The thing with the Assault Company Captain is... He just looks far too similar to Korvydae from Forgeworld, except with a rubbish weapon and an oversized Iron Halo.

Since I've got Korvydae already (and given him a Helmet), that guy basically means this new set is a 'nogo' to me. At GW's finecast prices (We're likely talking £45-£50, like the 'White Council' set), 1/4 being not useful at all, really just is not a viable purchase.

I can't say that I'm really sold on any of those.
The Master of the Marches looks more like an Adeptus Terra scribe in power armour than a Company Master with the scroll and speakers.
The Lord Executioner isn't bad, but I was hoping for a more ornate axe, and a ceremonial helm (or something that obscured his features) like an actual executioner. The pose as well, while suiting the premise of the role, seems at odds with the jump pack.
Master of Ceremonies, again, looks more like a scribe than an Astartes. It's a great concept that looks well for a diorama but looks out of place on a gaming table. It also doesn't know if it wants to be a Chaplain or a Company Master.
Master of Relics looks like a Veteran Sergeant rather than a Company Master. I get that fluff wise plasma weapons are ancient and revered technology, but when plasma weapons are becoming more popular for squads and characters it loses a lot of its effect. Had it been a weapon from the Heresy, or the like, then it would have been much more impressive.

Don't really like the Master of the Marches- kinda stupid having those two great big speakers on the back to relay orders on the battlefield. That's what their helmet vox-comms are for! Idiots.

Not in an army where every CO and NCO has lost his helmet

So true! I wondered why they take the helmet off of every SGT and zero. They are so damn difficult to put back on.

Why did they need to release these? Don't they still have the chapter masters set that I have never seen anyone buy? How many masters can be in each chapter? There only are a thousand Marines in the army and it seems like like every 4th guy is master of something. I know what I'd be the master of, Bater. Sorry, its early and I hate work...

A space Marine chapter has 10 companies of 100 Space Marines each. Each company is presided over by captain. These captains have official titles and responsibilities associated with them.

The 10th company has your scout squads and is lead by the Master of the Recruits.

The 9th company has the bulk of your Devastator marines, and is lead by the Master of Relics.

And so on.

The bolded bit got my thinking, how would these guys do with a black paint job and possible weapon swap to something more crozius-like? Maybe a skull-helmet? They may be a little "meh" as captains, but they might make better chaplains...

I don't think the sculpts really are that bad- at least no worse than the over-decorated junk GW has been pumping out for SM for years. Lemartes has become the new normal.

Actually, I kinda like the Master of Marches and Master of Relics.

What I dislike is attaching game mechanics to them. I'm of the opinion that models to represent an army's administrators is great- but combat-wise those administrators don't have to be any different from any other soldier on the field. Take the master of marches for example. The guy who administers the chapter fighting strength doesn't need to be any different in battle than any other equivalently-ranked character. And just because he's physically present on the battlefield doesn't mean his soldiers are going to fight any differently than if he's up on an orbiting spacecraft.

EDIT: What I would rather have seen is what I can picture GW of the 3rd edition years doing: Release these models (or even better, a set of conversion bits to turn regular SM characters into these high-ranking administrators) together with a "How to paint Space Marines" that gives the heraldry for each position, as well as information about how different chapters might fill these roles differently. In other words, these sorts of characters should be there to spur modelling creativity, not to build army lists. Now of course, without rules that give bonuses, players wouldn't need to buy these kits, and that flies in the face of everything GW is about. They would have to sell the conversion kits on the basis of how good the models look, and that's a risk it seems GW isn't willing to take any more.

Are you familiar with the Master of the Chapter datasheet from the old Apocalypse rules? They'd only be "different in battle than any other equivalently-ranked character" in an apocalypse game. For your standard game, you'd just use him as a chapter captain or chapter master with the wargear shown.

I understand that. And I've edited my post to make my point more clear. While I won't go so far as to say models like this stifle players' creativity, they don't do as much to inspire as they could.

The Master of Marches might be a decent base for an Inquisitor conversion too. Just change the torso and head to something less typically Astartes and it looks like he is passing judgement on a heretic
