C&C welcome btw

Aside from the whole "Hey look, shoot me here!" exposed head that I've griped about GW adding to the Venerable and Contemptor Dreadnoughts over the last several years, that thing is just ridiculawesome. Absolute beast looking.

My opinion on the "hey shoot me" head is a little different, I think it's just for decoration, and shooting it wouldn't make.any difference. I like the aesthetic.

I think I let it slip a few days ago by making a blog Knightley ;P Check me sig, blog number 4's there now
I have a feeling after our game in a few weeks the nids'll be the ones you'll be facing

@M.K - Cheers I wanted a much darker blue than the standard Ultramarine, just to show he's in aged armor.

@Veteran Sergeant - Thanks

@Proto - how can a head be there for just decoration?, mind you it is like a button to destroy the Deathstar, just don't press this red button, no matter what.

@LDP - Checked and noted, I haven't faced nids ever, so this will be awesome!

Also, your marine is done LDP

Still lurking away here, Knightly!

Love what you're doing as always. The Dreadknight with halberd is excellent although, honestly, if it isn't to late, it'd be cool to see it in a pose which suggested a little more action. Just my thoughts, whatever you do will rock!

The precision, stunning! I'm so pleased
So much attention to detail, love the highlights. Thanks alot! I've started yours now by the way

And I trust that damned Inquisition symbol on his leg is illustration on the story of how the Ultramarines keep scrapping against them, the overly loyal dogs the inquisition are, need to get a beating every now and again (although we're yet to win ;P)

Always thrown for a loop when I see a non GK on this thread, but that is one sexy looking ultra. Nicely done, Knightley!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2012/11/14 20:00:10

Post by: Knightley

@ET - Yep I would have liked to do the same however my white primer ran out and I got stuck using black... big mistake...

@M.K - If all it takes is one word, then why waste more

@Graven - Squiggles for the Squiggle god.

@C L - Good to hear your still lurking mate, The problem I found with the NDK is that to get the halberd across the body would require a complete rejig of both arms, weapons and pilot. Sadly my skills aren't up to making such a large change and be happy with it. I had wanted to do that though

@LDP - I figured you had your own GK force and having a tie-in between the two could be handy (It could stand for the marine serving under an inquisitor at a point?)

@Moltar - Haha, got to keep you all on your feet, thanks for the compliment!

Update: So, doing yellow over black primer.. worst experience ever.

Good Lord Knightley... why would you do that??

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2012/11/14 20:04:55

Post by: Knightley

I'm chalking it up to severe retardation.

After the first coat of yellow I actually though I should just scrap the model and start again, but what you see there is 2 thinned base yellows, sepia wash and one more yellow base, so its well on its way, I'll step up to layering on a brighter yellow tonight, time permitting

That looks really nice! I have your marine almost assembled. Gaaaah, stupid exams keeping me from my hobby!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
@Proto - how can a head be there for just decoration?, mind you it is like a button to destroy the Deathstar, just don't press this red button, no matter what

I was thinking that the head would just be there "for looks" as it were, and the rest of the dread would be as normal... Unless you're envisioning a marine, still alive, in armour, inside the dread?

Hello. This is my first look at your blog and it loos good. I like how you are giving alot of personal treatment to these models which makes them very interesting to see.

This yello guy looks very good. He looks like he was sprayed white and the detaisl are very crisp which I like. Doing yellow over black is hard but on the plus side, often when I see yellow over white people allow the ease of it to lull them into slacking and the result is watery yellow over white.

Very good.

@C L - Thanks

@Gits - Thank you, I have to tip my hat to you to be able to paint yellow so consistently and so well for all these years truly the mark of an experienced painter!

@M.K - Cheers Mate!

@Leech - Thank you for taking the time to comment and welcome to the blog! out of all the models posted what would be your favorite one?

@ET - That head... it's from the Iron hand upgrade kit IIRC.

@Yellowbeard - Thank you!

Update: I started doing the base colors on Funkyh's GMS marine but the study where I paint was stifling hot and the paint was drying far to quickly (even with water added) so I didn't get very much done (Nothing to take pictures over anyway)

@M.K - Oh I see what you did there!

@Proto - Mint, you'll have to get him from LDP I handed him over at our Sunday game.

Update: Apologies for the long periods between posts, lots going on now summer is on its way, I did get to have a game Vs LDP on Sunday and I'm just trying to find time to write up the report for you all. @Graven - Yup, got 10 metal terms and 10 metal PAGKs to play with, also keep an eye on my facebook, there will shots of BBQ weather incoming

@ET - Wouldn't trade it for the world, although this great weather doesn't allow me to paint as much as I would like.

@LDP - Batrep below

@M.K - Thanks mate!

Update: Lack of painting makes Knightley 'something something' but I finally got the batrep done (from what I can remember anyway)

Spoiler:

5 Command squad, 2 plasma guns, champion, Apothecary

Dreadnaught, assault cannon, missile launcher
10 Tactical Marines, Plasma pistol, plasma gun, plasma cannon
10 Tactical Marines, Bolt pistol, power fist, meltagun, Lascannon, Rhino
5 Devastators, 4 heavy bolters

Mission/set up

Short table edges, two objectives with 3VP each low density of terrain, Warlord abilities, LDP gets his commander as scoring unit, mine allows move through cover of my commander.
LDP wins roll and deploys first, rhino with tactical squad behind rocks with Sterngaurd behind them, command squad behind trees next to the Rhino. Devastators line up behind wooded fence, half tactical squad deploy on objective, chaplain behind building Marnius in his land raider occupy the flank with remaining half tactical squad behind followed up by dreadnaught.
I set up all combat squads on my right Razorback with strike squad inside, Crowe and the 3 acolytes behind him. All half squads with flamers/plasmas/meltas deploy right at the front with the heavy weapons half squads behind them, assault squad behind the line ready to jump across. On my left purifiers in the Razorback with the Inquisitor as attached behind that is Dreadnaught with the assassin in the trees, Thunderfire, half tactical squad and interceptors hunker down behind ruined steps.

I fail to seize initiative.

Turn 1 LDP

Landraider and chaplain move up and the Landraider shoots at the Purifiers Razorback and explodes it no one inside dies (first blood to LDP) Dreadnaught opens up on the assault squad and kills two, Devastators put rounds into the assault squad and take down another two the half tactical squad with the Lascannon fires into the Strike squad Razorback and immobilize it. On LDP’s left flank the rhino speeds forward 12 and fires its stormbolter, doesn’t kill anything. Captain and command squad move through the trees, stern guard move up to support the tactical squad.

Turn 1 Me

On my left, half tactical squad move back , preparing for the land raider to go either side, interceptor squad shuffle forward as the 30” jump will put them right in front of the Devastators, but choose not to jump this turn. Purifiers try to move out from the wreckage of their Razorback and move an inch, then run two inches instead of shooting. Dreadnaught opens up on its counterpart and blows him up, Assassin shoots at the Landraider but only glances it… on four D6. Plasma cannon fires at the Devastator squad and it deviates and only kills 2 (they pass leadership) the other two half tactical squads with flamer/plasma gun move forward and shoot at the rhino but don’t do anything, Lascannon shoots at Rhino but misses. Razorback shoots at the Rhino but can’t damage it. Strike squad disembark from the Razorback and move forward, Crowe and his lackeys move forward. Assault squad jump behind the Dreadnaught moving right to engage the Landraider if required.
The Thunderfire cannon shoots at the command squad in beyond the trees, 3 direct hits, resulting in 23 hits, leading to 17 wounds, all of them saved by the captain either by his 2+ save or the feel no pain from his apothecary… dafuq?

Turn 2 LDP

Landraider moves up 12 inches and shoots, doesn’t manage to kill anything, half tac squad move behind the low rocks and shoot at the Purifers, a few hits, few wounds but all saved. The Chaplain jumps beside the Landraider, Devastators shoot at the purifiers and kill one of them. The Rhino based tactical squad move to the top of the kill and shoot at the tactical squad wiping them out completely. Rhino inches forward and shoots at Crowe but he saves the shot. Captain and Command squad move up behind the Rhino and can’t shoot at anything, the Sternguard run forward as well, but are out of luck to shoot anything.

Turn 2 Me

Purifiers move towards the Landraider then charge it hoping to put some pain on it with the Master Crafted hammer but I completely forgot to roll for hammer hand and was only hitting at S8 and fail to do anything… Assault squad jump behind the building waiting for the Landraider to push forwards, the half tactical squad moves further back hoping to be out of charge range, the Thunderfire opens up again on the captains squad, this time hitting 19 times with 14 wounds and all but 1 is saved by the captain…. Really? The Interceptors jump forward and shoot at the half tactical squad on the objective and the Dreadnaught kills two Devastators. My plasma Cannon fires a single ball of death at the sterngaurd and score a direct hit melting all the squad in fiery death, Lascannon squad shoot at the Rhino and miss again, the two remaining half tactical squads move towards the hill squad as well as the Strike squad… and their flamer muhahhaha, Crowe and his posse move forwards. They all shoot at the hill tactical squad and after shots, wounds and saves he is left with four guys, who are then promptly charged by the strike squad and they kill all but one marine, the sergeant, who chooses to fail his moral and I fail to overrun him, leaving my strike squad on the hill. Alone.

Turn 3 LDP

The Landraider moves forward and shoots at the Thunderfire cannon, killing the Techmarine and the cannon as well. Disgorges Marnius who the promptly charges the half tactical squad gobbling them completely. The Lascannon half tactical squad move and shoot towards and at the interceptor squad and kill some, as well as the half tactical squad on his objective, as well as the sergeant from the Devastator squad, the result leaves 2 interceptors alive. The command squad move up to the base of the hill and decide that shooting the Strike Squad along with the regrouped Sargent and the Rhino leaves the Strike squad down to one man, who promptly gets charged and destroyed.
The Chaplain decides to have a go at the Purifier squad and charges in. He takes a wound from overwatch then dies to the purifiers flame attack before blows are struck, very very unlucky.

Turn 3 Me

The assault squad jumps and assaults the Landraider, and fail to do a single thing. The librarian knowing he wasn’t going to be able to help psychic flames Marnius and kills two of his squad. My heavy weapon half tactical squads and dreadnought all form a gun line and open fire onto Marnius, doing a couple of wounds but not enough to slay him. The purifiers and interceptor squad assault the Lascannon half tactical squad and take down to two marines taking none in return. On the hill, the acolytes perform their only role as meat shields and attempt a charge and lose one and fail the charge, I was then able to get the rest of the marine into combat they were able to take out two guys, and only lost two in return, Crowe counting for one of them.

Turn 4 LDP

The Landraider moves back towards the rear objective shooting at the Razorback across the map as it goes and taking off a heavy bolter and Hull point. My assault squad then gets charged by Marnius and his banner killing all but one of them who then choose to fails his leadership knowing they can’t be caught up to and gets away, leaving the behemoth out in the open and on one wound. The half tactical squad on his objective decide it is better to hide in cover than stand out in the open and move behind the building, the Devastator Sergeant on the other hand just man’s up and hold his ground. The Lascannon squad loses another two marines and can’t seem to hurt the purifiers down to one man. On the hill the captain dispatches another marine and the remainder of his squad gets another. Crowe kills another leaving only the captain and two marines left.

Turn 4 Me
With Marnius out in the open and on one wound my gun line opens up again and it comes down to the Dreadnaught to smash them both and does the deed! The captain on the hill takes a wound but his mates survive. The Rhino gets wrecked from my Immobilized Razorback. The lone marine facing the Purifiers is still alive due to failure to hit/wound.

Turn 5 LDP

The Landraider moves forwards and shoots at my razorback again, but doesn’t destroy it. The captain on the hill loses his two mates and I lost another marine in return, there’s a long battle of attrition here! Sadly the lone marine against the purifiers dies and they consolidate closer to his Devastator sergeant.

Turn 5 Me

The assassin moves forwards as he was forgotten about in my last turn (silly bugger hiding in the trees) but can’t shoot anything. . The purifiers and interceptors annihilate the Devastator Sergeant with a lot of shots when in hindsight I should have had the two interceptors charge and the purifiers go around. The combat on the hill ends up in a stalemate with no deaths.

Turn 6 LDP

The Landraider moves up again and shoots at the purifier squad and blows up the inquisitor but doesn’t hurt the purifiers. On the hill the captain finally falls to Crowe and his swift attacks. The squads shuffle around.

Turn 6 Me

Crowe and the tactical squads move towards LDP’s objective. The purifiers charge the Landraider but again I forget about Hammer hand and fail to damage the Landraider. The assassin, dreadnaught and Lascannon fire at the Landraider, and do nothing, this beast just will not die. The interceptors move through cover but don’t get very far… realizing the game could end this turn I’ve made some bad choices, I don’t have any troops near any objectives, the purifiers could have contested the northern objective, but made the mistake of going after the Landraider and on my objective I need to get across difficult terrain and end up four inches away from my objective. If I get another turn then I can win.

The Dice gods don’t agree with me and the game ends. LDP wins 4 VP to 2 VP

I seriously fell like I'm only here to be impressed and for moral support, you hardly ever (practically never) need critism

Haha, I feel the same. a pat on the back is about as much input as I can give.

I think we all know what has to he done... Knightley, start painting below your usual standard so we can provide more productive input.

Nah seriously though, I love dropping in on this blog and getting some crisp, grey inspiration!

@M.K - Moral support is always welcome, It lets me know people are still watching my blog

@Graven - Oh yes, I wish I had brought more when they had first come out (like 30 odd heheh)

@C L - Happy to supply inspiration whenever you stop by, I may just drop a level at some point to see if people are still paying attention

lol, I'd think someone would realise if you suddenly stopped painting at this high standard.

Actually, I'd find it funny if you'd been tricking us all this time and all these models aren't being painted to te highest standard

He's still looking great, Knightley! Hope at least some of this makes sense! (Not keyboard failings, tired mind, lol)

Yet another outstanding figure Knightly. Hey... you'll get to see the apothecary you made me in action soon. I've got enough GMS marines to build the bulk of a small army & your apoth figures prominently in the command squad. Should get the battle done (with Thing 2) today I think.

Here we go! finally something other than my iPod again!

He is looking great, Knightley!

Also, every time I sit down and paint your GMS model, and hen walk away, I then return and almost immediately dislike something about the paint job :S... I suppose that may be why I don't paint too often... lol

Post by: Knightley

@M.K - Cheers, I find that if I continually look at the stuff I don't like on a model then I'd never finish one of them, there are parts etc on my guys I want to do better but I also realise I have to get through so many, so there will have to be little flaws that get left behind.

@RiTides - Thank you, stick around, there is more where that comes from

Beautiful as always. Have you switched to a new gold, it looks a bit more vibrant?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2012/12/31 05:41:04

Post by: RiTides

You don't assembly line these (do all the highlights on like 5 of them, then move on to the next)? I guess that's just more common for a lower standard of painting... but to take each figure through to the putting of static grass on the base one by one seems like so much work

(Perhaps you assembly line the prior basecoat steps, and only work on each individually at the detail stage?)

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/01/01 02:14:36

Post by: Knightley

Happy New year!

@M.K - Cheers, I would personally just go for it and let the chip fall where they may

@Gits - Thanks Gits

@Graven - Nah I haven't changed the gold, I've just been highlighting with mithril silver to help it pop just that little bit more

@ RiTides - I'll do the primer and base coat/wash stage for each batch and then bring the grey up on each model as doing so much grey is a little mind numbing

Update: Terminator done

I think its a toss up between your Terminator Techmarine or the Dread Knight as I despise the baby-carrier but you made good any advice on how to keep motivated even tho no-one is really saying alot on my blog despit my request for feedback ideas etc and I hope you don't mind if I use that lava styled energy blade (that you did on the Mentor Space Marine) on my Chaos blades? Lava and it's glow is one of my strong points Do you think you'll be doing anything from Forge World any time soon? Keep up the great work

Post by: Knightley

Ah yes, the rather interesting conversions

I'd be honored if you were to use the lava energy blade, it was a fluke but fill your boots!

Motivation is tough, but I created this blog to track my painting, if I get no posts it doesn't stop me from posting my next picture. If I created it to get responses I would be posting in a very different way.

@Nash - You wouldn't be the first to suggest a titan, the only thing stopping me is cost, oh and time, I did a quick stock take of stuff left to paint vs stuff painted, I probably have another year of painting if I can get a squad done a week (which is only lasting while I'm on holidays)

@M.K - shouldn't be much longer

@Nash - I was considering doing a nurgle/admech army with zombies being servitors and Typhus being a Terminator war-priest thingy, I have a lot to paint etc before I get to there though.

Looking great Knightly Quick question: As I am someone with ok-ish understanding of PCs how do I make the link in mysignature clickable like yours and everyone elses. The instructions aren't very clear, either that or I'm mentally incapable of understanding them

Post by: Knightley

@Briancj - Nice, there was a few hurdles that I had to consider like the cost of the new finecast servitors for one thing, how are you going to approach that?

@Nash - Question answered hopefully the clickable link is like this - Name of the link you need to take out the space between url and =link to your page
So mine looks like
Grey Knight Painting log and once the space is taken out it becomes
Grey Knight Painting log
Hope that helps

@M.K - Yuss! waaay ahead of time!

I have to REDO the servitors, because I'm going the zombie route. But that's just hacking off guns and putt on cables and crimpers and drills and...

@M.K - Shouldn't be bent up, I looked at it in hand and it *looks* normal and yes, I am going to see what kind of monster I can create from a defiler

@Briancj - hah doesn't sound like to much work, I was thinking about getting a whole bunch of old mining equipment, pick axes, hammers etc and attaching them to the arm ends, zombies and servitors going hand in hand

@Nash - Yeah, I'm still working on the concept in my mind but once done it should look pretty cool.

after about pg 34 i skipped to pg 75.
this is almost a plea rather than a sugesstion as i am too nooby to do so.
you apparently have a chronus techmarine to repaint.
i would love to see one with a jump pack if you have a spare.
and possibly drill a hole in the pack and attach it to a flying base.

You know Knightley... your consistency of excellence is just truly inspiring. That means it's time for you to start experimenting with some new techniques. You could play around with some OSL for example... or perhaps some NMM (or TMM) techniques. I think you're more than ready.

Very nice Knightley
I agree with Gits I think you should dip your toe into these other techniques. I'm sure you'll pull them off well

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/02/03 21:12:40

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - Agreed, I think I may see what models I have after this push and throw in a random model with different techniques to break up the see of grey. I did enjoy doing the Mentor Captain for Graven with the OSL and weathering on him

Spoiler:

@M.K - Yeah you guys are getting hammered over there, hope everything is safe for you and your family.

@ATSKNF - Thanks, Matt's link to the page shows the step by step for how I do them

@Nash - I'm definitely consider it

@Gits - Agreed, though I still have to get through another 5000 points of GK/SM on top of that. Thoughts as to what model/army/game should be up next?

@M.K - Sweet that's good to hear

@Graven - like a monstrous creature perhaps? an eldar skimmer/wraithlord?

@Norn - Absolutely I plan on doing a GK army shot then SM Army shot then a combined army shot, just want to get through this push

@Blackhand - Infinity you say eh, I've seen some of the models, do you know of any NZ retailers for them?

but it is just as easy to go through a guy called Chokonnit on the official forums

http://infinitythegame.com/forum/index.php?/topic/6191-split-box-leftovers/

He sells new models as well as splits up boxes and sells the individual models which can be really handy and he has a great reputation. Just PM him and he will flick you a quote

Congrats on the news Knightley. Be prepared to have your schedule all messed up for awhile but its worth it.

If its a boy, are you going to name him Draigo? Perhaps Stern or Castellan?

Knightley, I think that terminator is my favorite so far. He is in a very dynamic pose which is tough to do with terminators. Great job.

I think you should change the blog title to 'Crisp, Grey and Consistent' because your unrelenting turn over of quality GKs is immense!

And congratulations on becoming a father! Now what army are you going to make him/her play? I wonder if someone sells mobiles with paintbrushes and boltguns... Or power armour baby grows... GW are missing out on some serious profits. I think I've just struck gold with this idea.

Also I second, third and fourth the vote for Infinity. This is the perfect time, I'm just in the process of organising a new Dakka Painting Competition for it so get down to the subforum and keep an eye on us working out a theme. What have you got to lose? Buy a mini, paint it up and enter it and you might win some more!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh and Shae down in the sub-forum ships Infinity to most of the world at really competitive rates. He's in Scotland but sometimes it's cheaper than more local options, I know quite a few Americans and Canadians definitely order from him. Plus I think he'll remove the packaging to keep costs down if you ask.
