@Casey - They wood indeed, the more I post of Greyny pictures the more people come out of the woodwork to comment on how board they are, this is why I try to post with better quality pictures
@M.K - Hahah, I wonder how long this will go on for
I was all like: 'Awwwwesome!'
And then I saw imgi's post and I was all like: 'Well that's ruined.'
Haha! No seriously it looks brilliant. I find myself craving divergence from you though... Show me a new trick! I demand it!
...Or keep posting your own brand awesomesauce. Either works.
I would also like to point out that my 'wood' pun was less to do with wood being grainy and much more to do with 'woodlouse.' Woodlice being very, very grey. 'Would lousy,' get it!? ...well I find it funny. You can say a lot of things about me. Terrible, terrible things. And you'd be right! But you can't say my puns aren't on topic and that's something!
@Graven - I suspect he would have problems trying to get into the bottom of a pringles can
@Casey - Divergence, I get where your coming from, I have Hector Rex coming up so that would be a small divergence from grey, I set out to paint my entire army and I heavily suspect that if I move onto something else (even for a little bit) I'll never come back to it. That is my fear.
@Gits - I'm waiting on the trade marks for crisp and grey as well, that way no one else can use it
@YB - Many thanks!
@WM - Oh snap, Word Bearers those guys are the antithesis of my Gray Nights looks like I'm going to have to step it up a notch, great find by the way.
Looking forward to HR for a little variety. You're right though, if you stopped to try something else you might not come back. Stick with it, your commitment is inspiring.
@WM - Hahah I'll give it a Demon Hammer and end up with flat models
@Casey - Yep at my current rate (if you also take into account the models remaining to paint - check the front page) I'll be well short, so I soon have to figure out a quick way to get through the models without compromising on how they look.
I feel the need to come out of lurking to let you know that the work you're producing at the moment is just stunning, and I agree with Graven, the shields are very nicely done!
@M.K - Yes, I will catch my nemesis in due time, I have about 4000 points more than he does painted up so the total amount of squiggles is in my favor
@LDP - Thanks bud
@Gits - I know right, such a menacing pose, its one of my favorites.
Update: Term 4 with first stage grey
Edit: Oh I also went to a bitz swap at a local gaming club and managed to pick up a TON of IG guys for acolytes in my Henchment warbands. Very happy with it.
@Casey - Graven's got it on the nose, I got the basing kit a while back and decided that all the terminators this push will have a small resin additive to the base, this one happens to have the SoB one.
@Graven - Did you buy the basing set any point? if so how on earth did you affix the models to the terminator sized bases?
Yup. Cut the pegs off, sand the bottom, gs round the edges.
On a totally separate note, just looking at that helm made me think that, with teeth painted on in a toothy shark grin would look awesome for carcharadons / world eaters. You know, as you do.
Hahaha yes, as you do, I had toyed with doing jagged teeth on the face of this one but it wouldn't fit the aesthetic of the army, but I did have a similar thought.
@M.K - what in the name of chaos are you doing to your keyboards? using them as cricket bats?
@Casey - Hahah, thanks for the kind compliments mate
@Gits - Cheers!
Update: Apologies for the lack of updates over the last 2 days, my brother was leaving for Canada so spent quite a bit of time with him, plenty of drinking and merryment. One this he did leave me was his models..... see below for what I now have....
Spoiler:
Chaos models - painted in the 1995-1999 region of time
The next models were painting between 2011 and 2013
Spoiler:
Random models - Inquisitor scale marine
Loyalist marines (only 9)
Spoiler:
Necrons
In the to make pile are 10 metal immortals, 1 destroyer and about 27 necron warriors, not a bad haul
Knightly: The only guy on Dakka that can apologise for not posting a blog update in three days.
Sounds like you had a blast but aren't leaving presents supposed to be given to the person leaving?
Seriously though, that's some fun toys to play with! Now the difficulty is stopping them distracting you. If you take those crons for a spin eventually what colour will you be painting them do you think? Grey? Haha, I kid, I kid... Boltgun Metal, right?
@Graven - lol Roger roger crons, the paint scheme my brother was going for was a bone/marble look but dirty, so I'm thinking if I do go the way of the metal overlords I'll be doing the same scheme as him, just my own take
@Casey - Oh I gave him an awesome going away present, one he can nurse while on the flight away I have put them in carry case and put it behind the door so for now its out of sight out of mind
@Nash - Thanks man.
@M.K - I'm thinking I'll repaint the chaos characters as those were painted by me over 15 years ago so back before washes and skill heh.
Update: Rex baby! all the base colors done and washed as well
Whoa, lookin great. I meant WIP taken with the set up you use to photograph finished models but actually I can see the new colour palette well enough like this.
@M.K - Agreed, stupid me for choosing it as my acolyte armor color :(
@Casey - Ah I see, the problem being is when I do the better lighting its a change of light bulbs and after painting for 30-40 mins those bulbs get pretty hot to handle, Will see if I can wangle it in for you.
Exquisite levels of detail! And you've managed to do it without cluttering up the miniature. I don't think I could pick out any one thing as my favourite, everything has been executed really nicely.
It's also a refreshing break in the tide of grey although he fits into the army seamlessly. Top job!
Oh and it's more specific than the UK corner. Graven and I both live pretty near each other in Scotland. So it appears you have a Glasgow fanclub.
@M.K - Thanks, I have an idea for the demon weapon, but im not 100% sure if it will work
@Nash - Yep its twisted, I didn't notice it till after I had painted quite a bit of it, I figure I'll leave it as it is, to represent that a chaotic sword doesn't need to be strait edged to cause carnage
What I like about how you paint, is that you are painting to an achievable standard. Everything is solid, highlights are clean and crisp, and the details are interesting, but not overwhelming.
@Gits - Thanks mate, the trip to Adepticon looked pretty cool and getting to see all the fellow Dakkites and getting shots of everyone looked like fun.
@YB - Thank you
@Matt - Yeah I was a little disappointed on it, I may come back to it at a later point though
@Graven - Cheers, I just realised you don't get a good shot of the sword in any of the pictures so if there is an upsurge in people wanting to see it I'll take another shot of just the sword.
@Briancj - Why thank you, it was thing I went for when painting my armies is a consistent look and feel to the every model. I do understand that not everyone likes seeing the same thing over and over again, but to those people I say this.... Stay tuned...
Update: Next model started, I'll label him as a Grand Master
Knightley wrote: @Gits - Thanks mate, the trip to Adepticon looked pretty cool and getting to see all the fellow Dakkites and getting shots of everyone looked like fun.
One day I'll either move closer to where everyone else lives (AKA not NZ) and try to make one of those kinds of events, I'm pretty sure there would be the odd person who would be interested in seeing the force in the flesh.
Beautiful. I love all the details on this guy - the helmet, the sword, the book, and of course, the squiggles. But the face face is magnificent. Nice work.
@Casey - Yeah I wasn't in the mood to do another group of five and hector and crowe were giving me puppy eyes
@Nash - Yeah, interesting to note the older models lacked purity seals, I guess back in the day they used other methods to show how pure they were
@Graven - I know, but don't forget I still have that Whirlwind top part you sent me, i've been trying to come up with a way to mount it effectively on the newer Rhino hulls - Stay tuned
Update: Highlights done but urgh, my god, curved surfaces blow for doing edge highlights
@Graven - Yeah I had to come up with a way to break up the sea of red when there is a purity seal on a chest eagle, green seems to have been the best choice
@Nash - Thanks, I took a gamble with it and she's paid off
@Casey - Oooh good idea, what could it represent, 500 years of service? Could lead credence to having a mix of really old armour?
Yeh good idea, you could probably go a lot longer on the service time if it's enough for a unit citation on a squad of Grey Knights. That is if I'm remembering my marine fluff well enough. It could also be for a particular victory the squad were part of achieving or for some amazing feat they achieved by themselves. Lots of cool options.
@Casey - Agreed, I think its the mithril silver as its very bright and pops when added to the gold
@Nash - I wouldn't say its quick at all, I would say it would normally be just short of a week to do one model, if I have more spare time I can get more done.
It's not actually a beast of a conversion to take down the back height so it matches a regular gk termie, but tbh you pulled these off so well that it wouldn't be worth it anyway.
I don't know about guides but I have done a couple. Saw across the back piece at the top of the two rows of vents, a d cut the front piece halfway round the circle created by the hole for the head. Then all you need is an aegis hood - DA termie shoulder-shields work well.
I have a better illustration somewhere in the depths of my blog...
Dude hurry up and finish him already! with your great style that old model is going be awesome! love how damn clean everything looks, and your consistency is spot on throughout the many many pages we've been following you!
@Graven - Cheers mate, I am quite happy with how it turned out
@Nash - I'm tending to agree with you, but what about the latest grand master I completed? what will he become
@Matt - Thanks Matt
@Casey - You stay classy San Diego
@Gits - To be honest that was the parts I was most worried about, while the gold parts look good there was very little to work with and ended up having to try dry brushing it and wasn't 100% sold on how it would look.
They are the remnants of 45 strong terminators strike force sent to quell a dreaded incursion of daemons who were supported Abbadons 6th black crusade. They keep their pauldron shields blank as a sign of remembrance of those lost during the fighting.
So do you feel like you are still just as focused as when you started? You are still a powerhouse of crisp and grey but are you still enjoying it? I hope so. I am.
@Casey - Definitely not as focused, there have been some stuff around the house that I've had to get done (building a deck - I was still able to paint at night though) moving a lot of my stuff from the study (aka, the new room to house the baby) and recently I've been very exhausted and tired I have a limited time span left to get as much models done as I can so I *should* really knuckle down and try to get through as much as I can, but being really tired doesn't help.
@Nerdfest - Thanks dude, there was an online auction for 9 of those old school terminators but I was away from my PC when the auction ended and I missed out, they got sold for a very low price as well, very gutted.
Knightley wrote: @Casey - Definitely not as focused, there have been some stuff around the house that I've had to get done (building a deck - I was still able to paint at night though) moving a lot of my stuff from the study (aka, the new room to house the baby) and recently I've been very exhausted and tired I have a limited time span left to get as much models done as I can so I *should* really knuckle down and try to get through as much as I can, but being really tired doesn't help.
I got the impression you were a little tired of it. Sorry about that man, I'm sure you'll get more time soon and feel a bit more enthusiastic! You're still working faster than most of Dakka anyway! Is there anything we can do to keep you motivated? You're so close to the end of your list now, maybe two small pushes away!
And how long until the little one comes along now?
@Dakkamite - I'm stoked you like them! sadly I'm not much of a general and I'm a terrible loser and a worse winner I am considering popping by some of the Auckland City Gaurd sundays that are coming up though.
@Matt - Hahaha distractions, agreed with that, its easier to not paint than it is to paint, its pushing through it and putting paint on the brush then put it on the model, step by step
@Casey - You would have to be one of the few who can pick up things like that through written words. I had a sit down and think while sorting through 5 large bitz bags I got from spikybits.com and realised a lot of whats demotivated me was getting fed up with the 2 scum bags who have effectively stolen models I've sent them under good faith expecting return models then having them disappear off the face of the earth. Of course there are the awesome people of this hobby who have gone above and beyond for me *cough* Graven *cough* and its people like that who keep my spirits up
Update: Second coat of grey done on the first marine.
I'm not going to complain when someone says I'm awesome I think as well that p&m is such an overwhelmingly positive corner of dakka (which is generally a pretty chilled out and friendly place anyway) that getting stung is all the more galling. Chin up mate. Also, nice PAGK.

Hah, I've never thought of it like that but yes you might be right! I have a bit of an affinity with words most of the time so I guess I do tend to get more out of reading something than most. Interesting... must be why I learn well from reading too...
Anyway! I digress, I'm really sorry your on a down. I'm guessing these rip offs got to you via the GMS thread, I've set up a similar thing for Infinity and I was worried about that happening. I've just suggested people use the swap shop guide but it's not a perfect firewall. Hopefully you perk up soon and maybe get a trade with someone as awesome as graven! When I finally start my Marines I'll finally give graven that game and join the GMS too! We'll drown out the jokers with trustworthy fellows like ourselves.
I have something that might cheer you up too. I'll pm you tonight.
@Briancj - Haha you're far to kind! it's all about the warm fuzzies eh?
@Graven - I completely agree with you on that one, P&M is by far the most friendly of forums I've ever looked at and participated in since I started looking at stuff online. In comparison you look at the World of Warcraft forums and my god, I've never seen a bigger bunch of window lickers with high opinions of themselves.
@Casey - Interesting, there is only two other people I know of who can fully learn by reading, I myself am a tactile learner, learn by doing and doing a lot (so you could say this blog is about learning to paint grey ) Yes the rip offs were by the GMS thread and truth be told its why I've shied away from trading type activities unless I've traded with them before. There is a plan brewing in my mind about doing some models for other people but for now its going to stay in there before I get totally distracted away from the sea of grey that needs taming
@Nash - Thanks man, very rapidly nearing the end of this push as well.

That's really interesting, I mentioned this to someone once and got a 'meh' sort of response but I think it requires some research. I'll see what i can find out, in the mean time, if you don't mind me asking, who are these two people? It probably doesn't matter who but who knows, there might be a causal link or something. Tactile learning has a place for everyone I think. I might be able to pick something up by reading about it but it takes practice to get good at it. That's why I can't paint to save my life. It's definitely the best way to learn, so many benefits, muscle memory being a prime example.
If this blog is about learning to paint grey you could have shut up shop 87 pages ago. Although I bet you can pretty much do it in your sleep by now. As for those a holes that stole from you, forget about them, there are loads of good people in the world just concentrate on harnessing that tide of grey!
I didn't have time to send you that pm, I'll get it to you tomorrow!
@Briancj - Its true, blathering on about your opinion doesn't matter if your arena rating isn't x level its signs of serious mental deficiencies
@Casey - The two people are Lorna and Funkyh, I listed them on the front of this blog and in the GMS thread. Your right though, I could have shut up shop after page 87 but heck what would I do then? I'll await your PM
Update: Reds and Metals done. I also went to have a game at my FLGS and managed to pick up a relic contemptor dreadnaught for $80nz with a lot of weapon options! $224nz worth of model!
Sorry Knightly I meant the people who you know learn by reading but it doesn't matter, I don't know them so it wouldn't tell me anything. I will keep an eye out for those A holes from the GMS though, I doubt they'll be back mind you.
And I actually said you could have shut up shop at page 1, not 87, because you had mastered this right off the blocks! But as you say, what would you have done all this time, and what would we have done?!
Sorry I haven't pmed you yet, been really busy but I'll get round to it as soon as I can. Now I must try and sleep, I'm going crazy.
Hahah right, well perhaps I should spend more time reading what people type instead of assuming in my head what you were after. One was a kid I knew in high school and the other guy was an officer in the army I knew, sadly I don't recall the officers first name and only his last name.
The new model looks tight as always. Not sure I'm digging the right arm if I'm honest but I'm not sure why, probably just being picky so I have something unique to say.
@Casey - I think you may dislike it because the model is doing an un-natural pose, both arms out to the side with the head slightly up... who does that?
I think you might be right there mate! Some of those arm positions were always unusual to work with.
I've never played Grey Knights and I've been wondering for a while is this one holding a melta or a GK weapon I don't know about?
Also all this talk of GMS and GKs has got me psyched up about my marines which are still in their boxes. I'm making some really extreme conversion plans which is probably going to mean casting my own armour, press moulding and using more high-tech pieces. GK, BA and Custodians are my idea loot right now and the lore is old school. The question is do I get stuck in or give my Nids the TLC they deserve?
Well I'm worried about how long it'll take before I go back to them, I don't want to leave them unfinished for too long. I think I'm going to get my Infinity and Necromunda stuff finished while I make my marine plans then I'll hit the ground running and work with both the Marines and Nids at the same time.
I pulled out my marine kits and it's almost too many options. I was planning a unified, straight out of the forge look but there is so much cool stuff to play with and so many ideas. And I only have half the kits I want to draw on! I might need to start a thread to hammer this out...
I really like this incinerator, the GKs have brilliant looking weapons! Is the finecast psycannon an older version of the psycannon? It looks much better than the one I have in the kit.
@Nash - yeah, it does help when you find the old rogue trader era models and wondering what the feth he was supposed to be
@Casey - See, this is my point you can have all of these amazing ideas for armies (Heaven knows I do) but if you get too far side tracked then your original armies get left behind sitting pretty on your paint shelf or hiding away in a box of wonderment to be pulled out in 10 years time. If you do start a thread let me know I'd be happy to tune in and give my humble opinions. Regarding the finecast psycannon, yes its the older style much more of a stubby look to it than the newer ones more compact and deadly.
Too true mate, I'll have a think and give you a shout when I get a chance to put up a thread.
Yeh I'm really vibing that compact psycannon look, actually all the grey knight weapons have a similar feel. Including this little fellow who is shaping up nicely!
@Graven - Nice, always looking on the bright side of life
@Matt - Yep another metal GK for my collection, I got him from an Ex GW manager who had 3 PAGK's and 2 TAGK's sitting in a box in his shed, happy to take them on!
@Casey - Thanks, a high sweep attack is just what the doctor ordered.
Yeah wrist mounted is way easier and you have two options as well, BA arms for single bolters/meltas/flamers and GK arms for storm bolters, many options available to you
Yeh every time I see the Custode weapons I go off them more. They look pretty meaty but it's just way too clumsy for combat. Good point on the BA stuff as well, those aren't quite as cool but it's still way cooler than holding your weapon. In the future the cool kids don't use their hands!
This guy is just proving my point so well! Now finish him so he can spread the word of keeping your hands free.
P.S. Possibly a pm incoming. I have a plan. I think...
Of course Everyone knows that the GK smoke cigars with their free hand The ultimate in manly things to do on the battlefield, apart from walking away from explosions with out looking back
He's looking very crisp now, just the way we like him
@Nash - You never look back, its a proven myth from TV, it has to be real
@Casey - What can I say, I'm seeing grey (a lighter side of seeing red I would think)
@Daxx - Looooong time no see there Daxx, Terminator on the left is an old out of production metal Grey Knight Terminator the Terminator on the right is a plastic guy from hero quest I think (Graven sent him to me so he would know)
@Nash - Funny enough I have some of my original painted chaos lords (Abbadon, Kharn, Arhiman and Fabius Bile) which I intend on repainting when I have time
@Casey - Its a red shoulder pad with a white star on it, the entire squad has this design, the other half has a white backing with black star and yes the other model isn't a grey knight lol
@Daxx - well looks like I'll be doing Kharn first then
Update: Next guy started n- finecast blows, bendy sword and bubbles galore
Sorry to see you'cve been affected by the material that is finecast resin. I hate it, way too many problems. I've some people have had to return the models or sculpt the parts back in themselves.
How ever. Getting bent pieces straight is relatively simple. Put it under hot water for a few seconds and bend it back into shape. Not too long mind you or you'll end up with a gooey mess.
Don't block out the whisper of the Dark Gods my friend...
@Daxx - I found trying to assemble the old Lord of change in metal was an exercise in mental fortitude, well back then I didn't have the concept of pinning so holding his loincloth for 5 minutes only to have it come off with my fingers was quite rage inducing.
@Casey - You're welcome to use it its very simple and easy to do (probably why I've used the design on the other squad)
@WM360 - Ah your far to kind sir, I had ordered a finecast TA justicar and a box of plastic GK terminators and I ended up with one of the finecast justicars instead, it was rectified and I've decided to throw him into a squad, if I do end up mashing another squad together I'll send you a PM
@Nash - Yeah considering I brought the finecast Sammael without any issues from what I can see, having a single low level model with such issues is mind boggling. The whispers are pretty quiet at the moment, my GK's are protecting me well enough
Looking good! I think I'm going to go with a 5 pointed star but I haven't developed it any further, I'll definitely keep yours in mind for inspiration thank you.
@Casey - I thought about doing that, however after doing the black star and realising I had done a 4 pointed star instead I muttered "eh, roll with it"
@Daxx - Nice, shame it would be the finecast version right? or did you get it from ebay?
There is no finecast one, or at least not in Australia. But to be honest this would be one of the few models that would probably be better in finecast :/
@Nash - I kind of fixed it, I bent it back to where it should be and it didnt move back , so jobs a good one?
@Daxx - Yep, back when I was a littler tacker I had some rage at trying to get it to stick to his freshly painted backside only to strip the new paint of when it popped off for the 5th time that evening (the memory is still fresh in my mind lol)
@Casey - Kind of, I am really looking forward to trying this new way to paint tanks/large objects and thats motivated me to get through these guys a little better. That and all this talk of painting chaos has voices in the back of my mind urging me on
Nice job mate, seem to have got your mojo back! And always listen to the chaos voices anyway, pretty soon you'll be an expert in vomit, so I hear papa nurgle a-calling...
More excellent Knights from you! even your rank and file that you think are not great are great :-) any chance of an update of all of them? love to see how many are all ready for battle!
@Graven - Cheers man, yeah papa nurgle will be my patron god for at least 2 years yeah?
@Nerdfest - Oh yes, there we will be an update, including both the push and the current total force then each full army shots, just need to finish this squad, the NDK, a purifier squad and the repaint of the predator, not that much eh?
@Matt - Been busy putting paint to model? I hope so
@Daxx - Hahah, I think Tzeentch has already supplied me with something I could totally look forward to, 2 months left
@Gits - Hahah a Martyred angel perhaps?
@Casey - Yeah the tabbard looks good to me, good colors and depth to it.
