Great work mate. Love the storm talon. How do you make grey so interesting!?
Revivers look fantastic. Time for some Imperial Fists?
Also...want to recognise the quality photos. I know that’s not the objective here but they really are nice and clear, and glare free.

Usually I'M not a huge fan of painting the clear platic canopies (I also like cockpits too much to cover them up), but it goes really well with the strong cartoonish look on the space sharks here. Looks very mechwarrior.

Post by: bebopdrums2424
Hey everybody! Thanks for all the interest again!
@Sigur: a rare delight...always a fan of your prolific work. Cheers
@cam: definitely don’t know anything except that painting always reminds me I don’t know nothin about nothin!!!
@San: it will be a long time before I have a desire to paint yellow again...and if I do it, I’m gonna Have to learn a different way of painting it. This way it was just too laborious.
@ inevitable faith: thanks man! I am definitely pleased with the final product and happy to mainly have just completed it to a standard that I’m not utterly disappointed with!
This next update combines a few finished projects, in regards to the space sharks. I finished the last 2 of 5 primaris intercessors, and two out of three of the inceptors. I also finished the primaries captain! This model was quite fun however this will probably be the last time I ever paint a head that is glued onto the model. Especially in this case It was a stupid move to glue it on before painting. Oh well, I made up for it by having some fun on the power fist! These models are really fun to paint and I’ve got it down to pretty
much a science now I could do the scheme on any model in the army. Progress! :-)
Cheers guys!

Nice job, BB. Looking excellent. Especially the captain. That translucent white stripe on the fist really gives it a shiny look.

Post by: bebopdrums2424
THanks Dr H i was definitely going for that!! Glad it registers
Finished up the last of the 3 inceptors from the know no fear box. I just gave up on that stupid ass lift and stuck a rod in. Ill redo all three bases like this so they are uniform but i cant be worried about the slightest knock about with these dudes so precariously perched on this plastic hand. Fk that. ALSO beginning WIP of the biggest project so far for this army. The crown Jewel. The Primaris Librarian. A super cool mini and not cheap. So im giving this one all the TLC. I could use some advice on how to tie him in.... HIs armor is a richer blue nmm than the usual darker blue, ill still have all the aqua glows and bits which are represented on every model, but any thoughts on the grey? I might just have to leave it to the chapter insignia...the robes will be the same black that the other two character models are,

That leg looks unbelievable! Lib is coming along really well. I'd be inclined to reserve the grey chapter colours for the shoulder and perhaps a knee? I personally don't advocate for straying too far from codex displays of where marine colours belong.
But that's just the way i'd do it! And by no means can I replicate paint work anywhere near your standard - so obviously at the end of the day the choice is yours! You have the mini in front of you, do what you think feels best.

Lovely work, BB.
From what I'm aware, librarians tend to only have the shoulder pad in the chapter colour. I'm not familiar enough with the model to know what else might be possible to colour beyond that.
46466
Post by: San76
Librarian is looking amazing from what I can see! I’m terms of tying him in, given the different finish on his armour, could you tie him in with grey cloth?

Post by: bebopdrums2424
You guys thanks for the encouragement and the feedback!! Since everyone had such good input, i pretty much took everyones advice.
@whaley: Head choice, thanks to you, paintined to match my shark helmets. Opted out of unhelmeted version
@LDP/DrH: Shoulder pad (knee was too crucial to nmm to give up for chapter colors )
@San: when just shy of black for the robes to keep it more sharky.
@Gits and Knightley! Thanks fellas
OK so hes done. AND since i took a ton of pics i couldnt decide on a favorite angle so im just dumping them all here and in no particular order. Stoked to have my 3rd character painted up for the army!!
Cheers you guys....next up 10 intercessors.

I endorse the forum feedback because comments and smaller communities like Dakka provide far more characteristic feedback on stuff even if its more infrequent than people liking photos. Christ, i'm only 21 and I feel like a venerable dreadnought speaking like this! Nevertheless, while insta is great for the quickfire dopamine hits from loads of likes and lots of followers, I truly appreciate the feedback from people on the forums; the criticism is constructive and the interest is passionate.
Sharks look slick as ever bebop, I do get to benefit from the joy of following you on two platforms now, so that's a good thing i'd kill for a 'uge army shot!

Post by: bebopdrums2424
To be clear, the reason i post here is because of the human connection. My friends on dakka are a huge part of my growth as a painter. However, many are actually now on other forms of media which is a lot more immeadiate, especially when sharing WIP. As far as feedback, i find my insta account again to have much more access to painters in general, and its much easier to get feedback from people in specific. Especially from painters that just wont be in here for whatever reason. Either way, thanks for the perspective, and of course an army shot is on the way

Yep This is how I feel too about the forums, I have a much more close knit group who actively hang out to see what I (and others) paint and I feel it's much more honest than FB and I don't like Instagram so even though I'm a little absent due to a much busier work life at this point in time I always try and drop in to see what's been happening on the threads and it comforts me as I see familiar 'faces'
I do sometimes whack a pic on FB for opinion or if it is a wip to show others who collect the same army but my heart lies with Dakka

I much prefer posting here on DDakka, as well as reading (looking at pretty pictures) what others have done, than on FB. I don't get anything more than a few "likes" and "good job" comments on my FB posts (even when I share them to multiple groups), whereas I get proper feedback on DD. But then I only post finished pieces to my FB page, so it's not all that often for my 59 followers (still more regular updates than my 59 YT followers get They only get FO4 settlement walkthroughs). My main problem with social media is that a post is only for that instant, after a couple of hours it may as well not exist, there's no going back over past posts, they've been buried by all the new posts. It's no wonder all the pages I follow are constantly re-posting old things... maybe I should start doing that... It's just so... messy though.

From a painting perspective he looks great! From a model perspective some weird choices. Not sure if you assembled it or it came that way, but the arms are upside down (making th ammo feeds backwards) and the missing missile pods look a bit strange.
47942
Post by: bebopdrums2424
THe model was built incorrectly when I got it. It was either this or the ammo box’s floating in mid air. This was the less offensive choice in my opinion, seeing as the boxes miraculously slotted properly upside down. My only guess is the client built it this way accidentally. Oh well

Thanks Dr H ! Not sure when it drops but im excited for it!
in the meantime i have finished my stormcast eternal, Severin Steelheart. Spent a bit o' time with this one, and as usual focused on painting things that make me uncomfortable or intimidate me! in this case, BRONZE nmm! yikes >_< ... and also a very dark flesh skin tone! With alot of purple and mint green in it! the head has seen some controversy, even boarding a little social insensitivities...either ways, I may revisit the head to push a few highlights up but I’m pleased enough with it and also a certain point one just needs to move on the base I wanted to look more desert sandstone so I clipped off all leaves and vines . Anyways I hope you like, definitely a fun challenge and as I said I’m not mad it

Holy , bebop - you just keep raising the bar... I think the most admirable things about your work (aside from the sheer level of talent/skill) is that (like you mentioned previously) you keep finding ways to challenge yourself and then turning those into things you excel at.
As to this guy in particular: I LOVE the monochromatic look of the armor and base with the brilliant blue/purple standing out against it. Really nice complement and contrast at the same time. Your NMM technique is also amazing - that's something I find particularly difficult and it's essentially flawless here IMO.
My one (minor) quibble would be that I feel like his face could maaaaaaybe use something - another level of highlight, some white in the eyes, etc. His face is nicely done but gets lost a just bit among the gold of his armor.

Post by: Red Harvest
Very nicely done, Mr. B. Bop, nicely done indeed.
Now get to painting minis worthy of your skills.
Ah, the Bronze effect is very convincing. However... try an even stronger contrast on it, like what you've done with the sword. Practice and experiment first though. I think the effect would be dramatic in a good way.
It is very good as is. Don't let my C&C bring you down. I am an old curmudgeon these days.

@Gomez Thanks alot! I definitely try challenge myself with each mini! No Fear!!! Im studying your minis as im working on painting skin now and its very far from my comfort zone tbh, And i mean not, base coat, wash brown, then layer...i mean like you are doing it with purples and reds and all kinds of depth! Keep it up so i can learn too!
@Dr H: Ha, thanks man ! Im glad you noticed that was a fun little touch to do
@Cam: thanks dude!!
@Inevitable Faith: Thanks! Who are you on IG?? i like to know and make sure i follow my dakka buds, seems more personal on IG! or more immeadiate, which ever lol...( Ps if its a private thing you dont have to say! Just if you have a painting account there as well... )
@igTr Thanks alot !! Theres quite a few absolutely jaw dropping versions of this model which quite frankly i used three different versions as a guideline on how to paint certain parts. I learned alot studying them then trying to match it in a way but in my color scheme.

Yo all, just dropping in to leave a few wip photos on the olllll blog a boo....
Working on a chaos cultist from the Shadespire box, painting these new plastics from GW, in general, is just really a pleasure.
The skin is mostly done in area that seem finished, lol, the neck area is early wip, mostly because i need to see how the head is going to fit before i go full gd on it only to have it be hidden completely...
Things I’m focusing on here are adding more colors for depth. Green an purple glazes and reds on the skin, even the sword has a lot going on in terms of glazes with purple teal and red...
Have a look
Happy New Years everyone May 2019 bring alllllll the hobby goodness<3

An excellent start.
I tend to get that effect not on the back of my thumb, but rather on my thumbnail. (I use some paints with cadmium in them. I prefer to to get that on my skin.) I sometimes forget to wipe it all off. I get strange looks from people sometimes. It's to be expected with a thumbnail that looks like a Jackson Pollack painting.
Nice reference.

Hey you guys thanks so much for the encouragement. Glad you all like it, except Damo who seems to be driven to drinking, LOL,...me too bro me too....
SLAVE it’s basically a Wolf grey and a black, then a light blue grey added to that for highlights, plus white. Then a crap ton of glazes, of red, purple, blue and turqouise.
Well here’s a bit of an odd update. Ive decided to enter a kill team arena slow grow and I’ve got to get my army concept down. Most likely van saars counting as scions, but it’s mostly an excuse to field my favorite models in the GW line, the van saars. So i got to paint a solid 20 of them so it can be too crazy but here’s a my concept WIP table top quality van saar. Pretty happy with it but a lot of clean up needed especially on the gun, I’m going to reverse the chipping of the orange because i think its too much. Loses the structure of the orange pattern. A few other things, skin is mostly untouched,,,hands.....ALSO
Here’s some terrain i painted for my FLGS
And a the test van saar
I guess its a pretty cyber punky update
WELLLLL....
That’s all my friends!
Happy painting! Ill have an update on the van saar in the next few days

@ whale : no the first mini was just for fun to paint, but these will now be part of the kill team and this is just the first concert model. Though quite frankly I’m pretty pleased with the overall scheme so I’m going to move forward with it now that I’ve got it nailed down.
@ gits: Thanks man! No joke, it was super fun to paint! Incredibly relaxing and basically just a playground of throwing oil paint around. Plus I’ve wanted to do some cyber punk terrain for quite a long time, I have plans to do quite a lot more than just that one building.
Also hey! I finished the dude! Here he is! This was a pretty brisk paint for me, so not as smooth and a little dirty her and there, no prob I have to do approx 15 of em...they will look good en masse...
Right on, ill update with some wip of the next guy
Stay tuned

Hey Hey!!! Whats up you guys Sooooo....
Ive entered another comp at my FLGS. This one is a kill team arena comp and as for the picture in the last post, that was my test model but the concept has grown and i want to share with you my current project, which is alot more RP comprehensive than my usual just paint for painting sake.
Meet, The "Green Bug Gang." Imagine the blending of a DC/Batman Returns-esque ridiculous themed gang. plus cyber punk, set in the higher tech hoods of Necromunda. "Hey Bub, We're the Green Bug gang and we're gonna STOMP YOU.....for the emperor?!!"
Rules wise, Its a counts as Gene Stealer Cult list that looks like this:
1 Leader with Power Pick, Bolt Pistol / VAN SAAR CONVERSION + WINGS
+ DRAGONFLY
6 Gunners / VAN SAAR WITH LAS RIFLE
+TICK
+ROACH
+PEST
+SKEETER
+ANT
+RICARDO
2 Webbers / VAN SAAR W/ "MELTA"
+SPIDER
+WIDOW
2 Aberrants / AMBOTS
+SIR-E
+ALEX-A
1 Genestealer / INFINTY-ESQUE SPIDERBOT CONVERSION
+BOB
Ive had a few snags wth the process already so kinks are being ironed out but ive got the test model which ill post again just for recap, but you now must imagine the gun as the grey as the gun on the WIP models below. Because of modeling snafoos i dont want to build after painting and to do the white gun the way i did it, i would have to do that. The work around is choosing a more forgiving color to work with so ive chosen a cool, techy, greyish blue that counters the "mesh" color as well as the lime grreen while still playing nice with orange stripes As you can see, the helmet antennae too, will be a feature on a number of models. That was done quite easily by snipping the tips off the braid that comes with the kit and gluing on the head. finicky but not as bad as metal infinity models ok?? Other than that, the models are painted to a high tabletop level, but i still ultimately, spirtually i am just pushing through and not everything is as exact and precise as i would paint if it was only one model. The process here is essentially the same as my space sharks. Airgun the model in its base, shade and mild zenithal hightlights, then do everything else by hand. Green line armor plates, edge highlight battle damage, mesh etc etc. Getting the armor color down in one go is a bit time consuming with the gun because i have to keep cleaning and waiting for a coat to dry etc, but its still faster and cuts out the most tedious part of army painting. I dont think i could paint that many models the same color any other way frankly. Not for me. Lastly, i plan on doing a cyber-y sewery backdrop for them to be presented and maybe even a custom PDF/Comic book of the counts as rules with their own fiction and art. Maybe ill get to that. I Want to.... Any ways heres a smattering of pics so can see where im at here. And remember, bub, Dont mess with the Green Bug Gang, or youll get STOMPED
ANYWAYS, thats more game than i usually post here! Hope you all dig the idea,

Thanks you guys!! So, mannnn, I kinda bowed out of the comp on account of actually hating working with the van saar models that have guns crossing the chest. Pieces kept breaking off and I swear I scrapped 3 models due to modeling issues. Too flimsy. Great scheme, great idea, fun to paint, but for now I’ve back burned the idea and will finish itt st my own pace
Instead I’m back to paint practice. This may or may not interest you, but primarily focusing on a technique called color sketching,, placing light and dark then fixing as you go. First pic illustrates the idea, the rest are where I’m at currently. Notice I. Painted the highlight wrong on the foot. In pic one and was redone in the following pics. The back you can see some areas that haven’t been finished or totally smooothed out yet, or fully highlighted or edge lighted. I’m especially unsure of his butt armor and may redo. ... mannnnalll this is on my IG but I don’t think m/any of you follow me there. (i saw someone with the same I’d. As dr H and thought it was him. It wasn’t... lol) anyway a heres pics!

What? You mean the GitS laughing man logo? Yeah, I've seen quite a few people using that about the place. That's why I've moved away from using it on my social media profiles. I've thought about transitioning over here on DDakka, but then you all won't recognise me.

A nice anodized aluminum effect. Very cool. Good strong contrast. The one tip that I recall is for the extreme white highlights. The sharper the line, the smoother the surface looks. You are fairly close on the butt plates.
I very much want to see how this one turns out.

i! its an airbrushed coat of GW Moot Green. Then from underneath upwardsi airbrush a coat of Warpstone Green. Then i airbrush directly from above in halo, zenithal, a highlight of MootGreen + Dorn Yellow. Thats the base coat and everything elese is done by hand. . Then i line all armor plates etc with Sotek Green / Black / Water. THen edge hightlight with the Moot/Dorn Mix but add more and more white as i go. The airbrush i use is a 20$ Piece of crap from a hardware store, basically a glorified air gun.

Love the desaturated Scrivenger, pretty much the look I'm going for with my Khorne daemons. Is that really just white base + washes?
47942
Post by: bebopdrums2424
Thanks everyone!
Boss: Its VMC Light Blue Green basically washed over a grisaille undercoat. Or zenithal priming in the mini painting circles...white sprayed downwards from above over black. Creates a shadowed preshade. Then i wash over that with really thinned VMC light green blue....then i start glazing that with yellows, pinks, purples and blues...black glazes for enhancing shadowed or diseased areas... Then i mixed in VMC Ivory to the VMC Light green blue and pointed or did lines for texture to highlight certain areas...adding a touch of the home glaze color to it if im over a pink area etc etc....
all that to say,,,IT IS just glazing....and it isnt lol....

Hey guys thanks ALL for the interest!
I finished the Tau Riptide!!! yahooo. super fun. but now i want to do one that isnt a salvage job, go super hard and paint it before its built!! Please excuse the somewhat hasty photoshop skills....
My next real project is another Mantis Marine. the 2019 version. I dont know if you all remember the last one i did, this will be a different style. Like the ultramarine:
ALso, i posted this to the showcase but heres a bit about the contrast paints. got a chance to mess with them:
also had a chance to test out the contrast paints:
.im sure everyone has had their eye on whats going on with contrast paints, either with disgust or love. Ive seen alot of angles on them, and ive seen some absolutely amazeballs works done using them to some degree. Follow @daemonrich if you want your mind blown at what these paints can do in the right hands. Well, im not super into army painting and my test with them was to see how fast i could a single mini, and how bad it would look if i just went hard, sLoppy, no corrections, edge highlights all fat and etc etc, the whole 9, my ONLY goal, was speed.
The verdict: You decide? But this model took me 3 hours from start to finish: including priming. In fact, the paint drying (takes a little longer i think...like a heavy wash) is something that actually slows you down. Each color, except the brown i found to be a little weird to work with and its a bit of a mix of colors, is one coat heavy applied. i mean globbed the heck on. barely moved any pooling (again speed). Black, one coat. Yellow, one coat. Grey. one coat. Green. One coat. Then i just started doing some fast hightlights on top of it. And painted any details like eyes and shoulder pad etc etc normally. The time saved was pretty great and is it worth the quality lost? Personally, i think so. I dont enjoy the game as much when im precious with my models and i actually did one more right aftwards that day and i cant remember the last time i could do two models in one day and be cool with it. Its certainly not for everyone and it by no means replaces hard core brush techniques, but its damn fast and looks cool. I do have to say,,,,if you use an airbrush...im not sure how much time is saved tbh, but its a much different look obvi and in this case...i like it....
One thing to observe for those interested, on the bottom of the shark shoulder pad, i wanted to see if i would use a darker color to shade the model, so i tried a coat on top of the yellow, of the orange....as you can see its extremely bright and did not look good so i didnt proceed to do that. It seems that one coat of the stuff works well enough and provides enough contrast to work with without needing anything else. Maybe thinning it dramatically and using glazes with it...i havent experimented that far, but im of course interested....
AnYWAYS enough blab heres the poor SOB who will die to someones meta net list:
Cheers!! ID LOVE TO SEE WHAT YOU ALL COME UP WITH FOR CP!!!???
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Wow, that's stupidly impressive for only a few hours' work, one of the best endorsements for Contrast I've yet to see. Were the black stripes also done with Contrast? If they were, did you have any trouble keeping the lines neat or maintaining opacity over a much lighter base colour?
47942
Post by: bebopdrums2424
Thanks Paradigm....no the camo black was painted on with a brush, but its really random, i just kinda smash the brush when i want the camo line thicker, then i go in another direction with it. the only worry is to not do too much of it. Either way, that step is alot faster than maybe it appears. The contrast paints are like washes, you couldnt do that with them without having to do many many layers i would think.....

Post by: Paradigm
Thanks for clarifying, I suspected they were regular paints for exactly that reason, but I just thought I'd double check as I've not yet seen Contrast first hand.

I feel I’ve gained some exp with NMM and since my shiny ultramarine, I’ve decided to practice other colors and the marine is such a great template to work on with such obvious shapes. The first one is bright green. Since I’m a little more confident with the technique, I’ve added the extra step of scratch’s and chipping/battle damage....there’s still a bit to fix/smooth/complete in various areas of the legs before I move to the torso/belt. Hope you like the progress....
Cheers you guys
