Spacewolverine wrote: That white is beautiful, not my cup of tea but they look great. Claws came out beautifully. Nice work as always Ustello!
I get that, it does feel like a lot of white, but I needed some somewhere and the wings felt like the best area. I got the recipe for the claws from MWG actually and their quick tips video.
Still chugging along, this time with the last 5 dark furies. Not a whole lot to explain or talk about with them, I hope to have them done by tomorrow and take pictures on friday. Then its time to green stuff the raptor and deepen the flight stand hole (currently it sits in around a 1/4th of an inch and the entire model will go to one side and threaten to fall) so I hope to deepen the hole to around 1/2 or even 2/3rds of an inch and increase stability since it is such a heavy and fragile model.
Almost finished the last 5, looks like the schedule is back on course . All I got to do is seal transfers and then weather and I am done, after that it is fixing the fire raptor.
Spacewolverine wrote: They are coming along extremely nice! You have done amazing models justice.
Thanks man. I actually finished this morning but I don't think they need a series of pictures since they are pretty much the same. Tomorrow I will probably do an entire army picture since it is mostly done bar the fire raptor corax 5 lascannon supports and 5 melta support dudes.
Speaking of fire raptor, I was able to dremel out the cross underneath the acrylic rod attachment so the model actually sits tight on the rod and if it does lean to one side or the other it wont fall. I then was able to green stuff any gaps that I needed to and will be sanding them tomorrow to prime and airbrush for sunday.
Oh yes sass! Cannot wait to see that bad boy painted. I never bought one because I heard a lot of people had miscast and it was a lot of cleaning up to do.
Spacewolverine wrote:Oh yes sass! Cannot wait to see that bad boy painted. I never bought one because I heard a lot of people had miscast and it was a lot of cleaning up to do.
It was terrible one of the worst kits I have every had the displeasure of putting together. Though don't let that stop you because it is a beautiful model
Thraxas Of Turai wrote:Nice progress Ustrello, here is to a productive saturday of sanding, priming and airbrushing.
So how difficult did you find the kit to put together? Also with all that resin is it quite a heavy beast?
Terrible kit to put together, I literally almost gave up at one point. And it is a very heavy model, thankfully I was able to drill the hole deeper so it actually sits very well on the rod (played a game with the raptor on saturday and it didn't even threaten to fall once.
Well I spent most of the day preparing the raptor for priming base coating and priming parts of the wings white. The first mistake of the day was snapping the canopy into place and not being able to get it out, the second bad thing was when going to base coat it with my airbrush my airbrush clogged up so I spent a good half an hour cleaning it and by the time I was airbrushing the raptor it was too late in the day to prime the wings white.
So my question to you all is, how do I paint the canopy in a realistic manner? I have seen tutorials but they seem geared towards the curved eldar canopies
Well got some work in on my fire raptor today, I was able to get the white down on the wings along with the metals. This model is honestly huge and a bit daunting, but thankfully tomorrow I will be washing and edge highlighting and the model has a lot of hard edges so the second part should go by quick. After that I got weathering detailing and the canopy on wednesday along with laying down transfers and I should hopefully done by thursday because I leave friday morning . If I have enough time I will try and get some of the drop pod done as I am bringing two lists and the chunky washing machine will be tagging along for one of the games
Certainly getting there Ustrello, the Fire Raptor is such a massive beast. The purple and white really help to break up the primary colour as well. Try not to get arm ache holding that whilst painting.
The white is gorgeous as always. The canopy I was going to post the other day but maybe a red tint or a toxic green wasteland type tint or a blue, I use sotek green then ink it to fill the gaps between the armor.
Januine wrote:vrey nice Ustrello. Gorgeous clean crispy work. It/s such a nice model (depsite the pain I've heard of in building) and you've really done it justice
Huge pain, but worth it once you are done fixing it up
evildrcheese wrote:Looking good so far. What colour will you do the canopy?
EDC
A dark blue I think, starting with abbadon black and incubi working my way up
Paradigm wrote:Looking good! Nice and imposing!
Thanks para! I haven't seen you post in a while how have you been?
Thraxas Of Turai wrote:Certainly getting there Ustrello, the Fire Raptor is such a massive beast. The purple and white really help to break up the primary colour as well. Try not to get arm ache holding that whilst painting.
I already dropped a loaded leadblecher brush onto the white once already (thankfully I was able to fix it) and yeah it is huge
Spacewolverine wrote:The white is gorgeous as always. The canopy I was going to post the other day but maybe a red tint or a toxic green wasteland type tint or a blue, I use sotek green then ink it to fill the gaps between the armor.
I decided to go with a dark blue actually and really sotek green ink in the gaps? I usually use agrax for my shades
Well another day and more progress, I have gotten the line highlighting, details, metal work and transfers all laid out. Tomorrow will be sealing and matteing down the transfers, weathering and painting the canopy, I expect to get a full army shot in and am super excited to do it
Those are some dead cool transfers! Love the skull on the rear hatch.
Yeah, I've not been posting much in the last week... something to do with Fallout 4, I think! Progress will be coming soon, though, I did paint up half an Inq28 Warband and there's a Helbrute on desk for this month's challenge...

Love me some FO4, have you played far harbor yet? Probably one of my favorites yet
Guildenstern wrote:That is beautifully done Ustrello, don't envy you the building but it's a beautiful model and your paint job has definitely done it justice!
Thanks guild! As I have said the model was a pain in the ass to build, but now that it is done I am loving how it came out.
Well as the title states I have finally finished the fire raptor and with that the army is complete (for canada that is, I still got big daddy corax, special weapon teams and a laser vindicator left to complete), I will try and get some work in on the dreadnought drop pod before I leave on friday, and after that I will be starting to build the things I mentioned above. I also was able to get all of the models for my two lists together for one big completed army picture set so enjoy!
Paradigm wrote:What a fantastic army, something to be truly proud of! Hope it does well, and even if not, it'll look awesome either way!
I am hoping to win at least one of two of the games, if not I will have fun as it will be the first time I will field the army fully painted
Spacewolverine wrote:That is stunning Ustello, nice work! All your highlights on themy and the unhelmeted guys just pop man. That rapier looks a little lonely though
I used to hate painting skin but it is now one of my favorite parts, so I try and do a few enough to break up the models but not a lot to break fluff. And yes the poor rapier is lonely but he will probably be getting a brother soon
Well my last update before I leave tomorrow, I blasted through and almost finished the dreadnought drop pod minus the weathering and matting down the transfers. I will be playing two games on saturday with ash and I will try and post some pictures of the games when I get back on sunday. I will also post the video (s) on here when they go up, idk if I will watch them though as I hate hearing my own voice on video
An army and a half there Ustrello, congratulations. A nice mix of infantryand big guns, and just shows how the Calth boxed set has bought many (myself included) over to the HH. I just wish that I had not shared my AL scheme with you as my poor battle brothers are strewn all over the place
Thraxas Of Turai wrote: I just wish that I had not shared my AL scheme with you as my poor battle brothers are strewn all over the place
I think you mean 'have infiltrated all over the place'...
That isn't a severed head on the Contemptor's base, it's a heavily concealed Alpha Legionnaire setting a trap that the Dreadnought has just walked right into. One second later, and the rest of him will burst from the ground, meltabomb in hand, to turn the metal menace into scrap! Hydra Dominatus!
evildrcheese wrote:Nice dread droppod so far, is that the ride for the Leviathan?
EDC
Only the best ride for my little murderous washing machine

40kFSU wrote:I cant believe I have neglected your thread. Awesome army shot sir. Extra points for the FW drop pod. Going the extra mile!
Its all good man, and thanks thankfully my local gw has great light so taking pictures there is awesome and easy.
Well I am back from canada and playing ash. We got two games in and they were a lot of fun, it was nice playing against a fully painted army on a table with nice terrain. I won't give out any spoilers, but the games won't be posted until august and september. But I can say they were a lot of fun to shoot, so hopefully it comes across in the video as such.
But I do have pictures from the games including a few action shots, I also was able to build my 3rd terrain piece tonight along with washing corax and the laser vindicator destroyer.
So I was able to build the laser vindicator today along with corax finally. I messed up on his jump pack, but I built it in a way that makes it look like he is dropping down instead of swooping and I kinda like it. I will be priming and hopefully airbrushing them tomorrow (if it isn't too hot). I plan on making the killed marine on corax's base a word bearer because I think that the red will help accent the model and that I actually have word bearer transfers left over from my BaC set
evildrcheese wrote:Cool. I love the Laser Destroyer Vindi, so cool.
EDC
It is an awesome model!
40kFSU wrote:Good idea on the Word Bearer. I think he will compliment the black well. And I'm looking forward to seeing the Vindicator, I like that model a lot.
Yeah I can't wait to start corax he is going to be so much fun.
Well I was able to start the laser vindicator today, but I was only able to get the base coats and metals down only to realize I have run out of agrax so tomorrow I will pick some up and continue on with this beast
evildrcheese wrote:God damn you work fast! Looking good dude.

Thanks! I am still in that get everything painted for the youtube games crunch
angelofvengeance wrote:Ahhh yes. The Agrax must flow! Lol. Never enough Agrax is there? Lol.
Took me ages to get hold of the LD vindicator when it first came out. Very popular kit apparently.
It is an awesome model right? And the rules for it are pretty damn good so I can see why it is popular and yeah agrax is literally the best wash so I can see why I run out a lot
Paradigm wrote:Coming along nicely! What else do you have planned for the army after Corax and the Vindi?
Honestly? No I got nothing, well I mean I got 5 melta supports and 5 lascannon dudes plus a plastic vindicator. I plan on making my armies on parade board and a few of the dark mechanicus before I leave for university. After that I plan on doing some ashen claws blackshields as a small fun army
Not a whole lot to comment on, I was pretty busy today so I only got the washing, heat stressing and finishing the white on the vindicator. So I should have him done by tomorrow and start work on building my last building and prepping them for my AoP board. I am going with a dark grey for the buildings so they match most tables and will be a nice contrast to the teal blue and red of the mechanicus models
Amazingly good work on the Raven Guard over these pages. A very impressive looking force, and you're a braver man than I am to assemble that Fire Raptor.
evildrcheese wrote:Nice work on the quad laser, looks ace.

Thanks man! I am glad I learned how to do heat stressing as it has served me well so far
Spacewolverine wrote:Definitely agree, the laser looks incredible! Still love the ARMY pics!
I am still in awe that I have actually finished an entire army for once in my life
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Hey! Everyone else is taking my lines! The Laser truly does look amazing, contrasting with the matte black of the armor.

Azazelx wrote:Amazingly good work on the Raven Guard over these pages. A very impressive looking force, and you're a braver man than I am to assemble that Fire Raptor.
I have said many times that it is the worst sculpt I have ever dealt with...and now I want to get a storm eagle because the raven guard have a special variant of it that causes blind and concussive on the missile blasts
Well I have almost finished the vindicator, minus sealing and matting down the transfers. I have also basically finished Corax's decorative base bar painting the rim, sealing and matting the dead word bearer's transfers and painting the blank parts of the base (what should I paint that? the marble or the stone color?)
angelofvengeance wrote:Loving that very-much-dead Word Bearer. The Colchisian cuneiform looks awesome.
Its a transfer from the BaC kit actually, they have a lot of nice ones for the WBs on there
Spacewolverine wrote:Having beautiful models that call your name everytime you look at them makes a big difference too.
Nice progress on Corax's base.
Thanks man!
Well the raven guard are coming to a close, I finished the laser destroyer and corax is rapidly following. I got the base coats down on him today and hope to have him finished by next week, starting tomorrow though I will be making my armies on parade board and starting to finish my dark mechanicus (hopefully slowly over the fall semester) and after that the plan is to start a 30k blackshields army which I have 10 terminators already made up for.
Paradigm wrote:The Laser Destroyer is looking superb! Can't wait to see Corax either.
What sort of scheme and theme do you have in mind for the Blackshields?
They will be ashen claws (so dark red and black) they were the terran members of the 19th legion before corax took over. He didn't like them so he sent them to the far side of the galaxy to crusade and all of a sudden they disappear and return back as space pirates
angelofvengeance wrote:Lovely job on Corax and the LD vindicator . Still debating on whether to paint mine in Dark Angels 30K colours or 40K colours.
Yeah the WB transfers are really nice .
They actually changed the dark angels colors so they could sell more green paint (or make a green paint set) actually so I say go with black
So I started work on my armies on parade board since I am almost done with the legion. I have made the general layout of the board, it will be the fall of uraniborg to chaos and the last ditch defense by the scions holding the bunker. I think I got a good model layout for this one (the IK will be replaced by my chaos one later on). What do you all think is it too busy? I will be adding smoke coming from the buildings (cotton and those flicker candles) and a piece of cloth with a chaos star hanging over one of the buildings signaling the new rulers at a later point. Now this is a rough draft, I still have to seal the base colors in, get the crackle paint down, spray it a martian iron earth color with the airbrush and then seal that in.
Excellent work on the AOP board! Corax is looking phenomenal, as is the vindicator. Those two are excellent models to purchase. Ready for the finished products!
evildrcheese wrote:Nice work on the armies on the armies on parade board so far.

JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Excellent work on the AOP board! Corax is looking phenomenal, as is the vindicator. Those two are excellent models to purchase. Ready for the finished products!
Soon, hopefully very soon. Maybe by wednesday at the latest for coarx
Januine wrote:Awesome start Ustrello. That's gonna look the business. What the deal with AoP boards - are there like any rules/ guidelines etc that go with?
A few rules, gw models and it can't be bigger than a 2 foot by 2 foot board. And it can be one model or an entire army, they are super fun to do and a good motivator to finish a army
Paradigm wrote: Cool stuff, the contrast on the wings is great!
Thanks man! I didn't have the know how to recreate the effects that the forgeworld team did do I just copied the dark furies.
Well with corax now finished my raven guard 30k army is complete (minus one plastic dread, 5 melta supports and 5 lascannon heavy weapons that I don't really need at the moment). He was a gorgeous model and the face was so detailed that my camera was picking up the models face as an actual face . With that I will be working on my dark mechanicus and the armies on parade board and after that I will be starting my new 30k blackshields army!
Spent most of today painting my terrain for the armies on parade board (also waiting on the crackle paste to dry for the board itself it may take a few days to completely dry). I was going for dark subtle terrain (dark grey almost black base, agrax wash and a few lighter grey drybrushes) as to create a contrast for the blue and red of the board. So I have a bunker for the scions to make their last stand, a ruined manufactorum, and two other destroyed buildings. I will be trying to get some work in on the pipe relay and the destroyed tank terrain also and decide on a scheme for the scions, anyone have any suggestions for cool regiments or colors?
evildrcheese wrote:Nice work on the armies on the armies on parade board so far.

Haha. Yeah, a couple of weeks in Portugal, but I'm keeping an eye on a few choice threads here on Dakka. I even smuggled some hobby stuff out with me to get a bit of painting done

Must be nice getting away from overcast england right? and thanks! The hair is actually incubi darkness with a nuln oil wash(s)
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Well done on these fortifications! The Gold is an excellent contrast to the dark grey/black!
Yeah the new golds put out by GW are just awesome and I highly suggest them!
Well I have finished the promethium pipe relays, I am keeping them pretty simple so they don't detract from anything on the board. I also got some work in on the vanguard squad getting the base coats of green and some of the metal and skin done. I hope to have these ten mostly done before I leave for GenCon this wednesday!
Also for my upcoming blackshields army I am thinking of new skin colors and I came across a malefic flesh set by vallejo made for nocturna. It seems like for blue to violet to green and even white skin tones. What do you all think? The blackshields have set up their empire in the ghoul stars in the fluff so I figure maybe some mutations and what not.
Some more work on the vanguards, I got the rest of the silver metals and coppers down and I washed the teal. Tomorrow they should be all finished up just in time for me to leave for GenCon . I am hoping to get all of the models done (10 vanguards 5 rust stalkers and 5 infiltrators along with the 10 vanguards) before I leave for college so I do not have to worry about the armies on parade board. After that I will start work on my second 30k army the blackshields
The scenery looks great, and great to see some Dark Mechanicus. Personally I found the Skitarii miniatures a lot of fun to paint, hope you have the same experience.
Thraxas Of Turai wrote:The scenery looks great, and great to see some Dark Mechanicus. Personally I found the Skitarii miniatures a lot of fun to paint, hope you have the same experience.
They are pretty fun to paint, just lots of a purity seals I have to clip off
Januine wrote:nice job Ustrello. Colour choice for your DarkMech is lush. Terrain piece are coming along sweet too
Well they will get much brighter (color wise no idea why my phone hates taking pictures of them) and yeah the terrain was fun to do, simple but it gets the idea across
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Pipes are looking sufficiently dingy! I'm also liking the dark blue you've chosen for the DM color scheme!
They are actually a teal color as you will see in the next picture. I personally liked the idea of a brightly colored hell forge scheme seeding confusing upon their enemies
Well I pretty much finished these guys not quite making my promise to finish them before I left for GenCon. I still got to dry brush and seal the base, plus transfers and weathering but I can do all of that on monday and sunday when I get back
Gen con was great per usual and I was able to pick up 3 jet bikes and 5 mk 2 assault marines for my blackshields along with new dice for the army. And speaking of which when I returned home from the trip a package from forgeworld had arrived for me dropping of HH book 6, a mk 2 command set to be converted into a reaver lord, 10 despoilers to be converted into marauders ( 5 mk 2 and 5 mk 3), a land raider phobos and some chain axes for the marauders. So today I got them all washed and even started work on building them.
I got the reaver lord with cyber familiar and halo blade converted up, along with 5 mk 3 marauders (the chief has a power fist instead of an chain axe) and I finished one jet bike with magenitized weapons and him carrying a banner so the victims know the Ashen Claws have come for them!
Hung out with some friends and we did a bunch of hobbying, and I was able to get the last two jet bikes done, along with the land raider, 5 more marauders, and 5 assault marines. So that leaves me with my black shields built (minus stuff I still need to buy). I am considering putting some sort of larger skull on the top of the banner to make it less bland but idk. what do you all think?
A skull atop the banner would be cool, maybe a large bird skull as a hint to their heritage? Raven skulls are dead easy to make by filing down wolf skulls, so if you know any SW players you should be able to find something suitable.
Paradigm wrote: A skull atop the banner would be cool, maybe a large bird skull as a hint to their heritage? Raven skulls are dead easy to make by filing down wolf skulls, so if you know any SW players you should be able to find something suitable.
That is a good idea, I will have to look into that.
Not a whole lot done today, mainly just freehanding the chaos stars on the vanguards and laying down the transfers. I will seal those in and then weather powder the cloaks of the vanguards and they will be done. I also got a test mini done for the ashen claws, they say that the ashen claws are a dull red with black power armor so I was mainly focusing on the red as I have the black down. I also tried to give the test model green eyes but it feels oddly christmasy to me, maybe blue eyes? Anyways I will include a comparison picture so you all can get what I am going for
Scheme looks great. I'd love to see some more detail of the space marine in your "shadowed lord" piece, if you get a chance to take a few more pictures.
evildrcheese wrote:Test scheme is looking great. The stroy about the Ashen Claws in book 6 is great. I really like the style with all the clips of transmissions etc.

Same here, though I wish they included some actual pictures of the ashen claw marines instead of the distorted video capture ones.
Heretic Tom wrote:Scheme looks great. I'd love to see some more detail of the space marine in your "shadowed lord" piece, if you get a chance to take a few more pictures.
Yeah for sure, here are a few from when I finished the marine but not the rest of the model
Thraxas Of Turai wrote:Have not really encountered the Ashen Claws before, that scheme looks great. Good work on the Vanguards as well Us.
They are a blackshields and HH6 is fairly new so you might see more of them soon. They are super fluffy though and in some points aren't as good as a normal legion but they are still really fun
Automatically Appended Next Post: Slow painting day today, I only got the three destroyed tank bits for the armies on parade board done. But that means I only have the 5 scions to go til all of the terrain is finished, along with the 10 rangers 5 infiltrators and 5 rust stalkers. Tomorrow I plan on starting some of my blackshields to get a feel for them.
So I got some work in on the assault marines, I am happy with how the duller red has come out and I am really liking the gw bases and how they have turned out (weathered brass and a blueish green pavement). I could potentially have these guys done by tomorrow and then I might work on the reaver lord or dark mechanicus.
Well I am away from home for the weekend so I do not have my usual set up, but I was still able to finish the highlights on the marines and lay down the transfers. I still have to work on the power weapons, seal the transfers in, do some weathering, finish the guns and the eye lenses. It sounds like a lot, but I should finish it all tomorrow
They are looking great. It's normally hard to make red marines look good, but yours look grand. The goldish bronze accents help too! I'm also a sucker for heresy jump packs!
Very nice. Great work on the bases. I got some of the GW bases but I couldn't resist adding more stuff to them to make them more 3D and to help tie them into the theme of my existing bases

Yeah the GW bases are great but they are kinda flat (but can you really be angry? they are like 55 cents a base )
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Wow, well done! You've managed to paint five glorious models fast than I can finish one!
It took me years to get to this point, once it took me a month to get 5 models done
Well I have gotten some more work done, this time almost finishing the reaver lord (just need to seal and matte the transfers) and starting work on his marauders. Also my friends and I plan on making a small youtube channel for fun and to promote the hobby and we were lucky in the fact that one of our group members has terrain from games day when it was held in the US, so we will have some great terrain to start (including a cathedral that fits most of a 6x4 board)
(better pictures of this guy and the assault marines tomorrow it is past 1 am here and I am too tired to take good pictures )

The Lord is awesome, love that weapon and the effect you've used on it!
Yep! So far we got 6 or 7 30k armies varying from loyalist traitor and space pirates, about 5 or so 40k armies and we got 1 AoS army but we are planning on doing bat reps for all 3 usually one or two videos a week. We plan on starting this spring once we got everything down. We also plan on having 4 or 5 different tables too.
As for the reaver lord thanks! I decided to gloss the power weapons to give it more of a sheen to it
Stormwall wrote:That is going to be an amazing board.

I know right? We are so hyped to have gotten that games day terrain, as I said above we already have a trench warfare type table also that I might be able to snag pictures of soon. And I am glad I could spread knowledge of every ones favorite space pirates
Well as promised here are some better pictures of my reaver lord and assault marines. I went glyph heavy on the reaver lord because I think a man able to lead the AC would have lots of markings on him, I modeled him with the halo blade (different version of the paragon blade) and his cyber familiar (because what sort of respectable pirate dosen't have some sort of bird on his shoulder? )

It is super easy actually, MWG has a lightning claw tutorial that I follow and just adapt for power swords and add in some thinned down white for the "lightning" effect

A buddy of ours actually acquired it from games day back when it was also held in the states so thank the terrain builders for that event we just got lucky that we have it.
As promised the first video of my games with ash at GMG is up! I think the game went as well as it could and my voice didnt sound too bad on recording (fun fact I hate the sound of my voice on recording)
Ustrello, it makes my heart weep to see such a glorious battle played out on a awesome table with awesome miniatures. Truly well done.
Quick question:
I own that playmat myself but haven't gotten the chance to use it yet. Did it add to the environment and enjoyably of the game? How was it with dice dropping on it and such?
I use to have a gaming room set up in my parents garage but they took it down. I miss having my own table to game on

Thanks man! I had a great time and ash was a pretty chill dude, though the rules lawyers really didn't like that game with how badly we messed up pile in
As for the mats I think they do add a lot to the game, putting down nice terrain on a black felt table or primed black board takes away from how nice the terrain is. As for dice dropping I did not notice much of a difference, more of noise difference to be honest. I would totally get one if you can afford it or dont want to paint any tiles from GW secret weapon etc.
Thanks insaniak! We are hoping to start filming this spring or maybe late winter depending
Thraxas Of Turai wrote:Cool report, that is a beautiful AL army that Ash has. And in other news my missus thinks you are hot

Don't worry, I think the majority of us hate how we sound on recording (main reason I dislike phone calls with feedback!)
Yep! Thankfully I didn't look like too much of a slob
Well my first time painting in a week or two and I started work on the marauder squad, they may sit for a while like this as I need to finish the rest of my dark mechanicus and the board. And because of the coming deadline for AoP and limited time they need to be done quickly.
Januine wrote: f'sure. RG T-s would be sweet. I really want a Gaunts Ghosts/Tanith one and/or AdMech. Amazed FW doesnt sell them online. They would clean up
They would, but I imagine shipping may be a reason for not doing it.
Well the long weekend is upon us americans so I have decided to get as much of my dark mechanicus done in preparation for AoP since I do not think I will have a lot of time to work on them before the 15th of October. So tonight I started on my primed infiltrators and got them almost finished. I will most likely finish them tomorrow and I will then start work on the rangers and scions for the bunker.
Ok, just dropped by to check out the awesome since I've been absent a while. Quick question before I start going over what I missed, are the Ravens done? Have you gone Heretic!?!
40kFSU wrote: Ok, just dropped by to check out the awesome since I've been absent a while. Quick question before I start going over what I missed, are the Ravens done? Have you gone Heretic!?!
Yes I would call them done bar a plastic contemptor 5 lascannons and a melta gun tactical support squad , as for the heretic I wouldn't call them that just some un loved space pirates
Spacewolverine wrote:They are looking great. It's normally hard to make red marines look good, but yours look grand. The goldish bronze accents help too! I'm also a sucker for heresy jump packs!

Damn thats a nice board and unit, will have to steal that Hellhound extra armor

Yeah we are very excited to use it
Well the long weekend is almost over and I got a lot done. The infiltrators and vanguards are done just waiting on the weathering power and the rangers are just waiting for the rims to be painted and the transfers to be seal and matted then weathering powder. So that means in about 2 days I have finished 15 models (a new record ). You all might not see me on this thread for a bit as I do not know the next time I will be able to paint but hopefully soon!
evildrcheese wrote:Cool stuff. The Dark Mech Rangers are looking great.

Thanks man!
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:What an excellent choice of color scheme! And so swiftly as well, congrats!
I am really happy I picked out this blue for them as it has worked out very well so far
Well I finally finished the rangers and with that I was able to get the weathering powder down on the rangers vanguard and infiltrators. So with that I only have 5 rust stalkers and 6 kataphrons til the entire army is done! I expect to work on them again when I go home in a few weeks so until then keep painting everyone
Blimey Ustrello the rate and quality at which you paint never ceases to amaze, you are a one man army making machine. The weathering powders have worked a treat, they are especially effective on the Ruststalkers. Am interested to see your take on the Kataphrons as well, what weapon choices have you gone for?

Thanks man, I am making up for years of plastic or primed armies , and glad you like the weathering powders I am a huge fan of them now. As for the kataphrons I am thinking of having one plasma and one grav weapons
Well then it has been a while since I have posted anything but school has kept me busy. But I did get to come home this weekend so I rushed to finish the last bits for my armies on parade and start a primed model stockpile for the coming winter. I was able to paint all of the scions for the AoP board along with getting a banner to hang off of one of the buildings done and on saturday I even won the GW painting competition with my "starter" set of HH raven guard . It is weird getting an AoP board done weeks before the competition so now I can sit back and watch everyone else rush to finish.
Well it has been a while since I last posted. But school is going well it is just not leaving me much free time to do painting, but I will be going to my local GW for armies on parade and I feel that I may be spitballing for a new 40k army soon after I finish the dark mechanicus.
In the mean time the second bat rep with ash got posted a week ago and I realized I forgot to post it here.
Well then it has been a while hope you all haven't missed me too much . But with winter break coming up and having a month and a half for painting and building I have been preparing what I need to do slowly in my mind and one of those have been on my black shields army and a LOW I want to use with them.
So likeI said I will be getting a knight soon and I wanted to try out doing some metallic color schemes specifically with the forgeworld clear paints. Now I know I will need a metallic undercoat and I am planning on quartering or halving red and blue so what would be the best metallic for it silver or gold? Secondly I am fairly new to the clear paint concept so would I base the metallic and then work some areas up to a brighter silver or gold to show where the sun would be hitting? Also do I preshade the recesses with black or just shade later with an actual shade. Lastly what is the general opinion on FW clear paints?
Heretic Tom wrote: I don't know much about the clear paints, but if you're doing blue and red I'd suggest silver rather than gold. Good luck with the knight!!
Also, is there a particular brand or set of weathering powders you'd recommend?
That is what I was thinking, the gold would of worked well with the red but probably not the blue.
As for weathering powder I personally use forgeworld (expensive) or secret weapon miniatures
I welcome your return with open arms! I've never bought from FW, so I cannot attest to the quality of their modelling supplies. But all in all, welcome back!
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote: I welcome your return with open arms! I've never bought from FW, so I cannot attest to the quality of their modelling supplies. But all in all, welcome back!
Thanks man, through some other places I have learned that the clear paints from FW are much better than the stuff from any other paint provider.
According the the Horus Heresy Masterclass, clear paints go over silver basecoat. You can do the preshading with blue and green clear paints, where blue is lighter shadow and green overlapping blue would be darkest parts.
From my short experience with clear paints, you just need two different paints - one brighter and one darker. I/e, Iron Hands Steel and Stormhost Silver on top. I havent tried preshading tho.
And yeah, I've been observing people painting their Mechanicums for quite some time. Angron Red is, imo, superior to Tamya klear :>
As an alternative Ustrello - ElectricEve over on Twitch (Emma who used to do some of the GW tutorial vids alongside the mighty Duncan) just put this handy little guide up on doing 1Ksons metallic red w/out using the FW clear paints. Have a gander

Thanks! I have seen though that the red works the best with a gold or bronze type color to make it warmer and deeper

Ohh I like that, sadly it may not work on the knight as it will be a lot of large flat panels. But it will work on some scenery marines I will be painting up.
Well I finally got some building in over break, this may be all that I get done as a lot of my time is being taken up for a wedding I am apart of. But hey at least I got something done right? I recently put in a forgeworld order as well so my blackshields bar anything major have all been purchased. My break starts in about two weeks so hopefully you all will see a lot of me over that.
So with finals week almost over I decided to buy myself my christmas present early so I can take full advantage of a month and a half of hobby time. With that I sold a few old armies and bought the rest of my blackshields force which included
Knight Castigator with new head
Sicaran venator
6 out rider bikes
Chain axes
Demios rhino
Two Laser vindicators
Chain axes for the last marauder squad and forgeworld clear blue and red paint
In addition to trying and to build and paint the above I have 10 more plastic mk 3 maraines I am turning into marauders and then 10 more assault marines so it will be a tight schedule but I think I can knock a large majority of the army out. So with that I will hopefully see you all on thursday night when I start the washing process
Paradigm wrote:Nice haul! Have fun working through all that!
I am excited! But I think I can get out 10 regular dudes in 3 or so days so I can do the main troops in a week or so, then a week for the knight, 3 or so days for all of the vehicles each, jet bikes 3 days so I can feasibly do it all in a month if I work fast and hard

What's in the cardboard envelope? Knight castigator transfers?
One of my favorite units! And just a transfer sheet for the blackshields, I am planning on using the futuristic military transfer sheet for the knight

I have to admit I laughed when I read "early Christmas present". Great excuse in my eyes! Gonna have to get that resin cleaned though - always the worst part about FW stuff IMO.

Yeah it literally is the worst
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Resin cleaning? Well dang, i've asked for FW stuff this year and am not familiar with this. What exactly does this entail?
You have to wash the resin from FW to get the release agent off otherwise the primer wont hold and the paint will chip off. As for how you get a bin and fill it with warm water and degreasing soap, let it sit for 15 20 minutes and stir it occasionally. Then you wash the resin with a toothbrush and let it dry, if there are still those shiney spots after the first wash give it a second wash

Yeah thankfully my sink has a drain cover on it for catching vegetable peels and what not so it has saved me once or twice.
Well it is my first day back from winter break (so far out of 6 classes 4 As and one B (the B being my biggest worry class)) and I have managed to wash all of the resin I have gotten from forgeworld (minus one laser vindicator that I had forgotten but will get to tomorrow). I hopefully will keep up this pace and have everything assembled by the end of the weekend so I can start to prime and paint on monday. Also my sotar 2020 came in and I am hyped as hell to use it
So hopefully this won't automatically append, but today I got my venerator, rhino, 3 out riders, laser vindicator and imperial knight all built. All that is left is three more out riders and one more laser vindicator.
I'm sub assembling the knight so the armor plates will be staying off for the time being
Sweet monkey-jeebus! On a roll here aren't we, Ustrello? I've still got to finish building my laser vindi and my outriders. Love the big venerator tank.
angelofvengeance wrote: Sweet monkey-jeebus! On a roll here aren't we, Ustrello? I've still got to finish building my laser vindi and my outriders. Love the big venerator tank.
I am making up for 3 months of lost hobby time . The venerator is a sweet looking tank but it was a pain to put together I gotta gap fill it a bit later today
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote: My my my! Plenty of work here for the next couple week/months, eh ustrello?
Yeah you could say that , I want to get the bulk of the army done before the month is over so I can possibly finish it up over spring break.
Well today was a slow day, I got the last three outriders completed and gave the sgt a power fist because why not , I also made the knight base a bit more urban rubbley buy adding a dead marine and some sprue bits to represent steel girders. Up next I gotta build the last ten marauders, laser vindicator and the landspeeder. But I am waiting on a volkite culvern bit to build the landspeeder
Sweeeeeeeeeeeet resin loveliness !!!!! Great haul. Esp like the look of that ven. Can see me getting one to add to my admech forge. The forge of the lost. The outrider bikes really do knock the reg gw bikes out of the game. Gorgeous stuff Ustrello

The Outriders kit is actually based on the Scout bike chassis which I think is generally better overall. There's much more ground clearance on them compared to the PA bikers.

The venerator was a sick kit, but like the fire raptor/storm eagle had some fitting issues. As for the bikes they are sweet that is for sure, I can't wait to use them
Thraxas Of Turai wrote:You are smashing it with these builds Us, I love the Outriders but when combined with those tanks and the Knight it is hard to pick a favorite.
Personally I pick the knight, mainly because they are so cool and can have so much personality.

You are correct! The scout bikes do have a lot more clearance, and because of the resin bits it covers the terrible mould lines and not quite fitting parts that are so prevalent in the bike kits
Well a bit more work done, I built up the landspeeder with havoc launchers and volkite culvern (still waiting on that bit). I also made sure to make the pilot and gunner more heresy like and gave them mk 3 helmets torsos and shoulder pads. Also my ashen claws vehicle markers came in so I started putting them down on vehicles including not show the knight carapace.
WarbossDakka wrote:Wow, the amount of vehicles there must mean you're getting your use out the markers! Well done.
Yep! But I got a lot of little tiny ones that I may use on the bikes but we will see

Haha well the rest of the came in and the rest were As .
Well today was a slow day, I got some more paint down on the marauders from earlier in the fall, mainly getting the reds and rest of the metals done. Plus the hair for the one dude, I also got building on the rest of the marauders but I got tired so I called it quits before I finished the rest. I used an old 40k marine re-breather head for the chief and I gotta say it makes the model look much more menacing.
All the stuff you're building looks great! Love the icons too.
EDC
Yeah that is what a winter break plus not going back to your old job will do to you, loads of free time
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Those are some cool lookin' icons! For me, the building can sometimes be the most fun part, provided there's variation.
I like building myself, but sometimes it can get tedious especially with the all resin kits from forgeworld.
Paradigm wrote:Coming along nicely, that is such a mean scheme these guys have.
Thanks para! And you are right black and red always seems like such a menacing color
Well as the title states I am completely done with the build for this army (bar any green stuffing I need to do for some gaps). Today I finished the last 10 marauders (still have to fill the backpack lines), the laser vindicator and by far my favorite the consul herald.
A simple conversion, just a mk3 power fist and shoulder pad from the BoP kit and the mk2 command squad. But the banner for blackshields is sick as it gives +1 LD and fear to any blackshield units within its 12" bubble.
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Blessed day it is indeed, the building is near completion! That standard bearer looks pretty nice ustrello, can't wait to see him painted up!
I am really hyped to paint him up as well, plus his rules are awesome for a blackshield army.
Well I am almost done with the first 5 marauders, bar sealing in the transfers and fixing my failed attempt at hazard striping they should be done soon. Up next is a marathon priming session on monday to get everything complete and then I will start on the next 5 marauders and possibly start on the knight we will see.
Hazard striping is always an excellent spot pattern for an army, just a bit of a touch-up, I should think. Next time, use bits of masking tape to keep the lines straight, whilst allowing you to be as messy as you do.
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote: Hazard striping is always an excellent spot pattern for an army, just a bit of a touch-up, I should think. Next time, use bits of masking tape to keep the lines straight, whilst allowing you to be as messy as you do.
Yeah that is a good idea I got some small tamiya tape but the axe areas are super small I may just have to clean it up old fashion way
So my volkite culverin showed up today so I was able to get it into the gunners position completing the last model needed for my 3k list. I have also got some more work in on the marauders but not enough to justify a picture I think, they should be done tomorrow including the hazard striping so expect to see them sometime tomorrow. After that I am deciding if I should just burn through all of the troops first and then move onto the cool stuff afterwards, what do you all think?
Gah!!! I love the look of 30K so much, and that gun itself almost sells me on the setting. I cannot afford to get back into GW, but you all make it so hard to resist. I cannot decide if I like that model more than the 30k landspeeder though.
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:That sounds like a good plan to me! Another option could be to alternate, and have infantry, fun model, then infantry to entertain yourself.
Yeah I may do that.

I love 30k and the plastic models make it much easier to afford. But the big toys are still forgeworld and more expensive than the gw counter parts. Personally I am not the biggest fan of the javelin don't know why
Jehan-reznor wrote:Cool stuff but isn't that Land Speeder 40k?

Guildenstern wrote:very cool ustrello!

that way you won't burn out!
Looking great =D
Yeah I will probably do 10 regular guys and then something cool. Still gotta decide on the cool, maybe the knight? Haha
Well as promised I have finished the marauders. I decided to make their chain axes and thereby bodies fairly bloody as the chain axe is not an elegant weapon. Up next I will be able to prime the army this thursday so tomorrow will just probably be prep for me and that is about it. Also every year my GW does a secret santa and this year I got a GSC leman russ and a GSC armored hybrid claw box! So a pretty nifty pick up to add to the subterranean uprising
Great stuff, they look ready to cause some carnage! I know I've said it before, but that black and red combo is so striking, seeing a bunch finished together really does look fantastic!
Paradigm wrote:Great stuff, they look ready to cause some carnage! I know I've said it before, but that black and red combo is so striking, seeing a bunch finished together really does look fantastic!
I really wanted to have them seem like they were stuck in with the enemy blood flowing and splattered everywhere. But yeah I love the black and red myself glad that FW chose it as the color scheme
WarbossDakka wrote:Looking sweet.
Thanks man!
As many of you will know it is winter in America and I cannot prime in my home so winter is usually a very slow period for me hobby wise. Thankfully I was able to get a whole bunch of priming in courtesy of a friend and with that I was able to prime the entire army which included 10 terminators, 3 jet bikes, 6 out riders, 1 landspeeder, 10 assault marines, 15 marauders, one dark heral (consul upgrade option), 2 apothecaries, 1 venetor, 1 rhino, 2 laser vindicators, and finally the knight castigator.
Small update time. With the family here for the holidays I have not had much time to hobby sadly .
But I was able to snag the primus medicae model from games workshop, I personally like the model and the sculpting on it is very nice. I swapped the needle gun out for a combi bolter as I do not like the needle gun . I also was able to get some paint down on the next 5 marauders, apothecary and land speeder for the army.
Cool stuff, looking forward to that Medicae as it's a very interesting sculpt, not often you see Marines wearing gear over their armour, it's a cool concept.
Hey, slowly but surely there ustrello, whatever progress you have is good! The primus medicae looks good, but doesn't look cheap either, might need to pick one up.
Paradigm wrote:Cool stuff, looking forward to that Medicae as it's a very interesting sculpt, not often you see Marines wearing gear over their armour, it's a cool concept.
Yeah I am wondering how I will paint the outer clothing for this guy. Obviously it can't be black or red
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Hey, slowly but surely there ustrello, whatever progress you have is good! The primus medicae looks good, but doesn't look cheap either, might need to pick one up.
True that, and he wasn't too expensive about 43$ after tax so in line with most characters from forgeworld
Well what a year it has been, I finally took the plunge into 30k completing a full raven guard army with over 3k points for that alone and I almost finished my dark mechanicus army (which will be my first fully painted 40k army). I have also seen the progress that I have made and it is awesome to see the difference between models. So this year I plan on completing my dark mechanicus army (only 11 models left!), finish my blackshields army, start my GSC army and possibly start a AoS army.
In more present terms I have gotten a large chunk of the next 5 marauders done, I really like the forgeworld bare heads as they allow for more expression and I like the look of disgust that the sgts head has in it and I feel that the pale purple skintone makes it even more so.
The marauders and their apothecary are almost complete. All that is left is to seal in the transfers, bloody up the marauders and paint the rims of their bases. Up next I believe I will work on the primus medicae and finish up the landspeeder as it is almost partially done.
Those are some great lookin' marauders! Mk 2 armor really suits them! The power sword on the apothecary was also an excellent choice. I envision him hacking through waves of enemies to save a fallen battle brother.
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote: Those are some great lookin' marauders! Mk 2 armor really suits them! The power sword on the apothecary was also an excellent choice. I envision him hacking through waves of enemies to save a fallen battle brother.
I do like the mk2 helmets because it is easier to paint the lenses but I prefer the mk3 bodies as they look bulkier and are easier to paint as for the apothecary I gave him the sword so the squad would have one more ap 3 weapon
Well today was a busy day, I finished the apothecary, and marauders bloodying them up matting down the transfers and painting the rims on the bases. As a treat for myself I decided to paint up the primus medicae to test out my scheme on terminators and I believe it worked out well. Better pictures will be up sometime tomorrow
evildrcheese wrote: Ooo pretty Apothecaries, such a shame I couldn't get down to GW to pick up one of the terminators :(
EDC
Yeah I think they get rid of them soon if not already. Maybe call around some store may have one or two.
Well I finally got around to taking some pictures of the primus, apothecary and marauders. So far the primus medicae is my favorite model in the entire army he is just the right amount of bulk and the rebreather head looks awesome. It turns out the batteries I had been using for my light box were a tad old so I used some fresh ones and what do you know it made the pictures look a million times better, I also just about finished the landspeeder today just waiting on the transfers to dry then I will seal and matte them in. Afterwords is the next 5 assault marines for the 15 man assault blob.
For such a small model it does have a menacing appearance
Paradigm wrote:Those are some frightening medics! Really like the Primus.
I wouldn't want to be facing down the primus any time soon did you end up getting once? I think one would look really cool in your shattered legions army

Thanks jan! Praise coming from an amazing painter like you is always great to get. Also keep up the good job with eisenhorn and the twitch channel it was a good time to watch.
Well I finished the landspeeder today, not a lot of pictures as it is a fairly standard thing with not a whole lot of detail. I already started the next 5 assault marines getting the off black base coat down and the skin tones started for the non helmet marines. My plan is to have the last 10 assault marines and 10 reavers plus jump pack apothecary done before I leave back for college. If I do that it will leave me with the knight, laser vindicators, rhino, sicaran, out riders, jet bikes, terminators, and land raider left.
No Primus Medicae for me, I didn't have anywhere local to pick one up and I think I'm going to try and go 'Marine clean' for a month or two anyway as I painted so many of them last year! I'm not ruling out a conversion along similar lines in future, I like the idea of a Marine whose job is so messy he needs to wear stuff over his armour!
How long does this leave you to do the last Assault Marines and Reavers?

Fair enough, the model also made him seem menacing but almost tired at the same time so I thought it would fit the shattered legion army well . As for the assault marines and the marauders (idk why I keep on calling them reavers probably because they remind me of reavers from firefly ) I have ten days before I head back so I should at least get the ten assault marines done.
It was a pretty low key day today, so not a whole lot done. I was able to airbrush the base coats onto all of my remaining vehicles and I was able to quarter the silver onto the knight. Sadly even after washing twice and using testors dullcote spray on the bare resin it is still flaking primer in some areas. So my last resort will be to sand those areas and then put down some more primer with my airbrush as I don't want to disturb the silver.
A bit more work done today, I got about 50ish percent of the next 5 assault marines done. Just got to do highlighting a bit of layering and transfers and they should be done, after that is the next 5 assault marines and then their apothecary
Well as promised I am almost done with the 5 assault marines! All that is left is to seal in the transfers matte them down and finally paint the rims of the bases. I also ordered some airbrush primer as my knight armor plates are chipping primer after two scrubs and coating it with dullcote, the plan is to sand the areas then airbrush prime it as I have already started to quarter the armor plates and I don't want to ruin what progress I have made. Also I got some air brush paints coming in for the reds for my vehicles so sometime next week expect to see some work done on the vehicles beyond the basecoating.
Looking awesome. Shame about the Knight primer, but I think you're doing it right by making sure the primer is down. What do you use to varnish your minis?
WarbossDakka wrote: Looking awesome. Shame about the Knight primer, but I think you're doing it right by making sure the primer is down. What do you use to varnish your minis?
For transfers I just use vallejo gloss to seal them in but for really stubborn greasy resin bits I use testors dull cote spray
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote: Mighty well done, primer is a tricky thing, isn't it? I have to paint mine on these days.
When the resin is the greasiest you have ever seen yeah the primer stuff is tricky
Well another day another update, I finished another 5 assault marines and got to work on the last 5 and the apothecary. I didn't get much done as I went to see rouge one and it took up a large portion of my painting time. I also went in with sandpaper and sanded down the stubborn areas that have been flaking primer so hopefully that remedies the situation.
Well not a whole lot done today just getting the metals and reds down on the assault marines + apothecary. I also almost finished up their bases, and I should have them all done by tomorrow. After that I come to a dilemma, I can either get started on the next 10 man marauder squad or I can do something fun and start part of the cataphratchii terminator squad since whichever one I pick will most likely be the last thing I paint before I head back to college. So what do you all think, slog through the last bit of the foot soldiers or do something new before I leave. Granted the next time I will be able to paint might be a month or more away.
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote: I'd do the cataphractii, Finish the break with a bang! Besides, fun units are fun.
Good idea, I will be doing that
Well I planned on getting these guys done today, but life got in the way. But they are mostly done, just need to seal and matte the transfers on the assault marines and paint the rims of the bases. And for the apothecary I need to finish the sword and the vials on his hip.
Not a whole lot done today got distracted by little chores that needed to be done before I leave back to college. But I did get some paint down on the terminators and my local gw was selling individual realms of battle sector imperialis boards for armies on parade last year and they still had two left. So I picked on up as a future display board for my blackshields.
evildrcheese wrote:Nice catch. Perfect for a display board, looking forward to seeing what you do with it.
EDC
Yeah I got lucky, there were only two left . But I should start working on it this summer hopefully!
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:I've always rather liked the sector imperialis boards, and it goes quite well with your armies bases!
I like them as well, but they are hell to roll dice on so I can see why people wouldn't like them.
Well as promised my last unit I am working on before I leave is the cataphractii terminator squad (or at least the plastic 5 as I have another 5 resin ones from a few years back ). They are mostly done, just needing the layering and edge highlighting plus transfers of course. So they should be done by saturday at the lastest and after that you probably won't see me too often on this thread until spring and summer break
Paradigm wrote:Nice work, you've put a real dent in that pile of plastic/resin in an amazingly short space of time!
Thanks man! I think instead of posting my collages of the completed models from this week I might just do a winter break overview of what I have done.
brushcommando wrote:Looking good. Those colors go great on the CTDA suits.
Black and red always are an awesome color choice, but that off brass color adds nicely as well
angelofvengeance wrote:Termies are coming along nicely buddy nice job!
Many thanks! The are honestly some of my favorite models in the entire army.
Well my last hobby night for a bit and I have mostly completed the 5 plastic terminators, all that is left is to seal and matte and paint the rims of the bases. When I get back next time I think I will complete the next 10 marauders then move onto the last 5 terminators which will be interesting as they are resin so the models are a bit different and I armed them weird (see reaper autocannon with a lightning claw )
Well the terminators are all done, but I felt that a winter break in review was due. So, this winter break I was sick for one week and was not able to prime anything for another. So that means in threeish weeks I was able to complete 10 assault marines, 10 marauders, 5 terminators, 2 apothecaries, 1 primus medicae and 1 landspeeder. I also built and base coated a knight castigator, venerator, two laser vindicators, a rhino and a land raider, along with building most of the models above along with 6 out rider bikes. My next major painting holiday comes during spring break where I will have a week off of school, I plan on finishing the last 10 marauders and start working on the vehicles or maybe bikes along with them. Anyways here is a group shot of what was finished
angelofvengeance wrote:Too hard on yourself buddy. I can't even get that much painting done when I'm healthy lol.
Thanks man! I was more miffed at that I had two weeks less to paint than I thought
evildrcheese wrote:That's a decent haul of finished models if you ask me!
Great looking group shot too.
EDC
I always love group shots as it shows off what you have done instead of putting them away in the case
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:That's far more than what I got done over the break, well done! I look forward to your return in the spring!
Same here man! I will still be in the p and m threads but not posting in my own
Well here are some better group shots of the last 11 models I finished before break was over. I really like the jump pack and the apothecary and I love the way the terminators came together, for some reason I really like the head on the one bare head dude, maybe because it reminds me of the primus medicae
Well, it's good to hear you'll still be out and about on the forum, DD is good for the soul! And I do agree, I like the older mark of JP much more than the current one, probably the fans that got me.

Yeah and it's the bulky less efficient look it has that makes me like it
WarbossDakka wrote:Great edge highlights on the Terminators, the force is certainly shaping up nicely!
Thanks man! I am super excited to get it all finally finished as I feel it will be a sharp army on the table
angelofvengeance wrote:Great stuff, though I think the eye lenses need some attention. Maybe put some Ceramite White and a glaze of Lamenters Yellow in there.
I painted them my normal green, it is just hard because of the way the heads are and the neck armor raises up it is a tough spot to paint/see
angelofvengeance wrote: Ah right. Looks like I've got that to look forward to with my Cataphractii then lol.
Yeah I would almost suggest doing to lenses first otherwise you will hit the paint on the rest of the head. Also painting it separately from the rest of the body
Well spring break is finally here so that means it is time for some hobbying. This time around I got back home kinda late, so I was only able to start building the first guardian squad. But there is a painting competition coming up and I do want to enter in a custode contemptor that I have coming soon so that may take up a lot of my hobbying time this week. I was also able to wash the Xiphon for my Ashen Claws so I expect to build that fairly soon as well, hopefully the weather clears up so I can get some priming in
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote: Lucky boy, gettin' spring break so early! Looks like some fun stuff ahead, I can't wait to see those Custodes!
I am lucky, though I wish it was next week so I could go to adepticon for the entire time . Hopefully the weather breaks soon so I can at least prime these guys
Automatically Appended Next Post: Well I didn't get a whole lot in today, but I was able to build 6 sentinels for my custodes ( I will leave the shields off to better paint the main body) and the Xiphon which was a nice kit and not nearly as frustrating as the fire raptor. Plus it gave me a lot of space to do one of my favorite things and that is to create a base! Which is what I did out of bits of sprue, vanguard veteran bases and some plaster for rubble.
Up next I will build a squad of Hetaerons, and to distinguish them from other guardian squads I will give them capes (which once again I will leave off). For them I plan on painting the cape purple and I have the custodes event model coming in that I am going to convert into a Valdor model so the Hetaerons will get the walrus mustache head
WarbossDakka wrote: I love that FW kit. The Custodes are looking pretty sweet too!
It is a pretty nice kit and it was not too greasy which was a pleasant change from that abomination that was the castigator kit
Well today was a slow day as I had to show my sister around my old community college campus and my new found binge show on netflix (West wing for those who are curious). But I was able to build a squad of Hetaeron custodes, so to differentiate them from the rest of the custodes they will be getting capes and I will be arming them will guardian spears (hopefully the paragon blades were a type and paragon spears were meant for them) and shields. So, so far I have 12 custodes built with 6 of them being sentinels, 3 guardians and 3 hetaerons. I have 13 more custodes to build and I do not know what to make them into next, I am thinking another 3 guardians for sure and after that maybe another 3 hetaeron and the odd one out will be made into a tribune as my Valdor model will be converted out of the event only custode model. I do like the look of the heavy bolter custodes but I have no idea when they will be available for purchase and they are not the best on the table.
Paradigm wrote: Looking forward to seeing your take on these guys. Are you going to be doing any Sisters of Silence to go along with them?
I got 10 of them, I may make some of them but I can't see myself using them
Well today I got a surprise when a package having my Galatus showed up, and thankfully the day was fairly warm so I was able to prime the base along with building the model itself. I tried to go for a victorious pose, but I may have messed it up so it looks like he is saluting the sky . I plan on making the bases a black marble using a tutorial I found on BoLS of all places, and I will be using water effects in the appropriate areas much like this base. I also plan on making the shield and the right shoulder pad a metallic red so they are blue taced on.
Got some priming painting and washing done today on the dread. I put a bit more work into the shoulder pad and shield as they will get the clear paint tomorrrow for the metallic red, I hope to have this guy done by 25th for the painting competition.
Guardians Eternal wrote:Great Clean looking gold on that custodes contemptor! looks awesome
I did like the more dull gold that forgeworld uses, instead of the yellow that you get from the GW gold progression chart. But I forgot to buy the forgeworld gold paint so oh well
VictorVonTzeentch wrote:Looking good man, I probably should have waited until after painting for the Shield as well. Oh well, maybe if I get a second.
I knew I was going to clear paint it so I left it off, but it doesn't get too much in the way so not really a problem more of an annoyance
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:That's some great gold! I'm excited to see your take on metallic red, as IDK how to make that color yet.
It is super simple, you just do the normal gw gold progression making the contrast between the golds really obvious as the red blends them together well. Heavily wash the edges with nuln oil and then do several light coats of clear paint from an airbrush.
Well the dread is mostly finished, well the body is but I am not 100 percent happy with the base as the black marble didn't quite turn out. I may just paint it a normal stone at this point and give it some moss to show a long abandoned area. Also if anyone ways I can provide more close ups of the shield and shoulder pad since they are a nice metallic red color now.
Well another adepticon has come and gone and another year where I forgot to sign up for events (I was writing a paper and forgot ). But I did get to spend the saturday wandering the vendor hall playing a few games and talking to friends. I was able to get some nice stuff as well including the Custodes spear dreadnought, a custodes t shirt, the new custode bolter arms and a custode transfer sheet! I also did a kitbash of Valdor on friday using the event only custodes model and the plastic spear and mohawk head (I still think he has a mohawk from the old fluff pictures not the new shaved head). I will be using the bolter axe for one of the hetaeron models to show their eliteness and I gave the walrus mustache head to one of the hetaeron models as well.
I would not mind that t-shirt either, reckon you could get away with it as a band t-shirt. The Adepticon exclusive model looks really interesting, hopefully I'll see it at a few UK events.

The shirt is pretty damn cool and I am thinking I may hold off on valdor til the middle so I can get the technique for the cloaks and gold down before I give him a whirl

It is actually a WHW exclusive model, so any event or at WHW they will have it!

I may have to pick one up at the end of April. That would make sense, what sort of color do you have planed for the Cloak? I was thinking Purple for mine.

I was thinking purple as well to play up the bodyguard for an emperor theme, but in the one picture of Valdor where he has a mohawk it is red but I feel like with the leather and helmet plume that would be too much red

I was thinking of purple but I was watching Jan's twitch stream and he was doing a beautiful dark red and I asked him about it and he suggested that over purple so we will see (I have to get the scheme down first )
JustaerinAtTheWall wrote:Some cool loot, ustrello! Both equally ornate, I look forward to their painting, Valdor especially.
Same man, though like I said above he will probably be more towards the middle of the custodes so I can get the scheme down first
Well I am back from school for the summer so you all know what that means, an absolute flurry of painting and building. But I will be going to Germany for 3 weeks next week so you all won't see me too much til June. So as is customary for my return from school posts I will start it off with washing resin. This time around it is not a mountain as it has been in the past, but rather a grav tank for my custodes, along with the spear dread, and the upgrade kit for the shooty custodes. Along with a mournfang for my new deathrattle army! I hope to start building tomorrow and just finish building the rest of the custodes before I leave so then I can at least get them primed and based gold so I can get a game in with them.
Then the general plan will be to finish as much of the blackshields as I can, then build and prime the deathrattle army.
angelofvengeance wrote: Good lord, that's a lot of Custodes! Can't wait to see the grav tank and spear dread built.
Also, I think you meant Mourngul :-P
Enjoy your trip in Germany buddy
Yep it is! Not to mention the 25 plus dudes I got to do as well . And you are right it is the mourngul I was just kinda tired when I was writing the post last night
Alright so productive day, I was able to build the grav tank (which was a nice kit and needed less fiddling around with than I expected), the mourngul and the spear dread. I had to change my original pose for the spear dread cause it was a bitch to do plus I like this pose a bit better with the futility of a marine trying to fight a custodes dread and him just calmly gunning the marine down and moving on. Also I was able to magnetize the grav tank turret so it can still spin because it is too beautiful of a kit to glue it down. The mourngul was not that bad for such an old kit beyond the gaps that come with the older models. Up next is probably building more custodes since I leave for germany in 6 days then painting for 2 months solid
Though as I think about it I may go in and saw the gun arm off of the dread and glue it back on so it points a bit more down towards the marine. Tell me what you all think
angelofvengeance wrote: Feel the power of the Kragle! Hot damn that Custodes tank is awesome .
Krazy glue has been the best superglue I have every used actually . But yeah the tank is huge it dwarfs the knight base, and the grav carrier is even bigger
My last night's work before I head to Germany. Putting some transfers down on the custodes dread (they are amazing by the way) and working on the last 3 terminators for my blackshields getting most of the base colors down and finishing the face on the Sgt, why I hated painting faces I will never know. So I will hopefully see you all on this thread in about a month or so and for the rest of the summer it will be a race to see if I can't finish the blackshields before school starts. And with that a hearty Auf Wiedersehen
