Pokemon Go released in the US yesterday evening, any other Dakka Members playing it? I have a small group of friends around my town that are playing and we have all declared for Team Instinct(Yellow) to help spread the love of the great Battery Bird.

Reddit FAQ

Egg Hatchings sorted by Distance.

If anybody finds more information to add, let me know and I will put it on this post for quick references.

I and few other people i know are playing, but it seems like theres been more down time than anything so far. The 'our servers are experiencing issues' message come up a lot.

Yeah, they have been up and down. I don't think they anticipated this many people downloading and playing it. I live in a pretty Rural area, the spawns are awful. Went to town earlier and was finding tons of things though.

Yeah, servers are dead at the moment. Hoping they are doing a maintenance on them to help out. I lost an incense earlier to it :(

It's been fun to play while the servers are working. I know soooo many people playing right now. Team Blue seems really popular in my area, but myself and a core of my closest friends have chosen Team Yellow and the battery bird.

It's a blast when it wants to be more than a loading screen! I missed out on a Pinser because of that, super disappointing. On the plus side, it looks like my local Pokemon population is bug-heavy, which is fine by me and should mean I'll get another shot...

The sad thing is that I've picked up a worse sunburn from two days of this game than I did from a week at the beach.

I been having a good time, I am on vacation so I am grabbing all sorts of stuff before I head back home.

I went to a towncenter and had like 15 pokestops, 2 gyms and tons of pokemon. I just walked around casually and had a grand time.

So far my best pokemon are Pinsir, Eggexcute and eevees... My friend caught a pidgeotto.

Every gym I been too has been guarded by a badass rattatta so get your fighting types and train them up to dethrone these trash normals!

Here are the latest tips from a friend who knows their stuff. Since there hasn't really been a tutorial for this game and they just expect everyone to "wing it" from the beginning this will be useful to many. This list contains some simple things just in case some things were overlooked.

- Pokemon take Candy to level up and ALSO to Evolve. Candy is basically the entire game. When you capture ANY Pokemon you get Candy of their class. This is what you are meant to spend the most time farming.

- Eggs are the chase. Hatching them yields big rewards. You get more Candy from a hatch than you would a capture and sometimes it's a lot - I've gotten 10x Candy from a hatch.

- You can only have 9 eggs in your inventory at any given time. These range from 2KM to 5KM to 10KM and the higher the KM, the bigger and better your hatch. You WANT to clear these out asap and hatch as many as possible because once you hit your 9 cap, you're screwed - they won't even drop while you're capped, and you can't increase your egg capacity. If you spend any money in this game at all, your #1 purchase without question is egg incubators. Get AS MANY eggs going at the same time as possible, its the most important part of the game.

- You can drive at around 5-10 MPH and the game DOES count it as walking, but... that ISN'T PAYING THE IRON PRICE YOU WUSS

- The Lucky Eggs double your XP. They're very valuable in the early game as discovery XP is huge. Later on in the game, less and less important as you find more and more of the species and thus have less discovery XP coming in. However, here's a tip: if you save up a whole bunch of Candy and amass a bunch of possible Evolves, WAIT to evolve them and get a whole bunch ready. If you pop a Lucky Egg BEFORE evolving all of them manually, the evolutions COUNT for discovery XP and the Lucky Egg WILL double that discovery XP. Meaning, with just one Lucky Egg you can get a massive discovery XP bonus by using it and then evolving all of your lowbies at the same time. I realize microtransactions aren't for everyone, but even one or two Lucky Eggs using this evolve method can be a huge swing in your favor if done right.

- Incense is good but very hit or miss. 70% of the time the incense guys that pop up are Pidgeys or the poo-snakes or poo-rats. Sometimes, though, a pokemon you've never seen will pop up from it (I got my first Koffing this way) so it isn't terrible value.

- If you "Transfer" a Pokemon (scroll down a bit in their personal menu when you click on them in your inventory) it PERMANENTLY deletes them and grants you 1 Candy. As attached as you may be to some of them, you should be doing your best to clear out the duds as often as possible.

- Okay, here's the most important tip: Pokemon hold their respective gauge level meter positioning when they evolve. What this means is, you are basically spending the game hunting for the high RNG valued targets. Whenever you capture ANYTHING, evaluate it's placement on the little semi-circle arc over it in your inventory. If it's at 80%+, it's probably pretty good. 90%+ and it's a definite keeper. But if that half circle is, say, 50% or less, it's a dud.

- ONLY BOTHER TO UPGRADE THE POKEMON THAT START OUT VERY HIGH ON THEIR LEVEL METER TO FINISH THEM. Don't waste time grinding up their level meter from the bottom up - it takes Candy to upgrade and you're better off spending it on Evolving. You really only want to be bothering with Upgrading when you're bringing them from like 85-90% to 100%. That 100% will carry over to their Evolved stages, so if you get a Squirtle to 100% atk and evolve it all the way up to Blastoise, that Blastoise is now also instantly 100% atk. It's a LOT easier to hunt for a high starting level Squirtle than it is a Blastoise so this is the best method for securing a max Blastoise.

- To better explain what i mean by those last two points: You may loot 20 Pidgeys in a day, but those Pidgeys could range anywhere from 2 CP to 250 CP. You would want to set a bar for where you start actually saving - say, 240 CP or more - and just immediately purge any of the Pidgeys under 240 CP to the yard. Any Pidgeys at 240+ CP, Evolve them and Upgrade them as needed.

- Different Pokemon have different CP Scaling. It's not universal. One Tier 1 Pokemon might only go to 200 CP max while another goes to 300 CP. Some of the high end end game Pokemon get pretty high... much higher than others. Don't overcommit to using your Upgrade Energy on the middle class to weak ones - just accept their inherent CP for the time being and stockpile the Upgrade juice for when you get the premiums.

- ANY Pokemon, big or small can evolve in to a pretty reasonable Gym fodder toon. Don't feel dumb farming a million Pidgeys. I have some Pidgeots at 800 CP already from Upgrading and Evolving - it adds up quick!

- THE SAME TWO POKEMON CAN INHERENTLY START WITH DIFFERENT SKILLS. They're not always identical. If you're debating between two similarly leveled up Pokemon, compare their skill sets.

- The way skills work is in combat, you spam the weak attack building up energy to use the Special attack. This special attack is a blue box that fills up with each weak attack hit. Some attacks are one big blue box with a big damage whammy hit, other Special attacks are quick strike weaker damage hits but with very quick to fill up blue boxes. While us players may favor the big box whammy hits, keep in mind that when you're using that Pokemon to defend a Gym, the AI will use that attack and as players we can actually dodge it. So while the big single attacks SEEM better on paper because WE use them appropriately and the enemy doesn't really dodge them, always remember that the AI piloting that Pokemon may be better off using a ton of quick strike in your face attacks instead! (I've had plenty of success dodging the big nukes myself!)

- CONSTANTLY monitor your radar in the bottom right corner. This updates like crazy and it's your only chance at spotting the big dudes. They seem a bit more picky in their location and I've had really big guys like Onix just vanish quickly after I didn't uncover them quick enough. You really have to be on the ball adjusting your routes to the updated radar locations or miss out on the rarest ones.

- If you hold your finger down and spin the pokeball before firing it, it starts to spin and becomes a curveball. This usually breaks my game on impact and the theory is this has a higher chance for capture rate but no one really knows for sure. But it's kinda fun!

- As you level up you start to unlock new items, like better potions, fruit and better pokeballs. Be picky over when and where you use the better pokeballs and fair warning - they toss like gak. It's weird. They seem to intentionally go haywire ALL THE TIME upon tossing. Don't get mad, it's programmed to do this.

- Gyms seem to cap out at 3 trainers max. Be sure to jump on all of your faction specific Gyms asap to ensure you get in on the 3 cap before others fill it up. EDIT: Okay I've been corrected on this. If you train at your Gym against allies, the prestige level can go up and if you get it high enough the Gym Level will go up, meaning more trainers can be added in! So if it's maxed, battle your allies until it levels up! My game admittedly keeps freezing when I try to win Gym matches so I've spent more time working on just farming and hoarding until they improve the servers.

- I messed this up pretty hard on Day 1. Basically if you open the shop, top right corner is a shield icon showing you how many Gyms you're currently engaged with on defense. If you click this icon you "collect" rewards for the day based on the total number. You can collect from up to TEN (10) Gyms a day but you CANNOT collect more than once a day. This actually pays really well - it's like 500 of the upgrade resource to a max of +5000 a day. TLDR here is, you run around trying to cap as many Gyms / help reinforce your team color until you get that shield to 10, and THEN hit collect. Don't be an idiot like me and think you collect each Gym separately and hit it before that T_T
And of course you don't NEED to be at 10 to collect, but I mean, c'mon now...

I saw a statistical analysis on youtube and apparently 'golf courses' are treasure troves of unique pokemon. Anything which has distinct classifications on google maps is going to have 'different' stuff than the street trash ratattas. Rivers are also explicitly over-seeded with water more than other water bodies.

Also, don't expect unique stuff at graveyards... they intentionally didn't mess with graveyards out of respect for the dead.

So are pokestops just all 3 pokeballs or am I just on a streak?

If I recall from beta, the most a pokestop can have is 3-4 items until you are at least level 5. After level 5 they can have up to six items. The most common item being PokeBalls. Items do also include revives, potions, coins and eggs.

Heh. The way you described that I thought I was gonna see some horror story about kids getting stalked by pokesavvy pedophiles through the game.

Pleasantly surprised to see just a watch where you're walking PSA. Important though, the attention needed to track things and actually throw balls while driving WILL cause wrecks. Shouldn't handle the phone in car at all if driving but PoGo activities are another order of magnitude. Maybe navigating to stops If hands free but catchung stuff in traffic? And it's reaaaly tempting...

Servers were pretty good today after noon. Hardly any trouble in the evening, got to do some tracking at the local park. There is currently a pretty good war for the 3 gyms in my small town, all three factions trying to claim at least one.

Of course as a follower of the great Battery Bird, I have to do my part to show up the fire chicken and blue boobie.

I caught a Bulbasaur.

Not sure if I'm actually going to play this or not, though. Seems right off the bat like it's going to require gak tons of in-app purchases to really do anything, I don't really have the time to dedicate to playing/grinding actual Pokemon games, let alone this, and it also requires that I do lots and lots of my least favorite activities: walking and adventure. I hate adventure!

Also, kinda disappointed with character creation, so limited. I wanted to make myself super fat and old but I can't. :(

You didn't play very long then, because there really isn't a reason to do in-app purchases unless you are super impatient or do not want to travel to the pokestops. You can get most things from a Pokestop, the things you can't get you can earn currency for by having a strong gym to earn you the Poke Coins for shop purchases. You also don't really need to walk, if you have a good lookout passenger and drive below 30, you can just cruise from stop to stop and catch pokemon in between.

Pokemon Go! (FAQ First Page/Now with Polls!) @ 2016/07/09 13:35:07

Post by: nkelsch

Seems casual friendly... Catching and pokestops don't get harder to do due to other people... And Gyms, just find one of your color and you can pile on your weak pokes and gain income.

The only way I can see this being bad is if you have an organized club in your area who all chose the same color and they dominate your gyms. So far I have seen a pretty wide spread.

I agree, it is pretty spread out. I live in a pretty small town(5000 people on a good year) and we have strong presence from 3 teams. Every time my team takes a gym, somebody comes to attack in about 1-2 hours.

I haven't seen anyone cruising the same stops as me yet, but I keep oddish hours so maybe they're on regular schedules.

The local museum/outdoor sculpture park is a goldmine. Regular poke's but its gotta have like 20 stops pretty concentrated. Plus it's basically a park so I can farm both stops AND dad points(TM) by taking the kids along. Finally started seeing different stop drops and got a few eggs plus 8 pokeballs at the same stop.

Most interesting is how fast stops refresh, it can't be more than 5-10 minutes.

Yeah my wife and I started it today and my son is getting a phone to play on as well. We've rode our bikes for 4 to 5 miles then just now walked roughly 2 ish miles and soon as my phone charges up we are driving the next town over and walking their paths for more. I'm nearly a level 5.

Outside of the occasional freeze up of the app it's been working well enough on our end. I'm digging this so far.

I played it very briefly, like an hour, and I didn't get very far. I was just making an assumption since I noticed everything costs coins and coins cost money, and there wasn't really anything else I could do with the Pokemon. Admittedly I'm not sure how it really works yet, I don't know how to find Pokestops or gyms other than just walking around and stumbling into them. I'm assuming gyms are also how you "train" them.

I have two Venonats and a Paras now. Apparently I'm a bug catcher.

Ok I need to change my previous statement a bit. We drove to town like I said and man oh man did we receive crashes like crazy. We spent roughly an hour messing around because we kept getting the server errors, it drove me nuts! It was so bad I think I'm going to give it a fairly bad rating until that gets fixed. Good gravy!

Yeah servers are an issue, I think it's just too popular or something.

Jealous of my sister's apartment complex, was visiting and Pokemon kept wandering through her living room whereas at my place I bit maybe two dudes on a half kilometer loop of my street. Evees live here though, so that's a bonus.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I'm not sure but I swear you get a daily stipend of balls and incense. Poke stops are all landmarks. Churches, sculptures, etc. Parking lots seem to be good places to find Pokemon, parks too I'm assuming .

I evolved my first Eevee and got a Jolteon. I'm enjoying having it, but I crashed the only time I swung by a gym today.

I'm wondering if there's money to be made in an egg-hatching service- meet someone at a track, and they run 5k with your phone.

Yeah about once an hour I'll get a Pokemon close enough to catch without leaving my living room. But we do have 5 or 6 pokestops within walking distance so that's a plus. You can re-up at pokestops every 5 minutes which is nice. I've got a Ratacate that has a CP219. Not a bad start I think

The game wasn't supposed to be officially out until next week. The released it to the stores so that beta players could get early access. Someone then put the link on reddit with the APK and everyone started to download and play it. Then there were many people upset they couldn't play, nothing worked right because they downloaded it (even though they weren't supposed too). This prompted them to release it to the general public. It will get better but they weren't really ready or prepared for it to go live just yet.

Huh thanks for that. Interesting. Server issues aren't really unexpected for this kind of thing and it *is* free, not a huge deal but if they got stutter stepped on the start it helps explain things.

The game is officially out in Oceania and North America, the problem is players in Europe and Asia getting access to the game and overloading the servers.

Okay, I have a slightly better understanding of how this works. Pokestops are kinda all over the place: churches, the post office, statues even...there's a stop here in town that's basically just a bust. I was driving home from a friend's house and there's another Pokestop that's just the entrance to a state park at the other end of a bridge. Even a self-storage place, lol.

And there's like tons of gyms even in this tiny little town. Apparently I need to be level 5 to get into that, though.

Also, what is CP? Is that like a Pokemon's "level"? I have a CP100 Eevee, a CP170-something Tangela, and a few others between CP25 and CP50-something. Missed an opportunity to catch another Bulbasaur, a Pidgeotto, and even a Pinsir out at my friend's house where sadly you just can't get a fething signal to save your life. :(

This is, sadly, the rarest and what I also assume to be the most powerful Pokemon that I've found so far. Stupid Tangela. I have a CP92 Bulbasaur now, though.

Yeah CP is your fighting power though I'm not sure how analogous to level in the gameboy games it is. You raise it with dust and candy And wild poke's have a random score.

Common wisdom is to keep and improve only the wild Pokemon with the highest CP you can find. Though their abilities are random too and sometimes it's worth powering up an originally weaker guy if he has the right moves.

You mean people killed while playing/because of Pokemon Go? I don't think so, other than in fake clickbait articles, apparently.

Yeah, I've got a collection of what I consider the best I can find at the moment. Got a CP272 Pinsir (who is now the most powerful one I have), a CP220 Seadra, and a couple Bulbasaurs with a higher level but the "best" one I have is XS (which I assume means he's weaker, since XL means they're stronger apparently). Pinsir only knows Fury Cutter and X-Scissor though, and I have no idea how "good" that is.

The arc at the top tells you how powerful the pokemon is, in comparison to others of its similar type. Theoretically, you can max out even a level 10 Rattata- it would just take a buttload of candy and stardust. You can gain candy by Transferring the jobbers back to the Professor- though he apparently eats them, because you cannot get them back.

Interestingly, the pokemon maintain their potential when they evolve- so common wisdom seems to be max out a basic pokemon before evolving it to save some stardust. That will not necessarily tell you how well they will do in a gym fight- for that you need a chart with type weaknesses.

If you're quick, you can pick up pokestops while someone drives you by at about 30 mph. If you're kind, you can swipe for them too- my wife had me dual wielding our cells on the pokestop road near us. I felt silly, and awesome.

So far it's just fighting gyms and afaik there's no interactive PvP there either.

 Sidstyler wrote:
Also, what is CP? Is that like a Pokemon's "level"?
CP is the Combat Power for a Pokemon, it is essentially a general guide for how powerful it is. That doesn't mean that a one that is CP 100 will always win above a CP 75, because it can come down to attacks and if it that type is effective against another type, etc. You use Candy which you the most from hatching eggs. You can also get them by catching that type, then Transfer (you will lose it forever) to the Professor for 1 candy. Candy and Stardust are used to level. The Power up basically increases the CP of that Pokemon. Since you need Candy to Evolve as well, you want to save your Candy for your evolutions and basically keep Pokemon that are high value in CP. When you look at the Pokemon there is a curved line above their head, that shows their CP curve. You basically want to keep things close to the high end, so you use less Candy to raise their power. The rest you turn in for Candy.

There is more information in the general guide I posted on the first page here.

I'm doing pretty well for myself after just 3 days. Have a couple eevee-lutions, vaporeon and flareon specifically, at over 1k CP, a screen-full of various dudes at the 500-900 range, and I've snagged 70 pokedex entries. New stuff is really drying up now though, been a while since I've seen a silhouette of something new, and my trainer level wants 20k for the next level. :/

I'm mainly hoping gym battles get less buggy soon. I've been scoring a bit of dust and coins from defending them (team red wuwu,) but half the time I try to take one it bugs out and does the invincible enemy at 1 hp thing.

I was wondering when this was going to happen. I sort of figured a kid would've gotten run over first or something like that.

Considering how popular the game is I'm glad these incidents aren't more common. I downloaded the game and I have to say it made the idea of walking around LA actually appealing. Kudos Nintendo!

When you evolve a Pokemon do you have the option to replace its move set or is it stuck with the original? If it's stuck with the original then evolving Gyarados from Magikarp seems like a silly idea, since you'll have this big fish monster with garbage like Splash and Struggle forever.

I tried a gym battle for the first time today at the local library, controlled by Team Blue...representing Yellow myself, which seems to be a mistake since all I've seen are Blue dominated gyms around here with an occasional Red one. I got absolutely destroyed, full party wipe (I wasn't expecting to have to roll with a full team though, and mostly all I have are grass, bug, and normal types so not very balanced). I have no idea how to dodge attacks apparently, every one of my attempts failed or was poorly-timed I guess. And I didn't realize at first that you literally just tap the crap out of the enemy Pokemon and spam your attacks that way.

I have 9k stardust I've been saving and I have no idea what to do with it, I was waiting until I found a really good Pokemon before I start powering them up but I haven't found anything really cool yet. I have that Pinsir, I have a CP285 Tauros now, I have a CP104 Eevee I was thinking about trying to evolve but like I said, I'm not 100% sure how evolution works and don't want to turn it into a Flareon or a Jolteon with freaking Quick Attack and Swift.

Also really annoying, I kept seeing the silhouette of Scyther popping up in the bottom right, but I never actually found one. I love Scyther, I want one so bad. The closest gym to my house (they're almost all churches too, anyone else notice that?) is dominated by a guy with a CP950-something Scyther. My jaw literally dropped, I can't believe someone got one that high and that quickly.

It can and will randomize abilities, replacing what was there when you evolve. It doesn't always do it but for the final evolutions, the abilties do change.

To dodge you swipe left or right. You tap to attack, filling the blue bar to get your big attack. Once you get a bar full, you hold down on your pokemon and then release to use that power.

Gym Battles aren't really meant to be solo'd but are designed as team events. Get a group of 2-4 players to attack a gym together. When you attack it, you decrease the prestige which lowers the level of the gym. The level determines how many defenders can be on a gym (swipe left or right to see what is defending before attacking). When you win the prestige bar goes down and if it delevels, that means one less Pokemon defending. You can also attack your own color gym, which increases prestige gaining levels (10 level max) so you can put a Pokemon there. You can also simply wipe them out, but starting out that usually doesn't happen as most have already grinded a good 48 hours into the game so the teams are fairly strong.

Eevee evolution is random. You don't get to choose if it is Flareon or Jolteon, it randomizes it and the new powers.

3 steps means it is the furthest away. 2 steps closer, 1 steps really close. When there are no steps just wait and it will appear. The box will outline and blink with a white border, if you are moving in the correct direction. If you are getting further away it moves down the list, instead of towards the top.

CP1800 Pokemon the highest in the areas that I've seen so far. People have literally been camping out the spots. And of course if you are at Disneyland or Disneyworld, you can max out your inventory from all the Pokestops in less an hour. Then drop 3 lures, in neighboring pokestops catching pokemon every 30 seconds.

All of this is correct except for the blink with a white border thing. That has been debunked. Also, not sure how the list works 100% yet, there is a chance that having something move up and down the list isn't a good way to find it. Some pokemon may have larger ranges than other and this could mess with the position on the list.

No options, though I think some moves get replaced. Still not sure if previous moves have anything to do with what you end up with though..

My evee got water gun and hydro pump when he went to vaporeon. He also wound up with 700something CP from Evee's almost maxed 200something.

I can believe the 950 scyther, I'm chugging along my best but a single person (or at least not married and solely taking care of the kids this weekend...) could have done a ridiculously larger amount than me. I got that vaporeon to 700 something and thats about as far as I could get it at my level of 8 or 9. I keep seeing Scythers and Snorlax but they're all 3 sets of tracks away and I'm never sitting anywhere that I can just wander in the right direction.

Bah didn't see the page flip, my info is mostly rehashing

Oh, so camping out in Disney World is how you win at PoGo. Damn. No vacation time

It hasn't been debunked. We have a 99% capture rate amongst the groups between CA, NY, WA and OR that we're part of (which also includes a good group from Blizzard in CA and another group from WotC in Seattle. Personally my family and I have a 100% capture rate to what I want to capture. Now there are however issues with server, gps lag/creep and other factors which can make it look like it doesn't work that way. When you notice your person isn't tracking properly with you on your location or having heavy loading (pokeball in upper left hand corner) then need to stop to recalibrate. If you notice a lock up, bar vanishes or you suspect a server delay you can close out and restart the app. It will do a refresh.

Think of it like a radar. You are in the center. Then expand a circle around your location (with you at the center) by 30 feet, that is no paw zone. Expand another circle about 90 feet, that is 1 paw zone. The numbers aren't exact, it is a real general number so you get the visual. Then expand another circle around you about 150 feet, that is the 2 paw zone. Then finally a third circle at 210 feet, that is the 3 paw zone.

 GrimDork wrote:

No that isn't the only way. The inner cities vs suburbs have an easier time. You just really need to find a good park area. Most large parks have multiple pokestops within 5-10 minutes, that you can create a circuit to start at one end and by the time you get back around it has refreshed. There are a few other parks that have some close enough to plant multiple lures to overlap as well. Twitter is a good place to find places in your region or facebook, groups and meetups are popping up all over the place.

There's groups walking down the street at 11:30pm on Sunday playing this game. Insanity!

I caught a CP196 Eevee so I decided that was the one to start powering up...and then I got to the point where I can't actually power it up anymore because my trainer level isn't high enough. It's practically maxed but it isn't quite there, so I don't want to evolve it yet.

So, explain how this works to a total no0b?

I was reading about it on an Apple site, about how someone was robbed at gunpoint when they went to a place to collect their pokemons or whatever. And someone else that discovered a dead body down by the river when they went searching for stuff.

Anyway, it sounded like a good way for me to get out and do some walking if it's fun and no one robs me

There are a couple incidents where people have been targeted. Almost all of the criminals have been caught, as far as I'm aware there aren't any that haven't yet. The criminals range from 17-21, although mostly 17-18 from what I've seen of various reports. What they don't realize is that since they have a known "target location" it also means the Police know where to look for them. Like anything though, there will be people that will target them but overall it is fairly safe as there is a lot of traffic and people to those areas. They should have paid attention back in the early days of Ingress when people already tried the same thing and got caught.

A group of friends in the Atlanta area quickly organized and started a group which has been growing crazy. They ended up being on the news. Another group in Seattle, three in CA and two in New York have done similarly.

In a nutshell you download the app. It has a radar that shows Pokemon in the area. When they spawn, you tap them and then fling pokeballs at them to catch them. If you turn off the VR, then it doesn't put real image from the camera in the background and instead just have basic grass. Makes it easier to click them when they spawn, then keep moving while you try to capture them. The rest of the information is in the FAQs.

It is only on IOS. They get a lot of access to things on Google. It seems like it is an oversight at the moment, I doubt they will continue to have that much access, because a lot of it seems unnecessary.

Here is an article about it. Warning: Kotaku

Seems Team Instinct is getting their gak together here in town, I saw a couple of yellow gyms on my way home from work today. That's a relief, got tired of seeing blue everywhere.

I just don't have the kinda time to dedicate to this game to get where everyone else is. I looked at a couple of those blue gyms earlier tonight and I saw Pokemon defending that were in the 1100's. The highest I have right now is a 363 Tauros. Hopefully I'll make more progress this weekend, currently I'm an embarrassment to my team.

Also caught a Squirtle on my lunch break. Fething score! Only CP114 though, but it's certainly better than having no Squirtles.

Once you hit level 10 you'll start finding higher starting CP Pokemon, especially if you use an incense. Wait to evolve a bunch of Pokemon at once while using a Lucky Egg to maximize your experience gains. If you can time it to include hatching eggs all the better.

Only use your stardust on Pokemon that have the white semicircle almost all the way across- that shows their CP in relation to your trainer level. if I could go back I wouldn't use any dust on anything until I hit level 10 and started catching higher CP Pokemon.

Kotaku has a reputation of not being right about things. In this case, the issue had already been addressed by Niantic and a solution was in the works. Many other articles updated to let people know about it, Kotaku has not.

Hence the warning.

Funny how that works because out here everyone (myself included) seems to be Valor and once in a while I'll a blue gym. I've yet to see instinct at all.

I keep seeing posts around that Instinct has fewer players than the other two, but I think that's just coming from online polls and not hard data.

I dunno, where I am it's mystic slightly ahead of valor, with instinct without much of a presence outside of one or two guys I've seen pretty much, and it's roughly the same from friends in other places.

Anecdotal sure, but it seems pretty normal. (Although I've heard Rome has a big instinct team)

I'm level 9 right now and I've already started to. A CP275 Oddish got away from me tonight, and I caught a CP315 Beedrill on my break.

And I didn't realize how much experience you got from hatching eggs, I literally hatched like four of them tonight all at once. Would have been a good time to use that free lucky egg I got from my last level up.

Yeah, I was saving all of my stardust originally but I caved and blew it all the other day. Probably shouldn't have done that. Hopefully it doesn't set me back too much, but I have friends on Facebook who have a stable of 400+ Pokemanz already so I feel like I'm way behind.

Once you hit level 10+ you'll start finding wild Pokemon with 400+ CP, but they're still fairly rare.

Usually not worth it- you'll probably catch one at a higher CP later. Of course of the White Bar is almost all the way the across it can be beneficial to keep it even with your level.

I have stopped using Stardust to upgrade my monsters. I am stockpiling until I reach level 20+ so that I can have naturally higher CP pokemon to use it on. I have also been saving been collecting pidgeys for the candy. I will collect a bunch during the day then I will pop a lucky egg and start evolving them for a massive boost in experience.

Pidgey only cost 12 Candy to evolve in to Pidgeoto, then you just transfer the Pidgeoto off to get more candy.

Totally worth it!

Me and the other half have gotten into it, a little bit. We are debating having a pokemon party at our house. We'd finally get our friends to come visit! Evidently we get a lot of spawns of cool stuff... for example, I see Dratini every night at about 9 PM. There are 2 gyms in walking distance that all rotate between all 3 teams. So it could be pretty fun!

I'm amazed, actually, that I've talked to people in the neighborhood more in the last couple days than in the last couple years. All about Pokemon. It's really kinda cool.

Pokemon Go! (FAQ First Page/Now with Polls!) @ 2016/07/15 04:43:36

Post by: JohnHwangDD

IMO, it's premature to have Pokemon Go parties, because there's no way to trade or fight. It's the opposite of having a LAN party, because you can't interact directly.

OTOH, I stumbled into a 5-stop cluster. That was pretty good for collecting stuff. Even got a Hitmonchan out of it. Unfortunately, the Pinsir I was trying to catch ran away.

They can kind of work since the pokemon are the same for everyone I think, but more like hunting parties though. This game really needs being able to have free battles with other people and trading.

Pokemon Go! (FAQ First Page/Now with Polls!) @ 2016/07/15 14:35:16

That question implies that you are not going to single handedly defeat all the gyms in your area and become their master. If that is the case, I would avoid Mystic.

Usually you don't want to constantly be fighting over gyms- one win out of the way places are better to collect bonuses because they don't switch sides as much. If all you ever see are Mystic or Valor gyms though, it might be beneficial to join up so you can reinforce the gym and collect bonuses that way.

If you've got a few Pokemon that are strong against the type of Pokemon at the gym(and plenty of potions/revives) you can take on the 1000CP Pokemon. You just have to wear them down, and you can take over the gym.

As long As you can beat the first and or second Pokemon you can cut the gym by 1000 rep or whatever and keep doing that till they lose slots. Then you get down to just 1-2 left. Try to use types against the toughest guys.

Gym stuff is fun but I don't have time to work on any. Mostly I've been catching random poke's and hatching eggs hoping for that big score. Finally got a 10k egg but with my luck it'll be something good with negligible CP.

Yay, just got my first Jolteon from an Eevee evolve. My first two were both Vaporeons (and my wife's one try so far was also Vaporeon), so I'm happy to have an electric Pokemon to use against all the Vaporeons I've been seeing. That is the unfortunate side effect of Eevees being so common, that you also see so many of their evolved form around. But I haven't seen too many Jolteons.

I really want a Pikachu, just because (and I didn't know about the starting Pikachu trick). Unfortunately, Fort Worth doesn't seem the best place for them. I saw one online map showing various Pokemon sightings, and Houston is almost yellow with Pikachus, but I guess that's the oil and gas industry for you.

Crap, I need another Eevee then, both the ones I evolved earlier turned into Vaporeon and Flareon. Both in the high 800's.

There was a big Pokemon Go event in downtown Springfield, Missouri tonight. Had a DJ playing music at the square (including the Pokemon theme, lol), lots of restaurants and bars in the area doing specials, like pizza places giving you free stuff based on your trainer level or discounts if you could prove you caught all three starters (my favorite were the Pokemon-themed shots and cocktails, but I was driving, so none for me), and a few THOUSAND people showed up just to walk around and catch Pokemon all night. A local news outlet was reporting that there were about 5,000 people gathered there, but I'm not sure exactly how many of us there were. I left after 1AM, after the second time my phone died (didn't bring a portable charger with me and I was getting a little tired anyway), but there were still plenty of people going at it. So much fun. Lots of people wearing Pokemon shirts, some people even dressed up; saw a couple girls wearing Pikachu costumes and there were more than a couple people dressed as Ash Ketchum, or at least wearing the hat.

Favorite part of the night was this one guy on the sidewalk yelling "THERE'S A MACHOKE!" and watching people flock over to his group in an attempt to catch it, lol. I found a Psyduck at one point, but the game was lagging something terrible and it got away from me. :(

Speaking of which, that was the only bad thing, really. For a while the game was almost impossible to play, it kept lagging and freezing up like crazy. Apparently the servers couldn't handle having that many people in one place all playing the game at the same time. Well, and there was that time a Squirtle ran away from me on the walk back to my car, that was disappointing. Also, there were so many Pokestops all over downtown that my bag actually filled up at one point (and that's even with a bag upgrade), I was chucking potions constantly just so I could keep getting more balls. Thought about trying some of the gyms but I don't have anything that can handle some of the Pokemon these people had defending...I swear I saw a CP1500-something Vaporeon at one of them.

My wife got a 10k and it was an Aerodactyl inside the was pretty beast. As for gyms I'm on the fence with how that works, as far as battles go. I seem to attack when I want to dodge about half the time, that's REEEEEEEALLY annoying.

Anyone else's legs hurt from all the walking they've been doing? lol, I'm about to go out and walk around the neighborhood at fething 3am just to see what I get...famous last words, probably.

Not that I live in a super dangerous town or anything, but still. I know I won't be the only one, either, I saw some other guys out playing when I was driving around a while ago.

Gonna have to try some of the gyms again, I think I finally got a contender. Thinking about naming him the "Exeggcutioner"! XD

Also, there seems to be some conflicting info on how to get the strongest Pokemon. Obviously you want to find the highest level Pokemon you can as a base (the one above was a CP448 Exeggcute if I'm not mistaken, and was pretty far along on the curve), but I was under the impression that powering them up and maxing out their CP level before evolving them was the best way to get stronger Pokemon, and I've seen some people suggest the opposite, that powering them up before evolving is a waste of stardust and you're better off waiting until their final stage and then powering them up, or that doing it this way actually makes them stronger than if you maxed them out earlier. Would my Exeggutor have been even stronger, or had more "potential", if I maxed out that CP448 Exeggcute first, or was evolving it the wise decision?

No, it simply would have used less stardust either way it should have ended up the same.

Also, the Eevee nickname trick might actually work. Named a CP400-something Eevee "Sparky" and got a Jolteon.

The Eevee trick has worked twice now for my wife and i.
Anyway, for the power up before or after evolve thing, i think it's better to evolve first, that way if your evolved Pokemon gets a crappy ability, you can hold out for a better one.

Apparently you get a little bit extra if you wait until after they're evolved before you start powering up.

I haven't given Exeggutor his new name yet, but he's over 1400 now and he's currently guarding a gym...and probably the only Yellow gym in town at the moment. Well, should be guarding it anyway, lame-ass Reds are probably gonna come swarm it before anyone else can come help level up or defend it. I was mainly just screwing around to see if I could actually take over a gym by myself and I did it.

Ok I've had this weird glitch happen 3 times now and wondered if I'm the only one. So far it froze completely twice and this time actually captured the Pokemon. Anyone?

It's a well known glitch. Seems all you can do is wait a little bit to see if its lag, and if it doesn't catch up you'll have to restart the app. The journal will say if you caught it or if it ran away. According to the silph road guys it only happens on the last ball for that encounter as well meaning either you would have caught it or it would have run if you failed.

They also say if you didn't catch it and the journal doesn't mention they ran that on restart that pokemon should pop up again in the same spot in a few secs.

That may be something specific to your phone, or a particular app on your phone. Video capture software, maybe? I don't have anything on my S7 Edge that has icons looking like that.

I thought that too but I have nothing on my phone that had those at all, and like I said this have only showed up during capture of a Pokemon and only 3 times. I'm really only curious what the hell that is lol just one of those things i guess, this game is still incredibly buggy so who knows

My phone did it, too, but my triangles were on the LEFT side of the screen. It didn't break anything, so that was good.

If you are talking about the 3 triangles that are outlines, that appear on the right or left side, those are tracking symbols if you have AR turned on. They show up to show the direction to move your camera to find the Pokemon when it is off the screen.

The next time you catch a Pokemon, move the camera so it no longer has the Pokemon on the screen. They should show up for you.

They shouldn't show up when you have AR turned off. That is just part of the strange freezing, probably caused by connection lag or delay.

So fething salty right now. Saw a CP414 Squirtle earlier. Gave it a razzberry, threw a great ball at it, made a nice throw...busts out immediately and then POOF, runs away. Total bullgak.

Rumor has it Gen 2 will be introduced around December, and legendary Pokemon might end up being released as community events where the three teams have to fight over them, and the winning team gets the Pokemon. So basically if you picked Team Instinct you'll never get fething legendaries ever, then, since pretty much everyone went either Red or Blue.

Team change would pretty much accelerate the steamroller effect, because everybody who's 3rd will switch to 1st. That will force 2nd to switch as well.

I'm just needing the ability to trade and fight with my friends. When they're in the same space as me.

Also, to make it impossible to Transfer a "Favorite" Pokemon - there needs to be a way to "lock" your "good" Pokemons from accidental Transfer.

I just got the weird arrows glitch today as well, but on the left side.

I wouldn't be surprised at the legendaries being community events given what I've heard of Ingress. I'd also like to see team changing, but toss it in the cash shop and make people pay for it. Even though I'd like to stop being what feels like 1 of 3 mystic people here compared to the couple dozen valour and dozen or so instinct that constantly fight over all the gyms.

Interesting thought I had on one of my walks as well is they could have done something like say you mark your favourites (and you get to pick up to 6 or so cause there'd need to be a cap on this) and they could have powered up slowly depending on the distance you've walked with them. Helps out the rural players a bit with few pokemon around at all and helps with the feel of the game, so you're less like this guy just throwing away whatever pokemon you have for the better stronger one you come across.

Cause along with the lack of battling outside of the gym and trading with people, you're missing that feel the series has when you raise your pokemon. I mean at the moment you get your starter at something like 12/13cp, it's trash and you'll just use it for candy later when you catch stronger versions of it to evolve instead.

There is a park across the street from me, so it's not uncommon to see an odd car parked in front of my house, which is almost always a parent with kids.

This weekend there were two teenagers sitting in front of my house, playing on their phones, which was odd. It dawned on me that they may be playing this game.

There are a lot more kids playing with their phones in the park these days (middle and high school aged). Can someone set up some sort of lure or pokemon gym thingy that attracts more pokemen? Perhaps that is what I am seeing.

I've seen several posts on facebook where kids with ASD have really taken to the game, wanting to go outside much more than normal, etc. story

Have to agree. I luckily live in suburbs for both term and home time and pokemon are a dime a dozen. There is even a gym and pokestop outside my house.

When I go to my friends, they live in more rural areas with not many pokestops/gyms and barely a chance to get rare pokemon.

Internet is generally better in built up areas too in my experience.

Yep, you can set a lure for 30 minutes, and it can be seen on the map within a half a click or so. Tends to draw a bunch of people there, especially if there's two nearby stops that can be simultaneously lured. Some people even cruise around the town in a car, looking for lured spots. When the lure stops working after 30 mins, and no-one puts on a fresh one, everybody just scatters.

QUESTION:

What's the small 'bird squeek' noise you hear when walking around? Dunno if it's audible, unless you have headphones on. Something to do with tracker list updating, nearby poke within one step, or something?

Strategy-wise, the best is finding a cluster of spots, 3 or more stacked on top of each other. You can farm a TON of guys very quickly this way. We did this the other night, and it was ridiculous.

But you need to be in a suburban / urban area. No chance in the country.

More likely to deal with people just sitting inside playing the game, that hurts business by wasting space and is understandable. But this is like the opposite way to go about it, just do discounts or things depending on their team or something like other businesses have; would look much better than a big "go away" sign at least.

That is because the signs are written by people who don't understand the game at all, just like media that reports on it. When they posted articles about the guy who walked off the cliff to catch Pokemon or the girl who crossed a busy street to catch them. They blame the game for putting Pokemon in places they have to go.... but what media doesn't understand, if it is on the screen (ie: they knew one was there) then that means they can click on it from where they were. They don't have to go anywhere else. It isn't like there is an arrow saying across the street a Pokemon will spawn or that over the cliff one will spawn.

I'm only just hitting into the 600s now so I tend to take out the 200-300cp gyms if I see them or try to boost up my team's ones if I can. But in general my town and the ones around it have been dominated by red team, so I try to get some blue gyms into it whenever I can.

You can still whittle down a gym filled with 1500CP Pokémon if you have the patience and items. I don't think you even necessarily have to defeat the Pokémon in the gym- just fighting knocks off 100 prestige.

That just my conjecture from what I've observed others fighting gyms I've taken over. I haven't tried taking on a big gym with a smaller Pokémon yet, but I'm hoping to try it out this evening if I get the time.

Gyms are maybe a little too easy to take down. I have solo rolled a level 10 gym to the ground before. (I'd do it more often if pokestops would give more potions and less pokeballs! Pretty decent xp.)

Once you get in the 20's and have some of the good gym fighters near max cp for your level, the only thing stopping you from taking any gym ever is your potion supply. Even some of our top Pokemon in town like a few 2k+ dragonites can't stop me.

I appreciate that they want the game to not stagnate with impregnable gyms, but due to the attacker getting 6 dudes, getting to line up type advantages, and the cpu sucking at playing (doesn't dodge, attacks very slowly,) as well as the fact that the attacker can drain prestige just for beating the low guys and running, and can slowly reduce the gym to just your super high guy and then attack it with 6 'mons...

It just seems a bit overkill in attacker advantage. Pretty much the only way to keep a gym is if it's some out of the way gym that no one ever goes by, and thus no one ever takes a swing at it.

That is probably mostly solo or a couple people, instead of an actual team. The easy part is taking down lower level gyms when they are only level 5 or below. It is unfortunately very hard (if solo) to level a gym to level 10, to fully stock it up. Although a group of 5-10 players (really want 10 so each player leaves one Pokemon) is what you want to take over, level to 10 and then leave.

When you do that, you usually can get 10 Gyms taken over and maxed out and then collect your daily rewards. Then no one cares about those Gyms (at least from that group) until 20 hours have passed so they can collect rewards again.

It works, just with only the same little ones its very hard to hold anything. Especially when most of these red gyms start at 1200 anyway too.

Gyms aren't meant to be kept though. They are meant to change hands. They are only meant to be held long enough for people to collect their max gyms. The AI will be updated and can be slightly effected as some are learning the meta and min/maxing. The majority of players however will not care about it, but there is a good portion that are working on the min/max meta part of it.

A good resource site for tracking skills is the following:

http://pokemongo.gamepress.gg/pokemon-list

This website is a comprehensive database with tons of useful info, including but not limited to breakdowns of the DPS each of the skills carry with them. When you evolve a Pokemon, he re-rolls his skills at random - and it's kind of miserable because the skills are NOT even in power.

Keep in mind that STAB is in effect here (Same Type Attack Bonus) and what it means is if the Pokemon uses a skill that's the same attack type as their inherent type, they get a 25% damage bonus. This means if Gyarados rolls Bite, which deals Dark Damage, he's not actually doing his maximum damage potential on his Basic since he's a Water Pokemon.

Also, while attacking your guy attacks as fast as you can tap / the skill cooldown can refresh, but on defense you will ALWAYS attack at 1.5 sec per attack. What this means is someone with a lower DPS 15 dmg Basic OR a higher DPS 10 dmg Basic (higher because it attacks twice as fast) would actually want the 15 dmg attack on defense, as it means they're maximizing the 1.5 sec attacks. Havinbg a faster 10 dmg attack on defense means nothing to you.

So if you plan on using it for defense, go for the slower bigger dmg attacks, if it's offense use the faster higher DPS attacks. Defense is kind of irrelevant right now anyway so I'd favor focusing on the ones that roll higher DPS attacks for offense.

Now let's talk about the lovely world of IVs...

IVs are invisible variable stats you don't actually see. They represent ATK, DEF and STAM and these IVs can roll a random +15 to each of the stats. This has a direct impact on CP, meaning two fully leveled pokemons can actually have very different final CP values.

How can you easily calculate something you can't see, though? Well, of course redditors have us covered:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wbtIc33K45iU1ScUnkB0PlslJ-eLaJlSZY47sPME2Uk/copy

What this spreadsheet does is give you a calculator to see "how good" your pokemon rolled IVs. Unlike skills, IVs DO carry over from evolution, meaning you could theoretically scout the lower evos of something you plan on making for a very good IV % roll.

Say you have 10 Squirtles and you want to make a Blastoise. In the one hand, your plan might be to auto evolve the one that's leveled up the most to make life easy for you. That's totally fine as a strategy - but if you're min/maxing, you're actually going to want to plug all 10 in to that calculator, find one that's like 90%+ on their IV rolls and go with that one, regardless of how leveled it is. Once evolved, if it rolled good skills he's your keeper. If he rolled bad skills, you may want to give up on him and try again from scratch!

Again, this is a min/max strategy and isn't for everyone. Plenty of people will play the game NEVER knowing about IVs or paying attention to it. I am not one of those people though =P And believe me, I'm pretty bummed at how many 30-50% dudes I have. I had no idea about IVs in the beginning and now that I do, I REGRET A LOT OF MY DECISIONS.

This is all pretty complicated end game stuff, so if it's greek to you and you don't care, just ignore it and keep playing however you want.

Uh who are you talking to? I know this already, and even said it in the post you quoted from. Let me reiterate: I don't want gyms to be impregnable and stagnate the game, I just think it's waaaaaay too much of a cakewalk for the attacker right now. I already know it's intentionally weighted that way, I just think they missed the mark a bit. Getting to line up for type superiority and bringing 6 guys is already plenty advantage. Getting to chip away at the prestige with poor performance attacks and fighting against awful cpu defenders just makes it silly easy.

On a related note, they should really make it where the attacker that cleared a gym gets like...30 seconds to install what he wants in the empty gym first before other people are given the option. I see a lot of people (mystics especially) just wait until you clear the gym and instantly insert another defender before the attacker has even gotten to click back into the gym menu. That seems like less than sporting technique to me.

And he actually says "Pikachu!", too, instead of making the Gameboy-esque noises that everyone else makes. Which I guess is also kinda cute.

Team Instinct has been doing some work the past few days. Whenever I get off work there's at least like 4-5 gyms taken over, so I've been going to each one and either training or just stuffing a Pokemon right in there and collecting a gym bonus. Got 2000 stardust and 40 coins today.

I also just hit trainer level 20, and holy gak I feel like I've wasted everything so far, lol. One of the first Pokemon I found after I leveled up was a CP600+ Eevee. That'll turn into something nice I'm sure, but I'm not really sure what to evolve it into. I have two Jolteons, one Vaporeon and one Flareon. I have another CP500+ Eevee and exactly 50 candy so I can get two more big ones but I dunno what to make them into. None of the ones I have right now are all that impressive, my strongest one is a CP1008 Jolteon that only has like 76hp, the other three are mid-800s.

Vaporeon and Flareon would be good choices then cause you already have a Jolteon over 1k.

This server issue is getting annoying. Last night I launched my only lucky egg ready to mass evolve and the server went down for the whole night. Super pissed.

Do you think its worth complaining to get my egg back? Would that even work or is it just the worst luck?

Get a Vaporeon when you can. It's obviously more powerful than the other two eeveelutions.

If you want to be a contender in the gym scene, vaporeons all day every day. They attack fast, and have almost snorlax-levels of hp, double what the other eevee-lutions have. Also among the top tier gym fighter Pokemon, there aren't any electric types, and the only high tier grass type usually has a psychic primary attack. (Exeggcutor) Also also being an eeveelution means it's hilariously more common than the other top tier gym fighters like snorlax, dragonite, exegg, lapras, etc.

I keep a first string of 3 2k vaporeons that get powered up every level first thing.

Could try, but I don't think you'll get anything back from it. There's been a ton of people complaining about incense and lucky eggs being eaten like that.

I was just wondering the other day if there was a "max" CP or if it just kept going and going, and you'd eventually see people with Pokemon in the 4k-5k+ level or something crazy like that.

And yet I bet he owns a smart phone. Does he not realize that ability has been there for years.

Pokemon Go doesn't actually bring anything new to the ability to track and monitor that doesn't already exist. The only thing is turning location, but Facebook and other companies have already had the ability to use location to tailor ads to you on your phone. There isn't anything else that Pokemon Go does that other apps and companies don't already provide.

Now I can understand if these things weren't already possible and easier done already, but they are so why would they use Pokemon Go.

Try walking by a pond or river with an Incense on. Incense in general seems to attract rarer Pokémon for me.

But you should be nabbing every pidgey you see to speed the leveling process.

You actually want those. Collect a lot of them. Then use a Lucky Egg, trade and evolve your way up your levels. There is a spreadsheet or webpage that lets you put in how many X Pokemon you have, candies and it'll tell you how many to transfer to professor so you evolve your best and the exp you'd get.

Are you just going around the neighborhood or going to actually different areas? Pokemon are supposed to spawn based on time and locations. Not all of them are fully set that way but ideally some spawn in Industrial areas, others in Rural, others along waterfronts, etc. We hit the community college and caught different stuff than what was at the Zoo vs what was along the waterfront downtown.

I walk to and from the city centre and also branch out into rural suburbs. Caught a Koffing, Gastly and Staryu on the way back which was nice.
Shall keep on catching dem pidgeys for the levels. I have a fair few Eevees as well which is cool I guess. A lot of my rare pokemon have been eggs ahaha.

Grinding the quick evolves is the fastest way to rank up.
I'll throw on an incense and walk through the local area that's packed with normals.
An hour's walk normally gets me around 15 evolutions, so with an egg, 15k XP.

If you want something rare though, find a stop and throw on a module and incense, rare spawns seem to be on the half hour and the hour.
Been using that method for farming dratini and Charmander so far.

Still trying to find a quick way to farm magikarp though as I've got 280 candy and still need another 120.
Far too slow as it is.

Went to a downtown riverbank spot where the kiddies are keeping 2-3 lures up constantly, got about 15 magicarps in less than an hour. Riverbanks seem to be the best place for water-type farming, even better than beaches.

It seems to me that most spawn points have a small collection of different pokemon that can spawn, 10 different ones or so, with different spawn probablilites. However, seems to be difficult to tell which spawn point has most pokemon spawning - I have a couple of leaf piles nearby that never seem to give me anything.

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but this site gives a pretty good estimate of pokemon currently wild spawned.

https://pokevision.com/

I've seen some errors, but it seems mostly to be caused when the pokemon gets caught or I'm not high enough level to see it.

It also seems distance has some variance. But it seems pretty close. Especially since the pokemon-radar (dare I say... pokedar?) isn't working great.

So, I feel this game hates me recently.

I found a level 320 Dragonair, and after using an Ultra Ball and a Razz berry, he broke free in one go and fled.

Then I found a level 600 Charmeleon, same issue.

Then to add insult to injury, I tried catching a level 30 Magikarp, that in turn broke lose in one go and fled.

My courage will pull me through, though, right?

Well we know what the team leaders look like, finally.

A Pokémon GO panel at San Diego Comic-Con featuring Niantic CEO John Hanke has revealed some tidbits about the game.
Most notably, the panel revealed the designs of the leaders of each of the three team leaders in the game. Currently, only their silhouettes appear in the games. Hanke hinted that the reason for this was that the team leaders' designs were not ready when the game was released.
As he has stated in recent interviews, Hanke reiterated that trading is currently being worked on, and the next feature Niantic intends to add to the game. However, he also mentioned that they didn't want to add it to the game until the servers could handle it.
Hanke mentioned that Niantic is considering enhancements for PokéStops in the same vein as Lure Modules. One example he gave was turning PokéStops into Pokémon Centers.
Additionally, Hanke confirmed that it is possible to influence Eevee's evolution using its nickname, but did not elaborate on how. Fans had already discovered that nicknaming Eevee after the Eevee brothers will cause it to evolve into the corresponding evolution, but Niantic had not previously acknowledged this.
Hanke also hinted that there are other Easter eggs in the games that players had not yet discovered.
Contrary to rumors beforehand, no special Pokémon were available at the panel.

http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_GO_panel_at_SDCC_reveals_team_leaders,_more

So the eevee naming method is also confirmed officially too.

Ugh...the whole Eevee naming thing threw me off. I thought you only had one chance in general to use the naming method to get what you wanted, so I went with a Vaporeon. Two more Eevee evolutions ended up as Vaporeons, and now I see I could have gotten a Jolteon and a Flareon using the naming trick. Oh well, next ones going to be a Flareon. I don't have a good fire type yet.

Has anyone experienced a bug/glitch where an egg will hatch but it won't tell you it hatched? I 'lost' an egg from my screen today, and when I was transferring later on I noticed I had a Horsea I never had before and like 30 Horsea candy, so obviously I had one hatch but it didn't tell me, nor did the hatching screen pop up. Weird.

I have had it happen where I was walking and it hatched or I didn't notice that it hatched through other means. It usually happens if it was going to hatch when my game locked up. If you notice the egg gone, just look at your Pokemon by recent and you should be able to easily identify what was hatched.

This has been happening to me a lot, as well. I was so mad when I thought my eggs disappeared, but they don't. As noted, you do get your hatch, it just shows in your Pokemon list. I'm kinda baffled that it doesn't show in the journal... but anyway, be assured, all your incu-walking is not in vain!

I have patchy cell signal at work (and 3 pokestops), so sometimes I get credit for walking as my phone tries to figure out where I am when I'm sitting at my desk... I figure it balances out with all the walking I *don't* get credit for when I have no signal, at all. This is when I usually get the weird updates with eggs disappearing/autohatching, or whatever they do.

Did they fix the damn tracking bug? I swear the tracker has been broken damn near the entire time the game's been out. I started playing on the 9th and I remember this thing being broken longer than it worked, anyway.

Really irritating since I'm pretty sure I was near a Squirtle nest earlier, saw no less than four of the little bastards on the radar, yet with no idea if I'm going in the right direction or not trying to track it down was pointless. Never even saw one pop up.

I'm not even bothering with the IV crap, just looking for the highest CP's I can and hoping for the best. It's hard enough finding anything good as it is, I'm not gonna start throwing even more Pokemon away just because they aren't absolutely perfect. I've used a CP calculator just for the sake of curiosity but that's about as far as I'm gonna go.

Pokémon with better IVs will naturally have a higher CP anyway, so you're not really missing anything.

Tracking bug is still not fixed. I've taken to just remembering spawning points to return to later.

Not always, when putting it into a calc, if it's unsure it's either X level with really good IVs, or X+1 with terrible IVs normally (i.e. a lvl 13 with ~14s in all stats or a lvl 14 with a 9 and 2 6s)

Thankfully the one I used was able to refine my Shellder when it involved. I took a big risk with it's Iv's ranging from 96 to 50% but thankfully it was the 96%.

Thankful it's good, because that would have been a large waste. I know why I took the risk though, I needed it for my Pokedex and the wild one I stumbled across earlier ran away. Got to catch like 35 Exeggcutes and rack up KM on my 10k egg though, was cool.

Haven't seen it mentioned, but should be a somewhat decent patch out there to download now.
The first major patch has been released for Pokémon GO, for both iOS and Android. While other patches have been released, they so far have only included minor changes. This patch brings the game up to version 0.31.0 (labelled version 1.1.0 in the App Store).
The most notable change is that now players can customize their avatar from the profile screen. Additionally, footprints for nearby Pokémon (which have not been functional for a few weeks) have been entirely removed.
Some Medals now have unique icons, rather than all Medals of the same rank using the same image. There have also been some changes to the layout of the Pokémon summary screen. This now prevents the player from transferring a Pokémon that is favorited.
Furthermore, some Gym animations and battle damage calculations have been modified in unspecified ways.
The patch notes also mention that some move powers have been updated, although this is actually a server-side update that was applied yesterday.

http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/First_major_Pok%C3%A9mon_GO_patch_released

-Avatars can now be re-customized from the Trainer profile screen
-Adjusted battle move damage values for some Pokémon
-Refined certain Gym animations
-Improved memory issues
-Removed footprints of nearby Pokémon
-Modified battle damage calculation
-Various bug fixes during wild Pokémon encounter
-Updates to the Pokémon details screen
-Updated achievement medal images
-Fixed issues with displaying certain map features
-Minor text fixes

>removed foot prints of nearby pokemon
I'm not sure if this means they're going to actually get to fixing tracking or not.

What's especially annoying to me is they have appeared to have killed all 3rd party tracking services too. After the 3 step bug happened I found pokevision.com to be extremely helpful. Now we're all basically just wandering around blindly hoping to find a Pokemon we'd like. I have a 779cp 90% Iv snorlax, and a 172CP 87% Iv lapras id really like to power up but will probably never be able too.

They also apparently removed the xp bonuses for direct throws. I guess people were leveling up to quick so they are looking for ways to slow level grinds down even further, i.e. make it harder to find Pokemon, reduce or eliminate XP, removing pokestops, "re-balancing" attacks. Some of the UI changes, especially the one for transfer are puzzling as was the choice of focus for development resources, such as the aesthetics on medals and the avatar.

All of it seems to be emblematic of a developer out of touch with it's customers.

It's review score on the app store has gone down significantly since the update dropped.

I have mixed feelings about the 3rd party tracking tools, but again, I think the overall goal is to slow the grind. I think also that the developer was embarrassed by how 3rd parties were more successful at developing effective tools that highlighted the problems with the app.

They have said they want to improve tracking and that the main reason for the 3-paw bug is because of server strain caused by 3rd party sites accessing Niantic servers.

I believe this is the 1st step in the redesign of how Pokemon tracking and possibly spawns are done. They removed essentially the two-way communication for steps which has essentially broke 3rd party websites. Most likely that meant paws would also not work in phones, hence they removed them. Locations for the Pokemon still update, but that is through a different method and not as accurate as the paws was.

Now they'll have to redo how tracking was implemented. To be fair Ingress had something similar happen as well in terms of interfaces with 3rd party websites used to track information for portals.

If you also notice the google placement map was removed. On the plus side transferring Pokemon to the professor now happens much faster that you don't have to wait for a Google map to load, then scroll to transfer, it is pretty much quick button clicking now. Favorites also prevents transferring to the professor properly now as well.

I could be wrong, but it sure seems like low-level Pokemon now dodge, escape and even run away much more often. I'm going through many more Pokeballs these days...which is probably an intentional deci$ion by Niantic.

There was an XP bonus for straight throws? Granted, I only throw curveballs, but I can see why they removed that bonus. Far too easy to do.

There was XP bonus for nice and great hits but not for straight throws in general. I haven't really payed attention but supposedly curveballs and nice/great hits don't give bonuses to catch% now either.

I started with curve, but now, that's basically impossible to land the hit, so it's straight throws only. Even then, it's infuriating how many balls break.

*Changed nest types so people can't catch their favorite pokemon.
*Made pokemon break out of balls much more frequent.
*Made Pokemon flee much more frequent.
*Made it harder to actually find wild pokemon without stumbling over them.
*Without endless piles of easily caught trash, EXP growth is now non-existant as no more lucky egg pidgey evolve spam
*No more throwing skillful balls for EXP.
*All Dratini Locations are now Eevee, making it basically an egg hatch only pokemon.

I get it. People were getting too much with pokevision. But there is NOTHING WRONG with being able to WANT to actually catch pokemon opposed to stumble over them.

This morning I had a sqirtle on my radar. as I walked to the corner, it became closer and closer. It was my CLOSEST pokemon on my radar. From the corner, I walked in all 4 compass directions and every direction made squirtle get FARTHER. I was trying to play the game as intended and there simply was no possible way to catch the squirtle or even attempt to find him outside dumb luck.

They know the spawn POINTS and what time they spawn. They never change location or time, simply what it is. CACHE THE CRAP out of that information and have it appear as grass in the game. Let people walk to places that 'hey, the pokemon is here, walk to it to see what it is'.

Is that too much to ask? I will gladly explore and not know types and rely on social media 'hey, did you know gak spawns here' talk as long as the game made it actual possible to find the stuff near by.

The attack balances was a good move... But ruined by the attempt to kill EXP growth and tracking.

I'm still getting bonus exp on curve balls, but I haven't noticed nice/great/excellent bonuses either way. When I catch a few tonight I'll try to pay more attention.

I haven't heard anything about Curves and Nice/Great/Excellent no longer making it easier to catch the Pokémon.

Also: 12 candies to evolve pokemon spawn less, 25 to evolve spawn more and are harder to catch. 200cp ratattas which used to be green and catch with a single ball now take 4-6 balls and flee a ton while having an orange ring. And I am level 22.

Seems like a lot was done to try to curb the lucky egg + evolve a bunch of trash technique by making those 12 candy pokemon much less frequent and other pokemon harder to catch in general.

The stealth patches are numerous.

Also, a small patch today to bury the bad reviews on the app store.

I think the 12 candy spawn stuff is anecdotal I've caught exactly as many pidgeys/weedles today as I have for the last week(16 of both so far). Also the update they did today actually made the bad reviews shine WORSE, because most of us who left 1 star reviews made sure to go back and re-up ours while the 5 stars appear to not have done so.

I had some piddly Spearow escape from two regular balls and a great ball and then flee this morning. Do they think this is fun? I imagine they don't care so long as pokeball sales are up, but that's how you lose players.

FWIW, I also seem to be seeing more low-level pokemon than ever, even as they've gotten much harder to catch. I'm getting more clusters of 2 and 3 at a time.

Can also add my anecdotal experience that Pokemon, especially low CP Pokemon are running/breaking balls more frequently.

Combined with the other changes, IMHO it all adds up to a concerted effort by Niantic to slow xp / increase the grind. I think it is fair to say that Niantic is not earning any good will and seems to be more into spin and damage control than on actually trying to deliver what they advertised.

Suffice to say that I am not spending any more money on this app until I see a more positive direction.

If you have a local area filled with PokéStops you shouldn't ever have to spend money on pokéballs. We have a Civil War battlefield about 20 miles from the house, and the wife and I drive by there every few days to easily farm 300+ pokéballs.

If only super, hyper, and Max potions had a better drop rate.

That's kind of the point...Niantic is counting on most people not having that setup. If you're in a very rural area without historical stuff, it's become almost pay-to-play with how many more balls you spend to catch even low CP Pokemon.

I am actually in a very rural area. The closest cluster of PokéStops is in town about 15 minutes away. The biggest "city" is about an hour. Around my house is nothing for miles. I suppose it's luck of the draw that the battlefield is only about a 20 minute drive.

The game has kind of meandered from fun all the time to love/hate for me. I can't be bothered to go out of my way anymore now that the shiny newness has worn off, but it can still be entertaining.

I've noticed a bit more trouble with some pokemon, sometimes 6 balls sometimes they flee... but I dunno today didn't seem any worse than before really. Noticing a tad more variety.

What we really need is more features to actually play with. The basics of catching and collecting Pokemon, and battle gyms is certainly enough to drive the game for a few weeks. But more than that is needed for player retention. Trading between players. Battles between players. Actual events. Etc.

I'm going to have to out a hold on my Pokemon adventure, but only because running around for rare Pokemon has finally taken it's toll on my legs and feet. At least I've lost a fair bit of weight for it. About 4.6 km a day on average since I started, but I've only really been taking it seriously when I got to level 10, so that skews the results in favour of the most recent days I ran around town.

Slowly grinding away at the moment.
1 more squirtle and I can evolve my wartortle into a blastoise at last.
Not far of dragonite either.

Helps me alot being with a competitive group of friends though as it drives me alot more.

Still struggling to find bulbasaur though, had 2 so far and both through eggs.
Also in dire need of lapras candy as I've used what I had and can't push him over 2200 CP now.

The levels get steep very quickly over 20 though, and I find myself saving up Pokemon for a week then bulk evolving with a lucky egg.

Have found that with the last update its alot harder to hit or catch things and that the GPS actually works properly now.
So atleast I'm not walking 13k to hatch a 10k egg.

I have been walking 5-10k a day since this game launched July 7th. I have been hitting parks, hunting nests and active in my local area's subreddit and collecting data. I have a spawn point on my house which before the patch did a pidgey/weedle every hour, on the :29. Now it is different stuff, Ratatta/Paras. With the NESTs getting intentionally rotated, they might just have reseeded all the spawns.

This is my life right now.

Pretty much me too, level 18 and can't find Pidgey's to put in the EXP blender.

Did myself no favours today running around for two Eevees and a Kingler. Kingler was OK with a potential 84% for IVs, but sadly didn't meet the standard set by my 96% Cloyster, 98% Eevee and my newly acquired 96% or 98% Slowpoke.

Main concern for Eevee and Slowpoke are the moves that their evolutions get. Really hoping Niantic implement some way of changing moves incase I end up with bad draws.

Which site are you using to calculate EVs?

I'm not having too hard a time catching dudes, I've seen some cp300 ratatas go quietly, and evees are generally very complacent. Still seeing enough pidgy to stockpile them for xp.

I'm sorry, what was "confusing" about how the tracking worked before? I understood it perfectly after a few minutes of play. The only thing that might have been "confusing" was when it fething glitched out for weeks and showed everything at three steps, with the list in the wrong order. Trying to pull one over on people with that, obviously.

This is a red herring. 3rd party apps development accelerated once the tracking feature built into Pokemon Go turned out to be broken. It's not the 3rd party developers fault that they were able to build and support more effective tools than Niantic, and that correspondingly their usage increased exponentially once people realized there was an improved solution.

It's become increasingly clear that Niantic oversold the game features, provided poor balance, and totally mis-forecasted XP leveling and player behavior.

It will be interesting to see what happens once school resume how much of a drop off occurs.

Pokemon Go! (FAQ First Page/Now with Polls!) @ 2016/08/03 17:43:43

Yeah, I'm not saying that the 3rd party apps are completely to blame, naintic way oversold the features, then 3rd parties provided a solution to do what people wanted, and naintic's game couldn't handle it all.

Obvious solution was to not build gak and expect it to just sneak through, especially in a game series like pokemon which has a huge fan base.

Alright mini poll time, are you guys really having a horrible time catching Pokemon now? It seemed like things were much worse after the last update and I'll admit it took 10 balls and then a berry+great ball to finally land a cp450 goldeen earlier today, but overall I'm noticing pretty normal or even improved results. After that goldeen I got two cp300+ ratatas and a cp500ish pidgeotto on the first throw no berries. I've had several other critters put up no fight at all and most have been fairly reasonable.

So I dunno I'm not noticing as much of an issue as I did that first afternoon. They jump and growl/posture/invulnerable-to-pokeballs more often but they don't seem much worse to keep overall.

How about you guys?

Also... did they change the weight of the ball? Curve balls for me seem to fly a lot differently, though I'm adjusting.

Well, it's more money for them I guess. It makes sense to release it in Brazil because of the Olympics, might have a larger gathering of PGO players. Once every country has it, hopefully then they'll work on existing problems before implementing new features. My scanner no longer works due to the API being changed by Niantic, so I only hope that they implement some sort of tracking device soon so that I'm not running around like a headless chicken.

I am 23, and curveballs seem mandatory now. I didnt think they impacted catch rate so I went for accuracy over curve... But straight throws caused escapes, and escapes cause flees.

You are better missing twice with a curve than escaping twice with a straight as it will have a higher chance of a flee.

Once you get back to curves with tiny circle, my catch rate returned to pre-patch levels with no more than 1-2 balls per poke. (even hard ones)

I think this was response to the android auto-throws which did straight throws. Basically Curve ball or expect to have a bad time.
