I left the hobby for a bit due to college and moving quite recently, and am really ready to begin again. When I left AoS was just coming out and I certainly have no interest in the game personally. And I was hoping people could help:

Would anyone be willing to help point me towards some good places to buy armies of Fantasy (or Historical) 28mm models that could fit with GW's figures (I'm looking for places from which I can buy a full army, not just collections of monsters or skirmish games like Mierce or Bushido. More like Wargods of Aegyptus or Mantic's Kings of War.

So long as it's roughly the same scale and isn't modern or Sci-fi it's good to me

Or if there's already a topic dedicated to this, can someone direct me towards it, I saw a couple of topics talking about counts-as in the Mantic forum.

Thanks enormously

Murdock

There's any number of historical ranges that have "realistic" figures suitable for the various human factions in AoS. These would include mediaeval knights, renaissance and even lace wars era troops and cannons.

There are various historical human armies such as New Kingdom Egyptians, Aztecs, Incas, Tupi Indians and the like, that have more of a fantastical appearance compared to the European type stuff.

If you're prepared to proxy or "couts as", there isn't much you can't do.

If you need some large monsters they can be got from toy ranges such as the Papo dinosaurs, or Schleich zoo animals.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I find this site great for keeping track of any new ranges of fantasy style models from smaller model companies and if you check the News and Rumour Section you'll see the odd thread promoting a new line of models or kickstarter along these lines!

If you're looking for some good alternative fantasy ranges (although I base this more from a Dwarf perspective!) you should try taking a look at Titanforge and Scibor's models; Scibor produce some lovely models that might capture your imagination. I recently saw some nice looking Spartan style Dwarfs by Momma Miniatures!

There's also this interesting looking kickstarter with pirate themes models: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/firelockgames/blood-and-plunder
I've never gone in on a kickstarter but it might be something that appeals too.

Warlord Games are also definitely worth a look and cover the historical element of what you are interested in. I got some of the Roman Legionaries a few years ago as part of a project that was shelved and they don't exactly match the scale and style of the GW range but are nice looking as ranked up troops and I believe are popular in the Kings of War community.

Definitely have a look at Avatars of War. There are characters and units there.

Also, Gamezone has a strong range of groovy minis that fit in well with GW's lineup.

There are a number of other ranges that can get you nice individual monsters. Some that target the "not GW" crowd include Crature Caster and Ultraforge. There are even a decent number of them from Reaper's Bones lineup.

This link is to a post I made in response to a request for alternate Bretonnian and Empire knights. it has links to Perry Miniatures and Fireforge games, both makers of historical miniatures, both metal and plastic.

Another suitable historical company, Gripping Beast.

For fantasy: Mantic Miniatures. You can also download their Kings of War rules and army lists for free, and give the game a try.

Reaper has been brought up, but their Warlord range looks promising.

These guys are somewhat new to the scene, but I just got some stuff from them for AoS and it's excellent stuff.
