Thanks! I got tired of doing black armies so I wanted to try something vibrant for once

So I got super sick this weekend (Thanks to my boss who doesn't know how to cover her mouth or not come to work sick ) . So I did not get a whole lot done, besides finishing the converting on the dunecrawler and getting some paint down on the other half of the vanguard vets. I decided to take the skitarii gunner given as an option in the box and have the tentacle wrapped around with his body and wires/intestines coming out of his body like he was ripped in half. Also in other news my dark mechanicus "magos" won my local GW painting competition yesterday so that was pretty awesome.

Such potential! You are using the tube maker right?

And that model is one of the best you've ever done. Absolutely deserved it.

Great work on the Magos, and congrats on the win at the comp.

The dunecrawler looks great, possessed machine spirits for the win.

Yeah it is the one from greenstuff world actually, and it was super easy to use (just gotta remember to wet down the GS and the roller a bit before you start).

Do a lot of the GW store and flgs run painting comps regularly?

The ones in my area (chicagoland and western suburbs) do every month. I think it was a manager meeting thing to help promote the sale of GW models and what not and to show off the cool stuff you can do with them. That is also one of the reasons that my local GW only allows for GW models or mostly gw kits with some forgeworld stuff on it, the most being some of the HH rhino kits and that barely squeaked by.

Okay those are insane, and I think I might try and make one of those into an onager.

Speaking on onagers I got some work done on the base for it (waiting on the body so I can still enter it into the dakka competition). I painted up the mechanicus and knight in colors of one of my friends armies just to poke a little fun at him

Alright so I got the metal + wash, then the base coat + wash down for the main body and tentacles and finally the base coat and wash down for the poor Ryza skitarii that got a bit too close.

Thanks man!

So another night and another update. I got the sotek green down on the main body, along with some more wash in the recesses to give it some depth, for the legs I put down the stegodon and sotek greens for the leg and "foot" armor and used warplock bronze and brass scorpion for the metal ringing them. I also did a tiny bit more work on the dead skitarii warrior, started work on the accessories (skull chains and the skull pike) along with finishing up the tentacles. I can probably finish this guy before the weekend and then I will probably finish up my last five vanguard vets and get to work on my many tactical marines

Thanks! I was worried that the main body would be too flat for the color to work but just doing some spot shading helped it out so much.

Alright a bit late on the update since I fell asleep (Been doing a 5 day a week 645 am workout regiment). So I got the dunecrawler pretty much finished, all that is left is to matte down the decals, paint the base red (helps show some depth for the martian ironearth), lay down the martian ironearth, and do the weathering powders! This has been a super fun model thus far, but after it I will be switching gears back to my beloved raven guard and start finishing off whatever I have (it was one of my vows to get the entire army done before the year is out).

Alright I finished the Onager a few days ago (I was trying to take better pictures of it) and I feel that I finally got them down. This was a super fun model to convert to the service of the dark gods and it gave me some ideas of others along the way.

Also as stated in the title I am finally taking the plunge into 30k. I decided to because I own Corax, all of the special raven guard units and the BaC boxset that it is time to start. Though I want to keep these guys separate from 40k army so I want to base them differently. I was thinking the ruined temple series from secret weapon miniatures and painting them up in a marble color. What do you all think? I will include a picture of the bases below.

That Dunecrawler looks awesome, I appreciate it even more now having finally seen one in the flesh last week (before then I'd only seen pics online), it's a much nicer design than I'd initially thought.

Marble bases would be awesome. If you're looking for tutorials, Jan and Archer's blogs had some good ones for white marble, and if you are going more for the brown/grey marble I did on Lorgar's base then I can put together something on that as well if you want. (it's dead easy!)

Thanks para! The model is pretty awesome especially with all of the other bits that I left off to I could fit the rest of my heretic stuff

As for the marble I am debating on what color I should use, as pure white might be a bit too stark, so I could go with a brown marble or even a green one. What do you think?

Green marble would look awesome, but might be the hardest to pull off. Grey/brown are a lot easier, and would look more neutral than white or green.

Yeah I am really liking hoe you did your brown marble. What wad your recipe for that?

Also I just realized that I based 7 of my mor deythan on blasted wetlands bases so now I gotta get them off of those in preperation for the ruined temple bases

The marble I did on Lorgar was simple:

- Basecoat black
-Mid-strength drybrushes, keeping the strokes in the same direction to get the 'vein' effect, of ivory, pale grey, dark brown and a couple of mixes of those.
- Wash Agrax all over, but avoid pooling (treat it more like a glaze than a wash)
- Add a few spot glazes of green and red to add some colour depth (optional)
- Light drybrush of ivory concentrating on the edges and raised areas, same again with pale grey.

Lorgar's base took about 15 mins start to finish (including drying time), which for the result is faster than the other methods I was considering. The only issue is you will get some mess around the edges of the base, but that's easily cleared up just by painting the rims black (or brown if you prefer).

There's also no reason this technique won't work for other types of marble just by changing up the colours. Keeping to whites and greys over black and using a black wash gets you a nice black marble, inverting that (white base, black and brown drybrush, white drybrush) gives a warm, white colour.

Hope that's of some help!

So for the dry brushing did you do it with the brush width ways or long ways to get the more narrow efrect?

Thanks btw that was a super helpful guide and I should be trying it out sometime soon

I used the 'tip' (being dry brushing, it wasn't really a tip so much as 'collection of bristles') of an old fine brush, splayed out slightly. Keeps the area nice and narrow, and controlled, or as controlled as dry-brushing can get.
