Well looks like the post office gods were on my side yesterday because my forgeworld order finally showed up! Everything looks good so far no bad casts or broken models. The corvus black air brush paint looks pretty good so far, kinda a warm black if that makes any sense, and it looks like I can just use it as a brush on paint! So instead of putting off my least favorite part til later I washed all of the models last night and began assembling more.

I then got the 30 tactical marines torsos and heads glued on, I am going with almost all mk 6 heads in this army with an exception for models that have the heads already casted on the model.

Lastly I built the Master of Decent himself Alvarex Maun! I kit based him using the master of signals kit, a mowhawk 40k space marine head, and the BaC sgt arms.

So with that I have all of the special characters made, and am well on my way to the entire army being built. Sadly I do not think I will get much more done this week as I have to write papers on the Qing dynasty and Fathers and Sons by Turgenev that are all due in a 5 day period

I am a glutton for punishment . He is a mean looking model rulewise also, he creates a nice 18 inch no scatter bubble around him for deep striking units!

Speaking of batch assembling 30 marines, they are almost all done. I got the arms, backpacks, and shoulder pads all done and glued on last night. Plus I finished the sgts. by giving them their bolt pistols and ravens talons, and two of the marines vexillas. I only have to start putting on their extra CCW, and random bits to finish them up (I primed the guns separately so I can paint their chests). After that I will probably make the apothecaries and the rapier or contemptor.

Thanks man! I should be priming them this weekend and starting on the tactical marines shortly after.

Well despite my papers best efforts I was able to finish some stuff last night. Though it is only the apothecaries, they are some nice looking models. Sadly I couldn't do a head swap on them so they will be my only two non mk 6 heads in the entire army. I also was able to get all of the extra CCW weapons put on the tactical marines but I didn't feel that was picture worthy

Nothing says they have to be MKVI armor. I think the medics look great. I have a mix of MK II, III IV and VI. They look great. I did the same with my first 30 Marines, all have MK VI, then wanted variety.

You have an awesome start, cannot wait to see paint on them!

Oh I know its okay, I am just going for a post dropsite RG (makes sense that I have Maun and Nex right? ) But since they are apothecaries I think it'll be fine

Alright so a bit more progress today, I got the laser rapier all built up and I decided to try a new color scheme for my bases. I realized that the brown was a bit too dark and that since the marines will be black themselves that it wouldn't look as good. So instead of trying white I am going with a greyish type marble or maybe should I try for a completely different color like green marble? So tell me what you all think!

I vote blue or green marble. I think it will contrast well with you Raven Guard. I saw a light grayish marble tutorial on GW's YouTube channel. I think it's called Warhammer TV. It was really good.

That base does look good... radical idea time, try hitting it with a strong green wash/glaze, see if you can thus tint it and keep the excellent texture/pattern. If it works, that's what I'd recommend, as something tells me painting white marble then making it green would be easier than painting from a green base.

I had a feeling green marble would win

As for glazes I have the pre made waywatcher green, and I bought a Vallejo glaze medium so I can make any of the gw greens into glazes. Any colors you guys would think would work the best? Caliban waagh moot etc

Alright so I finally was able to prime some models yesterday and started to get some paint down on the first 5 legion tactical marines! I used the new forgeworld corvus black paint and I gotta say I like it a lot. It is brush on ready right out of the pot (though you would probably want to thin it a bit more for the airbrush) and it gives the models a nice warm black color to it! I also painted up a green marble or maybe jade type base to see what it would look like and I am still torn between the two maybe leaning a bit more towards the tradition marble since it offers more contrast. Then again the green would be interesting and make the army unique.

You're right, that is a really nice black. It really has some depth to it, unlike a lot of blacks. How far are you planning to take the highlights? And do you have any weathering or such planned for these minis? Sponged-on silver chips look great on black armour, and really add some texture to it.

The bases are both excellent from a technical perspective, whatever method you're using for each is definitely working out. I guess it comes down to how they look with a mini on them, so I wouldn't make a decision until you can stick a finished RG on each and compare.

You can kinda see the beginning of the highlights on the center guy, I plan on doing eshin grey for the normal highlights and then a 50/50 mix of eshin grey and dawnstone for the extreme highlights. As for the weathering that is a good idea and I think I will do some light armor chipping, followed by some very light weathering powder on their feet. As for the bases I am really torn , on one hand the traditional marble makes sense but the green seems cool.

Yeah I am slightly leaning towards the green but I will talk to a few people at the store on saturday and see what the general consensus is (it is pretty evenly split at the moment). I would highly suggest the black if you are going to do dark angels for 30k (though I think you are doing nightlords right?).

Alright slow day today, I wont be painting as I have to finish Fathers and Sons by Turgenev . But my kromlech not bolt pistols showed up so I was able to finish up Kaedes Nex, I chose these pistols as they looked more bulky and strong like the pistols he has in the fluff. My plan is to make him fairly bloody and with a decent amounts of chipping to represent a moritat of his skill.

Both those marble bases are just stellar but, I prefer the natural stone myself. The green is really nice though. Loving the conversions and army thus far, you are really putting out a lot of work considering those papers and assignments.

Hey crazy guy, did you mean to send me more goodies than just the marine you painted me? That marine turned out so well, he is going to be a centerpiece for sure in my new army!

Yeah I've decided to go with the normal marble color just to give some lighter contrast to the raven guard which are dark models to begin with.

Speaking of raven guard I got around to building my contemptor dreadnought last night, and I gotta say the model is awesome. It has lots of little details and looks like it will be fun to paint, also dont get me started on how customizeable the poses are on this model, especially since the BaC dread looks like he has a steel rod for a spine he is standing so straight. I decided to go with a mid stride pose with a slight turn and bringing the kheres cannon to bare and getting ready to brace the left leg for shooting.

Also my spring break started early today (hurrah for professors going on conferences) so I plan on getting a lot of painting done in the next nine days.

Thanks man! The model is amazing and actually a good sculpt as I was not sure it would be good based on the pictures from the website

In other news the first 5 tactical legion marines are done! So I am 1/6th of the way done with all of them , up next are more legion tactical marines and the blood crow himself as it has been too cold to prime and that is all I have left. I decided to go with yellow eye lenses as it has a more avian feel to it and it is a departure from my usual red and green lenses.

I am finally getting used to the photoscape program and I feel like it is taking my photo skills up to a new level, I would highly suggest it to anyone that wants to try to make their pictures better!

It is actually an idea I swiped from the IA 8 book as I thought it helped give some character to the models besides the usual solid color bolter casings people had.

Well I know I was planning on finishing the blood crow today, but I was in such a paint groove last night I had to finish him. So without further ado here is the moritat prime himself Kaedes Nex

A dark figure among the kin who followed Corax from Deliverance, Kaedes is seen as an ill-omen by his brothers. On Kiavahr in his youth he was known as Blood Crow, an infamous murderer condemned to prison. There he remained, until Corax offered him a pardon if he fought alongside him. After enduring a painful transformation into a Space Marine, only through the favor shown to him by Corax was able to overcome the disdain of his fellow legionaries and rise through the ranks. In the grim shadow-wars fought by the Raven Guard, his murder-honed skills were employed with grim regularity.

Fluffwise alone this guy sounds like a BA, but I wasn't really drawn to him for some reason. That was until I did some test rolls with him for his BS 6 chain fire and ended up getting a 50 hit streak going that ended up with 13 rends and 13 normal wounds against T4 marines. After that I had to paint him up and will be trying to include him whenever I can, because who doesn't want an almost guaranteed HQ or elite unit kill turn one?

I decided to paint him up fluffy with lots of tallies for kills, and of course lots of blood to show his preference to CQC. I also took a plain bald marine head and was able to use the gw shaved head and stubble tutorial with the corvus black to give him a beard and hair much like his picture from the HH black books.
