Well looks like the post office gods were on my side yesterday because my forgeworld order finally showed up! Everything looks good so far no bad casts or broken models. The corvus black air brush paint looks pretty good so far, kinda a warm black if that makes any sense, and it looks like I can just use it as a brush on paint! So instead of putting off my least favorite part til later I washed all of the models last night and began assembling more.

I then got the 30 tactical marines torsos and heads glued on, I am going with almost all mk 6 heads in this army with an exception for models that have the heads already casted on the model.

Lastly I built the Master of Decent himself Alvarex Maun! I kit based him using the master of signals kit, a mowhawk 40k space marine head, and the BaC sgt arms.

So with that I have all of the special characters made, and am well on my way to the entire army being built. Sadly I do not think I will get much more done this week as I have to write papers on the Qing dynasty and Fathers and Sons by Turgenev that are all due in a 5 day period

I am a glutton for punishment . He is a mean looking model rulewise also, he creates a nice 18 inch no scatter bubble around him for deep striking units!

Speaking of batch assembling 30 marines, they are almost all done. I got the arms, backpacks, and shoulder pads all done and glued on last night. Plus I finished the sgts. by giving them their bolt pistols and ravens talons, and two of the marines vexillas. I only have to start putting on their extra CCW, and random bits to finish them up (I primed the guns separately so I can paint their chests). After that I will probably make the apothecaries and the rapier or contemptor.

Thanks man! I should be priming them this weekend and starting on the tactical marines shortly after.

Well despite my papers best efforts I was able to finish some stuff last night. Though it is only the apothecaries, they are some nice looking models. Sadly I couldn't do a head swap on them so they will be my only two non mk 6 heads in the entire army. I also was able to get all of the extra CCW weapons put on the tactical marines but I didn't feel that was picture worthy

Nothing says they have to be MKVI armor. I think the medics look great. I have a mix of MK II, III IV and VI. They look great. I did the same with my first 30 Marines, all have MK VI, then wanted variety.

You have an awesome start, cannot wait to see paint on them!

Oh I know its okay, I am just going for a post dropsite RG (makes sense that I have Maun and Nex right? ) But since they are apothecaries I think it'll be fine

Alright so a bit more progress today, I got the laser rapier all built up and I decided to try a new color scheme for my bases. I realized that the brown was a bit too dark and that since the marines will be black themselves that it wouldn't look as good. So instead of trying white I am going with a greyish type marble or maybe should I try for a completely different color like green marble? So tell me what you all think!

I vote blue or green marble. I think it will contrast well with you Raven Guard. I saw a light grayish marble tutorial on GW's YouTube channel. I think it's called Warhammer TV. It was really good.

That base does look good... radical idea time, try hitting it with a strong green wash/glaze, see if you can thus tint it and keep the excellent texture/pattern. If it works, that's what I'd recommend, as something tells me painting white marble then making it green would be easier than painting from a green base.

I had a feeling green marble would win

As for glazes I have the pre made waywatcher green, and I bought a Vallejo glaze medium so I can make any of the gw greens into glazes. Any colors you guys would think would work the best? Caliban waagh moot etc

Alright so I finally was able to prime some models yesterday and started to get some paint down on the first 5 legion tactical marines! I used the new forgeworld corvus black paint and I gotta say I like it a lot. It is brush on ready right out of the pot (though you would probably want to thin it a bit more for the airbrush) and it gives the models a nice warm black color to it! I also painted up a green marble or maybe jade type base to see what it would look like and I am still torn between the two maybe leaning a bit more towards the tradition marble since it offers more contrast. Then again the green would be interesting and make the army unique.

You're right, that is a really nice black. It really has some depth to it, unlike a lot of blacks. How far are you planning to take the highlights? And do you have any weathering or such planned for these minis? Sponged-on silver chips look great on black armour, and really add some texture to it.

The bases are both excellent from a technical perspective, whatever method you're using for each is definitely working out. I guess it comes down to how they look with a mini on them, so I wouldn't make a decision until you can stick a finished RG on each and compare.

You can kinda see the beginning of the highlights on the center guy, I plan on doing eshin grey for the normal highlights and then a 50/50 mix of eshin grey and dawnstone for the extreme highlights. As for the weathering that is a good idea and I think I will do some light armor chipping, followed by some very light weathering powder on their feet. As for the bases I am really torn , on one hand the traditional marble makes sense but the green seems cool.

It is a great color, and I will suggest it to anyone who wants to paint black from now on!

Yeah I am slightly leaning towards the green but I will talk to a few people at the store on saturday and see what the general consensus is (it is pretty evenly split at the moment). I would highly suggest the black if you are going to do dark angels for 30k (though I think you are doing nightlords right?).

Alright slow day today, I wont be painting as I have to finish Fathers and Sons by Turgenev . But my kromlech not bolt pistols showed up so I was able to finish up Kaedes Nex, I chose these pistols as they looked more bulky and strong like the pistols he has in the fluff. My plan is to make him fairly bloody and with a decent amounts of chipping to represent a moritat of his skill.

Both those marble bases are just stellar but, I prefer the natural stone myself. The green is really nice though. Loving the conversions and army thus far, you are really putting out a lot of work considering those papers and assignments.

Hey crazy guy, did you mean to send me more goodies than just the marine you painted me? That marine turned out so well, he is going to be a centerpiece for sure in my new army!

Yeah I've decided to go with the normal marble color just to give some lighter contrast to the raven guard which are dark models to begin with.

Speaking of raven guard I got around to building my contemptor dreadnought last night, and I gotta say the model is awesome. It has lots of little details and looks like it will be fun to paint, also dont get me started on how customizeable the poses are on this model, especially since the BaC dread looks like he has a steel rod for a spine he is standing so straight. I decided to go with a mid stride pose with a slight turn and bringing the kheres cannon to bare and getting ready to brace the left leg for shooting.

Also my spring break started early today (hurrah for professors going on conferences) so I plan on getting a lot of painting done in the next nine days.

Thanks man! The model is amazing and actually a good sculpt as I was not sure it would be good based on the pictures from the website

In other news the first 5 tactical legion marines are done! So I am 1/6th of the way done with all of them , up next are more legion tactical marines and the blood crow himself as it has been too cold to prime and that is all I have left. I decided to go with yellow eye lenses as it has a more avian feel to it and it is a departure from my usual red and green lenses.

I am finally getting used to the photoscape program and I feel like it is taking my photo skills up to a new level, I would highly suggest it to anyone that wants to try to make their pictures better!

It is actually an idea I swiped from the IA 8 book as I thought it helped give some character to the models besides the usual solid color bolter casings people had.

Well I know I was planning on finishing the blood crow today, but I was in such a paint groove last night I had to finish him. So without further ado here is the moritat prime himself Kaedes Nex

A dark figure among the kin who followed Corax from Deliverance, Kaedes is seen as an ill-omen by his brothers. On Kiavahr in his youth he was known as Blood Crow, an infamous murderer condemned to prison. There he remained, until Corax offered him a pardon if he fought alongside him. After enduring a painful transformation into a Space Marine, only through the favor shown to him by Corax was able to overcome the disdain of his fellow legionaries and rise through the ranks. In the grim shadow-wars fought by the Raven Guard, his murder-honed skills were employed with grim regularity.

Fluffwise alone this guy sounds like a BA, but I wasn't really drawn to him for some reason. That was until I did some test rolls with him for his BS 6 chain fire and ended up getting a 50 hit streak going that ended up with 13 rends and 13 normal wounds against T4 marines. After that I had to paint him up and will be trying to include him whenever I can, because who doesn't want an almost guaranteed HQ or elite unit kill turn one?

I decided to paint him up fluffy with lots of tallies for kills, and of course lots of blood to show his preference to CQC. I also took a plain bald marine head and was able to use the gw shaved head and stubble tutorial with the corvus black to give him a beard and hair much like his picture from the HH black books.

Well another update and another 5 tactical marines almost finished. All that is left is to finish up the line highlights (stage 1 and 2), get the decals down, weathering and the bolters. So I should have them done by tomorrow mid morning depending on how late work keeps me tonight. Next up after them is 3 more regular marines, the sargent, the vexilla guy and the apothecary.

As the title states I got the second batch of tactical marines done bringing my total to 10 for the army and 1/3rd of the way done with the tacticals. The pictures aren't the best (I really need to buy a camera instead of my phone) but they will done since they are just line guys and nothing special. Next up on the docket is painting 3 regular dudes, the vexilla and the sgt, after that I will paint the squads apothecary and then re start the process for the 2nd squad. Once those are all complete I will paint up the Alvarex Maun model I got sitting on my desk and move onto probably the contemptor and after that the deythan or dark furies.

It is always a nice feeling to get a squad of core infantry painted and out of the way, so well done. I think they look great, I especially appreciate the chore of highlighting all that Black power armour.

What is the symbol on the left shoulder pad? Whatever it is it looks cool.

Yeah it is nice seeing them all together nice and painted (I am setting all the models out right now in preparation for tomorrows games). But the shoulder pad transfer is actually the tactical line unit icon for the raven guard. If you look at Nex he has the special unit marking on his shoulder pad.

Well I got some more work in tonight and built the rhino for my mor deythan, I decided to add a real dozer blade to it instead of that flimsy looking one that FW has in their kit. With that all of the models for my july game have been built.

Well its been a slow weekend here for hobbying. I really didn't get much done yesterday as I was at my local GW (almost got first place losing by one vote with my ironstrider) all day testing out my legion some more. It fared pretty well against a adeptus mechanicus list that was using a formation and got some lucky sniper shots against my fire raptor. I honestly think besides anti armor I got the list down pretty well, so to remedy that I will be making a support squad with meltas. I also ordered the new forgeworld underslung las cannons for another heavy weapons squad and a leviathan siege dreadnought with a claw, melta cannon, and storm cannon. I know the leviathan is pretty point intensive but it is a really cool model and I have always wanted one since they came out with it.

I also started work on sprucing up the fire raptor base with a space marine casualty. But I am at an impasse as to what paint him as, world eaters would work as it is a white model and will offer some contrast but a deathguard marine would be less of a stark of a white color. But do any of you have another suggestion for another traitor legion?

Well I hope everyone had a good Easter and a nice weekend. I actually got all of my homework done before sunday night so I actually got some painting in instead of rushing to write papers . So I started on the last 5 guys for the legion tactical squad. I am going by the fluff in the books so the Sgt. would have a white face plate and since he is a veteran he gets a white stripe going down the center of his helmet (I was thinking of red but I will be doing that with the apothecaries so I didn't want any confusion). I plan on getting these guys done before the end of the month so I can say I actually got an entire squad done in only two weeks instead of taking a month or more .

I am still debating on what traitor legion to use for any dead marines I got on my bases and I am adding the Sons of horus to the mix but I feel they might be a bit too dark of a color scheme for the base but on the other hand they will add some color to it. So tell me what you all think might work best!

How about using a dead Iron Warrior for the base of the raptor. You could do a gritty metal for the armor color, not as stark as a world eater, but also not super shiny silver either.

Alright I got some work in on my tactical marines last night (I didn't break out the light box for these guys so please don't mind the sub par pictures). I finished up the extra CCW, the transfers, line highlights and the lightning claws on the Sgt. Up next I gotta finish the base, weather the legs and paint the rims of the bases. I figure I will do a collage for these 5 then do one for the entire 15 man squad to show them all together in their glory . Up next will be the units apothecary and I will start all over again on the next tactical squad.

I like the idea of a Sons of Horus or Alpha Leggionaire on the base. The thing is with Raven Guard the "Allies In the Age of Darkness" has loyal legions as the least likely to ally with the RG, namely Salamanders and Space Wolves. Then follow Night Lords, World Eaters, Death Guard, Word Bearers and AL as distrusted Allies. Everybody else is treated as "fellow warriors".

Good work on the Tactical Squad, I especially like the sgts helmet and claw.

The alpha legion makes sense because they are the hated legion for the RG, but that metallic scheme would be a lot to pull off since I don't own an airbrush , so I am leaning towards the SoH, DG, or IW the first two my buddies play so it would be a fun little jab towards them thats for sure. I may just roll a D3 for it just because I am at an impasse

Well I did it guys and gals I finished a full 15 man squad in a little under two weeks time. I will be getting a more stylized collage picture up tomorrow and then do a little photoshoot of all 15 of them in all of their glory .

Really digging your raven guard, not something I usually say about the Men in Black as they always seem to come out flat.

Thanks man! I think I was a bit masochistic painting a black scheme army but thankfully I had a lot of practice and I am half way decent at it

Just did thanks!

Alright well I did it, I finished 15 legion tactical marines in less than two weeks and that is including a day or two here and there I took off as a break! I am really happy to have finished these guys and its nice to see one large unit all done. Up next (painting as I am typing) is the apothecary for this squad and then re starting the process with the next legion tactical squad.

Well trying to keep with my new found speed (and the thought of finishing one squad and their attachments in two weeks) has led me to almost finish the apothecary. All that is left is weathering, some blood effects, the base and matting down the transfers. Which I should have all done by tonight.

One a secondary note, what do you all think of the brown I use for the base rims? I really can't leave them black as it just feels weird to me but I have gotten a few comments that the brown takes away from the model. So if you do think it needs to change what color would you suggest? Maybe a neutral grey like adepetus mechanicus standard?

All looking good!

I see no issue with the brown bases; I'm preferential to a black base rim myself, but I don't think the brown would detract. Against the white background, it might throw the focus off a bit as you've got black on white and then brown in the middle, but once they hit the tabletop it should all blend in nicely.

Yeah that was my line of thought, that it was the light box taking away from the models because they do look good on the table top

Brown looks fine to me too, especially given the models themselves are mainly black. The Apothecary looks as good as done to me.

Yeah that is a good point. Since I was on the fence about the rim color at first I think I am susceptible to people thinking it is wrong

Speaking of apothecaries though, I finished mine up last night and got some pictures today. Overall I am sorta happy with him, I am not the biggest fan of the sculpt so I think that plays into it and I didn't go into it with a solid plan and kinda just painted this guy on the fly.

Either way he is done now so next I will be working on..well bad news is that I only got two tactical marines primed and it will be nasty for the next few days so no priming for a bit. So the plan is to get those two done at least and then work on maybe some of the special units in the mean time. So what does everyone want to see done first, the mor deythan or the dark furies? I leave it up to you folks.

Oh were those the cloak scout guys they have? I feel like those are a pretty decent fit for counts as mor deythan.

Also I am inclined to do MD today after my game today. I was playing a 40k ultra player and he had a ten man terminator squad with chapter master and I was able to get the fatal strike off with 7 combi flamers and ended up killing the entire unit through rends (had around 15) and wounds (around 30)

Well another year and another Adepticon gone (for me at least), it was a good one this year. I met a lot of dakka people (ritides and solar lion at the mod cube tent) and even met miniwargamer jay when one of my buddies was playing a game against him. Sadly the bitz trading wasn't that fruitful for me as I missed out on buying the things I wanted (A knight warden for 100 dollars and nicely painted terrain) because I wanted to get dinner and come back to buy it later

But I did end up getting some cool stuff, namely ModCubes (which are an awesome little widget for objective markers, psykers, various effects that happen to troops vehicles what have you). I would highly suggest these to people as they look nice and they are easy to put together.

The best thing I got though was a aspire tc 908 compressor from badger for 60 dollars! Saving me nearly 140 dollars (to spend on an airbrush of course ) So hopefully soon I will get some practice in and start working on the vehicles I have.

Not a huge project completed, but I did finish the fire raptor base and decided to go with a foolish alpha legionary who is dying on the base. There also was a break in the snow and windstorms on sunday (of course when I am working) but I got home just in time to prime my unofficial painting competition model and three more tactical marines so I will have something to paint while I am waiting for the weather to get better.

That is a very nice basing element! And I Really like the concrete look on the base in general.

My one constructive criticism is with the way he is facing, it seems to really be asking for another element on the "left" of the base... not sure what this would be, but it would make it feel a bit more balanced (doesn't need to be symmetrical - but something else would help, I think).

It was fantastic meeting you at AdeptiCon, and wow your ModCube schemes look cool . Ruckdog also really liked Black/Yellow on the vehicle ones, I think that's genius! And complete score on that airbrush - I have a badger compressor as well (with a Grex airbrush) and think it's awesome! Way better than the Grex compressor my airbrush came with.

Looking forward to following your work here and it's great to put a face to a name

Yeah I can see that. Maybe a helmet or his bolter that went skidding across the floor when he was shot?

It's actually polished marble but it's hard to see in the light box . As for something else maybe a helmet or a his bolter that flew out of his hands when he was shot? It is a temple base so I am trying to think of something that would fit.

I am glad you like the mod cubes you guys did a great job on them and I will be using them Friday. As for the compressor I had no idea it was nearly 200 when I bought it and now I am glad I trusted badger. Doubly so because I bought the Patriot 105 and Ken gave me a coupon code for the site and it saved me nearly 90 dollars

Also it was good to meet you too man!

No, when thraxas suggested an paint AL color scheme I had to try. As for the casing I know red is cliche but a dark color wouldn't work and yellow...bleh

How about something like a font/fountain or altar on the other side of the base? It would balance it out size-wise better than something like a helmet or bolter, but still fit the temple/battlefield theme you have going on.

Thanks man! I will probably be shifting gears after the RG and finishing up my dark mechanicus which includes a knight. So lots of room for conversions there that I already have planned . As for the dusk raiders nah I am done with them, especially since I got the 30k RG, as for the DKoK..well yes and no. I am selling off the bulk of that army to finance the dark mechanicus but I will be keeping the cool models like the death riders and maybe a grenadier squad, CCS, PCS and a normal squad. But the rest is now chaos machine fodder

Well after the post adepticon downturn in productivity, I finally got some paint in on the RG. I started batch 4/6 for the tactical squads and they should be done by friday and I even started the jump pack chaplain for my dark fury squad.

Its been a busy weekend, but I was able to finally finish batch 4/6 for the tactical squads. Nothing special just the usual stuff, doing these guys have made me really want to go onto painting something much more fun but I promised myself that I would finish the two squads before I start to move onto the fun stuff for the army.

I may of also started my chaos knight for my dark mechanicus army I am almost done with the build I am just waiting on a few more chaos bits. I plan on doing lots of chaos free hand on this guy because I was a bit low on bits for him. But to make him more evil looking I ordered a fw knight head off of ebay, gave him a "chainfist" by combining the gauntlet and chainsword. I then chopped off the teeth and gave him a buzz saw because I thought it would be a lot more cool, I also added lots of gargoyle heads where the eagles would go along with some tentacles and "chain mail" coming out from underneath the shoulder pauldrons.

Well the last bits came in today so I was able to finish (for the most part) the build. I still gotta gap fill and potentially fill in the holes for the saw blades, what do you all think for that?

One of the coolest knight heads ever made IMO

Maybe fill in the holes for the saws? Idk personally, also I added hot glue to parts of the blades and will turn that into ichor

Gargoyles on the back in place of the eagle heads

Chain mail coming out from underneath the shoulder paldron

Battle damaged legs

Counts as an AdMech reclaimed Dracosan with pintle mounted twinlinked lascannon (or autocannon...haven't decided yet) and a hull mounted grav cannon. Could in a pinch be used to count as a Triarios Armoured Conveyer I guess

I like the tusk additions . Also nice how you have the two saw blades going in different directions and the fact that the directionality of them would drag whatever it's chopping towards the center instead of away from the blades. That means if it hits it's going to draw the target in for more damage instead of pushing them away and escaping the evisceration.

Can..can I say I did that on purpose and it wasn't a happy accident? It was just the way the blades were cut because the jigsaw I was using made them break odd, but thankfully they broke in a way that was perfect (see the forward blade and how it curves up with the chain fist.)

Alright so the promethium pipes came in and I was able to finish the base, the general idea will be that it is blown up and possibly will be spewing noxious material out of it (I say possibly because I want to rust it up and idk if it would still be spewing liquid ). But as for the marine I am at an impasse, since the base and model will be blue/green and red a lot of colors are taken off the board to paint the dead marine. I was thinking white scars since the model can pass as a white scar veteran, or a raven guard since white and black will help separate it from the base. What do you all think? Any better suggestions?

He obviously died while trying to hide behind the pipe, so he must be a rage guard as the white scars don't hide cause they ride too fast around things like cover.

You've already got experience painting Raven Guard, so that's a good choice. But equally if you fancy a change the white/gold /red of a white scar would pop quite well.

But to both of you I was thinking maybe imperial fists. I've never painted them before yellow would be a good contrast (plus he looks like a dead IF ) and yellow will weather well.

Well I decided to go with an imperial fist for the base and a simple metal scheme for the pipe, barring the skeletons, vents and aquilas. I also painted up the first shoulder pauldron for the knight,I did some binary free hand (bonus points if you figure out what it means) and a chaos star and then some transfers to fill in the blank spots.

He looks great on the base, maybe a little burning of the skull will make him look like he was caught in the pipeline explosion. Another reason to wear your helmet all the time, otherwise you wind up with a Michael Jackson moment.

That is a decent idea, I will probably try the black soot weathering powder I got laying around .

Well I got another shoulder pauldron finished last night so both of them are done. I also started work on his battle cannon arm, all that is left there is to finish layering the sotek green, highlighting the metals and blues and finally the wiring. After that I start on the actual body of the knight himself. Obviously this will be the most time consuming part (especially the metals and greens) but I think I may have it done by next weekend if I play my cards right.

Coming along nicely! Only thing that stands out is the edge highlight on the pauldron around the inset symbol, looks a little too stark compared to the rest. Might just be the lighting, though.

No I think it is that bright in person (I'll check when I get home from work). But should I just get rid of it or maybe tone down the color? Like a 50/50 mix of sotek and temple guard?

I reckon either go round with the base colour just to make the line a tad thinner, or stick a mid-tone wash over it to tie the two together. Either ought to make it look a bit more natural, Looking at the other pauldron, it's fine, so just compare the two and when you can get them both looking like the first one you're good to go!

Yeah comparing the two you are right it is a lot thicker. Something I can fix up with the layer paint pretty easy, thanks for pointing it out!

Well I started work on the main body of the knight and I got one of the most annoying steps done, base coating the metal hull. I also got the base coat down for the tusks, tomorrow I should be able to throw a wash on the body and tusks and plan on starting and hopefully finishing the metal trim and the carapace/leg armor.

A question for the forum, for the metal bits on his tusk should I paint them a normal metal color or that teal green I use for the armor?

Well I got some more work done on the main body of the knight, probably one of the most tedious parts at that too. Alright I got a bit more work in on the knight, the washes are all done, and the chain fist is all base coated up bar a few little pipes. I also decided to dry fit it together a bit just to see how it is coming along and it looks impressive, I am glad I chose this pose as it expresses a lot of character.

That is a really nice look to him color wise as well. The pose is also very striking. As for the barrel being skinny compared to the head at the end, have you thought more about that, or are you good with it now that it is painted up?

There isn't a whole lot I can do about the skull as I glued it on with testors . Though personally I don't think it is super jarring, but then again I've never seen a skull at the end of a gun before .

Well I got some more work in on the knight, I finally layered down the sotek green and ubshati bone on the tusks. I also finished the not gold gold pieces to help give the knight some contrast on his body with the gargoyles, the power lines running to the knight head and various power station thingies on the back and side. I plan on edge highlighting the brass today after work along with edge highlighting the sotek green and then possibly starting work on the tentacles and free hand plus transfers.

Just an Idea, but you could add some jewelers chain between the gun shield and the cannon mouth and then attach victory trophies from it. You could do marine helmets, a pendant of some sort or even a spare knight face plate a a memento of conquest.

That is a good idea, I do worry though that the super glue may frost and ruin the paint job and that is my only hesitation in trying something like that when everything is painted already.

Well it has been a while since my last update, I decided to take a bit of a break after rushing to finish that knight in 10 days . So in the mean time as I am waiting for a good day to prime I built up a tactical support squad with melta guns since I am needed more anti armor in my army. I also plan on getting a 5 man lascannon team made and making my leviathan siege dreadnought ready also (that thing is seriously a beast). I need to use magnets so I can switch out its arms and my first idea fell through when I found out the arms for the dread are glued in at the "elbows" and since I have no idea how to magnetize I am at an impasse. It is a similar elbow joint to a contemptor so if any of you all have any experience with that let me know!

The only thing I worry about is how fragile they are at 5 men, but I suppose I can always bump them up to ten at some point

I will for sure, I am thinking of getting 4mmx 2mm rare earth magnets as they were suggested by another leviathan builder and they have an almost 2 pound strength so that is more than enough for the arms.

Thanks man, gotta write a 10 page paper today but thankfully I went through my books last night and wrote down all the page numbers I will be using for references and made a rough outline so it shouldn't take *too* long.

As for the leviathan, I think since I am magentizing the arms I may as well order the other two weapons so I have the full armory for it

Alright as the week and last normal week of the semester has winded down I found myself with some time to work on my leviathan dread. It was an interesting kit to make much like the contemptor where you have lots of freedom to pose the model. I went with the classic forgeworld pose of walking slowly forward. Also since secret weapon miniatures does not make 80mm bases yet for the line I use I had to make my own base using greenstuff and a greenstuff roller from greenstuff world. But I was able to magnetize all of the weapons and hull mounted options (which is a first for me and I think it turned out great).

It is! I've been trying around with how I will be using it and I will probably be getting a dreadnought drop pod for him. Especially since it's an assault vehicle, you don't have to open up the doors when it lands and it gains shrouded for the first turn. As for the melta lance it is awesome, heavy 3 but only with a 19 inch range.

4 melta gun shots and then a siege drill for some anti armor goodness

So it turns out that veteran dakka member Kronk actually lives only about an hour and a half away from me, so we decided to meet up and throw down some HH goodness. It was a 2k game with my ravens against his IF templars. It was a great game with some tough fought battles. Not much actually died (I think I only had 3 wiped out units a contemptor a rhino and laser rapier and kronk just lost a rhino)

My army

Kronk's army

Post infiltration table set up

templar bretheran failing a 4 inch charge (I can't laugh too much my dark furies failed a 7 inch charge a turn later)

They made it in this time

Sgt fight, can you guess who won?

Dark furies finally make it in, only to be shot up and only kill two templars

My mor deythan got tar pitted by that mortis dread the entire game, and the fire raptor did not live up to its points

It was a really fun game and its nice to play against fluffy lists instead of min maxed 40k lists

So it finally happened, after being crushed by the launch of AoS I lost all interest in the warhammer fantasy side of things. I just missed the mass ranks of skeletons and zombies really, but with the new ironjawz models and the fact that a new gw system will be coming out including points it got me interested again. So I decided to pick up a megaboss, some brutes, and a battletome to start my army.

Now the general theme of the army will be the skybasha clan with very dark iron armor and they will be based much like the dead marsh from LotR. So lots of knee and ankle deep water with armor bits and dead bodies near the surface. Here are some pictures I will be using to help me along with the basing

As for the army itself I have already built the megaboss and the first 5 brutes with dual choppas and a gore choppa

I plan on picking up one more unit this wednesday so I can start playing some small games (I won't be painting these guys until I am done with my 30k raven guard or dark mechanicus so I should be starting late summer and picking up when I come home from college). So far I am torn between the gore gruntas and a unit of 'ardboys. I am thinking the 'ardboys because it will give me more bodies and the models are pretty cool.

Yeah, I recommend the 'Ardboyz, small units are far more useable in AoS than WFB but you still need some beefy units to occupy space, take and dish out a load of hits and free up your elite stuff to crack the heads they want to be cracking, rather than the sacrifices your opponent throws them.

Seeing your inspiration, and taking into account the fact that AoS really does allow you to mix and match armies, how about.... Undead Orcs? It would be a totally unique army, there's some great scope for conversion, and in terms of gameplay it gives you a lot of options. In one game that's a shaman and some Ard Boys, in the next it's a counts-as Necromancer pulling up some orky Grave Guard ect. That, and Maw Krusha+Zombie Dragon= Totally Fething Awesome conversion potential!

Yeah that is what my thought was, plus upon reading the rules for the ardboyz they got some good stuff. As for the undead orks it is a good idea, I just don't know if I want to do it since my last army already was a undead one. But it is a good idea and I will keep it in my back pocket in case I get the gumption to try it

It is a pretty sweet weapon rule wise too, 4 to hit 3 to wound 3 attacks and it does d3 wounds per to wound hit. As for the megaboss he is about the size if not a tiny bit bigger than a box dread

Yeah for the arms I glued in the shoulder joints and then the elbow joint. After that the "wrist" joint stays with the weapons and I use 4x2mm neo magnets to hold them together as they have around 2 pounds of pull force (also please forgive my nails its a bad habit from waterpolo I have yet to break)

Then for the accessory weapons I used 1/16" x 1/32" magnets. For the nipple guns just one works fine and for the phosporex launcher I used two.

I love the suggestion of the Undead Theme...perhaps you should do their armor in a bone color instead?

Maybe paint up a squad of 'ardboyz since everyone likes the idea a lot. Especially since 'ardboys aren't part of the clan per se.

Well finals are finally over and with the I enter the summer for the first time in a bit where I do not need to take a class over the summer. So I will be dedicating more time to actually completing an army or two . First up on the docket is finishing my 30k raven guard and after that finishing up my 1500 points of dark mechanicus. After that if I have time I will start on my Armies on parade board for the dark mechanicus and get some paint on my ironjawz.

And speaking of ironjawz I just completed 15 'ardboyz (with drum and banner of course) and a warchanter. The 'ardboyz are not that fun to put together and it is easy to tell because the sprue was made in 2006, it really makes your appreciate how far GW has come in actually designing these models.

Yeah and how difficult they were to rank up

Well I did it guys and girls. I finally finished this semester up and the grades are starting to roll in (so far 3 out of 4 classes with 3 As). Because of finals I haven't got much done besides some build and tonight I built some gore gruntas! I decided on these guys after playing my first AoS game at my local gw today (it was a good game I got foot of gork off twice almost killing a fyreslayer and almost destroying half of a beserker squad) but it made me realize I needed some speed in the army and these guys do just that. I still haven't really mould lined them yet and I still haven't made their bases but the general build is complete

The weirdnob is great! His spells are pretty solid and if he is near a lot of models he casts easier so to get a casting value 10 if he is near 20 orruk models he would only need an 8 to get the spell off.

Hey all hope everyone had a good weekend! I ended up graduating on friday and got straight As for my last semester, so this coming fall I will be going to another university (so my production will drop off quite a bit). In the mean time I didn't get a whole lot done today but in preparation for my dark mechanicus war convocation being used for the first time this thursday I have to kick everything into high gear and complete building all of the models. Today I got the ruststalkers built, sadly they do not lend themselves well to chaos converting but I figure some free hand will make them more chaosy. Up next will be the rangers vanguards and kataphrons!

First off, congratulations on the graduation and As!

As for the Ruststalkers, I can't wait to see them, I'd say the easiest way to Chaos them up is to make all the metals all grimy and cover then in the remains of the Imperial victims they've just disembowelled, ie a healthy splattering of Blood For The Blood God!

Alright so after a marathon of building I got one ranger squad (with two sniper rifles), one vanguard squad (with two plasma culverns and one arc rifle) and one infiltrator squad (stubber pistols) built plus partially two kataphron squads. This was all in preparation for my first game with the dark mechanicus war convocation. I gotta say it was tough, the formation is pretty but I will always let my opponent know that I am running it and give them the chance to back out no worries. But flipping between three codexes and remembering all of the different cantacles and bonuses can be quite a jumble. I will probably try and do something about that and print cards to review at a flash and what not.

Tomorrow I plan on priming my leviathan and using my airbrush for the first time tomorrow to get the base coat down and prime some white on the shoulders and stripes going up the chest armor.

I ended up playing a buddies harlequins list (I told him before hand and gave him a few days to prepare or back out) and I ended up winning via points and his entire army was out in the open and would be wiped out the next turn

Nasty elves!

Well I got off track again (big surprise ) and I completed the leviathan siege dreadnought sans the volkite nipple guns and the melta lance but those should be easy to complete. It was a nice model and it gave me a chance to try out my airbrush for the first time and I gotta say why have I put off using one for so long? It made the white super smooth on the left shoulder and carapace piece. I can't wait to use it on the rhino and fireraptor soon!

It took around an hour to build and then another 30ish minutes to magnetize everything. As for the airbrush I am using the badger patriot 105, it seems like a good one so far. Though through reading there isn't an adjustable nozzle so if you want to airbrush a small area you have to get up close to do that.

Thanks man the leviathan is probably my favorite model in the army so far (but then again my favorite is always changing ). As for the line troops yeah they are a grind since they are all black and without much distinction besides some leather and white.

Tacs are all coming along nicely, the finished ones are splendid.

I reckon the MD's cloaks are ripe for some camouflage effects, though I'm not sure what type would work best with the basing/scheme.

Yeah that is the problem I was thinking of. The specific color for the cape and the pattern. Stripes are out because of the base pattern (maybe tiger stripes? But that seems kinda rouge trader ish to me) digital would be tough, mottled maybe. I could just do a solid color with highlights obviously also

How about a slightly shiny, smooth, high-contrast look, as if they're active camo cloaks that haven't taken on a texture yet. You could even experiment with a part-cloaking effect, the texture from the base starting to creep up the cloak.

The part cloaking effect sounds interesting. Paint about 1/3 to 1/2 as the base scheme and then with a blue line waving up (probably kantor as a base then teclis and then a baharoth blue with a fine white highlight) and red for the normal cloak color.

Thanks guild! I finally finished myself and it feels good to be done with them. Thankfully my army isn't too tactical heavy so I really only had to do 30 before I moved onto some sweet special units.

Speaking of which I did in fact complete the last 5 tactical marines tonight, and will be working on the apothecary and maun tomorrow hopefully finishing them before the weekend starts. But in the mean time I made a test scheme for the more deythan cloaks. After my talk with para I decided to go with a mid transition for the cloak so it would keep it unique for the masters of stealth (literally the mor deythan could go invisible like corax). But I wanted to get everyone's opinion on it since I don't want to mess up nice models like these.

Glad you like the skin! As I have said previously it always feels weird when you get RG with ruddy or peach colored skin so I try and make it more fluff like. Plus is helps give some contrast to the model(s).

Well as promised I have almost finished the apothecary. All that is left is to finish up the vials, the last step for highlights, and a few other details but I should be done early afternoon or late morning depending on when I get up and get back from the gym. Otherwise enjoy!

What about something like Flecktarn, but in shades of grey? (Because Raven Guard)

That would work, my only qualm would be the fact that a grey would blend into the base a bit too much (and I really am liking the transition effect). But I will be doing a small squad of IG for my AoP board waiting to ambush my dark mechancis so I think a red cloak in that scheme would be cool.

As promised though I have finished the apothecary and he came out..well a lot more bloody than his counterpart

Alright I started work on my kitbashed Maun model today, he is made out of a master of signals body and vox caster, a 40k marine mohawk head (maun has a mowhawk in the fluff) and a BaC powersword and bolt pistol combo. I should have him finished up tomorrow just in time to watch the bastardbowl on GoT

I think I have seen that one before, isn't it a tutorial on warhammerTV?

Well as promised I have finished Maun (and well before the bastardbowl on game of thrones). He was a fun kitbash, but I am kinda sad that FW hasn't made a model for him because I think they could do a lot better than I would modeling wise. Up next is 5 mor deythan and I was able to find 10 old school legion combi flamers (the ones without the hands molded into the gun) so they will have actual 30k guns instead of 40k combi weapons

Awesome stuff! Great model and paintjob.

Just a couple op tips on the pics, as I know that's something you're working on. Don't take this as criticism, just trying to help you show off the models the best you can.
- Don't crop in some much on all the pics. The odd close zoom is good for showing off cool details, but I reckon you want at least a front and back shot with a fair bit of space around the model so we can get a good look at the whole composition.

- Maybe don't use the jagged border on the individual pics, it's eating into the aforementioned space that 'frames' the model. It's cool on the outer border, but a bit much on the internal borders.

- Have you considered using a different/darker background? Not sure what it is, but a couple of your recent pics are a bit washed out, which might be to do with the background.

Hope that's of some help!

Heretic tom linked his lex page, but basically he was second in command to corax on the way down to the battlefield and he saved him during the drop site massacre.

Well as promised I did a lot more work on the mor deythan (after much hemming and hawing). I took some advice and added a small white line to the camo cloak transition line and I believe that it worked out really well. Also for the shoulder paldrons instead of making them white I decided to go with a very dark iron look (basically leadbelcher with two coats of agrax, and a coat of drakenhof followed by a edge highlight of leadbelcher and for the studs ironbreaker). All that is left is to finish up the edge highlights for the armor, and some other small bits and bobs. Thankfully I found some guy on ebay selling 10 of the old school legion combi flamers that would actually fit the mor deythan so they dont have to use my kitbashed ones made from 40k parts .

Well as promised I have finished the first 5 mor deythan, I decided not to do transfers on them to keep with the fluff since they were so stealthy. I also think I did a better job with the pictures this time around so tell me what you all think!

Here is some fluff on the mor deythan so you can see how stealthy they were/are

Spoiler:
The Mor Deythan, known informally as the "Shadow Masters", were a small elite cadre of infiltration squads within the Raven Guard Legion during the era of the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy in the late 30th and early 31st Millennia. In a Legion already well known for its nigh unsurpassed skill in infiltration tactics, the Mor Deythan were, however, far more than specialists in the arts of stealth, for each warrior was a veteran of the Lycaen Uprising who had fought at the side of their Primarch Corvus Corax himself. These elite Legionaries were rumored to have inherited a modicum of the unique trait of their genetic father that allowed them to "Shadow-Walk", enabling them to deny their presence to anything with a mind, making them effectively invisible.

Well today was kinda fail, I was able to base coat my contemptor and rhino with my airbrush. But when I went to do the white stripe this happened (my airbrush does not have a variable spray nozzle)

I will be re priming it tomorrow and then re base coating it. After that I will make a few bits white that can be hand painted, like the metal band in front of the exhaust stacks and a few other things. I also plan on making the front window areas that dark iron to also help break it up. Sadly this puts a damper on my plans for my fire raptor. But I instead will tape off part of its wing and make the outermost parts white instead of doing stripes.

Well after the failure that was the rhino and me not having time to fix it til tuesday I decided to work on and finish the contemptor. Right now I am working on getting down the metals to turn them into that dark iron and the beginnings of the whites. The only part I am pausing on is how to paint the kheres assault cannon as I dont want to do the entire thing in silver and black.

The contemptor is going to make one hell of a center piece for your already imposing army. The assault cannon color might be tricky, maybe just weather it/wash it enough that it has a different tonal quality than your silvers. It's hard to picture it as anything other than a sort of "steel".

If you're feeling fancy, you could try a heat-distressed look on the cannon barrels. Silver or brass fading through blue>purple>black or similar.

Besides the leviathan and fire raptor it is for sure one of the center pieces.

Thanks for the advice I put it into practice today and I think it worked out well.

Speaking of which another day and another update. I have almost finished the contemptor with just the gloss and matting of the transfers plus weathering/powder to put down before the beast is done. I am debating a XIX transfer on the empty space on the left part of the torso but idk I feel like it might make it too busy what do you all think?

Well I actually completed the model a day or two ago but I have just gotten around to taking its pictures now. In the mean time I have airbrushed the base coat onto the rhino (after fixing it) dark furies and rapier, I only have about 17 more days to go to finish the army including those above and a fire raptor. I believe I got enough time but it is getting down to the wire.

I did actually. I left the secondary lamp on full brightness and the phone on 0 for exposure and then messed around with the auto level with photoscape.

Well I think I am beginning to fix the mistake that was this rhino. I have gotten all of the washes down along with the whites and muted metal on the driver plates (I am considering leaving it as is as the brown showing through some of the darker areas looks cool). All that is left is to highlight do some weathering and get the transfers down.

As I said above I have almost finished the rhino, most of it was spent waiting for the microset/sol to dry before I could seal the transfers in and matte them down. All I got left to do it weather it and thats it, so while I was waiting for it to dry I started painting the rapier and crew and built some terrain. All in all a good day.

Not seen I have also scraped and sanded the aquillas off of the dreadnought drop pod doors because this is 30k and no aquilas for anyone besides the EC.

Rhino is looking great.

Isn't it only a certain type of Aquila used exclusively by the EC?

After all the FW jetbikes have aquilas on the front of them(?)...

EDC

From what I've read, the Aquila (double headed) is restricted to the EC, the Imperial Eagle (single headed) is more widely used, the lightning bolt/eagle links back to the Unification Wars, or at least to Terran Marines... I think, I might be a bit off on that last one.

Excited to see those arms painted up. I love the Leviathan model I just could never justify buying it just for a model I wouldn't use.

Rhino came out great, the added wearing is superb.

Yes the new one used by the imperium, but the dropod had the one only the EC were allowed to use.

You are correct, it was also given out during the GC to marines etc that caught the emperor's eye doing something super badass

He has 40k rules actually but they are a bit odd

Well as I said I have finished the rhino, it wasn't anything super fancy so I stuck with only four pictures. I also have completed building the dreadnought drop pod and man it is huge, I plan on at least getting the basecoat down tonight with the airbrush. I also plan on finishing the last two leviathan guns and working some more on the rapier.

It came out fantastic! I love the little touches, the weathering and such and also that you had the self control not to over do it.

Do you have a comparison shot of the dreadnought drop pod with like a regular one maybe? I've never seen it so curious

I thought about it, but besides the dozer blade there was not much to add where it could of gotten scraped by walls etc. Though I still kinda wanted to weather it more

Thanks jan! I actually got the idea from my local GW manager and it has served me well so far

Thankfully it doesn't have as much to paint as the normal drop pods so even though its bigger it'll be easier to paint .

Well I have completed the leviathan arms (grav bombard and siege drill) minus sealing and matting one transfer. I have almost finished the rapier with only sealing matting and a bit of weathering to go. Up next should be the dark furies and starting to gap fill and fix the fire raptor.

You got a FW dreadnought drop pod for your Leviathan? Well played sir, well played. Oh, and the doser blade works perfectly on the rhino.

The coolest model needed to coolest ride and thanks! I was happy that the blade worked out myself because there was no taking it off of the model at this point

Well as promised I have finished the rapier and finally took pictures of it. Up next is the dark furies which I am painting up as I am writing this.

Looking quite well weathered! The heat on the quad-laser also appeals to me, keep it up compadre!

Thanks man! I didnt want to go super heavy on the weathering for some reason on this guy but I like it all the same

I actually got the idea from para when he gave some advice on how to weather the kheres assault cannon.

Rhinos and other low AV targets beware!

Well as promised I have started the dark furies (only 10 of them and the fire raptor to go and only 12 days left crunch time) and they are about half done. I expect they will be done by wednesday at the latest because I will be gone most of tomorrow and today so I don't expect much painting to be done .

Rapier turned out excellent and the Dark Furies are such beautiful models, excited to see them done.

They are one of my favorites, the only think that I don't like is how fragile the claws are.

Well it was a good 4th so that means I did not get a whole lot of painting done. But I almost finished the first 5 dark furies and with 9 more days til I leave I have 5 more furies left and one fire raptor (that I still have to gap fill, sand, prime and paint )

Am loving the Leviathan and Furies, such cool designs. Good luck hitting your target, the prep alone for the Fire Raptor would intimidate me. Onwards Ustrello!

Who doesn't love some 4 attack rending master crafted I5 S5 lightning claws? But thanks for the encouragement the grind is starting to get to me lol

The leviathan is hands down my favorite model in the army, and after playing a game with it it is my favorite rules wise too. But the prep is what has been holding me off on starting it for so long but I have to start it by friday at the latest so I can give the green stuff a day to dry then I can sand it and start on painting.

Well as promised here are the first 5 dark furies, nice models both sculpt and rule wise. But the lightning claws are fragile so I glossed them and then matted them down to protect them, so hopefully they don't get chipped or worn.
