Thanks para! Though it might be me but in one place the white looks a bit chunky on the jump pack (even though I thinned out my paints =/) Otherwise the gym wiped me out today so I didn't get anything done besides kit bashing my dreg for mordheim and write up a small backstory for him. This was my first time kit bashing so I didn't go super crazy.

Once known as Sigi the bold, he has fallen on hard times in the city of mordheim. The empire refused to pay his wages after a long service, so he took to begging in the streets to try and survive. Sigi grew resentful of the empire that mistreated him after years of service and heroics in her army. When the comet struck the city Sigi had been lucky enough to survive the blast, but soon even with his meagre funds that he gained from begging he found himself poorer than ever. So he found his old shield and axe and decided to become a sell sword for the warbands that were starting to populate the city. Sigi detested non humans and refused to even think about selling his services to them, and at the same time he detested the empire that abandoned him. That was until a pale man with a peculiar accent promised him gold glory and eternal life if he served them.

Thanks! I am taking a small break from my death korp at the moment to finish up my shadow captain. But I play on finishing the rest of the death riders and probably my grenadier squad before the middle of august.

Thanks! The strigoi ghoul king is a great model, it just sucks that gw doesnt make a foot one.

Yeah, they were my first army two three years ago. I got captivated by their fluff and now that their chapter tactics are actually pretty decent I decided to restart them. Oh and also because shadow captain korvydae allows for assault marines to be taken as troops was another big reason.

So I got some more paint down on Korvydae over the weekend. I got a new recipe for white that seems to work well, and I used GW's new gold base for the eagles and I gotta say it is an awesome color. Very smooth and goes on with just one coat in most cases. Also forgive me for the pictures I got a new phone over the weekend and I am still learning the camera, the old one decided to stop a wooden skid corner with the screen breaking the screen all the way down to the internals .

Nice! Could it be that for the first time in about 6 years, GW have made a gold that actually works?

Yeah I was really surprised when I first brushed it on. I was expecting the normal 2-3 coats, but since the stormcast eternals are all gold they must of figured they needed a good gold color haha.

Lord Corellia wrote:That gold is looking great! You say you got that down in one coat? I'm going to have to get some of that!

Yeah it is great, a bit more yellow than gehennas though.

So I am almost done with shadow captain korvydae, just waiting on the realistic water to dry and see if I need a second coat. Then painting the rim of the base, maybe loren green? What do you all think? And finally fixing any small errors that I made.

Secondly what should I paint next? I got two LSS plus five scouts I can paint up for my raven guard or I can finish the last five death riders.

Personally I think black base rims always look best. The mini is looking great, though, as is the base itself!

I vote Scouts next.

That is a fair point. For me personally the model never looks complete without a painted rim on the base. Thanks for the kind words though! I will probably be making the scouts and other stuff tomorrow.

So I finished korvydae, and I know I say this a lot but this by far my favorite model to paint thus far. I also highly recommend secret weapons miniatures bases as they are absolutely amazing. I also got some work in on the scouts today and hopefully will be finishing the building tomorrow.

So Korvydae took second place in my local GWs painting competition, but I was gone the entire weekend paintballing so I did not get much paint on models only getting the terrain piece and the scout sgt. half way done.

It was a great model, one of the new AoS stormcast eternals. Thanks for the compliment on the scout!

But the barricade is from mantics ruined sci fi terrain line.

Yeah it is a great model!

Otherwise i have finished my first terrain piece, an overrun quarantine barricade that was keeping in xenos and or plague zombies and left to rot in the streets.

I have also almost finished up the scout sgt. minus dullcote on his shoulder pads and a rim color for the base. Also I have started up the LSS base.

Someone actually painting raven guard with their pale skin? . I love the barricade, how did you do the posters?

P.s. from a while back, how can watching football be nothing special? We get hardly any in NZ.

The posters do add so much character! I believe they are simply images sized down in Word/Photoshop and printed out, although I could be wrong.

It is a pet peeve of mine that the gw team always paints raven guard with normal skin tones . But the barricade posters are just sized down images I downloaded from a fellow dakkanaught. What did I say about football? I totally forgot haha

So I have just returned from a long weekend at Gencon, and I have to say this year was a total blast! I tried many new games, including a flames of war stalingrad battle, and got a decent amount of loot from the vendor hall. Also I had a bit of time today to try out my new dullcote lacquer that came in on thursday. I made the mistake of putting in on right out of the bottle instead of thinning it down with mineral spirits so I kinda messed up the scouts campaign badge shoulder pad, but nothing I couldn't fix up. I also pretty much finished the LSS base, minus the rim color and a second application of realistic water.

Now down to the nitty gritty, the scout. I will say I hate the scuplt on scouts, they look like hunchbacked freaks and their faces are terrible. Game wise they are awesome, so I am kinda stuck with them lol.

Also the base is coming along, minus some pva residue that got spread out by the realistic water I thought I gave it enough time to dry but evidently not. From what I can see up close it may not turn out too bad, hopefully the flyer above it will hit it.

Secondly I have a few pictures from the FoW Stalingrad game. It was a 3v3, with the Russians taking the horde approach vs the elite german army. I took command of the penal battalion and the 9 t34 platoon.

Spoiler:

My deployment zone

Glorious Russian side

Overview lengthwise of the table

I also got some sweet loot, including two free tank sprues from the stalingrad game, the DKoK FW t-shirt on day 2 surprisingly, two mk6 raven guard helmet sets for my raven guard army. and a box of centurions for 27 dollars off GW price! Sadly though FW lost my shipment so I was not able to get my RG venerable dreadnought, but I got free shipping since I ordered from the con and I hadn't paid for it yet so I couldn't be annoyed by it.

Spoiler:

Sounds epic! Were you inspired to pick up any of the other games you tried?

Scout looks good, I agree about the sculpt though. You can fix them up a bit by kitbashing with the LSS scouts for some more varied poses, but I guess that depends on whether you want to model your speeders with passengers or not.

Any plans for the tanks? I see a Sherman and I think the other is some kind of Stug. Personally, I'd throw together a little diorama with them.

I may try my hand at FoW or another game system called savage worlds. But I may not with FoW because idk if I can afford a fourth gaming system lol. As for the tanks, it is a stug and a sherman, the diorama would be an interesting idea, I may have to draw up some plans.

It is actually a kit from secretweapons, but the water itself is from woodland scenics I believe. Sorry to hear that though about no wargaming conventions in New Zealand though, maybe they have some in Australia?

What I've done for many of my Scouts is to use the Wolf Scout heads from the Space Wolf box and file or snip off the "severe" hair cuts. Waaay more character in those heads, I'd say and they're not blocky like the standard kit's noggin.

That is an interesting idea! I will look into that for my next batch of scouts!

So I got some painting done today, finished the bases for the scouts bar any grass, or moss and of course the water. The arms will be painted separately so I can get at the details in the chest. I also started the crashed landspeeder tempest today. I rolled a d20 for a legion and it landed, of course, on the smurfs! So I will have a nice blue speeder wreak on my table lol

So I finally made the plunge and bought some AoS stormcast eternals. I've been wanting to buy some for a while now but I could never justify it, until my local GW has AoS as its monthly painting competition theme. So I decided on the paladin decimators because how are giant axes not cool as hell? Should I start another blog for Aos? Or just keep this one?

Oh I also got some more paint down on the Landspeeder tempest, expect some finished scouts tomorrow also.

Yeah the stormcasts have been getting a lot cooler!

Also, I finished up my first stormcast eternal. I am going for a ethereal type scheme, with a similar background to the legion of the damned. I went off of the gw stockholm scheme, but I don't think I got it quite right. I am still pretty happy with it though all around, including my first attempt at a meadow base. Tell me what you all think! Especially if it sucks and you have a better way of doing it

That is a good idea, though upon looking at the model and the process for the scheme I messed it up. Not super bad, but enough for me to be annoyed by it. So I will be fixing the other just primed models so hopefully this guy will just be an outlier

So I spent the day correcting my AoS stormcast eternals and even got the scheme down perfect I think. But I am pretty tired to take pictures so I will post those tomorrow. But I also built my three centurions today and loaded them out with grav cannons and amps, of course. I plan on running them with a lvl 2 libby in a drop pod.

So as I stated I believe I got the ethereal look down for the other four decimators, as you can see from the statue of liberty esque one on the far right, they look totally different and much better. It is a fast scheme that fits my love for the ethereal in the warhammer world. As I stated above, I think, I am going for a legion of the damned vibe with them. They pop in where needed, kill and get out. Right now they are fighting in the realm of life purging the daemons that have invaded it.

I also finished building the hull for my LSS, I plan on painting the scout separate from the LSS so I can get maximum details in.

I haven't even put it together beyond dry fitting it and I am getting the urge to throw everything aside and get it all painted up. Instead I plan on using that feeling as a motivation to at least finish my scouts and their LSS before I even prime this bad boy. Seriously look at its banner! So cool /fanboying over

So I almost got the rest of the scouts done. I am waiting to apply the second layer of realistic water, paint the rims of the bases and matte down the shoulder pads. I am deciding to give a few models per squad the raid on kastorel-novem campaign badge to signify a more veteran status, I will most likely do this via a d10 etc system per squad. I am also surprised because the scouts sculpts grew on me a bit, especially the face on the black haired scout. I also got some work done on the scout's LSS, specifically the metal undercarriage and the white wing tips.

I also decided to change the name of the plog to something more generic and specify on the second part of it because I am painting a lot more than the DKoK nowadays.

Hmm maybe a khorne red, red wash, mephiston edge highlights? As for the metal I did go a bit heavy on the necron compound lol

War Kitten wrote:Just went through the blog and i must say, your scouts look a lot better than mine

Thanks man! Always glad to have new people enjoying my stuff.

Well today wasn't the most productive day. I was only able to get the leather, and edge highlights done on the LSS and finish off the bases of the scouts. Also I treated myself and went and finished the dreadnought head, I decided to go with pure white as I figured dreadnoughts are the epitome of veterans. But I realize how much I hate painting white on flat surfaces so I think I will keep his arms black and maybe the shin pads white. Though in the next week or two you will start to see the beginnings of my armies on parade board as I have ordered all of the necessary parts that I needed. Sadly my local train store didn't have the woodland scenics stuff I needed so I had to order it all online. But it has all been ordered and I will be trying to go full force trying to finish it before the end of october.

Its been a busy last month for me, school has started and I am taking a larger than normal credit load. This has cut into my hobby, but not too fear raven guard are fairly simple to paint! Yesterday the last bit of my Armies on Parade terrain/bits I needed showed up. I am going for a wetlands theme with the raven guard trying (and failing) to stop a nurgle sorcerer from raising plague zombies. I have also finished the body of the LSS and the scouts themselves, currently I am working on getting the board together and painting the assault marines + the scouts that go inside the LSS. As always constructive criticism is welcome!

Getting the assault marines and terrain ready for priming

Thanks para! I bought the board and the border to put around it last night. So I will be sketching out the layout and probably hot gluing down the terrain later today/tonight

A small progress update! I got the trees and terrain + zombies and other goodies glued down to the board. The theme as I said is the nurgle sorcerer, painted up in Lords of Decay scheme, raising plague zombies to destroy the planet. It also gave the chance to use some zombie bits that I had laying around. Specifically the noose zombies to be hung from the trees, I am thinking of naming it "Traitors Ruin" after the fact that it is taking place in an abandoned execution field hence all of the hung people and zombies rising out of the mire. I know it is pretty bland in the beginning, but I am hoping that when I get the sand down on the base and it all primed it will look better.

So I actually got some paint down on the Nurgle sorcerer tonight, I am going with a Lords of Decay type scheme with nurgles rot coming out of his armor joints. I also decided to give him a nice leather cape, because sometimes even nurgle marines want to look cool. He should be done fairly soon, and I decided to downgrade the number of raven guard I am putting on the board to actually help tell the story instead of doing a hybrid diorama/army showcase. So I will be going with only 10 assault marines, 10 bolter scouts, and 2 LSS. Which will make my job a whole lot easier and take a lot of stress off of my hobby time.

Anyways here is the man himself, I have yet to think up a name for him or if I even will. But I feel like he should since he will be part of a diorama, any suggestions? I usually take names from myth and legend that fits the background of the chapter or regiment that I am painting up.

My completed nurgle sorcerer for my armies on parade board. Normally I go into a project knowing exactly what paints I am going to use and have the scheme all laid out. With this dude not so much, I had a general idea of what I wanted to do but beyond that? Not much. I went with a lords of decay type armor scheme with lots of oxidized brass, purples for nurgle and of course nurgles rot coming out of the armor joints and seeping out of the eye of the staff. This definitely not my best miniature but I am happy with it. Now I am onto finishing the rest of the board, and the Raven Guard that go with it.

Thanks para, those were actually the two I was most happy about. If I could do it again I would actually do some research on nurgle schemes before diving in head first.

So as some of you may or may not know my first army I ever collected/painted was a space marine Raven Guard army. As was the case with everyone my first army was painted terribly, so I decided to give it another go with the new space marine codex actually making the raven guard somewhat decent. I plan on painting all skin in the greyish pale tones of the raven guard with blackish hair, I also am painting the casings on the weapons in the same white stripe design as shown in IA 8. So without further ado here is the first WIP of the assault squad.

Well I did not finish the assault marines by the end of the weekend, but I am pretty close at this point. All that is left is the edge highlighting, doing some quick work on the jump packs, transfers, and finally the base work. I also got some more work in the AOP board, putting some cork down to represent some higher points in the marsh and got it all based with sand. For some reason it seems the glue was thicker in some points leading to a bit of a higher area, but not enough to get covered by the water when it is put down. I believe this will help give a sense of depth, so as Bob Ross said there are no mistakes, only happy accidents.

I think it is the nasty snarl he has on his face and not the pretentious look the other un helmeted dude has . But the straps are supposed to be the finest corinthian leather, they were spared no expense. But it looks more like leather in better pictures.

I got some more work in today, I got the edge highlighting done (bar some clean ups) and I have gotten the transfers done on two of the models. I gotta say they are a pain to work with, but look great in the end!

This brother survived the failed Raid on Kastorel-Novem, and has the campaign badge to prove his deeds.

Also RIP one can of primer, and I still need to use part of another to get some trees I missed and sand that has brown showing through

Yeah it does look goldish in the pictures, I know they are bad I will get them into the light box next time haha

Lord Corellia wrote:Are those the standard transfers? I can never get mine to look any good, what's your secret?

They are the, now OOP, forgeworld raven guard transfer sheet from IA 8. It was replaced by the nicer newer 30k sheet, sadly though it will lose a lot of the 40k squad markings etc. But on the flip side I got enough transfers on one sheet for almost an entire battle company!

Oh I also got the Sgt. basically put together so I had to snap a quick picture!

They are the dead trees and I think oak trees from woodlan scenics. They run around 10 dollars per bag

Thanks Jan! I should be getting some paint down on the board this weekend, I got to decide if the models will sit on top of the realistic water or if I will make holes for them to sit in.

Alright, so I got the assault squad done and I will get better pictures up sometime next week of them. Mainly because I entered them into a painting competition, tied for first place and got second place in a run off vote losing by two votes. It was a great competition but I did lead a bit to my own losing by giving my second place vote, worth one point, to the eventual winner . I don't mind outcomes like that because it will push me to do better in the next competition, especially since I've only been losing by a decreasing amount of votes each month. So here is to next month where I hopefully will take first place!

Also on some side news, I won the red scorpions librarian model in an ebay auction for fairly cheap. So you all will get to see a cool raven guard librarian in the coming weeks!

Oh yeah nothing to get angry at, but there was a 40 dollar pool for the winner so those who want to put in ten dollars to the pool and the winner gets it all. It would of been the perfect excuse to buy a trygon for the dakka october painting competition . But there were 9 entries so I am pretty ecstatic about getting 2nd place

I took the day off from painting on sunday and just primed a few things and got the black base coat down on the newest assault squad. But yesterday I started to feel a bit of pressure from the armies on parade due date so I kicked myself into high gear and got the bodies of the second assault squad almost finished baring edge highlighting and details. I plan on having these guys done before friday so I can finish the LSS crew then get to work on the the remaining models.

Which are one bolter scout squad, one LSS, possibly a librarian I am still deciding if he will fit the theme of the diorama and of course the board itself

As the title states, I am greenstuffing a jet of flame that will be coming out of a librarians hand using a tutorial I found on this site. So I was wondering if I did a good enough job? It was my first attempt at it, but I feel that it isnt too bad, maybe go back and try again with a larger amount of green stuff around the paperclip

Also today was a lazy day with hobbying, I only got the shoulder transfers down and matted. Though that takes a bit of time as these transfers are terrible to fit properly over a curved surface like a shoulder pad.

The flames look fine, only criticism I could have is that the 'strands' could do with a bit more direction to them, probably angling back towards the Librarian (that's a guess, I've never seen someone shoot a fireball from their hand in real life before....), but once painted I think it'll look great!

My technique for sculpting flame is to roll out a stretch of GS, then use my knife in a rapid up-and-down motion- this cuts in to create the depth, then the GS sticks slightly and thus pulls out with the knife to add height. No idea if that helps or not.

Oh I should of explained better. His palm will be open(ish) facing upwards and the jet of flame will be shooting straight up but not at a full force kinda like he is charging it up. But maybe I should make it a bit wavy and not straight up and down? But that technique you described is exactly what I did and it worked!

Alright a bit disappointed since my ebay packages have still not arrived but hopefully today! But I have almost gotten the assault squad done, barring a second coating of realistic water and painting the rim on the base. For some of the moss on the stumps I used a bit too much pva glue when mixing so they look a bit shiney. But it is a small area so hopefully it wont detract from the model itself, and I can always play it off as it is wet

They look fantastic!

For photograping black minis, it might be an idea to look into blue or grey backdrops for the pics, the white makes the image very high-contrast and the depth of the black is getting a bit lost.

Yeah those past few pictures have been a quickly thrown together backdrop that in hindsight wasnt a good idea. I do have a grey backdrop for my light box and I got to use it some tonight!

So I finished the rest of the assault squad meaning I made and painted a entire 10 man squad in around two weeks! By far my fastest time ever, I have done a lot of new techniques with these guys (most noticeably transfers) and I got to say I am so happy with them. Next up is possibly some more scouts or my librarian when it gets here, and of course the AoP board itself. So as usual comments and criticism are always welcome!

Speaking of models after much hemming and hawing I finally finished my LSS. After this I will be possibly making another scout squad for the board, and of course after the football game is over I will start putting paint on the AoP board, finally .

It has a get in the car loser we are going to kill some heretics feel to it . But one of my buddies actually magnatized the torsos to the legs on the LSS and then took regular scout legs to a base so when they disembarked he could just pop them off of the LS and onto their walking bases.

Alright this has been one of my most productive weekends in a while. I got that assault squad done, finished the LSS. And now I have painted up the entire base for the wetlands AoP board! Plus painted up everyone's favorite mischievous lads nurglings! Where they will hide on the little islands making faces at the approaching spaces marines. I also got a scout squad all built up, minus some mould lining, and should be primed up tomorrow. Anyways tell me what you all think about the board so far!

So the first of my ebay deals has finally rolled in and it is the forgeworld sevrin loth of the red scorpions! I have always liked the model just because of how different it was from the usual librarians that GW has put out and when I saw it on ebay I knew I had to at least try and win it. Lo and behold I did end up winning it and for cheaper than you can buy the librarian clampack at GW. I made a few modifications to him, just slicing off the hand and flipping it palm up so that I could attach some warp fire coming out of his palm. At the moment I do not know if I am happy with the way the flames turned out, so if anyone has a good recipe for green flames let me know! And if you need a better picture of the flames let me know as I took this picture around midnight when I was too tired to get my lightbox out

Do you plan to run him as 'not-Loth' rules-wise, or just as a generic Librarian?

He was just by himself so just loth, and while I would love to have loth, I don't believe I can take him as a raven guard. So for now he will be a lvl 2 librarian who rides shotgun in a drop pod with my devastator centurions.

Alright, small update time. I got the chaos ruins almost finished on the board, I went with a more whiteish grey marble theme for them and then washed it down with a blackish green wash to show how long it had been sitting in the swamp for. I also got the nurglings glued down to the little islands in the back facing the marines as if they are taunting them that they are too late to stop the plague zombie spell. I will be surrounding them with grasses and what not as to hide them a bit to explain why they escaped the wrath of the marines (who undoubtedly had bigger targets in mind). Also I got a devastator squad all built up and they are just waiting on a good mould lining. Not really surprising in any sense GW doesn't include normal bolters and backpacks in the devastator squads so you are SOL if you want to have normal bolter marines in your squad. Luckily I have a decent sized bits box so I was able to grab the right parts to make them. The new scuplts for the marines are pretty sweet, especially the new stuff for the sgt, I can't wait to get paint on these guys!

Hey all hope everyone had a good weekend! I didnt get much done myself on sunday due to getting called in for a double shift on sunday but yesterday I got a lot done. I about finished the armies on parade boards arcane ruins bar the crow on top and the heads hanging from the back of it, plus I got the trees base coated and washed and now they are just waiting on a dry brush, so the board is about 60 percent done with only 11 days to go . I also got a LSS built and tried my first attempt at a OSL on my librarian to help give some realism to the flame in the palm of his hand. I decided to go a little light as it was my first attempt and I did not want to go overboard, so tell me what you all think!

Looking great, the OSL is of the nice and subtle variety that I appreciate much more than the 'point airbrush. Press Button' variety!

If you really want to sell the green as flames, then I think the best thing to do would be adding some very, very white green to the 'deepest' parts of the flame. Take a look at these flame tests for examples:
Spoiler:

Or one with a little more yellow:

Fun fact: That's the first time my chemistry A-level has actually come in handy...

It's a tricky effect to pull off, as you essentially have to highlight 'inside out' as you want the innermost parts to be brightest, but it will work brilliantly when combined with the OSL.

Thanks para! The greenish white is a good idea and I will have to try it out later tonight. Now you have to find someway for the Pythagorean theorem to come in handy in real life and you will have made your teachers dreams come true .

But I didn't get a whole lot done yesterday, just finished up the axe (went with a red force blade) and put down his campaign transfer plus some stuff for the base. All that is left really is waiting on the shoulder pad and to put down the realistic water. So hopefully this guy will be done by friday so I can use him in all of his glory on saturday.

The sound of jump packs screamed overhead, epistolary Kyaneus did not look up knowing it was shadow captain Korvydae and assault squad Garrulus rushing forward to strike down the target that they have been hunting for so long. Kyaneus and strike force Korvydae had come to Chapus two months earlier when the Ravenspire picked up a desperate plea for help from the Governor saying greyish green space marines with ooze leaking out of their joints had invaded their planet. The Master of Shadows had sent the strike force to liberate the planet with due hast since it laid only a few systems over from Deliverance. Since then Kyaneus and the strike force had been fighting the runious powers and its followers in the swamps where they had made their home. But today was to be different, today the Raven Guard had tracked down the leader of the Lords of Decay a foul sorcerer named Sobek. And as Korvydae streaked forward to smite the foe who had tried to destroy this world. but Kyaneus felt a pulse rip through the warp and it was at that moment he realized that they had failed and what ever Sobek was trying to conjure he was successful. And as the ground around him began to stir and limbs starting popping out from the decaying ground he summoned warp fire, knowing the battle ahead would be long and strenuous.

I usually do not write stories so forgive me if it was poorly written, but I felt my entry needed a bit of background (also it will help lay the foundation for my AoP board)

Thanks! Though looking back I might of chosen maybe a purple instead of a green for a flame, but live and learn!

Slow day today, I got the vegetation down on the board and am in the process of mossing everything up. I also got the zombies all done, I am keeping them a simple rotting flesh greenish grey. All that is left really is to do the birds and signs, the rope for the hanging dudes and get sawing on the boarder that will hold in the water. I am contemplating staining the wood so it isnt its natural colo, what do you all think? It may add some extra steps but it could look nice if I chose the right stain color.

Sorry for the possibly bad pictures, I had to move the board inside since it is getting around the low 50s/high 40s at night here now and I didnt want to leave it outside in the garage.

Alright with my biggest hobby project to date coming to a close I thought I would do a state of my hobby address. To lay out what I hope to do and build, especially since winter is coming soon to the chicagoland area. At the moment I have two devastator squads built and primed, one tactical squad primed, one drop pod primed and base coated, one scout squad, one dreadnought, one LSS, and one centurion squad all built and primed

What is left? Well one razorback (waiting on forgeworld rhino doors for that), ten assault marines (waiting on bases), one avenger for my DKoK (waiting on base for that), and drum roll please one fire raptor! (waiting on model and base). I also plan on buying ten of the mor deythan when they come out and convert them to sternguard and will probably get another drop pod for them also. But with november fast approaching I believe I have about 3 weeks of priming weather left before it becomes to cold to rattle can spray it. So my general plan is to get all of the above primed to hold me out for the winter, I plan on maybe adding the rest of the death riders to that list but at the moment my DKoK are on the back burner for my Raven Guard.

Also I got some more work done on my AoP board, I cut the border that will keep the water in and I have also stained it! I plan on gluing it in tonight and then sealing the inside edges with clear caulk to make it water tight. So I am almost there, but the realistic water will still take 1 and a half to two days to complete so time is running out.

Lastly I got a game in this past saturday with my raven guard for an escalation league at my local gw. My teammate was a good friend of mine who took a horde guardsman list, and my opponents were a tau player and an eldar player (who just so happened to win the youngbloods tournament at adepticon). It was a great game, turn one my grav centurions destroyed the riptide but alas they all died at the bottom of turn one to the eldar. Though it tied them up for an entire turn allowing us to win on points. In hindsight I should of targeted the eldar biker squad with farseer which only had 8 bikes in it, it would of gotten rid of his most potent psyker and gotten us the slay the warlord points. But the MVP was tied between the centurions and my thunderhammer captain plus assault squad which wiped shadowsun and all of her body guards in one turn of combat. Anyways here are some pictures from the game.

Alright so armies on parade has come and gone very quickly this year, sadly I did not do as well as I had hoped. I placed 4th with each place above me getting one more vote than the previous. What did I learn? I needed more models on my board as there was a dead zone in the middle, or I could of placed more plague zombies than the 7 I had (maybe around 20 or so). But I will take this as a learning experience and try to do better next time. Oh and I got a supply drop from forgeworld, the model masterclass bundle, raven guard rhino doors for my razorback, a fire raptor and the rule book for it. This, barring the new raven guard transfer sheets and mor deythan, will be my last order before the winter starts as I don't want to buy models that I will not have a chance to prime with the weather being so cold.

Lovely work. The water is done thing to be proud of.

I do agree that more is probably better, it is *Armies* on parade after all.
I saw some at WHW that didn't have an inch to spare, and they were pretty crazy, but somehow worked.

Great stuff! I bet if you were to have a quikc play around in photoshop/equivalent and add some fog effects/maybe a few lens flashes and such, you could do some awesome shots likethe ones in the FW books of those models. The RG advancing through the swapm, not quite sure what or who they're looking for, very atmospheric. I actually quite like the 'dead' space in that regard, it gives a sense of the unknown.

Actually, the whole thing reminds me a lot of a scene in the second Horus Heresy novel where a Sons of Horus detachment are about to have their first encounter with Nurglite demons in a very similar sort of setting.

That looks like a great AOP entry, the three higher placed entries must have been awesome. One thing I have noticed about AOP boards is a lot of people seem to like added height on the boards, it just seems to catch the eye. Given that yours was swamp themed that was not really an element that you could add.

Hope to see some progress on the rest of the Marines soon.

Yeah they were all raise, especially the eldar one which had a giant webway gate and the ad mech which was packed with models. I plan on pumping out some more marines soon especially since it will get too cold to prime soon and that will end (or slow) any priming of new models.

Weathering powders are a lot of fun and give some great effiects. Do put some paper down first though as they tend to get everywhere!!!!! They do tend to tone down quite a lot when you seal them on with spray varnish. Have fun with them

Is there a good way to use them? Or should I follow the fw guides in the masterclass book/online? Also do you gloss weather powder gloss again? or a matte?

The masterclass books are cracking. I flip though them all the time. I seal mine on with spray varnish. Whatever 'purity seal' is. Satin I think. It's the only stuff I can get over here. Mixing them with white spirits/alchohol (?) is another way of using them. I think thats when you want a kinda of a muddy paste. I havent done that yet. Whichever way you use them, you'll need to seal them on, as they are basically just chalk powders which will rub off and get overywhere unless dealed. The masterclass books are a good start and there are laods of good tuts on YouTube as well. I would reccommend you have a seperate brush just for the powders though as they can wreck brushes, well, its more the way they go on that damages the brush.

Well it is finally getting cold here and I hopefully have another week or two of good priming weather. Nothing much to update, just getting my vanguard squad ready for the new raven guard formation (Shadowstrike kill team). That thing is beyond nasty, so I will be running ten man squads if I can with 4 th/ss to slab wall in the front and 6 LC marines in the back to bring the pain.

Thanks man! I have an idea already for my board for next year lol.

Anyways I got into a discussion with my local gw manager. I personally think the new ravenguard captain model sucks, and it totally does, and he says it is amazing and he could make it look good. I told him no way and he bet me lunch on it, so I got pigeon holed into painting a slaughterpriest since my honor is at stake. I am going for a more grey skin tone on this guy much like my raven guard, but instead of a straight brown wash I used a purple wash mixed with a flesh wash to give it a more harrowed look. Also this will give me a chance to use some weathering powders on his legs so that is going to be exciting! Also I got my trygon primed for this months dakka painting competition, along with my fire raptor base and rhino for the raven guard. As per usual C and C is welcome.

I kind of like some of the detail on the new RG character, but I've not a clue what's going on with his pose. Thraxas did a conversion that swapped out the arms and it looks way better, but the standard model is a case of good design but posed by someone who doesn't really understand how limbs work.

I feel like he would be a great DA , IF , BT model but not a raven guard model. Too ornate and the helm just ugly, but rules wise the ravens helm is sick

Not a whole lot done in the past few days, I had to write a 7 page paper about the Taiping rebellion which was super interesting but took up a large chunk of my time along with being super sick. But I did get some of the axe done and some of the horns on his shoulders. Also I am deciding on what weathering powder to use on his legs grey ash or dark sand. What do you all think?

Secondly, the new HH box came out and with the raven guard bundle I am thinking of getting it to pump up my raven guard army but at the moment I am undecided.

The metallics on that axe look great! I hear you on interesting/necessary stuff eating into painting time, I have half a squad of soon-to-be Salamanders glaring at me from the shelf every time I go back to my current essay on Napoleon.

Looks like the powder on the left is more suitable. How easy is it to mix those, looks like the base itself is somewhere between the two colours. I'd definitely say get the new HH stuff, whatever you don't use for the Ravens you can add to your Dusk Raiders.

Thanks para, I actually split the HH box with a buddy and I ended up taking one tactical squad, the terminators and praetor and what I really wanted the chaplain (which is going to go under the knife to make a sweet jump pack chaplain). I have decided to go with the dark sand this go around, but I haven't actually painted anything since my latest update .

What have I been doing instead? Well building my fire raptor which has been the most infuriating kit I have ever built and has a million gaps to green stuff, but at least I got it done. For those with experience in green stuffing gaps what is the best way to go about it? With out too many noticeable mistakes once it has dried? Also I got my last forgeworld order in and something sneaky has worked its way into my hobby area.

Your best bet is to get some milliput rather than GS if you can, as that's easier to sand once dry. In either case, though, you'll want to use as little as possible and get it as smooth as possible, then once it's completely dry, use a file or some fine sandpaper to get it smoother. Do that, and it should be just about unnoticeable after primer.

Are those Recon Marines or Mor Dethyn?

Alright I will get some milliput! I assume color doesnt matter? Also any suggestions for making it smooth pre hardening?

And those are the mor deythan! Though I will be using them as sternguard with combi weapons and I believe I found a nifty way to give camo cloak scouts the sniper rifles so nothing goes to waste!

Basically just try and smooth it out with a flat surface. I find rolling an old paintbrush handle over it back and forth works well, just be sure to wet it first as otherwise the milliput will stick.

I ended up getting the chaplain done, which I converted to a jump pack chaplain, and five terminators. I still have five sniper scouts, ten cc scouts, two tactical squads, two sternguard squads, and a vanguard veteran squad to build. My local GW also had a secret santa party, and I decided to join in on the fun. And well I gotta say my secret santa was extremely generous. A drop pod, two bike boxes, two LSS s, a manufactorum, Ironclad dread, and a vindicator! Suffice to say I got a lot of work ahead of me.

Dead simple, the arm is a separate piece from the elbow downward so you could swap it for something completely different if you wanted to.

I love the chaplain myself and he will be one of the first ones getting paint on him . But the swap is as easy as para said it is!

I know I got so much to do. 30 tactical marines 10 sternguard, 10 vanguards, 15 scouts, one LSS , a rhino, a razorback, a dread, 10 devastators...and that is without the secret santa stuff I got yesterday

Dead simple, the arm is a separate piece from the elbow downward so you could swap it for something completely different if you wanted to.

I think I literally am almost done collecting my army, apart from some more assault, vanguard and potentially bikes lol

Alright so I actually started painting and am getting back into the groove. I started out easy and decided to finish up my BaC converted chaplain, I finished most of it up minus matting down the transfers, some minor clean up if I find anything, putting some moss on the tree stump, and laying down the last bit of realistic water. I also finally got to use the RG legion transfer sheet instead of the normal IA8 one, and I gotta say they are really nice, lots of little transfers that will make a mini look good.

Alright I finished up this guy up just before I leave on my trip. So may I present another survivor of the failed raid on Kastorel-Novem chaplain Eitath! He was a lot of fun to paint and I really liked the way his cape came out, and will be using this technique on my mor deythan counts as sternguard. I also am working on a HH rhino for one of my tactical squads and will be delving into the meat of my primed models/building my remaining ones in the next month I have before school starts again.

Thanks guys! I was worried that the jump pack would seem a bit off on him but as soon as I dry fitted it I realized it was going to fit perfectly.

Alright I got some more work done on my HH era rhino last night and I got some more goodies in the mail. I don't plan on making a large scion army maybe 800 points or so if I want to ally in or use it as a house army at my place.

Yeah I got lucky with my secret santa, turns out it was one of my friends who was also a gw employee so he went all out for me!

So I got some more work done on my HH rhino, did most of the metals part of the weathering and laid down the transfers (man do I love the new legion transfers). I should be done by the end of the weekend and will move onto something else, haven't quite figured it out yet.

Coming along very nicely! I think it needs a little more weathering or some mud to break up the large panels on the side, though.

Thanks para, I plan on rusting up the metal steps, putting soot on the exhaust, mud/water/water grass on the tracks and lower parts of the panels like its been driving through the swamp. I may also scratch up the side to simulate its paint getting stripped by driving past trees etc.

Alright I got some weathering in on the rhino today. I decided to muddy up the lower parts of the hull and caked the mud into the housing like it is starting to choke up the track housing. I am debating whether or not to do the same to the wheels of the tracks since many people wont see it but I'll know its there or now. What do you guys think? I also got four bikers made tonight and based up, I ended up using parts from that horrid captain Solaq model for the biker sgt and will be using a commander sprue to make a captain/chapter master on a bike.

Thanks para! Your advice on the weathering did help it out a lot.

So I finally finished the rhino, decided to muddy it up a bit more and highlight all the rivets. It isn't my best work but it is one of the better vehicles I have painted (Don't let the fact that I have only painted three before this confound that ) I plan on building more of my bikers, my necrons and get painting on my vanguard squad for the unofficial dakka painting competition. But does anyone have any other suggestions for things I could work on for the rhino? Anything at all to help my vehicle painting skills.

Looking good!

However, the lack of weathering on the back ramp is quite jarring; that thing will be slamming down into the same mud as the treads are going through, so I'd say the top edge of the ramp could do with some significant mud and maybe some chipping on the leading edge as well. I also think some lighter weathering on the top edges on the sides might be in order, just to break up the black there.

But take that with a pinch of salt, I like all my 40k minis weathered to hell and back.

Nope just changed the name since I stopped working on my DKoK for right now and am branching into other armies that are not imperium. But thanks for the kind words man! I wish I had more to show but I am a slow painter.

Alright I took the advice I was given on here and out with my buddies and I decided to weather the back door a bit, add some mud, and a chapter transfer to help liven it up and make it seem like less dead space.

In other news I pre ordered the skitarii box set from gw and I decided I will be making them into dark mechanicus to help break up my pure imperial armies (even though I will be using them with the normal skitarii/cult rules)

They are such a great deal! I am getting a few bits to chaosfy the walkers and bases a bit, but I am still deciding what I want.

In other news I came across some terrain I wanted to spruce up my table, and my favorite is the ruined chapel and will be the centerpiece for my table.

Alright so I spent most of the day yesterday finishing up my space marine bikes, as from before I used Captain Solaq to make the sgt. But this time around I used a few kits to make the chapter master smashfecker, mainly the bike kit (obviously), chief librarian sevrin loth's shoulder pad, the space marine commander kit for the torso, a cataphratchii terminator thunder hammer, and a storm shield to represent the shield eternal. Now all that is left is to trim up any flash I missed (seriously there is a lot on these older kits) and start to gap fill.

So I got some paint down on my vanguard vets, base coated them black, got the base of the base done (still got the trees etc left), painted the base down on the faces, the aquilas and the chapter insignia. But I cannot stop myself from messing around with the rhino even more. I decided to add a lot more mud to the back track housing to simulate that it is going through an actual wetland, and I added fake grass to make it seem like it has been rolling over some vegetation and of course more water effects to make the mud look wet.

So with the new GW starter boxes coming out I decided to jump onto the action and get the skitarii box. But I have different plans for it that normal skitarii/cult mechanicus, for a while now I have had an idea of a dark mechanicus army rattling around in my head because I lack a lot of "evil" armies so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. So I was able to build the dominus and onager today, file down any mechanicus symbols and start adding chaos bits I have lying the house. I am still waiting on a few bits and a green stuff roller to make tentacles and cables so the onager/dominus are a very early WIP build.

I also got lucky that a company were making dark mechanicus transfers so I will not have to try my terrible free hand on anything

The transfers in question from fallout hobbies.

Spoiler:

Stegadon
Drybrush vallejo metallic
Skink blue
Drybrush more metallic
Coelia greenshade.

I may add SWM Algae green after I test it.

Yeah I really want to try and start painting it soon, but I may not be able to for a bit because it won't be above freezing here, let alone priming weather, for a bit. Also I feel like I got lucky with that chapel also, but right after I won mine I saw someone selling a NIB chapel. I can only imagine what that went for

Alright, I got some more work in on my vanguard vets. I still gotta do the edge highlights, decals, bases, weapons etc but with one more good day of painting they should be done. After that I plan on finishing out the squad (mainly TH/SS guys) and then moving onto some of my dark mechanicus stuff and a tactical squad. For the tactical squad I have a blinged out raven guard one (upgraded kits from FW) or the BaC one, what do you guys think I should do first?

Alright so its been a busy day, I didn't get a whole lot of extra work in on the vanguard vets. In other news I caught a break with the weather and I had enough primer left over to get the tech priest dominus primed. I am going for a teal type color on him so the first step is steogdon scale green on the cloak (which is all I had time for today). Tomorrow I should be line highlighting the other three vets, finishing up the jump packs, laying down the transfers and of course working on the tech priest some more as he is due the 23rd for a competition.

But yeah I feel like I finally got the raven guard skin tone down (or at least the way I want to do it), and I should be done with the tech priest hopefully soon, but the rest of the army may have to wait for more suitable priming weather.

Alright so I got some more work in today, mostly finished up the last three VGV and am waiting on their realistic water to dry right now. All that is left on them is to matte down any decals, clean up any mistakes and then paint them rims on the bases. I also got the metallic base/shading down on the tech priest dominus along with washing his robe. I plan on making the three vials/weird contraptions on the hunch of his back weathered bronze to help break up the silver metal color.

I also have attempted to fix my pictures problem with being too dark by setting up my light box facing my workstation and its lamps to help get that last little bit of light to the models. Though this is something I have been noticing, but when I upload my pictures to the dakka gallery from imgur they have a somewhat of a light grey filter it almost seems, but when I upload them directly to facebook or any other site they do not have that filter effect. Does anyone else have that problem or is this more of a me being bad at taking pictures type thing?

Alright so I finally finished up the vanguard squad, they were pretty fun but I did make a few mistakes with them. On the sgt I used too large of a veteran marking so it came out a bit wrinkled (I found better ones to use on the other 4 so that mistake wasn't repeated) and the white recipe I used on the mk 6 helmets does not work so I am going to try the GW one next time. Otherwise I really like the squad, especially the un helmeted guys and I am really liking my new set up for taking pictures. I also got a lot more work in on the tech priest, his robes for the most part are done and I used januine's not gold gold recipe for the metal plate on the back (I need to still lay down the sycorax though) and I really like the way it is turning out.

Alright I almost finished the tech priest! All I got left to do is layer down the sycorax bronze (picking that up tomorrow) and weather up the base/model with a new red weathering powder I ordered up. Sadly the model couldn't get too many of the transfers on it besides the three I placed on it, so I decided to free hand a partial chaos star on the servo skull. What do you all think could I find another place on his robes to free hand something chaosy or place down another transfer from this sheet http://www.fallouthobbies.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/016-Evil-Machine-Cultists-White-01-663x1024.jpg

I will build him soonish, but he will have to wait to be primed until it is warm enough to do so. I am not going to risk priming him on a 40 degree day just in case something terrible happens

Alright I am now calling the Dark mechanicus magos complete. Sadly my red weathering powder did not come in on time (since I was entering this guy in a competition tomorrow) so instead I went with an orange rust from FW. It was a fun model to paint and I am looking forward to making my dark mechanicus war convocation.

Cracking Archmagos! Very unique colour scheme and nicely executed.

Dammit, I'm just going to have to buy one of those Get Started Mechanicus sets, aren't it? The more cool versions of these I see, the more I want one!

So I got super sick this weekend (Thanks to my boss who doesn't know how to cover her mouth or not come to work sick ) . So I did not get a whole lot done, besides finishing the converting on the dunecrawler and getting some paint down on the other half of the vanguard vets. I decided to take the skitarii gunner given as an option in the box and have the tentacle wrapped around with his body and wires/intestines coming out of his body like he was ripped in half. Also in other news my dark mechanicus "magos" won my local GW painting competition yesterday so that was pretty awesome.

The ones in my area (chicagoland and western suburbs) do every month. I think it was a manager meeting thing to help promote the sale of GW models and what not and to show off the cool stuff you can do with them. That is also one of the reasons that my local GW only allows for GW models or mostly gw kits with some forgeworld stuff on it, the most being some of the HH rhino kits and that barely squeaked by.

Okay those are insane, and I think I might try and make one of those into an onager.

Speaking on onagers I got some work done on the base for it (waiting on the body so I can still enter it into the dakka competition). I painted up the mechanicus and knight in colors of one of my friends armies just to poke a little fun at him

Thanks man!

So another night and another update. I got the sotek green down on the main body, along with some more wash in the recesses to give it some depth, for the legs I put down the stegodon and sotek greens for the leg and "foot" armor and used warplock bronze and brass scorpion for the metal ringing them. I also did a tiny bit more work on the dead skitarii warrior, started work on the accessories (skull chains and the skull pike) along with finishing up the tentacles. I can probably finish this guy before the weekend and then I will probably finish up my last five vanguard vets and get to work on my many tactical marines

Alright a bit late on the update since I fell asleep (Been doing a 5 day a week 645 am workout regiment). So I got the dunecrawler pretty much finished, all that is left is to matte down the decals, paint the base red (helps show some depth for the martian ironearth), lay down the martian ironearth, and do the weathering powders! This has been a super fun model thus far, but after it I will be switching gears back to my beloved raven guard and start finishing off whatever I have (it was one of my vows to get the entire army done before the year is out).

Alright I finished the Onager a few days ago (I was trying to take better pictures of it) and I feel that I finally got them down. This was a super fun model to convert to the service of the dark gods and it gave me some ideas of others along the way.

Also as stated in the title I am finally taking the plunge into 30k. I decided to because I own Corax, all of the special raven guard units and the BaC boxset that it is time to start. Though I want to keep these guys separate from 40k army so I want to base them differently. I was thinking the ruined temple series from secret weapon miniatures and painting them up in a marble color. What do you all think? I will include a picture of the bases below.

That Dunecrawler looks awesome, I appreciate it even more now having finally seen one in the flesh last week (before then I'd only seen pics online), it's a much nicer design than I'd initially thought.

Marble bases would be awesome. If you're looking for tutorials, Jan and Archer's blogs had some good ones for white marble, and if you are going more for the brown/grey marble I did on Lorgar's base then I can put together something on that as well if you want. (it's dead easy!)

Thanks para! The model is pretty awesome especially with all of the other bits that I left off to I could fit the rest of my heretic stuff

As for the marble I am debating on what color I should use, as pure white might be a bit too stark, so I could go with a brown marble or even a green one. What do you think?

Green marble would look awesome, but might be the hardest to pull off. Grey/brown are a lot easier, and would look more neutral than white or green.

Post by: Paradigm

The marble I did on Lorgar was simple:

- Basecoat black
-Mid-strength drybrushes, keeping the strokes in the same direction to get the 'vein' effect, of ivory, pale grey, dark brown and a couple of mixes of those.
- Wash Agrax all over, but avoid pooling (treat it more like a glaze than a wash)
- Add a few spot glazes of green and red to add some colour depth (optional)
- Light drybrush of ivory concentrating on the edges and raised areas, same again with pale grey.

Lorgar's base took about 15 mins start to finish (including drying time), which for the result is faster than the other methods I was considering. The only issue is you will get some mess around the edges of the base, but that's easily cleared up just by painting the rims black (or brown if you prefer).

There's also no reason this technique won't work for other types of marble just by changing up the colours. Keeping to whites and greys over black and using a black wash gets you a nice black marble, inverting that (white base, black and brown drybrush, white drybrush) gives a warm, white colour.

Hope that's of some help!

I used the 'tip' (being dry brushing, it wasn't really a tip so much as 'collection of bristles') of an old fine brush, splayed out slightly. Keeps the area nice and narrow, and controlled, or as controlled as dry-brushing can get.

Cool thanks! Also I was looking at pigments to use for the guys since the temple is obviously ruined and shot up. Is brown marble brown all the way through? or is it white underneath? Because if it is white I got some pigments already but if it is brown I was thinking about this color

Sorry for lacking on the updates everyone, I have been fairly busy and I haven't had the painting bug lately. Well I am happy to say that I entered my dunecrawler into my local GW's monthly painting competition (which happened to coincide with its 2nd birthday party) and I won! By a landslide actually, it was a good competition and we had a lot of entries. I ended up picking open category again and I think I may be converting up an ironstrider for the dark gods.

Also I finally got around to buying my BaC box set today and I got another 10 man sprue on its way to give me an even 40 legionnaire marines along with my special units and the shadow lord himself. I also put in a forgeworld order to shore up any missing units and characters to get my list up to a nice 2-2.5k list size. Also in the next few days I will be making a special announcement that I am excited to share!

Thanks man! Well they will all be in mk 6 armor so fluff wise they didn't get that until they were back at deliverance so that would be post drop site. But I plan on running Maun (who was on the first wave in on the drop site but was "never found") so it's kinda muddled . Sorry for the late response on this but here you go, I tried to use that program para suggested in the thread and it worked but I don't know if my camera on my phone is up to snuff for it

As for the skin tone, I do a base of Administratum grey, agrax wash heavy, then re layer with administratum and then do a mix of white scar and administratum (I eye ball it to be honest) and highlight the bridge of the nose, eyebrows and cheek bones. I hope that helped!

I did mine as a Vigilator, actually, pretty simply conversion. Swap the Crozius forearm for basic bolter forearm, then veeery carefully carved out the pointing hand of a Terminator Chainfist (if you have a Tactical/Grey Knight squad pointing hand bit in your bits box, it'll be a lot easier!), cut and turned the forearm of the extended arm, added the hand, added various paraphernalia around the belt. Actually, I've made that sound way more complicated than it actually was!

I felt that he came out nice also, the second one will be an actual 30k model. So I am going to make sure he has a pair of lightning claws and one of those cool dark fury jump packs (since I want the chaplain to be in the squad) so may as well make him look like the squad a bit. But what do you think you will kit your guy out with?

Alright so on my way out the door today I noticed two packages on my porch, turns out my bases, weathering pigment, pigment fixer and final BaC squad showed up today. Sadly I had work and school so I did not get much done besides washing the bases. So I got enough for 40 tactical legionaries, 10 more deythan, 10 dark furies, 2 apothecaries, 1 fire raptor, 2 contemptors, 1 special character, 5 terminators and a few left over 32mms for any other models I may come up with. The idea is basically to copy what para did with his brown marble and then since they are ruined temple bases to put some weathering powder around the bottom of their legs.

No problem man! I hope I was of some help, the RG are easy to do once you figure them out it just takes some practice.

Also here is a picture of the weathering powder I picked up from SWM, in person I don't know if it is quite the right color I am looking for since I am going with brown marble. I think it would have to be a bit of light brown and grey mixed together to get it right. But what do you all think? You can see that it is grey mixed with a bit of green and the tiniest hint of yellow

Alright everything is chugging along at a good pace, I got the ten dark furies washed tonight and should have them built and on their bases by friday along with the remaining mor deythan. Luckily for me the weather seems to be breaking towards the warmer side and it looks like I will have two good priming days this coming friday and saturday to take advantage of.

I also started work on my dark mechanicus dragoon, not a whole lot of conversions here, just a new lance and a banner to fly off of the back. I took it from a scion box and filed down all of the markings and will take some emery cloth (400+ grit) and try to smooth it out so it isn't as rough. I am not seeing a whole lot of ways to use tentacles on this one so I am just leaving it to the three I have and instead will focus on the banner and free hand on this one to make it more chaos like.

Alright so after work last night I was able to pick up some 400 600 and 1500 grit sandpaper to work on the banner and it did the trick. The banner is super smooth now and I believe will be much easier to paint on, and I decided to put some more chaos stuff on the walker. Specifically a gargoyle dirge caster head on the back where there was a blank spot and some chaos back spikes from the chaos lord terminator kit on the flat housings next to the rider just to make it look a bit more sinister. I also got to work on the vanguard squad, I am deciding to just give them all of the upgrades I can on the models since I will be running the war convocation, so why not? The models don't have a whole lot of room for any chaos bits so they will more depend on transfers or free hand on their cloaks (which I am looking forward too), but I was able to fit a chaos icon on the backpack of the sgt so that will at least set him apart a bit from the rest of the squad.

@para thanks! I should be getting paint on him soon, but it will a lot slower than the dunecrawler. Two papers are going to be due in about four weeks so it will be slow going on him, but I will try and get some time on him every day.

As the title states I am finally in the building phase of my legion! Last night I got ten dark furies built and based along with ten mor deythan rebased/partially built. The dark furies are stupid good imo and will only get better with the new red book when they will all get mastercrafted rending pairs of lightning claws for free instead of buying them with no points change. Sadly the mor deythan did increase in points in the new book but they are still pretty damn good.

When messing around with battlescribe I ended up making a chaplain model just to see how many points he would come out to be to add to my dark fury squad so they can get that sweet sweet zealot and hatred rules. Well it turns out he can also take a pair of ravens talons pretty cheap too. So I ended up kitbashing one together from the dark fury set and the BaC chaplain, I am still waiting on my dark fury jump pack ebay purchase so he will stay like this until the end of the month but I am liking him so far. He does have a very Shakespeare look to him so I am thinking of adding a skull or maybe one of the heresy helmets to his hands, what do you all think?

Lastly I started on a test base for my army using paradigm's brown marble recipe...and of course I didn't get it quite right. But I really do like it and I think I will keep it as it feels pretty unique and it still offers the color contrast I was looking for. Though I am not sold on the base rim color, what do you all think?

To be honest, I'm not seeing any issue with that base. It looks like marble, where it differs from time is that it's a lot smoother (mine is more rough/natural marble) but that's no bad thing given the temple theme. I say black rims, but then I've always preferred them no matter what's on the base itself.

Furies look epic, I may well have to get some to add to my own force at some point. As far as the Chaplain goes, I absolutely love the pose (and yes, he needs a helmet in the outstretched hand, MkIV or Indomitus Terminator, I say, Alpha Legion or Night Lords colours...) , but the claws seem to be a little too far along the arm; if you look at most PF-like weapons, the glove part begins almost adjacent to the elbow. So if it's not too late, I'd definitely look at trimming the arm down a little further and adding the claws back on. Sorry to be so nitpicky, it's just an awesome concept and model thrown of slightly by the jarringly long arms.

Yeah it took me about 20 minutes for me to start to like it. But it was mainly started by realizing the Shakespeare connection

Yeah that is what I was trying to convey with the gloss was that it was polished marble, though in the broken bits I may not gloss and instead put down weathering powder to shown that it was broken. Or at least put gloss on the broken bits and weathering powder.

The dark furies are amazing models and you really should get a squad or two for your shattered legions (or hell even mor deythan because fatal strike is amazing with combi flamers) As for the chaplain I was able to saw his army down a bit and re attach it a bit further down, does it look a little more natural? I feel like it is a lot more, you were right the first picture really made me think his arm was way too long. I also added a helmet and skull to see what people think looks cooler so let me know what you all think!

Yep, that looks way more natural now. I think it looks great with the helmet, where that wins over the skull is that it 'points' back to the head/torso that will be the focal point of the model, little things like that can make a huge difference to the overall composition.

Definitely add some powder to the broken bits, you'll get a really nice contrast with that!

That is a good point, now I gotta choose a good traitor legion to paint it was to give it some contrast!

I will be building my BaC contemptor today and I also got a forgeworld raven guard one on its way. So which base should the BaC dread get? Obviously the less cool of the two so I was thinking the one with the giant letter, but what do you all think?

Slow past two days, I was only able to prime the deythan and the furies along with some combi weapons and the contemptor. Sadly I cannot paint them yet as I am waiting on the off black forgeworld paint to use on these guys and my order will not be in for two weeks or so (kinda miffed because I forgot to check the free express shipping button on the website and FW did not get back to me until four days after the package had been shipped). But on slightly better news my new KR case came in today and man this thing is nice! The foam is super soft and and the cardboard cases plus the case itself make for sturdy protection.

Well after finishing up a paper for my history class I was able to get a lot of work in on the dragoon. Almost everything major is done on him barring small details, transfers, weathering etc. I am still not a huge fan of his helmet, what do you guys thing? Maybe switch him to the same color as the gargoyle head/shoulder/seat metal color? Its the same one jan used on his tech priest, also I am still wondering how to paint the servitor. Maybe in a grey scheme just to keep him neutral with the blue for his armor plates.

Anyways here is my first WIP shot of the beast, the flag came out surprisingly well for me filing it down so much with one side being super smooth (that is where I am going to put the transfer) and the rough side will get some free hand chaos stars and binary just to spice things up.

Looking good, live the blue! The helmet does look a little out of place, but that's just as easily solved by adding more of that colour somewhere else as repainting it. Perhaps on the Chaos trophy rack behind him?

Yeah that is an option, but what about going to normal leadbelcher iron breaker runefang route? Or do you think that will be too much silver metal on the model?

Thanks man! Everyone at the store really seems to like the army as well and want to see me field it, but that is going to be a while as I got other armies I want to work on more

I honestly believe that the RG have some of the best special units in 30k (both rulewise and sculptwise), I can't wait to field them and see how gross they are.

Agreed. The Raven Guard, especially with the two most recent releases, have some gorgeous sculpts. But I feel that way about the Ad Mech and Skitarii too, even the often maligned Kastelan Robots.

So Skitarii wise what else have you got/ plan to paint?

Right now got the rest of the vanguard squad from the get started kit and I am planning on getting a small war convocation. I was debating on getting a forgeworld chaos knight, but I think I will convert one up on my own as I got a lot of cool bits that would work. To be honest I need to sit down and write out a list to see what I actually need as I want it at the 1500 point range (if that is possible)

I was happy it came out the way it did, little do the dark gods know that it is actually a re purposed scion banner . But I have always been a fan of giant billowy banners so it fit

I ordered quite a bit of chaos bits in preparation for this army and I am glad people are liking them means it was a worth while investment. What do you think about going plain leadbelcher progression on the helmet? Too much you think since a lot of the model is that color?

So since I have been talking about doing a war convocation I finally decided to write up a list. Since I get all upgrades for free I decided to leave them out since I can just add them in at a later time, but I have no idea how this army plays so tell me what you all think!

Oathsworm- Paladin (just going for an all around knight here)

Cult mechanics
Hq- Dominus (duh)

Troops-
Kataphron destroyer squad
Kataphron destroyer squad

Skitarii battle maniple

Vanguard 10 man squad
Ranger 9 man squad
Dragoon
Sicarian infiltrators
Rust stalkers
Onager

The total comes out to 1499 points exactly, I feel like I have a lot of MEQ killing power in the squad and a decent amount of armor killing with the knight and onager.

So I got a whole lot more done on my dragoon. I was able to get the transfers down on one side of the flag, and finish up most of the lance (just waiting on the blue citadel edge paint to finish that up). I also switched the helmet to a standard metal color and I feel like it is a better fit. I still got to do the weathering, lay down other transfers, finish up the last parts of the servitors, and start the free hand.

Thanks warboss!

Alright so its been a few days and I've been kinda kicking around waiting to start on building the rest of my legion, though to be honest I probably could start at least gluing legs down to their bases. In the mean time I have finished building my praetor. After using my dark furies for the first time over the weekend I feel that a chaplain would be perfect for them, honestly they are a super strong unit and they almost punked Skarbrand in one turn (dealt 6 wounds and he was able to save 3 of them with a 5++ to go down to one wound).

Also after doing some reading, I decided I really want to try and run the blood crow himself Kaedes Nex. His rules are awesome and since he is BS 6 chain firing is amazing on him. So I decided to take a normal calth marine, cut down some hands to fit some new pistols I ordered from Kromlech. I know he isn't bald in the book but I plan on giving him stubble via the warhammer tv tutorial.

Lastly I got some more work done on my dragoon! Basically freehanded all of the chaos stars that needed to be done and put down the weathering powder on the legs and debris on the base. I even got to use the secret weapon miniatures pigment fix for the first time and I really like it. It flows really well and it doesn't leave much, if at all, of a shine so no need to matte it down. I expect this guy to be done tonight and then I will proceed to work on my last mini from the paint my mini thread and hopefully in that time my order will have arrived from forgeworld.

Alright so I was able to do a few things last night, set up another new lighting rig (which I think is much better than the last one) and finish up ButteryCommissar's Mordian Iron guard sgt from the paint my mini thread. After taking the pictures I realized that I forgot to finish up the plasma pistol which I finished this morning.

And now for the announcement, this July I will be going to Canada to play Ash Barker of Guerrilla miniature games for 30k. I may also do miniwargaming also but I do not think I will have enough time to do so. So that means I have a little more than 4 months to build and paint

Alvarex Maun
Kaedes Nex
jump pack chaplain
2 apothecaries
5 cataphratchii terminators
30 legion tactical marines
10 dark furies
10 mor deythan
1 rhino
1 fire raptor
1 laser rapier
2 contemptor dreads

I got a lot of work but I believe I will be able to get through it all in time.

I actually followed the GW advent calendar exactly to get that white. It is surprisingly effective, and yeah Ash's stuff is pretty good! I hope to match some of the armies I have seen on their before.

No problem BC I am glad you like it! I will be trying to post it out this monday or tuesday.

Well I finally finished the dragoon, though it was mainly waiting on an edge paint to come in from GW. I tried a the new set up again and I am really liking it, it seems to get that right amount of light in it with out actually being too overbearing. Though upon editing the photos I am slowly realizing that I probably need to actually invest in a real camera to take some better pictures. So tell me what you all think of it!

Looking good! New pic setup is working wonders and the model is fanbloodytastic!

As far as the pics go, again a definite improvement, all I'd suggest is rearranging where you have some of the images. If you're going to use that layout that only has one large panel and 5 smaller ones, you ideally want the large one to show most of the mini, then use the five around the edge to have your other angles and close-ups. So in this case, I'd put the middle right pic in the larger box, the flag in the middle right box, just so there's a big pic of the whole model.

Hope that doesn't sound negative, just suggesting a way to show of the amazing model a little better!

Well in modeling news I got started on the legion tactical marines while I wait on my forgeworld order to finally show up. Nothing too big just gluing down the 30 legs to their bases and mold lining them so I can then just start gluing the torsos and other bits when the order finally gets here. I am stuck though on what to do with the final 10 marines, I either can make them into 10 more tactical marines or I can make a support squad or a veteran squad. What do you all think?

Really, it depends on what you lack in the rest of the list. With your Tacs, Dark Furies and Mor Dethyan you've got anti-infantry pretty well covered. So Melta and either ML or even Las would add some nice AT punch to the list.
