“The Expanse holds treasures beyond anything even a Rogue Trader can imagine. Sometimes the cost of acquiring such treasure is madness and death. I am willing to pay such a price.”
–Rogue Trader Hadarak Fel

A powerful force has awakened from its slumber somewhere deep within the Hecaton Rifts, and if left unchecked it will spell certain doom for the denizens of nearby sectors. As this ancient evil threatens to destroy both the Koronos Expanse and the Calixis Sector, can you and your fellow Explorers learn the truth of its mysterious origins?

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Fallen Suns, the third and final instalment in The Warpstorm Trilogy for Rogue Trader! A lost Eldar Craftworld has begun a dark voyage of death and disaster, and only the Rogue Traders of the Koronus Expanse stand in the way of its rampage. Journey into a perilous realm of madness and ancient hate; from Footfall to the Serpent’s Cradle and beyond, you must make common cause with allies old and new if they are to survive. The fate of the Koronus Expanse hangs in the balance!

Fallen Suns can be played as a standalone adventure, or as part of the gripping series of adventures that began with the events of The Frozen Reaches and continued through Citadel of Skulls.

The Final Culmination

In The Frozen Reaches, you and your fellow Explorers assisted the beleaguered world of Damaris in its fight against the Ork Warlord Snokgritz (an attack that suggested far darker forces at work). Then, in Citadel of Skulls, your hunt for answers brought you to the world of an infamous Chaos-blessed pirate lord. In Fallen Suns, these ominous events will culminate in an adventure that will shape the future of the Koronus Expanse.

The heretic fleet of the Faceless Lord seeks to claim the Craftworld’s power...can you survive the exciting conclusion to The Warpstorm Trilogy? Keep checking back for more, and look for Fallen Suns at your local game store in the fourth quarter of 2011!

Not the RT news I was expecting but I'm not complaining.

I wonder how much an Eldar slave would net us if we sold it to rich nobles.

I'm guessing that the craftworld in question is already "broken". And the trick is to ensure that whatever's left of it doesn't take down the entire sector when it "crashes".

Depends.

Does the noble know that buying said slave is likely to result in a late night visit from a Harlequin troupe that ends in a quick trip (but long stay!) to Commoragh?

There's a bit of a difference with the 'remains of the honored dead'...and an Eldar who can escape at a later date.

Yes, but you know how things are with family. If you put bubble gum in your sibling's hair, that's all just fun and games! But when someone who isn't part of the family does it, they must die!

It's... out?

I wonder when contributor copies get sent out then.

Anyway, let's ignore that for the moment and look at some more Black Crusade news, this time a fairly important one - mixing the four games!

FFG wrote: Versatility in Chaos
Using Black Crusade with other Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay titles

“While vile mutants still draw breath, there can be no peace. While obscene heretics’ hearts still beat, there can be no respite. While faithless traitors still live, there can be no forgiveness."
– Verse I of XXV of the Silver Skulls Catechism of Hate

Although Black Crusade is an exciting game in its own right, it also exists amongst an entire collection of Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay game lines. This puts Black Crusade in the unique position of being the only game amongst Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay that allows you to play the Imperium’s adversaries, making it an invaluable source of the deadliest adversaries the Imperium of Man could ever face.

With Black Crusade’s classless Human and Chaos Space Marine character generation system (based on earned experience points), GMs can build tailor-made opponents for their gaming groups. The GM can “scale” his adversaries to his players by matching the adversaries to his players’ experience, and can build Chaos Space Marine or Human adversaries depending on whether their group is playing Deathwatch, Rogue Trader, or Dark Heresy. GMs can even use the Archetypes presented in Black Crusade to create even more tailor-made opponents. A Dark Heresy Acolyte cell might respond well to a subversive Apostate as a nemesis, while a Deathwatch Kill-Team might be called on to hunt down a dangerous Chaos Space Marine Sorcerer.

In addition, Black Crusade provides scores of interesting powers, abilities, and equipment found nowhere else in Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay. From unique psychic powers with a Chaos theme to dangerous Daemon weapons, the GM has no end of choices when he wants to make a nemesis his players won’t soon forget.

Cross-Game Compatibility

The creation of powerful adversaries to use with other game lines is just one way that Black Crusade ties in with the other Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay game lines. In fact, when writing the game we came up with enough suggestions and tips that we decide to devote an entire section of the Game Master’s chapter in the core rulebook to that very topic.

One idea this section explores is that Black Crusade doesn’t just offer new material for the other Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay titles; the other titles have plenty to offer Black Crusade as well. Take Dark Heresy, for example. Books like The Radical’s Handbook and Disciples of the Dark Gods detail many plots by Chaos cults, subversive factions, and radical elements of the Inquisition. Now, by combining this information with Black Crusade, the players can take part in these adventures from the other side. They can help the Pale Throng overthrow the Ologarchs of Tranch, corrupt and bring down the radical Oblationists, and realize the convoluted plans of the Brotherhood of the Horned Darkness. Or if Rogue Trader is more a group’s style, merging the two books can be a perfect way to run a pirate warship out of the cursed world of Iniquity.

Finally, this section discusses the rules changes between Black Crusade and other game lines. Although the four games are still completely compatible, Black Crusade did make some adjustments and updates to the rules set. Some of these were to make the mechanics match the game’s theme, others were means of streamlining and improving gameplay. The Game Master chapter in Black Crusade outlines these changes clearly and concisely. That way when GMs and players are using different Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay game lines together, they know exactly what might be different. More importantly, the section discusses how to merge any differences between rules sets in simple and straightforward ways.

How will you combine your Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay campaign? Discuss below or on our forums, and look for Black Crusade on store shelves later this quarter!

I think this is quite important as there are quite a number of (very necessary) changes to the Black Crusade rules compared to the other three games. Anyone who looks over the demo adventure FFG put out for Free RPG Day can see some of the differences right away (the way Standard and Multiple Attacks work, the way Unnatural Characteristics work, the fact that PC's now have Weapon Skill and Ballistic Skill Bonuses, and so on), so I'm glad the GM section will go over this in some detail to reconcile the differences between BC and the other three games. Good work FFG!

And speaking of Church of the Damned...

FFG wrote:The Church of the Damned is Now on Sale
Pick up part two of The Apostacy Gambit, a Dark Heresy Campaign

Praise be that I have seen a glimpse of such holiness! Finally, life holds no more mysteries for me.
–Pilgrim outside the gates of the Cathedral of Illumination

The Church of the Damned, an adventure for Dark Heresy, is now on sale at your local retailer and on our webstore! Investigating corruption within the Ecclesiarchy itself is as delicate as it is dangerous, but when an influential leader is suspected of heresy, you and your fellow Acolytes will uncover an ever-deepening conspiracy that could spell the end of the entire Calixis Sector...

The Church of the Damned is the second adventure in The Apostasy Gambit, a Dark Heresy campaign that takes a cell of Acolytes from investigating the tragic history of a warped Cathedral to crusading against a conspiracy within one of the Imperium’s most vaunted organisations. While The Church of the Damned continues the events started in The Black Sepulchre, it also includes starting points to be played on its own or as part of your own campaign.

In the name of the Emperor

Dark Heresy’s lead developer took the time to share his thoughts about The Church of the Damned, and how it seamlessly ties in to the events depicted in Black Sepulchre:

Dark Heresy is a game of investigation, and while there is plenty of action to be had, the core experience is one of mystery and conspiracy. The Church of the Damned sees the Acolytes embracing that role and leading an investigation into the heart of one of the Imperium’s most powerful organizations. Witnesses must be questioned, information researched, and crime scenes examined.

Of course, there is a good deal of combat too, with a variety of new and familiar foes. Hair raising, skin of your teeth, knock down, drag out combat. This may be the deadliest adventure we’ve ever written. Don’t expect to save the entire Calixis Sector and come away with all your fate points... or limbs!

The Maledictor’s Hand, a secret group of fanatical extremists, manipulates the Imperium from the shadows. You and your fellow Acolytes must hurry to stop their dark plot before it’s too late. But who can you trust?

Head to your local retailer and pick up your copy of The Church of the Damned today!

Now that this book is out I can actually talk a bit about it. I really like this book, and was lucky enough to be asked to write a (very) small part of it. The first chapter of the book, set within a cathedral, has a lot of great characters and a fair amount of investigation and even a little combat. There are some interesting ‘activities’ for the players to take part in, from identifying relics to performing an exorcism!! The book even has, I swear, the 40K version of Dr. Cox from Scrubs. The second chapter is something I really want to play with my group. It has such a Fallout-y feel to it being set within a shanty village inside an Underhive, and is complete with local bars, gangs, hidden agendas, ancient technology and dark conspiracies.

It’s not all roses though, as the third chapter is, in my mind, a little too linear. You’ll see it when your copies arrive (I assume you’ve all got copies ordered, yes? ). That’s not to say it’s bad – there are some interesting encounters including one mind-bending one that’s easily one of the most inventive I’ve read in ages. And, as you could probably gather from the awesome front cover of the book, you get to fight a Penitent Engine.

Anyway, yes, Church of the Damned should be a lot of fun, has a number of interesting encounters, and has a story that actually changes the status quo of the Calixis sector. I can’t wait to see how it ends in the next book.

[EDIT]: On a side note - can the first person here who gets Church of the Damned please PM me when you get it. Thanks!

Church of the Damned was in fact awaiting me when I got home tonight, which is nice.

Only had a brief read through, a skim as t'were of a few sections, but my initial impressions are favourable. It certainly seems much more fluid and logical with regards to its structure.

The section dealing with some gangs is cool and offers a good amount of options to resolve things, I've noticed several sections which will enable different classes to do things in different ways, and the end game.. well... yes. me like !

Sorry for the delay in reporting guys. Internet access (and time to access the internet) is rather limited during the course of the convention. The seminar was pretty well attended, so I'm surprised that nobody else has offered any comments to this point.

The seminar was presented by:
Mack Martin (Dark Heresy Developer)
Sam Stewart (Black Crusade Developer)
Tim Huckleberry (Rogue Trader Developer)
Andrew Fischer (Deathwatch Developer)
Ross Watson (Sr. 40K RPG Developer)
Andrea Gausman (Freelancer)
John Dunn (Freelancer, aka, me)

There were, essentially, no surprises. Similarly, there were no announcements of books that had not been previously discussed. FFG's standard policy of "Fantasy Flight Games does not speculate on unreleased products" was in full effect. It was also mentioned many, many times, during the course of the Q&A. They did, however, reaffirm the fact that GW is happy with their performance and that they plan to support all lines for an extended time. There certainly are future products coming for all of the lines.

Mack covered the releases over the past year in Dark Heresy. The only unreleased book that was covered was to say that there would be a third book in the Apostasy Gambit trilogy. Church of the Damned was the new release for the show.
Tim talked about Rogue Trader. As with Mack's presentation, he mentioned Fallen Suns, the third book in the Warpstorm Trilogy. No other unreleased books were covered. Citadel of Skulls was the new release for the show.
Andrew discussed Deathwatch. Achilus Assault, which was at the show (probably a pre-release) was the newest book covered in the presentation.
Sam went over the core rules for Black Crusade as well as the GM's kit, both of which were available at the show.

After that, we went to Q&A. The questiosn that I specifically recall were mostly about BC, and covered things that have seen a lot of discussion here and on the FFG forums. These were things like character balance, game system compatibility, and others. Many folks asked many questions about future plans, and all received the stock answer of no speculation.

The entire presentation was recorded, but I don't know if the video folks have plans to do anything with that tape (or if there might have been technical issues with the recording. None of us were mic'd).

I suspect that these aren't the answers that many folks might want to hear. I wish I could offer something more informative, but I cannot. The bottom line is - if you like what you've seen so far, expect to see more work of the same caliber in the future. All of us who have worked on the games love the properties and love having the opportunity to work with them.

Thanks for that Mr. Dunn, always good to get some clarification.

.. is a little disappointing that w don't get any sudden BIG REVEAL or news, but it's understandable.

.. and they're generally quite cool with what thye tell us about forthcoming releases anyway, so we'll let them off.

Good to hear there is more to come, personally I'd be happy if RT got a little bit more lovin and there's a few 1st Founding/notable Astartes chapters that would seem worthy of expansion upon...

.. but FFG have been golden so far so I've every faith.

Glad to hear things are well, suspected as much after GW confirmed the renewal of the license in their annual report.

Even gladder to hear that people will continue to have steady work coming their way too

Completely forgot this until I saw your posting. The last slide that Andrew showed during the Deathwatch portion was, if my memory serves, a BC Marine with a Salamanders Shoulder Pad. I'm not under any NDA on this one - I absolutely have no insider knowledge about what that might have foreshadowed. Please feel free to speculate.

Last year's Profit and Plunder previewed Hostile Acquisitions and Xenos Compendium, which both remain unreleased. I can comfortably say that fans of RT can continue to look forward to both of those products, even if they may not make the dates originally presented in that resource.

Agreed... the rites of battle tables are fairly inclusive although they can easily be minmaxed by players so be careful. Just like with the 4th edition 40k marine chapter rules in the old vanilla codex, the "disadvantages" can be gamed. My DW campaign is on indefinite hiatus at the moment but I used to allow custom chapters randomly rolled by the player (with one reroll for the whole process) or made up by the GMs in a take-it-or-leave-it fashion.

Dark Heresy - Rogue Trader - Death Watch - Black Crusade - Only War news and rumours @ 2011/08/08 23:43:14

Post by: btemple0

Custom chapters generally are only made by me as needed in my games, players get to take it or leave it. After my group cracked Rites of battle open and started to gripe and moan that they could not take some of the options, I took the book back, so this group only has the core book to play out of.

Endtransmissions is somewhat fair IIRC: Endtransmission's Red Scorpions

I enjoyed the book, just from the title expected 100% xenos. I haven't had any substantial problems with the FFG books, they're great, so this one criticism, it should be emphasized as being a very tiny issue.

There's a variety of stuff in Creatures Anathema. Even Eldar Dire Avengers get a listing.

As for using them against marines, it depends a lot on the creature in question. Different creatures will have different power levels, and many of them are designed to be able to battle an entire group of acolytes solo. In such cases, a small pack of them could pose a definite challenge to a marine kill-team. Also, some of the creatures in the book are just plain strange. Marines will have trouble with them simply because of how alien they are.

Lots of things. D'ya really want me to list them all?

Miss Dee wrote:And how do you boost them to be uses on Marines / Chaos Marines?

There are a few things you can do:

1. Give them Unnatural Characteristics. Strength and Toughness are good starts, but Agility also works for very fast things.
2. Double their wounds (not always applicable).
3. Use them in Hordes, and give them Horde Traits.

And the next in the Warpstorm Trilogy has arrived...

FFG wrote:The Pirate Lord's Inner Sanctum
Citadel of Skulls, a Rogue Trader adventure, is now available!

He’s a madman, hell bent on scourging the Expanse of those with the will to stand up to him. Even his name elicits the sign of the Aquila and prayers to the God–Emperor."
–Darius Xerxes, Helmsman (referring to Karrad Vall)

A great beast has awakened from beyond the edges of the Koronus Expanse, hungering to fulfil its dark purpose. Before you and your fellow Explorers can attempt to seek it out and ultimately destroy it, you must uncover what and where it is. Finding the answer is a nearly impossible undertaking, pitting you against an infamous pirate lord blessed by Chaos.

Citadel of Skulls, the second adventure in The Warpstorm Trilogy for Rogue Trader, is now on sale at your local retailer and on our webstore! On the hunt to discover the cause of vanishing settlements, increased xenos sightings, and aggressive confrontations between the Rogue Traders and a mysterious group of raiding pirate vessels, you and your fellow Explorers are thrust on a perilous journey. The key to your quest lies hidden at the Casket of Secrets, in the very heart of the Citadel of Skulls, Karrad Vall’s home. Prepare to attempt the ultimate heist: stealing a priceless artefact that belonged to a legendary starship from Karrad Vall’s vault. No sane person has ever risked entering the Faceless Lord’s inner sanctum, let alone stealing from him...until you.

Raiders, Slavers, and Reavers

Can you and your fellow Explorers navigate safely through your impending expedition? Your journey begins with strange developments, untrustworthy guides, and the awakened mysterious force shadowing your every step. The way to Vall’s seat of power is blocked by potential hazards and a sky full of raiders, slavers, and reavers. Plot your course through Vall’s dark cathedral, past quivering slaves and brutal enemies, bloody chambers, and the ossuaries full of bones that give the Citadel its name. And once you reach the Casket of Secrets you’ll meet “the Archivist.”

Citadel of Skulls can be played as a standalone adventure or connected to the events introduced in The Frozen Reaches. Will you be able to withstand the voyage?

Head to your local retailer to pick up your copy, and get ready to take your place in the events that will shape the future of the Koronus Expanse!

Looking forward to reading this one so I can find out what happens in the middle of this trilogy.

Bad things.

On a more serious note, I skimmed through it at my FLGS. I didn't scrutinize everything, but the ending is definitely one that would require tweaking if the GM didn't plan to follow up with the third and final adventure. The tweaking in question wouldn't be too difficult, but it would need to be done.

Given that it's mentioned on the back of the book, I think it's safe to bring up the fact that the climax of the adventure involves stealing from someone's private treasure vault.
Spoiler:
The most prominent item in the vault (iirc the cogitator core from a haunted ship) is an obvious MacGuffin, and it's pretty obvious that said item will have an important role in the third and final book. But said item also probably won't be much use to the players unless the GM decides to get very creative.

Fortunately there's a very easy solution - just replace the item outright with something else.

It's a MacGuffin. Or in other words, it doesn't do anything out of the ordinary unless the GM says so. It's got an interesting background, sure. But it's not as if there are rules in the adventure that state, "On a rule of 96-100, your entire crew dies screaming as they claw their own eyes out."

There are some general mentions of various Legions in the fluff, but nothing all that specific about the Death Guard.

I'd suspect, given the usual order that 40K RPG books arrive in, that there there will eventually be a Legion-style supplement.

I can say with all honestly that I know nothing about any upcoming Black Crusade 'Legion' releases, so anything I say is pure speculation. And when I say that the order of Black Crusade releases will likely be:

1. Core Rulebook
2. GM Kit
3. Three part adventure book
4. Player's Guide/GM expansion book
5. Setting/background expansion book

... it's only because that's the exact same pathway the other three games have taken. So it's more of an educated guess rather than my usual "I know something you don't know but NDA's keep me silent" shtick.

I am the law!!!!

FFG wrote:Justice in His Name
Announcing Book of Judgement, a supplement for Dark Heresy

"There are no depths which we may fly above, no chasm we may bridge. It is our duty to fall into the pits, and there drag the unworthy before Judgement."
–Arbitrator Linger

The Calixis Sector is plagued with heretics, recidivists, and the unworthy...and they all dwell beneath the faithful servants of the God-Emperor, eroding the backbone of the Imperium’s war machine. Whether it is a planetary noble skimming off the top, or a seditious terrorist planning the destruction of an entire Hab-block, it is the Adeptus Arbites who bring them to judgement.

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Book of Judgement, a supplement for Dark Heresy!

Book of Judgement is a guide to crime and punishment in the Calixis Sector, and provides a powerful resource for Dark Heresy campaigns that feature Imperial Law as a story foundation. This detailed supplement contains new rules, backgrounds, alternate careers, and equipment for playing Acolytes with legal authority or a criminal past, and provides players with information about the Adeptus Arbites’ mission to bring order to the Calixis Sector. Game Masters of all experience levels will find expanded Investigation rules and a new adventure, Jurisdiction, that plunges the Acolytes into a conflict between three of the Imperium’s most powerful organisations.

A Council of Judges

For more on Book of Judgement, here’s a word from Dark Heresy’s lead developer:

I count myself extremely lucky in having worked with the team responsible for Book of Judgement. In addition to such veteran talents as Graham Davey and Charles May, the group was joined by Matthew Farrer, author of the Shira Calpurnia novels from Black Library. It was a great pleasure to dive into the Adeptus Arbites of the Calixis Sector with the assembled team of writers and I can’t wait for this book to be in the hands of players.

We worked tirelessly to stuff this book full of useful tools for GMs and Players alike. All the usual suspects are here: new Cell Directives, Alternate Career Ranks, Backgrounds, and, of course, tons of background information on the precincts of the Lex Calixis. A chapter focused purely on the creation of compelling mysteries distills over fifty years of combined GM experience, offering exciting ways to craft your own mystery and drive a game session forward through the players’ actions. We even included Jurisdiction, a full adventure focused on the overlapping interests of three Imperial factions.

One of the pleasures of creating a book like this is getting to truly delve into the ancient histories of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Games Workshop has been crafting this game world for over two decades, which provides a wealth of information. Having an opportunity (or a responsibility) to read everything I could about crime and judgement was an quite an experience. The bleak, dare I say grim, nature of justice in the dark future is filled with twists, turns, interpretations, and executions. Bringing that feel to Book of Judgement was, frankly, a lot of fun!

Keep checking back in the coming week as we offer previews, and look for Book of Judgement on store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2011!

A few comments about this book:

1. That is not what I pictured when I thought about the front cover for this book. An Arbite fighting a Defiler? I mean, sure, it's a great piece of artwork and the Defiler looks amazing, but for a book based around a group that is so heavily into investigation, fighting towering daemon engines isn't really what springs to the fore when one considers what the Adeptus Arbites are about.
2. The investigation rules are awesome.
3. I really like this book, and can't wait to get a copy.

Equipment and armour, even some basic rules, differ wildly throughout any and all of the currently existing three game systems; so far I have seen three different stat-sets for Marine weapons and two for their armour, and this does not even include Black Crusade yet. I am however not in the least surprised if I'd see BC follow suit - though I'd have wished they would drop that damn gear discrepancy at least for a game that will have normal people fight next to CSM by default.

I'm curious to see how they differ the marine armors in BC. Because BC is a mish-mash of RT/DW in terms of scale and power, I'd expect some difference between it and the DW armor since its starting equipment for some characters. I'm also curious to see how much of the old legion armor (the older variants up to mk6) abilities and variants are used. Since I haven't seen the book personally, I don't know if the Chaos marine builds focus more towards renegade modern marines (mk7 and 8) or original legion marines (mk2-6 generally)... or even a combo of parts from various armors as you read in the Nightlords books and see on the CSM minis.

We really need to write the Grimdark Miranda.

You have the right to remain silent.

Then you have the right to scream
Before you confess.

Anything you say

Will be used against you in the court of law
Or the torture chamber

You have the right to an attorney
We have he right to torture him as well

If you waive these rights

One of the things which bothers me quite a bit is all the various rules across the systems for things that I think should be the same.

Psyker power rules, arms, equipment, Xenos stats, etc.

It strikes me as an odd design decision to have so many things be so different.

Basic rules differ because they're slowly updating the system. Keep in mind that FFG did not write Dark Heresy, they licensed an already written game.

Where are the three different stat sets for Marine weapons and two for armour? There's the core rulebook weapons/armour, then errata weapons and... and... and what?

Don't forget that marine armor even differs within DW. Different marks of armor each work somewhat differently.

Next up what must easily be the angriest cover FFG have ever made:

FFG wrote:More Rogue than Trader
Announcing Hostile Acquisitions, a supplement for Rogue Trader

“An honest life is no life at all, all duty and servitude and struggling to survive at the feet of someone born to better. A dishonest life is the way to live—no preacher expects a thief to tithe, and the authorities have no claim on moneys stolen. Of course, you need a quick wit to survive… few are happy to find themselves a few thrones lighter, and the Magistratum don’t take too kindly to thieves.”
–‘Fingers’ Deru, Scintillan pick-pocket

Rogue Traders are accustomed to earning their livings in the grey areas of the law, but a few brave or foolhardy captains take it a step further...

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the next supplement for Rogue Trader, Hostile Acquisitions! Within this detailed book, players and GMs will find all they need to run a campaign on the far side of Imperial Law. From new characters and equipment to creating nemeses and running games based on criminal enterprise, Hostile Acquisitions is an invaluable resource on those Rogue Traders who are more rogue than trader.

Crime often pays

For more on Hostile Acquisitions, let’s hear from lead developer of Rogue Trader:

Hostile Acquisitions has some particularly exciting aspects that were deviously fun to work on. One was the new character alternate career ranks, such as the Swashbucker, the House Operative, and the Cold Trader. These new alternate career ranks are highly flavourful, and allow you to make a character with a distinctively “scoundrel” bent. The House Operative is especially interesting, because it allows players to make characters who are essentially secret agents for a more powerful entity. They might even be working for the Rogue Trader’s dynasty’s interests, rather than the Rogue Trader, so players may take the role of an agent who may be secretly working against his own boss.

Another fascinating part of Hostile Acquisitions is the Nemesis Origin Path. A modification of the popular Rogue Trader Origin Path system, the Nemesis Path helps GMs craft a custom made adversary for their groups. The Nemesis Path actually ties into the Origin Path that the players fill out, so that the choices they make can determine the type of adversary they’ll go up against.

Of course, this is only some of the new content in this book. Hostile Acquisitions has new gear and starship upgrades to facilitate piracy and smuggling, a section on Imperial adversaries and details on Imperial Law, guidelines on how to run a “con” game, and a list of mythical treasures waiting to be “liberated.”

Hostile Acquisitions is a guide to crime for Explorers with a flexible sense of morality. A catalog of valuable treasures wait to be “liberated.” In short, Hostile Acquisitions is proof that in the Koronus Expanse, crime often pays.

Keep checking back over the coming weeks as we preview Hostile Acquisitions, and look for it on store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2011!

And finally, a book that a lot of people will respond to with 'Well it's about time!' - First Founding...

FFG wrote:Loyal Legions and Traitors
Announcing First Founding, a supplement for Deathwatch

“Only when by the power of our hate we have truly shed the prison of our flesh, shall we be judged worthy to stand at the side of the returned Primarch. Every foe I slay, every stone I cast down, makes my hatred purer, and the day Ferrus Manus is restored to us a day closer.”
–Iron Father Klaanu Johar

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of First Founding, a supplement for Deathwatch! The First Founding Legions were crafted by the Emperor himself in the image of his twenty Primarchs. They forged the Imperium in bloody combat as they waged the Great Crusade across the galaxy. Many Space Marines fell to the maligned seduction of Chaos during the Horus Heresy, but those that stayed loyal formed the base from which all Space Marine Chapters would be created. Those Chapters that still hold the loyalist Legions’ names and colours are the oldest and the most revered of all the Adeptus Astartes.

First Founding details the nine Chapters directly formed from the loyalist Space Marines Legions, and includes new rules from solo modes to new advances specialities. Of these nine Chapters, First Founding features the final four Chapters not discussed in previous Deathwatch rulebooks. This exciting supplement includes the background of the nine Traitor Legions and their fall to the seduction of the Ruinous Powers. Additionally, for the first time in Deathwatch, First Founding provides new rules for Battle-Brothers to have followers.

Exploring their heritage

For more on First Founding, here’s a word from Deathwatch’s lead developer:

The Battle-Brothers of the Deathwatch owe their heritage to a myriad of diverse chapters from across the Imperium. Of these chapters, none are more revered than those that owe their namesake to the original Space Marine Legions that fought in the Great Crusade. From the wild Space Wolves of Fenris, to the cold and calculating Iron Hands of Medusa, the chapters of the First Founding have a long and glorious legacy.

Today I’m very excited to announce the latest sourcebook in the Deathwatch line: First Founding. As you may have guessed, First Founding is all about those Space Marines who owe their name to the legendary First Founding Legions. It provides rules for playing as Battle-Brothers from the four First Founding Chapters never before detailed in the Deathwatch line: the Iron Hands, the Raven Guard, the Salamanders, and the White Scars. The book also includes new rules for the other five First Founding Chapters, including some all new chapter-specific Advanced Specialties and Chapter Relics.

As we made this book, we worked to explore the relationships between Battle-Brothers of these different chapters. First Founding contains an entire chapter devoted to the experience of joining the Deathwatch, and serving along Space Marines of all different backgrounds for the first time, helping players to get even more personally involved with their character during his service in the long watch.

Finally, First Founding contains a gripping adventure that sees the Kill-team working alongside forces from three different Space Marine chapters as they fight for the fate of an entire world. As these chapters’ combat philosophies begin to clash, tensions rise, and it is up to the Kill-team to mediate between the chapters and determine the fate of an entire world.

Look for previews in the coming weeks, and prepare for First Founding to be released in the fourth quarter of 2011!

I've been wondering for a while now when FFG were going to announce this book, and I might have the odd comment to add as more information about First Founding is made public.

And yay for Hostile Acquisitions, I'd be angry too if I had to wait that long for the book to be announced properly. Still, sounds good from the look of it, the Nemesis Origin Path in particular.

And the news just does not stop:

FFG wrote:Conspiracy at the Highest Level
The latest Dark Heresy adventure is available for sale vie download

"Around us is darkness and sin. We slip as one ever further into hell. If one could arrest our slide to damnation, but doing so would cost more lives than you can comprehend, is it not right to take that step. Appalling though the price might be, is it not our duty?"
—Pronouncement of the First Synod of the Maledictor’s Hand

The Church of the Damned, an adventure for Dark Heresy, is now on sale via download at drivethrurpg.com and rpgnow.com!

Mystery and Conspiracy

Head to drivethrurpg.com or rpgnow.com and download your copy of The Church of the Damned today!

I know this pace won't keep up, but it is nice to get so many new things in one day.

Well... Blood of Martyrs has rules for Penitent Engines (I presume the ones in Church of the Damned are just the copypasta'd version, but I'd have to check). If you have a nice enough GM (or twisted enough GM) I 'spose they could let you pilot one.

That said, I'm pretty sure that 'Penitent Engine Pilot' would be a lot like the 'Sister Repentia' alternate rank - a one-way trip. You don't come back from that.

Yeah. Amazon's release dates are usually based upon 2 things.

1) When they expect to have an "acceptable" level of stock.
2) If they have an exact date from the supplier.

It's why you'll see many games given release dates of "December 31st, XXXX"(with XXXX being the year you're currently in) because they've been given no set release date other than "this year".

Time for a Rogue Trader preview:

FFG wrote:The Gratitude of the Expanse
A preview of Fallen Suns, the upcoming Rogue Trader adventure

“Brand me a heretic, but I love xenos. Selling the gear from the bodies of the ones I slay has made me a wealthy man."
–Rogue Trader Krawkin Feckward

Last month, Fantasy Flight Games announced Fallen Suns, the third and final instalment in The Warpstorm Trilogy for Rogue Trader. Today, we’re pleased to offer a preview of Fallen Suns by contributing writer John Dunn.

I was fortunate to have an opening in my writing schedule at the same time that the Rogue Trader development team needed an author for Fallen Suns. Working closely with Sam Stewart and Ross Watson, I crafted the plot details for the adventure, while Jason Marker fleshed out the Gazetteer section and created the game statistics for the adventure’s encounters.

Raising the Bar

Fallen Suns is the final instalment of The Warpstorm Trilogy. Without spoiling too much, in The Frozen Reaches, the Explorers faced an Ork horde large enough to conquer a planet. During Citadel of Skulls, they confronted a well defended Chaos fortress. My first challenge was to identify a foe that offered a threat appropriate to follow what had come before.

Fortunately, the Koronus Expanse is a source of bountiful story hooks and phenomenal dangers. The region plays host to lost worlds, unknowable threats, and the constant dangers of the warp. The development team was kind enough to let me interweave some of the threats that had been hinted at previously. Pulling from the the first two books of trilogy as well as materials from the Rogue Trader Core Rulebook, Edge of the Abyss, and Lure of The Expanse, I worked with the rest of the team to develop an Eldar threat of titanic proportions.

Previous materials had established that some of the Eldar within in the Expanse are extremely hostile towards humanity. Fallen Suns reveals at least one of the reasons for that stance. The adventure challenges the Explorers to overcome this animosity at the same time that they must defend themselves from a threat that endangers the entirety of the Expanse. If the Explorers take care, they may unearth countless xenos secrets from this ancient threat at the same time as they recover priceless xenos artefacts and technology. Of course, the Explorers are not the only people within the Expanse interested in uncovering its secrets and harnessing its power.

If the characters succeed in overcoming their foes, the potential rewards are immeasurable. Their Profit Factor could skyrocket as human and xenos alike rush to show their gratitude. New information and technology could lead to countless new adventures, or it could be sold to those willing to exploit it. The Explorers might ensure the economic stability of their dynasty for generations or choose to expand in entirely different directions using their newly procured resources. Immeasurable vistas open for those who have saved the Expanse from such a dire threat.

Conversely, if they fail, their lives become far more challenging and potentially much shorter. The risks are dramatic, but the rewards are vast. For those Explorers willing to accept the chance of death and near-certain damnation as they confront overwhelming odds, the Endeavour presents an unparalleled opportunity.

Ongoing Saga

Unless the Explorers meet with tragedy, this adventure wraps up the end of an adventure trilogy but does not complete their story. There are countless additional tales to tell within the Koronus Expanse. Because of this, the scenario concludes by presenting a variety of new hooks that tie in to the revelations contained throughout The Warpstorm Trilogy. Depending upon their decisions, the Explorers may be anxious to seek vengeance and repayment from dozens of foes, or they might be fleeing their former allies. Both of these possibilities and their myriad variants are considered, as the Explorers prepare to embark upon their next Endeavour.

Keep checking back for more on Fallen Suns, and look for it on store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2011!

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=2618
An Open Call for Freelance RPG Writers
Read on to learn how to submit your best work to FFG for consideration
Calling all prospective roleplaying game writers! Fantasy Flight Games is looking to develop new freelance talent for its multiple roleplaying game lines, and you could be part of our growing family of freelance writers.

Between the dates of September 1, 2011 and September 8, 2011 Fantasy Flight Games is conducting an open call for prospective freelance writers. Those interested are invited to email submissions to Fantasy Flight Games. These submissions will be evaluated, and those who meet Fantasy Flight Games’ criteria and standards can earn the chance to write for one of our roleplaying game lines.

Each submission must consist of the following components:
A cover letter. In this, you should introduce yourself, discuss your familiarity with our various intellectual properties (both those owned by FFG and those licensed from other companies), including Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40,000, and Star Wars.
A resume. This should cover any relevant writing and professional experience. It must also include your full legal name, physical mailing address, email address, and a contact phone number. All applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
A writing sample. This should be a description and stat block for a single monster or creature in a science-fiction or fantasy setting of your choosing.

When preparing your writing sample, please follow these criteria:

The sample must be no less than 600 words, and no more than 1,000 words including the stat block.
The sample must include both a description of the creature and how it fits into the setting, and a stat block detailing the creature’s characteristics and abilities.
The stat block must use the rules from Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay (any game line) or FFG's Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay.
Avoid any violence towards children or otherwise defenseless individuals or any sexual violence. Any submission containing this will be rejected outright, and the writer will not be able to write for us in the future.
We are not looking for comedy entries, and do not submit any easter eggs. Any overt or subtle references to your favorite comic book, movie, song, or other media will get your submission rejected.
Use your best possible grammar and spelling. One of our criteria is good writing ability, not just creative thinking.
The submission must be in .pages, .doc, or .rtf format.

Once you have assembled your submission, email it to freelanceopencall@fantasyflightgames.com. No submissions sent later than 11:00 p.m. CST on Thursday, September 8, 2011 will be accepted. Once all submissions have been collected, we will evaluate them to see which meet our criteria for freelance writers.

Please note that due to the large number of submissions, Fantasy Flight Games will not send any response to acknowledge receipt of your submission, whether your submission is accepted or rejected. If your submission is accepted, we will enter your name into our freelance roster, but we may not contact you until we have an assignment for you to work on. There is no guarantee at any point in this process that we will hire you as a freelance writer.

Also, please note that by submitting your writing sample you are voluntarily giving up your claim to this writing sample. Any writing samples that involve Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay or Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay are also subject to Games Workshop’s Submission Policy. Please read this in relation to this material.

Good luck to everyone in this open call, and have fun!

So I can confirm that it does exist.

Amazon is the devil: 'We're happy to inform you that your book is ready a week earlier then we had previously announced!" "We regret to inform you that we are having trouble processing your card at this time!'

Both emails came within give min of each other. I wonder why there might not be money in the bank to cover it a week before it was supposed to be shipped??? Particularly since the banks were closed for the night when both these emails were made...

.. I heard maybe end of Sep or early October..

.. if so guess that'll be the preview stuff at GD ; Uk perhaps ?

Citadel of Skulls and The Achilles Assault are now, finally, in my manly clutches, my long battle with the post office and their redelivery plots and schemes having been resolved in my favour.

.. was there ever any doubt ? yes. Yes there was.

anyway..

Only had a brief flick through them, mainly at the stats that are offered up.

Should really read Citadel of Skulls first.. but the Achilles Crusade book.. oh man ! It's really, really good Kudos to all those involved. Every time I flick to a different section I keep getting drawn into it, there's so many col ideas, stories and little fluff nuggets in there.

I know there's a few people who only buy these books for the fluff, if so then this book is pretty much essential.

I especially like the Hadex Anamoly stuff.. especially the Limitless Grasp idea... that is a wickedly cool idea.

Achilus Assault is out? Finally! I'll need to get FFG to send me my copy then.

The Achilus Assault is a book that our group really liked. It was actually the first thing we play-tested for FFG, and I'd like to think that we had a lot of influence on certain things (Mephidast and the Dark Apostle especially) - though that could be my ego talking (). The Fire Wasp has become a near-mandatory piece of kit for our group, and the Dragon's Fang Relic gets used by our Blood Angel Assault Marine every chance he gets. I love the section on the Space Hulk - it's easily my fav thing in that book and we've used it as the setting for a number of our games.

Aside from play-testing this book, I also proofread it (hence the reason why I'm in no rush to read it - I've already read it cover-2-cover three times). Make sure to thank fellow Dakkanaut, the_dunner, as he is responsible for a lot of the Tyranid stuff in that book, including the best description of the stages of a Tyranid invasion that I've ever read.

I can't go into the development process of any book (NDA's and all that), but I will say that even my small involvement in this book was a big learning experience for me. It gave me a first hand look at the development cycle for a book, and gave me a greater appreciation for why these things take so long (we first saw this book in late Jan/early Feb).

Disclaimer: As always, the views expressed above are my own and I do not speak for, on behalf of or represent Fantasy Flight Games in any official capacity, etc. etc. etc.

I know nothing in regards to that subject. If they have, I haven’t seen it (and besides, even if I had, I wouldn’t be able to say anything about it). Thinking about it though, the Scythes don’t do a great deal during the period where Deathwatch is set. Their shining moments (that we know of) come during the Damocles Crusade, which is pre-Deathwatch, and Hive Fleet Kraken, which is post-Deathwatch.

The Achilus Assault is finally here:

FFG wrote:The Assault Begins
The Achilus Assault, a supplement for Deathwatch, is now available

“All ships, fire at will! Gunner, get me a lock on that hive ship... I want our nova cannon ready to fire the instant we enter optimal range.”
–Final received transmission from the Dominator-class Cruiser Ferrum Aeterna

The Achilus Assault, a supplement for Deathwatch, is now available at your local retailer and on our webstore!

This detailed sourcebook tells of the Achilus Crusade and the great challenges it faces from both without and within. Living up to the ideals of honor, brotherhood, and duty is a difficult task, and it is the fate of the Deathwatch Space Marines in the Jericho Reach to shoulder this duty head-on—they are the first and last line of defence against a myriad of threats to the Crusade of which some commanders are not even aware.

Incoming Orders

For more on this invaluable resource, we present a few insights from Deathwatch’s lead developer:

The setting for the Deathwatch RPG is a massive war front—the Achilus Crusade—sweeping across the lost worlds of the Jericho Reach. The front lines of this interstellar conflict are a great backdrop for the adventures of the Deathwatch Space Marines battling alongside the Crusade forces, and the Achilus Assault is a brand-new sourcebook that brings all of this into focus for a Deathwatch campaign. The Achilus Assault provides detailed descriptions for some of the Jericho Reach’s most significant planets and warzones to allow players and GMs alike to plan new Deathwatch Missions.

Each of the three major salients of the Achilus Crusade have their own unique themes and deadly enemies. Some foes may be reasoned with, whilst others must be fought to the bitter end. This book describes the major threats to the Crusade’s advance and describes how the efforts of Deathwatch Kill-teams can tip the balance.

With The Achilus Assault, you can bring your Deathwatch campaign into the front lines of the Crusade, and choose which worlds shall be saved, and which shall burn.

For more on The Achilus Assault, check out our detailed previews: Hive Fleet Dagon, A Diseased Soul, and Know the Man, Know the Mission. Then, head to your local retailer today and begin the assault!

Not so impressed by Achilus Assault. Again we get a crunch-free source book. There are sidebars (ooh) and a handful of stat blocks along with a ton of fluffy stuff that makes interesting reading but in the end the Jericho Reach still seems hollow. I don't blame the content, because the book was designed as a basis for a GM to develop their own content on top of this setting.

Okay. But I really want more crunchy bits in my source books. Like Edge of the Abyss for RT. That one is similar in the doughy plot possibilities and the same stale adventure no one ever plays but put some awesome content in the middle on opponent.

Criticising the setting-expansion book for not being a crunchy rulebook seems a bit daft to me. Makes about as much sense as accusing Rites of Battle of being too rule-focused.

Each line has a book like this - Disciples of the Dark Gods, Edge of the Abyss and now The Achilus Assault. I can't remember what the Black Crusade one is, or even if it's been mentioned, but you can be pretty sure we'll be getting one of those as well. World-building books are necessary. If you want crunch you'll just have to wait for First Founding.

Some stores just don't have a clue regarding what customer service is. One of the many problems with my previous LGS ("f" left out on purpose) was that the owner jerked me around for almost a month after the release of the IG codex that I preordered. I ordered it three weeks prior to its release and inquired about it twice a week (my usual gaming night and a quick stop to pick up a Star Wars or D&D minis booster or two every week) and he kept telling me that it hadn't come in yet. After getting that same answer for the 4th week in a row, I just called up another store from his parking lot that had it in stock and went inside to cancel my "preorder". When I did, he admitted he never ordered it (and this was the second time I simply never got a preorder from him). Out of 4 special/preorders I placed with him, I never got two... I guess my money simply wasn't good enough for him. One of three or four "screw you!" episodes that made me switch to a much better but unfortunately much further store.

I pay an annual fee of ten Euros for a global 10% discount on all products in store and the ability to reserve pre-orders with the option of e-mail notification when it arrives at the store. They stopped sending me notifications a few months ago and they stopped reserving my RT and Dust orders. So why they are doing this now is beyond me. But whatever, I'm going to cancel my "Rogue Trader" subscription with them next time I'm able to along with my remaining Dust Tactics pre-orders. Back to Maelstrom it is, not my first choice due to their long sorting/packing/shipping times of up to a month, but free shipping is free shipping and they are a bit cheaper than the LGS.

What exactly does a 'collectors edition' usually contain in addition to a regular FFG book?

It doesn't contain anything extra, it just has a fancy cover and/or case and usually a certificate of some kind.

For instance, the Rogue Trader one came with a Warrant of Trade, and you could have your own name (or Rogue Trader's name) put onto it. The book was printed in a different quality - may have come in a box, I don't remember exactly. The Deathwatch collector's edition had a similar thing, this time the Apocraphyn Oath (or whatever it's called) with your Marine's name and Chapter on there. And it came in a big metal case with a 'key' that didn't actually unlock it, but it was on a chain, and the book had fabric book-marks in it, and so on.

FFG had a resin prototype box for the BC CE on display at GenCon. There were several pieces, and I'm not certain how they fit together. To my eye, it reminded me of a Hellraiser box, with more skulls and pointy bits.

Well in fairness, I'm kinda regretting not getting the Deathwatch special edition... but I waited till I had read the book in store, by which point the special editions were sold out. Its created a bit of a situation where you have to buy the limited edition sight unseen and if you end up not enjoying it enough... well you can't fault someone for trying to recoup their money.

I buy .pdf copies of the rules instead of fancy special editions. I like having both media and frankly use the electronic versions more often than the print. Spending a huge amount of money on window dressing can be nice, but I like function over form.

Greetings, Deathwatch fans!

Today, we are thrilled to present the first preview for the latest sourcebook in the Deathwatch line: First Founding. With so much great content in this book, it was difficult deciding what to share first.

One of the highlights of First Founding is the awesome background material throughout the book that paints a picture, not only of the nine loyalist legions, but of the nine traitor legions as well. Written by Andy Hoare, this background goes in depth on the history behind each of these legions, as well as details on the distinguished Chapters the loyalists have become, giving players and GMs alike the tools to become truly engaged in roleplaying Space Marines from these legendary chapters.

A Glimpse of Power

The Deathwatch team is pleased to give you a taste of Andy’s background material on one of the four Space Marine Chapters new to Deathwatch—the Iron Hands. Imbued with the gene-seed of their Primarch Ferrus Mannus, these calculating Space Marines suffer no weakness, striving towards perfection throughout their lives by attempting to replace as much of their weak flesh as they can with powerful cybernetics.

Read more about this venerable Chapter in Iron Hands (pdf, 612 KB), and cast off your weakness.

We’ll have more previews over the next few weeks. Keep checking back for more, and look for First Founding on store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2011!

It's time to acquire... in a hostile manner!

FFG wrote:

A preview of Hostile Acquisitions, the upcoming Rogue Trader supplement

“Always be watchful of pirates and other ne’er-do-wells; seldom, if ever, are they unarmed, and even one who appears at your mercy may still have a trick or six left. A micro-stubber, a sneak-knife, a tox-mister or something more malicious still may lurk beneath sleeves, within hidden pockets elsewhere about their person.”
–Chief Petty Officer Vincholo, addressing a new group of Armsmen aboard the Vengeful Martyr

Last month, we announced the upcoming release of Hostile Acquisitions, the next supplement for Rogue Trader. From new characters and equipment to creating nemeses and running games based on criminal enterprise, Hostile Acquisitions is an invaluable resource for players and GMs wishing to run a campaign on the far side of Imperial Law. Today, we’re pleased to present a preview by contributing writer Nathan Dowdell.

Practicality and Style

As any self-respecting Rogue Trader knows, employing the right tools is not merely a matter of practicality, but also one of style; swords, guns and armour serve as accessories for the discerning Rogue Trader’s wardrobe, each conveying a particular impression. For those Rogue Traders who flaunt the laws more than most, a far greater wealth of options exist, with obscene xenos artefacts and forbidden technologies of ancient days accompanying the more mundane bolters, power swords, and carapace armour.

This was the task I was given for the armoury in Hostile Acquisitions – to delve into the forbidden, the unholy and the immeasurably rare to provide an array of bizarre and illegal devices with which to equip more criminally-minded Explorers. This covers a wide range of items, from crudely fashioned devices produced by heretek artisans beyond the Maw, to the plundered artefacts of the Eldar and other species, to precious Archaeotech and blasphemous items the ownership of which is a death sentence. With weapons such as voidsuit-shredding Razorhail guns, counterfeit “Footfall-pattern” bolters, ancient microgrenade dispensers, devastating Rad grenades, bizarre Stryxis Aetherflare bombs, and the lethal grace of the Shuriken Cannon, ranged combat is well catered for. Of course, those who favour melee may find priceless Eldar Mirrorswords, vicious Zaythan Warblades, or the foul Curseblades of the Stryxis more to their tastes.

Aficionados of ostentatious or exotic armour are not overlooked either. A variety of suits exists, including repurposed carapaces normally used to protect crewmen working with heavy machinery, pressurised carapace armour designed for boarding actions, cunningly made clothing containing hidden mesh armour, and suits of chitinous plates ripped from the exoskeletons of vile Xenos beasts.

Less-than-Legal Equipment

To further emphasise the freedom that comes with disregarding the laws and traditions of the Imperium, I created lists of additional weapon and armour upgrades more suited to the forbidden experimentation of hereteks and criminals, as well as tools better suited to illicit purposes. Easily concealed micro-stubbers, shotguns with jury-rigged bolt shells, reverse-engineered human copies of xenos weaponry, powered exoskeletons for voidsuits, and concealed weapon mounts are just a few examples of what the upgrades section holds.

Additional tools can be found later in the chapter, from illegal gear such as Elseways Charts that tell of paths through the warp unknown to most (or Prognosticators that can guide a vessel without a Navigator’s aid) to piratical tools that project false distress signals across the void. Also included is a variety of drugs and poisons to be used or traded and an array of bionics such as the feature-concealing twitch-mask or the brutal servo-limbs used by menial labourers and augmented pit-fighters on countless worlds.

Whether you scavenge your gear from the ruins of ancient civilisations, steal it from the corpses of your enemies, or choose to create it yourself, there should be something of interest in Hostile Acquisitions’ armoury.

The Wrong Side of the Law

“You have been accused, in the Emperor’s Name, of the crime of Piracy. You have the right to confess to your crime and seek absolution for your sins. Pleas for leniency will not be heard.”
– Master Chastener Grigor Cardainn, levelling an accusation at the captain and crew of the Unhallowed

Those who defy the laws of the Imperium will, sooner or later, be confronted by the organisations who uphold those laws. In Hostile Acquisitions, an entire chapter is devoted to these forces of law and order, providing background and rules for a collection of adversaries – warriors and starships alike – who might have been allies under other circumstances.

Key amongst these are the Adeptus Arbites, the Imperial Navy, and the Adeptus Mechanicus, each of whom have their own focus when it comes to matters of law. The Arbitrators are concerned more with enforcing the Emperor’s laws upon His worlds. The Imperial Navy, on the other hand, patrols the void across the Imperium, watchful not only for Xenos invasions and Chaos incursions, but also for the pirates, raiders and smugglers that ply the cold, dark spaces between worlds. Patrol Group 686 serves as an example of these patrols, providing details of the Armsmen of the Imperial Navy, and a few of its vessels.

Deadlier still are the crimson-garbed priesthood of Mars, the Adeptus Mechanicus, whose fervour for punishing those who blaspheme against the holy machine or seek to keep technology from its rightful masters is virtually unmatched. Many pirates across the Calixis Sector and the Koronus Expanse are hereteks as well, for they operate starships away from the sanctified intellects of Tech-Priests and perform acts of hideous irreverence with the technology at their disposal. To combat such threats, patrol vessels armed with sophisticated weaponry and laden with Skitarii warriors and savage Murder-Servitors are employed by cruel, unrelenting Magi who will not suffer to live those whose heathen ways offend the Omnissiah.

These are not the only threats to criminally-minded Explorers – the Inquisition, the warriors and vessels of local Planetary Defence Forces, and even the supreme bureaucrats of the Administratum can all prove to be an obstacle between a Rogue Trader and his ill-gotten profits.

Thanks, Nathan! Keep checking back for more on Hostile Acquisitions, and look for in on store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2011!

And angry cover, and an angry-looking Arbite.

Embrace Your Desires

“Not everyone receives the attention of the Dark Gods. Only those who are demonstrably exceptional are worthy of their notice.”
– Dark Apostle Aurelius of the Word Bearers

The Ruinous Powers care little for their followers, seeing them merely as hapless pawns to be used in their inscrutable plots. On occasion, however, these pathetic masses produce a select few, chosen by the Dark Gods of Chaos for a higher purpose. To these favoured servants, Chaos bestows unimaginable wealth and power. These dark gifts can come in many forms: a blessed mutation, the downfall of one’s enemies, and even an ancient and powerful artefact to which a daemon’s soul is bound...

The magnificent Black Crusade Collector’s Edition is an artefact of rare and perfect beauty, its very existence an affront to the puritanical ideals of the so-called Imperium of Man. Although ownership of such a heretical object means a life of exile and hardship, the rewards far outweigh the costs. This symbol of your devotion to Chaos is a possession well worth selling your soul for.

The instant you see the stunningly detailed design of its breathtaking resin case, you will appreciate it as a work of undeniable craftsmanship. This remarkable outer case displays a stylized Star of Chaos, its eight points dripping with the blood of the unworthy as a horrific daemon emerges from its center. Inside, the special edition Black Crusade Core Rulebook is bound in crimson leather, with copper-gilded edges adorning its high-quality, acid-free pages.

But in addition to its impossible beauty, the Black Crusade Collector’s Edition offers a wealth of forbidden knowledge; it contains sixteen pages of exclusive bonus content, featuring pre-generated characters with unique backstories, statistics, and art. Use these memorable heretics as inspiration for your own characters, or as powerful NPCs in your dark campaigns!

Click the image above for a preview of Black Crusade Collector’s Edition’s exclusive content (pdf, 688 KB)

Hunted Throughout the Galaxy

Cushioned in the case’s supple velvet interior, you’ll find a personalized Writ of Execution, proclaiming your heresy to the galaxy and calling for your immediate death in the name of the Corpse-Emperor. Whether you use your own name or invent a fearsome persona, your chosen moniker will be handwritten in expert calligraphy, declaring your villainous intentions throughout the Imperium of Man.

What’s more, Black Crusade Collector’s Edition has been produced in a strictly limited run of 750 copies worldwide, so whether you are a Game Master, a player, or an aficionado of all things heretical in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, you will want to claim this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for yourself.

Ready to proclaim your devotion to the Ruinous Powers? Visit our webstore today to place your pre-order, then display your devotion to Chaos in the first quarter of 2012!

Woot, the Collectors edition has been announced. $150 is a very steep price tag for a book though. I’ll have to make my decision on whether to order the Collectors or Standard Edition pretty quick though.

As for what name to choose if I do order the collector’s edition, I’m thinking of using the name of a pre-existing special character like Abaddon the Despoiler or Lord Zhufor the Impaler. Might wait for the aussie dollar to increase a bit on the stock market before making a purchase.

Thanks for your reply. I might decide later on today and place the order tonight. The dollar being worth $0.97USD only equals to paying a few extra dollars. Are you going to grab the collectors or standard?

Edit: Just saw the $100 price tag for shipping on the FFG site. Screw that, I'm not paying $100 for shipping.

Yes. The major downside to ordering from FFG directly are their shipping costs. You can use USPS rather than UPS to take away some of the price, but not all of it.

I won't be getting the collector's. No desire to own it.

International shipping costs simply suck...using DE CE (12.5 lbs) as baseline, USPS Express International (tracking and insurance) comes out to $97. One could save ~$10 by using Priority Mail, but then you lose the ability to track.

And finally confirmation:

FFG wrote:The First Glimpse of Power
Black Crusade and the Black Crusade Game Master's Kit are now on sale

“Embrace your hunger, your lust, your desire. The universe is ours for the taking!”
–Sanctifer LeVay, Cult of the Sacred Union

It is the 41st millennium, a time of constant strife. For untold billions, merely to be born is to be condemned to a lifetime of cruel suffering under an unforgiving and draconian regime. Only a select few in positions of power are permitted limited freedom: the Inquisitors who hunt heretics, the Rogue Traders who gather wealth, and the Deathwatch Space Marines who combat the alien threat. But there are those who nonetheless claim power, seeking personal glory and dark notoriety by any means necessary...

Black Crusade, the fourth standalone RPG in the popular Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay line, is now available at your local retailer and on our webstore!

This remarkable experience offers players a new perspective on the conflict between the Imperium of Man and the forces of Chaos by delivering the unprecedented opportunity to play as a Disciple of the Dark Gods, whether as a Chaos Space Marine or a human Servant of Chaos.

Why resist?

“It is not enough to defeat your foe. His people must be ravaged, homeland laid waste, and his reputation laid bare. Only then will your name be known as a true servant of the gods.”
–Battlelord Octavius Kohl

Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader, and Deathwatch each portray loyalty to the Imperium from multiple perspectives. Throughout them all, however, one common factor is Chaos: the ubiquitous antagonist responsible for much of what defines this immersive setting. But with Black Crusade, players can examine this exciting universe through an entirely new lens. Who are the characters, and what set them on the path of corruption? Are they willingly in league with the enemies of humanity, or are they merely the deluded slaves of forces far beyond their comprehension?

Bring Order to Chaos

“Make war upon the Imperium of Man? What is it you think the Legions have been doing for the last ten thousand years? War does not end with a single victory or a single planet. It is an eternal creature that outlives men and their tiny triumphs."
–Arzyn the Silencebringer, warrior of the World Eaters

Also available at your local retailer and our webstore is The Game Master’s Kit for Black Crusade!

This helpful resource features a sturdy Game Master’s screen, displaying stunning Black Crusade art on one side and a wealth of useful quick references on the other. In addition, The Game Master’s Kit includes a 32-page full colour booklet with a complete adventure, a selection of useful NPCs, expanded rules for running Black Crusade adventures, and advice for how to run an extended campaign. Glean its forbidden knowledge, and be ready for your first forays into the arms of the Ruinous Powers.

With countless creative and engaging opportunities, Black Crusade delivers an exciting new roleplaying experience. The days of the Imperium of Man are coming to an end, and the corpse-god will soon fall. Learn more by reading our detailed series of previews, then head to your local retailer and submit to your dark masters!

Finally!

I DID check my facts. Which is why I knew that the last time FFG mentioned the product was in their preview on August 29th (note that, as I pointed out, that's exactly one month prior to my previous post). There's nothing in FFG's Rogue Trader section to indicate that it has shipped, and the most recent updates have been for Hostile Acquisitions. I think it would be a bit more accurate to say that FFG was slow getting its announcement up. As I said, I checked FFG's Rogue Trader section yesterday. And I also checked it again today about the same time that I put my last post up. There was nothing on the website about the book going on sale.

In any event, I've now seen it myself, as my local store has it on the shelf.

The UPCOMING section of FFG's site is where I look first. The various brand sections are slower to reflect title updates. Even then I've had a couple of surprises hit the shelves this year where they went from On the Boat to In Stores Now in a heartbeat.

Just asked this in the review thread but here seems appropriate too (and has more traffic)...

For those with the book, can you guys go over the mechanical changes to the general system compared to Deathwatch (the previous most recent version and the first one with marines). I had heard that full and semi auto fire no longer gives you bonuses and that close combat now grants multiple attacks based on your roll (extra attack for every 20 points under threshold or something?). DW needs some tweaking IMHO and I'm curious to see what the next marine containing game evolved into.

Sort of correct. The way attacks are handled as been changed to be consistent between shooting and melee. What you end up with is:

Standard Attack (Ranged & Melee) = 1/2 Action, +10 To Hit.
Semi-Auto/Swift Attack = 1/2 Action, +0 To Hit, for every 2 DOS after the first you get another hit (up to weapon's maximum rate of fire/up to wielder's WS bonus).
Full-Auto/Lightning Attack = 1/2 Action, -10 To Hit, for every DOS after the first you get another hit (up to weapon's maximum rate of fire/up to wielder's WS bonus).

    It works wonderfully well.

Kid_Kyoto wrote:Hey does anyone know if BC has a d1000 mutation table ala the old chaos books?

No D1000 tables, but it does have several D100 tables, one for standard mutations and then four more for more God-specific mutations.

Just to be the odd one out, no, I'm not excited about that book.

Miss Dee wrote:How come there is no zerkers in the book I wonder?

Because not all Khornate Marines are Berzerkers, and because a Core Rulebook has to present the most general options available. I'm certain that latter books will give us Cult Troop Archetypes and other such things.

You know I can't give specifics about what's in the book, other than it's a book called First Founding and therefore covers those Chapters/Legions relevant to the First Founding (except 2 and 11, as no one's allowed to talk about those).

    You're unexcited about the book.

Does this mean that there's somehow less material than most people may expect from a supplement of its type?

I'm actually not sure why it was made into a half action. If I had to guess I'd say it would be allow more use of the other combat actions (including things like Aim). For most things getting Lightning Attack means that that's pretty much all you ever do once you have it. Now that it's a 1/2 action you can you can mix it with other things and be more tactical in its use.

Also, changing Swift and Lightning Attack to mirror Semi- and Full-Auto means that evasion works in the same way. A big problem with the previous versions was that someone could only Dodge one out of the three Lightning Attacks (more if they had Step Aside/Wall of Steel, but in general they got three attacks and you only got one dodge). Compare that to Full-Auto, where getting lots of DOS on your Dodge roll meant you could avoid heaps of incoming fire. Now, as both types of attacks follow the same rules, you can Dodge or Parry a bunch of HTH hits with a single roll, rather than avoiding one and then getting ganked by the other two. I like it quite a bit.

The Achilus Assault, a supplement for Deathwatch, is now available for download at drivethrurpg.com and rpgnow.com!

    A massive war front

Then, visit drivethrurpg.com or rpgnow.com to download your copy today!

I'll definitely borrow the new swift and lightning attacks for my deathwatch game and possibly the change in the bonuses (I'm 50/50 on that one at the moment) but I'll still keep anything more than a standard attack as a full action though.

A quote from the RPG subforum response. I'm definitely liking the pathfinder-esque consolidation of skills and will definitely incorporate those too. My traditional deathwatch campaign drifted apart and my restart will act more like a convention style game with pregenerated characters that players just choose from a pile of sheets at the center of the table and requisition already done to avoid the hour plus delay before the start of in game activity. Since I'm the one making up the stuff, I at least have the power to tweak the character sheets.

If they don't, that's going to be a very short book. Half the loyalist legions have already been covered and the backstory, rules, trappings, and tables for the others would only fill up something the size of the booklet that comes with the GM screen. While I agree that its a bit odd (yet welcome) given the history of the deathwatch forming thousands of years after the heresy, it can't hurt to have the traitor legions in an appropriately titled book to be used for NPCs and the odd "i wanna be grimdark drizzt, hurr!" player.

I retract my post anyways, I had to go back and look at the announcement and they said in black and white that it covers both the 9 Loyalist and 9 Traitor Legions.

The way they word it makes it sound like the Traitor Nine are going to be kind of detailed but not as much as the Loyalists, which suits me just fine.

The changes to the bonuses are what makes the system work. Taking this method of combat and combining it with the weapon stats from the Deathwatch errata rebalances DW so that it's not such a damned cakewalk for the Marines.

Fallen Suns is very cool. Like the bit where a group of Harli's take you through the webway... and you have to fight off a Daemonette attack!

And the next Dark Heresy book is here...

Announcing The Chaos Commandment, an adventure for Dark Heresy

“There is no shame in knowledge, and no physical or mental ailment that cannot be treated with the right application of technology. The Priests of Mars have the right of it. Flesh is weak, but their myopic dogma blinds them to the true potential of augmetics. What I have created here doesn’t simply replace or repair flesh; it allows one to transcend humanity itself.”
    –Lord Viktor Drajkon

A conspiracy at the highest levels of the Calixian Church has finally come to fruition, and the sector rests on the edge of interstellar upheaval. Can you and your fellow Acolytes prevent this coming apocalypse?

Fantasy Flight Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of The Chaos Commandment, an adventure for Dark Heresy! The final chapter in The Apostasy Gambit trilogy (and also playable as a standalone adventure), this epic story pits a small band of Acolytes against an ancient and powerful threat.

    A fight for your lives

For more on this exciting adventure, we turn to Dark Heresy’s lead developer:

Throughout The Apostasy Gambit, Inquisitorial Acolytes have been combating the Maledictor’s Hand, an apocalyptic conspiracy deeply-rooted within the Imperial Church. The goal of this conspiracy is to throw down the ruling nobility and cleanse the Calixis Sector of these “sinners” by fomenting a holy war that will cleanse the debased black heart of the Sector with sacred fire. The Chaos Commandment concludes this trilogy, which began in Black Sepulchre and continued in The Church of the Damned, and the ending will be truly apocalyptic!

This adventure will present challenges of all types and levels to players. They will lead armoured assaults against enemy installations, conduct investigations against powerful individuals, and even fight for their lives out in the cold dark of space. The players will see everything from huge firefights involving masses of troops, to smaller but no less deadly attacks of only handfuls of Acolytes (or even single characters) fighting for their lives against truly horrific foes.

    Lasting consequences

All this leads up to the conflict against the true power behind the conspiracy, which has been manipulating events and people across the Sector. As this is the grand finale to the trilogy, players can expect a foe that will exceptionally terrifying and powerful. Will the players find it in time, and even if they do will they have the strength and will to confront it?

Make no mistake, the outcomes of this adventure will send ripples across the Sector and through future Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay books, and players will know their actions either saved the Sector (for awhile at least), or let it collapse. So grab your bolter and Inquisitorial Rosette, and get ready to fight!

Prepare to stand against the greatest threat the Calixis Sector has ever seen! Check back for more on The Chaos Commandment in the coming weeks, and look for it on store shelves in the first quarter of 2012.

That should be good, the other two have been pretty sweet.

... IIRC anyway.. all the systems and books are starting to blur together a little bit

    anyway

“A prison world is no different than any other Imperial world. All are mills that grind human grist for the corpse-god’s wars. Why shouldn’t they grind for me, instead?”
    – Magister Khalistim Bhewko

A windswept Imperial penal world silently orbits its dimming sun, perilously close to the dark influence of Chaos. To claim such a prize for the Ruinous Powers would bring great favour and glory to you and your fellow Heretics, and its substantial resources would help lay the foundation for your own Black Crusade. But welcoming this world into the roiling bosom of the Screaming Vortex will be no easy task, and the planet holds its own dangerous secrets. Can you bring the corrupting gifts of Chaos to this forgotten world?

Fantasy Flight Games is excited to announce the upcoming release of Hand of Corruption, an adventure in three acts for Black Crusade! Presented in one comprehensive volume, Hand of Corruption is an epic story that takes you and your fellow Heretics from the swirling depths of the Screaming Vortex to the far reaches of the Calixis Sector, and then to a parched and windswept Imperial penal world called Saint Annard’s Penance. With a host of challenges designed to appeal to a range of group types and play styles, Hand of Corruption offers ample opportunities for both savvy roleplaying and gruelling combat.

    To build an army

For more on Hand of Corruption, here’s a word from Black Crusade’s lead developer:

As the first book for the Black Crusade line, Hand of Corruption explores one of the fascinating premises first introduced in the Core Rulebook. For the first time in Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay, the players can play characters completely opposed to the Imperium, and Hand of Corruption brings that theme directly to the fore. The Heretics are pitted against the Imperium from the start, and have to infiltrate, deceive, and ultimately fight Imperial forces head on to get what they want. And what they want is nothing less than control of an entire planet full of psychopathic, dangerous, violent prisoners—perfect fodder for the players’ eventual Black Crusade!

Of course, to get there, the players have to go toe to toe with some of the Imperium’s best and brightest—the types of individuals they might have been playing as characters in another Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay line. Plus, this adventure throws plenty of pitfalls along the players’ route. I wouldn’t want to reveal any spoilers, but it’s an adventure Game Masters should have a lot of fun springing on their players, and players should have a lot of fun playing through.

Keep checking back for more on Hand of Corruption in the coming weeks, and look for it on store shelves in the first quarter of 2012!

Well... probably? The BC rulebook has conversion rules for the differences between the two systems, but if you're intending to leave your advance scheme behind, I'm not sure how that would work.

Can't say much obviously, but testing this one was an interesting experience. Or, to put it another way - I hope you took Willpower advances because by the Emperor are you going to need them!!!

FWIW, I wrote two of the scenarios for Hand of Corruption. I suspect that players may find this one exceptionally challenging.
