I believe you that the display board looks great with the additional colors, because the black one is already impressive!
And nice progress on the Blood Angels! My boys just looked over my shoulder and both said, they were great

Thanks Viterbi, I’m glad your boys are liking the Blood Angels. Thanks for the reminder to get a photo of the board *scurries off to take photo... *scurries back... and here we are;

I’m liking it already and really makes the Panthers stand out!

I was undecided what to do on the Angels next but plumbed for highlighting their armour. The first edge highlight is an old Citadel paint; Blazing Orange. It’s got a bit of a sheen, an odd consistency (watery but dries rapidly!

It took a while, but they’re coming along nicely now. Looking back I switched from golden yellow to fire dragon bright on the last lot, so I’ll go with the new paint I reckon.

Thanks for looking

Void Panthers look absolutely ace. That photo backdrop scenery is right on.

Nice progress on the angels.

The zenithal highlighting on the display board looks very natural. I really like effect you achieved of light shining down on the ruins.

I like the work on the old Blood Angels as well. I will always love the classic marine aesthetic. The guy with the powerfist and banner was always one of my favorite models for the dynamic way he is brandishing his banner pole. The color scheme looks good and I especially like the way the chest Aquila and leg icons came out.

Oh yeah, that is one heck of a display board!
Truly makes the Void Panthers look even better.

Like The Riddle of Steel mentioned, the zenithal highlight looks really natural.

Upon watching the picture, 'Ave Maria' started playing in my head.
I imagined the Panthers moving forward in slow motion, dust trail rising behind the bikes, muzzle flashes popping from their guns, shells bouncing from the ground and the heavy bolter dude firing his gun non stop.

Cheers youwashock, I’m loving the contrast with the Panthers and can’t wait to paint it up.

Yeah I’m torn whether to drybrush some highlights on or leave the ruins as is but just add details. The banner bearer is pretty cool, he’s been fun to paint so far.

Hehe, yeah, it’s got a bit of a last stand bursting through an urban wasteland.

Thanks for the comments guys, it helps with the motivation. I’m gonna need it as I did a bit of a tidy up last night which turned in to a Void Panther stocktake. I seem to already have enough Marines for 3 Tactical Squads, 1 Assault Squad, 1 Devastator Squad and a Command Squad... so yeah, a complete Demi-Company! That’s not to mention the Bike Squad, Landspeeder, Attack Bike, Venerable Dreadnought, Terminator Captain and Space Marine Heroes Series 2 (inc another Terminator Captain). All of which means that I should stop looking at eBay and get building and painting the stuff that I already have... but I need to convert a few things to make this work. I’m gonna try to convert the Land Speeders Multi-Melta for the Devastators, the Medic for the command squad only has a backpack, the Banner bearer needs a banner and the Captain needs legs. I think I have suitable bits to modify for all bar the Apothecary. I might need to do some sprue carving!

Thanks Cap!

So after my post the other day I couldn’t get the multi melta conversion out of my head. So I started with this;

I found a few conversions using the Landspeeder Multi Melta but none of them really did it for my. I tried a standard sort of weapon holding position but it didn’t look very good. Then I found an old Legion of the Damned Devastator that looked cool and wasn’t too dissimilar to the bits that I had. The Blood Angel didn’t fit with the weapon though as his knife got in the way. He was replaced with similarly clad eBay marine. I wanted to keep some of the details so decided to flip the back half of the receiver (do Melta weapons even have a receiver?). So I gave my new jewellery saw a go;

I meant to call it a night here but it was looking good so I glued the gun halves together and added the arm;

Next I cut a chunky bit of sprue up to fashion a handle. The saw came in handy here as the blade was small enough to change direction!

2nd Ed bolter resting hand was way too big though so I swapped it for a modern weapon holding arm

Which looked much better! Next I worked on the wrist support which is just a piece of plastic packaging. It took 3 goes to get the length right, but it looks decent enough. I then added the cylinders to the marines backpack which I’d had to hack up to make it fit and seem a bit more integrated. Using some waxed string I started to make pipes to run from the bottom of the backpack to what was originally the pintle mount. After chopping off the pintle arms I drilled a couple of holes that became a single slit.

I need to finish the pipes by glueing the other end to the back pack. I’ll probably also seal them and maybe fashion some cable ties like gw like I use.

There’s obviously a fair bit of neatening up and gap filling, but I’m really liking the overall look. I may do small canister like the LotD guy has, probably by taking cast from a Melta gun bottle. I might try to sculpt a curve to finish the wrist strap too.

What do you guys think? Any pointers for tweaks?

I like the canister you added to the powerpack, not sure what else you could add to it, maybe some wiring coming off the pack to it?

Hi Gobert,
I just finished looking through this entire blog. What a lot of nice stuff you have done. I really enjoyed seeing the miniatures your daughters painted. I think it was smart that you gave them EM4 miniatures to paint. Real miniatures, but not pricey. I'm probably forgetting some stuff, but my favorite things on your blog so far are what you did with Black Stone Fortress, your Warhammer Fantasy High Elves, and your Rogue Trader style painted Crimson Fists.

Yeah, I’ll give that a go with the canister. I’ll have think about straps/rivets once I’ve glued the cables in to the backpack. Maybe some GS or thin plastic sheet I have.

Thanks Yorkright, Bright Red BAs are the only choice for this era of mini imho! I like the idea of wires/pipes on the backpack, I feel it needs something more to bulk it out. I thought about trying to bulk out the top bit too to be like a bigger main tank or pump system maybe?

Hi Syro, welcome to my blog, it must’ve been quite an undertaking to read through it all! The EM4 stuff was pretty cool, like you say real minis, but cheap as chips! You’ve listed some of my favourite stuff too, I really need to find some time to do some more RT Fists. Once the extension is done I’ll have a utility room sink to more safely strip paint without fear of making a mess (don’t worry though, I won’t be pouring nasty down the drain!)

So despite 5 mammoth sessions of painting at the weekend I have nothing to show on here, but I do have a nicely painted Kitchen, Dining Room and Utility Room. The real work will start when I begin changing the doors throughout the house, which will probably distract me for the next few months. Instead my update is to announce that I’m entering the world of 3D Printing, hopefully it’ll arrive ahead of the weekend and I can do a couple of test prints. From there I’ve gathered a few bits for doing shoulder pad icons as the card derived moulds look a bit wonky. I’ll still reserve
theCrowe’s Void Panther chapter icon for Sgts and above. All I need to do is figure out 3d modelling to get the rest of the lads sorted along with the vehicles! The other prints I’m keen to do are terrain for my Blackstone Fortress stuff, the print bed isn’t massive so I will probably have to split the larger pieces to fit. Fun times ahead!

Yeah, it’s pretty cool. I went for a beginner printer that seems to work well straight out of the box. Minimal set up time! Things are finally coming to a head on the extension, the builders have pretty much finished inside now.

I reckon I’ve earned a few hobby hours! . Matching the LOTD guy was pretty fun and not too hard to do. Hopefully the resolution of the printer allows me to use it for bits and not just terrain
Not Online!!! wrote:OK this willl be more interesting.

Hopefully I can do some interesting things. I’m not sure how much knowledge I’ll be able to provide as I’m hoping to stay away from tinkering as much as I can. I don’t want to have to fiddle loads with settings, we’ll see how that goes!
Viterbi wrote:That door renovation task sounds nasty, good that you can stretch it.

Yeah, the builders were questioning my sanity, but I reckon I’ll take it slow and have few tricks up my sleeve...

So no real hobby update today, but I have been busy modelling and downloading files for the printer. There’s so much cool stuff available out there for free it’s almost overwhelming. A quick look on thingiverse or cults3d searching for Warhammer gives thousands of hits! I’ve probably already downloaded enough to keep the printer busy for over a year! There’s even a template for creating your own custom shoulder pads, so obviously I’ve had a go at some Void Panther ones. They look good in the software, hopefully the printer can handle the curves! I’ll do a test run on the Hyper setting to see how it turns out and how long it takes.

I’ve got a plan to justify the printer to Mrs gobert by printing templates for my router to speed up the door hanging process. Sadly there weren’t any bits online that would work for me, so I had a go myself. I’d forgotten how much fun 3d modelling can be. I did a bit at uni and a few years back built a Google Earth model of our old house, so it wasn’t a complete start from scratch. I’ve got the door handle and hinge jig drafted and will get them on the printer next.

I did manage to get the printer working between models too. Obviously I had to print 3dbenchy, which I think came out ok. There are plenty of visible layers but it was on the standard setting, so hopefully the finer settings will minimise those without being too silly in terms of time. Amazingly the printer seemed to handle the curves better than the straight lines on angles. Here’s the ubiquitous proof I have a 3d printer!

Ha! Yeah, they’re really starting to proliferate. Right now there’s a bit much faffing for my preference, but I got a ready out of the box printer for a decent price. We’ll see how it goes, if it’s no good for terrain and bits I’ll look to sell it on.
youwashock wrote:Your wee boat is adorable, gobert. Good luck with further prints!

Cheers, even a simple printer like mine is a bit finickity. I’ve been trying my hand at shoulder pads with mixed results so far.
MegaDave wrote:Pretty neat little boat, how many nurglings can you fit on it?!

Hehe, 3dbenchy is pretty cute, sadly it’s probably only a couple of nurglings at a time.
amazingturtles wrote:I love the tiny boat! I need seven.

This one has gone to my youngest, I’ll save the next 7 for you turtles!

Not much hobby time of late. Last weekend’s hobby hours were spent designing router templates to help speed up cutting rebates for hinges and latches. Weekend evening were then spent printing them off. I’ve not tried them yet, but with a little bit of filing I’ll have some good templates.

I’ve found a shoulder pad customiser and tried to create some Void Panther pads. I had decent success with the first pair, but unfortunately the technique made the Panther look more like a wolfs snout. I’m still fiddling with positions and think I might have a decent solution, except the printer has gone all stringy now. I’ll clean the nicer ones up when I get some hobby time later. If I think on I’ll take photos of some of the printed bits too.

Thanks for the comments, hopefully some interesting pics soon

Really digging your appropriately coloured Blood Angels. And welcome to the 3d printing club!

I bought both an MSLA and FDM printer while still in Afghanistan early this year and have no regrets. For running shoulder pads you may have more luck with a resin printer but for 4 pound you could probably get a .2mm nozzle and slow down your speeds for good results.

Looking forward to more!

Resourceful work with the multimelta conversion! Packaging plastic has many uses indeed.

3D-modelling is really fun! Been doing some practicing over the last spring.
I was supposed to print some of the models I've done with my friend's printer, but once again it seems to be out of commission

Also good luck with all the renovation, it's hard work. But worth it in the end.

Cheers AustonT, there really is only one colour for Blood Angels. Sadly my Blood Red dried out so my latest lot are the modern GW equivalent. I suspect you may be right on the pads needing to be resin, I’ve been busy with Router templates the past few hobby sessions, but I have some promising pad designs. I think I can improve the quality of output with some tinkering, I need to figure out a step by step calibration as there’s just too many variables even with the simple slicer it came with.

The multi melta was fun, he watches over my desk while I work, I should try to get around to painting him at some point. Sadly I’ve not got the time to learn much complicated modelling, but I’ve done what most people seem to do and built a large catalogue of stuff to print. Once I’m done with extension related diy I might find time to tune the settings and get printing a few things
Bellerophon wrote:The blood angels are looking great, I love seeing classic models done justice. And welcome to the 3d printer club! Though I admit my FDM printer has been idle for a while, I've still got the temptation to go resin...

Cheer Bellerophon, I think you’ll have painted your warlord quicker than I’ve painted these guys! Resin is tempting, but the price is a bit steep and I don’t like the idea of the chemicals.

So I’m still here but there’s not been much time for hobby lately. I’ve done some printing of things mainly diy related, but have done some shoulder pads and Medic bits for the Void Panthers. Not sure how the latter will turn out, but I’m hopeful on the former. I have two variants of pads that look decent, I just need to figure out decent settings and ways to improve surface finish. Once I’ve primed them I’ll share pics as they’re a bit hard to photograph in bare PLA.

Tonight though I picked up the painting sticks for the first time in forever. Only a short session but I got the edge highlights done on the red of the Blood Angels. Somehow they look better in the photos than RL, so that’s nice.

This was also the first time trying out a new brush. After my last session I decided to treat myself and bought a few Green Stuff World Kolinsky brushes. I was reasonably impressed with this one, though it might take a while to get used to the long bristles. I just need to keep taking good care of it now!

Hopefully I’ll get some more progress soon

Thanks youwashock, it’s good to be back painting, though I suspect it’ll continue being sporadic.

So not good news to share tonight. I was finally done printing my router templates for the door project and my printer packed in! I was part way through tuning it to start proper hobby printing when it came up with a heating error. Taking the extruder apart I noticed a connector was green and brown with a bulge in the side. I’m hoping it’s just the connector and it hasn’t tried the board or the heating element. I’ve ordered a soldering it and a few similar connectors in the hope of repairing it. And here was me buying a cheap printer that was supposedly simple! Oh well, I hope I can remember how to solder after what must be the best part of 20years!

To replace your blood red you could do Vallejos “Bloody Red” but I find it’s shade is a little off. I’ve found Mecha Color Red 69008 to be a very good match when dried. If you’re interested I’ve probably got 15 reds I’ve bought looking for the right match. You may find one more to your liking than the Mecha color. I’ve also done a test with unaltered Liquitex ink and feel like I’m real close at what I think will be 1/10th the cost of miniature paints for airbrush basing and vehicles

What printer and filament are you working with. 185 DOES look good but a lot of those temps are REALLY stringing. How long has that filiment been open and is it in a dryer box?

Cheers for the colour tips AustonT, I’ll look out for them next I go paint shopping. I’m liking them in Evil Sunz Scarlet for now, so I’ll see how it goes.
The filament is about a week old, it lives in a compartment in the printer so shouldn’t be ageing too badly.”, stringing and oozing is the next problem I intend to hone!

So good news all round, in Printer land it’s back working, and in mini guy land I managed some painting, lastly the skirting boards are all painted! My back is most happy for the latter of those 3!

The printer wasn’t too bad to fix. I ordered a soldering iron to allow me to replace the connector that had blown in the pics from my last post. I don’t think it was a perfect solder joint but it seems serviceable and the extruded now heats up nicely. I’m midway through fiddling with the retraction settings, but I’m off to bed shortly so won’t be able to finish it completely.

The blood angels took some steps towards completion after I fixed the printer. Nothing major as it was already late when I started so all I got done was the Black. Tidy up the areas with Game Color Black, then edge highlighting with Eshin Grey then Dawnstone. All was done with my new GSW Kolinsky Brushes, and I have to say “I’m loving them.” So much more control and better flow off them, well worth the minor expense!

Let me know what your think, and thanks for looking!

Looking good mate! Glad the new brushes are working for you and good to hear progress still being made on the house - the real never-ending project!

Good work sounding out the printer difficulties too. Hope you keep it onside and put it to work soon!

Edge highlights on the BAs are brilliant. Got a real old school 'Eavy Metal feel to them. And the shoulder mounted heavy weapons will forever be a classic. Looking forward to seeing them finished and based!

Thanks Yorkright, I can recommend the GSW range, their triangular handles seem to be moving me up the brush and helping with control somehow too. Take the plunge!
youwashock wrote:Ready to face down Ghazghkull in a 2nd edition battle report, they are!

Yep, I need to get some polystyrene hills and balls with spikes for them to fight over

So the printer has done a few bits for minis now. I was missing a Narthecium so have printed one and a few shoulder pads using my honed in settings. The Quality isn’t too bad, despite having visible lines I’ve managed to smooth most of the and have a plan to deal with the rest using polyurethane varnish. If I ever get round to priming anything I’ll take some picks. I’m currently having levelling issues which took up a good bit of my hobby time tonight. Still not back to where it needs to be but I’m close now.

I slapped some more paint on the Blood Angela once I’d gotten tired of chasing levels. The iron bits got touched up with Leadbelcher and highlighted with Stormhost Silver and the Golds got touched up with Retributor Armour and Liberator. Sadly I succumbed to the hayfever eyes and called it a night.

I’m happy how they’re coming out, I think they already look better than the previous lot. I need to get on with their bases as there’s not much else to do on them now. It’s mainly just the gems and lenses which will be green to match the rest of the squad.
Thanks for looking !

Thanks Viterbi, I’m hoping to start cranking stuff out soon, the problem is there’s too much choice!

It’s been a pretty busy few weeks but I finally managed to get a decent amount of painting in tonight. I was on a it of a roll so I just continued with the 4 Blood Angels until they were done. In fairness there wasn’t much left, mostly transfers, details and basing. As my basing material had run out I mixed up some more using a turquoise emulsion sampler I bought a while back. It doesn’t match hawk turquoise that well, but it seems to work after an Agrax wash and the hawk dry brush. It seems I had t mixed the sand in too we’ll as the first base in particular ended up with too much paint and a bit smooth as a result. Good enough for government work though! The most time was spent on the green bits like gems and lenses. They came out ok I think, not my best but decent. I also spent a bit of time tarting up the banners, I still love the company banner 20+ years on! They both got a shade around the edges of the colour blocks and a highlight on the black. I’ll get some better photos when i get the chance, but here they are finally!

After I finished I realised that I’d put too much black in my palette it remembered that I had t painted the rims on the last bunch of Orks I did, so here they are too;

It feels good to get those projects off the desk at long last. Next up will be washing my Elves, then my daughter has requested that I do the Land Speeder, so that’ll be another long project no doubt! Thanks for sticking with it on the long journey!

Yorkright wrote: Wonderful work you’ve done on those blood angels, Dante would be proud.

Cheers Yorkright, I was just thinking earlier what characters I’m missing, Dante might be a good one to add at some point?

So Mrs gobert didn’t want to watch the F1 with a hangover tonight, so I banished myself to the loft to watch it and got a bit of painting done too. First up was my usual inter-project project of the bulk of my remaining High Elves. Nothing special, just cranking out lots of them, tonight was a blue wash over the silver;

I also lined the profiles on their helmets and the Spearmens belts. I think they’re starting to look more Elven now, even amongst my pile of primed minis.

As I mentioned in a earlier post my daughter has chosen the next project; a Void Panthers Land Speeder. I’m quite looking forward to this one as it’s mini I’ve wanted since the lead version came out back in the day. It’ll be black like all of my other Void Panther vehicles, but I wanted to paint the marines and cockpit lighter, so this will be a 2 stage project. I made a decent start with the cockpit and marines, getting a grey on the cockpit and Zandri dust on their seats. I wanted an off purple for the cockpit, so gave it a druchi violet wash, kinda like the pale blue that Russian planes have, but in purple. The final bit to do was to paint the marines in Retributor Armour;

Sometimes it’s good having a blog, I nearly painted the seats Snakebite Leather, but found the bikers WIP post which told me Zandri! I’m quite liking the purple, gives the effect I wanted, but keeps things on brand so to speak. Just painting the 2 marines and one cockpit should mean decent progress (for me), though next weekend will be a right off as my folks are visiting and 2 weeks later I’m off to watch the F1 in person with 140,000 other people! Can’t wait!

Congrats on finishing of the BAs, gobert. They look great. And good to see the old orks again too! Nice basing work on them too. Reminds me of my old school oval that was 50% rock-hard dirt and 50% ropeburn-inducing buffalo grass.

Speeder is off to a great start! Glad the purple turned out the way you wanted. Really interesting base detail too - are they push moulds?

Huge batch of Elves will look unreal when they are all done. Smart work bundling out the work in small bits.

Exciting things ahead. How nice is it to go outside and see and do things with people - what a weird few years it's been!

Cheer tzurk, I too love seeing the Orks all massed up together! I’ve been hatching a couple of plans too for further expansion of them, but that might be a way off yet. That said I just bought some water effect resin to upgrade their muddy puddles! Their field will be too wet for rope burns! the Speeder base is a Sector Imperialis base from GW. There’s a notch underneath that’s pretty much the perfect size to drill a hole for a flying stand. Looks better than the normal clear base too imho.

Thanks Ragsta, the Elves are very much a long term project. Perhaps if Mrs gobert goes away for a weekend then I might bring them forward and smash through them. That’s not overly likely so it might be the best part of a year to get through them

Yeah! Tell me about it! Their tunics have a lot of white to paint too :(

DIY and family visits have removed most of my hobby time this past couple of weeks, so there’s no update on the Speeder . I’ve not bee completely idle though and have managed to build a few little bits while in listening mode of Skype meetings. First up were the Space Marine Heroes Series 2 Terminators, they were fun to build and look like great minis to boot. Next up I decided to crank through the Series 3 Plague Marines, again cool minis, but the Nurglimgs were so cool! I love those little guys and may have to invest in more of Papas minions to keep my fix of nurglings!

They’ll all be joining the ranks for the Void Panthers, pre and post fall, in due course. The first Company and all those dedicated to their fallen Chapter Master will be wearing Black armour like the bikes and myother CSMs from BSF.

Next I dug out the Venerable Dreadnought from my Start Collecting Space Marines box. Another cool kit that was fun to put together. I’m thinking black for him too, but the name plates will be gold, so he’ll still be suitwbly.bling.

I might need to get more Dreads at some point!

Not right now though, as next I made a start on the Command Squad. I need to scrounge a few bits to finish the off … like heads and shoulder pads. Another fun build but much more involved.

And that was where my evening ended having watch Elmglamd make a Final of a minor football tournament since 1966, with Italy the only side who’s to stop footballl coming home!

Thanks for looking!

It’s a really cool kit, I love all of the names of famous battles on the armour, even if they are ultramarine ones! Sadly the football wasn’t to be and all of the none-sense after has left a bit of a sour taste for me. When will they learn?

Cheers Viterbi, I was admiring the elves on their shelf earlier today. I’m getting quite tempted to ditch the in between projects status and push on with them, but then I see all the other stuff I want to paint! Like those aces SMH minis… I wonder if/when Series 4 will drop?

So it’s been a little while, things have been mad busy, thankfully with lots of good things;a weekend at Silverstone for the F1 (it was a racing incident, but Lewis was always going to get a penalty with how the stewards have been this year), finally getting all of the doors fitted (my dad visited twice to help out) and getting the new lawn seeded (though we ended up letting our builders go first). I finally though got some hobby action in tonight.

I decided to crack on with the Land Speeder, getting most of the basecoats on and getting a Nuln wash over the Retributor, Purple and Leadbelcher. I also smoothed out the cockpit by mixing a drop of purple in to some dawnstone. It’s a school night, so I left it there.

I think she’s starting to come together, or at least the cockpit is.

Thanks for looking

Yeah, I’ve been on a bit of a building kick of late. As for the golds, it’s Retributor Armour, Nuln oil, bring back all the panels to Retributor, then a volumetric (ish) highlight of Liberator Gold with a follow up of Stormhost Silver. Then some bright lights to photo under to get more reflection ! . The dread is quite exciting!
Not Online!!! wrote:Where'd the plague marines go.

They’re in the drawer awaiting priming I’m afraid, it might be a while until they emerge. The gold recipe is above. One extra, I do the volumetric by highlighting where the reflection of my lamps is visible, kinda cheating, but I like it!
Olthannon wrote:Yeah I can only echo everyone else, that gold looks supoib ! Nice work!

Maharg wrote:You've been quite productive during your work meetings, wish I could work from home for some more hobbying time! Good start on the landspeeder, the purple tint in the cockpit suits the army well

Yeah, it’s one of the few perks! Building is about all I can manage though as painting takes too much concentration. I thought the purple would work well, kinda like the teal that the Russians use in their fighters.

That’s probably a sensible idea Steve, I’m already getting nervous about covering them and spraying the whole thing black! I might cry if it ruins the legs!

Sorry to disappoint Jazzy, I’m thinking he’ll be mostly black, though maybe the name plates will be gold. I’ll need to have a good think on that one. Maybe he could be from before the fall?

Cheers Viterbi. The droppers are a pain to sort out, but pretty good once you have. I still always put way too much paint on the palette though

So another weekend passes with not much time for hobby. We actually socialised on Saturday night, which was novel! I might also have convinced a couple of mates to give Blackstone Fortress a go, just need to arrange a date and time… should be easy with 7 kids between the 3 of us, we all have lots of spare time

Whilst watching another epic F1 GP (I so wish Alonso was in a front running car battling Hamilton every race) I managed to get a good bit done on the Land speeder. Got the Retributor done, the Liche purple, the black, the Leadbelcher too. I then decided to have a bit of fun with the details, getting some red and green dials mostly sorted. I just have the white dots and the scorpion green to do on the details.

I should be able to get the armour and purple highlights done next session so that I can mask the cockpit off, then pray and spray!

Thanks for looking and commenting!

I am loving those old school Blood Angels and even more those old 2nd edition Orks! Great memories there. Of course, you have finally done them justice. Mine, like most back in those days I assume, were painted pretty poorly. These guys look great. Also looking forward to seeing this Land Speeder come together. Another classic model with good memories.

Hi Riddle, I’m glad you like the Blood Angels and Orks. I think it’s fair to say that the 2nd Ed BAs and Terminators are what got me hooked on Warhammer. The painting on some models was pretty horrific though! Hopefully the Land Speeder comes together to your liking too!
Not Online!!! wrote:Ohh even more fancy gold leg boys... This time with the other half.

Indeed, they are Fancy legged! I promise I’ll do some Chaos soon for you!
youwashock wrote:Nice work giving the console some flair!

Cheers youwashock… let’s hope when I put the top on and hit it with some black spray I don’t ruin it!
Warboss_Waaazag wrote:I really like the look of this army. Strong, original paint scheme. Good details on the center console.

Thanks Waaazag, I’m glad you like them! They were inspired by ListenToMeWarriors’ Celestial Lions, but I fancied doing something different. The Chapter icon came about after a fellow dakkanaut pointed me towards college football team logos. Another even sculpted me the fancy version of the icon!

So Mrs gobert was out for some culture (ballet and a string quartet in a museum no less!) tonight so I indulged my geek tendencies with a painting session with Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on in the background. I mainly focussed on the armour highlights for the marines getting them ready to be masked off for the spraying black or the hull. I did however indulge in a bit of detail work, adding a readout to the dial as though it was a radar screen and highlighting the green buttons too.

I finished off the session adding the top to the speeder, filling gaps, adding the crew served weapon mount and steps. This was made a bit trickier by having to mask off the cockpit before adding the top section. Still it went together ok and is now ready for a bit of a spray.

I completely forgot fo take photos of the cockpit, so hopefully the spray doesn’t ruin it!

Thanks for looking

Thanks Olthannon, Royalty was certainly a theme I was after.

So hobbytime seems to be coming like buses (nothing for ages the. 2 come at once!) with another session tonight. Earlier in the week I decided I wanted some iconography on the Land Speeder, so I printed a few 8mm sized chapter symbols. I got to sticking them on, but had to shave off the Aquila at the front as the chapter symbol was too crowded. A fresh blade made short work of it and a bit of filing neatened things up. I also slapped one on each side too, sticking one down backwards. In hindsight I should’ve flipped it on the computer as the finish isn’t great, I still might do. I then took her outside for some black primer.

Whilst waiting for the primer to dry I decided fo get on with my High Elves project, spending most of The Return of the King painting all of their skin with the old GW Bronzed Flesh. Most took 2 coats and my fingers were sore by the end from holding the brush! Here’s how they look now (including adding a couple of bits of blue wash that I’d missed on 3 of them!

I’m sure I’ll have missed an ear or two, but they’re coming together slowly. Having finished the archers I couldn’t face the Spearmen, so instead I checked on the Speeder, here’s what I saw post masking tape removal:

I’m pretty chuffed! No major spraying of painted bits. But most importantly those legs and consoles are looking clean! It also looks like the gap filling and Chapter symbol were successful too. I’ll be back to the outside of the Speeder next time.

Thanks for looking

Speeder console is fancy and a nice touch. I'm looking forward to seeing those archers at the ready next to your spears. What do you think of that GreenStuffWorld brush with the finger grip on it? Does it work well for you? I tend to rotate my brushes a lot so I think I wouldn't like it, but I've never tried one of those.

Once thing I did on mine, to add some variation, was I cut the wrists on some and angled the bows a bit to be a little different from their neighbours.

Cheers CaptainWaffle, the details have been fun on the speeder so far. The GSW brushes are pretty nice. the grips have changed how I hold the brush, further away from the tip and it seems fo be for the better. Quite counterintuitively I seem to have better positional control with holding them higher. That could just be the better bristles though! If you mean switching between brushes, I’ve not had a problem swapping back to normal handles. I sometimes rotate as in spin the brushes the triangles limit you to 3 positioned, but I’m ok with that too.

That would look good, but I’m keen to get them done and if the Lord of the Rings trilogy taught me anything it’s that Elves are very coordinated

No progress this week but i forgot to post pics from last weekend. Youngest gobert went to a birthday party (not done those in a while!) and Eldest gobert asked to paint some mini guys together. Who was I to deny my offspring? Here’s the fruit of her labours;

The one on the right she did a while back, the blood splattered one in the middle was this sessions efforts and the one on the left had only just started when we decided to play Space Marine Adventures. I quite like the colour scheme, she has a good eye for them I think. We won the final level of the game, though Brother Frostclaw didn’t manage to escape!

I also did a little painting getting some gold on to the Land Speeder. There’s not as much panel trim as on the bikes so I improvised. The 3D printed chapter icons also got some gold too as did the anti-grav bumper;

I’m keen to get progressing but we have family staying this weekend and the next 2 as well, so it’s going to be limited. If anyone has any more ideas what panels/trim could turn gold I’m all ears, noting there recessed bits at the front will be purple and probably the doors or wing flaps. Anyway, thanks for looking!

I was at a warhammer 8th edition tournament this weekend and one of my opponents was using the old monopose Highelves and they impressed me so much, a good paintjob can really make them standout.

Also kudos on the speeder, it's looking sharp.

No further progress as yet, they’ll get their next step once the Speeder is done. It’s good to hear that I’m not alone in using the monopose Elves. I quite like the highly disciplined look, it has quite an Elvish feel I think. It’ll be great to get them finished after all these years that’s for sure!

Not much progress of late as real life has been busy with Grandparents visiting. Instead I’ve been experimenting with finishes for 3D printed parts, trying filler primer and polyurethane varnish. Both seem good, but the polyurethane needs white spirits for cleaning, so I’m hoping the filler primer works out! Here are the tests before I prime them black;

I did however get a couple of hours last night whilst Mrs gobert collected MIL from the Airport. I finished off the gold bits, then took the plunge on choosing panels to be purple. I also started on the many Leadbelcher bits, but gave up before I finished as my decanted paint ran out. I’ll save finishing that for my next session

I think it’s starting to have a similar feel to my bikes, so I’m happy it’s heading in the right direction, though I’m not sure whether I’ve overdone the number of panels that are purple (the spots behind the vent are also purple. Let me know what you guys think

Thanks for looking!

Evening all, so my printer has been very busy this week. I’ve decided to organise a games night and Blackstone Fortress will be the first game we play, so I bought and am printing the Dragons Rest terrain set to make it easier to spot when a mini is in cover. So far I’m pretty impressed, it’s printing off nicely and the stls are really cool. I’ll probably be needing more filament though, good job Amazon Prime is next day delivery!

As a test run I’ve printed off bases for the complete set of minis. My last post showed some of the tests of different ways to smooth out the printed finish. To be honest there wasn’t much to choose between any of them, but the spray on filler primer was easier than the polyurethane varnish as it didn’t need white spirits to clean up. All of the bases got 2 coats of that, a quick sanding then one coat of black. I had quite a few duplicate bases so distributed them amongst the different squads so hopefully I’ll not have matching bases in the same group.

First up were the de-spiked Traitor Guard squad;

They all came off their original bases pretty easily and I decided to try to use remnants of their slot tabs as pins for them to fit in the new bases. Most ended up with a hole drilled where their foot goes, though a couple had slots cut so I could keep their built in bits of terrain/debris. This squad was a test for the terrain files as I used 3 dry brushes of progressively lighter blues; Enchanted, Hoeth and Space Wolves Grey. For each base I tried to give an area that’s glowing so concentrated on that area a bit more with each dry brush. I then thinned some SW Grey to line some of the triangles. A few of the lower triangles also got blacked out as I liked his Guy from Mid Winter Minis had done his. A black rim and edges where the floor falls away and they were done.

Next up was the Spindle Drones;

They got the same treatment but with Sybarite and Gauss Blaster green replacing the blues. The SW grey was replaced with a mix of Gauss Blaster and Skull White. One of the bases had a bit flat area so it got a few squiggles to the lightest colour.

Overall I’m really pleased how they look. The texture from the printer adds to the look I think, even if the rims are a bit ridged! I’m tempted to do away with the tabs altogether for the next group as it was a real faff getting them to fit, though they might not survive being used in a game if I do. In any case, I’ve chosen the colours I’ll use on the rest of the 25mm bases now and can’t wait to get them all done!

The other thing I’m torn about is whether these guys should add to my running total? It’s been quite a bit of prep, so I’m edging towards adding them on, yeah, why not!?!

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Flinty, the paint on the bases is so easy thanks to the printer . The terrain is already looking really cool, even without paint. I’m gonna need some bigger brushes for drybrushing it all though!

Thanks LTMW, I was always amazed that GW didn’t do sculpted bases and terrain for BSF. Thankfully the internet delivers!
Olthannon wrote:Love those bases Gobert, such a cool idea. That lighting effect looks spot on.

Thanks Olthannon, I’m pretty chuffed how they’re coming out

I spent this evening painting and watching The Defiant Ones on Netflix (it’s amazing how driven these music industry guys are and how good they are at getting the most from other each other!). I decided to stick with trimming the tabs to create pins, and I got better at it with each group. I started with the Ur Ghuls, they got orange bases to go with their orange hands and eyes;

Next were the Poxwalkers, who got a nurgley green colour, for obvious reasons

And finally I did the Chaos Cultists from Escalation, who got a bright green to match their leaders flamer, though I forgot to do him

I haven’t done the light coloured bits along the edges of some triangle like I did the first bunch. Must revisit them when I use the colours again on the bigger bases. The last of the little bases of the second Traitor Guard squad will be pinky purple, they’ll be up next before I move on to the bigger bases (though I still have the ratlings and borewyrms to do I suppose)

Cheers Theo! Hopefully the latest batch match up to the early runners.

After a week away with the kids today was back to normality, with a day of chores. Having gotten them done and the kids to bed it was P&M time. I went more factory like this time and got a whole bunch of minis matched to base first then smashed out new bases for this lot;
Spikey Traitor Guard

Chaos Beastmen

Traitor Commissar

Negavolt Cultists

Firebrand Cultist

Chaos Space Marines

Rogue Psykers

Pretty chuffed with them, especially the Beastmen! That’s most of BSF rebased now, with the explorers being the main lot to rebase now. I think I’ll add a bit more to their bases, maybe some blood splatter? The pink lightning some of the squares have? Two tones? Any other ideas?

Cheers, I love toyed with the silver or gold for the explorers, but in the end I decided to try to relocate the transport tiles. They’re 2-sided tiles, one is turquoise with blood stains and the other a pale green but clean. I think I’ll use those to differentiate the Core set explorers and the Escalation expansion minis, the core set being more battle hardened, so getting the bloody tiles! Both sets also have pink lightning which I’ve tried to replicate. So far I’ve not completed 2 of the Escalation minis, so I’ll wait to do their bases, but here are the Core set explorers;

I think they turned out pretty well and the match the tile reasonably too. To finish the core set I only have Obsidius Mallex to do, I need to prime a larger base for him though

Thanks for looking

As others have noted, the outcome of your work on these bases is striking, very high-quality painting. What I very much appreciate is your showing the colors you used to create your layering and highlighting effects. I have a poor eye for color combination, and even trying to use an artist's 'color wheel' does not help me a great deal (Hulk SMASH!!!!!). In many cases, the colors you have combined are not intuitively complimentary- until one sees the finished result.

Rock on!

Hi Meer_Cat, I’m glad you liked having the paints behind the minis. It was a quick way of documenting what I’d done on each in case I wanted to repeat any of the colours. It came in very handy for the explorers. As for combining them I store my paints in a rack. To help spot highlight colours they’re in rainbow order with lighter colours usually at the transition points. Cheating with the GW paint app helps too! The colour wheel does get used sometimes, either opposites or triangles depending what I feel like doing!

Olthannon wrote:Those colours are so cool, nice to see all the groups together. They all turned out great!

Is there one you are particularly happy with?

Thanks Olthannon, probably the explorers are my favourites, but I like how they’ve all come out really. The only ones I’m a bit disappointed with are the purple bases Traitor guard and the blue on the commissars base.

No painting updates today or tonight, but thanks for all the comments, spurring me on to more painting. In other hobby news a mate is coming round tonight to give BSF a go over a couple of beers. My Printer has been churning out terrain, but I’ve not had the time to prep it for priming let alone paint it. I’m really excited how good it looks already, and will try to get an action photo or 2 even if the terrain is naked!

So I totally forgot to take a photo of the Blackstone Fortress game on progress. We had fun and all of our characters managed to survive the first expedition, though it was close a couple of times! We’re trying to get another evening planned, so I’m looking forward to that.

Another Sunday night, another Grand Prix to watch whilst painting (another good race, with plenty of controversy). I decide to crack on with the Land Speeder,l; finishing off the Leadbelcher basecoat, tidied the black up a bit, then hit it with the Nuln Oil wash. Instead of the usual bright golds on the underside and bumper I thought it’s be nice to do them a bit darker, so just drybrushed them for a much duller finish. The top side bits kept the full on shine, getting proper Retributor coats and that’s where I left it for tonight;

It’s hard to see the progress, but it’s there I promise! The gold looks like it might need another coat before highlights I think, but the full metal on the underside is looking nice. I might see about some oily streaks down there too? I actually gave the black a coat of Nuln oil to take some of the sheen off the Vallejo black, sadly it ended up patchy so I’ll have to redo all of the black.

In other news I’m considering an airbrush to speed up basecoating. As that’s all I’m doing quietness and cheapness are my main considerations. For the quietness I’ve been looking at battery powered ones. Has anyone sampled one or could recommend one?

Thanks for looking

PS- has anyone been having Dakka load slowly today/yesterday? It took an age to load the images from the gallery

Blackstone Fortress is looking good, as is the Land Speeder. Can't help with the airbrush (still have one and its compressor in its original box from... hmmm... years ago now...). Dakka has been slow/unresponsive today. Happened a couple of weeks back as well. It's not just you!
Keep up the good work!

Look forward to seeing the end result on that.

And yes, I’ve experienced some slowdown with Dakka recently too - almost had me painting my pile in frustration lol

Thanks Arakasi, I decided to take the plunge on a cheapo battery powered airbrush. So far all I can tell you is that it’s very quiet, I’ll have no concerns about waking up the kids. That said, now I’ve done some research I think I might need to set up some sort of extraction mechanism to use it in the loft. Still it’s basically the size of a small spray can so it’ll be easy to take it outside. Maybe soon I’ll slip some paint in it an lenses how it performs. I have a load of Panthers primed ready for their base coats, so they could be a good test.

Lol! Dakka would have to slow for quite some time to make a dent in my pile! As for the vehicles, I can’t recall how I came to black, but all gold bikes didn’t appeal to me, and it worked so now all vehicles will be black!

I made some decent progress last night in the speeder; highlighting the golds (Retributor base, Liberator then Stormhost silver highlights) getting a nice shine on the Panther icons. Then it was the slog of covering all of the black again after my failed Nuln oil experiment. A couple of layers went down on the purple spots and I decided to carry on and do the purple edge highlighting on the black;

I think I went a bit thick and wobbly in places so I’ll have to tidy that up before the grey highlight. It feels like it’s coming together now, which is cool for a project that’s gone on for quite a while now! I might get some more done tonight too since Mrs gobert isn’t interested in watching the Michael Schumacher documentary with me

Thanks for looking!

Sorry CB. I missed your comment from the last post. To be honest, the more I think about using the airbrush, the more I reckon I’ll end up using it outside too, but no wires should help!
youwashock wrote:Getting there, man. It's looking real good.

Yeah, I’ve been wanting one of these since I first saw the old metal flying coffins. I feel like I’m nearing the final push now!
Olthannon wrote:Lovely stuff Gobert! Those purple highlights look really cool, very blade runner!

Cheers Olthannon, I hadn’t thought of them being blade runner esque. I keep thinking I should do some Dark Eldar doing this style of highlights!

Speaking of highlights i finished up the highlights in the black tonight. First I tidied up the purple, narrowing the liche purple highlights by going back over with some of the black. That got them much crisper looking I think. Then I did some highlights on the bits that are actually purple, before finishing up with a highlight of Dawnstone (yet again I had to go back through old posts for the recipe!).

Not looking too shabby I feel, and more importantly; not much left to do! Some of the Leadbelcher bits need highlights, but not many now. I forgot to highlight the heavy bolter, so that’ll be next. Then it’ll be picking out bits that’ll be green; pipes, buttons, screens etc. There might be a few red bits too plus some parchment to do and the model will be done. I should probably get on with priming the base too!

Thanks for looking and the comments!

Landspeeder is coming along nicely. I have a soft spot for that model as the first 40k vehicle i ever painted (as Space Wolf). Looking forward to seeing it all put together; the gold marine crew should draw the eye.

With airbrushing, whether inside or outside I urge a quality respirator mask. For indoors, a spray booth helps- that can be vented out a window for extra effectiveness.

A bit more has been done, not that any of it is immediately obvious! Mainly further highlighting on the black including the Heavy Bolter. I also did the shoulder icons on the pilot and gunner, so it’s pretty much just fun little details to do now

I really must get priming that base! Speaking of priming, the Blackstone Fortress terrain is ready for priming;

Filler Primer today they sand, polyurethane on the bits that are rocks/bones/metal to remove the print lines on them a bit more before a black primer all round

Ha! Yeah and the nearby Chaos Cultists managed to impale their torsos on some really long spikes! The BSF stuff is quite daunting, but it’ll mostly be dry brushing, I just need to figure out a good way of doing it on such large pieces. I might need to source some make up brushes!

Viterbi wrote:Landspeeder is looking great, the purple highlights on the black look so cool! And man, that's a lot of BSF terrain

Cheers Viterbi, I think the purple on here is better than my bikes from last year. The BSF terrain will be next on my to do list I think
Ragsta wrote:The highlighting has really pulled that speeder together, I’ll admit I was worried about the mass of black initially. It’s looking pretty darn neat already! But of course only one…?

Thanks Ragsta, the plain black is a bit boring, though I do sometimes wonder if the purple is a bit Dark Eldar! And shush about getting more… *looks at list of stls he’s downloaded

This past week I’ve been full of this cold/flu that’s doing the rounds in the UK (it even made the bbc website!) so I’ve been feeling unable to do much hobbywise. On the plus side the COVID test was negative! All I could muster was priming the BSF terrain and testing the airbrush. The BSF stuff was first with the filler primer;

I was quite impatient so I slapped on the polyurethane shortly after the filler primer. I did though wait 24 hrs after that before spraying the lot black;

The polyurethane did take the edge of some of the print lines, but not by much. It has however bubbled up in places so I’ll either have to do some prep work or paint on some rust depending on the location of the bubbles! The loft also now stinks of spray paint fumes as it was quite a lot of paint (1.5 cans each of filler and black!). Still it looks pretty cool already I think!

I also gave a quick trial run on the airbrush. I primarily wanted it to speed up basecoating and I think it does that pretty well:

The test dude in the middle went pretty well, so I got the second half of their second Tactical squad. It was a bit fiddly, but I’m pretty happy with the results. Certainly it was quick (though maybe not if you factor in the cleaning!) no the coat was much smoother than I’d have managed with a brush! Coverage wasn’t as good as I’d have liked, but I can get the bits I missed with a brush quite easily. Cleaning afterwards was a bit hard given how thick Retributor is and how quickly it likes to dry. I’ll probably pre mix some ready for my next attempt to see if that’s any better.

Sorry for the dull post, maybe something more interesting next time? Thanks for looking anyways!

Airbrush definitely helps with priming. I should play around more with mine as well.

Just remember to use a quality respirator, especially with the polyurethane varnish.

Thanks Not Online!!! It’s the complete core set, they did stuff for the expansions as well which I might have to look in to at some point. Not that Mrs gobert will be happy!

As mentioned above papa is still with me, so I’ve not done a lot. I started basing a few more BSF minis, but only got as far as taking them off their old bases. I did though manage to get the base coats done on the green, red and yellow bits for the land speeder,

I’m particularly enjoying and liking how the knobs, buttons and screens are coming out

The base is done too but is looking a bit bland so I might have to add something to it, maybe add some height?

Thanks for looking

Ha! Everyone encouraging me to get more speeders! My next fast attack will be an attack bike which came in an eBay lot, it needs a decent amount of work first as it’s a bit broken and wonkily put together!

We’ve been away this weekend so I only managed an hour or so tonight. That was enough to modify the base to make it a bit more interesting. I don’t know why I didn’t do this from the off as all of the smaller bases I have from Sector Imperialis were modified in some way. This one was such a big boring paved road with some metal strips and a manhole cover and just looked sooo dull! Even without paint it looks loads better.

As buttons and screens and parchment don’t need much paint I also pretty much finished the speeder and glued all of the bits together;

I need to wait for the PVA to dry on the base before I can paint that again. I think it looks a tad more interesting now it has a few extra bits on it and it shouldn’t take too lon to paint whilst also being a good practice for the display board

Thanks for looking!

It’s one heck of a cold isn’t it!?! Mine has just about passed now, hopefully yours has too Olthannon. Hopefully the finished product satisfies too!

Well, it’s been a marathon not a sprint, but the speeder I started back at the end of June is finally finished! Ok so there were a few detours along the way that took up hobby time, but it’s been a labour of love. I’ve wanted a Land Speeder some way back when the 2nd Ed version showed up in White Dwarf and I finally have one painted! Hope you all like it;

If only took an hour or so to finish the base. It was basecoated with dawnstone, a liberal dry brush of Administratum Grey then White. Bits of the road got black Templar contrast and the other Basilicanum Grey (I think I prefer the latter for this task) the metal bits got Lead Belcher and the eagle a gold. I then gave it all a heavy Agrax wash and called it done.

I was hoping to get a session in during the week this week but it’s been a real at work and home so I want up for much other than sofa and tv. Work picked up on Friday so feeling a bit better about that and the building works finally came to an end as well after just over a year. I now have along most of dig tasks to do, so my hobby time might be limited some more in the coming weeks

Thanks for looking!

Yeah, I’m glad I did the duller underside, thanks for spotting it! Part of me thinks the top is a bit too purple, but I still like how it looks. Oh, and to be clear the VPs ride for both sides!

Tonight was another F1 race so I stayed up way too late watching and doing a bit of BSF terrain painting. Nothing too exciting yet, just a few base colours. The steel is Leadbelcher with iron breaker and stormhost dry brushing. The gold is Retributor, the reactors old enchanted blue, cables in sybarite green and the bone is oak brown. The red is a heavy wash of thinned Khorne red (a bit too heavy as it’s pooled horribly in places

When the opposition rolls into the fight bedecked head to toe in gold and purple there’s really no question who they think is the superior force.

Nice! It's an impressive looking force. I like the decision to use black as the primary vehicle color. I've never been successful trying to get a metallic scheme like that to play out across something vehicle sized. Keep up the good work!

That's a very striking force right there. The colour scheme on the marines stands out from the crowd and works nicely, and the black on the vehicles is a great complement to it.

Excellent force! I really like the scheme, the metallic bodies are a great contrast to the purple where both support each other without conflicting. You've turned two uncommon colors into a solid pairing, impressive work

The basing is fantastic, cluttered city streets with some added details to to stand out from the standard set, the speeder especially looks like it's skimming low through the ruins.

Can't wait to see more

The boys in gold are looking gab all together.

The landspeeder brings back happy memories of painting my black templar version. Hours and hours crouched over my painting desk, only to step back and see that it basically looked the same from 3 foot away as when I had primed it!! Yours looks ace with purple and gold breaking it all up

Thanks for sharing

Thanks Ezki, I’ve enjoyed how the Speeder has come out and avoid centre piece (for the moment) for the army.

Hehe! Yeah, they do have a bit of a superiority complex! Could be their III Legion background coming through perhaps

Cheers LTMW, the shadows were fun to play with, getting a bit of atmosphere without putting the Marines in the dark!

Thanks Cap’ Facebeard, and thanks for spotting the lights, a tradition that goes back to early Terran civilisation

Thanks ValhallanWinter. Good and purple have become a bit of a thing for me since coming back to the hobby a couple of years ago. I can’t seem to shake it! I think it helps the Panthers look pretty regal which is why I chose it. I’m glad you like the bases, they started with the Space Marine Heroes bases and I’ve been throwing bits of Sector Imperialis lately too. Dry brush, contrast and washes do the rest for me. Hopefully it translates well when I paint their shelf.

Thanks igtr. I know what you mean in the painting of black, it looked primed for quite a while, but the purple and gold helped remedy that!

Well papa nurgle has been taking up residence in casa gobert. I was the week before I went away, then I caught something when I got back and I still feel like death a week later! I had a day off last week and had hoped smash a good painting session, but all I could muster was to lay on the sofa and watch Fear The Walking Dead S6.

My work trip was the first in about 20months and was to Germany, so had all the joy of lost COVID travel! I did have a few hours alone in the hotel room so took advantage by bringing my Indomitus Necrons with me to build. Between bouts of illness I managed to assemble all of the rest of the Necrons;

I’m tempted to go all John Prins on them and see how close to finished I can get them over Christmas! To aid projects like this I splashed out on a portable spray booth with an extractor fan. To see how noisy it was I decided to basecoat the Void Panthers Assault Squad;

This wasn’t as straightforward as the Tactical Marines I did a few weeks back, but that was because I hadn’t put the needle back in the right spot. Once I figured that out things went smoothly and I even figured out how to use the end stop to get a nice wide spray pattern for basecoating! That’ll come in handy for the Necrons at Christmas! All in though it took about 1hr to basecoat all these marines including airbrush fiddling and cleaning, so a major time saver. I can’t wait to get some base colours down on some Panthers and try a Nuln oil wash through the airbrush.

Thanks for looking

Thanks Not Online, they’ll take a while, as with all my painting!

Not much to report on as I’ve still been under the weather, I’ve decided to push through and groan about it like and old man though! This evening was spent watching the F1 (not worth staying up for, I should e gone to bed after lap 1!) and painting Blackstone Fortress bits. I started with finishing the last of the bases for my completed minis;

Then I did some work on terrain. I tried my new make up brushes on this bunch to get the bone and stone effects. Pretty effective is my verdict and certainly faster than my normal drybrush. I used up a fair bit of paint though!

These are most of the non-Blackstone material pieces, the rest will mostly just be dry brushes turquoise/blue/green with a bit of pink maybe. Once I’ve done the base colours, wash and highlights on these they’ll get OSL like dry brush too to match the floor tiles they belong to.

Thanks for looking

The Red Hobbit wrote:I'm a big fan of the Dragon's Rest BSF terrain, fits in really nice on the board and was really easy to paint using a heavy dry brush method.

2 comment was well I’m honoured :thumsup: I played a game with it unpainted and yeah, it fits well and helps understand who’s in cover much easier.

Another Sunday, another GP painting session. This weekends F1 was a much more entertaining affair. Controversy galore and great driving from the 2 title protagonists. I decided to push on with the BSF terrain, getting all of the block colours down, doing some dry brush on the skull and finished with a heavy Agrax wash all over. It’s starting to look like real terrain, and is pretty much ready for the dry brush OSL stages now. I guess that’ll be several sessions worth given I don’t want my wrist to fall off! One of the barricades looked to have Necron pillars in it, so I painted that up to match my Necrons .

Thanks for all the comments and stopping by to look at this pic :thumsup:

Not Online!!! wrote:Nice terrain you got going there. Do you own a table or are attempting to create one?

Thanks Not Online, the terrain all matches up with the Blackstone Fortress tiles. They match the line of sight blocking lines on the tiles. There’s a load of corridor pieces too. Ultimately I plan to have a multi-level display in my miniatures shelving using the tiles and the terrain. Kind of like the classic Mike McVey Warhammer Quest Diorama but not quite as good and still having the stuff usable for games.

Thanks IGtR, it’s a really cool set of stls. I should probably get the packs for the expansions too. That can be a project for next.
The Red Hobbit wrote:Nice work on the terrain, really like the brass motifs, I painted most of mine a gloomy twilight color but I really like what you've put together so far!

Thanks Red Hobbit, I’ll be borrowing some of the Midwinter Minis techniques when I apply the OSL. I want to try to match some of the feel of the tiles. I though Guy held back on the brightness of some bits so mine will have the base materials more visible and brighter OSL type effect. I’m looking forward to slapping on the Pink lightning and blood splatters!

No painting update just yet, though I did spend a dull meeting sorting out the terrain in to piles according to the OSL colours I’ll be using. Some of those will be my project whilst watching the Qatar GP on Sunday night. In the week my latest eBay purchase arrived, I bought it mainly for my Indomitus Marines who will be Dark Angels and I wanted some DA bits for them. I thought the pile was only DA veterans, but it turns out there were lots of other useful bits in there too; the odd smattering of Chaos Warrior/Marine bits, Deathwatch bits and a load of Imperial Guard bits (possibly Tempestus Scions). I also seem to have acquired a load of Devastator legs that will come in handy for my Panthers and a whole squad worth of Sanguinius Guard less their backpacks. I reckon I could print some of those anyway. So what I thought would be a decent price for a much of DA bits turned out to be a great haul of bits! The only disappointment was there were very few helmeted heads!

Thanks for all the comments, progress pics on Sunday probably.

Thanks brushcommando, the Ambull is a really cool mini, hopefully you’ll like the latest additions to my BSF collection.

Another late Sunday night watching Formula 1 and decent painting session. The race was ok, and the next couple will be interesting, but I really enjoyed the OSL dry brushing on the terrain. Even better is they seem to be a decent match for the tiles, so I’m pretty chuffed. It’s late so I’ll just post the best pics now and add the rest tomorrow;

The makeup brushes are working well with this technique, I can’t wait to get on with some of the other pieces!

Outstanding job with the blue and purple matching each side of the terrain, I went for a quick approach and layered purple, blue, white over the entire thing but seeing how you did it is making me consider painting a spare.

Ha, thanks Olthannon, but I promise there was nothing complicated on these, lots of dry brushing on the main colours. The lightning wasn’t any harder, if you look in the gallery they’re not quite a nice as they look in the post. Still dead simple though; I started with dry brushing abut more around the area I wanted the lightning (I’d maybe skip this on a mini though). Next i went with a thinned down Fire Dragon Crimson (a dead old Citadel paint) not quite to a wash consistency but thinner than contrast, with that I did a wide line following the edges of the triangles on the terrain. I then added 50:50 white in the thinned Crimson and followed the first line but a bit narrower. I finished with adding some of the previous mix to some white and picking out a few corners and the dots at the peaks of the terrain. See simple!

Thanks Red Hobbit, I wanted them to match as well as I could manage. The practicing on the bases helped get decent colour matches too! In fact If you look for the pics of the bases over the past couple of pages they show the colours I used. Your stuff looks pretty cool from the pics in your gallery too, but if you have a spare, why not give it a go!

Thanks for all the kind comments on the terrain, it’s a really cool set and frankly did most of the hard work for me. I’ve made a start on the rest, of which there’s a LOT! Quite a few pieces have only a subtle colour so I went up and mixed some dark grey and turquoise together the do that and batch dry brushed all of the remaining pieces. I probably should’ve spent more time making sure there was a better coverage of the black, but I was too keen to get cracking so only patched up bits where it was obvious. I then started the OSL on a few pieces that will end up with the pale turquoise finish. That was a good few hours of dry brush action so called it quits here

It’s a bit too turquoise right now but hopefully when I add the white it’ll get closer to the tiles. Plus I think it’s the pink and lightning that worked so well on the first batch to tie them in with the boards.

Sorry for the dull update, but thanks for looking

I wouldn't say it's a dull update, sometimes it's good to see the process and how the look of the thing changes as it progresses.

Yep, there sure is! It’s a bit too daunting to pick up mid week, glad you liked the in progress pics

Thanks Flinty, luck helped a fair bit! Hopefully the remainder don’t end up too different!
Olthannon wrote:Nout dull about the update, in fact it has a healthy glow! Looks like a decent set (of terrain), good luck!

Ha! I see what you did there Olthannon!

We had our sofas and carpets cleaned today, so nowhere to sit but the office tonight. Rather than turn my laptop back on I thought I’d sneak in some hobbygime. As I mentioned above, the terrain was too much to pick up mid week, so I decided to stay up late partially fixing my attack bike. It was really shoddily assembled, with way too much poly cement! Thankfully I could mostly get it apart, the gunners torso and right arms being the main casualties. I think I can rescue them with a replacement shoulder and some GS though. I’m not sure what size base to use for it, poss a 60mm round?

I also found a couple of odd backpacks in my bits haul, but I’ve no idea what kit they’re from. Do any of you guys know?

Thanks for looking

The backpacks are Grey Knight interceptor backpacks from the strike team kit. They're fancy jump packs that let you teleport. GW actually doesn't provide the attack bike with a base, but they are most commonly based on 60mm. I remember the Battle for Vedros version of the attack bike kit had it on a 60mm round, and I think the standalone bike was on one of the new ovals, so I would say it's probably a safe bet that's still the "correct" base size. Hope this helps.

Edit: Also, for what it's worth, if you get any rhino-based kit and don't assemble the tank commander, you can use the torso and gunner arms from that sprue as a replacement for the attack bike's.

2nd Edit: Looked it up. I was wrong, attack bike went on an 80mm base.

I do not envy you having taken that ebay rescue bike to bits Gobert, but it looks like you have done a thorough job.

Totally agree with basing it as well, smaller vehicles like the GSC Ridgerunner and Primaris Marine Mario trike look much better on a large oval, no idea what size the attack bike would look best on though.

Thank brushcommando! That backpack was bugging me as I’d seen it on here before, a teleportation jump pack sounds pretty awesome to me. As for the attack bike base I’ve found a 100mm Sector Imperialis inspired base stl that I can scale to 80mm to see what that looks like. I’ll fire up the printer tomorrow to find out. Cheers!

Nice bases sofar.

That’s what I thought but the wheels all hang over the edges so I’m going to try 80 or 70mm

Yeah, it was one of those low ball bids you don't expect to win but sometimes do! It’s made me question buying pre-“loved” vehicles in the future! Still I’m getting there and it looks a whole load better now than when I started.

It’s another F1 weekend so hobby time whilst watching Quali was on the cards tonight. Sadly youngest daughter was up with ear ache so I lost a good hour or 2 to that. She seems ok and eventually managed to get back to sleep.

Anyway, back on topic; I carried on with the Attack Bike eBay Rescue project instead of BSF terrain. I’d made a cast of a Heavy Bolter magazine from a Chaos HB I found in my recent bits haul. It came out pretty well so I trimmed and filed its imperfections then got out the GS/milliput to fill in the gaps for mounting the standard ammo can, which turned out pretty well for someone a useless at Sculpting as me! So to capitalise on that success I repaired the top of the gunners hips that had been damaged taking him apart. That wasn’t quite as easy, and ended up a bit shoddy, but it should be hard to spot when he’s done. I finished up the session trying to get this arms in to roughly the right position with reasonable success.

Once I’d done those bits Quali was over so I dived in to my PCs stash of stls and sliced up a few shoulder pads and helmets to go with the base. With the setting I’m using they’ll take 12 hrs so I’ll set them going first thing in the morning.

Thanks for looking

Thanks Viterbi, it’s been quite fun on the most part. My daughter seems ok this morning, so hopefully it’s passed.

With it being so late last night I forgot that I played some Space Marine Adventures with my eldest on Friday night. We tried our hands at a campaign where you play the levels one after the other. We made it through Level 1 easy enough, but the Necrons all spawned around the console and then Space Wolf struggled to activate the console (you need a 6) so only the Ultramarine managed to get out so we lost. It was probably for the best as my daughter was starting to get tired. Here’s a pic of the first level

Yeah it’s been a bit of a doozey alright! The filler on the gun cleaned up ok so I called it done. Fingers crossed the little one is through it now.

Well, I had grand plans to do lots of hobby this evening, but ing hell! What a crazy race the F1 turned out to be! I was pretty much glued to the screen for the duration. Luckily I didn’t literally glue myself to anything, instead I finished the bike and cleaned up some 3d printed bits.

The gunner got a printed assault squad shoulder pad, though I’m not in love with it as the cross isn’t very pronounced. The bike also got an 80mm Sector Imperialis like base (thanks brushcommando, that seems to be the right size!) which has the opposite problem to the shoulder pad in that all of the detail is about 2-3 times as pronounced as the official ones. I might have to reprint it if I can slice the top off on my computer and make it thinner. I also trimmed and fitted the purity seals, one on each marine and one on their mount. I think they look like they might be flapping in the wind, what do you think?

Thanks for looking

I agree with youwashock, a bit of sand or other basing material will get in all the nooks and crannies and it'll look great.

Ha! Yeah I had whiskey soaked cotton wool in my ears as a little’un. Whilst the rescues can be time consuming this one has been quite fun and rewarding see how well it looks. Sadly my printer shoulder pads look shoddy once primed so I need to sort that out. Hopefully I’ve got enough pads now.

I looked up the Dakka Rescue Shelter thread, thanks for the tip! I rarely lurk outside of the P&M blogs section so I doubt I’d have found it otherwise. Cheers

No progrsss on the bike this week, but I picked up the dry brushes tonight and got on with the Blackstone Fortress terrain I printed. Nothing special on these ones just dry brushes OSL in light turquoise with more and more white added to bring it up to a bit of a glow.

This one’s probably the most disappointing print as the game tile has a big skull on it, but the print is just a bunch of teeth.
The light source on this one’s supposed to be coming from the floor, but it’s a bit hard to tell… probably because i forgot at one point and went the other way!

This one surprised me how well it matched the tile, all the others are either a bit too blue or green.

The last one seems a bit of a compromise, missing some of the details like the drill, but it’d be pretty hard to play on if it were present

Doing these 4 was much more manageable than the whole lot, so I’ll continue this way, pulling a batch out and getting them done. Hopefully I’ll be able to match the colours better doing them together if they match.

Whilst putting the minis away I also had a play too

So there you go, quite a picture dump. There’ll probably be more of the same tonight as I paint while I watch the F1 Championship decider (let’s hope for clean shenanigans!).

Thanks for looking

Sorry to hear you missed out on Ascension, it has some cool minis, in the cultists bunch. I managed to get all of the expansions apart from No Respite, but I managed to snag all of the minis I need should I ever get to play it.

Speaking of which I had a hankering to paint some black Marines, and the No Respite Plague Marines we’re looking at me funny. Not much progress as I was engrossed in the F1 Highlights (talk about unnecessarily controversial!) but painting good also takes ages, so here you go;

I do love the look of a Black Legion Plague Marine (Bringer of Decay?). In my Head Cannon, my Black Legion Marines aren’t really Black Legion, but instead are Fallen Void Panthers. Being Nurgle though I’ll add some gribbly bits, hence the test marine with Nihilakh Oxide on his Storm Shield. I’m not sure whether to go straight to the nihilakh or do an Agrax first, so he has another bit with Agrax on first

Short post tonight but thanks for looking!

Ack, meant to say missed out on the 2nd one Escalation. But it's a real bummer since the 3rd main expansion Ascension relies heavily on items from Escalation. I was hoping GW would reprint it but that's very unlikely considering their current release schedule. I too meant Escalation! yes, it’s pretty sad that most of the other expansions rely on Escalation. If you look on the right places you might find the rules and cards for download…. As for the cultists I think they’re part of the new Space Marine Adventures game.

Not much painting, just done brown basecoats on 2 of the plague marines’ metal bits ready for some rustiness. I really came out to confess to buying more minis… I think I have a problem, but the Void Panthers’ First Company now have a Land Raider. In my defence it was about £10 under discounted retail price! Maybe next year I’ll be good?

Thanks Captain, I’ll aim for a similar standard on this page too!

So my Land Raider arrived and I got to building it, though it’ll be a slow build as I’ve decided to paint the interior, so double priming and some masking will be required. I’m tempted to buck the trend of black vehicles and do this one on gold, with the 1st company switching colour schemes on vehicles as well as armour. We’ll see, but either way I’ll use the pale purple-grey interior that I used on the land speeder. I don’t take a pic as I only glued 4 pieces together.

I do have a few pics of the Plague Marines who have had decent progress made on them. I found a good rust tutorial and got an effect that I’m pretty happy with, here are the steps;
1 - Layer Dark Oak
2 - Stipple Bestial Brown liberally

3 - Stipple Wild Rider Red

4 - Sfipple Fire Dragon Bright lightly

5 - Stipple Zandri Dust very lightly

6 - wash with Agrax
7 - Heavy dry brush with Lead Belcher

It doesn’t seem to look as good in the pics as real life, but that probably be chainmail dominating this view and not taking it as well as the weapons and blades. I’ll go back and tidy the gold next, then block out the fleshy parts before I get on with the armour.

Thanks for looking!

Good start on the Plague Marines! Always love me some rust effects.
Sometimes it's hard to get them to show in the pictures, but I think you pulled off the effect well.
I have to check that tutorial out and give it a go!

Looking forward to the Land Raider!
Painting the interior will be quite a task (if I remember correctly how the interior looked), but it will bring that extra bit of coolness to the beast of a tank.

Thanks youwashock, they’re really fun to do, just slapping on the paint without too much care at the moment!
brushcommando wrote:Death guard are looking ...sick! (cue drum and cymbal flourish) Are you going with black legion plague marines?

good dad joke, it has to be done, and is usually done by me! Yeah, they’ll be Black Legion Plague Marines, so they’ll tie in with the whole of my Chaos collection.
Yorkright wrote:I’m always up for some Deathguard and these are looking good Gobert. Thanks for sharing your process.

I can’t claim it as my process, but it’s dead simple and I had all the paints pretty much!

Thanks Ezki, your rusty Ork gubbins somewhat gave me the idea to rust these boys up, good luck trying the tutorial, it might be a bit basic for you I wonder if I could fashion a tiny light for the interior so it can be seen other than these WIP shots! It’s a pretty cool model, though I can tell that I’ll need to sort gaps as it looks like it was produced on a less refined moulding machine, a bit like the terrain I have.

The kids are off school, but they’re in holiday club so I can do chores before Christmas… I had an hour to kill between chores this morning so the Plague Marines got some more love. I tidied up the gold areas and decided the flies should be gold. Just about finished washing with Agrax and a bit of Nihilakh Oxide on rivets and flies

1 - layer a mix of Retributor Armour and Gehenna’s gold (mix varies as it’s Nurgle!)

2 - wash Agrax Earthshade
3 - pin wash Nihilakh Oxide on rivets and flies

I think I’ll do a very light dry brush of Leadbelcher and Gehenna’s gold, but leave them mostly dark

You can probably tell with the frequency of updates that I’m enjoying these guys! Hopefully there’ll be more through the week

Thanks for looking and the comments

Basic techniques are the best techniques. The way I usually do most of the rust involves three different shades of brown, one shade of orange and a sponge. One can never learn enough different rust techniques!

A tiny light inside the Land Raider would be a marvellous idea!
Sorry to hear about the possible gaps though.

That’s true, 1 down, lots to go for me then! I also now need to find and make a light for the interior! I also need to figure out a way to have tighten the hinge on the assault ramp as the bottoms door keeps flopping down. Has anyone reading this done an opening land raider that has any advice on the ramp hinge?

Another post so soon! I got the gold finished and looking nice and dull, through a dry brush of Gehenna’s gold the Leadbelcher. It worked surprisingly well at taking the gold down a notch;

4 - light dry brush Gehenna’s gold
5 - patchy light dry brush of Leadbelcher

I also made decent progress on the fleshy bits, getting a base down with a mix of skull white and bleached bone, over which I threw some Fyreslayer contrast paint. Any bones got a Zandri dust starter and Guilliman flesh contrast.

After that I decided to crack on with the land raider whilst the contrast dried. It’s starting to take shape and it’s impressively large!

If I’m to paint and illuminate the interior I need to figure out how to stiffen the hinge on the ramp and source a light. Surely Amazon will have an LED and coin battery combination that I can hide under a hatch? One thing I now realise on the model is that the side doors aren’t for marines to exit, one seems to be an entrance and the other a storage compartment with UDTs on the other side. Who knew! No idea how I’d make those doors openable, will have a think about that one!

Thanks for looking and the comments!

Really liking the take on the Black Plague marines, it is nice when you get a tutorial (like the rust one) to get your teeth into.

I wonder if a (some?) small magnet(s) on the assault ramps would help to keep it in place (rather than fiddling with the ramp hinge...)

Thanks, LTMW. I’ve wanted Black Plague Marines since I first saw some and these have been thoroughly enjoyable so far!
Guardling wrote:The nurgly Bois are looking good, the different scheme is working well on them

Thanks Guardling, I’ve never been a massive fan of the dingy green Death Guard, so it was either their Heresy colours or Black Legion for me!
Arakasi wrote:I wonder if a (some?) small magnet(s) on the assault ramps would help to keep it in place (rather than fiddling with the ramp hinge...)

Yeahs that might work, I’d need magnets and to figure out how to mount them in not much plastic! Another challenge I suppose!

More Nurgley goodness tonight (Mrs gobert is binge watching the Witcher so banished me to do some hobbying!) the tentacles got a couple of washes of Druchi violet and the gums on the leader and around the pustules on the tentacles got a wash of Khorne Red (about 4 or 5:1 with flow aid).

They look pretty sore now I think! I then spent a while tidying up the black armour, so it’s now black and the metal work has some definition again!

The black was pretty time consuming, so I’m glad to have it out of the way. Next will be highlighting it, which will probably take a while with all of the pitting and shattered edges. Still that’s usually one of the fun bits, so let’s hope it is this time! Before I do that though I spotted a few bits of horn, tentacle and fleshy cable that I need to paint first.

I also want to do some damage on these guys, but not sure on colours to use for that. I’ll be using purple and grey for the edge highlights, so do I use that or just grey or brown or metal? I’m worried that I’ll bottle it if I can’t decide! Ideas welcome

Thanks for looking!

Wow gobert, those Black Legion plague marines are great! Thanks for the tutorials too, I'll have to keep them in mind for future projects.

I think a lightly purple-tinted grey would look best for highlights. It'd contrast with the gold, but not overpoweringly so.

Thanks thumpingbear, I might just mix the two highlights for scratches, though having just done the edge highlights I’m not sure there’ll be much space for any!
ShadowsAndDust wrote:Those are some of the better painted Plague Marines I've seen.

Thanks ShadowsAndDust, very high praise indeed, hopefully I can keep it up!

Mrs Gobert continued her Witcher marathon this evening so I got on with the purple edge highlighting. With all of the pit marks it’s quite a lot of edges! I got it all done though, but it needs plenty of clean up, so that’ll be a task for a future painting session.

As you can see, pretty rough edge highlights!

In other news I did my big to fight Papa today and got my booster. Hopefully the side effects will either not arrive or retreat to the aether before Christmas Day!

In case I don’t post again before the big man in red comes, Happy Christmas everyone!

100% intentional, the Panthers fall when their Captain is tainted by Nurgle after taking his helmet off at the wrong time (he’ll be the only marine without a helmet). After he died the Panthers marked all of their vehicles in black as did the 1st Company their Armour. More and more black crept in (I’ll start doing the odd black Arm soon) and before they knew it they started adding spikey bits in gold to their black bits and worshipping their fallen leader. Thus ends the story of the Void Panthers and starts the story of the [insert name here]. I’m thinking the Blackstone Fortress will be involved to tie in Mallex and their presence on there. Ultimately they become a fragment of Abaddons Black Legion too (he must’ve liked their new colours!).

Thanks Not Online, the holidays were great, getting to see Family was a great after last year!

Sadly Papa Nurgle tainted me too much after my booster, really knocking me for 6 the day after so no painting was done before Christmas. Thankfully it all passed in time for my folks to visit and now they’re gone I’ve had the opportunity to make more progress on the Plague Marines. It doesn’t look like much but there’s a few hours gone in to these 3! I picked out the boney & fleshy bits that I missed ready for contrast and washes. The main task though was to tidy up the purple edge highlights and I even got the grey highlights on 2 of them.

I think the touch up increased the area that’s actually black, which helps them not read as purple. I was a bit sloppy with the grey in places though, so I’ll have a bit more touch up to do on a few spots. I’m pretty pleased how the grill on the Bolter dude came out I think most have two purple and two grey edges!

I probably could’ve done a fair bit more but I’ve been watching Tranformers: War for Cybertron and it’s hitting me right in the nostalgias! I loved the original series as a kid and could pretty much quote the movie word for word (and song for song) which means there are loads of nods that I’m picking up on. If you were a fan of the original, give this one a go, it’s making me want to paint a Tranformer mini!

Thanks for looking and I hope you all had a good Christmas!

Hehe! Not quite killed but certainly corrupted! I think they’re already out growing their current display base, so when I’ve finished that, I’ll have to start another with added corruption.
Olthannon wrote:Great progress Gobert, particularly liking the flesh being rather manky!

Thanks Olthannon, manky is a good way to describe their flesh I think.

Another painting and Transformers watching session tonight. I got in to a better flow with the edge highlighting on the final mini, which is ok as he’s the leader. I then did a few random bits, like highlight the tabard on the Bolter dude. I wanted it dirty so just added Zandri dust and gave a rough kinda textured highlight. I then washed the fleshy and boney bits I missed before having a play with pustules in yellow and doing a call an green pass on the bits that I want to be green and a wash where I want to have an OSL glow from the green.

My inspiration for the OSL glow was darkkt’s plague marine he did a while back. Hopefully I can get it half as good, but I’ll be doing it to a different recipe so it may not glow as much.

No painting tomorrow as we’re off to the Panto (Snow White at the Hippodrome in Bristol) and then will likely watch The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+. I might get one more session in on the 30th, but if I don’t, Happy New Years!

Thanks for looking!

They are looking really good already. So many details that I can only imagine how much work they need to get done.

Funny enough, I wondered out loud to my friend the other day, that how come I have never started a Death Guard force as I like painting rust so much.
Or maybe I should just finish my current projects

The Land Raider is truly a huge model. When I was young, I was super jealous of my friends two Space Wolf Land Raiders.

Happy New Year!

They’re really cool minis! It’s very tempting to push my Series 3 Space Marine Heroes up the painting queue to keep the theme going. I too am surprised to hear that the master of rust hasn’t done any Death Guard, that needs rectifying Ezki!

We had a great time at the Panto last night and dinner out with friends and their kids, but tonight I had the big to paint. It was nothing but the fun bits tonight; pustules, horns and and Glow!

Finished the sand yellow (I think that’s what it’s called) on all of the pustules. The ones bursting through the armour got a Nuln oil wash to better define their edges, then a tidy up with the yellow. To add to the soreness I made up some more Khorne Red Wash (about 1:5 with thinner) which I dabbed off the tops. A bit more yellow to tidy up and a spot of Yriel yellow to finish.

The horns went Zandri-Ushabti-Screaming Skull, I tried to get the stripes lots of people use but I’m not sure it was particularly effective given how uneven the horns are.

Last up was the bit I was dreading/looking forward to the most; getting all of the glowy bits glowing. I’d done a caliban green layer to set things off, so I slapped on some Emerald Green over a narrower area and the sources of light. A narrower layer of Scorpion Green followed leaving Emerald showing in some of the none source recesses. I finished with a mix of Scorpion and Skull white in the light sources, and that’s where I leave them for the year;

I’m definitely in the pleased camp with how they’ve come together! The glow isn’t quite like darkkt’s but I still like it, especially on the back packs and on the Bolter dude’s helmet. I’m calling them pretty much done, I just remembered they I haven’t done their many rivets, and obviously they need their 3D printed bases doing.

With that I’ll be finishing the year on 89 minis complete, though in reality it’s only 26 as 63 of the total was rebasing my Blackstone Fortress minis. These guys should give me a good head start on 2022, and I should be able to knock out some BSF Terrain too. I’ll save a recap of the year and hobby goals for January. Thanks for all the comments through 2021. I hope you have a good night tomorrow night and all the best of the New Year!

Cheers,

gobert

Haha, you might be right. Maybe I could cook something up for the annual "Space Marine" theme of the Dakka painting competition. Hopefully Nurgle will not tempt me too much. My wallet might not handle it, especially with the new Eldar and possibly DKoK in the horizon...

Ah the horns. For some reason I always hate painting long horns, even though I like how they look on many models.
The effect is certainly visible and very well positioned. You could however darken the stripes just a tad? Maybe not on these guys as doing it again is a pain, but in the future.

Nice work on the glow effects as well. Really brings a lot of character to these guys.

The effect is certainly visible and very well positioned. You could however darken the stripes just a tad? Maybe not on these guys as doing it again is a pain, but in the future.

Nice work on the glow effects as well. Really brings a lot of character to these guys.

Thanks Ezki, I think a Plague Marine is just what the painting challenge needs! 1 more on the pile of shame won’t hurt, especially if it’s quickly removed!
I like the idea of going darker, I’ll have to try to remember for next time, cheers!
Viterbi wrote:Really cool to see those Plague Marines progress to the finish line! They look really scary, the black armour makes them much more intimidating as their usual color scheme. And it contrasts nicely with all the fleshy bits.

Thanks Viterbi, I agree the black is much more sinister than the traditional drab green.

Happy New Year to you all! Not much to report on the painting front, but I did a bit of hobby time when my daughter wanted to paint on NYE. I decided to tidy up the park converted Indomitus Lieutenant that came with a batch of Dark Angels bits I bought in eBay. I scraped off some of the GS, filed down other bits and gave him a DA head and shoulder pad;

I think he looks broody enough for a Dark Angel now! Him and an ETB Intercessor will be my test models for 2 of the wings, I think I have a scrap bike I can test my idea of a green tinted Ravenwing. I’ve been watching a few Trovarion videos lately and really loved his Grim Dark Blood Angels which suits the aesthetic I’d like to try on these guys. It shouldn’t be too hard to adapt for the Green and Deathwing.

There might be some hobby time tonight, though I might use the time to sort out my started projects and rehouse them.

Thanks for looking

Black Plague guys are looking better and better. Really good work on all that detail. Highly intrigued by that last mini.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Thanks youwashock, they’ve been really fun to do! Black Plague is my current working title for them too! I’m also intrigued by the Dark Angel, he’s looking pretty cool, but whilst sorting through my hobby stuff tonight I couldn’t find a suitable right arm for him. Does anyone know if Indomitus has a spare right arm as that’s my only source of Primaris bits right now!

As I mentioned earlier I had a big sort of my hobby stuff so I can remove the bureau I was using at the start of this plog to be a desk for my wife in our spare bedroom (so she doesn’t have to listen to me on calls all day long! Her words not mine!). I kind of got distracted whilst rationalising stuff and ended up plotting out the rest of the Demi Company for the Void Panthers. I was worried that i didn’t have sufficient bits, mainly helmets, but with my last eBay buy it seems I do have enough. I ended up getting together everything to make up a 10 Marine Devastator Squad, a third Tactical squad and a full Company Command Squad.

However, I’ve made a bit of a resolution that I’ll get through my primed minis before starting any more builds. That leaves the Panthers with the 2nd Combat Squad of the 2nd Tactical Squad and the 10-man Assault Squad on the painting desk. The Assault Bike, SM:Heroes 2, Dreadnought, Land Raider and the above squads will have to wait quite a while given my painting rate! That leaves me with the following projects for me to choose from;

Blackstone Fortress Terrain
Blackstone Fortress Tokens
Blackstone Fortress Adventurers x 3
High Elf Archers
High Elf Spearmen
High Elf Chariot
Void Panthers Tactical Combat Squad
Void Panthers Assault Squad
Necron Warriors
Space Marine Heroes Series 3 Plague Marines

More Blackstone Fortress Terrain will be next, but what would you guys like to see after that? I’ll probably save the Chariot and Plague Marines for a bit though.

Thanks Jazzy, hopefully I’ll get them done soon.

Thanks ShadowsAndDust, I’m pleased with how the OSL turned out. It’s not perfect but good enough!

So this is the 4th attempt at doing a year in minis post (Safari keeps crashing on my phone when I’m using the spacebar to navigate and edit a post). It’s not been anywhere near as productive in terms as painted minis as the past 2, with only 26 done and 63 rebases. Part of that is down to most of them being painted from scratch where many in previous years were touch ups of varying degrees. I also got distracted with other hobby things like rescuing eBay buys;

Plus I got a 3D printer which took a bit of getting used to and some repair

It’s proven it’s worth with the Blackstone Fortress terrain but isn’t really good enough for actual miniatures. I don’t think I can justify a resin printer just yet though!

Building models was a big part of the year, with a Land Speeder. Venerable Dreadnought and recently a Land Raider coming together. But enough of the excuses; here’s the measly few minis I finished this year;
January
===Nothing to see here===
February

Void Panther Tactical Marines
March
===Page intentionally blank===
April

6 x BSF: No Respite Poxwalkers

2 x BSF: Escalation Ad Mech Adventurers
May
===printer error===
June

3 x Blood Angels Tactical Marines.& Company Standard Bearer
July
===build in progress===
August
===printing===
September
===setting base===
October

Void Panthers Land Speeder
November

Blackstone Fortress Dragons Rest Terrain
December

more Blackstone Fortress Dragons Rest Terrain
So that’s the 26 minis that I painted this year, nowhere near the target i set, but I’m still pretty happy with the stuff I’ve done. The Land Speeder being my favourite (though the Plague Marines would win if I finished them last year!) but the Blackstone Fortress terrain has also come out great. I also really pleased with my rebasing project, with the whole of my Blackstone collection getting shined new bases;

Which looking at that pic tells me I managed to complete 1 of my targets which was to have a display board! I had meant it to be this one;

But it’s still laying with its zenithal prime, maybe this year!?!

Thanks for all of the comments and pointers and inspiration through the year! Hopefully 2022 will be a better year, there’s going to be new plastic Eldar, so a good chunk of the community will be celebrating already!

There's some real winners in there, gobert. The AdMech guys, the classic Blood Angels, the speeder. Quality stuff. Best of luck in the coming year!

Great stuff in your year of painting! The OSL on the plague marines looks ace. I particularly like the tummy mouth, the contrast against the black looks fantastic.

Looking forward to seeing your dark angels mate.

Your year in review is pretty epic.

I will say that having a resin printer is totally worth the entry cost.
Is your next project Dark Angels?

Thanks Olthannon, that tummy mouth is nice and gribbly, probably my 2nd favourite bit after the bolter dudes helmet.

Thanks theCrowe, the Panthers have been fun this year and looking back has been cool too. I like the wise-crack theme, Fetid Felines perhaps, or Repugnant Panthers, Fallen or Fetid Panthers... I dunno, the jury is still out.

Thanks AustonT, Dark Angels are the plan for my Indomitus Marines, but that'll be a way off yet I reckon. I'll do a few tests and see if they jump the queue or not. the resin temptation is strong, but its more that i'll add to the pile rather than the cost that puts me off!

Thanks Viterbi, I have to admit that I sang the song in my head too! Hopefully you like the OSL on the latest BSF terrain piece too!

No work tomorrow (the joys of a 9-day fortnight) so I squeezed in some painting as I'm away on a Uni reunion this weekend. I didn't do anything complex, just the bolts on the Plague Marines, their bases and as I used the same colour a piece of BSF Terrain.

I'm liking how they've come out, though a closer look at some of the OSL reveals some flaws (power fist skulls for instance). I'm calling them done though I've just ordered some Vallejo Rust Effect that I might apply as streaks from some of the bolts and in some of the pit marks.

The terrain was just a few dry brush colours to get the simple OSL. I'm still amazed how effective it is for something so simple!

An altogether productive evening I feel!

Thanks for looking!

That's exactly what happens, I print off a ton of bits that just go in the bits box...but its all so cool!

Ha! The temptation is definitely there, but I’ve just given up my prime bits hiding location so I should refrain for now!

That’s true I suppose! I got some rust effects paint so maybe they’ll grow in messiness at some point.

Thanks BC! Panthers of Pestilence is probably my favoured term for them right now, maybe that one will get adopted.

No painting updates as last weekend was spent on the lash with my mates from Uni. It’s been nearly 10 years since I’ve seen them, but it was just like the old days… and that included the volume of beer imbibed, so this week has mostly been recovery! I’m just about recovered and Mrs gobert is out tonight so I’ll be doing lots of BSF terrain dry brushing. So standby for a proper update (assuming the kids go to sleep ok of course!)
