In a good way.

Thanks DoctorDanny, and welcome to my plog. I will most definitely take that as a compliment

As promised I did lots of dry brushing on my BSF terrain tonight and got quite a few pieces complete. I haven’t taken nice pics, so for now you’ll have to put up with desk based photos. There’s quite a few, mostly boring pics;

Most of the stuff was single tile today, and I think the outcomes on average aren’t as good as my previous stuff. I think that’s good with the turquoise being a little off, not being as green as the tiles. I tried mixing in some Sibarite green which helped, but it wasn’t quite right. The pink glow on the 3 triangular pieces at the end were a bit half-arsed too. That said though, I think the stairs are some of the nicest bits I’ve done, I’m really pleased how they’ve come out.

That’s it for today, I might do some more tomorrow or Sunday. Thanks for looking!

Yeah the stairs look very impressive. All of the terrain meshes with the card really well. The terrain itself is very cool and alien and your painting really adds to that.

Great work Gobert!

Thanks Not Online, perhaps I am being harsh, you guys all seem to like em!
Guardling wrote:Very cool, they're blending in well with the cardstock

Thanks, some of them match really well and others are a bit off, but overall should enhance the playing experience I reckon.
Olthannon wrote:Yeah the stairs look very impressive. All of the terrain meshes with the card really well. The terrain itself is very cool and alien and your painting really adds to that.
Great work Gobert!

Thanks Olthannon, the different layers of triangles really help, and give it that alien tech feel I think.

Thanks for the comments guys, it really helps the motivation! So much so, that I did some more tonight and I think I’ve now got all of the cover terrain done! There’s still plenty left as there’s a boat load of corridors, doors, elevators, and icons still to come. Here’s tonight’s offering, apologies for the desk only photo, I think as too tired and the rims were still wet.

That puts me well ahead of finishing 1 model a day, and amazingly equals my finished model count for all of last year! Admittedly these are really simple things to paint and it won’t last once I get around to miniatures instead of terrain. Still I’m going to bask in glory for a few days

Thanks for looking!

Bored at lunch I decided to take advantage of working from home and picked up the painting sticks. I didn’t have time to do any more terrain, so I pushed some pigment on to the first combat squad of Assault Marines for my Void Panthers. Nothing exciting just yet;

I reckon I might skip Bargain Hunt a bit this week and get these guys moving instead

Thanks for looking

I'd say probably best to give the terrifying apparition known as David Dickinson a miss! Not sure what part of the warp he spawned in.

Good to see the Void Panthers getting some painting action!

Definitely enjoying the perks this week, need something to ease the stress midway through the day.

I say Void, you say Panthers! … Void …

I dunno where he spawned but if skin complexion is anything to go by Donald Trump and Dale Winton emerged from the same orange tear in reality!
Ezki wrote:Great work on the terrain!

Thanks Ezki, it was a fair bit of dry brushing for sure!
Warboss_Waaazag wrote:Ooo! I really like the BSF terrain. I've been thinking of doing something similar. All this is a huge inspiration. Looks great!

Yeah, do it Warboss! The TriHex Citadel stuff is really cool and paints up pretty easily. I need to arrange another game with my mate to test it out all painted up. Maybe I’ll try to finish the corridors this weekend

Another lunchtime painting session plus an evening painting saw this claw of Panthers, or would prowl or leap work better? Maybe Leap for assault squads, Prowl for tactical and Claw for Devastators? Hmm that was a different post to what I planned, but I like that, it might stick, we’ll see

Anyways, the Leap good headway today, I got all of the purple, black and Leadbelcher done then slapped some Nuln Oil over them.

I like how dirty they look at this stage, I might have to do a squad during the fall in this dingy state, maybe with some Plague Marine bits? Maybe highlight one up then do the Nuln wash to finish him?

Next I’ll get the jump packs to a similar state so that I’ll be ready for highlighting. I’m liking some of the jump packs I’ve seen online with glowing engines, usually in blue plasma style. Not sure whether to stick with blue or go for the green I use as a tertiary colour? Or maybe a nice hot red-orange-yellow-white instead? What do you lot think?

Cheers!

Assault marines are really coming along. I vote red-orange-yellow white. Molten metal and heat stress are really cool touches for miniatures.

Yeah, I’m feeling the paint sticks at the moment and getting bits done most days.
Orange 1 - Blue 0 - Green 0
youwashock wrote:Yeah, warm colors for the jets. It will be nice with the rest of the scheme.
Panthers!

Hehe! The naming conventions growing on me too
Orange 2 - Blue 0 - Green 0

I dodged the Dickinson again today and slapped some paint on the Jump Packs. They’ll stay being mostly black with touches of purple and gold. I might stick on Chapter symbols to some of them too, but not sure I can be bothered for this bunch, maybe the Sgt?

Looking at the pics it’s hard to see the purple panels. I tried the front panel in purple and thought it deviated too much from the black theme so went with the panel just ahead of the gap between the body intake and the drum of the engine. Together with the gold pipe work it matches quite well with the aesthetic that started with the bikers.

If I do some painting tomorrow evening I think I’ll get on with bringing the armour panels back to Retributor gold ready for highlighting.

Thanks for looking, and I’m still taking votes on the engine colours

Thanks Captain, there’ll be a slight detour to the 7th Blackstone Fortress before I get back to them.
Not Online!!! wrote:Snazy Assault marines indeed.

Thanks Not Online, wait til their all blinged up!

So I decided to crack on with the Blackstone Fortress terrain again, getting the doorways, lifts and a corridor finished;

Though I now realise that I did t include the corridor in the picture! Oh well here is the progress on the rest of the corridors;

Once I’ve done them, I’ll have done all of the terrain for the core set, so I guess I need to get a game booked in!

That also tipped me over 1000 images on dakka, so to celebrate I got my Blackstone Fortress collection out for a bit of fun;

UR-025 lays waste to the forces of Nurgle

Espern surveys the area beyond the lift

Pious Vorne summons the strength of the Emperor to fight the forces of Chaos

Taddeus & Amallyn confront the Cultists of the Abyss

Janus confronts Mallex
Setting this up though reminded me that many of the tiles are 2 sided, so a good third of the terrain isn’t out, and the board is crowded even without the Ambull, Guardian Drones, Zoat and the Escalation explorers… so I resisted the urge to buy more minis and bought another set of game boards. Later on though, Mrs gobert expressed an interest in a Bill & Ted board game so I bought that and it’s expansion, which will give me about 15-20 minis to paint up! Still, with all of this BSF terrain I’m well ahead of my purchases for the year so I’m feeling good so far!

Thanks for looking and keeping me going to 1000 pics!

Lot of great stuff happening! Love the next squad of marines getting their paint, but the BSF terrain still kills it. I actually liked playing on the normal tiles, but I will sigh a bit the next time we play a round (whenever that may be) and envy you your collection - but in a good way
And great action shots to round out the 1.000th upload to the gallery!

monkeytroll wrote:Everything looking good, some great shots of it all 'in action'

Thanks monkeytroll, the action shots were fun, but I really should get a better backdrop for them. That might have to wait until I build storage for the other minis and I can build a whole diorama storage solution for BSF… might take a while though!
Gwyn chan 'r Gwyll wrote:All put together, that is absolutely stunning! The way it was always meant to look.

Thanks Gwyn, I’m well chuffed how well it all fits together

And tonight I’ve stayed up WAY too late finishing the corridors and rearranging my display cabinet to show more of the BSF stuff off. No pics of the latter, but here’s the former;

Which brings me to the end of the BSF terrain for now. At some point I will get the terrain for the expansions. After that I might rehash some of the tiles to create wall sections as a backdrop for the diorama that I eventually want to make.

Void Panther service will resume next week.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks ShadowsAndDust, it’s been great fun and I think I’ll be buying the stl’s for the expansions soon (the dice tower is really cool too!).

Today I got a bit of painting done over lunch and then a bit more after some work this evening. I managed to get all of the gold back to Retributor armour done on all 5, leaving them here;

I’ll get on with the highlights on the good next

I also remembered to take a pic of my Blackstone Fortress collection in its new resting spot;

I think it looks pretty cool. It’s still pretty busy on the boards so I’ll expand to 3 or 4 shelves when I sort out a new display area.

Still more bling to come, I’ve only blocked in with Retributor armour so far. The BSF stuff is only about 6 or so colours in the main but they mix together well.
Not Online!!! wrote:I really need that gold recipe
Good job on them!

Thanks Not Online, the gold is a GW recipe; Retributor Armour, Nuln Oil, tidy up raised areas with another layer of Retributor (where I’m currently at), next will be a volumetric highlight of Liberator Gold, then another of Stormhost Silver

Today I decided to have a day off as Mrs gobert went to the big smoke, so I was on school run duty and it’s been a busy week at work and I needed to decompress. So I spent most of the school day painting! I tidied up the black areas, then I got out the purple and reapplied that to the shoulder pads and helmets. Most of the time though was spent edge highlighting the backpack and the weapons, also with the purple.

I’ll tidy up the black next before I finish off the Gold and Steel bits before highlighting the black and purple bits. Then green will come out to play before I finish off details like parchments and the bases.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Maharg, I’m glad you like the new terminology and the BSF stuff. I’ll try to remember to get a few photos in of the game.

More progress tonight, I highlighted up all of the purple and black on the marines. Those jump packs are a bit of a slog but I powered through. I should’ve gone to bed at that point but decided to power through and do the gold and silver highlights

I don’t think it came out quite as well in the photo, but I think this might be the best gold I’ve painted yet. I turned off one of my lamps and positioned the other where I wanted the light source on the mini to be coming from. The reflection on the Retributor then gave a great guide where to place the Liberator and Stormhost highlights, really boosting the reflectivity (is that a word!?!). I’ll break out the greens next, and will try to remember to get my last batch of tacticals out too as I missed some cables on them. Then it’ll be details before I go for a glow on the engines and finish up with the bases. Doubtful I’ll finish them before the end of the month but they should be done early Feb with any luck

Thanks for looking

Killatores wrote:Those jump marines are getting done quick!

Yeah, for me they’re going very fast! It must be the lunchtime painting I’m getting in. As for inspiration, I had originally considered copying ListenToMeWarriors’ Celestial Lions particularly after he did the Space Marine Heroes Series 1 guys. That quickly became a custom chapter that was linked to my BSF Chaos Marines. Their 2 schemes; Gold/Purple and Black/Gold are a bit Emperors Children and Sons of Horus (1st Company). I crowdsourced ideas for Chapter icons, with Theophony & Don Qui Hotep (not seen him on dakka for a while, say hello Don if you’re lurking!) setting me on the Panther theme and brushcommando putting forward Void Panthers for the chapter name. Quite a bit later I decided the Black vehicles and 1st company are because they’re mourning their Chapter Master after he was overtaken by a disease of Nurgle. That then led to a cult and eventually their fall.

Thanks Steve, the BSF stuff has very much been a labour of love.
youwashock wrote:Really coming together, now. Gotta love that shine.

Yep, they’re so Shiney! (Singing the song from Moana in my head)

Lunchtime painting got the greens basecoated and washed with old Ork Flesh wash. I also remembered to get out some old Panthers to do their green bits too. I then spotted their helmet pipe work wasn’t painted, so they got the Leadbelcher and Nuln like treatment. Here’s the Prowl of tactical marines;

Spot the newly painted bits…

Yes, I got them off the display shelf to paint their armpit cables!

After doing a bit of work this evening I made great headway on the Leap too. All of their green bits were finished, i neatened up the shoulder pad edges, got some Zandri on the parchments and even did the bases.

As you can see even decided to stick their jump packs on

There’s not much left to do; wash the parchment, paint the base rims black, figure out what to add to their bases so they don’t look ridiculously dull! I think some more colour is needed and maybe the dirt needs to be lighter to better match the Prowl? Dunno, any ideas?

Thanks for looking

The void panthers are looking good!
Maybe try adding rust or verdigris to the metal of the bases for that extra colour that you're after?
To be honest I think a drab non-metalic base would better to contrast the shiny armour

They look absolutely awesome Gobert.

As for the bases, you could try a red/brown wash to the metal to better contrast the marines?

Maybe a different drybrush colour to the dirt like on your other lads.

Nice work gobert!

Agree with the others: a good wash, maybe even thinned down, might give that needed contrast between the base and the marines.

Much respect for the pit cables. I think bringing the bases between Leap and Prowl closer in appearance is a good idea. It was nice to revisit the genesis of the chapter, too.

Thanks Guardling, I think you’re right in drab contrasting the shiny, but the first Panthers were from the Space Marine Heroes box with really cool bases so I’ve tried to continue the theme using the Sector Imperialis bases. I have repainted them and I think they’re a bit better now, let me know what you think

I’ve tried to recreate by drybrushing like on the old, not quite managed a match but not far off now I think. As a few have suggested I might have to throw in some rust colours too

Another vote for the wash, I might have to go back now!

Thanks youwashock, I too enjoyed looking back at where the Panthers came from, glad I wasn’t the only one!
Not Online!!! wrote:Nice, armpit cables are annoying, often one forgets them... for no reason at all and only realises later that one has missed them

Yeah, they’re very much pointless and tucked out of the way, glad I got them anyway!
Viterbi wrote:Leap nearly done and they look amazing with their jump packs on. And good to see you go back to older minis to paint missing stuff. I tend to ignore my mistakes

Thanks Viterbi, the jump packs make them look much darker and more sinister, quite fitting I suppose given their fate! As for mistakes I struggle to ignore them, unless it means completely redoing some thing, the odd touch up is harmless though!

You might not be able to tell from the pic but I did some painting tonight;

Admittedly the painting was mostly lightening up the bases, which are now much closer to the previous squads. I did also paint the parchment, badly as usual! Then I made a start in the jump pack engines, starting with Khorne Red, Evil Sunz Red and a bit of Fire dragon bright.

I started one Marine with some Yriel yellow but the Fire Dragon wasn’t dry so it mixed a bit

I think it’s got a decent glow and will look better when I add some white to the centre. It is a bit sloppy in places so I might try to do some darker edge highlights to better separate some of the elements. I’ll hopefully finishe them at my next painting session.

Thanks for looking !

Cheers youwashock, hopefully you like the finished engines, which I think makes these guys done

Today was my non-working Friday (hurray for 9-day fortnights!) so post chores I snook in a bit of hobby time. After a bit of work on the Blackstone Fortress play area organiser , sticking off cuts of felt into some of the recesses (helping my wife to reduce her fabric pile of shame too!), I picked up the paint sticks. I finished up the Yriel yellow, applying a wash to the central recesses aiming to leave a bit of fire dragon still showing;

I then mixed some white and Yriel yellow and applied that only to the base of the engine outlets. I then dotted some pure white in the middle of the main outlet. I tried to better define some of the edges by going back in with Evil Sunz Scarlet. To finish off I tidied up the external surface by painting a layer of Leadbelcher on it.

That’s them pretty much finished, just a few bits to touch up mainly where I was sloppy with the engines… which was most of the work I did on them! I’m also thinking the jump packs are a bit dull looking. Do you guys think I should add some freehand Assault markings or maybe a small chapter symbol?

Tomorrow night, COVID permitting, I’m hoping to play some Blackstone Fortress with some friend. I’ll try to get some pics of the board and the play area organiser. I’m also midway through printing a dice tower which we’ll use too.

Thanks for looking, and I’ll try to get some decent pics if I finish tidying up the Leap.

That's the stuff. Looks quite good. Props for taking the care to stick to just the openings and leaving the metal areas defined. I don't think the packs need more. The minis are already a treat to look at. The black makes a nice counter to the gold.

That bright dot in the middle makes all the difference, exhausts look great! And would also leave the jump packs as is. Maybe look at the minis after two weeks and if you still have the urge to add to them, then you should do it.

Thanks Olthannon, I’m liking them.

So it seems that the internet has spoken, so I’m calling them done. That is the way.

I did about 5 mins to fixing mistakes on them and grabbed a few bits to take some photos, apologies that it wasn’t with my camera

Further apologies for cropping bits of the beakie marine from some of the pics! whilst putting them on their shelf I took some in situ pics;

This time Beakie is front and centre, so it worked out in the end I think

I couldn’t resist some pics of the others either;

Thanks for looking and the ideas along the way with these guys

Thanks Olthannon, the Army shots were great fun and I love how they look on the board (I really should get that painted soon!

So last night a couple of mates came round and we made a little expedition to the Blackstone Fortress. Here’s the pre-game setup;

It was a continuation of the game I played with one of the two back in October (might even have been September, COVID times are so hard to measure!). Amallyn and Taddeus returned, the latter not being quite as awesome, but sweeping up loads of the archeotech. Pious was deadly as usual, getting 2 inspiration points and killing loads. Espern came along as our new joiner decided to pick the one you think sounds the worst because they usually turn out the best… he was kind of right as the force field he produces saved Amallyn from some Chaos Space Marines. In the end we survived 3 combats and got quite a few Archeotech bits and a Clue. Here’s a pic from the first combat

With a new player it took a little while to get going but once we got in to the swing of it we advanced pretty quickly. The eagle eyed might have spotted the big printed warp gate, which is actually a dice tower. That helped quite a bit with the D8 which always seemed to roll badly. I’ve committed to painting that up before the next game.

Thanks for looking, now I’m off to nurse my hangover whilst the kids make a racket in the other room

Thanks Viterbi, it was really fun and all the holders were very practical. We said we would do it again, but who knows when!

It’s been a busy week or so at work and home so I haven’t managed much hobby time. During a few quiet meetings I did manage a little bit of prep work on the Blackstone Fortress Dice Tower I printed and a new acquisition;

Mrs gobert expressed an interest in trying a board game out, and know how much she loves Bill & Ted I suggested I get a copy of Riff in Time. I’ve no idea if it’s any good,but thought it’d be worth a shot given how cheap it is. I also got the expansion so I can get the historical dudes and Rufus minis too. They look pretty decent casts and the mould lines weren’t too heinous. They’re primed grey right now and will be getting a zenithal of white. I’m not intending spending loads of time on them. They’ll mostly be getting Contrast and when my pre order arrives some Speed Paint too. Should be a fun little project!

I’ve also had a painting project going too, which I made good progress on tonight. Keen to finish my Blackstone Fortress collection I decided to work on Aradia Madellan the Psyker from Escalation. To my eye she had a bit of a GSC look about her so I picked this colour scheme;

(I like how her glove has wires over it’s surface I assume to help her powers?). I think the scheme looks ok so far. It’s my first attempt where orange has been a large part of a scheme, I think it’s highlighted up quite well. The white isn’t really white, it Ulthuan grey washed with a thinned Basilicanum grey and highlighted back to Ulthuan. The gold is Gehenna’s with an agrax wash and rehighlighted with Gehenna. The blue it the main thing left to do aside from the bases but I’ll leave that until I’ve finished the Rogue Trader (probably next) so I can do the Escalation adventurers bases all at once.

That’s it for now, thanks for looking!

Thanks Guardling, the orange and white is a sure fire sign she’s not on the side of the inquisition if you ask me. The new Bill and Ted is pretty decent, not on a par with the first two, but certainly worth the rental price

I think you’re on to something with the Baldie GSC thing (wasn’t there a WarCom thing on them shouting too?) and I can certainly see Matt Lucas in the cult!
Not Online!!! wrote:Great orange!

Thanks NotOnline, I’m happy how the orange came out, especially since it’s my first attempt at any sort of scale.

A short painting session this week has finished off the Cultist/Sanctioned Psyker. There wasn’t much left, just the blue and base, but I did decide to add another highlight on the gold.

Not my greatest work, but a decent quick paint job that adds to my tally and was more enjoyable than I thought when first looking at the mini.

I also managed a few colours on her Rogue Trader Mate

I’m quite looking forward to this one, her blade leg is super cool, as are the servo skull reloaders and pistols! I plan to heavily plagiarise Dirk Reinecke’s version, hopefully mine looks as cool!

I’ll try to stick to my plan of taking decent photos when minis are done, but Aradia isn’t on her final base yet. Once Neyam is done I’ll do their bases along with the other Escalation explorers. Then I’ll only have the Zoat and Guardian Drones to finish my BSF minis. Don’t worry though, I’ve bought the stls to print terrain for all of the expansions.

The Dice Tower got a coat of varnish on the not Blackstone Fortress bits to try and smooth out the warp and metal bits. It’ll get another coat of filler primer before I hit it with black, white and grey primers.

Thanks for looking!

No problem Dirk, your Rogue Traders are proper cool! The Blackstone terrain is really great, it adds loads to the immersion.

MIL is coming over for half term so it’s going to be minimal painting for the next week or so. I did get a little done tonight though and made some good progress on Neyam. All the metal work got it’s Leadbelcher and the gold; Retributor. A bit of Zandri on her bib, face and skulls. I then slapped on some Agrax;

Whilst waiting for the Agrax to dry I figured I’d get started with The Archivist.

I was kind of following the Midwinter minis guide but changed a couple of steps and was impatient with the thinned yellow. Anyway, it’s a bit too bright for my liking, so I’ll be starting again I think.

I am not sure how it is supposed to look at this point, or what the end look will be, but if you are willing to experiment to try to save it, you could try a wash of Druchii Violet with a little Agrax mixed in (maybe 2:1) to knock it back down. He’s toned down quite a bit now he’s dry but I’m still not happy. I’ve been looking at lizard colours and think even the caliban green is too green. Gotta admit I’m kinda tempted to go for an aligator skin effect. If I can pull it off it might be quite cool, but the patterns could make her too busy.

Cheers CB, I’ll try!

Well, I say I’ll try, but have made zero progress on my 2 active projects this week! in my defence work has been MENTAL I’ve been a bit ill and my MIL is over. Not that I’ve anything to complain about compared to current goings on at the Other-side of Europe. Crazy times!

I have however got a few things in motion; the warp gate dice tower has been filler primer, varnished, sanded, filler primer, sanded and now has its grey primer on. I might throw some black on the Blackstone Fortress bit and maybe some white on the warp bit too. As I want it to match the terrain and the warp to have a nice bright green to it.

Continuing the priming I chucked a zenithal prime over the Bill & Ted minis in anticipation of my Speed Paint set arriving, which it now has! Given some of the characters have different ethnicities I tried a few options for quick skin tones;

These guys won’t be jumping to the head of the queue just yet, but they were primed similar to the B&T minis and they have plenty of skin on show! They’re all standing in-front of the paint that did the leg work apart from the bone chap, he’s actually a mix with Fyreslayer as it didn’t look skin like! As you can see they all give a decent mix of skin tones that I can probably use to decent effect on the Bill and Ted stuff.

I’ve also been dreaming up how to create a Techmarine for my Void Panthers from the gunner in my Landraider. I’m thinking his helmet, torso and shoulder pads on a set of Devastator legs might look cool

Hope the skin tone comparison helps, there’ll be more painting next week i reckon. Thanks for looking

Nice Khornate male revue. The Speed Paints seem to do what they say. Beyond the added variety, do you think they offer much over Contrast?

Techmarine idea sounds good to me. Will he be traditionally red?

Yeah, they like to show off those angry boys! To be honest I’ve not much experience of either Contrast or Speed Paint. The little I have used them (My Necrons and the odd bit of flesh and bases for contrast. Tonight’s efforts for Speed Paint) it seems the Speed Paint flows off the brush better, allowing me well to work pretty fast at getting coverage. Despite flowing better, they seem to be thicker and give better coverage by being less blotchy. A highly technical review I know!
Olthannon wrote:Awesome stuff Gobert, I really like how those skin tones look, particularly 2nd left. The techmarine sounds cool as well, good luck with them!

Cheers Olthannon, Guilliman Flesh is pretty nice, the Speed Paint equivalent is slightly pinker. Techmarine will be red I think, though I’m not sure how I’ll get some good bling on him though.

MIL departed this morning, so I got the painting sticks out tonight. Keen to get the Bill & Ted game playable I cracked out the Speed and Contrast Paints. I’ve not really done anything special with them, just slapped them on. The closest to special was mixing different colours and thinning them with Comtrast Medium. Both seemed to work well. Bills Jeans and Mozarts Pantaloons also got a drop of white mixed in. That didn’t work quite so well, but a quick drying of the brush to wick away the thicker parts, then setting the brush to thin the whole lot down to faded Jean colour worked ok. Anyway, you’re near for pics, so here’s the state of my desk

It’s been pretty enjoyable slapping the Speed Paint on and making rapid progress. I reckon another night of painting and they’ll be good to go.

Thanks for looking

I’ll definitely take a few in action shots when we get to play the game. Sadly there’s no phone booth model just a card piece, but now you’ve planted the seed I might need to print one!
youwashock wrote:Rufus and Lincoln are worth the price of admission. Have fun!

Yeah, they’re cool minis. Joan is my favourite so far, but her colours are a bit bland.

I made a it more progress on them the other day, throwing down some brown and blue Speed paints. Here’s some slightly better pics;

They’re rapidly closing on the finish line, with a couple needing their pale grey wash on things that’ll be white, most needing some Black Templar on black bits. The a couple of them need some metallics to finish them off. If I can get them done over the next few nights and varnished, then I’m hoping Mrs gobert will be up for a game.

Thanks for looking

She definitely could

A good bit of painting tonight got the whole Bill & Ted gang painted up. They’re nothing special, just a quick job using Contrast and Speed Paint for the most part. Still, I’m pretty happy how they turned out;
Wyld Stallynns Rule!

Bill S Preston esq

Ted Theodore Logan

Joanna

Elizabeth

The princesses

The Preston’s

The Logan’s

Rufus

Rufus and Wyld Stallynns

So crates

Lincoln

Mr the Kid

Ms of Arc

Charlemagne

Napoleon

Babe Ruth

Freud

Genghis

Mozart

And that’s all of them! 15 minis in about a week is testament to Speed Paint (and Contrast). Admittedly they’re not finished to high standard, but they’re passable and I’m chuffed given how little time they’ve taken me! I had heard that applying normal paints over the top of Speed Paint will reactivate them, and i can confirm that to be true. It gave me a bit of hassle on Teds socks and where I got some on their bases. I could’ve sealed it with varnish before doing those bits, but speed was the priority so I just suffered it. That aside I’m definitely going to use them again. The bone and skin ones are great, so they’ll definitely be employed elsewhere!

Anyway, it’s late, so to finish off the post here’s the whole gang;

Thanks for looking!

Long time no see Don! I hope you enjoyed the catch up. Everyone’s gotta love a Keytar! The Blackstone Fortress journey still has a ways to go too

On Friday night Mrs gobert and I sat down and played Riff In Time over a few drinks. It took a while to get the mechanics figured out and to get in to the swing of what you’re supposed to do each turn. Even then there were a few details we didn’t figure out until about 3/4 of the way through the game. One of the mistakes we were doing made the game a bit easier so we beat the rifts and won the game, I forgot to take pics until we’d finished

It was pretty fun, and playing the soundtrack in the background helped with the immersion, as did the odd *air guitar. I’m sure we’ll play again, particularly as the cooperative nature of the game avoided any marital strife!

Yesterday was a painting day, youngest goberts bedroom got a fresh colour on the walls (2nd coat this morning ) and Neyam got finished.

I made her a bit brighter than Dirk Reinecke’s inspiration, as I think I started too bright. That said I like how her coat turned out, just Khorne Red with a wash of Agrax, then highlighted to Evil Sunz Scarlet through gradually adding it to the Khorne Red base.

That’s the Escalation minis finished, just the paint on the explorers to finish the set. Zoaty will be taking a backseat for a while as I’m away in Bonn with work next week and didn’t want to take her. Instead I’m bringing my stash of High Elves in the hope I can make some progress if we get some down time.

Thanks for looking

===edit===

Oh and I’ve also got the Blackstone Fortress warp gate dice tower ready for painting. The primer went on a bit thick in the warp bit and has cracked. Hopefully the paint fills the cracks

I know, right!? I think I’m ahead of even you in the year to date count . Though I made things easy for myself with all the BSF terrain early in the year.
Not Online!!! wrote:Question Gobert, are the Army painter speed paints decent?

Yeah, they’re really good, they flow from the brush much nicer than contrast paints and don’t seem to suffer from as much pooling or tide marks. Overall I’m most impressed at the finish for how simple the paint job was. I enjoyed them much more than I do Contrast, for both finish and application.

Reactivation is real, even with normal paints, though metallics didn’t seem to activate them so much. If you start with the lighter colours first and make your way to darker colours then it’s not really noticeable. The bases I got some Speed Paint on took several coats of grey to get looking decent. Even then the Speed Paint still seemed to be mixing with the grey. That’s the only downside which would take away some of the speed, having to varnish before adding traditional highlights. If you’re not doing those, then there’s not really anything to complain about.

Thanks mcmatilla, her cloak was pretty fun to paint. Riff in time was pretty good, and yes my missus seemed to enjoy herself, but she is a huge Bill & Ted fan so it was more likely to happen. And yes, it’s probably wise not to put your fingers near the warp gate!
youwashock wrote:Neyam looks good. I suppose I will have to make the decision to convert her or leave her stock before painting. Hard call. It is a very nice mini. Dice gate is another great piece.

If you do convert her, then do away with the gun that’s being reloaded as it broke off 3 or 4 times and 100% will if she is used in game.
Don Qui Hotep wrote:That dice tower is really cool! Great job on Neyam's cloak too, really smooth blending of highlights.

The whole TriHex Citadel stuff from Dragons Rest has been awesome, it’ll be keeping the Blackstone Fortress painting going for a while yet. Thanks for noticing The blending on Neyams cloak, I spent quite a while on that.
Viterbi wrote:Amazing turnaround on the Bill & Ted game and the colors look great and very vibrant! Rouge Trader turned also out excellent, great color choices.

Speed Paint has to take most of the turnaround credit for the Bill & Ted stuff, a new record for completely painting up a game for me! The colour choices weren’t my doing either ! that was plagiarised from
Dirk Reinecke’s plog

Thanks for all the comments guys, it helps keep me plugging away. This past week I’ve been in Germany with work and took some Elves with me to break the back of them, which I feel I have done, but there’s still a along way to go. Night 1 saw me paint the skin on the faces of the Spearmen and also paint their red boots, gloves and belts;

Day 2 saw me do the red on all of the Archers too, which was quite a slog!

Day 3 saw me start on the white areas, getting a base of Celestra Grey on the Spearmen and some of the Archers. This took quite a while as I needed to be neat (and I might’ve had a few beers with dinner )

The pics make it hard to see the details, so I’ll get some more when I unpack them and finish the Celestra Grey. It was good to make some progress on these guys, especially seeing as I started them early last year and Had aimed to finish them by now. I think I’ll divert to the dice tower now I’m home, but then switch back to these after that.

Thanks for looking!

Hehe! Thanks, I’d like to thank my mother and father… seriously though, I was pretty chuffed when they asked, especially for such a quick paint job.

Anyways, back to reality and I’ve been feeling pretty rough the back end of this week, so haven’t had much hobby time motivation. With the return of F1 this weekend I’m back to being banished to the loft to watch it. As usual I cracked on with some painting too, which as I saw the result beforehand meant it got more attention than the qualifying . Instead of plodding on with the Elves I got stuck in to the Warp Gate. I got the metallics down, Leadbelcher Air is nice! Then a bit of Retributor before moving on to Emerald Green for the cables, a mix of grey and Zandri for the skulls and stones. I finished off with a liberal dose of Agrax all over.

I’ll do some highlights on it all before I move on to the Blackstone base and it’s OSL dry brushing. I’ll save the warp gate itself until the end, going for a green flame like glow where the recesses will be white and the peaks a darker green.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers Jazzy, it was pretty cool. I’m also really looking forward to the warp energy, I nearly jumped ahead of my steps tonight, but backed down when I saw the time

I didn’t fix the missed cable tonight whilst watching the F1 and to the untrained eye it might look like I’ve done nothing… but my fellow dakkanauts are well trained so will spot; drybrushing on the metallics, plus a Sepia wash on bits of the gold, drybrush highlights on the rocks and skulls, blocking in the black for the floor/walls and tidying up the white of the warp gate.

I didn’t go any further as the Race was awesome, well done to Ross Brawn and co for a successful debut of the new rules packages! Another point on the painting though is that I’m really enjoying the brush that came with the Speed Paints I got, it loads up really well and keeps its point despite my abuse(so far at least!).

Thanks for looking

Thanks man, given the effort that went in the results were really good, and it was nice to get the shout out. Neyam really is a cool mini and I like how she turned out.

So the lurgey has gotten the better of me today and whilst hiding from our cleaner (so as not to infect her!) I did a little no brain necessary painting. I started with highlights on the green cables, then drybrushing the turquoise on the base, some pink lightning, then the green of the warp gate before a final dry brush of Green for the light coming off the warp gate

It was a pretty quick job in the end, and I’m pretty happy how it’s turned out. Perhaps I should’ve gone for a different colour than green for the warp effect but it’s kind of been one of the themes of my Blackstone Fortress stuff. Oddly enough the rear looks better to me, I think because there’s less white and more of the intermediate greens.

With that done I think I’ll return to the slog of the High Elves. Hopefully these guys will become my first ever completely painted Army!

Thanks for looking

Thanks, it’s a cool piece I think! As of Lurgey, I decided to Google it to confirm that my colloquial use was correct and now realise it has no e. So the lurgy is a non-descript illness, kind of like the flu and cold (and in modern times omicron). My current symptoms put me in mind of COVID but my test and my wife’s test were negative, so Lurgy it is!

Yeah, I got it because the D8 in Blackstone Fortress tends to roll badly, this helps loads for that when they bounce on the bottom of the warp bit and bounce out of the gate on to the Blackstone tiles.

Back on the lurgy theme kids often use it to tease or exclude other kids “don’t play with him, he’s got the lurgy”. I get the impression that cooties are used a bit like this too?

Thanks Olthannon, I’m glad you liked the lightning, it’s my favourite bit to paint. I might have to sneak it in to other minis somehow

Thanks Cap, I’m looking forward to giving it some use, though I should probably varnish it first!

I decided to throw some paint around tonight and finished the Celestra grey on the Elves;

Boy was it a slog! It’s the worst step completed though now, and I can start to think about more fun stages.

Thanks Olthannon, it’s an ancient recipe from White Dwarf that I opted for back in the day after years of not settling on a paint scheme.

Thanks Don, the overlap of the dry brushes does look pretty cool. I wish I’d have done more on the front side, but it’s done now!
MegaDave wrote:Dice tower is awesome, glad to see more progress on the elves. Keep up the momentum!

Thanks MegaDave, the Elves seem to be flowing well at the moment, hopefully that will continue over the next few sessions

Another F1 weekend, so it should be another double painting session weekend too. Keeping on with the elves I finished off the blue pouches that I started mid week, before getting the hair base coated brown.

I think that’s now all of the base coats done other than the red details. Hopefully I’ll get that done tomorrow night, though the race should be an exciting one again so I might get distracted again!

Thanks for looking and all of the comments!

I’m trying, that’s for sure! As I often say on here; Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey (or painty High Elfy! )

Another entertaining and tense F1 race so progress wasn’t as fast as I’d been hoping. Though that could also have been that the trim around the chainmail is quite fiddly. As such I only managed to get it finished on the spearmen;

Whilst doing the trim I now also know that I missed a few sleeves on them . I’ll aim to catch those ahead of highlighting them in a few steps time.

Right, time for bed! Thanks for looking

Yeah, they’re slow going with a batch this size, but in reality I’ve probably spent about 10-30mins per model so far which ain’t too shabby! I love the pink lightning too, and with these bases and some really thinned paint it’s pretty easy to do

Taking a break from the Elves, i cobbled together a Techmarine idea I had;

Clearly he’s very much WIP, but I’m liking the direction he’s heading. The teleport bits will probably get mechadendrites or similar. One will have a hand flamer end to use up what’s in those tanks. I might cast a clamp from one of my old school techmarines too, or maybe just some pincer type hooks. Open to ideas if anyone has some

Thanks, I thought the Dev legs would work well with the techmarine aesthetic. I think the back pack will be the make or break for this
Olthannon wrote:Elves are looking spot on, as is the tech marine. I like the antennae on the backpack, that's a really cool look. Are you going to keep his oven mitt?

I should’ve kept his oven mitt, it’d have been easier than butchering and extending the hammer!

Well, I couldn’t resist the draw of fettling plastic this evening and made good headway with the Techmarine. His arms and body are pretty much done now;

I think he looks pretty good from this angle

But a bit derpy from this one. Some dendrites will hopefully help with that… I just need to figure out how I’m going to do it!

Edit: I’ve seen others use guitar string, but I think I might have some bike brake cable, I wonder if that might work?

Thanks for looking!

Depends on the cable's texture and willingness to keep it's shape, I would say. If cables don't work out, there's always servo-arms.

Yeah, the more I think about them, they tend to be pretty straight and rigid, so probably not the best solution. I am though thinking I could print a tube roller and make some from GS/milliput?
Maharg wrote:Wow, that's a lot of elves to paint in one go, good job so far. I'm not surprised you needed a break with that Techmarine. Good luck finding a dendrite solution. Don't let him distract you too long from the elves though!

Yep, it’s quite daunting to the point I’m not sure whether I’ve bitten off more than I can chew! As such I’m being distracted by more fun projects… Like carrying on the building bug, that I said I wouldn’t do this year!

So, yeah, I’ve not been painting elves like a good boy, instead I’ve been building Space Marines! I’m not really sure why I started with Tactical Marines, I should’ve sorted the Devastator squad really! I’m now though at the point where I’ve got a combat squad pretty much ready for some primer:

In my defence though, it’s not really eaten in to my hobby time as I’ve been doing them through meetings, lunch breaks and a couple of early finishes at work. I promise I’ll get back to the Elves over the weekend!

Thanks for looking

Olthannon wrote:The techmarine and the new tac marines are looking sweet. Don't worry, I end up swapping between different projects all the time stops me getting demotivated.

Yeah, it’s good to swap about, particularly on a project like these Elves… there’s a Zoat around here somewhere that needs more paint!

Quite a drudge of a painting session tonight, slapping more red on the various detailed bits;

20 archers have their red bits basecoated so I’m about 1/3 through this, the longest step. I’ve spotted a few that will need their white bits touching up before I do highlights on it. I might need to do something else after this step though, probably zoaty and some proper bases for the Escalation explorers.

Thanks for looking!

Back on the lurgy theme kids often use it to tease or exclude other kids “don’t play with him, he’s got the lurgy”. I get the impression that cooties are used a bit like this too?

Cooties are definitely used by kids to tease each other. But the word doesn't really extend into the realm of physical maladies. We wouldn't say that a nondescript illness was "the cooties." I guess you just have a more versatile colloquialism on that side of the pond.

Elves are looking good.
For my two cents, I think the techmarine with the hammer looks a little derpy because he's leaning ever so slightly away from the hammer. It's almost like his hammer and backpack are about to topple him over backward. If he were leaning slightly forward - by making a waist adjustment or a basing thing - or if he were hefting his hammer in the air - with a slight shoulder rotation - it might look more like he was ready to wield that mighty piece and just paused mid swing to crack off a round or two.

Can't wait to see them in the ol' Gold and Purple.

I always figured cooties was based on something like cold sores, as it was always something boys and girls would accuse each other of catching when they kissed in movies/tv shows. We do like our colloquialism’s over this side of the pond that’s for sure
I think you’re right on the techmarine, his backpack is especially going to off balance him. I think the tanks are too big, I might look to change that. As for the hammer I’m thinking that he’ll end up on a step with the end of the hammer slightly below his feet. I’m hoping that will address that bit and still keep the old school techmarine look.sadly I’m quite limited on right arms at the moment so without some serious butchery he’s going to stick with this pose for now. As of colours I’m not sure whether he (and the apothecary for that matter) will have gold armour. I quite fancy some deep red but highlighted in a similar way to the gold rather than edge highlights, we’ll see.

Another short painting session, this red takes about 5 mins per mini, so I laid it down on another 10 and calls it a night;

If I get the chance I might try to get this step finished in the week as we’re off to visit my brother on the weekend. Then its school holidays, so I might see if the kids wanna paint any mini guys whilst I’m on daddy day care.

Thanks for looking

They sure hit me in the nostalgias!

I did it, the red detailing is all basecoated!

5 mins per model again and the 40 archers and 12 Spearmen are all at the same state! It was quite a slog, so I’ll switch up to something else next before getting on with the next element. I’ve decided that Zoaty boy is next in line. I’ve been looking at oldhammer army shots and spotted a red Zoat which looked quite cool. Not sure I’m brave enough to give it a go, but I’m not feeling too inspired by the usual green right now.

Thinking of the steps that are left for the Elves, we have; black straps and spearheads basecoating, washes on; reds, skin, blue pouches and spearheads, black straps. Then highlights on skin, whites and spearheads. That’ll be the minis themselves done, but the bases need texture paint, basecoat black, 2 drybrush layers, tidy up of edges… so yeah, quite a bit to go!

Thanks for sticking with the slow plod of the red advancing!

ListenToMeWarriors wrote:Smashing through the work on those classic WHFB Elves. So many good memories of that big starter set, complete with cardboard cut out Grom The Paunch and Eltharion The Grim on Stormwing.

Oh yeah, those cardboard cut outs were fantastic. I was lucky enough to get Elthariom, but sadly never got Grom, I hate to think what he’d cost on eBay nowadays.

Tonight was another evening of watching F1 and painting mini guys. It seems I chose a good colour for the Zoat, though maybe he needs a bit more black for the full Chuck Lecluck colours;

So far it’s just Mephiston Red and Zandri Dust and I need to think what other colours to go for. Taking this guy as my inspiration I think I need to slip in some yellow and green, but black and turquoise might work well too. I’m picturing the bone coloured bits to be wraithbone like (maybe he knows youwashock’s zoat’s Eldar mates?) material, so maybe the gem shaped bits should be painted like wraithstones? I’m also unsure on the wash to use with the red; Agrax, Purple or Green. The original GW red Zoat looks to have a bit of a purple tone, so will probably go with that one. Let me know what you guys think might work

Thanks for looking!

For Dark eldar a sloppy down on their luck cabal look could actually work quite well?`And eldar are also just space elfs, same for Dark elfs come to think of it.

But yeah , high elves are probably not likely to be ragged or down on their luck so accuracy it is

Yeah, it could fit the cabal bill quite nicely but I’ll save the grim dark for my Plague Marines and go bright and cheerful for my elves!

No update at the moment, mainly as I’m still on holiday. I do however have some Amazon vouchers burning a miniatures shaped hole in my pocket. I don’t really need anything, but I’m torn between 2 options at the moment. I fancy a doom croissant, Immortals and praetorians for the Necrons in the shape of the combat patrol, but I am also kinda coming round to the idea of a Nurgle Knight (probably Desecrator). Which way do you reckon I should go?

Glad I gave you a chuckle, not sure where I first heard it, but I certainly can’t claim ownership of it! I did also order the Necrons, but I will also get a Knight Desecrator at some point.

Other than ordering minis, I did throw some pigment at the Elves tonight. Nothing exciting, just the black straps on the archers, then fixing bits I’d missed on about 15 of them

As I was packing up I spotted a couple of other bits that I’d missed so I’ll have to get those before I do the washes. That’s the joy of painting large batches I suppose!

One thing that struck me just now is that it might be fun to put together a stop motion of these guys being painted since they been in two piles since I started. I’ll have to scour the gallery now for images…

Thanks for looking!

Looking forward to seeing more paint on the zoat, looks like an effective, if unusual, colour choice

Yeah, I’m questioning my sanity that’s for sure! I’m looking at the Zoat and I’m not convinced right now, I’ll see it through though.
Olthannon wrote:Yeah great progress mate. I was "batch painting" my elves 5 at a time and even that took me weeks did you decide on bases colour?

5 would be a much more manageable number! I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel I feel. The bases will be a black/grey volcanic wasteland to match the rest of them.

I had a look and some of the pics are from different angles, I’ll see how it looks, but it might be a bit wierd on the stop motion! As for rules, they’ll be playing the sitting on the shelf really still game .
Ragsta wrote:The long grind of batch painting will be worth it! Check and check again, I’m always missing stuff too

Its quite a grind, but the progression is there… though I found a few more bits that I missed today!
youwashock wrote:A paint progression video sounds cool, gobert. A good wash and you'll really feel like the end is in sight.

I’ll give the video a go, maybe next time I should do a pic for every mini at every stage… might get a bit tiresome I suppose!

Well, another weekend, another F1 race, this time with Quali on Friday, sprint tomorrow and race on Sunday. This should mean 3 painting sessions and good progress on the Elves. Tonight I managed to wash all of their skin and just shy of half of the red bits.

Not the easiest to spot the difference, but it’s there! As I mentioned above, there were a few bits of white and red that I’d missed so they also got tidied up.

I’ll finish the wash on the red tomorrow, then the blue will come out and I think I’ll put some Nuln on their hair. The skin will be highlighted back to Elf Flesh and some of the red trim will get brightened up. The blue pouches will get a single highlight too, then it’ll be tidy up of the silver and white before finishing off with highlights for the whites. Oh and the spear tips will need some Leadbelcher at some point. I’ve got some black textured paint for the bases, then a couple of dry brushes of grey before painting the edges. By my reckoning that’s at least 8 sessions, probably more like 10. At 2 a week, it’ll be June before they’re done it might end up sooner if they come away on my work trip in a couple of weeks, we’ll see!

Thanks for looking, and heading with my long slow progress and rambling posts

Good to see the mighty elves progressing! Seeing how I'm demotivated by painting batches of 4 you should be proud that you stick to it all the time.

Interested in seeing the Zoat develop, it's a lovely mini and every time someone paints it, there are new colors coming forth.

It’s quite a slog, but a good task to do while watching something as it doesn’t require too much concentration. I’ll get back to the Zoat at some point, there’ll only be 2 BSF minis to paint after she’s done.

Last night wasn’t quite a productive with the Elves as I’d hoped, mainly as I had to do some work (boo!). Still I managed to get all of the washes on the red bits;

So that’s 2 more washes and the wash stage is done. I might get the washes done tonight depending on whether the F1 Race is as good as the Sprint was.

Thanks for sticking with this process!

So the main race wasn’t as interesting as the Sprint so all of the Elves got their hair washed in Nuln Oil and the blue bits got a Blue Wash too;

With that the wash stage is done. I’ll be back to regular paints next time, probably starting with the flesh.

Thanks for looking!

It must be one of those Age of Sigmar things, it even has a base without right angles!

It was also joined by a couple of Immortals tonight;

These guys are pretty fiddly to put together! All of the pipes and none push fit bits meant they too much longer than I was expecting… that and all the bits I took out of them so they looked a bit more undead like the Indomitus Necrons do. I did enjoy that process, the missing eye socket being my favourite bit. The Doom Croissant also had a few pieces taken out of it too.

Yeah, it’s quite an elven trait I suppose to carry on sternly! The breaks helped re-motivate
Olthannon wrote:

Fear naught, normal pointy helmet service shall resume shortly!

So this week I was away with work (back in Germany) and I had grand plans to get some good elven progress. Sadly the bier garten and restaurants kept me occupied until it was too late to do any painting so the elves didn’t even make it out of their travel box. However, since it was an F1 weekend they were unpacked last night and after some reunification with their bases I pushed some pigment around on them. Quali wasn’t massively exciting, but I was tired so I called it a day halfway through the first skin layer of dwarf flesh;

The race is on tonight, so I reckon I’ll get through the first layer at least, maybe even 2?

Thanks for looking!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Not the most interesting of F1 races (though the post-race Americanisms were a bit forced and very cringey, almost as cringe as Willy T Ribbs doing the interviews!), but on the plus side I got a good bit of Elven skin painted. All 52 got the dwarf flesh base tone

and 20 got the Elf Flesh highlights

It’s hard to see in the pics, but the highlight helps give them a more Elven complexion. Looking back at some pics of my previous archers they look a bit tanned, so I might have to touch them up with this recipe. That can wait until these guys are done. That said, it’s a struggle getting to the faces on the archers, so I can see why I was lazy. Even when I do get to their faces, most of them seem heavily deformed, either through poor mould line cleaning or teenage gobert paint jobs laying underneath! Only 20 more to go I suppose (plus the original 20 if I can be ed!

Thanks for sticking with me through this Looooong process!

3 posts in a row, but that’s the price of monotony I suppose

I got a cheeky bit of painting in today and got the skin finished on all of the Elves;

Look at all their little elven fingers! . I think the highlight helped get some definition in to even the most deformed faces too. I think I might do the blue bits next

I’m feeling motivated a bit more on these guys, probably because I’m on to the fun bits of painting details. Tonight all of the blue bits were highlighted back to (ancient) Enchanted Blue

Not that you can see any of it from that angle, so here’s another one;

See, there is some blue on them! That was quite a quick stage, only taking about 1min 25sec per model. It was nearly quicker, but then I spotted the pouch at the back of the archers . I might squeeze in a bit of painting during a break tomorrow and do some red highlights as they should be quick

Yep, definitely coming closer and bits are better than the earlier Elves I painted for sure.

Last night I did a bit more as it wasn’t too late when I finished a stage of decorating my eldest’s bedroom (still loads to do and a mountain of ikea furniture to build ). This stage was near invisible though as it was just tidying up the reds;

Mostly it was tidying the red on the arrow holsters (not sure of the proper word of this), shoulder trim on the archers and skirt trim on the back of the spearmen. I need to do another highlight on the hair of the spearmen command group at some point too.

As I was only part way through an episode on Netflix I started on the white robes too, getting a base layer of Celestra grey on the spearmen.

I wasn’t too neat so I need to tidy up some more red trim now! that notwithstanding I’m feeling really close to the end on these guys; finish Celestra on the archers, then highlight the robes with Ulthuan and the archers will be done. The spearmen will need their spear blades painting. I need to make a few shields too, paint them and of course they need basing.

We’re getting there!

Yep, it’s time consuming but the Elves need it!

And so the white is done, it was a slog again, but the Archers now only need the white highlights to be done!

If you’re particularly eagle eyed, you might also spot that I highlighted the hair on the spearmen command group too.

There’ll not be much to show tomorrow as we’re off out for a friends surprise birthday party, though unfortunately we’ll miss the surprise. Depending on the hangover, I’ll try to do some on Saturday.

Thanks BC, it’s quite a slog, but they’re coming along now, surely there won’t be too many more posts about them!? They won’t be getting goblin green bases though, they’ll have volcanic wasteland bases (black sand with grey highlights). I also have plans to do a slightly scenic base for them too, though by scenic, I mean a surface to match the bases! . Maybe I’ll throw a skull or 2 on there to break things up a little.

So the hangover was pretty horrible last weekend! Then it revealed itself to be a stinking cold which makes sense as it wasn’t even a heavy drinking session. . Despite the cold I ended up doing loads of wall painting instead of mini painting as the carpet fitters who normally take 2 weeks had a slot on Monday! Huzzah! I then took on building a mountain of flat pack furniture so my daughters can finally have their rooms to themselves again! As such progress has been next to non-existent, but I snook a quick bit of paint on to the spearmen, who now have highlighted white robes, which I’ll take pics of later this evening when I hopefully finish the Archers robes too. Wish me luck!

Yeah, it’s weird how post lockdowns we seem to be getting hit with colds harder, or maybe I’ve just forgotten how much colds suck! To see what the bases will be like, check out my previous unit of Spearmen.

As advertised earlier, I got some painting time in tonight and progressed the Elves whilst watching some F1 and the Motley Crue movie (the dirt). It’s a good watch, and unbelievable how they’re still alive! Anyways, the Elves were all about slogging through the white robes;

Now you’d be forgiven to think that I only painted the spearmen and 15 Archers, but the others actually got some paint too. The step from Celestra to Ulthuan greys was too much in one pass as the folds in the lower part of their robes is very shallow. so I did a 50:50 mix for a first highlight on all of the Archers gown bits before going over the 15 at the back with neat Ulthuan.

Whilst doing the whites I spotted that most of their straps need tidying up as I got flesh colours on them. Still I’m hopeful I can get them to a point that I’ll be able to finish them either this weekend or next

Thanks for looking!

Yeah, that’s the image I have in mind, no doubt it’ll look no where near as dramatic as it does in the movies, but hopefully it’ll look decent enough! Not sure what’ll need next, tempted by my SMH conversions after seeing you start on a squad.

Yep, they seem to like lingering of late! As for the whites I think the photo somehow helps, though this is the nicest looking white I’ve managed. Thin multiple coats is what I’m doing, plus I’m using a grey which looks white against all of the colours!

So I’ve stayed up way past bedtime, but I’ve pretty much got the painting on the Elves done! There’s a bit of paint to go on the spear tips once the blue wash dries and that’s them painted. Here they are with the white robes finished;

It was a massive slog, but I’m really pleased how they’ve turned out. Here’s post a few touch ups and the Spear tips painted gunmetal and washed blue.

A few boots need more touch up work but I’ll save that for when their bases are done.

It was late when I finished that step, but I had a max idea to add some levels to their display shelf. The ikea furniture for my daughters room had a near perfectly sized honeycomb board that I thought would make a decent structure. I also had some left over polyfilla one fill that I used to make a transition between the levels.

I’m hoping that I have enough basing material left to apply it across the whole board. I have some made with a yellow paint for the elites layer and some with black for the line layer. I’m currently torn on whether to texture underneath the units or leave that portion bare so the unit slots in and sits evenly. What do you guys reckon? Oh and if I do, should I have unit base tray for each of them?

Thanks for looking!

If I understand the question properly, I feel like your going to want to leave the area for the troops completely flat, or the little textures will drive you mad when the models won't sit completely flush against the board. If you're feeling particularly industrious, you could make faux-unit trays on the board by making squares out of spare sprue measured to the units foot print, and then texture right up to the sprues so that there is a smooth transition between the board and the model bases.

Not sure if any of that made sense, but I'll offer it on the off-chance it's useful advice

That’s a really good point, and makes total sense! Ranking them up on an uneven surface will be next to impossible! I like the idea of using unit trays, but I think I may use card to butt the texture up to, then remove the card to make the recesses. If I do around them first then pull them out when its starting to dry I should get a decent edge if I run a blunt knife around it first.

I skipped painting last night in favour of a movie with Mrs gobert. We watched Senior Year on Netflix, and it was one of those movies where the trailer shows you the majority of the good bits. Didn’t have to think to hard which was a major plus point though! .

Anyways, tonight I caught up on the F1 and started on the bases for the Elves. Unfortunately my mix was a bit wetter than my previous pot of basing material so I didn’t make the progress I’d hoped for. Previously the material had been able to span the slotta gaps but tonight the first attempt just seeped through the gap! I quickly found a solution in some sticky labels my daughter has. They seem to have great sticking power (I needed to scrub to get one to come off her window sill the other day!) and the paint/sand mix should bind the edges too, so fingers crossed they stay on. That also meant that I decided to trim the slottas off the Elves and just stand them on the basing material. I then found they didn’t like to stand up properly so I used some of the archers to stop their mates falling over.

The new mix seems a bit smoother than the previous, but hopefully that might just be that the paint is more watery and that once dried it’ll be just as lumpy as before. That seems to happen with the yellow equivalent, but we’ll see tomorrow. The good news is that it’s pretty easy to spread about so it should be spot on for the display board, which I’ll definitely make my next project.

Thanks for looking!

Lol. Using the archers to hold up their buddies reminds me of how my metal commisar (The one firing a bolt pistol with one hand tucked behind his back) used to bully my assault marines into staying upright while the glue dried. (The me of ten years ago never really thought of just letting the legs dry and THEN attaching the torsos. That was an "advanced techinque" I learned later )

Yep, it’s all next level stuff here! … though I’m not sure I thought to let the legs dry first on my assault marines!

I finished off the texturing of the bases tonight after the kids went to sleep, you’ll all be glad to hear that I did carry on letting them support one another though seeing as it worked really well.

The first batch was all dry and whilst there isn’t the variety of texture that the original batch of basing paint had, it still seems to have come out pretty decently. I’m hoping that the colour is close enough to abaddon black that I don’t feel the need to give it a coat of that before the dry brushing can commence. I’ll check tomorrow night and report back.

Thanks for looking

Indeed, and it seems to be finally nearing the end!

I couldn’t leave the bases all finished and not dry brushed so I got straight to it once the kids were in bed tonight. I even had time to paint their rims too. That meant that all of the bases are now done! And with it the Archers are complete!

The eagle eyed will notice that there are a few more than previous pics as their previously finished 10 mates were brought in on the action too. I think they look pretty good all together, and they’re not too dissimilar despite having different recipes for the robes. I prefer the newer ones, but I’m not so fussed as to redo the OG bowmen.

For those who are sad that this project is done, fear-nought as there is more work to be done! The spearmen need some shields and the banner bearer needs his banner of course. The banner is done (courtesy of teenage gobert) but I’m short a few shields, so I’ll have to make them before I can paint them. Looking at the OG spearmen I painted their spears brown, and it looks a bit naff, so I’ll redo them to match the later ones. Even then I won’t be done, there’s the display board I started at the weekend, but there’s also another spot that’s vacant, for a Chariot that needs updating. That’ll be done at some point this year so I can finally say I’ve finished a project… *checks eBay saved searches* for now!

Thanks for sticking with this epic batch paint!

Strangely enough I am a bit sad, it’s been a fun journey in a kind of mindfulness way. Still, there’s one more mini to go, so the fun ain’t over yet! Having said that, I maybe wouldn’t recommend such a large batch of minis to paint!
youwashock wrote:Three cheers!

Hooray! Hooray! HOORAY!

I managed to find my spare Elven shields and confirmed that I’m 4 shy of what I need . My previous mould for them was also broken so I tried some more. Sadly it looks like I’ve not quite got it right, I think because the water for the Oyumaru wasn’t hot enough by the time I figured out what I was doing. Hopefully I’ll find some time to sort the mojo out tomorrow.

Putting that failure behind me, I commenced the display board basing material for the Elves. Earlier I’d cut out some cardboard pieces to mask off the areas that the units will stand. I decided to make small hills for the repeater boot thrower and one of the Archer units so I glued their tray in place and built a slightly raised area around them. Here they all are arranged on their future home

I then slapped on the last of my black basing texture paint

And then most of the rest of my yellow paint

I had hoped to use the yellow as the base colour for the glowing volcanic bases, but it’s a bit flat now that it’s dry. So I think I’ll give it a prime all over and then crack out the airbrush to get the base colours right before I get started with the mega dry brushing saga!

Thanks for looking!

Hehe, the result of having a mass of minis ready does make it tempting to join the insanity. I’m half tempted to do something nuts with my Necrons given they’re such a simple paint scheme. I need to think about what my next WHFB projects will be, maybe my Chaos.

It really does feel great, I’m so close to having a fully painted collection! I need to start the chariot sometime before October to finish it completely this year. I’m glad you enjoyed their slow progress towards completion.

Thanks Olthannon, it’s been a long journey to this point! I too love the old Silver Helms, I wish I had more, but I don’t have hobby pockets that deep right now

So the Monaco GP was a long one, so I decided to crack on with my display board… and I seem to have finished it! Woot!

I’m a bit annoyed that I didn’t take any WIP pics, but it was fairly simple. The lower level got an Averland Sunset coat, then I did some stripes of Blazing Orange, Wild Rider Red and Mephiston Red, then a mix of black and Mephiston. I then went to town on it with a big old dry brush, starting with a heavy Blazing Orange over the yellow, wild rider over the yellow and orange, and so on until the whole area got a light dry brush of black. The black areas then got Eshin Grey and Dawnstone highlights to match the rank and file bases.

I’m pretty chuffed how it’s turned out, so I took a few pics of individual units;

They’re ready to take pride of place next to my Blackstone Fortress display. I think I might look for a battle of mount doom background to use for it, as plain white is a bit dull.

Thanks for looking and giving encouragement through the work on the Army, I hope you enjoy the pics!

Thanks syro, it was a long trek, but I’m loving the end result. I’m certainly anxious to get the chariot done, even if I am a bit sick of Elves right now! I’m waiting on a couple of missing pieces to arrive, and I need to sort the base out too. Once that’s done it’ll probably jump the queue.

Thanks Ezki, sadly satisfying or satisfyingly sad is a good way to sun up this project. Being this close to completely finishing a collection makes me quite proud. Just that Chariot to sort out now! I’m not sure they’d have made White Dwarf as their bases are heretically not goblin green! I think dakka needs a :chefs kiss: orkmoji though
theCrowe wrote:Fantastic work. Timeless classics brought respectfully up to the 21st century.

Thanks theCrowe, the board and basing really helps bring them up to date, though part of me misses goblin green

After the epic Elven marathon I’ve unsurprisingly not done any painting. Having the MIL in town meant I didn’t want to be rude and disappear to paint of an evening. I did however manage to find a bit of time after she left to build some more Necrons;

These tomb blades were a bit fiddly to put together, there were some cables that were ridiculous to fit between the riders spine and the blades spine! Amazingly I managed to find them the couple of times I dropped them on the floor. Having tasted the nectar of finishing the Elves, my oldest Army I’m tempted to do a John Prins and smash out my Necrons too. I’ll not be anywhere near as fast as John, but the plagiarised recipe makes for quick progress and I’ve got nearly all of my Necrons built now. If I do, it won’t be as a single batch, probably finishing them a unit at a time. That said, I’ll base, prime, basecoat and contrast them all at the same time. I need to check Johns plog to see whether airbrushing the contrast paint worked well or not. That’s a plan for future gobert to worry about though!

Thanks for looking and all the lovely comments on the oh so nearly finished Elves!

Well, it’s been a few weeks and I don’t think I’ve so much as picked up a paint brush! I have however been busy doing other hobby related things. The most hobby thing being building more Necrons:

That Overlord was a right PITA to put together, mainly because I broke his weapon by his foot, which meant it was nigh impossible to align everything ! Still, he’s gone together well enough. As well as the 3 Lychguard pictured I also finished the 3rd of the Tomb Blades I showed last time. I also made that one difficult by putting a couple of bits on the wrong side! I think I only have 2 Lychguard and 5 Deathmarks to finish building all of my Necrons. Then they just need basing and painting, easy right!?

I also did a bit of GS moulding on my 3rd Void Panthers Tactical squad, seen here playing with the Necrons.

I ed up a couple that need redoing, but the others came out well, without too much excess GS/milliput overspill. I must be getting better at guessing how little the moulds need

A decent bit of my hobby time though has been taken up sorting through my pile of shame. I spent a couple of evenings sorting out my 2nd Ed Blood Angels and Warhammer Fantasy Battle Empire armies. Looking back through the Blood Angels was really quite nostalgic and got me excited to do some stuff with them. I haven’t taken a pic of them all bagged up ready for future gobert to get to them, but they look similar to the Empire lot.

I’ve got a plan for these guys, they’ll ultimately be getting a display base which I central to the inspiration to bag them up in preparation. It’ll also need a decent bit of 3d Printing to come through, as I want to do a town square for them. Complete with town houses and cobblestone bases. Don’t get too excited as it’ll probably take me 3 years! . What am I saying, it’ll be more than that!

The thing that brought on all of the sorting though was my new Hobby storage area:

Previously I only had piles of boxes and everything was inaccessible, needing to play Jenga to find the bits I wanted. I will also be able to stash my printer in there, keeping the dust off it a bit between usage. Clearly I still have work todo, but it feels like good progress already. The drawers were recovered from an old wardrobe we had and the other bit is a kitchen cabinet corner unit I bought. I need some hinges and a worktop and it’ll be much neater storage.

Thanks for looking!

Just caught up with this - I'm in love with your High Elves display! They were my first and still dearest WHFB army (you'd never tell I liked High Elves from my love of eldar... ), though mine were all newer sculpts than these. This vintage of sculpt are things that I saw as lovingly painted armies in magazines and the like when I was a kid, so it's a fantastic sight to see a paintbrush applied to them once again. So well executed too, and such a classic scheme. Nicely done!

Olthannon wrote:Good to see you updating Gobert. Looks like you have a lot of bits and bobs on the horizon. The empire look cool! I hope that's a project on the closer horizon!

Yeah, I’ve got quite a selection of projects to choose from at the moment, part of the reason for not getting on with anything!

Thanks Bellerophon, I think the display helps elevate them beyond the paint job and the monopose too! I first saw the scheme in White Dwarf when Andy Chambers (iirc) showcased a scheme for the elves which was quick to do… well 25 years or so is pretty quick by my standards and they look good to boot! Cheers!

Not Online!!! wrote:ah yes, saving old hobby mistakes and being nostalgic..

Happened quite a bit when i touched up on my orks.

Yeah, some of the Empire guys are pretty entombed in paint! The cannon in particular is pretty rubbish! I think there might be 2 paint jobs on it already!
Viterbi wrote:Great to see you tackle the Necrons next and with the paint recipe they should go relatively fast compared to the elves Love the new hobby storage area.

Yeah, they’re pretty rapid and I might batch them up and give the airbrush a go. The hobby storage was another reason for no hobby, but that’s done now too!

So as mentioned above the hobby has been slow of late, mostly just building Necrons in quiet moments. The main hobby stuff related task has been sorting the storage space. It was quite a chore in the end and the hobby space/office was an absolute bomb site whilst I did it. Mrs gobert was not impressed but now that it’s done, it’s a massive improvement over the piles of stuff! There’s still piles, but they’re tucked away (mostly! )

I spent more than I planned, and it’s a bit rough in places, but I’m still pleased with the outcome. I might paint the unfinished edges and the dodgy diagonal joint between the pieces, maybe a plasma glow or something?

Today though I actually got some proper hobbying in! My youngest preferred to stay home in the paddling pool instead of going to the shopping mall with my wife and eldest, so I had a day of pool and hobby time! I set off by finishing building the last Necron, a Deathmark (fiddly little blighters!) and arraying them all out for the next step;

Basing! Ok, so some of them already had bits of basing on the go. The leaders of each squad are adorned with bits of space marines. My favourite is either the buried Captain on the Doom Croissant or the 2nd Ed Marine chopped up on the Skorpekh Lords base! They all then got some watered down PVA painted in the bases before adding some sprue rubble and a dunk in some mixed sand (taken from under a previous iteration of the patio I was sat at!)

It’s due to be un-Britishly hot this week so the loft hobby space will be out of bounds. Heck I’m even off in to the office to see if it’s any cooler there! Still, now these guys are all built and based I can give them a spray. Hopefully I can get them primed all done before the family gobert go on their holiday for a couple of weeks.

Until next time… Stay classy Dakka!

Thanks Olthannon, it’ll be a while before the bases get finished with a dusting of snow. Still it feels good to get them ready to prime.

And primed they are;

I gave them a few final touches first, mainly adding a bit of battle damage and adding some bits I’d missed on one of the Tomb Blades… that I kept knocking off as well as one of their guns! I did that while the Little Miss goberts did some mini guys of their own;

Not bad i think! The Stormcasts are from 9yr old gobert jr, she likes the splat blood on them (not sure where she got that idea from!) and the dwarfs are from 6yr old gobert jr (she spent ages on the green “gun” getting it just right, and got a great finish on the base). A fun little way to pass a rainy afternoon in the school holidays!

I also did a few bits and bobs for finishing off the High Elves. I made one more attempt at getting some shields cast up, and prepped the chariot and horses for priming.

The shields came out ok. They are a little fat but once hidden inside the unit they’ll be fine. I’m tempted to buy some resin printed ones to shortcut this process and get them done at last!

One of the axles on the chariot was broken so I re-glued that… for the 2nd time as I broke it again while filing the join last weekend . There seems to be a theme here! The horses got their joins smoothed with milliput and I generally tidied up mould lines all around… and re-reattached horse tails I still need to figure out what to do about the missing bow and arrows from one of the bags that mount on the side of the chariot. The previous owner removed it for some reason

That’s probably the last post from me for a while as we’re off on holiday; visiting family and boating in Northern Ireland, for the next couple of weeks.

I envy you the steel frame pool We thought about getting one, but seeing how tilted in all directions our lawn is, we stuck with the little inflatable pool for this year and may tackle a designated pool area next year

Good to see the Necrons primed and hope the axis will hold this time

Have a cracking time in Northern Ireland. We were there not that long since to visit my wife's family.

Ha! Yeah, it’s been a life saver in this heatwave! I finished work last Friday and pretty much got straight in there it was that hot! The garden is on its 3rd iteration since we moved in, the last one getting a flatter area specific with the pool in mind, well worth it in my book. So much so we bought pool chemicals and a little filter pump to save refilling it all the time.

The Necrons will get their go on the painting desk once the kids go back to school I reckon. I might use a free Friday to get the airbrush going.

Yep, it’s a beauty alright, I’ve now also managed to source all of the parts I was missing! It’s pretty much ready for re-priming now, so want to get cracking. The Prince will get a touch up too, probably removing some of the colours like I did on the metal champion.

My wife is from Northern Ireland too! Main reason we chose there was to visit my Mother In Law. It’s a Small World after all!

Thanks Cap, it was busy yet relaxing and fun, so basically ticked all of the boxes!

I had hoped to be back posting updates a while ago, but my hobby area is in the loft and not a space I wanted to spend much time in during the crazy temperatures Europe has been seeing of late. The weather seems to have finally turned and I was keen to get back on the wagon and sorted out the shields for the High Elf Spearmen I had all but finished a while back:

After another failed casting I caved in and bought some reasonably priced 3d printed shields. They’re not a perfect match but they’re close enough for me.

Whilst I was at it I figured I’d repaint the spears that I’d previously painted brown. The white looks so much more Elven and tie them in with the other unit;

As you can see I also added a banner. I’d originally painted it probably 20years ago, and did a half decent job, so it got a small touch up and was glued on.

A few horrid mould lines on that shot

And proof they all have shields… well, apart from 1… I fixed a silver bell that I’d damaged and realised that one of the OG shields actually belonged to him . The Silver Helm pulled rank and got the shield whilst the poor spearman hid amongst his buddies!
Some of the guys I finished and touched up got mixed in with the first unit so I could match shields per rank

The mould lines again

And this lot do actually all have shields, apart from the standard bearer and horn blower who have nowhere to put one, though I suppose I could strap them across their backs?

So that’s that epic(ly long) project done for the time being! I’ll be back to the elves shortly, but I need to decide on a palette cleanser first. I’m thinking one of the following; Zoat, Void Panther Tactical Sergeant or a Space Marine Heroes Plague Marine.

Thanks for looking!

Not Online!!! wrote:Very good job Gobert, now that you completed these, do you have any old school WHFB projects left?

Thanks Not Online, I don’t feel they’re my best work by a long shot, but I’m in love with their volume! There’s still plenty of Oldhammer WHFB goodness in my collection. Once I’m done with the chariot I’ll carry on with my tiny Chaos bunch and start on my Empire stuff. I also have a bunch of Orcs and Goblins, plus my brothers Undead to tackle at some long distant point. I feel for WHFB I’ll stick to one project at a time though, so maybe I should finish the Chaos next?

Anyways, I decided to get back on the avoid Panther wagon and slapped on some base layers. I followed my usual, but helpfully I sprayed a bunch of marines gold whilst fiddling with the airbrush last year. That meant I got the Purple, black and gunmetal down before calling it a night after the Nuln oil

If I ever work on a large batch of Panther, or maybe some vehicles, I should probably look to spray the Nuln oil as I tend to hit almost everywhere. I also need to get some more too, I hear the new stuff doesn’t stain so much, which will be great! Next session I’ll paint the gold and hopefully get on to the volumetric highlights.

Thanks for looking.

PS - can anyone recommend a good casual board game that has decent miniatures for painting and isn’t too complex?

I got another evenings painting in once the nighthaunts daughters went to sleep . I got stuck in to layering the gold back to Retributor Armour. Here’s a comparison of the Sergeant post layering and the regular marine about to get his layer on;

For this batch I used a new brush. Nothing fancy, just one from a kids painting set, but I’m really impressed with it. It holds the paint well and has a great point, even after hauling metallics. Here’s where the squad got to;

I’m liking the Sgts power fist in black, I figured it’s a weapon and all the other weapons are black. Sadly I forgot to paint the skull on the back in Leadbelcher so I guess I’ll do that before it gets highlighted purple. Before I get to that though I’ll get on with highlighting the gold

Thanks for looking

PS - after several half arsed attempts to secure a few terminators for fill out my Space Marine Heroes squads I seem to have finally succeeded… except I seem to have bought 10 instead of the couple I needed!

I succumbed to buying more bits… to support the Terminators I bought a bunch of Sector Imperialis 40mm bases. In my defence they also come with skulls apparently!

To make space for the impending arrivals I did a bit of work on the Tactical Marines. They’re all shiny now;

Highlighting the gold is pretty fun, shining one of my painting lamps at them head on and filling in where the reflection is, first with Liberator Gold and then Stormhost Silver. I think it helps exaggerate their shine.

Next up is the Leadbelcher before I tidy up the blacks and purples and finishing off with the green and parchments.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks LTMW, I’m pleased I went with the white spears, the brown just looked like they’d borrowed somebody else’s spears!

Olthannon wrote:Nice updates, those Void Panthers are looking great. I agree about the powerfist, looks very cool in black.

Thanks Olthannon, hopefully you like how it’s going now too.

F1 is back, so another evenings watching and painting saw some decent progress. The gun metal bits got their first coat of highlights, just back to Leadbelcher. The blacks all got tidied up. The purple got tidied up and I edge highlighted the weapons purple at the same time;

Which gets us to past the half way point. The gunmetal, blacks and purples will get their highlights progressing next, then the details and the bases to finish.

Through the week I set my printer to build some laptop stands as my work laptop was warming my desk it was getting that toasty! That proved successful at the second attempt so I fancied trying a few other bits. First I printed a crater, it came out well but I think it’s a bit big and looks more like a volcano than a weapon crater so I might not use it. I then figured I’d try something more adventurous and ended up plumbing for an Armiger proxy.

It’s coming out reasonably well, but has quite a few dodgy bits, not that I’m completely bothered as I was thinking nurgle anyways. I might build it up and prime it and see how rubbish it looks. I used my terrain settings so could play around with those and build it a partner at some point.

For nurgle rough is indeed actually quite decent. Especially for vehicles if you go with the rust and decay moreso than the bacteria and tentacles.

Thanks Not Online, it’s fun to do too. Rust is certainly the way I’m thinking of going, get myself some typhus corrosion or similar (anyone know of cheaper alternatives?)

Cheers, it’ll tie them in to their fallen brothers too . I’ve still got a few bits, mainly arms and armour plates to print but hopefully in the next week or so it’ll be together.

Speaking of coming together, the latest Panthers got the their heads back having finished the highlighting on their purple and black black bits. The latter got a pass of Eshin Grey and the former some genestealer purple. Then they, along with the purple black bits got a second highlight of dawnstone. Once done I stuck their heads on too

Next up will be the parchment and green cables, eyes, plasma etc.

That’s all for now, thanks for looking

Thanks Captain, their edging closer now!

Another F1 weekend where I retreat to the loft to watch Quali and the race whilst getting some hobby time in too. Tonight I got the Tacticals pretty much done too;

I tried a new recipe for the plasma (thanks Midwinter Minis), it’s turned out ok I think, not quite as bright as I’d hoped. All that’s left is a highlight on the Sgts helmet stripe and a few touch ups to their base ornaments. I’m quite liking the dead Eldar head the guy on the right is holding and the blood oozing down and pooling by his feet. Grim!

Thanks for looking, I reckon these guys will be done tomorrow night

Cheers, I’m glad you spotted the highlighting, it was mainly bone colours with mixes of Agrax and druchi, then plenty of blood from orifices. There were a couple of mixes of that too with purples and browns and near army painted blood effects. Aka fun messing about !

Whilst watching the race tonight I slapped on the last few bits of paint, mainly just bones on a couple of bases and highlighting the Sgts helmet stripe. And here they are;

And since they needed putting away, here’s a couple from their shelf with their squad mates;

Plus an army shot

And one of the guys poking this gun out

After I finished them I finished building a few more tactical marines for the 3rd squad

And tidied up the shoulder pads of the Assault Bike Marines

Finally a few days back I dragged some RTB01 marines out of their dettol bath and they slipped out of their old paint jobs

I also tried isopropyl alcohol on the terminators I bought last week. I was worried They were painted with enamels, but I think it was just a glossy acrylic varnish. They only soaked for an hour or two whilst I cleaned the RTB01 boys, but most of their paint came off pretty well. It requires a good bit more scrubbing than dettol but I was happy enough, especially as the smell is much less obnoxious than dettol! I set them back to soak to get the last bits from the deepest most thickly painted recesses and will give them a once over later this week. They could do with breaking down to their components as most were shoddily assembled with the sprue connectors still attached preventing parts joining. Still they were pretty cheap (£10 for a squad of 5).

Speaking of cheap I also splashed out on some reinforcements for the Demi company, adding a Chaplain, Librarian and a Rhino for about £33. All are assembled but unpainted, and look to have been better put together than the terminators.

I think that brings us up to date with gobert related hobbying

Thanks for looking!

Hey Ragsta,
it’d cool to see another bling marine force, hopefully the hobby motivation returns and we ge to see some awesomeness!
My shelf unit is a cheapo from Amazon but I modified it quite a bit. I added some hinged plastic sheet for the doors and extra mdf shelves to fit more stuff in.

Here’s its original sparse self

And mid way through upgrade

Then a more recent one showing the details of the hinges

It’s pretty shoddy and I could do better if I didn’t rush and spent a bit of money. That said, it fills the brief of enough space to store and display all of my minis whilst keeping the dust off them. I am already planning g the next expansion.

I’ve got 3 options; modify the current shelf to be triangular (least favourite), a long display along the back wall of the worktop, or a triangular display cabinet above the wooden bit behind the current shelves (favourite). I need to paint more minis first though!

It’s a rare moment to be removing minis to play with, but I’ve made the shelves all removable too, so they are already on trays

A bit of hobby tonight, slapping some paint on a mini that’s a reimagining of a classic that I never owned;

So far just the 3 main colours (Mephiston Red, Eshin Grey and Zandri Dust) and then a druchi violet wash all over. Whilst I’m back underway with her, I’m not sure what colours I’m ultimately going to use. The main decision is on her belly glass, so any thoughts are welcome

Cheers for looking!

Just a minor update tonight. No progress on the Zoat, still can’t figure a colour scheme for her. As a result I went on a building spree. First I fixed up the second half of tactical squad 3,

Most of them even had pad emblems ready to go. I’m really pleased with the lad in the centre’s pose, I think it’s up there with the Space Marine Heroes. Some of their bases turned out pretty well, using cut up bits of 25mm bases that came with the the 40mm for the Terminators.

In the background there’s also the Rhino I got on eBay. It had a decent bit of work; filling gaps, filing panels, opening the back door & top hatch and removing lots of inquisition iconography. I still have a few bits I want to do with it, like add another front hatch and probably some 3d printed Void Panther iconography.

Next I gave the Chaplain and the Librarian new 32mm bases;

The librarian is from Kill Team Cassius, so had his Blood Raven and Inquisition iconography removed. I also put together the bits of the Techmarine that I kitbashed, he needs some mechadendrites creating when I can print a suitable cable roller.

I finished up the evening with the command squad

I think I’ll do some work on their bases, but they’re pretty decent otherwise. I might do the Devastator squad next so most of the army will be ready for priming.

Thanks for looking

Thanks syro, the shelving unit gets better with every mini that occupies it I think you’re right, though the wooden area will be a more challenging project… and yes, ultimately I’d like to do both!

My building spree carried on tonight with some work on my Terminators. I finished cleaning them this afternoon but, boy, do they need plenty of work! The person that built them used a strong glue, but put them together with the sprue tabs still on in places. That means as well as getting the legs off to try for a better pose I’m also having to split the torso, both of which are proving tricky! I’ve got a few torsos separated and rebuilt, but I decided to concentrate on some of my duplicate Space Marine Heroes;

The Thunder Hammer duplicate has become the regular Terminator squads Sergeant by getting the other duplicates’ Storm Bolter and the eBay rescue Terminator Sergeants Power Sword. I quite like the pose, it keeps some of the dynamism of the Heroes range but is a bit different. The other duplicate will be getting some Lightning Claws from the rescued Assault squad. I’ve also mocked up a running rescue Marine with the duplicates Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield. I still have a duplicate Power Fist to throw in to the regular squad.

I’m then not sure what to do sight the remaining rescue Marines. I think I’ll do another Squad to go with the Cyclone Missile Launcher Hero, but need a couple more Storm Bolters and a Sergeants weapon. I’d also like to use the Sergeant legs hiding in the back of the pic, but I need to get his head out and find a helmet as I can’t seem to separate them from the torso.

I’m still struggling for Zoat motivation, so will probably carry on building for a while, and don’t be surprised to see something else getting paint first.

Thanks for looking

I’ve been continuing to fettle with the Terminators, adding a few bits to the Space Marine Heroes twins. I think they’re far enough away from their originals now, but will be getting some basing work done too. I also threw together a Sergeant for the extra squad I’ll be building too.

The new Sgt is using a sword I had got in a bunch of Dark Angels bits I got a while back. I also solved my Stormbolter shortage and found an extra pair of legs to mix things up some more.

I was hoping to have more to show, but the rescue of these eBay terminators is taking quite some effort. Thankfully I got them at a good price!

Not Online!!! wrote:

Thanks NotOnline, to be honest I’m not sure what glue they used. At first I thought it was poly cement, but it seems to be a layer on top of the plastic, not welding the pieces together. It also seems to leave a residue that my poly cement is not working on, so I guess some kind of super glue?

Carrying on the theme of terminator builds I have now finished off the build of the 3 squads;

First up is the Assault Terminators. Thanks to my bad photo composition you can’t see one of the Thunder Hammers, but I think he has a decent running pose, well, as much as a Terminator can run!

Second is the regular squad. These guys had a little more work, and I’m pleased how the regular marine came out. His legs had the sergeant crux on them, but I shaved it off and filed it down as he’s just a regular Terminator.

And finally here’s the squad to go with the Cyclone launcher dude. The guy at the back and the guy on the left have a few extras from the Dark Angels bits I got a while back. In fact the guy at the back has legs from that kit too, albeit with the DA icons shaved off. They’re not as dynamic as the SMH boys, but I’m happy enough with them.

Looking through my bits I think I’m 1 body and 8 arms from having enough bits for another squad… maybe when this lot is painted?

No pics as yet, but I’ve also started make the master mould for their shoulder pad icons. I’ll try to remember pics next time. That might be a while though as I’m away with work next week (Zoat will be travelling with me) and at the weekend I’m helping my brother in law destroy their kitchen and rip up their floor (if we don’t get it done, I’ll probably be back there the following weekend too!) ready for builders to arrive.

That’s it for now, thanks for looking!

Thanks mcmatilla, the glow was just following the recent Midwinter Minis guide. It was pretty simple but gives a decent glow effect, particularly in the photos

I’m currently away with work, but have brought a few bits with me to get some progress on the Zoat.

Last night I decided to layer rather than dry brush her scales… because I’m crazy! That and ultimately I want different shades of red in different areas. To be honest, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting, and so far looks quite good. I’m thinking of oranges for the scales and bone highlights for the chitinous areas. Depending what time I get back from dinner I might throw some paint at her tonight too.

Thanks for looking

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I got back from dinner at a sensible time and managed to make some good progress on the Zoat.

First I took the mix of reds up from Mephiston, Adding Evil Sunz Scarlet, Blood Angels Orange and Fire Dragon Bright. I kept the same pool of paint and added lighter colours, with each layer being smaller and covering fewer scales each time.

Most from this view have had the lightest colours applied.

Next I start d a new mix, working from Mephiston, adding more and more Zandri Dust for the solid looking scales on her legs and the under belly chitin.

In this pic it’s easier to see that I applied a base layer over the armoured areas before calling it for the night. It needs another few layers, but im feeling the motivation the get her done now!

Thanks for looking

Fupping excellent Gobert! Really nice contrast on the zoat skin. Terminators look great too, always love to see them. Such cool minis.

Thanks Olthannon, she’s turned out better than I had hoped. I’d stalled on ideas for quite a while, and I’m nearly at the limit of ideas I had. I’m edging towards turquoise as her 3rd colour now. I saw someone doing a Space Marine Heroes Terminator on instagram, and it’s got me keen to do something with mine.

A productive week away for work and hobby came to a grinding halt in the ridiculous queue at Köln/Bonn Airport yesterday. Arrived in plenty of time but the queue was longer than the time available and about half of the passengers missed the flight! So if you’re thinking of flying from CGN, check for other flights or arrive about 4 hours before your flight. On the plus side I always enjoy train journeys, it’s just a civilised way to travel even if I’m getting home 20 hours late!

Anyway, rant over, here’s some hobby… I got a good bit done on the Zoat, you saw my last post getting the skin done and on the last intended evening I highlighted the armour;

Next will be highlighting the black bits and then to tackle the tummy glass which I will do with a turquoise glow if nobody has better ideas. That’ll probably have to wait for next weekend as I’m knackered and not home yet!

Great work, gobert! The armor is looking really good paired with that lovely red. I think going teal/turquoise is a good call for the belly plate.

Thanks Not Online, they were fun to do, if slower than drybrushing.

Cheers youwashock, it was somewhat inspired by the red Zoat on warcom, and as you’ll see i swapped the OGs green with turquoise.

Yeah, they’re a rare breed the red ones! Rumour has it they’re faster too…

Cheers Olthannon, I’m liking the tinting of everything with purple, it helps with the contrast a bit too I feel.

So it’s been a while. Last weekend was spent beasting myself by helping my Brother-in-law rip out their kitchen and lift what must’ve been a few tons of tiles. As a result no mid week painting happened and tonight was the first night I felt like it. I ended up getting the Zoat all but done too. I started with the greys, building them up to an off white, sticking with the mixing the lighter colour in to the previous colour and having a bit of druchi purple to keep the tones similar. I went quite pale for a high contrast, but didn’t stray to NMM. Then I had fun with the belly plates, vials and gems. Starting with a turquoise wash, then adding white in a squiggly pattern and repeating, before finishing with an even lighter turquoise wash. The final touch was to paint her toe nails, first brown then adding Zandri Dust;

Th belly glow isn’t what I’d originally envisaged, but I quite like it, so it’s staying. Hope you guys like her!

Thanks for looking

I like the belly glow. It gives the impression that there’s lots of motion going on in there. Lots of little lights floating around in there as opposed to one big glowy glow. Great work.

Hot damn, love the glowy tum tum, it looks galactic!

I have to say I love the mini, it looks so alien, especially the gun. Your colour scheme is so impressive, I'm glad you went with this in the end instead of the green.

Hopefully 3x faster

I like the belly glow on the Zoat. And I can comiserate with the tile work, nothing quite destroys the knees like replacing tile.

Thanks theCrowe, I had originally intended to go for bigger gloss, but somehow ended up with smaller ones that looked a bit like they were moving and leaving a trail so stuck with them.

Thanks Olthannon, I like how she’s a throwback to being a Tyranid emissary in this colour scheme… maybe I should take a snap of her next to my gaunts?

Thanks youwashock, I hoped you would like her, given your Zoat affinity. She’s been fun and relatively quick (for me!)

Definitely! . Amazingly the knees were just about ok, it’s been my right hand and elbow from all of the hammer blows. The concrete under floor went down on Thursday, so I imagine I’ll be heading back some time in November to help lay the tiles.

Mrs gobert is away this weekend, so I got stuck in with some hobby work and got the Zoat finished! I also rebased the Escalation explorers on 3d printed bases. It’s the Zoat we’re all here for though, so full fat pics incoming;

I’m really pleased with this colour for the base too, it’s probably my favourite colour I’ve done. It started with deadly nightshade, then ultramarine blue, enchanted blue and a final highlight with white mixed in. She’s been a great mini to paint, trying a few new things.

Here are the Escalation explorers now they have their new bases;

With those guys all done I only have the 2 guardian drones to paint for a complete Blackstone Fortress set including the expansions. That said I’ve just started printing the terrain for the expansions, so that’ll keep me on the BSF fix for some time to come.

Not sure what I’ll paint next, in the primed drawer I have the second half of my jump pack assault squad, Space Marine Heroes Series 3 plague marines, some khorne chaos warrior dudes and the Tiranoc Chariot to finish off my High Elves. I’m away again with work, so it might be good to have something easy to take with me.

As promised, I managed a little more hobby time tonight as well. I settled on the Void Panthers assault Squad;

So far it’s just been the purple and gunmetal over the airbrushed gold. I’ll hopefully get some more stuff done when they come away with me next week.

Thanks Not Online, I’m pleased how they came out. The Panthers in their current state are a bit less snazzy…
Olthannon wrote:Brilliant stuff Gobert. All of the Blackstone Fortress models are excellent.

Thanks Olthannon, Blackstone Fortress has been a really enjoyable painting journey for me, it’s a shame that the official minis are nearing an end… just had a thought that I should look up the minis for the White Dwarf missions in the meantime, the void panthers are here!

I’m currently away with work again, this whole post covid thing is getting things almost back to normal. This time I’ve brought a bunch of assault marines with me and tonight i got them to the wash stage;

I do like their dirty look at this stage, maybe when I get to their mid corruption units I’ll do some in similar colours to this? I’ve also just realised that I hadn’t done the wash on the jump packs, so will do that before heading to bed

Thanks for looking

Thanks Ragsta, I’m pleased you like the Zoat. I was dubious for a while, but really like how she’s turned out in the end. And yeah, the gems on the floor look better for a bit of extra highlighting work, thanks for noticing!

Thanks Ezki, the scheme came out nicely in the Zoat in the end! What I love about the printed bases is how easy they are to paint; a few dry brushed shades and a bit of black and their mostly done, unless I add blood splatter!

So I’ve been absent for quite some time. Later the night of my first post I was taken out by a bout of food poisoning that floored me for nearly a week. Then I got smashed with a cold that got in to my sinuses and that took care of the next couple of weeks too. I’m still suffering, but had a day off yesterday so I decided to play with my airbrush and base coat the rest of my Necrons but what a faff I had!

I managed to get them done, but with lots of clogging and splattering I don’t think I saved any time compared to just brush painting. I think Ive got a decent routine to clean it now at least! I’ve watched quite a few videos, but it’s still quite frustrating. It could be that the paint didn’t help (Leadbelcher air), as I hear metallics are quite fussy with airbrushes. At first all I got was splatter, but when I thinned it 50:50 with thinner it would work for a while, but with a very tight arc so basecoating still took a while!

I was thinking of a zenithal of iron breaker or Mithril silver, but not sure I can handle the faff, so I might just go for good old fashioned dry brushing. Similarly I had though of applying the contrast by airbrush, but I might go with brush of that too. The Monster brush that came with my speed paint set is really great for that sort of thing.

As ever, thanks for looking!

It seems that I’m back on the wagon, and threw some drybrush highlights at the Necron. The iron breaker heavy dry brush added some shine to them;

As they’ll be getting a good contrasting, I added a more zenithal dry brush of Mithril Silver;

I’m pretty happy with their shine now, so they’re ready for the John Prins mix of contrast. I reckon I’ll split them into smaller groups for the next stages
