Busy busy busy!~
Time is short and its crunch time, so here is a quick update on painting progress!

Update the first part: THE DOOR!

Did a quick bit of freehand/decal work on the bridge door, then weathered it down a bit.

Speaking of the head, I took care of the remaining details:

I figured out the gold as well. Took a little experimentation on the fly, but I think it's working out pretty well. The top bit is after the first wash of Strong Tone, the bottom is what happens with a wash of Soft Tone after that.

I actually went another layer of Strong Tone after this, and the result is a rather nice and rich bronzey color... Like this!

Last bit of update:
Putting gold on the metal bitz in preparation for spraying them with an ink wash.

So yeah!!
PAINTING!!!

Gold is looking really nice, just about the right level of dirty. That cockpit is next level stuff, really stunning.

Looking great!

When I saw the guns, my first thought was, "Are those REAL?".

Ramos must mean Army Painter Strong Tone and Soft Tone from their Warpaint Inks line:

(Pic stolen from this blog's review of the three: http://anatolisgameroom.blogspot.com/2012/08/army-painter-warpaints-inks-review.html)

These are brilliant inks/washes that are the same or better than the old GeeDub washes that revolutionized painting for a lot of people. And IMO far superior to the current Citadel stuff.

Dark = Badab Black
Strong = Devlan Mud
Soft = Gryphonne Sepia(-ish)

I use Dark Tone constantly, the stuff is delicious, well priced, and the dropper bottle means you don't get to experience the existential crisis of spilling a brand new bottle of $$$ Dub wash. Which maybe some people are all about

What makes them better? Just the fact that they're in dropper bottles?

Can't you get them in large buckets as well so you can just dunk the whole thing! Lots of people rave about them but I have not tried them yet. Make my own now. Much cheaper. The results here obviously say they are very good.

You don't say? As an ink, do you have to water them down to create a wash? Or can you apply them direct like the old GW washes?

Boss has it exactly right. Army painter washes!

The dropper bottles make it more convenient than the GW ones and more importantly they are a damn near exact match to the old GW washes. I was particularly excited to learn of the Devlan Mud equivalent, Strong Tone, because I put that crap on EVERYTHING! This gold effect is one of my biggest uses of the product, and I've not been able to replicate it with any other paints after GW swapped to the new grossness.

Plus, there is the added fact that these things are like 3 bucks and change for a bottle, compared to the 4-5 that GW charge, and you get MORE!

@Cam: You can get big tins of the quickshade, and the colors are more or less what these are. The paint is completely different, though, as the bottles are acrylic wash, whereas the tins are closer to a polyurethane "dip". It's a thick gloss varnish base with pigment in it.
Im not a big fan of dipping, but I've seen it done to an ok degree. Certainly makes things quicker... I'll just stick with these more traditional washes.

@wyfox: Even though these say "ink", they are more like the old GW washes in consistency and color. Just slap em on as you would any other

Mostly, on my phone.

I would avoid the tinned stuff generally though I've used it for terrain. Acts as a sealant, also.

Also @ Ramos that looks darn snazzy. And love the screens

So much Goooooooold~~~

At this stage, I have about half of the armor plates done. Minor touch-ups here and there where I was a little too overzealous with the trim colors, but after the edge highlight they are DONE!!

On the metal side of things, I did some !!!SCIENCE!!!, and experimented with the concept of spraying the whole thing down with an ink wash...

Results are... eh... Inconclusive, but I dont think I have time to experiment more.
Overall, the tint that I get is nice and certain recesses get shaded well, but I keep getting a slight white haze where the wash pools. I guess its from the varnish drying funny or something, I dunno... You can see it underneath the doors- a fine white line.

I think Ill just go like how I did the Warhound and hit it with a few shades out of the airbrush. I still have the Minitaire ghost tints floating around here somewhere...

3 weeks to go before due date...

Yikes.

The white is actually the water/varnish pooling and drying on top of the pigment. I've had the same happen when adding water to washes, the water takes longer to dry than the wash floats on top and leaves it white

Those white plates are AMAZEBALLS. They look so soft and satiny, like there's real depth there.

@Rolsheen: That's what that is?? Fascinating... I wonder if adding something to speed the drying (alcohol?) might help...?
In any case, that's awesome to know! Wish I had some more time to play with my wash spray idea more... Maybe after AC!

@SL: I can run this during the KNight Fight, right?

@Gits: Thank you!!

@Shrapnelsmile: There is a certain quaintness about the old kit... I seem to always end up using them for color tests or fodder for my Orks... Really a versatile old kit!

@Lorek: Heh, thanks. As much of a pain as the white is to paint, I really love how it's been turning out! Just wait till she's all together!

=============

So a minor break from gold to do some heavy airbrushing!
I got in to the metal areas and hit them with a few inks and shades to give the metal an oily appearance, especially on the pistons.

I then went ahead and sprayed the head!
