OK - some iphone final pics of the IW tanks. One rusty, one pristine. Happy with both, the Hazard Stripes are fun to paint, and when they work, they are striking on the table. Next project is some greenstuff work - some new stuff, and returning to some old stuff (I HAVE To return to the Alpha Legion Tank).

As always, comments and criticisms always appreciated.

Wow, loving everything in this blog so far, but especially so with the Iron Warriors! They're looking really really great!

Also, I quite like the posters all over the buildings, adds a lot to the realism. The weathering on that first building is absoutely phenomenal as well!

Ah - fellow Aussies (edits are after visiting your pages)

Thanks JB - Im all over the place with what I work on (the Hobby ADD which is so common in 40K) - the Iron Warriors were fun to paint though, and Im keen to hit up a small squad (Im waiting for a delivery of 2mm hobby masking tape - the tank uses 6mm). The buildings were good fun too - after 2 or three, its time for something else!
(Also - LOVE the wordbearers. Im onto the final book of the A Reynolds WB Omnibus - and your models capture this feeling exceptionally well).

Thanks TS the 'Dave Taylor Method' (which kinda sounds like a band name) is very easy to follow & will be rolling it out to my other vehicles. Im still considering the best colours - but I figure these do not need necessarily need to be standard (it IS chaos)!.
(Also - love the fallout themed stuff, very characterful, very 'true to the feel of the game')!

Ok - apologies for the bad pics - this is a test model Im workin on for traitor guard snipers. Didnt like the ratling sniper models, and felt like a GS Challenge

OK - so making some snipers out of lasguns and chaos spike railings:

And the hooded heads:

I'll keep working on the test model - depending on how it turns out (painted up), I might do a sniper squad.

Comments and criticisms always welcome.

Thanks GiraffeX - appreciate the kind words. I will be continuing with the Iron Warriors (I want at least a squad of them) as soon as I get my 2 mm hobby masking tape in the mail

AHHHH! Typed a big post, only to have the PC die on me and lose all of the wit and wisdom I imparted. Consider that a permanent loss to humanity, I cant replicate gold like that.

Anyway - worked on the sniper:

Scale Armour like my Alpha Legion Warriors:

Sniper rifle set up:

Sniper with cloak:

Basecoated my Trial Iron Warrior - if this guy works well, I will be working on a small squad:

Anyway, going to work on a the banding - I havent made my life easy, by wanting to V-shaped and not Diagonal lines:
Diagonal -
V-shaped -

Finally, i did an audit of the unpainted models - not including tanks, non-CSM models and unassembled models - I have at least 200 CSM to field:

I have some work to do!

Comments welcome.

Hi Guys, a quick update:

Finally, more work on the Alpha legion 'spikeless' rhino! Been a year+... but I ripped off the GS work I had previously done, and went with a thicker plasticard rod. The GS would have taken me months, the plasticard rod took a couple of hours tops.

Im also changing an old Black Legion Rhino (my very first painted model) into an Iron Warrior Rhino - this is a few shots of the symbol I hope to freehand (after tracing) onto the top:

From a Troop perspective - workin on the Alpha Legion Traitor Guard Sniper - this is a test model, if it works well enough (and I like it!) then I will do 10 of these for a full sniper squad.

And this is the first bit of work Ive done on the IW troop - next time, less hazard striping!!!

So, Ive been busy Cheers

OK - I did an hour or so of painting last night, and got my Iron Warriors symbol to a state I am happy with. I am enjoying working on the freehand symbols, its really satisfying to get a result. Anyway, comments and suggestions always welcome

This is the original that I traced ()

And this is the result:

(the same pic, with glare - I included it cos it shows the metal colour of the painting better).

More Updates!!!! (Riding the wave of enthusiasm that 6th Edition created)

Ok, with the exception of the Base 9which needs a wash, and dry brushing - possibly some static grass) this Test model is finished. Overall Im happy with the results, with a few lessons for the next one. First the pics:

Facing Forward:

Very happy with how the eyes went (getting an extreme fine detail brush made all the difference) & generally happy with the sniper rifle. My improvement on the next model will be to increase the length of the scope - it looks a little short on the finished product. I will also do the work on the 'face covering scarf' BEFORE putting on the hood - I found it difficult to work with the scarf when the hood was on first. I may also look to increasing the size of the hood... maybe. Thoughts?

Side One:

Again, pretty happy, like how the lasgun end converted to the sniper scope well - and happy enough with my lens paint job (still improving on that). Freehand on the cloak was a little cramped, but I think its still effective.

Side two (over shoulder):

Good shot of the scale amour (which I like ), & the scope lens from the other end (again, happy with my progress here). The Alpha Hydra was freehand, and seems to have worked well.

Things I need to improve on? - the cloak was good, but needs to be smoother, and have more natural 'folds etc'. This is more a matter of me triallilng new greenstuff techniques & just getting better at it. The paint job on the uniform and the cloak needs more contrast to really make it 'pop', and now Im looking at it, the mould lines on the boots are annoying me now.

Comments and suggestions always welcome

Howdy folks - a quick update from Friday night's painting:

A WIP Iron Warrior - this guy is my first test model.

Ok - liking this so far, the look is quite striking on the tabletop, and once you get the masking tape down its not too hard to achieve a nice result.

As a test model, I put plenty of hazard stripes on this guy (too many really). My thoughts are that for future models to reduce this to maybe half the number of spots... perhaps hitting the pauldron + one weapon, or leg + backpack... im sure any decisions will be dictated by what is easiest! This guy still has some finishing to do - but overall Im happy.

Comments or criticisms welcome

Tragedy & Opportunity.

On the weekend, this guy (the General):

Failed a difficult terrain test (fell off a shelf). Unfortunately, the standard Demon Prince Invulnerable Save was not sufficient to save the General, resulting in:

The DP was cast back into the warp.

However, as an immortal Demon Prince, the General has sworn to return & wreak havoc on the materium, under showing his new allegiance to the Iron Warriors Legion, and sporting all new gifts from the Gods of Chaos:

Wow, its almost a year since I did any painting. My only 40k has been the books etc... anyway, cleaning up the spare room getting ready for baby no 2 made me pick up the brush again. So, additional work and weathering on the irong warrior test model.

Unfortunately some of the pics turned out a little blurry - I will take some better ones with a proper camera once I have finished the base.

As always, happy to hear comments, advice or criticisms

Cheers

More iron warrior stuff - I ended up putting weathering on the Vindicator (It just looked unfinished next to the predator) and started doing a chaos star on the Rhino.

It has been a long time since you painted him, but man, did that sniper impress me! It looks beautiful, stunning really!

The amount of details you added, the freehand, the colors, awesome job!

The Vindicator looks damn good, just like the first weathered Iron Warrior

Keep it up!

G'day

Just a little more work getting done on a Rhino Im repainting. This Rhino was literally the first model I ever put paint to - and it shows!

This is dusty as hell, and Im reasonably sure that the black paint was just an undercoat (with a small amount of touchups).

As Im moving away from the Black Legion towards the Iron Warriors, Ive done some work on this tank now (some of this was shown earlier):

So, put on the free-hand details, blocking out the yellow for the hazard stripes etc.

Ive left the 'dry-brushing' of the metal pretty rough at this stage, as this will get hit with weathering as well, and I want some of this roughness to show through.

This week I hope to have the masking tape all done to put on the black layer.

Cheers

Long time between posts! Thats just how I roll.

Didnt do the masking tape this time - just tried to freehand the lines (to gradually improve my freehand skills).

Cheers

Finally finished it! Need to seal the tank, knock the brightness off the rust colour.
