So I am back from Germany and (mostly) over the jetlag, so what better way to celebrate than to start to paint models. I wanted to work out the test scheme for the custodes with my own twist. I will be painting the face plates white like in master of mankind and have the shoulder pads done in metallic red in certain places. So far I am really liking the models, but I still have to finish the base along with the spear and the eye lenses. So tell me what you all think!
Im liking the white face plates, looking at the plume on yours reminds me I should probably put another wash on mine to make the threads stand out more.
VictorVonTzeentch wrote: Im liking the white face plates, looking at the plume on yours reminds me I should probably put another wash on mine to make the threads stand out more.
I thought I would hate the plumes but they are growing on me.
Well another WIP post, this time it is for a 5 man squad of custodes (mainly being painted for my local GW competition), I wanted to do a minimum squad size but with the new edition the custodes squads are now 5 man squads instead of 3. So this squad/WIP will consist of 3 guardians, 1 sentinel and 1 hetaeron (who will be getting a cape so he can pass off as a shield captain for 40k).
I hope to have these guys done before the weekend is out.
VictorVonTzeentch wrote: Looking good there man. Did you manage to get them done over the weekend?
Actually I finished painting the cape about 15 minutes ago (I had to wait for a color to come from amazon before I could start it). I should be gluing it on tomorrow and taking better pictures then.
Also this was my first time using this sorta wet blending technique that I learned from Jan and his stream (thanks again buddy) but I don't think I got it as good as he did but I tried

Damn man looking good.
Thanks man!
Well as promised I finally got around to taking proper pictures of my custodes and for those that have followed this thread for a while I think I finally got the lightbox picture set up down right with this set of pictures. Not shown in this collage is the sentinel as he didn't really fit in with the layout. But up next I plan on trying to finish my blackshields or maybe I should just finish my custodes I don't know right now . Tell me what you all think I should work on next!
Nicely done! great bold gold you've got, I also like the back of the cloak the lightest little highlight on the top parts and prominent fold, it adds enough for your eye to follow the softer blending while using almost an edge highlight, all in all the force looks great ! :-)

Thanks man! I am really happy with the cape, but I was lucky to learn the paint recipe from a much more talented painter than myself
WarbossDakka wrote: Well done on the gold. It is very easy to much up the shading on gold, but you seem to have got the shadow and light on it perfectly. Well done.
Thanks man! I am really happy with them and I am even considering putting the blackshields to the side to finish the army before summer break is over
Well today was a slow day and I only really washed the custodes pallas and the blackshields javelin landspeeder, along with building another hetaeron custodes using the left over event only custodes weapon. I also started to paint the marine for the spear dreads base and once again am doing a sons of horus marine. I was able to cut the shooting arm on the dread and re position it facing more downwards so it looks like the dread has killed the marine in his last ditch effort to slow down or destroy the dread.
Slow day today, mainly consisted of building. But I was able to at least build the javelin speeder for my blackshields, along with building and priming the custodes pallas for my 30k army. I also was able to stop off at my local GW and get the new 8th ed rulebook along with index imperium 1 and 2 and I have decided that my army for 8th ed will be a custodes and primaris marine mix so that I can actually field an army fairly quickly . I was also able to get one of the new demo models and I primed and sprayed him with leadbelcher to prep him to become a test model for my ultramarine scheme for the future primaris army.
Also I found one of my old BaC dreadnoughts that I had just basecoated black, I am thinking of just getting it off of its base and re purposing it for my 40k custodes since they only can take venerable contemptor dreads and none of the other cool toys they had from 30k.
Heretic Tom wrote: The speeder has really got a dynamic look to it, I'm excited to see it painted.
I really want to get some paint on it as well! Though that action shot was more the result of my putting stuff together without looking at the instructions than my dynamic posing prowess
boundless08 wrote: Hey man great blog. I've just blasted through this in a week and wowzers, you got some nice armies there.
Love the mechanicus but have to say those custodes are just amazeballs. They're just great, simple as. Subbed and looking forward to more
Thank you very much for the kind words! I do have a problem with never finishing armies though
Well today was kinda slow day, I was only able to really wash the next 4 custodes models (two sentinels, one hetaeron and Valdor) then paint the face of valdor and his cape along with the hetaerons plus start to layer the gold. But I was looking at my models and what I have and I can feasibly finish this army before july is out if I do it right.
Custard Marines are looking fantastic Ustrello. Great job. White faceplates is an excellent touch. Cant wait to see the grav tank getting some painty love
evildrcheese wrote:Looking good. Keep plugging away. Looking forward to seeing what you do with the Custodian hover tank.

Thanks EDC! I hope to have it done in a month or less to be honest
Januine wrote:Custard Marines are looking fantastic Ustrello. Great job. White faceplates is an excellent touch. Cant wait to see the grav tank getting some painty love
Thanks jan! I am glad you like the face plates, I feel like they give the model some more character than the silver ones. Also same here but I keep on buying more custodes stuff and I need to stop
Well as the title states I got some reinforcements today. Specifically a grav carrier for my 30k custodes and it is a large model like spartan large so hopefully it isn't as bad of a kit that my fire raptor was. I also started to make my primaris marines (bonus points to anyone who can guess what chapter they will be and a hint they won't be black power armor ) and when making my 2k list (a primaris/custodes elite list) I found myself left with 150ish points so I decided I will add a 40 man conscript squad with a commissar. What will the commissar model be? The DKoK quartermaster model, which I will be stripping and giving him a power sword and a bolt pistol.
Fluffwise my idea will be that the custodes/primaris strike force got a distress call from a guard training planet where they go to assist and make sure that the regiments can still be trained. But they are being trained by DKoK members after the successful trails that were conducted in the book "Dead men walking" by Steve Lyons.
Alright so today was another building day, but it should be one of the last for a bit. So first up was the last bit of the dark imperium primaris marines, building the 2 LTs, captain, ancient, 5 intercessors and 5 hellblasters all of which were very nice and easy models to put together.
Lastly was the custodes grav carrier which is a large model (spartan sized) and the cast wasn't so good so it required some hot water and creative cutting to fix but it still looks pretty damn good. I put one of the primaris marines next to it for scale. So what is next you ask? I will go about finishing the rest of the custodes and then start my work on the primaris marines. I did do some testing to see, and a bolt pistol on the DkoK model looks massive, probably due to the fact that the DKoK models were true scaled compared to the regular plastic IG so IG weapons look huge on them. So what do you all think, should I cut away the las pistol and add a bolt pistol or leave it.
youwashock wrote: Just gonna toss a little more praise the commissar's way. Great model.
Thanks man, though I plan on stripping him soon
Today was a bit of a slow day, but I got some more work done on this next batch of custodes. They should only have one more session of painting, then a few days for the water effects. After these guys I will probably finish up the remaining hetaerons and sentinals then build some more guardians for the 40k portion of the army (plus they work well in 30k).
Just about done with these guys, all that is left is for me to do is to paint the rims of the bases, clean up any mistakes and put in the second application of water effects. After that I will paint one more Hetaeron to round out the custodes to 10. Because of the recent edition change and FW leaving 30k hanging for now I am putting all 30k on the back burner until that is all cleared up. So with that I have to make sure my 40k list is at least playable, and to do that I need to have 10 spear custodes. So far I have 3 and then Valdor which will stand in for a shield captain. After that I will use my Hetaeron to supplement the other custodes putting me at 8 spears total meaning I will make another 3 man guardian squad for 30k and just use it in 40k for now along with making one of the standard bearer guys.
Also I was able to find some land raiders cheaper than what GW was selling them for so I have to make sure I complete those as well to round out the custodes portion of the army. After that I have the primaris marines and the krieg conscripts. Looking at it I can have this army done before I leave for school and the gaming scene there is more 40k anyways so it would be better to have a 40k army.
As promised here is another 3 of my custodes, this time 2 sentinels and 1 more hetaeron. My original plan for the rest of my summer break stands, but I believe I will try and add a armies on parade board so I have less to worry about when the new semester starts.
So a while back I posted my kit bashed version of Valdor and I finally got around to finishing him. Up next is probably the 2 venerable land raiders for my 40k custodes (I found 2 cheap ones online) and thankfully I found out that Vallejo makes a auric gold air brush paint equivalent so my custodes vehicles just got a lot easier to paint!
WarbossDakka wrote:Very smart gold armour. The glowing effect on the Power weapon is very well executed!
I can't take all the credit I followed duncans scheme closely bar some personal changes like the shoulder pads and face plates
Well both of my reclaimed land raiders came in over the past two days, one of which is kind of a disaster and needs to be stripped and fixed a tad, and the other thankfully was just a sprue so I was able to build that myself. I also built another guardian squad to even out my spear count to 10 for my 40k list (I won't be using swords and boards for that army). I also found out that vallejo makes a airbrush paint equivalent for auric armor gold so I ordered that up so my vehicles will hopefully be much easier to paint now.
So I don't quite remember if anyone guess it, but this post will be giving away what chapter I will be doing. And that chapter is the ultramarines, I wanted to paint something that wasn't black or red and I have a bottle of blue clear paint laying around and the box came with ultramarine transfers so it made a lot of sense. So while waiting on some airbrush paints I decided to get a head start and finish the banner, along with getting the gold down on the last 3 guardians and the venerable land raider. I also will be getting my second 8th edition game in tomorrow against my friends tough imperial guard list (who thought that would be a sentence a few months ago ), so expect some cool pictures from that.
Paradigm wrote:Great work on the banner, very cool and I look forward to seeing your.take on Ultramarines.
Thanks para I am pretty happy with it actually! Its my first time doing blue in a long while
WarbossDakka wrote:I like your thinking on choosing Ultras, why waste money on new paints when you have perfectly good ones right?
Exactly, then I can actually do a color besides black, red or gold for once haha
well today was a bit of a slow day, I got the basecoat down on all of the primaris marines and hopefully will be starting the zenithal highlighting soon. After that it is getting the blue clear paint down and doing the details. My plans for after that will be to start my armies on parade board so I can finish it before the semester starts, and hopefully finish the custodes (3 more guardians to go and 2 land raiders). After that I got to strip and paint the 40 DKoK models that will be standing in for my conscripts and the quartermaster/commissar.
So I took a look at my school schedule for next semester and I realized something. With my current class load I will not have a lot of time to do an AoP board, so I decided to put some things off for a few weeks to finish that board before the semester starts so all I have left to do is just the models which should be easy. I gathered all of my supplies over the past few days and got my 2x2 board and put plaster cloth on the base to start. Up next I will be making the mountain and getting it ready for the plaster etc.
So I made the mountain today and covered it in plaster. Sadly I had it the wrong way when I was plastering it so, the space I left open for glue is actually on top. But I will just cover that and figure out another way to get it to stay on the board. I also painted in what will be the frozen lake and ringed it with glue to create a barrier for the realistic water. Hopefully I will start put the carving plaster and rock molds on the mountain before the weekend is out so I can start to carve the strata lines.
So I am away from home for the weekend, so work on the board is stopped for now. But I was able to bring some more of my custodes with me, though I lacked my daylight lamps so my painting time was limited. When I am back tomorrow I should be putting down the plaster and the cast rocks on the board before the day is out.
I got back home yesterday and after doing a few chores around the house I got some more work in on my custodes and even started to cast the rocks for my AoP board. I hope to get some more work in on my ultramarines though tonight getting the zenthial highlights down and maybe the clear paint.
These guys are almost done, just gotta clean up some details, finish the bases and the blades of the spears. Sadly I was not able to do the ultramarines tonight, but I picked out my scheme for the krieg models and started prep work on the venerable land raider
combat engineer wrote: Good morning Ustrello. Can we get a size comparison of the Primaris and Custodes marines please?
Mat
Spoiler:
A quick Google found me this. Custodes and Primaris are basically the same size.
Yeah they are pretty much the same size which annoys me fluff wise but I still like the models a lot.
Well I finished the last 3 custodes tonight, and got some more work in on my board. I placed the rocks on the base of the board and on the mountain, I also put the realistic water in the lake and will be adding the ice water tomorrow. I also got to paint the rocks before I add the snow and get the carving plaster down on the mountain.
combat engineer wrote: Thanks much! The Custodes are bigger than the Astartes in the fluff. I wasn't sure if we're going to be Primaris size.
Your Custodes look great. Just ordered a small starter force.
Mat
Glad I could help! And nice the custodes are a joy to paint.
Well I finished the last three custodes today (I still have more models just this part of the list is done) and to celebrate I took a quick family shot. I also put the second layer of realistic water in and added the white pigment to represent ice and I think it worked out fairly well. This weekend will be busy for me with real life stuff so I do not expect to get much done model wise besides maybe stripping some krieg models. But I hope to be back on it by monday.
I am waiting on the right weather to airbrush as I have to do it in my garage and the weather here has been hot humid and rainy for the past week. So I decided to get some more work in on my armies on parade board. This time I painted the rocks on the base of the board and some random patches of rock to show through where there will be lighter amounts of snow. Though I may just go and do the whole board one I paint the mountain because I have limited pigments for this and I don't want to run out before I finish the mountain. I also got the carving plaster done on the mountain and will be carving it later tonight, I got lucky as it took around 10 cups of the plaster to do the mountain and the box only came with 12ish .
So as promised I cut the strata lines into the mountain and even was able to paint it. I went with a more grey neutral scheme, though I had to make my own homemade "cement" to seal it in (a mixture of wood glue and water). I should be gluing that down to the board soon and then getting the snow on the board as well along with the waterfall.
I also did a test figure for my DKoK counts as conscripts models, I decided to go with a green this time around. I am liking the green, black and metal so far. But I am struggling with the leather bits, I originally went with a doombull brown washed with nuln oil and highlighted with wazdakka red and squig orange but it may be too red for the green. Should I just do classic leather instead? What do you all think.
The weather here has not been cooperating recently so I have't gotten anything related to current 40k army done. But I recently found 5 more of my death riders so I decided to take one of them and use the new scheme on him. I am really liking the dark metal and the green and the brown/redish leather is starting to grow on me. I am also tinkering with a new basing idea since the plain Valhallan snow texture paint seems to be not as good as I though it would be. So I will base the models first with astrogranite and darken it up with nuln oil and cover it mostly with the Valhallan blizzard.
So most of the day was spent studying for the graduate school exam so I did not get a whole lot done. But I got the snow down on the board and glued the mountain down on the board as well. I will probably put a second coat down if there are any glaring areas. I also completed my new scheme on the death rider which I think I will include a unit or two in my lists if the conscripts ever get nerfed.
Well it has been a slow few days, but I got the general layout of the AoP board done. All that is left is to put down the krieg casualties and the blown up land raider part amongst the primaris marines. My second land raider also came in so the custodes have their second ride finally in.
So I finally got around to using my airbrush and got the auric gold equivalent down on the land raider sadly it pooled in one or two spots when I wasn't paying attention so I hope to fix that tomorrow. I also got the first zenthial highlight done on the primaris marines, and I just need to do the 2nd one with the highest silver and then I can use the blue clear paint on them.
So a rather large update today, I was able to get the gold down on the second land raider, and airbrush most of the destroyed one that will go on my AoP board. But I was able to do the zenthial highlights and clear paint on the primaris marines today. All that is left is doing the other detail work and figuring out what good colors would be. I am thinking of following the color scheme for the bolters and various weapons from the codex, and for the trim I am thinking of doing gold to keep the metallic feel to the army. For some reason the pictures washed out the color on the marines so note that they are different in real life (hopefully I will get a better picture later).
Today I mostly finished the ancient with just the sealing of transfers left and I got about half of the work left on the 1st intercessor squad done as well.
Something about the Primaris stuff lends itself really well to the shiny gloss metal look. Probably the larger surface areas catching the light better. Great work!
Shiney and chrome they will ride eternal...wait wrong quote
Paradigm wrote:Something about the Primaris stuff lends itself really well to the shiny gloss metal look. Probably the larger surface areas catching the light better. Great work!
That is my guess also being lankier allows for more spots to be hit by that 90 degree angle spray so it seems brighter
So I may or may not of bought a redemptor dreadnought and kitted it out to deal with horde armies (two onslaught cannons). It was a fun kit to build and one of the more intricate models/dreadnoughts that I have had to build in the past. The hip joints were what got me the most, as seems the case with most multi pose models. But I think I got the pose down and I added a potent new weapon to my army for when the conscript nerf comes
Azazelx wrote: I really like the lacquered armour look you got on those Ultra Primaris models. How did you achieve it exactly?
Sure! I was planning on doing it today anyways. (all airbrush and airbrush paints)
So first we start off with an all over coat of Vallejo gun metal grey
Then you do a 45 degree angle of Valleo chainmail silver
After that you do a 90 degree angle (so hitting the model from directly above) with Vallejo silver (its okay to cheat a little and hit small areas that would possibly get the light from the light source like the back of legs top of knees etc)
Then you recess shade the model, around rivets in corners etc with nuln oil
Then you hit the model with 2-3 coats of FW calth blue clear paint (I tend to do around 2 1/2 to 3 coats because I like the darker blue)
Then you go onto details etc, and make sure to use transfers to help break up the amounts of blue
Really great tutorual you can easily use this technique to paint alpha legion, thousand sons or really any other legion just by switching out that clear blue for the colour of choice.
What are the FW clear paints like to work with, I use the Tamiya clear sometimes but it can be a pain due to being alcohol based, so I'm interested to hear first hand how they compare to the regular FW or GW paints especially when airbrushed.

Glad you like it! It is a very similar idea I use for the metallic red as well (I just sub silver for gold)
As for the FW clear paints they are a dream, they don't need to be thinned and it only takes 2-3 coats to get that nice color
For today I got most of the 1st intercessor squad complete, minus some touch ups and basing. I also started work on the redemptor dread so I can get the maximum points for the Imperium in the fate of konor campaign

Well I am about done with the first intercessor squad, and I did a solid chunk of the redemptor dreadnought as well. I am thinking of picking up an aggressor squad and kitting them out with the bolt gauntlets just to fill that last anti-horde slot. What do you all think?
angelofvengeance wrote: Hot damn, Ustrello! Nice work! Those are some of the best Ultramarines I've seen!

Well today was a flurry of activity, I finished the intercessors and finally decided to get pictures of them and the ancient done. I also pretty much finished the redemptor dreadnought minus sealing in the decals, and I decided to finally make a custodes with a vexilla because the rules for it are pretty gross and worth it in my opinion.

Thank you for the walkthrough/tutorial. Unfortunately I'm worse than garbage with my airbrush (I actually broke it somehow while cleaning it - well, while reassembling it) so I avoid using it at all and only rarely use the simple single-action, bottom feed gun that came with the compressor for scenery during summer. I'm sure I can do a lot of that with Spray cans, though.
The completed Redemptor, Primaris and Ancient really look amazing. Will you be using regular SM in your Ultramarine force, and if so, how will they be painted? I might end up answering my own question, since I'm going to go through your thread here from the start and worm my way through over awhile..
Are the FW clear paints any good to use with a regular brush as opposed to airbrush? I might order a bunch of them when I get paid next week.

Honestly you can do all of what I said with just a normal wide spray pattern airbrush pretty easily. I just get more spot focus with the 90 degree angle with my sotar 2020. As for the rest of the army I think I am going to stay small and elite, I may add some normal marines later to fill niche gaps like assault (especially since I got 10 assault marines still shrink wrapped).
As for the FW clears you can brush them on but I have not brushed them onto an entire model before. I have a test model that I can use with my clear red so I can get back to you on that, but I feel you could run into the same problems with brush on that you would with other super thin paints pooling, lots of thin coats to get a consistent solid color instead of 2 or so with an airbrush.
Well I finally finished the redemptor and just in time to get the 2 points for the imperium for the campaign. Up next I gotta bang out a custodes with vexilla, get the clear red paint on the custodes land raiders and get the clear blue down on an aggressor squad I am picking up on friday all before I head back to college.
evildrcheese wrote: I do feel tge need to reiterate how awesome the Redemptor Dread looks. The transfers really set it off.
EDC
Transfers are actually one of my more favorite parts of the model painting process and I love the old unification war aquilla so when I saw it on the sheet I had to include it anyway I could
Shifting gears a bit to get the last bit of airbrushing before I leave done, so I got some work in on the two venerable land raiders. For one of them I got the metallic red down and the other I got the 2nd layer base coat down (though looking at it I may have to go back and hit it again as it does not look as solid as the other). I also got some work in on the custodes vexilla, which I finally got around to reading rule wise and wondered why I never took it, getting the base colors down.
I leave for GenCon in four days and I am seriously considering picking up some custodes terminators if I can.
So life got in the way today so not much hobby work done, but I did get the base started and washes down on the vexilla and I put together the greyfax model for my talons of the emperor army today.
Paradigm wrote: Given the post's title, I think at the very least her hat should be bright red!
Banner Custodes looks good!
You just gave me a good idea! I will include that now
Well today was a slow day as I was only able to get the vexilla pretty much done and get the red metallic down on the 2nd land raider. I did find out why it was having some trouble sticking to the paint, it turns out that the forgeworld clear paints tend to slide a bit when it gets on vallejo paints which sucks cause that has what I have been using.
Anyways I am thinking about including 10 sisters of silence and a null maiden rhino in my potential armies as I have the sprues just sitting around. I don't think I will go for the great blades because I already have custodes, I was thinking either the flamers to hold an objective and never let go or bolters to do something on the cheap. What do you all think?
Well this is my final update before I go to GenCon and move into my apartment for the new semester. But this time I will be bringing my painting stuff so I won't be quite as active painting wise but I won't disappear like last year.
First up, I finally got the ice waterfall done after about 5 different tries and I am really liking it. And I finally got around to finishing the vexilla bearer. Since forgeworld will be at gencon I am thinking I will try and pick up some of the custodes terminators because the models look amazing and I really want to paint some
Woodland scenics water effects to create the outline, and then after letting it dry for 24 hours I then used woodland scenics realistic water mixed with a white pigment and let that dry for 24 hours.
Make sure to do this all on top of a non stick surface
So GenCon was quite fun this year, but I did not get much in the way of loot. Instead I decided to spend most of my money on an impulse purchase and that was of course the custodes terminators .
After looking over the models they are absolutely gorgeous and I cannot wait to get painting on them.
Sorry I've been away, but hot damn are your ultras fan-fraking-tastic.
I am totally jealous man. I'll have to go back and see if you posted how you achieved that... because its re-damn-diculous.
You should be super proud about how those guys turned out!
Thank you very much! I did post a painting guide a page or two ago so that should answer any questions you have.
Well I finally got around to building the terminators and man they are huge. They seemed to have captured that old school style while at the same time making them look good, while I am not playing 30k and these do not have 40k rules I will none the less try and get them painted up soon.
whalemusic360 wrote: First set of them I've seen getting worked on. Are they on the same bases as Centurions? I'd be interested to see some scale shots.
I was lucky I got them at GenCon because forgeworld brought some with them. And yes they are on 50mms, I don't have any with me but a youtuber did a size comparison/review for them
So I've settled into my new apartment fairly well and finally got around to painting. This time I am working on the last intercessor squad and one of the LTs for my battalion detachment for my ultramarines, I have gotten the gold faces and leather done, and am working on the silver bits. Sorry for the blurry picture I was super tired
So it has been a while hasn't it? School has been going well, but this semester has been tough so far so I haven't had much time to paint. But yesterday I was able to get some painting in and finish the base coating on the rest of the 2nd intercessor squad and the LT. I even was able to start work on the clear red for the sgt's helmet and the red stripe for the LT.
Also I am starting a small side project of a deathwatch kill team. Just a 5 man squad a captain and a razorback to fit a fully role in my army.
So I finally got around to finished the LT and the last 5 intercessors, and to do a change of pace I started work on the captain in gravis armor (of which I have the base coats down and the washes done). After the captain I will work on the hellblasters and the last LT. After that it will most likely be greyfax and finishing the custodes venerable land raiders. With that the models will be done for AoP and all that is left is to finish painting the temple which a friend is 3d printing for me.
Lastly a nice little family shot of what I have done for the ultramarines so far, 10 intercessors, 1 redemptor dread, 1 ancient, and 1 LT
boundless08 wrote: They look amazing man. That metallic blue is really gonna pop when they're on the board(I presume it will be the same snowy base as the mini bases)
Thanks! And yes the board will be, I think there are a few pictures of it a few pages back
Very nice, that's a striking little strike force! Are you planning on adding any of the other kits, or just sticking to the starter stuff and the Dread?
Those look phenomenal! The metallic blue makes me wish I had chosen UM for my marine chapter, not Exorcists! I hope you do add more to those guys, cause they're really fun to paint and have plenty more in store i'm sure.
Paradigm wrote:Very nice, that's a striking little strike force! Are you planning on adding any of the other kits, or just sticking to the starter stuff and the Dread?
I am adding the normal captain for sure, and a little 5 man scout squad with bolters. So far none of the other models have really spoken to me, besides the aggressors so I may do them and do the dakka version as my armies lack crowd control.
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Those look phenomenal! The metallic blue makes me wish I had chosen UM for my marine chapter, not Exorcists! I hope you do add more to those guys, cause they're really fun to paint and have plenty more in store i'm sure.
Thanks man! I am doing a captain and a scout squad and maybe aggressors, but as of right now I am finishing what I have then the land raiders for the custodes. After that I plan on doing some deathwatch and scions to round my army out fluff wise.
Well I got some more work in on the captain, he should be finished tomorrow. All that is left is to do some edge highlighting on the gold, finishing the eyes and sealing in the transfers. After that I will work on the 5 hellblasters and the last LT and then it is onto the land raiders which I am very much looking forward to.
Well as promised I finished the captain, intercessors and lieutenant. I also got a lot of work in on the hellblasters and they should be done before the week is out, after that I plan on working on the last lieutenant and Inquisitor Greyfax and that should finish up most of my ultramarines (bar a standard primaris captain and 5 scouts).
It is kinda hard to see, but I tried to do some more heat weathering on the plasma gun tips this go around
Master Azalle wrote:Still blown away by your metallic blues. Love the red glow on your hellblasters.
The metallic reds on the helms look fantastic as well.
Thanks man! I really like the red as well, I would be lying if I didn't think about doing a blood angels metallic red army next
Azazelx wrote:Outstanding work there. I'm almost definitely going to go metallics on many of my Primaris after seeing how well your guys have turned out to a man!
Glad I inspired you! What do you think you will do chapter wise?
Bit of a general update, I was finally able to build and prime my ultramarine primaris captain, prime my deathwatch frag cannon dude and prime and get the base coat down on my custodes terminators. But of course I ran out of wash 2/3rds of the way through on them.
Thanks man! I will done with them soon, bar a new captain and maybe that new superheavy that FW is coming out with
Well I am about done with the DI set, I just have to seal in the transfers on the hellblasters, paint the rims of the bases and do some general clean up. For the LT I need to also seal in the transfers, finish the base and the power sword but beyond that I am done.
Thanks man! I actually finished them today, well besides a 5 man scout squad and a primaris captain that is
As I said I have finished the ulltramarines today and did a small family shot of them. I also got some work in on Greyfax which is turning out nice and I am really liking her model. I plan on working on the land raiders soon once I get an airbrush up here and I can fix my overspray mistakes.
Great work on those Primaris Ultras, the candy scheme is especially impressive. I really like the freshly shaved effect on the head of the Hellblaster Sgt, nice attention to detail there.
Good start on Greyfax as well, such a lovely and understated sculpt, looks fun to paint.

Thanks! I like doing that shaven effect because it adds character to the models. But you are right on greyfax she is a really fun model to paint!
As promised here are some better pictures of the LT and Hellblasters, and I worked on the brightness to kill that grey overtone that seems to happen a lot in my pictures and it seems to have worked. All that is left is the regular primaris captain, 5 scouts, two venerable land raiders (custodes) and this army is done!
Well I ran into some luck, a friend up here at college let me borrow his airbrush so I was able to try and fix the clear red overspray on my land raiders (still looks a bit off but it blends together better) and get the clear blue down on my ultramarines captain. Also my bases for my terminators showed up and I was able to build and prime my 5 man scout squad.
I finished one of my papers early yesterday so I decided to reward myself and get some work in on the custodes terminators. I got the rest of the base colors down and washed them so in reality they are about halfway done. I also did some work on a DKoK tank commissar I am re painting for a friend (I sold it to him a while back, but I want to repaint it cause I feel like I can do a better job now).
Sweet work on the blues Ustrello. They really are trhe best take I've seen on Ultras in a looooooooooooooong time. Loving the Krieg Commisar....such a wicked mini and youre doing a sweet job on him
Januine wrote: Sweet work on the blues Ustrello. They really are trhe best take I've seen on Ultras in a looooooooooooooong time. Loving the Krieg Commisar....such a wicked mini and youre doing a sweet job on him
Thanks jan! Always nice to see you back on Dakka
I was super tired yesterday, so I did not get much work in on the terminators. Besides finishing the face on the bare headed guy and starting the red layers on the plumes. But I did get the tank commissar pretty much finished!
Thanks man! One day I may go back to the kriegers but not for a while
Well I finally got off my butt and took pictures of greyfax. Tried my hand at messing around with the light levels so I wouldn't get that grey filter effect that I normally do so hopefully it looks better!
Very ominous. She's a great model, and I'd say you've done her justice! If there was one thing I had to comment on, it would be the hat. For a dark model, the hat seems to stand out a lot, almost like it is too bright compared to the rest of the model.

Well done Ustrello!
Thanks! Honestly I was painting the hat red as an homage to the Monty Python inquisitors because it is one of my favorite scenes and it'll make me laugh every time she kills a model
Chugging along, getting more work in on the terminators and getting the primaris captain close to being done. I have a bit of a time crunch coming up so I won't be working on the land raiders to get them ready for AoP so hopefully the terminators will fill in cool factor wise.
Well I got my ruined temple for my AoP board and she is a beauty. Sadly I don't have the time to carve the floor to match the bases of the custodes, so a similar color scheme will have to do. A river will be flowing down the middle and I got the glue wall down in place right now drying and I will be going in with the blues to create a sense of depth later, probably tomorrow and after that getting the frozen water down. I also plan on putting some snow drifts in various places and corners of the temple and making up some stained glass to go in the broken windows and around the inside and outside of the temple. I got 5 days left to get it ready, all the while writing a 25 page paper that is due next wednesday
Got some more work in on my temple, mainly getting the water way and water effects down along with icicles on some of the parts of the temple. I just need to put some snowbanks in the corners of the temple and some other various areas and start on the stained glass and primary waterfall.
For S&Gs I decided to set up the custodes in the temple to just see what they would look like and it does look nice so far.
If your board has space, though, I'd suggest putting a Custodian or two outside the temple, just so that if someone wants a good look at an individual painjob they can get one without having to look over/round the temple walls. If not, then I'd say make sure you have one clearly visible along the front edge for the same reason.

WarbossDakka wrote:Class looking board. Can't wait for this waterfall, I think it's gonna do a great job of bringing it all together. Keep it coming!
Sadly the water fall was not dry in time so it was scrapped =(
Master Azalle wrote:The board looks fantastic! And cracking job on the custodes. You've mastered the metallics brother
Thank you! I am glad everyone is a fan of them, I was worried the first time I did them
Well another year and another AoP on the books. Sadly I did not win any categories, but I almost won best painted (lost by one) and monsters/machines (lost by 2). I got some pictures of my board and I will post them later for sure if anyone is interested.
Also I am about done with the primaris captain model, and honestly I don't know how to feel about the model. Most of the design is pretty great, but the aquila on the chest and the eagle on the shoulder pad are just bad, not enough differentiation between the individual wing parts lead to it looking like one solid piece instead of the normal layered look. Also I got around to starting the blue metallic on the scouts armor and it is looking good so far!
boundless08 wrote:Well done on the board. I'm looking forward to seeing what the scouts look like completed with the partial armour covering and your metallic style.
For the captain, maybe some more white to break up the shoulder pad and chest piece? A bright contrast might make him pop
Thanks! And I took your advice, albeit in a different color direction. I stuck with the red, but I went with the khorne to wazdakka to squig progression and it looks a lot better that way rather than just plain gold.
Januine wrote:yer kicking arse these days Ustrello - really great work
Thanks jan! I am really liking your Dr. Doom and Chaplain model!
Another successful day of painting in the books. I finished the primaris captain, and even just about finished the scouts. All that is left on them is to do the base and get the ultramarine chapter symbol onto their shoulder pad. Sadly the transfer sheets that are with the scout boxes don't really fit their shoulder pads so I ordered a BaC transfer sheet because I remember they had some small ones.
After these guys are done, I have one more 5 man scout squad to go and then honestly I don't have any more ultramarine stuff. I know as a forgeworld christmas gift to myself I will be getting a relic contemptor dread with twin heavy bolter and chain fist but that won't be for about a month or so.
Finally got the scouts all based up, but I am still waiting on the transfers to truly finish them. Since I am starting to run out of 40k models to paint (I got quite a lot of 30k but it is dead in the water for me until they switch it to 8th) I got some work in on the crimson fist frag cannon veteran. I still got the rest of his squad all worked up in my mind, I am just waiting on the funds to buy the models. Also I just wanted to show the size difference between the primaris captain and a scout and there is a huge difference.
Azazelx wrote: Cool stuff again here mate. Greyfax looks Great and I really like how those Custodes are coming along.
Thanks! I need to field greyfax since she is painted and everyone knows painted models perform better
Well I got around to finally buying and making my kill team plus watch captain.
So far I have
Silver skulls watch sgt with combi plasma and xenophase blade
Crimson fist with frag cannon
Flesh tearer with shotgun
Mysterious blackshield with twin lightning claws (waiting on one more from ebay)
Sons of Medusa with frag cannon
The watch captain will have a power sword and a master crafted bolter and of course is an ultramarine , I think I will give him the metallic blue though for the shoulder pad to keep it consistent
Also can we talk about how the deathwatch overkill marines are the normal space marine size and not scaled up to match the deathwatch?
Great looking deathwatch squad, can't wait to see them painted.
And that's quite a difference in size. I don't know the lore for deathwatch but are they supposed to be bigger or is this just general GW size creep at work? They look close to primaris in size
boundless08 wrote: Great looking deathwatch squad, can't wait to see them painted.

Thanks man, hopefully they will be done before the school semester starts. The size difference is size creep, they are still a bit smaller than primaris though. I could honestly see them re sizing the regular marines to this size so the primaris regular marine comparison isn't so stark.
Well it has been a while hasn't it? My semester went well, I finished my senior thesis and am now in the process of applying to grad schools for my Master's. But I was finally able to sit down and take some pictures of my custodes terminators and ultramarine scouts. With winter break upon us I will try and get some more painting done, though I haven't been feeling it for the past few days since the semester ended. I did promise to paint a buddie's DKoK grenadier squad so hopefully that will kick start the painting bug.
So with my ultramarines pretty much done at the present moment, and waiting for the custodes codex to come out I have been struggling to try and paint anything at the moment. So I thought I would pick up a small commission for a friend and paint some of his grenadiers for him. He wants them in that classic blue-grey scheme and I will be following the warhammer tv guide for that. Though I will be adding some of my own twists to it, with dark silver metal bits and black-grey pants etc.
WarbossDakka wrote: That's some really nice highlighting on the Scout's armour. The Custodes look ace as well, I didn't even know they had Terminators!
They can be cool little derpy models sometimes . As for the terminators they have them in 30k rules and they are mentioned in 40k books so I am hoping they get access to them sometime
So it has been a while hasn't it? School has kept me pretty busy and I have been applying to graduate school and thankfully I have gotten into at least one school at this point .
With GW finally releasing a custodes codex and new models I have made a list (23 models) and want to get it painted and finished before summer. As of right now I need to build and paint Trajann, 3 bikers, 1 shield captain biker, 3 terminators, 1 shield captain terminator, 2 vexilla bearers, and 4 guardian spear dudes. I built Trajann, the 4 guardian spears, and 3 terminators already and am just waiting on more funds to purchase the last bits.
As for the schemes, all the custodes will still be gold with white faceplates but, I will be doing a few shadowkeepers here and there to break up the gold, and for the terminators I will be doing the gilded fist shield host which is the purple accents for the terminators.
I gave Trajann a head swap to make him look a bit better
Looking good my friend! Keen to see you slap some paint on in there. Custodes are real fun and i'm keen to get further into mine as well.
Also, for what its worth I actually happen to think the wardens are the nicest miniatures. Not that they look bad in any respect, but there's an awkward range of movement in the default custodes box, the termies strike me as being a bit static when they shouldn't be, kind of like the primaris aggressor kit. The wardens are static but dont pretend as if they're not. Their stance lives up to their defensive tabletop role and also i'm a sucker for the asymmetry of their tabards
Regardless, the whole range is sick, and the bikers are fantastic models too. I'm eager to see what you produce over the coming days and its good to see you back.

Thanks man! I am hoping to get some primer down this week as we will be having two 40 degree days. But we still have a foot and a half of snow on the ground so it may be tough to do so
I haven't played with the new custodes yet so I don't know how powerful they are but I have been hearing a lot of good things about them especially the bikes
angelofvengeance wrote: Ooooh. Those Aquilon termies look loads better than they do on the website. Nice!
They have finally grown on me and I am really starting to like them!
Well my last undergradaute semester has been kinda busy so there has been a distinct lack of painting going on. But, I have my custodes list all finished and I am in process of buying the models. We had a warm day finally so I was able to get some priming in. Plus, I did a bit more building.
First up are the terminators who will be in the Aquilan shield scheme. I have a metallic purple all ready to go that is a lot like my metallic red in consistency. They will have purple robes and plumes as well, I am going for a dark burgandy red to start with and then working my way up the GW purple paint progression.
My last 4 man guardian squad will be all shadowkeepers as I really like the black and gold scheme and it will help to explain why the shield captains in my list are shadowkeepers themselves.
Last up is the shield captain that I built recently. I will be giving him the eagle eye relic every once and a while, so to denote that I found the eagle bit from the deathwatch overkill box and put it to good use. I know in the text it states it is a better helmet, but I just like the idea of a cyber eagle flying around helping out the shield captain. He will also be painted up in the shadowkeeper scheme, but I am thinking of painting him with brownish skin as a tribute to Kitten from the TTS series on youtube.
Master Azalle wrote: Love the TTS vids. And excellent builds. Can't wait to see them finished!
Thanks man! And yes dear brother alfabusa is a saint among content creators, I can't wait to see what Khan will be like
Well I got some more painting in on the terminators. I got the base colors and washes down and even a few of the layers, up next will be highlighting the crap out of them and finishing the axes. I even got to try out the Badger metallic purple paint and well...it looks a bit blue so maybe I did something wrong? Either way I am liking how they are turning out
I only had about 40 minutes to work on the terminators last night, but I was able to clean up the shoulder pads, finish the cloaks for the most part, work on the bare heads, and just about finish the helmet dude (giving him a white stripe to match the white face plates of the rest of the guardians). Hopefully I will have these guys done before friday so I can work on the shield captain.
Well spring break was not full of painting as I had hoped it would be. Rather it was spent helping my parents clean the house and visiting a university for graduate school (of which I have accepted that universities offer and am now going there). But, I was able to build the two vexillas for my custodes army, they will be the -1 to hit one and the +1 attack one which is why I chose the two different banners so I can tell the difference. They will also be in the emissary scheme so they will have white robes to set them apart from everyone else. After this I just have to build the squad of 3 bikers and the shield captain, so the army is almost all built. Also the base company I use Dragon Forge is expanding the base range for the bases I use and they will include bases for the custodes bikers, so I won't have to worry about mismatching bases now.
Would you mind sharing your reciepe / process for painting your golds and silvers? Because they look fantastic. Also, what company makes those metallics? They are freaking awesome and would love to get my hands on some.
Good luck with your last semester! I'm in the middle of law school so my painting time has dwindled greatly too :(

For sure!
The gold is: spray retributor armor, all over wash of reikland, layer auric armor gold, do all of the edge highlights with liberator and do extreme highlights with stormhost silver
Silver: is leadbelcher base, nuln oil, then layer iron breaker, then extreme highlight storm host. If I am going for quick I skip the last two steps and dry brush necron compound.
For the metallic red and purple that is Angron red clear from forgeworld and the purple is purple ghost tint from badger
The rest of the metallic paints gold and silver are just the gw paints (I tend to be brand loyola which can be a bad thing )
Good luck to you for law school! One of my friends is getting her jd and taking the bar this june
Hoo boy its been a while hasn't it? Well with it being my last semester and visiting graduate schools my time has been pretty taken up, but I finally have had a moment to paint so I decided to put the other terminators off to the side for a minute and get to work on the terminator shield captain. I decided to best way to distinguish special units from my own "regular" ones is to make them a different shield host, and for that the shadowkeepers will be lending an unusual amount of support in the way of shield captains.
I decided to give this shield captain an eagle bit from the overkill box to represent the eagle eye relic he will be getting on the tabletop. I also decided to give him brownish skin in honor of Kitten from the "If the Emperor had a text to speech device" and of course his name will be on the bottom of the base .
I am mostly done with him, just the final highlights on the gold and black armor left, the finishing up the base and working on the power axe.
So I finished up the first shield captain in the shadow keeper scheme and for a while something was bothering me about the eagle. Well it turns out because I forgot to paint the beak and the little metal bits on the model, after doing that I am much happier with it. I tried to copy a golden eagle feather pattern because well the custodes are gold and a golden eagle . Up next I am going to do some work on the first vexilla banner bearer in the emissary scheme with the white robes because I feel that it first the idea of their role well. I will get around to working on the terminators again soon, but probably not for another two weeks or so until my semester is over and I graduate.
In the mean time I am considering starting a Deepkin army sometime soon after I finish up the custodes so I will be trying to figure out schemes for them as well.
The shield captain is great man! I gotta say you got it on point with the beak and extra bits, the latest photo makes the eagle pop so much more! You should totally get deepkin, you'd definitely do them justice. Hell, even I want to get some deepkin and I don't even collect AoS they are amazing models

Thanks man! I am leaning more and more towards getting them, mainly because it has been years since I have a fantasy/AoS army and those were the VC so I feel like it is time to finally get on the AoS train after my failed attempt at IronJawz
