salary range would at least help save you some time. GW historically pays very low wages. For jobs like this you really do get what you pay for. It's a technical role where experience really matters and enthusiasm only gets you so far.
For all the complaints about the quality of GW's written material, I don't think this role is what they really need. A technical writer/editor is what they should be hiring, which is a different thing altogether. A copy editor literally just checks to make sure the words are spelled correctly and make sense and conform to house style, while also providing guidance and suggestions to the writer on improvements for clarity or ease of reading. None of that helps with GW's main problem, which remains their inconsistent/undefined terminology and vague language. It may be this new role's job also encompasses that, but the advert implies otherwise.

Sadly I too can't move there. I also don't have a BA in Barista Studies. However, I think that hiring an editor is actually kind of a waste. I am a big proponent of Linus's Law, Codex rules should be released publicly as a beta and allow for crowdsourced proofreading.
