Keep up the good work!

Thanks Arakasi, I decided to take the plunge on a cheapo battery powered airbrush. So far all I can tell you is that it’s very quiet, I’ll have no concerns about waking up the kids. That said, now I’ve done some research I think I might need to set up some sort of extraction mechanism to use it in the loft. Still it’s basically the size of a small spray can so it’ll be easy to take it outside. Maybe soon I’ll slip some paint in it an lenses how it performs. I have a load of Panthers primed ready for their base coats, so they could be a good test.

 Ragsta wrote:

Aha the curse of metallic marines - I could never decide how I wanted my vehicles!

Look forward to seeing the end result on that.

And yes, I’ve experienced some slowdown with Dakka recently too - almost had me painting my pile in frustration lol

Lol! Dakka would have to slow for quite some time to make a dent in my pile! As for the vehicles, I can’t recall how I came to black, but all gold bikes didn’t appeal to me, and it worked so now all vehicles will be black!

I made some decent progress last night in the speeder; highlighting the golds (Retributor base, Liberator then Stormhost silver highlights) getting a nice shine on the Panther icons. Then it was the slog of covering all of the black again after my failed Nuln oil experiment. A couple of layers went down on the purple spots and I decided to carry on and do the purple edge highlighting on the black;

I think I went a bit thick and wobbly in places so I’ll have to tidy that up before the grey highlight. It feels like it’s coming together now, which is cool for a project that’s gone on for quite a while now! I might get some more done tonight too since Mrs gobert isn’t interested in watching the Michael Schumacher documentary with me

Thanks for looking!

Sorry CB. I missed your comment from the last post. To be honest, the more I think about using the airbrush, the more I reckon I’ll end up using it outside too, but no wires should help!
youwashock wrote:Getting there, man. It's looking real good.

Yeah, I’ve been wanting one of these since I first saw the old metal flying coffins. I feel like I’m nearing the final push now!
Olthannon wrote:Lovely stuff Gobert! Those purple highlights look really cool, very blade runner!

Cheers Olthannon, I hadn’t thought of them being blade runner esque. I keep thinking I should do some Dark Eldar doing this style of highlights!

Speaking of highlights i finished up the highlights in the black tonight. First I tidied up the purple, narrowing the liche purple highlights by going back over with some of the black. That got them much crisper looking I think. Then I did some highlights on the bits that are actually purple, before finishing up with a highlight of Dawnstone (yet again I had to go back through old posts for the recipe!).

Not looking too shabby I feel, and more importantly; not much left to do! Some of the Leadbelcher bits need highlights, but not many now. I forgot to highlight the heavy bolter, so that’ll be next. Then it’ll be picking out bits that’ll be green; pipes, buttons, screens etc. There might be a few red bits too plus some parchment to do and the model will be done. I should probably get on with priming the base too!

Thanks for looking and the comments!

Landspeeder is coming along nicely. I have a soft spot for that model as the first 40k vehicle i ever painted (as Space Wolf). Looking forward to seeing it all put together; the gold marine crew should draw the eye.

With airbrushing, whether inside or outside I urge a quality respirator mask. For indoors, a spray booth helps- that can be vented out a window for extra effectiveness.

Thanks CB

A bit more has been done, not that any of it is immediately obvious! Mainly further highlighting on the black including the Heavy Bolter. I also did the shoulder icons on the pilot and gunner, so it’s pretty much just fun little details to do now

I really must get priming that base! Speaking of priming, the Blackstone Fortress terrain is ready for priming;

Filler Primer today they sand, polyurethane on the bits that are rocks/bones/metal to remove the print lines on them a bit more before a black primer all round

Thanks for looking!

Land Speeder now looks like it crashed and the crew forgot their seat belts.

And that's a serious pile of terrain. Your BSF set up is going to rock.

The highlighting has really pulled that speeder together, I’ll admit I was worried about the mass of black initially. It’s looking pretty darn neat already! But of course only one…?

Ha! Yeah and the nearby Chaos Cultists managed to impale their torsos on some really long spikes! The BSF stuff is quite daunting, but it’ll mostly be dry brushing, I just need to figure out a good way of doing it on such large pieces. I might need to source some make up brushes!

Viterbi wrote:Landspeeder is looking great, the purple highlights on the black look so cool! And man, that's a lot of BSF terrain

Cheers Viterbi, I think the purple on here is better than my bikes from last year. The BSF terrain will be next on my to do list I think
Ragsta wrote:The highlighting has really pulled that speeder together, I’ll admit I was worried about the mass of black initially. It’s looking pretty darn neat already! But of course only one…?

Thanks Ragsta, the plain black is a bit boring, though I do sometimes wonder if the purple is a bit Dark Eldar! And shush about getting more… *looks at list of stls he’s downloaded

This past week I’ve been full of this cold/flu that’s doing the rounds in the UK (it even made the bbc website!) so I’ve been feeling unable to do much hobbywise. On the plus side the COVID test was negative! All I could muster was priming the BSF terrain and testing the airbrush. The BSF stuff was first with the filler primer;

I was quite impatient so I slapped on the polyurethane shortly after the filler primer. I did though wait 24 hrs after that before spraying the lot black;

The polyurethane did take the edge of some of the print lines, but not by much. It has however bubbled up in places so I’ll either have to do some prep work or paint on some rust depending on the location of the bubbles! The loft also now stinks of spray paint fumes as it was quite a lot of paint (1.5 cans each of filler and black!). Still it looks pretty cool already I think!

I also gave a quick trial run on the airbrush. I primarily wanted it to speed up basecoating and I think it does that pretty well:

The test dude in the middle went pretty well, so I got the second half of their second Tactical squad. It was a bit fiddly, but I’m pretty happy with the results. Certainly it was quick (though maybe not if you factor in the cleaning!) no the coat was much smoother than I’d have managed with a brush! Coverage wasn’t as good as I’d have liked, but I can get the bits I missed with a brush quite easily. Cleaning afterwards was a bit hard given how thick Retributor is and how quickly it likes to dry. I’ll probably pre mix some ready for my next attempt to see if that’s any better.

Sorry for the dull post, maybe something more interesting next time? Thanks for looking anyways!

Quite a bit to catch up.

The 3D printed bases look ace! Really fitting to the theme.
Speeder is also coming together well! The neat highlights make it pop nicely!

Airbrush definitely helps with priming. I should play around more with mine as well.

Just remember to use a quality respirator, especially with the polyurethane varnish.

Cheers Ezki, I was chuffed how the bases came out, just a few more to do now. Most of the advice I’ve seen is to get a respirator, maybe I should? The polyurethane was brushed on so I didn’t use any protection

Yeah it was cool on the game night even when it wasn’t painted. I need to get started on it for the next one if we can find a slot in busy calendars!
Not Online!!! wrote:Landspeeders positively snazy.

Thanks Not Online!!! It’s the complete core set, they did stuff for the expansions as well which I might have to look in to at some point. Not that Mrs gobert will be happy!

As mentioned above papa is still with me, so I’ve not done a lot. I started basing a few more BSF minis, but only got as far as taking them off their old bases. I did though manage to get the base coats done on the green, red and yellow bits for the land speeder,

I’m particularly enjoying and liking how the knobs, buttons and screens are coming out

The base is done too but is looking a bit bland so I might have to add something to it, maybe add some height?

Thanks for looking

Ha! Everyone encouraging me to get more speeders! My next fast attack will be an attack bike which came in an eBay lot, it needs a decent amount of work first as it’s a bit broken and wonkily put together!

We’ve been away this weekend so I only managed an hour or so tonight. That was enough to modify the base to make it a bit more interesting. I don’t know why I didn’t do this from the off as all of the smaller bases I have from Sector Imperialis were modified in some way. This one was such a big boring paved road with some metal strips and a manhole cover and just looked sooo dull! Even without paint it looks loads better.

As buttons and screens and parchment don’t need much paint I also pretty much finished the speeder and glued all of the bits together;

I need to wait for the PVA to dry on the base before I can paint that again. I think it looks a tad more interesting now it has a few extra bits on it and it shouldn’t take too lon to paint whilst also being a good practice for the display board

Thanks for looking!

It’s one heck of a cold isn’t it!?! Mine has just about passed now, hopefully yours has too Olthannon. Hopefully the finished product satisfies too!

Well, it’s been a marathon not a sprint, but the speeder I started back at the end of June is finally finished! Ok so there were a few detours along the way that took up hobby time, but it’s been a labour of love. I’ve wanted a Land Speeder some way back when the 2nd Ed version showed up in White Dwarf and I finally have one painted! Hope you all like it;

If only took an hour or so to finish the base. It was basecoated with dawnstone, a liberal dry brush of Administratum Grey then White. Bits of the road got black Templar contrast and the other Basilicanum Grey (I think I prefer the latter for this task) the metal bits got Lead Belcher and the eagle a gold. I then gave it all a heavy Agrax wash and called it done.

I was hoping to get a session in during the week this week but it’s been a real at work and home so I want up for much other than sofa and tv. Work picked up on Friday so feeling a bit better about that and the building works finally came to an end as well after just over a year. I now have along most of dig tasks to do, so my hobby time might be limited some more in the coming weeks

Thanks for looking!

Yeah, I’m glad I did the duller underside, thanks for spotting it! Part of me thinks the top is a bit too purple, but I still like how it looks. Oh, and to be clear the VPs ride for both sides!

Tonight was another F1 race so I stayed up way too late watching and doing a bit of BSF terrain painting. Nothing too exciting yet, just a few base colours. The steel is Leadbelcher with iron breaker and stormhost dry brushing. The gold is Retributor, the reactors old enchanted blue, cables in sybarite green and the bone is oak brown. The red is a heavy wash of thinned Khorne red (a bit too heavy as it’s pooled horribly in places
