Cheers! Hooray, 5 pages!

My reds are basically a base of Mechrite Red (don't know what the new version is), then I mix in a Vallejo light grey in increasing amounts to highlight without going pink, hit it with a black or brown wash (black for hard lines like Infinity, brown for smoother stuff like the BA earlier in the thread), and then do one or two more layers depending on the tone after the wash. I'm afraid that's not much of a recipie, but beyond paint names I tend to do most of my highlighting by eye. Very unprofessional, I know.

Should be some updates incoming soon, of a Deadzoney nature. Well, Deadzone-Infinity crossover...

OK, I have to ask: I’m not familiar with the game, but the chick with the short skirt seems a little out of place among the otherwise gritty future soldiers. Well painted, but a lot of WTF?

Long story short, she's an undercover secret agent/bodyguard, a James Bond type character, so is in civvies rather than military gear. I agree she looks somewhat out of place, but she's more a scenario/campaign-specific mini rather than a general part of the army.

She's ostensibly on the PanOceanian side (the blue guys), but their ops are blowing her cover, so she basically runs round shooting everyone in one mission.

The mini is dressed alot like the Civvie from the flee or die Dire Foes box. My guess is that the mini can represent a 'hostile' civvie in a regular game, while the Dire Foes civvie can represent a normal one. That is how I intend to use them.

Nice work on the Icestorm minis. Eventually I will paint mine.

I really like the look of your Infinity stuff. Yours is the first I've seen with those kind of muted colors. I think it's fantastic!

Forgive me now! Tomorrow I may no longer feel guilty...

Ha, it's on it way soon, with some finished Deadzone and some Legoin of the Damned WIPs. My laptop's out of action at the moment and I can't transfer pics directly to my tablet, so I have to do it from the desktop which I haven't got to in a while. Should be tomorrow, if I find time between marathonning LotR!

Haha, no, I'm not quite that mad... Well, at least until next year when I have the extended versions of all 6 and can do them all in one epic 19+ hour slog!

And now, the Update, now available in Deadzone...

First off, possibly my favourite DZ minis (it's between this guy, the Enforcer Sniper and the Plague G1), The limited-edition pre-release version of the Survivor:

The paintjob is somewhat inspired by Boba Fett's armour, the visor is an early attempt at Halo-stlye visors. Not too successful, but decent enough, I think.

Next, some Rebs, painted to sort-of fit in with my Nomads should I need a few more orders/combi-rifles!

Not as sharp at the Infinity stuff, of course, but they pass the 2 feet test well enough, and were at least painted quite quickly. The mask on the Sniper was basically an attempt to rescue the face; I don't know whether it's a miscast or just the scuplt, but I found her face fairly flat (her nose was all but non-existant) so figured the best way to add a bit of character was a mask. It fits the style of the Rebs, I think, and looks pretty cool.

On a side note, the LotR-athon has got me wanting to dig out, fix up and show off some of my many LotR minis, would any of you folks be interested in seeing them here?

That's all, cheers for the continued support/motivation/nagging me to get something done!

Mask works. Good work overall, keep them coming

I think I'm gonna do something similar with my rebs, keep them similarly colored to my QK/nomads.

Cheers GD!

Dug out a good 20+ LotR character minis in salvagable condition earlier, so expect some trips to Middle Earth on here in the updates to come. The only question is where to start, so any suggestions? If it's a significant character in the movies I probably have it, so any suggestions welcome (apart from the Fellowship, I have them all done already).

Umm... Do the chick from the horse-dudes that killed that wraith king dude with a sword. At least in the movie, i wouldn't know about the book there was too much time spent describing furniture and food lol.

Ok, two votes for Rohan then. I have Eowyn (henceforth known as 'horse-dude chick ) and the Witch King, along with Merry (the hobbit who was also there), so I might paint those three up and do some kind of diorama base, maybe with a dead Theoden as well...

And the plan is a go! The three involved minis are now assembled, so tomorrow I'll be having a little bit of a play with posing/setting the piece and get to work painting.

I've also spotted a few more matched sets of minis that could be diorama-worthy, so I may end up doing a few more of these eventually.

I think this is what is going to happen to a lot of my reaper bones minis (when they arrive), little 2-5 model dioramas. Please continue to blaze the trail such that I might leisurely follow.

Rebs look cool. Should fit in very nicely with your nomads. Or even as nomad bounty hunters.

Looking forward to the diorama. What other LotR stuff do you have?

Erm... probably too much... There was a magazine that ran a few years ago with minis in every issue (and insanely cheap compared to today's prices), and over 90-odd issues of that and some supplemental purchaes I've managed to get at least 1 version of every major character, small armies for most factions in the game and larger armies for the main players (I have a ton of Gondor and quite a bit of Mordor and Rohan). Some of it is in a severe state of disrepair, or painted terribly by my 8-year-old self, and one day I plan to fix it all up.

Was there anything in particlar you wanted to see?

Diorama progress update: Eowyn is done barring the base, Witch King is mostly done (well, as done as a model that is 100% black or silver ever can be) and the wash is drying on Merry. Milliput layer 1 is drying on the base, that will need at least one more layer of that/GS before painting can start.

That magazine was amazing and was how I got into wargames. However then I got out of them for years until my mid twenties.

I actually have a Balin's Tomb display base mostly painted up with the Fellowship all done, it's a very solid chunk of resin that I can't quite recall how I got (might have been a free gift with the magazine subscription). All I need to do is paint the rim at some point, so I can try and snap some pics of the almost-complete display over the next few days.

And 'tis done! Pics below, but first, to set the scene...

"Begone, foul Dwimmerlake, Lord of Carrion! Leave the dead in peace!"
A cold voice answered: "Come not between the Nazgul and his prey! Or he will not slay thee in thy turn. He will bear thee away to the houses of lamentation, beyond all darkness, where thy flesh shall be devoured, and thy shrivelled mind be left naked to the Lidless Eye."
A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will, but I will hinder it, if I may."
"Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!"
Then Merry heard of all sounds in that hour the strangest. It seemed Dernhelm laughed, and the clear voice was like the ring of steel. "But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. I am Eowyn, Eomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will kill you if you touch him!"

From Return of the King, J.R.R. Tolkien

There we go. The completed diorama, inspired by the passage above and its corresponding scne in the movie (and for the purist out there, yes, they are in slightly the wrong places and no, that is no actually Theoden under the horse! It's artistic liscence! ). The base is an upturned coffee mat, layered with milliput and Green Stuff to add some texture and then painted and covered with a mix of flock, grit and sand. Each mini is also removable for use in-game.

Eowyn:

Merry:

The Witch King of Angmar, Sauron's chiefest lieutenant and lord of the Nazgul:

Finally, some scale shots with SM just so those of you unfamilliar with the minis can see how detailed and tiny they are (seriously, in terms of being fiddly, Infinity got nothing on true-28mm hobbits!). Also a teaser of what will be up next as/when I get some more LotR stuff done.

That's all of it (bar a few other angles you can see in my gallery). Overall, I'm pretty happy with it; it was fun to put together, captures one of my favourite scenes in anything ever, and looks pretty good on the shelf. This is probably the most elaborate diorama I've done (that's not saying an awful lot, though), but already I'm thinking of ways to top it. Not exactly sure what the next one will be, but at the moment I'm weighing up:

The scene where Merry and Pippin escape into Fangorn Forest while Eomer and his riders attack the Orcs/Uruks that held them captive
OR
The big one, the death of Sauron. I have the Dark Lord himself, a dead Elendil and an Isildur with the broken blade, so that won't need much converting, but I'm thinking of going big and having a whole battle playing out around them.
OR
Something in Osgilliath, with Faramir and some Rangers/Warriors holding the city. I have an Orc barge I built years ago that could fit in with this too.

As ever, any comments are more than welcome, let me know what you think of it and if you have any ideas for other scenes, I just might be able to do them. I'll also dust of my Balin's tomb diorama and photograph that at some point soon as well.

I say anything in Osgilliath. Lots of possibility with the Orcs amphibious assault, defensive positions, ect. Also your diorama is nicely done. Im digging that Chaos marine. Im always partial to 40k stuff.

Cheers! I'm leaning more toward Osgiliath, I think, as the terrain will be somewhat easier to build (ruins vs trees).

Actually, it's a Legion of the Damned marine, not Chaos, but thanks anyway! Hopefully the paintscheme will make it a bit more recognisable!

Fantastic diorama there.

Osgilliath for me too. Great if you can get some good poses of models in melee combat. A few getting hit with arrows etc. Real action shot.

Yep, I like it. The dead horse really sells it and makes it feel more like a display piece, and there wasn't much else in terms of scenery you could use so good idea .
