@Casey - You and me both mate, I think I'm up to like 8000 points painted now so seeing it all laid out will be lots of win

@Nerdfest - Aren't we all a tiny bit crazy, I know most of my family are mental, how about you

Update: second coat applied

Um.. er... yeah, totally!
But I actually have, a bit... not enough worth showing, though.
I have been converting a tad though, but I digress... Dota 2 is too fun and has taken most of my time...

Can' wait to see this guy completed, he will look great a usual!

@Casey - Yep, I have about 6000 points in other marines as well (Ultramarines and Dark Angels and there is the Tau and Eldar smatterings I have laying about) so putting force against force should be easy enough

@Graven - Apocalypse 2 - The Emperor Strikes back?

@Matt - Every little bit of paint helps, trust me

@Briancj - You've got it, and I wont have anyone to play against, well not until my little one is old enough, how many points would I have by then?

Update: lets smack on some grey highlights yeah?

@Gits - Thank you.

@Casey - You're far to kind sir.

@Matt - Cheers

Update: Ok, so apparently using the army painter light grey primer allows me to go strait into highlighting, so for the last two days it's been rather quick on this repainted predator

Post by: daxx367

So did you use a spray gun for the base layer or brush?
Looks really good ether way!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/07/02 00:02:48

Post by: Knightley

Nah just used the spray primer as the Primer/base coat/top coat and was able to go strait into highlighting, so quick instead of Primer -> Base coat -> Wash -> Layer 1 of grey ->Layer 2 of grey -> Highlight.

Also there's an infinity painting comp that I entered. Voting is up over here:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/537266.page

Shouldn't be to tough to pick my guy out of the bunch haha. Throw me a vote if you think its worth it

Is it bad if I can tell which is yours? The level of painting in that contest in really good.

Post by: IceAngel

Yeah, there are a lot of great entries in that bunch. Knightley, I like your entry but I think you should have done a bit more with your base. Clean paint job as always though.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/07/02 21:04:57

Post by: Knightley

@WhaleMusic - I would hardly say its a bad thing, when I got the model in hand and did some comparisons I actually changed my whole goal for the model.

@Ice - Once the competition is done I have other photos of the model to post here because.... well you'll just have to wait, If you look at the base it looks similar to my current bases wouldn't you say... I wonder why that is?

Update: Predator done

Old

New

Other side

Rear

And because I magnetized the sponsons...

And here is two predators side by side - interesting to note the difference in colour is hard to tell, what you can tell is there is no black lining done on the left one, but in terms of getting a tank painted, left wins by a week at least!

as always C&C is always welcome!

Top work mate. I think the left one looks a little better but you can't argue with the quality of the new one, especially at that speed! Good luck in the Challenge, has Infinity dug it's claws in yet?

@Graven - Thanks man

@Casey - I wouldn't say its dug in just yet, I like the ability to heavily convert my Spacemarines and metal infinity doesn't lend that well to customising at the moment

@Daxx - Awesome, are you excited to get some paint on it?

Update: Started the second Nemesis Dread Knight, got the main body bits basecoasted and washed

Big toy! So where do you stand on the controversial baby carrier?

Still not got back to your Warcraft chat but I'm backed up with stuff right now. As soon as I get a bit of time to take some pictures of an update I'll post again with an answer.

I would love to but the left hand holster has a massive seam line on it and I'm fixing that :/
But he still looks really nice!
And so does your Dread Knight.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/07/04 21:57:21

Post by: Knightley

@Casey - I'm not a fan of the baby carrier, its why I converted the first one, but I lacked the bits to convert this one so I am stuck with a baby hanger.

@Daxx - good to hear, cleaning lines and making the whole thing look nice and tight is the perfect way to start a model.

Even those imaginary internet cookies? I guess they could make you imaginary fat right?

Update: No real update today, however I did get a game Vs LDP on Sunday so here's that Battle report
Spoiler:

Game 7/7/2013 1850 points of Grey Knights vs Space Marines
Deployment short table edge
Game - Big guns never tire with 5 Objectives – Heavy support can capture objectives

My Army List
Librarian (2 Psychic powers Quickening and Might of the Titans) Psybolt ammunition
Three Terminator Squads with Master crafted Demon hammers and Psycannon in each
Vindicare assassin
Dreadnaught with two twin linked auto cannons and psybolt ammunition
Venerable Dreadnaught with two twin linked auto cannons and psybolt ammunition
Two Nemesis Dread Knights with Teleporter, Great sword and Heavy Incinerators

LDP’s Army List
Captain with Power fist
Command squad with Banner, plasma guns and apothecary
Two tactical squads with plasma cannons and plasma guns mounted in Rhinos
Squad squad with Sniper rifles
Devistator squad with 2 lascannons and 2 missile launchers
Vanguard veteran squad with stormsheild and power fist
Terminator squad with thunder hammers and storm shields mounted in a Landraider

LDP wins the roll and decides to go second.
I set up with dreadnaught on left flank, the rest of the army in the centre, venerable dreadnaught is on the objective (this was a stupid move as a venerable dreadnaught can't capture objectives) Terminator squads follow behind Nemesis Dread Knights. The plan here is to have the Dread Knights weather some damage then teleport forwards to draw more fire while the Troops run up behind them with supporting fire from the dreadnaughts and Vindicare assassin.

LDP sets up with his command squad on far edge objective, two squads in rhinos at the front, scouts and devastators hide in the ruins being in range of the objective, vanguard shelter behind landraider containing terminators and captain

Turn 1
Dread Knights move up with my terminator squads behind them, venerable dread steps left and immobilizes a rhino. Dread Knights and terminatorss run but don’t get very far dreadnaught shoots at his command squad but fail to kill due to armour saves.

LDP Moves his landraider up and disembarks terminators his vanguard move up behind Landraider. His tactical squad pile out of immobilized rhino and move towards the objective in the ruins. His other Rhino boosts forward to take cover behind the building, his command squad move behind the hill denying Line of Sight. His Landraider shoots at one of my Dread Knights and takes a wound off of it, his Devastators and scouts fail to hurt anything.
His terminators charge the wounded Dread Knight who promptly kills their Sargent.

Turn 2
Squad behind the Dread Knights in combat move closer to the Landraider, My Librarian and his squad move closer to the melee and are eager to get in there. On the far side, the terminator squad moves to the objective and throws some pot shots at the squad near the ruins objective, they get nothing.
My Squad assault the Landraider and hit but fail to penetrate with the Demon Hammer, My Librarian and squad assault LDPS terminators. Librarian challenges his commander but both fail to do anything however one more of his terminators dies to my squad
The other Dread Knight teleports between his scout squad and his command squad, and lets fourth a torrent of fire at his scouts but leave one alive, I was going for first blood and it didn’t work, crud.

LDP moves his landraider back after skirting his vanguard squad to the ruin side, his tactical squad move onto the ruins objective, his immobilized Rhino attempts a repair and but fails which self-repairing was something very new to LDP. The other rhino goes flat tack and gets a snapshot kill on one of my terminators with a plasma gun, his scouts pass moral but move away from the Dread Knight just to be sure. His command squad move towards the Dread Knight and all his guns turn to shoot as you could probably guess with that much shooting he's killed, plasma just wrecks terminator saves.
His vanguard assault and I lose three terminators but and he loses two veterans. The librarian vs captain doesn’t end well with my librarian getting insta-killed by a strength 8 powerfist to the face. another terminator dies and my Dread Knight takes a wound.

Turn 3
The four man terminator squad move towards the rhino. My dreadnaught opens up on the rhino and wrecks it, troops pile out the back so my Vindicare snipes out the plasma gunner (hindsight here I should have taken out the plasma cannon) venerable dreadnaught shoots at the disembarked troops but they make their saves. The close combat again doesn’t end well. The four man terminator squad attempt an assault on the disembarked tactical squad, they lose one termintor for their troubles and fail the charge. The Vanguard veterans take out the two remaining terminators but not before the lose two of their number, again power fists destroy things well. The Dread Knight get gribbled by his captain and remaining terminator.

LDP repairs the immobilized rhino and his command squad move towards it in case they are needed front line. His plasma cannon from the wrecked rhino shoots, hits, wounds and I lose all three remaining terminators (ouch that really did hurt) the land raider moves back to the front lines and shoots at the dreadnaught but lucky cover saves keep it alive, his devastators fail to hit/damage the Vindicare. Close combat goes well for LDP cleaning up the remaining terminators and consolidate towards the dreadnaughts.

Turn 4
I move my dreads further back towards my edge and try to do some damage, but they fail to hurt anything, the vindicare tries to hurt something as well but decides nope, not today.

LDP's command squad get in the rhino, his other squad try a run to the objective, but fail on difficult terrain, his vanguard tries to get to my dreadnaught but fails. his Landraider picks up his captain and terminator, shooting doesn’t damage my dreadnaughts or vindicare.

I call the game as I wasn't looking forward to getting tabled in the next turn, LDP wins 9 victory points to zero, a thorough smashing at my end.

Sounds pretty vicious. What do you think your errors were tactically? At the start of your rep, looking at the list, I wasn't sure about the assassin, and with relatively low mobility how you were getting the terminators around. Not sold on ndks as soakers, Tbh. Sorry, not trying to be negative, just reflecting on what you've shown us. My experience of gks is assault and assault fast - it's why, ironically, khorne daemons are such a hard match up for them.

I enjoyed your battle report. Sorry you got crushed but it happens sometimes. I was surprised by the lack of deep striking from your army. After seeing your list I expected to see terminators popping up on objectives. You should post more battle reports though. It's always nice to see two armies clashing.

Rough loss Knightley but a good report. May I recommend taking some close-up action and model's-eye-view shots next time. It really breaks up the narrative (in a good way) and allows us to see your fantastic models in action.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/07/10 22:56:39

Post by: Knightley

@Graven - I wanted to try a very elite army so terminators dreads etc, so the biggest downfall was not having a lot of troops and having large point sinks for little pay off (IE one NDK getting to shoot once taking out 4 scouts then dying, not worth is points cost) getting involved in a thumping match with thunder hammers was also a big mistake, I should have left the NDK to the terminaors and ran my guys up the board more. The Vindicare was a last minute addition and he was the reason I built the admech dreadnaught, because I found the assassins shooting to be very lack lustre. I've done a battle with elite heavy it didnt go as well as I planned, so now I can change the layout and see what happens next.

@Ice - I've tried deepstriking against LDP before with some paladins and they got shot to hell and back and I lost a lot, ever since then every time I've deep struck models they've not lasted very long, perhaps I'm putting them in the wrong places to be effective? I'd love to do more BR's its just about getting time to play

@LDP - Stomped is probably the wrong word, taking out 2 terminators and immobilizing a Rhino does not a stomping make it was a good game and even though it was a pasting I still had a ton of fun.

@Gits - Fair call on the pictures, next time I'll do some more turn by turn action shots at low level, I am a sucker for a good narrative so of course it will have to involve good pictures!

Is that some free hand righting on the halberd? Maybe we can get a shot of that? Looking very clean and sharp as all ways!

And it a bit of both really, I want to go for a black robes and bleach bone (Whats the new equivalent) armor with red for the shoulder pads but I don't know how that will go and don't really have any test models (Or the paints) at the moment.

@Daxx - Yep, I'll see what I can do about getting a close up of the free hand for you With the color scheme why not google search the marine painter and see what bone with red shoulder pads will look like? its not exactly what you are after but could help visualize a tiny bit.

@Graven - Thanks mate!

@Gits - Both of the NDKs should be quite nice as central figure point.... ooh i need to do another picture of both NDK's side by side!

@Bigfish - Cheers

Update: Now that Casey's competition is done I'll post up my guy with the WIP's and why I painted him up like I did!
For the competition
Spoiler:

And with him done

And for me He gets a sheild and becomes an inquisitors crusader!
Spoiler:

After getting the model in hand I had intended for this guy to be painted up in camo on a large tropical base, but I put him in the base and put him on the shelf and noticed he was the same height as my marines.... then the gears started to turn and I used a fantasy spider shield and trimmed off the spider bits added the inqusition sigil and painted him up as one of the inquisitor retinue!

And done with the stormsheild

Excellent job on the DKnight mate! And I really love your PanO miniature, he fits in really well with your GK with that paint scheme. It's worth mentioning how tiny the details are on him, makes it much more impressive!

I finally got back to your Warcraft post btw, sorry about that delay. Scarily I have been getting a real hankering to play again but I'm not going to let myself.

@Matt - Thanks Matt!

@Daxx - IIRC the later versions have assault marines/terminators/veterans as part of the templates, so a veteran with robes might be your best bet.

@Graven - Yeah, there was no denying my model when you see it next to all the rest, I guess that's a good thing you can identify my painting anywhere

@Casey - No worries about the delay, you think the WoW addiction was bad, you haven't heard about the Diablo 2 addiction that was before it!

@Gits - Hehe, I was very sneaky sneaky about it as well, got I love magnets!

Update: Picture for Daxx and a the two NDK's side by side.

Beautiful! Out of interest, are DKs particularly wide in the flesh? I always see them as too chunky for my taste but it might just be how they come across in pictures.

@Gits - Thanks, I probably could have given it another coat or two of black wash to darken it up, but the effect is there

@Casey - Not really that wide, they are a pain to move any where if the top of the body isn't glued on to the legs, but for transporting in a case it has to be separated at the middle.

@Daxx - Cool, my suggestion with parts painting, come up with a way to paint the piece without having your hand on it, I use a flying stand with a piece of wire and a hole drilled into the piece I'm painting, it stops me getting finger prints onto the part.

Update: Purifier marine started

Also I may stop this guy as a good gaming mate of mine has asked me to paint forge worlds Fulgrim, so I'm very excited about that.

@Daxx - There will be bloo.... erm purple, the guy just needs to drop off the model first and I can get started.

@Casey - release the hounds, lets stir up some wild life and kick start this party.. I have no idea what that means but just go with it

Update: first coat of the dark grey applied.

@Casey - Heh I get where your coming from, there must be only so much "looking good" you can lead with, why not start up a random topic and we can talk about it and with an added bonus of a model being posted at the end (of course this applies to anyone who wishes to start up a random conversation)

@LDP - Gosh, I started this blog in 2010, 3 years of clean and crisp, I can see why people want to see different stuff from me.

@Daxx - Cool, point me at the pictures when you post them and I can offer my input if you want it.

Haha! I just worry that it must sound insincere after a while. I follow your blog pretty consistently so I obviously really like your work but I can only say it so many times before it seems like a programmed reaction. Hence I take little breaks to just ask you questions and make bad jokes. It's the cross you must bear for being so prolific a contributor to the Dakkasphere.

@Daxx - Bugger, I joined in 2010 but started this in 2011, my mistake, but still a long time to be painting one army!

@Casey - Consistent posting does have its downfalls when there is little variation on what is posted. I for one love a bad joke or two, my partner would confirm this without hesitation and would go so far as to say all my jokes are bad, but that's why she is with me

Update: Should be getting Fulgrim tonight so stay tuned for the coming weeks! In the mean time, completed the Purifier

I really like the way they created his display base. It's really ingenious.

Doesn't Fulgrim come with multiple arm choices? If so, what are you going to pick?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/07/22 20:58:36

Post by: Knightley

@Ice - Its a very nice base, but they did screw the pooch on one bit, if you glue the bigger base bits down, you can't get the smaller base out. Sadly Fulgrim doesn't come with multiple arm choices, he just gets the laer blade.

@Daxx - I personally wont get any (too expensive) but if anyone wants me to paint their ones I would be happy to

@Vent - Thanks man, loved your Tyberos model btw

Update: Started the assembly of Fulgrim, my god this guy is fiddly, the little extensions to his tabbard and shoulder bits are a nightmare!

The Purifier is great, much warmer than the rest which will be nice on the table to get that stand out quality you wanted.

Fulgrim time! It's nice to see you work on more challenging miniatures and flex your painting muscles.

Post by: Nashbashem

Ah some great work as yet again occurred since I've been gone And a Primarch to boot! I'm positive he will look epic once he's done.

He turned to chaos eventually and now so will you
I'd love to see you give a crack at the Loken and Abbadon set.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/07/24 23:01:33

Post by: Knightley

@Daxx - Such a change painting purple, I've not had much practice at it so, hopefully, it will come together in the end.

@Casey - Challenging is a bit underrated, this guy is mental...

@Nash - Yeah you go away for a little bit and the whole world turns to the ruinous powers If someone wants me to paint Loken and Abbadon I would consider obliging

Update: So because this model has so much detail I figured I would focus on the base first. First the gravel/stone was base coated with adeptus battlegrey, then given a drybruch of codex grey and a raised edge highlight/dry brush of admisitratum grey, the troopers were base coated in purple and the whole lot was then coated with devlan mud, to hopefully give it a dirty look about it (that and I'm running very very low on Badab Black) After the wash was try (I ended up doing some tiling the bathroom) I layered on a 50/50 purple base/Warlock Purple leaving recesses in my typical darker shade. The Iron warrior got a coat of black with adeptus battlegrey edge highlights and boltgun metal which was then washed black and left to dry.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/07/25 20:39:53

Post by: Knightley

Next up is more work on the base. The skulls got 2 coats of bone and a white highlight, the eyes on the marines got a quick shade, layer, highlight + white dot. Any silver bits got edge highlighted and the Emp children got a warlock purple edge highlight.

@Daxx - Funny enough that's not far off why I want money as well!

@Casey - Thanks dude

Update: Got some time on the face. I started with a tallarn base and a wash of ogryn flesh over the whole face and a purple wash around the eyes (because you know, fulgrim was that way inclined) I then layered on a 50/50 of Dwarf Skin and Elf Skin, after that was dry I layered on a direct layer of Elf skin, trying to catch the raised edges of the face, such as nose, eye brows cheek bones etc. Once that was dry then I did a final touch up of 50/50 white and elf skin. Now before you all comment on the hole on his chin, its hidden on the lower lip of his armor so dont freak out

@Casey - drip feeding, hopefully keeps people a little interested over time.

@Graven - Surprisingly I only paint with GW paints - I'm quite the fanboy it seems, its was a yellow base normal gold over the top and sepia wash, the aim is to have a nice bright gold at the end.

Update: the 50/50 mix of purples is applied, I also put some brown on his gloves as I wasn't a fan of the black done in the FW pics

@Graven - Doing my darnedest to get through as much as I can before the little tacker arrives!

@Casey - I think there will be another 2-3 pushes before the 12,000 points are done, I'm up to 8000+ at the moment, doing about 2000 points per push (at last guess)
I want to try my hand at some Chaos Lords, some Deamons and some Necrons, so they will be a little buffer before going back to the sea of Grey again.

Update: Second Stage Grey done

Post by: Knightley

@Graven - Hopefully you've seen the pic I shared on Facebook of my little guy? if not let me know and I'll send it through to you

@Gits - Thanks

@Casey - Yeah putting them all out it was quite an eye opener, it was interesting as I keep them all in travel cases and it sneaks up on you how much plastic crack you have got sitting around

@Miss Dee - Yep, I have 5 scouts I plan on making up, Hope to make the Sgt as a Telion counts as

Update: so I'm not dead, but I am rather tired, my little guy is quite vocal when he is hungry, and he is hungry a lot! I did manage to get about 3 hours to myself while he was asleep taking off mould lines and taking stock of what I'm going to try slap on this Felblade
So first up is the hull, there are three things I'd like to do, change the demolisher cannon for a more Spacemarine one, the turret on the left I want to replace it with a Razorback Turret with Psycannon upgrade. At the rear I want to put in the Vindicator fan accessory in place of IG version

Second up is the parts I got from Machinator over a year ago so they got cleaned up (after the pic was taken)

Last up is the main turret and possible ideas, Now I was thinking a TL Gatling Psylincer, having Chronus as the tank commander and plenty of missiles!

I am very open to ideas about conversion ideas, fire away!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/24 10:47:32

Post by: inmygravenimage

Looks good and yeah, saw the little guy how about sponsors with flamestorm cannons as heavy incinerators? Maybe replace the ig demolisher with a vindicator cannon? Also how about a whacking great plough on the thing? Like 3 Chimera ploughs lined up?
...
You wanted ideas!

Ah... the joys of daddyhood. (don't get me started... Thing 1 had colic)

I like the plow idea... or how about some kind of mechanical battering ram built into the hull?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/25 09:03:03

Post by: Knightley

@Graven - I can do one better I have FW heavy incinerator sponsons for a Landraider as well as the assault launchers I figure I can try convert the launchers into the body above the main tracks somehow. The vindicator cannon will indeed replace the IG version I just have to figure out how to do that. I'll have to look into the bits box to see if I have any chimera dozer blades. Here's another conundrum, the main turret, what if I don't want gatling psylincers and want some form of heavy psycannon, what could I use for that? I also want to put a driver infront of the left most turret but I'm not sure what it will look like, so very hesitant on cutting if it won't look good, thoughts?

@Briancj - Thanks mate!

@Gits - Oooh ouch, his cries cut to the soul when he's loosing his gak over hunger, I couldn't imagine what having colic would be like. A Battering ram, that's an interesting idea, like protrusions from the wheel arches? or just a giant nose out the centre?

No pics today, camera was out with the little guy and the mrs

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/25 10:54:32

Post by: Gitsplitta

Actually either. I was thinking kind of a mechanical ram that stuck out the front and the "disappeared" under the hull, but your protrusion idea might be easier to make and would look pretty cool. Not sure you'd want the ram protruding from the relatively thin metal around your treads (one ram and you'd immobilize yourself).

This looks promising indeed, love the planning. Sorry but I'm not very fluent in tank or rules so I don't have much input to give. Looking forward to seeing what you do though. I finally got an update up on those marines btw. It's my first real foray into the world of the tank funny enough.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/29 07:29:51

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - True, i have to look through the bits box to see what I have, I have a specific idea in mind but may lack the bits for it.

@Casey - Neither do I heck I put an IG Leman Russ Battle Cannon on a Rhino Hull. I'm going for the rule of cool instead nice work on the Rhino chassis btw

Update: I got side tracked, so very badly side tracked.
First up I cut out the centre Turret hole and fit the Machinator bit. I also used the Dremel to expand the front hole to fit a Razorback turret

Then I went off the rails. I wanted to find a specific bit to use on the hull and I last recalled it being in one of the Rhino containers, 2 days later and I've made up three Rhino/Razorbacks and have been working on another side project

I noticed I have a Leman Russ track section and bottom of the hull

So.....I figured I could make a tank with it below is the rear bit done

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/30 02:05:37

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - You betchca, and I figure as I'm not tied into a push this time I can do what I want

@Casey - Yeah, and I still haven't stopped, I also figured since I have a cheat way to paint tanks I may as well do them all.

Update: The hull is done - very fiddly, but a ton of fun to build!

Now I have an idea on how to put on the side sponsons, using magnets hidden on the tracks

I however need ideas on how to put an Auto cannon on the turret, do I try a TL approach? build it into the bottom front? Do I make it modular and have options?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/30 02:52:25

Post by: IceAngel

Cool Knightley. I like the direction you're taking that tank.

Were you able to mount the auto cannons onto the sides of the turret, or perhaps put both on one side and some sort of optic targeter thing on the other side.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/31 10:24:15

Post by: Knightley

@Ice - Tiz a good idea, I ran with a TL version below on either side of the turret

@Gits - Thanks, and yep there was some ideas taken from the battle tank

@LDP - Almost a mini landraider, I should have gone with the set up of a land raider

@Graven - Thanks for the offer matey, but I'm good for the moment, I needed a smaller turret to fit on the top, the SM turrets are a bit larger size wise.

@Bigfish - Thanks dude, let me know what you think about the rest below

@WM - Bingo, I love the look of the new tank and did quite a bit of artistic licence from it, awesome set up aye

Update: apart from the tracks being on and some Greenstuff work the basic superstructure is done I also shortened the side sponson arms to bring it up a bit more. Let me know what you think!

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/08/31 11:58:30

@WM - Agreed, I think part of the reason they look so weak is the connector to the heavy bolter is just two longish arms, I've shortened them up so once its painted hopefully it will look way better

@Nash - Thanks dude

Update: Just a shot of the three Rhino/Razorbacks

Cheers Casey!

Back at work now after two weeks off so if I thought it was going slowly before, not it might be glacial. However I also located a Landraider I started converting back in 2005 and brought him out to finish off as well, this is the body of what was done, there is a predator turret to go on the top somewhere I just need to find it

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2013/09/02 00:28:38

Post by: Casey's Law

Pal, your glacial speed is significantly faster than me on full throttle. And yet another tank appears! The front drop door is nicely detailed, it actually looks fit for purpose.

Just wondering, is there a reason to put the tracks on later? I put mine on as per the instructions because I didn't want to go off book since I haven't built a tank in many years.

I did stumble onto a good tip though which might be of use assembling all of these beasts. The first tank I built was a nuisance because the glue would dry before I finished putting it on the whole section to be glued. I had to layer it up. For the second two I prepared all of the pieces and put the applicator to one side. Instead I used a big old brush which held enough glue to quickly cover the sections, the actual construction only took a couple of minutes each doing it that way. Massive time saver.

Post by: Knightley

@Casey - Tracks being put on later are a throw back from when I was 11, I used to prime the tanks white, but the treads black then silver drybrush them, its how I did it back then and it became common place to do it now. I should probably look at updating how I do things soon hehe. Also nice tip on the glue, I'm generally pretty quick when it comes to getting glue on but I'm storing that one in the back tank of tips to use for later

@Daxx - Still alive bud, not a lot of modeling done so far as the little guy tends to fuss quite a bit and sitting with dad keeps him quiet so things are on pause for the mean time. I did however put together a Drop pod and started messing up the defiler conversion, taken off all the chaos spikes and other bits, just gotta figure out how to make some cool looking imperial feet might try get a picture of it this week for you.

Ah, it all makes sense now!

Yeh it's a handy tip if your glue is as thin as the stuff I use, it's Tamiya Extra Thin Cement and it just doesn't stick around for more than a few seconds using the little applicator.

@Daxx - Times are tough when you only get one night a week on modeling

@Casey - I like the idea behind it a large brush to get stuff on quickly, I might have to try it with my normal painting

@Nash - Well I semi hate them, but there is some really awesome conversion vehicles so I hope they will keep me interested while I deal with the Rank (or should that be Tank) and file models

@Igice - Wow, thank you for the kind words stay tuned, I'm on a bit of a slow pace right now but I hope to get more time to paint when the little tacker goes to bed earlier and earlier.

Update: model making time tonight, I hope to get through stripping paint from the Chaos Characters and some build process on the defiler conversion, I may come to you all for some feet ideas (you'll have to wait and see what I mean) Till tomorrow!

@Ice - Heh, why not extrapolate on this concept, I've I factor the brush up to 10x normal size, I could paint 10x the number of models at the same time. I like this idea!

@Igice - Cheers for the words of encouragement!

Update: So I got a ton of time (compared to the last month and a bit at least) to model so the results are below.

Cleaned up the chaos lords

Threw some magnets and some bits onto the landraider
Front

Side

Top

Then started to finish up the defiler/dread conversion. Please note the plates for the legs are getting the gaps filled so they aren't attached at the moment.
Legs front

Legs rear

Legs Top

The Torso got a work out as well
Front

Top

Then tried some weapon loadouts

Missile launcher

TL AC

I ran into a bit of a stumbling block, what do I put in the top hatch of the defiler/dread I have a plate from the head, but I tried a few idea (search lights but they look liked eyes) a black cover looked boring. so fire away some ideas and I'll see what I can do

Ice? That's the second time I've been mistaken for someone else recently, haha. Am I so forgettable?!

But yes, I like this idea, make it so! Knowing you it'd still look both crisp and grey.

The LR and Defiler look insane, in a good way of course! I'm particularly excited for the Defiler as it appears to be a very original and creative conversion. You've already captured a solid Imperial, military aesthetic which I'm very fond of.

Those old chaos boys are exciting, reminders of earlier days and worthy of your loving care. The anticipation is palpable...

Colour me interested in the Grey Knight walker-thingy

Hmm, maybe an angry commander yelling out of the top hatch? Maybe another weapon? That could work, though I'm unsure what weapon you could put up there

@Casey - Gah, blame baby brain everything doesn't make sense any more I also found an arhiman model to clean and repaint, so that should be a bit of fun

@Igice - Yep, they are nothing if altruistic, always needs must and currently the need the lascannons up front

@Matt - Might see if I can get another weapon slapped up in there, just not sure which one.

@Nash - Thanks!

Update: wow, two weeks since I last put something up, fear not I haven't been idle just check out below, up for comments and criticisms

@Igice - Hahah, need to model a pumpkin grenade into his hand eh?

@Graven - Have to give the impression its a GK Felblade somehow eh

@Daxx - Thanks man!

@LDP - You "shouldn't" face it unless we partake in an apoc game but who's to say that wont happen either

@Miss Dee - Paint should be put on it in the next month or so, just have to finish up the sponsons (see below) do some GS fix up work, then its onto painting!

Update: Got a good model session done last night, put on the treads onto the tank, then started on the side sponsons, results below

First up are the changes to the central body - new targetiong/machine spirit bit and some gubbins stuck on

Next up are the sponsons - all of them

Now for the frontal sponsons, plastic card work is tough, trying to get it all smooth and strait

And then the back sponsons

C&C welcome as always

@Igice - Cheers

@NF09 - Yeah I'm hanging out to get some paint on these suckers, I suspect my cheat mode will make all this very quick to paint, here's hoping.

@Nash - I do want to get more time to paint/model, but the little guy is taking up a fair amount of time, but he's worth it.

Update: Apologies for the lack of updates, been wondering where all my spare time at night has gone to, I've not been idle, I promise

Walker has been mostly assembled, some GS to add but happy with how it has come out

Landraider, again some GS left to add on and again happy with how it came out, I changed out the dual assault cannons on the front gun to a TL psycannon from FW

And now for the Behemoth - Macro Psycannon and frontal heavy incinerators

And with the TL gatling psylincers

Merry Xmas all.

Just a quick update on what's been going on down here in Knightleys world.

I've currently on 3 months paternity leave looking after my little guy full time. I had to hand back my work laptop (the one I use to upload all the pictures you see here in the blog) so for those who think I've stopped..... Boy do you have a surprise brewing.

So a quick wordy update. All the tanks and walkers have had an army painter light grey base coat followed up with the right grey over spray using the gw spray gun. I've done the light grey edge highlights on the fel blade and started doing the silver bits. There is a lot of them.

Got horribly sidetracked by moving house which has allowed me to have my own large gaming room. So I have made a modular gaming table (Pics to come) I also then have spent a week doing scenery (again more Pics to come) however all of this is unpainted.

Moving house has allowed me to pull out my old armies, the dark angels from my youth and the ultramarine a from my time in the army. I then have my brother over from Canada for 3 weeks so we've had some games and now I want to fix up both of those armies to be mirrors of each other. After 2 days of faffing about I realise I just need to buy 1 tac squad, a bike squad and a vindicator then I will have 3200 points of each force with matching hardware and accessories. The armies having gone into a simple green dip for 6 days while I'm away from home over Xmas.

To aid me in the massive amounts of painting I was given a compressor and a 2 stage gravity fed air brush for Xmas, and I am hanging out with a vengeance to get home and get into it.

So please continue to be patient and you will be rewarded with a mountain of pictures soon enough.

Have a wicked holidays.

Knightley

Edit: gah posting on an iPad blows

So much cool stuff I bet painting that Baneblade is going to be a challenge in its own right

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2014/02/19 00:51:20

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - oh yes, and requires a ton of paint as well!

@Gaven - I'm glad you like it, the AA turret is made up from the TL-AC from a contemptor dreadnought and the circular bit is from the aegis defence line

@Nash - oh yes, massive challenge!

Update: so typically I get side tracked a lot, below is what got me side tracked yet again, there will be bits in a different color to represent things I learned from the process and if I were to do it again I would do it again differently.

GAMING TABLE!!!!

Yep, you read it right, I decided I was going to make a modular table that could be taken down and stored with the minimum space required so I went about coming up with a design I think fits the bill, I did some online checking of prices and materials and hit the ground running.

First up were the raw materials
The top boards

And the other materials to support it

If I were to do this again I would have cut the top boards my self, as I have a small car I would not have been able to get a full board back home so in the above instance I asked the staff at the home depot to cut the board for me, unfortunately the size of the boards varied quite a bit some edges were 2ft others were an inch shorter on a side, this means the board isn't quite 6ft by 4ft. The things you learn eh?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2014/02/19 19:28:36

Post by: Knightley

Next up is a singular board, most of them are 2ft by 2ft, but there is variation due to the cuts done by the pleb at the hardware store, Each board has a 90 degree bracket in each corner for making it more rigid, the top was first drilled, then glued before being screwed down, again to make it rigid and the result was exactly what I had in mind. The screws in the top were also countersunk just a little to keep the heads flat with the board, this means when its painting you wont be able to tell where the screws are.

Top

Underside

Things I learnt from this stage: The top board was very very easy to sand back, so in hindsight I would have cut the base boards to from the 2ft square and sanded any over hand back to square. the underside I was pretty happy with, getting the screws in wasn't easy because I kept hitting my knuckles on the boards due to having a small tool I swear this hasn't happened to me before...

As long as your tool is big enough to get the job done...

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2014/02/20 19:12:14

Post by: Knightley

I figured I was doing it wrong because my knuckles hurt at the end. Oh well that's one thing being a young teenager taught me, if you want everything to come together you have to knuckle through it

So next up actually took place over two weeks, looking after a tiny wee human can be demanding on your time, and made much harder when he falls asleep on your chest, 2-3 hours just sitting there listening to him sleep, pretty darn magical if you ask me

I got 4 boards done

Then I got all six completed - followed up by drilling the holes for the bolts to line up with each other then put it all together.
Top view

Bottom View

The toughest bit here ended up being I wanted to get this part done before it got to dark outside, I rushed the dilling of the holes for the bolts and as a consequence one or two of them don't line up as I would have liked. If I do it again, I would wait till better light

oooh Legs ....

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2014/02/22 04:08:48

Post by: Knightley

I do love me some legs

Oh speaking of legs, guess what's next!

Now that the table was done I needed to bang something up to keep the table off the ground, I had considered getting run of the mill trestle table legs, but after checking out the back of the shed I noticed I had quite a few cut offs from the deck. After a quick sketch and mock up I figured I could make my own and save me some money
Considerations for making these legs:
1: Had to have the table just below my hip so I could bend over the top
2: The leg spaces had to be wide enough to fit a GW case between them (additional storage locations)
3: Sturdy enough that you could accidentally lean on the table and not flip it over.

After a week (also moving house might I add!) I had made the 3 legs

And here it is in the new house Note the shelf in the background, very handy to store models and stuff on it.

There wasn't much I would have changed about this stage, Perhaps made the trestles a touch wider, they are currently 2ft wide with risers on them to stabilise the table from below. Being wider would mean there is less chance of it slipping around.

Post by: Miss Dee

Is there a face and body to go with the legs?

Post by: Knightley

Heh yep there is, there was even a small human attached to the central area at that time as well sadly Dakka doesn't count her as wargaming related :(

Update: Next up is some taping of all the sides, then lining out 12" from the centre line and lining out diagonal deployments as well, I used a pretty hefty tape with nylon running through it for extra protection.

The paint used is an acrylic house paint that I was told is very hardy and difficult to chip, perfect!

After I had done two coats I then added ballast to a smaller pot and started adding texture to random places on the board, once that was dry out came the large old brush and I threw some dry brushing at it, two stages, snakebite brown then bleached bone. I then put some ogryn fleshwash into the airbrush and went over all the textured bits. what I didn't take a picture of was I then did some black to make scorch marks, but you'll see that in later pics.

I learnt the most at this stage. The tape while an awesome idea didn't form a good base for the paint to stick to. If I were to do it again I wouldn't use the tape for anything on top of the board. Then with the paint I wouldn't have mixed sand in with the paint as I ended up with sparse coverage at points where there should be. If I were to do it again I would do one base coat, start the second but throw sand on the bits I wanted to be textured then do another coat over the top of that sand.

@Graven - Cheers matey, I've changed the coloring for you, I use the white scheme for Dakka so I can sneak a look at work without getting to conspicuous

Update:

Added flock to the boards, and in these pics you can see the black used for scorch marks.

All done

This part was pretty self explanatory, however had I known how much grass I would have gone through I would have got another container as some of the later sections of board have less grass on them. Another thing I learned and had to fix later was adding a varnish or hairspray over the grass so it didn't come off when touched

And all finally done

Also found a picture of some of the terrain making I did one week - FYI the terrain isn't painted just yet so no more pics till its done

@Graven - well its more like many little things, see below

@Whale - that got a great chuckle out of me, had my work mates looking at me quite weirdly.

@LDP - That was a pretty awesome game though, it was a draw IIRC?

@Dantay - Thanks mate, greatly appreciated.

Update: well what was the other thing that kept me off my Grey Knights? those who peruse my gallery at great length will recall I have two other marine armies, you know ones that I had painted when I was 14 and 19 year old.

You remember don't you?

no?

I may have glossed over that but here is a refresher
14 yo me was awesome

19 yo me was just as cool

So while my brother was over from Canada eh, we had a marine vs marine game and he used the UM's and I used the DA's at the end of the game he made the suggestion it would have been cool to face the exact same army as the one he was using, thus was born the next large project, making two armies the same point value, then painting it and playing with it. after a quick whip around I realised all I needed to buy was a vindicator, 3 bikes and a Tactical squad. Once that was brought I did a tally up and both armies were mirrors of each other at 3100 points, not bad eh?

So into the simple green for six days they went (the DA's had many many many coats to get through) and I started the clean up process

An extremely messy 3 weeks let me tell you!

Post by: Knightley

So I got all the models in a state ready for priming

Then waited for my spray primers to turn up and got to work

I made a mistake and figured the scouts should get a blast of bone before their armour, if I were to do it again they would get armour first then I would paint on the bone.

Agreed, when I put them all out on the table I was quite overwhelmed with how much I had assigned myself to paint.

I closer view below

Next up is my trials with the airbrush (in an effort to save myself some serious time)

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2014/03/03 19:20:42

Post by: Knightley

Seeing as I now have an airbrush, I figured I would do some coats and see how it goes.

Blue

Bone to white

Red - blood red

White

Well I was very happy with how well the color came out on all the models, seeing how well you can do highlights to armor I would have added a lighter tone to a darker base

@Gits - Yes, yes, yes and yes, very hooked. I'm surprised I took this long to get an airbrush after zipping through 6200 points of marines in only a couple of days!

@M0rdain - Many thanks for the compliments, air brushes...... should be a staple for any painter!

Update: So what did I want these armies to look like? Well I wanted a quick table top quality not like my Grey Knights, I brought a tub of Quick shade and resolved to use that as the final coat. Weapons are painted red, there is silver on guns and bits on the back pack, purity seals are red for the wax and bone for the paper, skulls are bone, eyes are red. Chapter and squad markings are done by hand (because I didn't have nearly enough transfers) faces are base, highlight then wash, no eyes/teeth etc

So as a reminder:

These are all going to be Table top standard!

First up a squad of Dark Angels that I completed in an afternoon

Good idea on two same armies, good for teaching and fun even games.

Wow you're getting through all of this stuff quickly. I thought this would have taken forever and here you are with like 15 squads done.

Cheers Ice, don't forget this is what I did while having 3 months off from work, so while you are seeing the compact version of it, it did take about a month and a half to paint all 6,200 points

Next up is smoe dreads, command squads and characters

@Gits - Yeah, and weight wise, the old predator has a ton of metal on it, where as the new one is all plastic.

@Miss Dee - I have to do my airbrushing in the garage for that exact reason.

Update: Lastly is the landraiders and vindicators

Sounds like no airbrush for you then, well until you move to a location that is fit for purpose

Update: Next is a GMS model for our very own Iceangel! I took a Dark Vengeance Terminator Sgt and went about removing as much of the DA paraphernalia, changed out the sword and attached on a reaper autocannon from the chaos terminators (of course taking the chaos bits away)
From something like this
Spoiler:

To this

You missed the GIANT WINGS on him when you removed the DA stuff

I'm really impressed with the autocannon, didnt know it could clean up so well.

Beautiful mate. Bare plastic alone and it's a thing of crunchy goodness.

@WM360 - Heh yeah you know me with wings and scribbles, gotta have it all, Ice didn't raise any concerns when I showed him the WIP2 pic so I've decided to run with it The autocannon was the really big risk, not knowing if I could remove enough chaos from it to still have it look like a working cannon.

@Graven - Cheers mate, much appreciated!

@Miss Dee - Sounds like your cat is on the anti smoking bandwagon

Update: now with paint I tried to highlight the black by using a 50/50 adeptus battlegrey/black mix then using badab black to darken it down a bit, I think it works ok in this case.
