Happy new year Dakka dakka brothers and sisters.

I have decided that for 2025 I'd start fresh... with a new thread.
My old Red Corsairs thread was started almost 15 years ago!
Reading it today is very difficult as almost all the pics are held for ransom by photobucket.
I am too old and have no patience anymore to go through and fix every photo.

Last year a bunch of old gaming buddies created a group chat ... and they got me really pumped up to paint and play again! They are starting off by making 1000pt lists. Get them fully painted and play a few times a month. Their updates and pics are really motivational.
Soo I figured if I started posting here as well I can get more motivated!!

I am really excited aboot the new Chaos codex and the Renegade Raiders fit the Red Corsairs perfectly. So I need to build a 1000pt list

Over the summer, I got an Anycubic Photon Mono 4k and I started 3D printing minis.
I have been trying to print a set of biker STLs I bought, but I have been having issues with the scale. Printed at 100% the biker is huge. Almost as big as a Termi in the sitting position. A lot larger than the original CSM biker

I'm gonna have to do some maths to figure out the scale

Are CSM bigger now?

83.33% I measured a CSM and that's the scale I got.

I went ahead and printed a bunch. On the left is 100% the right is 83.33%

I don't like it. I think it's too small. Furthermore, I want to put CSM bits like helmets and shoulder pad. When I do, they don't fit and are just a little too big.

So I put the models in Blender and compared to other models. OG CSM are short. But this biker is way too big. He is 40mm in the sitting position.

So I am going to try 90% and see if they fit.

So glad to see some Dakka old school on here. I have recently returned too, and it's great to find people are still using forums in the era of short form social media.

Love the blog! As a Badab War fan myself, I love to see the Corsairs and the Tiger Claws represented here. Can I ask - the power maul guy in the Huron's Wolves - is that Lemmy Kilmeister?!

Your 3D prints really shine a light on the dramatic scale creep on all SME models! I'm using old plastic CSM and plague marines in my Death Guard blog and they're noticeably smaller than the models released ten years ago, and smaller again compared to models released recently!

If you want a real laugh, compare the scale of terminators changing!

Thanks for replying, Tek. I pretty much gave up on this forum, but I just saw your post. I guess you are right, forums are dead. Furthermore, I was hoping to get motivation to work on my army from here, So far you're it and thanks for that
I've been painting this same army on and off for over 15 years… It's kinda crazy if you think aboot it. Occasionally I need to do something different, and that's where the Tiger claws came in. I have a tendency to start stuff and not finish, I sometimes need that push.

 Tek wrote:

Is that what's going on? It was driving me nuts! They look stupid next to my old CSM.
I ended up scaling them by 90% and it's not bad. I didn't like the helmet that came with the model, I found the old CSM helmet and shoulder pads so it will fit in with the rest of my army.

I'm still pretty new at resin printing and I bought some cheap resin and I kept having issues with it. I find It is very brittle, and I kept getting these lines

Cool Corsairs and Tigers! The red on that terminator is just lovely. The bikers original size really does show the recent scale creep. If the lines were just on the armour panel, I’d say they look cool and keep them, but the rest does distract. Good luck finding a cure for it

Looking on the internets say it could be an issue with the Z rod wobble. Some say a cleaning and greasing may help. So I did that.

Thanks Ragsta, Im glad this forum is not dead, ive been on and off here for a long time. I got a little discouraged. In the olden days you'd get alot of replies and help when needed.

Anyhoo, I did some more research and there's an antialiasing option that fixed the lines

Hell yeah, that bike looks rad! 3D printing looks like a lot of work but when you get it dialed in, the results are amazing. Love the Lemmy. Can I request an Ozzy and maybe even a Rob Halford? Cheeky 80s rock stars as unit leaders would be such an ace detail.

I hear ya re: the forums. A few years back a blog would get a ton of replies in between posts. It's definitely fewer these days, but the quality is still there. There's a good band of regulars on here which is just so refreshing to see. Feth instagram, feth facebook. I'm forums 'til I die!

Loving seeing your updates, Styro. Long may they continue. If you keep posting, I'll keep replying <3

The bike design is really nice. I like that you've replaced parts of the rider with old school CSM bits. It makes the model look like it belongs in your army rather than like a mercenary who showed up from someone else's army.

The whole look of this army is very on brand with the Red Corsairs. They look like renegades from a variety of Chapters, but I appreciate that their variety comes from their paint schemes and not their armor. Also, even with the color variations, your units still look cohesive.

Great job. I hope there will be more.

Thanks Bud, I'll keep posting if you keep reading, lol. I don't do social media. Always loved forums. I like that you can go back and read your progress over the years. it's a shame that Photobucket hold my pics for ransom. My old thread was pretty big. But it's impossible to read now.
I am liking the 3d printing esp since the old bike models are garbage. but its hit or miss with these resins. I went cheap and now I'm paying for it

Thanks for the feedback. I have been working on the same army for 15 years.. I have tried many things and different styles of painting. Chaos renegades never really had love sine the 3rd or 4th codex (not sure which) but now I can't wait to play. I want fast attacks i want in, and pew pew then run away. So I'm loving this new codex.can wait to get these 1000pts in and bust up my buddies Space Dwarves

It is funny how it's Old School CSM... I still think of it as new. My newest CSM are from the Dark Vengeance set, and even that is pretty old. I looked at the new kits and sure they look cool but their is no customizing and they look the same.

2 different tones of purple, a dark from the bottom (you can't tell in the photos) and a lighter Purple all around.

Cheers, yeah, I scoured the Internets looking for something different that stood out. Most of what I found were boring, or they looked like the old bikes.

Bear with me when it comes to updates. I only get aboot an hour or so after I put my daughter to bed to do anything for myself. Either it's printing, painting, taking photos or edit and posting them. It's not like it used to be when i had tons of free time.

I had a speed paint set I wanted to try for these bikers, I was hoping to do them quick and dirty. I did a test biker with a black primer and a white zenithal highlight. I painted on the speed paints with the brush that came with the set

I wasn't too happy with the results. I didn't like how the red turned out. I didn't like how bloby it got. When I tried to fix it, it would reactivate and it would get worse.

So thats where the purple primer and the yellow zenithal come in to play. I also used the red speed paint through the airbrush. Then I airbrushed a black to black out the non-red areas. I messed up a bit with the air brush but happy accidents I hope. My eyes aren't what they used to be.

I like how this red turned out alot better.

C&C are welcome

Thanks, this was my first attempt. I really like it. I find it more fun than plain black. Send me a link with examples of your Alpha Legion. I have been thinking of adding some alpha legion units gifted to Huron by Abaddon. Maybe I can pick your brain with lore and ideas

I did a bunch of gold tests. All my paints has dried up, and they don't exist anymore. So I had to start over. I didn't take pics of the tests, I did aboot 4 or 5 of them with different bases and washes, but this is what I landed on:
