Ok so I'm resolved to build some rough riders for my IG. But I think that horse cavalry are pretty ridiculous in an army that carries laser weapons. I've seen a few neat ideas for rough riders like alien cavalry (ala star wars) or bikers (ala mad max or the conversion clinic). I've even thought jetpacks or jetbikes. However, nothing is really sticking yet and I hope ya'll throw a few ideas or concept art pix at me. I want something that looks futuristic and somewhat primitive. I'd also like to hear what ideas people have had for their hunting lances...

The Cadian ones look better with some Kislev legs a la the GW France website tutorial. They clipped the boots off and attached boots cut from plastic Cadian legs. Looks great and avoids all that pesky fur.

I don't suppose anyone has any info on good non-Space Marine bikes that would be suitable for Elysian Rough Riders?

That's a VOID bike. Not sure if they're still in production or what have you.

I've often toyed with the idea of trying to use the robot dog that comes with the Inquisitor model "Security Enforcer Barbaretta" as a rough rider mount.  I haven't seen the model in person, but since its scaled for Inquisitor it might be big enough for a 40k model to ride...

@ serpine. The INQ scale enforcer hound is big enough... never thought about using as a mount though. That's the out of the box thinking I'm talking about.

@ malfred. nice bike and yes, Kendoka's rough riders are sweet. Now if I just knew where he got the base model.

why not try to use ork bikes?
Its imperial enough with the tracks and not ramshackle like ork rides.
Just undo the shootaz and replace them with the pikes.

At the end of the documentary "Trinity and Beyond" there is a really cool scene with chinese cavalry riding towards a rising mushroom cloud. It has a very strong "Death Korps of Krieg" feeling to it. Some blurry screen shots: , Bretonia horses could look the part, with custom build gas masks and their caparisons painted in camouflage patterns.

As I stride knee deep through the dead, all is clear. I know what must be done...

wow kid kyoto i wish i knew about those west wind models before i bought everything i am useing for my rough rider models . i saw that the one store by me was discounting the old IG heavey weapon blisters . so i bought what they had left . some were tallarn , catachan ,& cadian . i am taking the frames sawing off the axles , using the legs & tires . i make a lower frame out of a piece of plastic I beam for the back tire . i take small aluminum tubing to make the front forks& steel wire for handlebars . the aluminum tubing & plastic I beam you can get from model railroad type hobby stores . so to some up buying those west wind models would save me alot of work . i only have one 75% built . but thats my rough rider conversion idea for what its worth . also for a more futuristic feel i am using parts from crisis suit guns to make the engines.

I saw once in a Necromunda Magazine that use to come out years ago, that this one guy used:

1:35 scale BMW motorcycles for his gang, Im sure you could use 'em for IG

What about something like the Green Goblin? Like his sky sled thing? Drop troops on that would be kinda
cool. You could always use the Dark Eldar things?

Ogre Sabertusks are sized right and only $5 each.

The Velociraptor set is scaled right, I've seen it done, and not too bad on price.  $14.00 for six of them.

I've seen the Reaper Exarch with both weapon options and both look like things you can buy in sex shops. A weapon should not look like this, not even a Emperor's Children weapon. -Symbio Joe

The perfect bikes for IG are the old lead bikes for the space marines. I wish I had more than just 1 left! They are much smaller and have a more gothic feel to them as well. Availability is a problem of course. Same pros and cons with the old Jet bikes.

Another thing you could do is to make your rough riders completely mechanical. I recently created some gun servitors that are completely robotic spider-like things. You could do the same type of simple conversion except that instead of a heavy bolter, you could use a hunting lance. Or, you could actually model them up as just explosive packing robots like the cyclops since they are pretty much one hit wonders anyways. I know you don't want horses, but I used the WHFB Gryphon riders and just attached some IG goodies like lasguns, backpacks, and such to them. I think they turned out allright. The servitors and rough riders are at the beginning of this album.

http://ghostpics.spaces.msn.com/PersonalSpace.aspx?_c01_photoalbum=showdefault&_c=photoalbum

For the lance itself I figure anything can be made explosive, but I have seen people use grenades glued to the end just below the tip. Or, the more traditional method is to simply make the thing look like a power weapon at the tip like the GW models.

Actually, for rough riders, Griffen and Augustus used some kind of beast in their
Afriel Strain army. I don't remember which model it was.

To be honest i don't like RR on Hellions. At one moment i tought that it was a good idea and i went for it ... but

Here's another picture of RR on Ork Bikes:

Those guys are sweet zubor!  I'm sweeping all of my stupid Gryphon legion riders into the trash right now since the ork player in our club has long since given up on his bikes.  I should be able to get ahold of those...mwahahaha!

I'm looking at doing some converted rough riders of my own as well, based on Space Marine bikes. But I'm probably going to do some narrowed front wheels, and a number of other changes to make it seem less SM and more IG.

Oh, and thank you all VERY much for this thread, I hate you ALL!

I have two boxes of space marine bikes on the way, just for this conversion, and I have a feeling they will be pretty involved conversions.

The big question now, what to use in place of the explosive tipped lance?

Those Ork bikes are pretty frickin' wicked man. I didn't realise that they had the ork rider's legs on there too. That might just sway me from purchasing the space marine bikes.

Orks are like those neighbor children who aren't invited to your parties and they come right in anyway.

One of my wacky ideas I'll likely never do is to make IG Rough Rider mounts out of spare Tyranid parts and some shells so as to look like they're riding giant hermit crabs...

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.
Play the games that make you happy.
