Yeah, they’ve been so much fun that I’ve been eyeing up some more! That green in the eyes does looks cool, so maybe I will keep the scheme.

For now though I’ve carried on with Killzone Volkus. Yesterday I spent a few half hour slots throwing metallics on to the terrain. Breaking it up in to small chunks worked pretty well and wasn’t too painful. It probably helped by having 4 different metals to do, so it wasn’t too monotonous.

The metals were Boltgun metal, dark gunmetal, brassy brass and ghennas gold. The ghennas gold turned out better than it has previously but I wanted a bit more copper pipe look so I added some orange speed paint. That did the job and made the pipes look like brand new copper. I also tried the orange on the Boltgun metal which looks like an old copper pipe.

Today I carried on sneaking bits of progress here and there, mostly concentrating on finding the bits of metal work that I’d missed, painting the various cables with contrast and slapping lots of Ratling Grime all over the metals.

Why did nobody tell me how good Ratling Grime was before! It gives a fantastic greasy grimy look and the terrain is now looking rather grim dark. I wanted to put a bit of Nihilakh Oxide on the coppers and there’s a few other details to pick out but the terrain is getting closer to completion. With it being magnetised to ease transportation I fear it might take a battering so will have to give it a matte varnish

Thanks for looking

Yeah, tell me about it it was quite a slog yesterday hitting all of the rivets with rust but I managed it!

Thanks Ezki, the Poxwalkers have been great fun so far, hopefully the painting is just as fun. The terrain has actually been ok, nowhere near as bad as I feared, would’ve been nice if it didn’t stink so much after the oil wash. Thankfully that’s eased off now.

F-Me that was a lot of rivets! And it didn’t even do them all! I hit most of the rivets yesterday with a bit of Vallejo Game Effects Rust and then some Rust. Whilst it was a massive slog that finished at 1am, I was expecting worse. Lucky for me a new set of brushes arrived just in time. Some Squirrel hair brushes with a fine tip and a fat body that made sure I could hold most of one sides worth of paint. Here’s where I got to

With a few close ups to show details

You’ll also notice that I added the Nihilakh Oxide on the coppery and brassy bits to help with the weathered look. I’m sure that I’ve missed bits, but I’m close to calling the set done. I want to throw some dark charring on the tops of the walls, which I’m thinking of doing through the airbrush.

Well, I actually managed to do more painting before I posted the words and pics above. Just the airbrushing I mentioned above and then picking out the skulls and the notice board in one of the strongholds.

Annoyingly it looks like I missed spraying the ratling grime (with a bit of speed paint gravelord grey as I was running low) from this side of the big stronghold. Oh well, I’ll have to live with it I guess. I’m now pretty much done and just need to give it some matte varnish before I add some blood for the blood god.

Elsewhere my New Year New Army project made some minor progress as I got all of the basing done.

I could do with a few more minis to get to 2000 pts, and I’m eyeing up a Great Unclean One and some Plague Bearers from Legends lists. Though rumour has it they will be part of the next codex. I’m thinking the Kill Team will be my next project now that I have all of the minis based and ready to go

Thanks Olthannon, glad you like the posts, I’m worried they’re a bit samey. I’m really quite excited to get the Nurgle gang painted as you’ll see from today’s progress!

As noted above I’m worried my posts get a bit samey, tonight’s update on the Volkus terrain really would fit that to perfection as all I did on it was the varnish. Annoyingly the Army Painter Matt anti-shine varnish, is actually quite shiny . It’s old so that could be the cause, but it’s a tad annoying. Thankfully it’s more of a satin finish than a full on gloss so it doesn’t look terrible. I took the structures apart and sprayed everything separately to make sure I got full coverage, but that also means that some bits are quite snug fitting now. I’ll give it a scrape with my knife when the varnish has cured fully.

It seems I was in the mood for spraying stuff and decided to smash through the whole Death Guard army.

I’ve decided to stick with the scheme from Blackstone Fortress for the Plague Marines so they all got a prime of Colour Forge Matt Black. I might change things up a bit and sponge the highlights on the black armour instead of the edge highlight and I might also change the rust to match the Volkus terrain style. Both because they’re quicker and I think sponging would suit the Death Guard more than crisp(ish) edges. The Gellerpox Infected and Poxwalkers got a Halfords grey prime and a zenithal of Halfords white primer. The minis that were already primed got another coat to help seal the texture on the bases better. It might’ve been better to drop some watered pcs on the bases first, but hopefully this will work well enough too. Finally ignore the 2 minis that are still green, they’ll be going on eBay soon as they’re duplicates.

Thanks for looking

I slapped a few bits of Blood for the Blood God around some of the Volkus terrain including some badly spelled graffiti. With that I’m calling Volkus complete and since it breaks down in to 30 pieces plus 6 Brutal & Cunning crates (for the ratlings to stand on so they can see out of the stockade and bunker! ) gets me to 60 pieces finished for the year.
Here’s the pics starting with Stronghold A and it’s dodgy spelling

And somebody didn’t quite make it all the way up to the platform

The Blooded made it to Stronghold B but their tagging was a bit messy

There’s a bunch of scatter terrain barricades

The blooded will enjoy hiding behind these

The set also includes some Mechanicus Ruins

They turned out pretty cool so I took some individual pics as well

And the bigger 2

And last but not least for this update are the Ratlings’ crates

I love that they were too short for the terrain set that they were sold with!

The Bunkers and Stockades are pretty much done too but I found a few skulls that I missed so I’ll try to finish them in the next few days.

As for the rest of the terrain set I’ll be taking it to my regular ish Kill Team gathering on Wednesday, after which I’ll splatter some blood about where operatives die for some added flavour. I also want to take some action shots, but the question is what minis should I use? Blooded, Void Panthers, Blackstone Fortress gang, 2nd edition Orks, Blood Angels, Space Wolves, Necrons, Crimson Fists or a mixture of them?

Thanks for looking and sorry for the high res pics

Thanks blockade, it was great to get a game in last night on it.
muette wrote:Excellent! They will look great on the tabletop.

Thanks muette, hopefully this batch of pics will give a feel for how it looks on the table

I took a few pics on Tuesday night of the whole set

I also got the Blooded out and some Void Panthers for a few action shots

The sniper found his hiding spot

The Void Panthers got stuck in

The Butcher and co wait impatiently for action

And a Space Marine Hero was eager to get involved

The file set enjoyed a good bit of stalking

And a final one for most of the details

I then packed it all away in my carry case by matching-ish the sprue layouts. I took pics to help me remember the rough order and orientations

With the foam insert for my kill team and then my 3 printed token storage above that it’s a nice snug fit. I should probably put a thin piece of foam underneath as it was rattling about a bit on the back of my bike.

Last night also saw the first game on the terrain.

We ran out of time but looking at the likely outcome of the final TP figured that the Blooded drew with Tempestus Aquilons. If the Aquilons killed another Blooded they would’ve won, but the operatives that they needed to kill were some of the tougher operatives so it was quite tight. Packing away didn’t quite match the pics above, but I think it all survived the journey

I’ve also finished Stockades and Bunkers from the Brutal & Cunning expansion, but I’ll save those pics for another time.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Not Online!!!

I should really be getting back to the Space Hulk Terminators, but I really want to get the Plague Marine Kill Team done as I reckon they’ll be quicker to play with than the Blooded. So I got stuck in and put together a test of an adjusted colour scheme. The theme will be basically the same as the Blackstone Fortress Ppague Marines, but it’s much quicker than the tedious edge highlights

The black armour got a sponged and stippled purple highlight then a stippled and drybrush grey highlight. I gave the trim a brassy layer before washing with Ratling Grime and spotting on some Verdigris. The steel was Boltgun metal, ratling grime, vallejo dry rust and then spots of rust. Both metals got a quick dry brush over the top to bring some shine back as it was looking a bit too dull. The fleshy pipes and tentacles started with ultramarine blue, mixed up to purple, then through to pink and I think they’re looking pretty cool though I’m worried they contrast a bit too much with the rest being so muted. The had Zandri dust and ratling grime, and then highlighted back up to bone. I’ll then picked out the spots with yellow and ringed them with red soreness and a dash of purple. I then did a bit of green glow, picking out a couple of holes on his face mask and a bit on the symbol on his shoulder. Now the question is do I add a bit more green to be closer to the Blackstone Fortress Plague Marines

Let me know what you think on the green glow, or the Blue/Purple/Pink fleshy bits. I’ll be starting the Space Marine Heroes Plague Marines soon.

I nearly forgot to post pics of the Killzone Volkus expansion from Kill Team: Brutal & Cunning.

The kit has a duplicate of the same set so I flipped the inside and outside of the stockade parts to help magnetising and to make them look a bit different. I also carved off the Aquila from the bunker and added some freehand Blooded icons and a bloody hand print

I took a load more pics and put them in my Killzone Volkus album if anyone cares to look. I feel the lighter base colour helped these and think they look better than the main Volkus set in terms of paint job at least.

I also made a start on the Plague Marine Kill Team yesterday. I pushed the highlights on the armour a bit more, perhaps too much on the purple, but nothing a bit of a wash can’t fix. I forgot to take pics so might update this later

Happy enough with the test Plague Marine I decided to make a start with the Kill Team. I did push the highlights a bit more but they ended up looking purple with a dusty grey highlight, so I knocked it back with some Ratling Grime. That gave a good compromise that I was happy with. I then got stuck in with the painting the trim in brass… so much brass!

I also made a start on the steel/iron elements getting two done, but that much metallic paint in 1 day is a slog. Maybe I’ll get that done in the next few days

Thanks Captain, it was a super fun project. I’m actually looking forward to my Sector Imperialis terrain arriving and I plan on tackling it in a similar fashion.

I’ve been plodding along with the Plague Marines, getting all of the Steel bits base coated the other day

I then made a start on the fleshy bits and Nurglings. The base colour is blue making them look like Plague Smurfs,

They didn’t stay full Smurfs for long as I added purple to the blue for their first highlight

A couple got a further highlight of straight purple but I’ve not got a pic of that for now. Hopefully I’ll get them all purple and move on to the pinks tonight.

Thanks Olthannon, glad you like the pics they give me a good sense of completion. As for the Plague Marines I think the glow is what really sells the look

Last night I carried on with the Plague Marines fleshy bits, first finishing the purple

Then adding pink to the mix

It was taking a while and I was beginning to doubt myself so I decided to finish up one of the nurglings’ skin

It didn’t quite go pale enough so I added some white to the mix

And he’s looking a bit better. I’m still not sold and he’s looking a bit rough, so I think I’ll give glazing a go, just not sure what colour to do the glaze, possibly the mid tone? What do you guys think?

Thanks for looking

Thanks mate, the as is state is growing on me as I’ve done more of them. Might do the back of one of them with Druchii violet and see how that goes.

Doing each layer on each of the Plague Marines before moving on to the next wasn’t working for me. So I figured I’d do them one at a time and get the completion buzz early. So far I’ve got 5 of them done with a couple more to go

The last two are partially highlighted as well so should get that done soon. Have been shooting ideas on what other colours to do on the Nurglings. Yellow has been suggested for their innards to up the diseased feel, which could be good as it’ll match in either the Plague Marines’ boils. Another idea was a coat of gloss to give them a slimey feel. Will give those a try unless you guys have better suggestions?

Having sold the other half of the kill team started set to a guy at work I got the itch to do something with my Space Marine Heroes set. I’d been tempted to do different chapters for each Marine, but resolved to do some minor conversion and go with Deathwatch instead. I got a bunch of Deathwatch Pauldrons with some Intercessors I got with the Deathwatch Watchmaster that I painted for Blackstone Fortress, plus I had a decent variety of sculpted chapters’ shoulder pads.

Left to Right we have a: Black Consul, Ultramarine, Space Wolf, Raven Guard, Dark Angel, Blood Angel, Imperial Fist. For the Dark Angel, Space Wolf and Blood Angel I had a few spare heads that fitted their chapters well. The Spsce Wolf even got a firstborn chest piece and special Bolter, though the former is hidden by the Bolter. Annoyingly I realised afterwards that I had a bunch of Intercessor bits that I could’ve used for more variety on him and to expose that chest. The Fist got a different respirator wearing head and he needs his chapter icon glueing on. Just Captain Justian to go. I’m thinking that he’ll be a Void Panther, perhaps the only one to cross the Rubicon?

Finally! The pink highlighting is done on the Nurglings! Of course I now see loads of pipes and stuff that I’ve missed .

Before moving on to washes I threw some yellow on for the pustules and bases. One of my WhatsApp groups suggested yellow innards and I thought that’d be cool, so they all got yellow tongues and mouths.

It contrasts the pink really well I think. Next I’ll do the barnacles, horns and teeth on bone. Need to think what colour to do their tabards. Purple is an option, as is just a dirty white, maybe like the original death guard colours? Or maybe I lean in to the Dusk Raiders and go with a dark red/crimson?
