Someone said I should post my Necron temple set here, so I thought I'd crosspost just the completed pictures here. The full project log is over here.
I'm compiling some of our "greatest hits" pieces into montage pictures for easy portfolio access, so I'll be dropping them here as well as I finish putting them together. It occurred to me that we have a lot of pictures that I've never shown here, so expect some new pieces as well.
And an old classic.
And another one, one my personal favorites that I'll be making a sequel to soon.
An urban set, one of many. Expect some big pictures of some new big urban projects soon.

Hiya Nerdfest, How's it going? I really appreciate the kind words from you and everyone else, it's inspiring and I make sure to pass them along to whatever grunts actually managed to get out of bed to help with my projects. There's an opportunity to grab a piece going right now, here's a pic of what we have available at this moment, a pump station that I assembled from scratch and spare parts by myself, it took a lot longer than expected because of all the pipes and weathering. Also you can always check my profile for current auctions.

All the figures I use for models are from my way-back early days in the hobby, before bases were all the rage. I had a half dozen unfinished armies, then started getting into scenery and terrain more and more with the hopes of building the greatest table ever, then over time GW released new models for just about everything I was working on... even harlequins! Oh well. Some of our later figures I started paying a little more attention to, like my Necrons:

That necron tower is truly epic.
The desert terrain is awesome, including some of the most realistic sand I've ever seen (I appreciate your effort to apparently scale down the granularity of sand to match the mini scale), but does that get hard to play on?
I like the thing bursting from the ground. The maggot-spewer isn't really my style, but it's undeniably an excellently modeled piece.
17349
Post by: SilverMK2
Looks like that ruined tower is surfing in the sand (in a good way ).
How much of the sand is actually part of the models/terrain, if I may ask?
23050
Post by: Terraformer
That's actually not sand,in fact no sand was used on these pieces. These pictures show two models with sand dunes sculpted and finished with various techniques to get the realistic appearance of sand. The photographs are not retouched or enhanced at all besides light adjustment, it just photographs realistically.

Any orange you see is just a lighting effect, the blood is all dark red like good blood should be. All stretched out it's 4' of terrain, or enough to stretch across a standard gaming table.

Thank you, the desert dunes were actually some of my personal favorites, and I can't wait to do more from that line. With a few surprises of course. It's actually a pretty straightforward process, just carved foam and polyfilla, painted with some highlighting and pigment powder. The actual hard part was getting a feel for how desert dunes look and behave. I spent a lot of time staring at pictures of desert scenery and learning about the behavior of sand dunes. I scrapped a few pieces in process that didn't have the right curve, etc.

I do have a lot of pieces that aren't here yet, in fact even our website doesn't quite have everything up and visible yet, but I do plan on showing it all as we get the time to go over our archive of pictures and pick the best ones, re-size and upload.
That said, there are a ton of pictures in our webpage gallery, as well as here on Dakka. For those asking about tutorials, I'm going to be releasing more DIYs in the future with very specific details about how to achieve certain effects. As well as project logs of some of the more grand pieces we're working on behind the scenes right now. We already have a pretty good handful of plogs on our site, be sure to check them out.
Oh, as for the posters and such, we just use a good quality photo printer and paper. Nothing too specialized, just good enough resolution to put a high res image into a small print.

The idea is that I'm modeling my Tyranids in a wasteland for a couple reasons:
1) the desert look really helps the carapace and skin to stand out, especially the purple.
2) I like the idea of my nids being in the last stages of consuming a world, where nearly all the vegetation is consumed, leaving behind barren rock and sand.

Do you have any advise that you can give the lesser terrain builders like myself to get us started? Thank you again for your amazing work.
Thank you so much, I always love to hear that the work we do inspires others, I feel there should be a lot more emphasis on the terrain aspect of this hobby! As for how to get started, I would say try to come up with some plans and ideas, and then don't be afraid to go the extra mile. Research by looking at art or getting reference pictures of the kind of terrain you want to make and spend the extra time to detail it how you want it to look. Put the same kind of effort that you would in painting your best figures. Many people skim over terrain work because they want to get it on the table as fast as possible, but as our artist Mismuse is fond of saying "You don't want to be mediocre, do you?" We'll be releasing a lot of tutorials as time goes on, so stay tuned for more tips on our website and here on Dakka.
What do you use for the falling liquids? Is it stretched Necron sprue, or hobby water?
I use a few different techniques, but for the most part it's hot glue. I plan on doing a tutorial on this technique later on to show the details involved because I get asked about this a LOT.
Im noticing a lot of Hirst arts stuff in the terrain pieces, notably the desert market scene. Isn't reselling that kind of... you know... illegal?
I acutally only used Hirst products on that one particular desert market piece (which I should also add was inspired by Lut Gholien, the desert city from Diablo 2,) In the early days of our terrain making, we used a variety of products, from old toys to old terrain pieces and accessories that I already had. Since then, we've begun to sculpt, cast and use our own resin accessories and detail bits, so any crates, pallets, drums, skulls, pipe fittings, electric boxes, Etc. you see in any other pictures are from our first generation of original sculpts.

Don't worry Nerd, we aren't going anywhere! Just drop a line when you're ready and we'll work out a schedule. Although it should be mentioned to anyone who may be interested and undecided, that our commission queue is growing rapidly. Please contact us if interested in a project, as we're already scheduling into next year (depending on the size of the project.)

While it would be easy for me to reply with the expected "build a hanger with catwalks" type idea, but my mind doesn't work right. My first thought was a giant 4' x 6' engine room, covered with walkways, giant pipes and ramps, dominated by a vast, gothic machine with skulls and buttresses and flashing lights.
How would I make it? No idea but I would cackle like a madman as I work on it.

Yeah I'll join you on that one. I still just have some MDF boards, to scared to do anything to them as I figure all I will do is make it worse. I can see what I want to do in my head (because it is based on the capital wasteland in fallout 3) but I have absolutely no idea how to transform real physical material into that dream. Or nightmare. Or whatever. At the moment, I take the fight to Flatworld - home to absolutely nothing :(

When I started doing all this, I made pieces inspired by locations in popular games, and I had this very grand idea to recreate all of Megaton city in 28mm scale. After spending some time working out the size of the project and materials needed I realized I would probably have to shelf the idea for a while. Anyone else want to pick up the challenge?

Megaton? Ouch, that would take me... well, at the rate I am going, around 600 years. I was thinking more 'wasteland', with something like Arefu on a broken highway bridge type thing. I'm still psyching myself up for it...

We're finishing up a large project that we've had on the books for a while now, a set of pieces with a slightly different theme than anything we've done so far, so I should have some interesting new material up by next week. As far as building replicas of our work, I don't mind at all as long as it's just for personal use and you don't also sneak in my house and fashion a human-skin mask from my face and pretend to be me.
(Also, send us pics when finished, we love getting pictures.)

Aduro wrote:Have you guys done any Malifaux terrain? It seems like it would mesh really well with your dense/busy style of terrain.
I really, really want to do Malifaux terrain. We've had some big projects in the books that got scrapped for one reason or another. We've put together some amazing visions for cobbled streets and dense, complicated systems of victorian houses and walkways and waterways. Hopefully one day we'll have a commission that follows through! I might make something like this just for fun if I get impatient, to go with my box of Malifaux figures waiting to be painted, but time is at a such a premium. So if it has a window or a gap that you can see through if you put your head at table-level, you can draw LOS through the whole thing? Forgive my ignorance, they don't let me out of the shop to actually play very much lately. So hungry.... If the model can see through a window, it can shoot out, and can be shot in turn. If only a few models in the squad can see (ie because the others are looking through walls) only those that have actual LOS can shoot. If the enemy can see one model of a squad it can shoot the whole squad, but they will get cover.

This sounds reasonable and doesn't sound so different than what I was used to years ago. I've always liked making pieces that you could get a unit on or behind for high ground with a little bit of cover. I was getting the impression that rules were now allowing two tanks on opposite sides of the table to shoot each other through a building just because it has a little hole or window somewhere in the wall, which would make half the models we make phantoms in game play terms. So I'm still wondering what Archont meant about none of our terrain blocking LOS, and if there are any glaring reoccurring issues with what we've been making, or if players out there have some very specific needs that makes a piece of terrain fun to actually use in a game. This just because I really want to make pieces that are playable as well as pretty, and I can't do it without feedback. (Don't worry, I won't compromise quality in my designs, we're good at blending form and function.)

Do you soar above a bustling metropolis and gesture vaguely downwards at the living, breathing streets that pulse with life and say "What is this made of?" Do you hold a newborn baby in your arms, with all the splendor and mystery and potential that comes from existence itself and ask "WHAT IS THIS MADE OF?" DO YOU????

Everything we make right now is original, whether it's commissioned work or public offerings. Maybe one day we'll have kits available, but even those will probably have a unique twist to keep them from falling into the standard "cookie cutter" look of cast terrain. But I shouldn't say more at this time.

This topic is pure crazyness.
Your sceneries look so good. The hills for exemple are quite simple to do (at least they seem to be simple) but the result is awesome.
When I'll have time enough I'll make some new scenery elements, and be sure your topic will be very inspiring.

Didn't realise the bunker was so large until I saw Steve Looking good though. Also eagerly awaiting the alien bone yard

My goal is to vanquish the lowered expectations and stereotypes of terrain projects one back-breaking piece at a time until everyone, everywhere realizes it doesn't make sense to spend 2 weeks painting a figure and only 2 hours cutting out the building he'll be standing on.
So we love to hear that anything we do is inspiring, keep that feedback rolling in!

The bunker is excellent, but I'd really like to see more steampunk stuff. Your steampunk ruin from a few months ago is the most amazing piece of scenery I've ever seen.

Well I spend more time doing terrains... but my level is not really all that up there like you.
Could you please do more tutorials, pretty please please please? I'm currently doing your hill tutorial now, only I haven't found a good MDF board substitute here (except for plywood, which is quite a bitch to cut).

A good substitute would be perforated pegboards. I've looked it up and a lot of people suggested to go to traditional construction suppliers instead of depot to find these. (lawanit) Someone also spotted these and I quote "Saw some yesterday sa ACE, SM Fairview" I'm guessing that's in Manila. Goodluck!

Lawanit? That's bamboo sheets, I think. I know where to get those. And Ace Hardware SM Fairview's like 10 minutes away from my house.
It's kinda weird that people in Dakka are now talking about SM Fairview: I feel like THE INTERNET WORLD AND MY WORLD ARE MERGING. And you quoting something written in Taglish (Tagalog-English mash-up, although there's only one word in Tagalog there). It's awesome AND weird.
Anyway, thanks! I'll be checking out lawanit first thing in the morning.

Lawanit clip boards and panels that they use for papag. They also use it I think to make chalk boards. From memory they seem to be equivalent of MDF. Not so weird quoting taglish, I'm fluent in tagalog as well.
Lysenis I hound Runt about it and I'm afraid I'm contributing to the delay as I've been unsatisfied with some of the components and is notorious for scrapping and redesigning some parts of it. We've gone beyond and into the crazy and blown our budget but we don't care. We decided to go all out at no added cost but requires a bit more time. Patience indeed is definitely something you have plenty of and in the end it will be well worth it. Runt's next big log will be about it and we'll share it here in Dakka.

Somehow knowing that Mismuse can speak Tagalog makes me want to hyperventilate.
I had walls once made of lawanit. Never occurred to me that I can use them, though.

If it's of any consolation, we're even further behind on that infamous "Phase II" project as well, (and the thing involving that bicycle gear.) Some projects just don't go the way we expect, but in the end everyone ends up happy.
Except Mismuse, nothing's ever good enough.

What do you expect? I am perfectly content still as I have always been. This gives me more time to paint my Blood Falcons. Let me know when you will need their color scheme OK. I have perfect confidence in your guys amazing work. I can't wait to see what comes out of your shack shop next!

If I ever win the Powerball, which sadly I did not last week when it was up over $200m, you're going to be making me a ton of stuff.
P.S. What happened to the Eldar Guardian than used to tour all your creations? I liked him better and miss him.

Hmmm... Oddly, those last two seem a little lacking, actually.
I'm not exactly certain what it is about the Imperial bunker, but it's sorta flattish? Perhaps it's the scale, but there seems to be too little tiny detail, for actual scale. Even the odd bullet hole or scorchmark might make it work better- right now I think it's a bit too pristine.
Something similar for the Steampunk style terrain bit, too. most of it is great, but the boiler bit sticks out as 'fake' looking- once again, not weathered enough, needs more verdigris and drips and heat discolorations- more variance, so it doesn't look so 'plastic toy' alongside the other stuff, which all has much more believable texture.

Hi Anvil, your comments raise some pretty good points and we appreciate all kinds of feedback.
You are right, either of those pieces could have been detailed more, with more plating, weathering and patina, But a large number of the pieces we produce on a weekly basis are "test-bed" pieces, where we may be trying out a new style, color scheme or other technique, before we apply those same techniques to one of our larger, more intricate commissioned works. And since we also need to run our business effectively, we usually finish these pieces to a fair level of quality and sell them off on eBay, giving buyers a chance to land a great deal, greatly discounted from our regular commission rates. If I were to spend more than say, a week, on a piece, I wouldn't possibly be able to start the auction reasonable rate, so there's a constant juggling act between the holy trinity of terrain: playability - affordability - aesthetics.
Trust me, we are our own worst critics here, every piece gets a scathing review. If we were to do dioramas for competitions I think you would see a totally different approach and thoroughness in detail, but for now at least, despite the handful of flaws you see (and the several thousand flaws that I see) I really want our terrain to be accessible, to be brought home by average people and played with, or be used as inspiration to show others they can achieve great effects with just a little extra effort.

That's Steve, I try to give him some down-time from exploring all the creepy, dangerous, landscapes we usually send him to, but since he's become somewhat of a celebrity, I'll make sure he returns soon for our next round of... well, whatever we make next!

Be prepared that it will take a lot of time BUT having said that it is WELL worth the wait. They are not quite that expensive but it is a pretty red penny.

I just found the thread today and have been running through, drooling over the pics.
I have a whole little story in my head now, about a lone Eldar who is exploring the ruins of a out of the way planetary system, stranded and alone...or is he?
