I think the ott windicator is a slight troll on me, but I'll take it in stride and comment on the jet bike

I really do like the bike. They look very reasonable and not ott. Like a baby Sammy bike.

Knightley, that hover bike is looking awesome, man. I really like all the subtle details you've added and the brass etch icons really work well.

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - Agreed, if only there was more options and I didn't have to get them from FW.

@WM - you caught me out, I know you like simple yet effective models but I couldn't resist going OTT on that one the Whirlwind turret can come off so most of the time I'll just use it as a Vindi.

@Proto - Sadly it will be the last Jetbike for a long time (until I choose to really expand on them)

@Moltar - Thanks, being the Sgt of the squad I had to add a little bit more to the model

Update: The last of the dry fits, the Thunderfire. I had considered chopping the barrel completely off and putting in a Gatling Psylincer from the dreadknight however I only have two of those and they are going onto the Felblade so I was stuck with stock standard, The only thing I could really change up is the armored shrouds on the side.

Right

I'm away this weekend so there won't be any updates but next week will be primer spraying then onto painting

I like the relatively low key use of the etch actually. Have you considered, given that you also run these as vanilla, doings contemptor?

I'd could say that the Contemptor has lost its edge in the vast flood since release but instead i'll 3rd the vote since i know yours would be a refreshing wave of awesome!

Oh and 30,000 gallery votes?! Jesus wept! that's a lot of clicking. Well done!

@Leohart - Thanks

@Swordwind - I also see what you did there (see below for your quote brought to life)

@Graven - I had considered it, but at the end of this I'll end up with 5 walkers so I will need to think hard about if I want another one.

@Proto - Yeah, I think I could do it justice, the problem is getting it over here from FW,

@LSC'L - There has been lots of Contemptor's around, I guess that does speak volumes about how awesome they are. Also thanks for noticing the gallery votes, My aim is to get to 33,333 votes (I was dared to by another DCM last year) and I'm slowly ticking away at it)

@Logg_Frod - metal ones? I remember assembling my one and it was a nightmare!

@M0rdain - Liking how your going with the converting! the skull on top is ace!

Update: We'll the LAN I went to on the weekend left me shattered and it's taken me two days to get through all the priming. On to adding paint to them now First up is Git's Apoth.

@Zari - Thanks man, I usually can work pretty quickly with the building of models so I suspect that's why I come across as a little prolific in that respect

@Proto - Sounds like a plan, however let me get through the majority of the models I have before I spend up again.

Looking really good. I use the normal shot most of the time but the anti-cover shot can be really useful along with the one that turns the ground in DT. Can be useful to stop tanks.

Looking good as all ways. Not many people do use the Dt shot on tanks or anything for that matter and if the rolls go your way it can put a cannon shaped spanner into the works.

@E_C - I think I'll get onto the thunderfire after I finish lorna's marines and WM's plasma cannon marine. stay tuned shouldn't be more than a couple of weeks away time permitting.

Bit late in the game for me to suggest his, but wouldn't it have been pretty cool if on the first marine, he had scratches across his face in the same places that they are on his helmet? Attention to detail and what not.

Beautiful miniatures as always though.

@Gits - Thanks Git's I used the robe trial I did on your marine for the robes etc on this squad, I think it looks much better than my other robes now.... dangit.

@Moltar - Thanks, I'm sure Lorna will find a use for them

@C C - Thanks, I learned pretty quick good photo's can make or break good models, thanks for stopping by!

@Lorna - Cheers, fingers crossed they will get over to you with minimum damage, I suspect the squad leader (marine 5 with the staff) may be a little difficult, but I'll wrap them up as well as I can.

@Ghosty - Your right, I actually hadn't thought about it in that way, I should have done an abrasion on the other marine and scratches on the pointy helmeted one as well, good idea, noted for the future,

Update: Guide on the robes (I took last night off from painting and was playing the beta of Path of Exile)

Stage 1: I started with a base coat of Calathan Brown and gave the robe a Devlan mud wash, wait for it to dry.

Stage 2: this was a watered down coat of vermin brown and bleached bone 3:1 ratio

Stage 3: again more watered down vermin and bleached 1:1

Stage 4: watered down vermin and bleached 1:3

Stage 5: watered down Bleached bone only

Stage 6: Bleached bone and skull white 1:1 and applied to very raised edges allowing for the last pass of skull white to sit on top of it leaving more of this layer below

Stage 7: Skull white highlight

Update: working on WhaleMusic's Plasma Cannoneer, base colors and wash applied, I think I need a new black wash, I ended up scraping the bottom of the pot to cover this guy.

@Leohard - Indeed, chainsaws in the hands of females are an extremely scary proposition! I've played about 7 games with my Spacemarine army, I think i've lost 2 won 1 and had 4 draws. with the last game being an 1850 point game!

@C C - yes I agree, I would think the most awesome would have to go to "Half as good as a wink to a blind bat" I decided for a nondescript chest piece as there is a hurring great plasma cannon blocking most of it up.

@NF09 - Thanks mate, your Honor guard are looking tight as well

Just got home, lovely surprise waiting inside. Your squad arrived today. Only thing broken was sword arm on the libby looking dude.

Gotta say, your painting looks amazing on here. In real life it is completely jaw dropping.

Yours are coming along nicely got two ust about finished, should have the rest done by the rest of the weekend.

@Graven - Cheers man, it was an accident but one that looks semi decent

@M.K - Cheers

@Gits - They are a complete nightmare to assemble, are they metal or resin (in fact do they even make them in finecast?)

@Lorna - Oh wow, they got to your neck of the woods quickly! how badly was the break on the squad leader (he's the one with the staff) something easy enough to fix I hope?

@ Knightly, it's almost as if the emperors personal thunderhawk dropped them off. And that would explain the scorch marks outside my house. And the whole sword arm had come off, dab of glue and good as new.

loving the thunderfire cannon.

Also, your squad will be delayed as i'm having to move for a new job so possible 2 weeks before done. Probably sooner, but would rather not risk the guess.

@Norn King - Thanks man, its been a long slog looking through all those gallery pics.

@Gits - Thanks, my advice. run away, run away fast this thing is a nightmare...

@Lorna - Wouldn't you know it, out of all the marines I assembled that was the only arm not to have been pinned, imagine the chances eh. Congrats on the new job btw I look forward to more updates when you get started on them

@Graven - Yeah I was taking a trip down memory lane and a lot of the comments were about crisp and clean coverage. Oh and after reading Git's guide on blogging "give it a catchy name" I figured I best come up with one, not original I know but every one should get the jist of it.

@Leo - Cheers Leo, Yep you got it. Edge highlighted with Mithril silver, Looks pretty good from a distance

@Bigfish - Thank you!

@LSC'L - Not a different red, more that there is to much of it, you can see that pipes/tubing/joints are all red and there is no other real color to the model so I plan on changing that should make him more awesome.

@M.K - Thanks, Good point about adding something more to it, I had considered more skulls, but I think having perhaps the Nurgle head impaled on a NFS would have been the better option

@Zari - Thanks man, it didn't take me long to concept/paint either so with it ending up with an implied effect is a tasty bonus! also would you suggest a sepia wash for the skulls?

@Graven - Good point, I'll see if I can do something about that, I only have it a once over coat of skill wash so perhaps another might darken it up.

@Moltar - No worries mate, I'm stoked your posting here quite a bit

Man, I'm always happy to post here, Knightley. I just don't always have the time. I'm often dakka-ing while on the job. You're product is so consistent and so crisp. I truly enjoy your work and am happy to offer up any criticism or comments when I have something worth saying. I'm never too far from dakka, even when I'm not posting. I'm great at lurking these forums. I need to get my stuff back on track though. I've been away from the paints since, I believe September. That's not good. Got to get back in a groove.

Predator is coming along very nicely. It's been too long since we've seen you tackle a vehicle. Excited for what's to come.

Since, I don't play 40k and I just paint, I tend to do whatever strikes my mood. The last thing I did was a Chimp Fist Terminator, which is a gorilla in Terminator Armor. My blog link is in my sig. Hopefully, soon, I will be able to get back in to it and bust some stuff out.

@Graven - Streaks? I can't say I've experienced it, Typically I use the least amount of Glue I can to get a model to stick together. Since it's only me picking the guys up I don't have to worry about heavy handed kids/klutz causing breakages.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2012/04/11 01:07:53

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - Hahah, I see what you did there. "Blows you away" and it's a tank. Nicely done.

@Leohart - Cheers, I can see I missed some squiggles on the top hatch marine on his red shoulder pad, I must fix that.

@Lorna - I would totally use that if I could get my hands on one!

@M.K - Cheers

@C L - thanks, I can offer tip's that help me out, but they may not be suited for you however here goes.

I paint in sections, for this tank the body didn't have the sides or the top stuck down so I could break up the large model into smaller and easier to manage littler parts I left the sponsons off and the turret assembled again so I didn't get stuck with a huge model to paint. For me this works great as I can tick of parts that are done.
As you've undoubtedly seen I do multiple thin coats of grey to get it clean and crisp there are some parts I do again as even with two thin coats its not quite clean enough

I also forgot to mention, the side sponsons are held in place by magnets, you can see on the front left picture the sponson looks like its sticking out a bit far, it is but only due to me not seating it right for the picture, it sits flush (as seen in the back left shot)

Update: I wanted to paint something not grey before I jump into the next round of GMS marines so I figure how about a black servitor eh?

Post by: Knightley

@CadianXV - Cheers, I also see what you did there and it was well done

@Gits - well I started off just doing a black wash and devlan wash over primer white, thinking it would make it look pretty cool. It didn't. Next step was to just cover his hair in adeptus battle grey then black wash it 3-4 times, I think picked out the raised hair with codex grey then gave it one more blast of black wash. Simple yet it looks good. Also thanks I think this face ranks in my top 5 I've done.

@Graven - Cheers, I usually have a good idea of how a model will look with parts but some times the model changes that (usually due to the placement of the backpack and the size of the shoulderpads.

@Norn - Depends on the day really, some night I'll get an hour in some nights can be up to three hours and on weekends can be the whole day (although that hasn't been the case recently) Motivation wise? I think I wanted to get my army listed somewhere in it's entirety and I personally want to ensure it's regularly updated (at the moment that's every day has a picture posted) and to top it off I like getting replies on this blog so that's one of my major motivations.

nice job, very muted tones. Hmm, that would make an interesting Deldar scheme. Nudge, poke .

@Gits - Hahaha, quite reminiscent of how Ye ol' English Sailors were drafted into the Navy. Waking up with a hangover on a ship, perhaps without the hurring great thing on their faces.

@Graven - Poke taken, I don't think I'd do a DE force, mainly because the only guy I face currently uses DE and I really don't want to copy him, Eldar perhaps

@Tipios - Welcome back, I trust you enjoyed your time away, hopefully it wasn't due to strenuous circumstances?

Knightley yea it was a bummer for a bit since I had to move my hobby table and clean up and sorta left me in the dumps. But now getting back into the flow with the Warmachine stuff (yea yea my GK and DA on hold for a bit) and several comissions and that can make it more like work then fun. But most of my customers models was fun to paint so no work here.

I am loving that last GK that pose is like a RT throw back with his knife and as usual came out awsome!! and loving the retinue you got going can't wait to see all of it done together.

@Vit - Thanks, I wanted to add more to it but I also didn't want the model to steal the attention away from the inquisitor (who is yet to be done)

@GD1 - Shame about the GK/DA on hold you had some really awesome models in there, fingers crossed you get back to them soon

Update: Repaint of the cherub is done (quickly as I was happy with the skin and the book)

Ooh, lovely job there. Skin looks really fresh and vibrant now. Want to get some of those old metal retinue figures, but can't justify the ebay spendathon it would entail.

@Vit - Cheers man, I was really happy with how he came out, nothing over the top but still something a little special

@Graven - Danke

@Gits - Thank you

@N K - Hahah it would be awesome to get that to fit, but I do believe its from a tank sprue with IG on it, just not sure which one it was.

Update: Last retinue started:

Post by: whalemusic360

It's from the baneblade sprue. At least one comes with the baneblade. I used mine on sm scouts, it looks a tad to big for IG. I think it's due to the feedsack though. Paint looks spot as per use.

YESSS, SQUIGGLES!

I must say Knightley, I am very envious of your squiggle ability. I mean, if squiggles were a tactical squad, you'd be the sergeant. If squiggles were an HQ, you'd be the special character. If squiggles were a way of life, you'd be Doctor Phil.........

Post by: Knightley

@WM360 - Usually I can squeeze in a game once a month or if the guy I usually plays is up for it twice a month, we're pretty even at the moment. We've tied about 70% of our games which imo suits me just fine.

@M.K - For me I found I had a ton of time when I stopped playing WoW, I have a nasty feeling that the pending release of D3 will slow me down something fierce.

Update; realised that Njal wanted a black blade on his model, so adjusted that color, Second stage grey done

Very nice Interceptor, Knightley! Very crisp & clean (and grey). I really like the contrasting red on the storm bolter and glaive. For the writing shoulder pad, etc., did you actually paint yhat on or did you use a micron pen?

I thought you were, concentrate on saving! Hopefully for more lovely models!

Btw, is it just me or is your painting improving? I didn't think there was much room for improvement at the level you are at but everything seems smoother and sharper recently. Nothing i can put my finger on though, it's very hard to pick out changes when your caliber of painting is so high!

@C L - Not sure, perhaps over time doing a similar scheme allows me to focus on doing it right instead of just doing it?, thank you for the compliment by the way, I don't really consider my self a top notch painter, just some one who enjoys that part of the hobby

@Lorna - Yay, I really look forward to any progress shots you may end up with!

@Tipios - Cheers, Njal's marines all have purple blades so I tried to match his, looks like I may have pulled it off
