More small works (by our standards at least!) until we catch up on our major project logs.
Growing weary of seeing people comment that the hills in our first tutorial were not easy to actually play on, I decided to whip out some flattish plateau-style hills, then I got carried away playing with erosion effects, then I just had to stick a tower on top.

I would love to see how they look! Many people enjoyed our hill-tutorial, but there has been an equal amount of feedback that they seem impractical for game play. I should have shown more examples of how you can modify the design to make the hills look any way you like!

I'll post photos in my P&M blog when i have the time to take them (and I suck at photography so I let my professional photographer friends take photos for me). And thanks to that tutorial, now my hills look like, well, actual hills and not multi-layered landforms. They're not impractical at all if you design them right: don't make the slopes too steep and models can stand on it just fine.

Pretty much why people have unpainted miniatures: no time!
I currently have a 75% unpainted army, plus two other commisioned armies, plus two boxes of DnD miniatures I swore I would repaint (because prepainting of DnD minis are horrible) AND a bunch of terrain I should finish.

Oh the joys of scratch-building. For those of you wondering, Lysenis here commissioned a Space Hulk X-board project from us way back when we just started taking commissions, and at the time I had no real way to judge how long or involved some projects will be, so it's stretched out into one of our longer-running projects, partially because of design and layout delimmas and partially because there's just no way to speed up some kinds of work.
For example, this kind of piece:
takes several weeks or more, and it's just a few areas of pipes and trusses. For the X-boards we're completely covering an area about 22" x 15" with intricate spaceship interior, including pipes, machines, LEDs, corridors, labs, and any other kind of details you can imagine. I'm finally out of the design phase and making good progress, so expect to see the project log as we have it so far re-posted here on Dakka within the next couple weeks with new updates as well.
25081
Post by: Lysenis
I believe it has stretched longer then the Battle Board right? That was what 18 months? First update on the project for my X Board was July 2010 So its been about 2 years. I think I got everything started around this time then.
Do not be discouraged to get things commissioned. My stuff is so indepth and they have so much leeway that it was expected. At least by me anyways. . .

Quick question: how did you guys do the posters and newspapers in these photos:
Of course they have to be printed, but is there a specific kind of paper you used? I'm more curious about how you achieved the lightly crumpling effect, and how the posters are slightly peeling: is it in the adhesive used or what?

This is one of the questions I get asked the most, I'll probably do a step-by-step at some point. Yes they are printed, but really nothing fancy past that. I use a crisp, good quality all-purpose paper. I cut and hack at the posters a little for rips, tears and holes, dip the back of the poster in PVA glue watered down with a tiny bit of sepia ink, add spots and stains or darker edges, and apply. There's no trick to making them look like they're old and peeling, I just take the time to bend corners or crumple them in realistic ways. Additional staining or dusting with MiG pigments, turpentine washes Etc. can make them look even more old, dusty and faded as well.

After playing Limbo, I spent a day looking at pictures of black widows and orb-weavers/wolf-spiders, combining the creepy, thin look of a widow with the beefy body and oversized fangs of a wandering hunting spider, the kind that live in burrows rather than perch on webs.
I'm quite done looking at pictures of spiders now, thank you very much.

Sure, here's a better view:
I made a rough body shape out of Super Sculpey, then added in details with Green Stuff putty, such as fang sheaths and eyes and ridges. Then with the body wedged into the cave I used long armatures of metal wire to make the legs, which I then coated with Green Stuff, shaped and smoothed, and before it had set fully hard, I made adjustments to the wire to bend them a little closer in the shape that I wanted. I drilled holes in the body, inserted the exposed wires and then blended the joints with more green stuff. I used little bits of polypropylene plastic to keep any bits of still-soft putty from sticking to the cave while it set, then pulled it out, removed plastic, primed and painted.

I think the gloss varnish on the carapace is that finishing touch that just threw me over the edge. That and the spiderwebs. Very creepy.

I have a lot of different tools that serve special purposes, but the ones I use the most for general shaping and moving putty around are moist fingers, moist wooden tools with either tapered points or curved wooden spatulas, and my favorite is a tool that has silicon nub or points on either end that's sold for sculpting with sculpey. I can't find a picture right now but I see them for sale at art supply stores. Again, keep everything moist but not wet.

Keeping the spider partially visible adds a lot to the creepiness, sometimes showing less is more.
The webs are simply cotton fiber strands, applied with a toothpick and a brush moistened with PVA glue and a good deal of patience. Once dry, I blended the webs in with a little bit of paint and pigment powder. Thank you for asking! All of our terrain is custom and original, and if you mean the urban ruined buildings, they're predominantly made with different kinds of foamcore, plasticard and good deal of our own resin components and trim pieces.
We sell pieces on eBay and cycle through different themes, and we take commissioned orders as well, so if you're interested you should drop us a line or visit our website

Sometimes, in other cases it's f spackled with light filler, or just lightly textured and the structure and resin parts give it durability.

The handful of tips and tutorials you've put out already have been fantastic. There are hundreds of tutorials already floating around the net on making specific features, though - various building types, woods, hills, etc. (though none compare to yours in terms of realism or flavor (warning: floss thoroughly after chewing pine bark), in my opinion). I think a great deal of what sets yours apart is the planning and the groundwork. More advice on those, I think, would be of the greatest benefit to the DIY community. We can vaguely see what you're doing and why through project logs, but something simple, designed from the ground up to clearly demonstrate the process (with explanatory text, to match), would be a huge boon.

As a long time supporter of 3T I have to agree with Oadie on this one. It would help improve the quality of everyone's DIY work, the only thing they would need to comprehend whats going after that is the Vision which 3T has an almost never ending supply of.

LOEW CORNELL has wooden and metal sets that we've used for sculpting as well as other things. I also have some rubber tipped tools not sure of the brand name since the name rubbed off long ago. I'll research it further and i'll just do some product reviews later on.

But i've only seen two tutorials posted I can't find more. Have you done two or are there more?
I've gotten enough questions on bases that I'm probably going to start branching into custom basing, resin bases, basing tutorials, etc. But only when my current workload allows. That workload is also why I only have a couple of in-depth DIY articles up, but I have a lot more in progress!
oadie wrote:I think a great deal of what sets yours apart is the planning and the groundwork. More advice on those, I think, would be of the greatest benefit to the DIY community. We can vaguely see what you're doing and why through project logs, but something simple, designed from the ground up to clearly demonstrate the process (with explanatory text, to match), would be a huge boon.
Lysenis wrote:I have to agree with Oadie on this one. It would help improve the quality of everyone's DIY work, the only thing they would need to comprehend whats going after that is the Vision which 3T has an almost never ending supply of.
I really appreciate the feedback, it's hard to gauge what parts of what we do are of interest to the community, I often take for granted the little things like planning, design and the artistic/engineering side and focus on talking about the mechanics of layering materials, etc.in our guides and logs.
Right now we're trying to put out a few more actual guides, rather than just project logs, which are really just glossed-over stories about how we make a piece. In our future guides we'll focus more on the step-by-step art of terrain making, and talk about the how/what/why parts of what we do. This has to go into the project log, it was by far one of the most stunning moments on any project. I was all heated up from one of our regular arguments about this board, something ridiculous like the shape of the laboratory walls, and finally after nearly shouting out what my plans were, and sketching some crappy thumbnails, she pondered for a second and then went "Oh, okay then. You're right. Carry on." and strutted off like nothing happened.
I called back "Right about what??"
"All of it."
Anyhow, yeah I'm finally making good progress on my X-board days, so next update incoming in a day or two.

We should count that a win for all "man" kind.
On that note I need to see more and an eta would be lovely btw.

Terraformer, considering in 6th people want to have fortifications and ones to match their army perhaps that would be worth a go?
I was wondering if you could custom build an orky fort to the dimensions of a Fortress of redemption.
Roughly 24" long and 14 high. Not sure about the other widths from my head though.
I will PM you this question also, thanks.

The new rules for fortifications have created quite a stir around here as you could imagine, we have some projects in the works and we're getting a lot of calls for custom bastions, fortresses, landing pads Etc. We'll discuss your idea further, I'll PM you

Lyse, working on your update right now bud, the construction is painfully slow going but coming together much more quickly now that I finished the last (hopefully) round of custom resin parts. An early - mid Fall completion actually looks pretty realistic at this point.
In the meantime, we have a few more Ork huts Mismuse has been working on between display boards, refining her technique.

X-boards are still in construction but the end is in sight. I cannot wait to be able to start painting this. The painting will be a breeze, its the construction that takes up all the time on something like this.
I updated the project log on our web page, I still intend on reposting the whole thing on Dakka soon too.

Love the iron face in the ruins, and the various ladders, doors slightly ajar and abandoned caves do a lot to make you feel invited to 'explore' the terrain, making it way more dynamic.

Thanks! The face is an original sculpt from a new line of products that we're slowly working on.
Also, I can think of nothing more inviting than a dark cave strewn with giant webs and skulls

The iron face really draws you in nice touch and the slightly ajar door really does give depth to the piece, I also like the small opening in the ground like a small shaft whats down there then ?
The cob webs are great little touches like that brings life to a model, or in this case the lack of life any chance of a how to ?
I have seen some where lately about making Cob webs using some solution and an airbrush, but you have to be careful as it can damage your airbrush is this the same stuff

Little bit of cotton, PVA glue, some toothpicks and a brush and about several hours of cussing like a sailor. I'll probably do a DIY article soon about making webs.

I would love a web tutorial! They are one of the things that stood out as being really unique to a terrain piece, of course, everything else about the piec is equally amazing!

Do you mean cotton thread? sounds really difficult. i would probably require a microscope to be able to do that much detail on my stuff!

More like cotton balls, we pull little bits off, spread the fibers out with toothpicks and attach and stretch out the fibers with PVA glue. I definitely need to write that guide, we get a flood of questions on it!

Hey terraformer, you've gotten me really inspired with your stuff and blog tutorials. I'm wondering how you make the stone blocks, like what that tower is made out of? Are they cut from insulation foam and textured somehow, or is it all one piece?
Thanks and keep amazing us!

In the old days I would make some stone blocks out of blue-foam, but I didn't like the lack of durability, so I started sculpting and casting resin cobblestones, pavers, sheets of wall texture, etc. The tower for example is made from these pieces (shameless plug) that have been heated and wrapped around a tube. Lowe's, Home Depot, or various garden centers and nurseries have it, as well as landscape suppliers. I found a large stock in the garden center of wal-mart recently, just make sure it's the "large" variety if you plan on making sizable terrain.

Brilliant!! Although i cant help but feel there would be some disturbance of the blood around the bloodfall and the monster

Post by: lone dirty dog
The head statue pouring blood from his mouth is great however the monster rising from the blood pool does seem rather clean and no disruption of blood around him is a bit odd.
But it does look cool still and nice paint job

Okay, the head in the rocks spitting blood from its mouth genuinely creeped me out. Very nice.
23050
Post by: Terraformer
i agree about the blood disturbance, I'm still in process of experimenting with ways to make realistic ripples, waves and other liquid motion effects that wont break the bank in terms of being even more time intensive, and still have the realistic appearance I see in my head, so for now still pools look better than something substandard :p

Post by: lone dirty dog
I understand what you are saying but it was only an observation as you seem to enjoy lifting the bar on terrain building, also I felt (as good as the paint job is ) the mouth and tentacles would have a degree of blood stuck to them after raising from the blood pool.
I dont want to seem like I am trying to rip it to pieces as I think it does look great, I just felt I needed to be honest.
It is a great piece and I cant wait to see more like this.
23050
Post by: Terraformer
I love the observations! We always want to improve, and getting the opinions of others is how we get there. It's one reason why we put out stuff on auction and such.
My original plan for the blood was to sculpt the splashes and ripples, then cast the sculpted parts in the same colored, slightly translucent resin, but like I said... budget-wise that would be overkill for pieces that I want to keep attainable.

I may make a set of splashes and ripples at some point, then design my pieces to fit them, rather than the reverse, allowing versatility.
The blood is epoxy resin, I used opaque resin dyes of blue, red and brown, but I didn't follow a formula I just added a little of each until it matched my sample I had made previously, which I based off real blood from a hobby wound... so yeah, blood sacrifice.
