Ok, for anybody who has see my recent projects in the P and M section, you already know that I am gearing up to make a new IG army from scratch. The codex was just filled with too much goodness and tasty options... how can anybody refuse?
I bought a 20 man Cadian box from the LGS while waiting for all my online purchases to arrive. So far I only have one sergeant completely painted to finish. I am doing these kinda sloppy, but I have a lot of infantry to make table-ready.
Here he is. I still need to finish the stormtrooper proxies I converted, as well as the other 19 guys that came in the same box as the sergeant, before my Battleforce box gets here this week.

As you wish.
I got a little carried away with the sentinel sprue.... in fact, I got carried away with all the models I assembled last night. They just come with so much cool stuff! I decided my IG was going to be more fluffy than competitive right now, and I made models that were just plain fun to make!
Company Command Squad: Commander with powerfist, Standard Bearer, Medic, Voxcaster, and a Sniper for good measure. (I plan on sticking a mortar in there anyway, so some of the models were just made because I liked how they look. Like the sniper.)
Armored Sentinel: Outfitted to kill light tanks and transports. Autocannon, HK missile, chainsaw attachment and an extra spotlight for good measure.
Heavy Weapon Teams: Mortars. I looooooove mortars. (Former 11-C in the US Army, aka mortarman). I have some good ideas on modeling them more realistically. (One guy standing on the baseplate, setting the plate. When firing the first shot with a mortar, somebody has to stand on the baseplate to ensure that the recoil is directed down through the baseplate into the soil so the baseplate doesn't bounce back up and mess up the traverse and elevation. It only takes a shot or two before the baseplate wedges itself into the ground, due to its flanges, and then the mortar is set and won't bouce around.)
I could also put some empty wax tubes around the mortar, from opened mortar round canisters. It really is neat having inside knowledge of how the weapon works (which is why the lousy bipod bothers me). This must be what it is like for former tankers when they buy a Leman Russ.
That's all I got so far, check back later for updates!

I like what you've done so far. The respirators really add character to the models, especially in the commander and sniper.
For the painting aspect, it looks like it's really only the face that brings the model down. I find a quick wash or two of Ogryn Flesh helps with open areas of flesh.
Looking forward to more.
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Yeah, I figure the respirators will blend well with the pig iron heads I am still waiting on. The face on the sergeant really puzzles me. It is just not photogenic. It looks fine in person, I have hit it with 2 washes of ogryn flesh already, it just doesn't pick it up on camera (it might be the white balance setting).

Ooh nice. I have an idea for an army where every model has a forge world respirator head and carapace armor. By the way is carapace armor still available to all troops in the new codex?
11516
Post by: deadly chicken
no.
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
To elaborate (correct me if I am wrong, doing it off the top of my head), only veterans and command squads (both company and platoon) have the option to equip to carapace armor. The veterans can buy it as a doctrine, and the command squads can purchase it as a wargear upgrade. Normal Infantry platoons cannot benefit from carapace.

You are very astute, for the stubber IS glued to the copula. I was having issues with the pintile mount, and got frustrated, and thus mounted the stubber directly. You are in luck, I did stay up until 2 AM painting my storm troopers last night, so I will get some pics up of those as soon as I get some coffee (still 8:30 am here).

As promised: Pictures of my now-complete (except for the base) Lord Commissar. He strikes a heroic pose, does he not? I went with more traditional means of painting him, since the Commissariat does not adopt the colors of a regiment they are assigned to. Today I picked put Dan Abnett's "The Founding" Omnibus following Gaunt's Ghosts. It's pretty good so far, and makes me appreciate my new Commissar a lot more! So much more, I opted to put him semi-permanently into my narritive-game list. Ah, well, enough procrastinating. Here are the pics:

Yeah, you'll have to forgive my photo-fu, as the commissar's hat does not blend into his collar in person. There was a very heavy shading of Baal Red where the collar comes up, you just can't see it at that angle. I plan to come back and highlight things in the future as well, but right now I am going to shelf the Commissar and get to work on some vets. They need some paint like something fierce!

For those of you who don't read my blog... I have a new deadline: I need to get 30 infantry models complete in the next 24 hours, for a local event that was just announced yesterday. I finished my Chimera earlier today, and am now working on the 30+ infantry I have left to finish my 1500 point army I plan to enter into a painting contest. I also need to base all the infantry I have previously finished, as well as the sentinel I completed the night before last. I don't have a lot of time, but I'll try to take some pictures when I am taking breaks from the work...
Here is the sentinel I slapped some paint on yesterday:

I stayed up all last night and spent the whole day today painting the last units I needed to have my 1500 point list... a whopping 33 infantry models! I'll hopefully have some pictures for you tomorrow.

Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Well, as some of you may have read on my blog, I did ok at the tournament. I didn't win many games, but I won the "Most Epic Moment" award for threatening a Leman Russ squadron with a lone survivor of a demo-equipped Vet squad. It was pretty hilarious that my opponent had to waste a turn of throwing down large templates on a single dude. He still won the match, but it was a great casual game and I look forward to attending this group regularly.
Now that I have played my IG some, I am getting a better idea of my preferred style of play. So in short... I need more mortars! I am broke and jobless though, so I am stuck converting things I already have... like rhinos... (Yes I stole the idea from infilTRAITOR's blog)
So far this is all I got. This was my first rhino I had assembled, so I had to cut free the top hatch, as well as strip down the paint and put this basecoat on to prep it for the new paint scheme. The mortar itself is made from a click-eraser, if you know what I'm talking about, and pieces of cut sprue as brackets. I have more to do, like covering that gap in the turret and adding a little embellishment to the mortar, but this is a good start I think. If I don't glue down this hatch, I can still use it as a rhino if I need to for my SM army, but I haven't played them in a while so they may end up for sale instead.
(Excuse the white balance issue, I had 2 different light sources that make it impossible to adjust it properly.)

12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
@physcosamatic: I think they are on scale... I never really checked. They have a lot more gear than cadians, so they look bulkier, but I think it is intended that way.
@ infilTRAITOR: I suppose that I could use it as a medusa... I have been searching for more suitable materials for a barrel extension, but around the house I'm coming up empty. I suppose I could buy a dowel or something on the cheap, if I have to. I did find some PVC pipe (well, PEX pipe actually) that I was able to use for the barrel on both vehicles. It is slightly larger in circumference than the click-eraser I was going to use, and a great deal cheaper. I can also cut it to greater lengths, for other variants.
I did some cutting and gluing of the hatch with some plasticard to fill that gap, and here's what I got:

I got a little bit more work done on the converted Griffon, and redesigned it.
This is probably closer to what infilTRAITOR had intended, except his will obviously be cooler with his mortars having actual bipods, and barrels made from battlecannons:

I'm liking the redesign. The way you were going to have it I tried myself and, although it worked, I coudln't bring myself to like it. Your execution of the original one came out better than mine. I think the mortar needs something on it. It looks a bit plain at the moment, maybe some ultra-thin plasticard wrapped around it or some gubbins perhaps? What might work instead of the plasticard is the plastic ribbons people use to put around gifts as it's much more pliable.
Question I will have to ask you is this: What's your ideas on how to incorporate the crew into the Rhino? I've found that to be the most frustrating part so far, so maybe we could swap notes.
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
That's a good one. I made an armored sentinel, and wisely left out the crewman from it. I have been toying with the idea of having that model sitting on the bench, and making another model standing over the mortar itself, but I wanted to have a finished version of the mortar before trying to work out the crew details. I want to make a bell housing for the mortar, but I can't find anything that looks right. I'm going to go look at 120mm mortar pictures on google, because I never worked with one before. I only worked with the smaller 81mm and 60mm mortars, so I am not even sure the bigger 120's had the same bell-shaped device at the end. Another plan for the mortar is to create the cooling fin around the base. I say "fin", singular, because it is actually one long spiralling fin that wraps around something like 80 times around the base of the tube, and helps to use convection through metal to disperse heat. I'm not quite sure how I'm gonna pull that one off, but you gave me a pretty good idea about the ribbon. Or maybe even that electrician's solder, which comes pre-wound in a tube? I'll have to check it out. I am already in short supply of the bipods, but I may have to purchase some from a bits specially for this project, as my sprue bipod looks really lame. The last challenge will be the actual mount. The ideal mount would be a ball-joint, much like the ankle of a sentinel. I can't quite bring myself to mangle a sentinel piece like that, though, so I'll have to find another way.
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
You made me give it some thought, so I threw together the first crewman just now. He is the assistant gunner, relaying firing orders to the gunner from the fire-control computer. I don't have any idea how I am going to make a loader fit in that cramped space, or how I am going to even get a loader to hold such a sizable round. I may just have to take some creative license and make the gunner standing over the tube be the loader.

Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Ported the mortar tube, created a much better-looking mount with a screw and the handle-looking thing from a vehicle spotlight. Mounted it in the rhino with the crewman... this probably is going to have to do until after the competition next week.

Good eyes! Yes, those are the antennae cut off at the base and inverted. I drilled out the forward receiver a little bit to make them stay attached better.
Some good news! Last night a friend came over with his bitz box, and I traded some SM bikes that I was never going to use for a mountain of bitz! I have enough bitz to build a full chimera, tripods, bipods, gunshields, and finally: enough bitz to make 15 catachan jungle fighters. I don't quite know what I will make with them, but I'll think of something.

You're gonna be mad at me, infilTRAITOR, but I had to cut the Griffon from my 1000 point list to make room for the 3rd chimera. :(
I've pretty much come to a halt on that project. Now I am just trying to get painted what I have assembled... and only 5 days (oh wait, 1 in the morning means 4 days) left until the day of my competition. I have a job interview on tues, so really I only have 3 days I can paint. I ordered a new Demolisher kit today... it should be fun. I don't know yet which variant I want to run in the next tournament... but it would probably be the regular demolisher with either multi-melta or plasmacannon sponsons... I'm thinking of running it with a pask for extra oomph against armor... I would love 3's to glance and 4+'s to pen on av14 with the main cannon!
I'm only gonna have one of them (stupid lack of money) so may as well kit it out, right?

Hey Fox,
Got some new Demolishers myself recently, and the lovely thing about them is that you can simply interchange all the weapons. I was going to magnetize them for that purpose, but GW, IMO, actually did something right and the sponsoons, main gun, and forward support weapon are all interchangeable now. It's literally just plug and play! So, if the demolisher w/ MEQ/tank killing sponsoons doesn't suit you, you can easily change it out from game to game I've found.

PS: What unit were you with in the Army? I'm guessing the Stryker Brigade up in Alaska based on your current location?

@Grey Knight Luke: nope, no photoshop, just Windows Vista's preview program (it has simple adjustment features for contrast/brightness, hue/saturation, and a simple cropping tool). If you like photoshop though, download The Gimp, an open source (read: free!) program designed to perform similar functions. In fact, having used photoshop in the past, I have to say that the Gimp is a pretty darn good clone.
@chrisocasio: Nope, I never have been stationed in Alaska. It is merely where I reside. I was supposed to be stationed at Ft. Polk, LA. Unfortunately, I was injured days before our graduation ceremony in Ft. Benning... and doctors deemed me unfit to stay in the service, so while I was being medboarded out I was transferred to the 2/54th BN of the 192nd Infantry BDE and helped do some M.O.U.T. training for the Latin America Special Operations units that would come to Ft. Benning to train... I did that for about 4 months. Most days it would consist of me and some of the other platoon mates of mine hiding in empty rooms with our rifles, with blanks, and playing some OPFOR. Others it would consist of me teaching them proper stacking, or room clearing, but not much since I only know a very little amount of Spanish. I had been trained as an 11-C, but Most of what I learned in our mortar training on the square is already starting to escape me, but certain things still stand out. I still remember some of the memory aids to level the sight's bubbles... "Side bubble, side bubble, TNC (traverse and check)!!!" I had an expert mortar badge, but I doubt I would be able to re-earn one if I had to do the test exercises over again now. Its been over a year now.
Well I should probably stop reminiscing, and get back on topic!
Slann: Thanks for the compliments!

So today I got my new Demolisher kit in the mail. The Mrs. may not be happy when she gets home and sees it... but for now I am enjoying the new backbone to my IG army.
Some key points I wanted to hit on that may not be widespread information to those looking to buy one of these kits:
Let's start with the bad news: There are no accessory sprues for this kit anymore. No track guards, dozer blades, pintile stubbers, or even Imperial Aquilas to paste on. Save your accessory sprues from those chimeras and old LRBT kits if you want to use them on these, because otherwise you will have to purchase the sprue for 12 bucks from GW direct. I'm going to have to myself, to keep the dozerblade theme I have on all my vehicles going. As an alternative, however, I suggest browsing through bits on Ebay. You might be able to snag a dozerblade or set of track guards for much cheaper, if that's all you are looking for.
Now lets dive into the new and improved: For starters, the tracks are MUCH easier to build, thanks to the new design that has special slots for the tracks to slip in instead of those annoying wheels that never see the light of day. The track pieces are numbered as well, making it nearly fool-proof. I have no gaps in my treads, a first for me! To sweeten the deal further, the directions are actually COMPREHENSIBLE and much more step-by-step then the previous instruction booklets (which more resembled CAD drawings that you were supposed to figure out on your own). These new directions make things run a lot smoother.
Now the really good part: CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS!!! Yup, you read it right. Just take a look at that picture up there. Now, you don't have to glue on the side sponson hull pieces, but I did anyway because I figure 90% of the time I'll have them. Anyway, the three main weapons, two hull weapons, and 4 choices of sponson weapons are all created to be interchangeable with their optional counterparts. Meaning, if you don't glue them in, you can swap out the weapons to make different variants without having to be an expert modeler. This is huge for me, because I can't magnetize anything to save my life (lack of magnets and expertise). That sticky poster-tack you might recall me mentioning in my very early posts works very well for this, as the slots are not super-tight and the weapons tend to drop out of them if they don't have a little extra help. So with this kit, its like getting all three variants in one. Of course, you can only field one at a time, but the ability to pick which variant fits into your next list is just awesome.
So, with this kit, you can make:
A Leman Russ Demolisher
A Leman Russ Executioner
or A Leman Russ Punisher
with choices for:
Hull Heavy Bolter or
Hull Lascannon
as well as:
Multi-melta sponsons
Plasma Cannon sponsons
Heavy Bolter sponsons or
Heavy Flamer sponsons
So, in all, I guess my 45 bucks was well spent. I expect to see the 2nd wave of IG updates might include a similarly-upgraded kit for the regular Leman Russ Battle Tank, with options for a Vanquisher, Exterminator, and Eradicator. If you like the accessories to come with the tank, and only want vanilla LRBTs, I suggest you stockpile them now, before they go out of production. Otherwise, be on the lookout for that new kit that I imagine will be released soon.
I took this from my blog. Enjoy!

Well folks... my updates may be somewhat sporadic for a bit... real life is kicking in my door! My wife's contractions are starting to get really close together, about every 10 minutes or so, so she's probably going to pop here in the next day or so. Thanks for following along thus far! Hopefully I'll find time to paint up some more stuff in the recent future. We'll see....

Thanks for all the replies guys... but I'm a little ashamed to say that it was a false alarm . Apparently her contractions are having no effect, so the doc sent us back home.... but I suppose Mrs. Foxphoenix could still pop at any moment.
My son and my dog went to stay with grandma for the day though... so its nice to sit in a quiet apartment for a change. Maybe I can find some time to do a little hobby work while the missus sleeps.

This is all I have gotten done so far... making things ready for babies and trying to actually PLAY 40k has cut into my painting time lately...
Here's Guardsman Marbo, base tricked out with the resin pieces from the basing kit I won as well as some of the crushed slate from the same kit. If any of you remember my BA successor chapter, you will notice that the paint scheme of the helmet matches the said chapter . I figured Marbo would benefit from a kill trophy.
Simple kitbashing, simple paintjob, simple Marbo.

Also for the record, Marbo totally kicks A$$ in games... Last game he took on a whole space marine tactical squad and killed them single-handedly. He caught them in a sweeping advance, and in the following 2 turns he went on to kill a chaplain in terminator armor. He died in combat with the chaplain, but thanks to the chaplain already being wounded from previous shooting and Marbo getting the charge (Fleet FTW), he took the HQ out with him. 65 points well-spent, killing 335 points (2 KP) in 4 turns.

Post by: slann
looks good I like the way he turned out , yeah he is pretty good he usually dies after he throws his demo charge but sometimes he can linger and be a pain .

Post by: FoxPhoenix135
A good way to piss your opponent off: go to ground in some cover, that is by an objective that he wants to capture, close enough for contesting... USR stealth + going to ground = frustration for enemy squad shooting at Sylvester Stallo.... I mean marbo.

I've been putting together an inquisitor out of bits to give my IG army some psyker protection. I've got the inquisitor, a familiar, and a priest/hierophant/mystic model as well. I figure if I am not using the stormtroopers, they can be used as warriors for a retinue. After having played against Eldrad recently, I realized that psykers suck to play against with guard. With the rumors flying about the Space Puppies having a super psychic power of some sort, and the prevalence of Lash lists, the LD 10 psychic hood is looking better all the time. Here's the built and primed models, to be painted up shortly.

Looking good , the new uber power from the space wolves don't affect guard that much , but its still good to have the hood .
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Doesn't affect mechanized guard maybe, but for any foot platoons unfortunate enough to be in that path it sounds bad... but mainly it was that blasted Eldrad dude who made up my mind.

Post by: slann
Still he will kill 4 point guys Wow , and that means him getting in 24 inches of your gun line . I usually B line rough riders at his unit , but I do have a hood in my list as well I just love inquisitors .

I like this tank, despite its cost. It costs an arm and a leg, but if you add Pask it can kill even AV14 through sheer number of glancing hits:

Ok gots me some lame-o pics of the priest- I didn't feel like busting out the lightbox for a WIP model so this is the best I can do. You can see the converted eviscerator made from 2 chainswords, and the pole is from the command sprue minus the flag. I dunno where I got the head, it somehow ended up in my bitz box after I traded a guy a mess of bits for some unused minis I had. I got a rosarius bit from a black templar bits, and the legs and torso are catachan.
Ok enough of the description, on to the imperial priest!
Again, lame pictures but that is all I can do ATM. I'll showcase him properly when he is finished.

Can we get a snap of the front of the Griffon?
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Sorry, it'll have to wait until after the move! We closed on our first house today, and we have to move out there by friday. I've been spending the last day and a half packing stuff up! I also lengthened the barrel of my stock Leman Russ, so now I can double it as a Vanquisher if need be. That will have to wait for pictures too, until after the move! On the plus side, I should be getting the loft for my hobby space, so I'll be able to have my own space away from kids! Yay!
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
Ok, you got it out of me. I dug out the IG to make a quick barrel-extension onto my LRBT to make it able to double as a vanquisher. So while I was at it I snapped a better shot of the Griffon in its current state (in need of another wash, that is). Here is the pair of them for your viewing pleasure:

The mortar on the griffon looks pretty good, however the hull HB looks a bit dodgy somehow. I would recommend trying to build up some kind of frame around the sides
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
That's probably because its stuck on with poster tack! I wanted to make the conversion not permanent, so I used sticky-tack to adhere the top hatches, mortar, and hull HB to the chassis. It looks lame, I know, but I want to keep that vehicle available if I absolutely have to have another rhino in my SM army
I do plan on buying a couple more chimera hulls and making some real conversions in the future, but for now this has to do.

The guard are making a comeback... for the first time in many months, I did some work to my guard army.
I've been distracted lately, making one-off conversions for the 40k RPG Dark Heresy. I did manage to get my Creed "counts-as" kitbash done in between converting bouts. I also liberated a righteous tool of the Emperor from filthy Xenos Ork hands, and have been making an effort to restore it (it's pretty rough, as you can see in the picture.

Hey wow, that sounds like a great idea. I'll have to try that if I can find any of my old disposable razors (yeah I'm cheap son of a .)
@Papaskittels: I recently acquired the game and it is so far awesome. We have yet to try it out in my gaming group, but most of them are experienced DnD'ers so the transition shouldn't be too bad.

your Dark Heresy are incredible!! fantastic work!
what bit did you use on the shotgun's slide? really like how that looks.
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
The slide for the shotgun is a fore-grip from a bolter. Since the SM scout shotgun has a hand attached, I just cut out the old one and dropped in the bolter's. It is a bit wider than the shotgun, but centering it up doesn't make it look too weird. The back end is just the receiver and stock of a regular lasgun. Is there any interest in a mini-torial?

The shotgun is pretty great. Hope you don't need a lot of them, though; finding all the bitz would be a nightmare.
12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
The bits are not too bad, if you are both an SM player and an IG player. Most IG players will have a ton of lasguns laying around, and most SM players will have the boltguns. The only trick is finding the scout shotguns, as they are only available with the regular scout kit, and most people use scouts as snipers.

Best. Anniversary. Gift. EVER.
On my blog ( http://foxphoenix40k.blogspot.com/ ) I am holding a naming contest for it, if anybody is interested!
A note about the heavy bolter door guns: I don't like them. At all, really. I ended up replacing the silly twisting sticks with a pair of tripod-mounted heavy bolters from the HWT set. Luckily I had extras. I set them back in there far enough that they rotate in far enough for the doors to slide shut.

I've been getting some painting done on the valkyrie... in fact I put in 6 or 7 hours worth of it in just today alone! I got the cockpit and crew completely painted, and put in the canopy. Basecoating the gray took FOREVER, since I do it by hand. I had to thin the paint a bit so it would not get too thick and blotchy, and then I had to paint on several layers to get the coverage I wanted. I wish I had done more detail on the interior, but since it was so hard to get a brush in there I had to settle for a quick and dirty metal drybrush. I got some pictures of my modified sponsons, however. I am using the bodies of the gunner crew for a pair of meltagunner vets (pics of those tomorrow, hopefully), so these remain unmanned. The crewman bodies just looked too awesome, and I thought they'd make fitting stormtroopers if anyone wanted to try the conversion.
I am fairly impressed with this kit... it has almost as much modularity as the Demolisher kit. A few things make it fall short of that though: There are no options for Lascannons to make a vendetta, and there should be a way to swap out MRPs and Hellstrike missiles to really make this a truly modular kit. I put the MRPs on, figuring that it is better to have it and not pay for it than it is to not have it and not be able to take it later, right?
Righto. Anyhoo, onto the WIP pictures!

12914
Post by: FoxPhoenix135
I finally got the bits to convert my Valkyrie to a Vendetta. I am hoping I'll like the new variant, since I couldn't magnetize it the way I built it.
I used Leman Russ side sponsons (the old kind) that I had torn off a tank, and cut the heavy bolter off. I then took a pair of TL Lascannon arms from the dreadnought kits, and cut the lascannons from those and glued them to the sponson housing. The lascannons on the nose are from a razorback, I believe. I imagine that a predator's sponsons would work too.
What kind of tactics do you use for a Vendetta? For my valkyrie, most of my tactics involved moving it as far as possible to get it's save, and firing the MRPs (considered a defensive weapon) at any juicy horde targets that would present themselves, then dropping off a squad of rock-hard veterans to contest/hold objectives. It looks like now I'll be circling my deployment zone, sniping at AV14 or high-wounds, high-T targets. That limits its efficiency as a transport, don't you think?
