Hi all.

I'm starting to gather materials for my first attempt at a 40K scale warlord. I'm going to go with the smaller scale (about one and a half FW reavers in height). Any tips, suggestions etc. to get me going?

Budget is pretty much non existant so any clever ideas of what to use to make a sturdy structure without spending much money would be gratefully appreciated!

Thanks

Have made a start - WARLORD ON A BUDGET!!!!

I know this doesn't look too great so far (or something a 5 year old might make) but hopefully it will look more like a warlord as time progresses.

Spend so far - £6.50 on plasticard and poly cement (for use later)
From the 'larder' - some k'nex I had knocking around from my younger years, a base from a scenary project that's not happened, glue gun, children's foam checkers set, card etc. Postcards are really useful for details and small bits as well as a strengthening tool, and if you keep an eye out in students' union, tourist info etc you can pick up handfus of the things absolutly free

I've started on the legs naturally but more because I find them the hardest part. After playing around with k'nex I managed to get a rough frame to give the right shape and they look mostly in proportion. I've got the epic scale model to hand as well as some photos of others as reference. I'm not aiming for an exact scale copy, partly because I don't think I'm skilled enough or have the pateince and partly because that tiny models so hard to measure acuratly. I'm going more on the principal if it looks right it'll do. I have seen scaled up models before and sometimes they look a bit odd just being bigged up. Mines roughly 9-11 times larger than the epic, I think it will come out around the 30 inch mark in height when he's done.

The pink coggy bits are foam pieces from one of those floor checkers. I haven't found the board but hopefully will in the next day or two to use as the bulk for the shin guards. It's got quite a nice industrial pattern on it which helps, although is a bit over scale.
The k'nex frame adds quite a bit of strength when glued with added card to help prevent the boeing when weights added. At the moment it still has a bit of sideways give, I will solve this when I add more bulk and detail to the pelvis area with some braces desguised as mechanical bits.

So far the plan for attaching the top is to use an upside down hot chocolate jar, with the lid glued to the pelvis and the body built around the jar. Hopefully this should allow the top half to unscrew for transport while giving a strong join and allowing a bit of rotation. I'm also aiming to have loose sections to allow access inside the body and use k'nex peices to make clip-on arms and head again for transport but meaning that the connections are hidden inside.

Weapons fit at the moment - I'm thinking of mega gattling blaster (or whatever it's called) for right arm, volcanoe cannon on the left, twin turbo laser thing on one shoulder and a vulcan mega bolter in the other. Ideas for constructing these (especially the mega bolter so it looks 'natural in a shoulder mount' will be extreemly welcome!

Other ideas and suggestions welcome also!

At first I giggled a little bit at the Knex, then I realized the budget savings with using them..

So far so good, want moar

Quick update. I've started bulking out the legs, more to do but hopfully they're starting to show some sort of resemblance to a warlords

Day 3 update:

I think the bodys too wide by about 2cm looking at it but I don't think it's worth the efforet to change it now. Hopefully it will look a bit better once the chest, shoulders, engines and leg armour has been made. Height proportions seem to be pretty much accurate going from the epic model and also the cover art on titanicus.
The waist join is a bit flimsy but that should be improved with the waist lighting section added.

day 4!

Not much to show today for the time it took. I don't have he epic shin guards so it took a couple of attempts to get them looking reasonably. The first attempt was way too small. lower legs have also had some bulk added and are looking much better now.

This thread seems to have been quiet over the weekend. Anyhow, day 8 update:

Spend over the weekend £2 - garden ties for detailing plus a tester paint pot.
Total spend so far approx £8

Main armour now cut and added, plus edges taped/postcarded up to neaten. Have also begun cutting armour plates ready for the detailing stage. (day 7 photo)

and latest photo from before work this morning:

Feet - I know these are a bit different to the epc model but to be honest they don't look too bad at the moment (I think anyway!) and it's got to be one of the dullest jobs (even with a helper to cut out the bits - greatly apprciated!) The toes still need strengthening, especially the front and heel ones as they are a bit wobbly now the weight building up on the torso section.
Shin guards are held on with a couple of lego bricks to allow them to be removed for painting and travel.
Arms have the basic shape now built ready for more detailing. They clip onto the shoulders with k'nex to allow them to be transported/painted separatly and swapped for alternatives should I wish to in future.
Still debating how to construct shoulder weapons and what to make. Will do a bit of bin diving later to see what I can find. The head will hopefully have some interior detail and will be made from a certain hair gel tub (green) which seems to fit nicely as a neck section and wil allow the head to be unscrewd for painting and travel again.
I have also cut out a door section from a necromunda bulkhead and fished out a ladder from the building sets for the customary door and ladder to now-where to go on the rear.

Tip of the week - If you are as impatient as me get someone else to make the feet section first and draw up templates for the armour plates (or preferably cut everything out to make a kit for you to put together!!!!)

C&C welcome

I'm struggeling to find missile shapped bits to make either an apocalypse missile launcher or a vortex missile for this, any suggestions? WIll have an update later when I get chance to upload a photo.

day 9!

Not much to show. Have given the card a thick coat of cheap hairspray in the hope of sealing the masking tape - didn't really work. Am slowly going over it with PVA now. Have also beun adding armour plates from plasticard and early details such as sticking the rear door on.

and the mess that is my living room floor - don't do this if you have family or wives around, I'm guessing they won't be best pleased. It did get me thinking if a 30" warlord creates this much mess how much would a full size one create, and how long would tidying up take even with the benefits of a 41st millienium vacume cleaner...........

the worst that could happen? Waste a few months of my life plus a load of cash? Sounds like a plan lol. After all that what a pub does anyway
do do do do do do do do... that's scary! What part of the UK are you from? Not brum land too is it? That really would be weird!

Anyways,

Todays update - armour plates added as far as I will at this stage. After a clean tonight I should hopefully be starting on some detailing, either legs or engine most likely, but we'll find out for sure tomorrow!

I'm not from Brum land...

I'm from down South, that's right, I'm a London boy!

I agree on the pub thing, I'm not old enough to drink, but my uncle's a bit of an alky...

What weapons is it weilding? I think it's got a Vulcan Mega-bolter (or possibly a Gatling laser) and some sort of Uber-Mega-Death-lascannon.

Care to clear that up for me?

Edit: Wow, i just noticed how much of my personal life away when I post..... not good....

Warlord @ 2009/10/01 16:57:26

Post by: covenant84

Guns are a gatling blaster and supossed to be a volcanoe cannon but it did come out looking more like a mega death laser thing. next time i'm reading the rules will see if there's a better laser weapon it could represent. Hunting for missiles or something for shoulders still.

anyhow's, todays update. Leg detailing started. It's not great but with a bit of paint should do the job with a bit more work. Most people wil look at the top half and front anyways.

another £1 spent on more glue gun sticks.

Total spend £9.50!!!! Still looks like this beast could be a bargain!

Looks great on the whole so far!

I'd advise against bendy straws though, I just hate to see such a massive piece have a mar on it like that. They just don't hold up over time and the slightest touch will flake the paint off!

I absolutly love it. You've used part from all over the place, rather than just the standard card/platicard and that means you've got all those little details in there that other people dont have. It looks brilliant!! And, no doubt, once painted, it'll look better than most of the scratch-built stuff out there.
Hrmm... i seem to have alot of Lego and Knex hanging around myself...

Day 14 update.

Have started detailing the front with pipes and bits as well as making a start on the basic shoulder shapes.

Have also added the top engine sections on:

Have also made a start on the head. It's a different design from the epic model (and was quite a pain to make too). I'm trying to squeeze in interior detail. It will attach to the torso with magnets now and the top will be loose/magnetised or something.

I think the shoulders will now have a missile launcher and an ardex pattern vulcan mega-bolter as pictured in the apoc rules (the three barrelled version) rather than the more regular type GW tend to fit to their models.

at last a bit more progress!

No more money spent but I have swapped a few bits in the swap shop for some missiles. Still looking for more if anyone reads this in the near future!

day 17. A bit more detailing (not visible) plus the left shoulder and mega bolter are basically done. Just detail and maybe a bit of bulk to the sides.

Have been playing around with details for the top of the shoulder too, looking for opinion here..... should I just put 'flat' detail as in texture and maybe a few pipes to preserve the current shoulder shape, or add a front observation 'balcony' with a raised rear section consisting of a hatch and crane type arrangement. At the moment I think the front of the right shoulder may be a bit higher anyway with the rocket launcher so the extra wall on top may help to balance out the height difference, however waiting for bit's to arrive. Main bit's tacked in place:

Thoughts please!

So far, your warlord looks great. Love the balcony idea on top of the Apocalypse ROCKET* launcher. As for the Princeps Chamber inside the Warlord's head, I like it, and by giving the princeps a more "german WWII u-boat captain who yells out orders" is in my opinion a fine break from all those "strapped to a chair and utterly immobile princeps".

It might be the image itself, but the Gatling Blaster looks a bit small in comparison with the Volcano Cannon and the rest of the Warlord. Perhaps sizing it a tad up would do the trick? All in all, you have done a great work so far, and I'll keep an eye out on this blog.

My honest opinion, FI

*Note: I wrote ROCKET launcher since I dislike the word missile launcher. even the word missile is an invitation to roll a miss on a D6 when you're trying to break open a loyalist Land Raider with missile launchers. Hence the word rocket

Warlord @ 2009/10/12 16:09:59

Post by: covenant84

Thank's FI. There may be something in that rocket thing... I've stopped using hunter killer missiles becuase they ALWAYS do miss for me. hmmmmmm *thinks hard

The gatling blaster is a little on the small side. It doesn't look too bad though (and to be fair so is the laser blaster thing when compared to it's epic counterpart.) I'm going to try to bulk it out with some ammo hoppers or armour plating or something. I've left it for the moment until I get the other sections built to see how it looks in comparison to the whole finished model rather than what I had done at the time I built it.

Thanks for the C&C, hope you like it as it progreses further

@ Jamunition - patience my friend, patience..... lol

day whatever update (17?)

Deciced to go with the balcony idea. Have built the basic shoulder structure. Requires a bit more detailing and the damaged wall will be blended in a bit better when I start adding battle damage as a whole.

And another picture just because I sat on my sofa and liked the angle of it on the table. Doesn't look quite as intimidating in the photo though, maybe a bit of mood lighting will help when he's finished. Any suggestions for names also welcome!

Warlord @ 2009/10/15 07:25:18

Post by: FerrumIgnatus

Battle Damage? On a Warlord? HERESY! -and this outing comes from a Iron Warriors player...go figure- Deus ex Machina, the God Machine is immune against enemy fire! it has 6 void shields, for abaddons abandoned trousers sake!

Kidding aside, battle damage is just fine. Just prooves that the Warlord ain't a sassie when it comes down to business.

Little idea for the balcony: How about a Sniper team? I hate GW for not having added any close-in defences on the warlord. -seriously, anything inside 24" can't be targeted by the Warlord, how stupid is that?-

Warlord @ 2009/10/15 10:22:53

Post by: covenant84

@ FerrumIgnatus - Totally agree! I'm very tempted to add a twin linked autocannon to the centre top section as an AA gun - with the 24" rule plus the hieght it'd be out of range to fire at groud troops anyway so no problem there. And if it's used in apoc. I can't see anyone objecting to an extra autocannon when they've got a titan to contend with! Would snipers be in range? They'd be about 28" high before you take into account how far away from the base the enemy may be.....

I'm tempted to add a multilaser to the head and maybe a storm bolter too just because I have them lying around

Warlord @ 2009/10/16 07:05:09

Post by: FerrumIgnatus

Meh, if someone begins to complain over the gun-toting hedgehog, just ignore them. How about buying a couple of wooden beads, cut them in half and stick a multilaser/autocannon to it and put them on the sides of the shoulders? -i.e-right under the Apocalypse rocket launcher-

for the aa-gun, go and see if you can get cheap Aegis defence line boxed sets off ebay. They have a twin-linked -if not quad-linked- autocannon turret that would fit nicely. As for other spots to place close-in defences, the pelvis would be a great spot for some storm bolters pointing downwards, but I believe adding a gun to the head would be a tad chaosy...

Day 18

£7 spent on a battlefield accessories pack.
Total spend £16.50

First off right shoulder. Rocket launcher added - I've modelled it mostly closed due to difficulty getting hold of suitable sized missile bits. I think it gives enough of an impression to tell what it is though. The shutters will of course be painted with scorch marks. The hold is open with some stored munitions in there too - will show a photo when it's painted (fingers crossed a job for next week!!!!). The black bit on top will have some sort of scanner array if I ever find my marine spares.

Rear deatiling so far - it's not super clear but left side as traditional 'ladder to nowhere', center section has mechanicus plate from cities of death, right side has small hatches and a hoist so far. Legs have also had a few extra details added plus the right leg has an access ladder to a hatch at the top of the leg.

And a full frontal so far.....

And blasting trough its warhorns "HOOO" whilst trying to grab its Crown Jewels with the Gatling blaster...

I like the second rocket launcher, allthough I have to ask WHY two hellstrike rockets are mounted on the top of the carapace, are those waiting to be lowered into the launchers or are they "Additional" 'urty dakka like you can do on customized Ork Stompa's? The overall look is starting to look darn awesome, and those CoD tiles and assecories are a nice addition.

Kepp up the excellent work, mate!

day 20 - sorry no photo. Detailing is done as far as I could be bothered, this thing is starting to wear thin on my patience now (hope the good folks on mars aren't reading this blasphemy!). Anyway just to let you know that a can of black spray later he's now unercoated awaiting base colours when I get a spare couple of hours. I've also had to add a slightly bigger base as it was on the brink of toppling forward on anything but a flat surface. Thanks to a mysical helper for the help adding rivit holes to the corners of armour plates.

I'm seriously loving this project. Its very entertaining, ive spent the last 15min just looking at the legs trying to figure out the bits and pieces used, great work on the legs by the way.

Just wondering if the warlord is on a slight lean... looking at the full frontals it seems to be leaning to the right and back a little. is this intended?

... i just tried to picture the warlord doing the whole matrix dodge bullet thing lol it didnt work out well

Wow! That is really some amazing work there. I just clicked on this thread for the first time now, my late visitation is probably credited to the uninteresting title of the thread

But I am very glad I decided to check this out. This is easily one of the best scratchbuilt Warlords I have seen, especially for the tiny budget that has gone into it. From the other warlords I've seen, most people either pull off the scratchbuild very well, or fail trying. You definately fit into the former category because that is a stunning titan you created.

I was sceptical when I first saw the knex legs, but as I went through all the posts in the thread, I really liked what I saw and now I see how great they worked as an armature.

Like on most large, flat-surfaced models, the detailing is a difficult part to pull off well, but I think you have done a great job on it.

Can't wait to see it painted!

Right, work is about to restart! plans for the hols were put on hold when my heating broke grrrrr. Anyways. Over the hols the pelvis starting rotating under the weight of the torso - a few sticks of glue and some bits and peices of re-inforcement I'm hoping the problems solve. It's due to the knex inside having not strength rotationally the way i put them together. It seems to take a lot of weight from above though. Another weakness seems to be where the legs join the feet, they bend forward slightly as most of the uper weight is forwards of them. Hopefully this won't be a major problem as it's not fixable without stripping the bottoms of the legs. Be warned if you make your own - make these two areas stronger! Any how, I'm hoping to get a good amount of the basic colours on tonight so may have somehtikng new to show by Monday - watch this space.

Would also like suggestions for a name for this chappy.

Wow! That looks fantastic! In the first pictures when you were using cardboard and sponge I was not able to realize just what it was you were planning to do so I was a bit leary - but this has turned out exceptionally! Glory to the Omnissiah!

Ahaha. Yeah I was going 'what?' as well. Stellar looking. I hope you do such a mighty canvas justice.

/didn't get quite as much done as I'd hoped, painting such a alrge area took more time than I'd hoped and still needs another coat. Anyway, first basic colours are done, you can't really see in the photo but the black areas have a slight metalic blue and red tinge and a bit of rusty red on them. The grey has been sponged on to give a mottled effect but does need another coat - it looks more like it's missed bits than being a subtle mottle at the moment. The thing by the right foot is a guardsmen for scale. I've measured and he's 24" tall. More to come soon.

Very nice; if you wouldn't tell nobody would know tyou managed to make it so cheaply. My only gripe are the weapons arms that look a tad small, but other then that it's an amazing project!

This is a very impressive Warlord titan covenant! I like your combination of cheap materials with an eye for details; the addition of all of that small stuff really separates this one from many attempts I've seen in the past. I'd love to see that thing on the table!!

QFT

It's so easy to get lost on insane details during your scratch build. The way you've quickly accomplished a very effective model is just astounding. I'll spend a couple more years planing my Warlord, and you're ready to go!

very impressive! Nice to see your titan finally got a lick of paint! Really gets me motivated to continue on mine, wich at the moment still needs additional armour plating (or cardboard plating, as some would call it) I really like the mottled effect on it.. Who needs expensive, wallet-obliterating models from Forge World when you can build them yourself, eh?

Thanks for the comments everyone, they're good encouragement to stick with it. I've got a 2nd coat of grey on him over the weekend, still trying to achieve a mottled effect but more subdued than on the above photo - in person it looks like a bad paintjob! Also I want to add some weathering which wouldn't look right without the grey being a bit more prominant. There's still a few areas needing more grey at the moment such as part of the back and the feet, then it's onto re-coating some deatils in black then I'll be cracking on with some metalics. Hoping to have got some metals coloured by the end of this week. Will update when there's a bit more to show.

FerrumIgnatus - do you have a blog of your's?

That's not good. Its is absolutely awesome. This is the best looking scratch built titan i seen so far. only one problem though, everything looks cool including the main guns but they are just to small. But then again i could not scratch-built something for No offense meant.

Keep up the good work

The weapons being small seems to becoming a theme here. Personally I don't think they're too bad. They're not quiite in proportion with the epic model but any bigger and i think they'd be way overscaled compared to other 40K weapons (even though many of those aren't to scale with each other!). The gattling cannon does look small in the last picture especially, I'm wondering if it's partly down to the camera angle. Will try include some shots from other angles when a bit more paints on to see what you think then. not sure if it's fixable though. Maybe a carful paint job will make them stand out a bit more too.

I feel like I'm parroting everyone else, but this really does look amazing!

But not sure I agree with everyone else, the guns are probably about the same size as the FW guns for the Reaver, it's just the chassis is much bigger.

I live in Brum too, where abouts are you planning the debut showing of the model?

Keep in mind, I haven't done much, since I've been working on and off on this project and getting a bit distracted by other things.. (like a small -probably 500 pts.- Rogue Trader themed Imp. Guard/Mercenary Space Marine army..)

Currently just outside Northfield, so I usually frequent the City Centre GW when I find the time. Hopefully I shall be around to see the Warlord appearing, if you let me know I can make the trip up for sure

Hey all. Just a small update. Have started to add a few extra colours. Have base on for some of the gold/brass bits, plus the base colours for the guns. Needs lenses, golden areas, other metalics and a few details picking out, transfers adding and then weathering plus the base. Getting there slowly. Dreading the interior though, I always find it a part that I'm least motivated to paint as it's not easily seen.

Have also got a picture from the side to show the gatling gun. It's a little underscale as said compared to the epic model, but is in scale with other 40K models.

Enjoy!

hey hey! He said someone he was building with might be on here! You'll definatly get to see it sometime then! Think tom's trying to come over some thursday evenings to mine for some 1000pts games, you're welcome come along to if you want. Trying to get some practise in, haven't played much at all for quite a while. Do you have a link to the gargant if you've got a blog or anything on it? It's sounding good so far

Finally got around to putting up some pics, considering we started ours before your Titan, we've not done so much, but it is getting there

We'll definitely have to have a massive Titan battle sometime.

Yes we will! Would love to get a big apoclypse game on the go at somepoint, maybe in summer? I've got about 4K worth of painted marines somewhere, plus on my way to 2000 pts of guard (see thread in my sig if you haven't already - shameless plug!). Would look awesome! Might also be able to get some coloured lights to take some 'night-time' photos

It's cost about £24 now (bought extra paints and a couple of odd bits!)

So far the waist seems to be holding up with the reinforcements i put in, hopefully that problems fixed. Hopeing to get a little more done on detail tonight. With some DIY at home i've been held up but am still bashing away for a few minutes a day during my morning coffee

Excellent Job!!! Did you measure out everything before you started or did you measure as you built it? I have been working on some templates for mine and have found it to be slow.

Astonishing just astonishing and all for £24? wow I'm lost for words...

Anyway now I have collected my thoughts have you got any tips for someone who really wants to have a titan in his army. Did you do other scratch builds first out of interest and has anyone tried doing something on this scale using a hot wire cutter and some pink foam stuff because that's what I have been thinking of trying.

Anyway amazing build I would rank it in my top 3 warlords especially considering the price.

sorry it's taken ages to reply, haven't been on for a while - have spent way too long linking little metal rings together.....

@ mlomax - most of the card for the body was roughly measured as best as i could on the epic model and converted to 40K scale then cut out, and glued together. As you can probably tell not all the measurements or bits translated as well as I'd have hoped but I got the shape roughly right.

@rowan341 - I'd reconmend a hot wire cutter and probably half in foam - that would make it pretty sturdy! I've seen some others made from foam which looked pretty poor, mainly because proportions were out and a general lack of detail (I know mine's not great but I've seen some left as foam and painted!!!). I've done the odd bit of scratch building but nothing like this. It was very much a jump in at the deepend and learn (hence the waist issue). Just be patient and get the basic look sorted before spending lots of time detailing adding guns etc. if you have to start again because you get the basic shape wrong you'll be annoyed if you've spent ages on the legs and have to scrap those too. I'd also give careful thought to the size you want. I'm expecting a fair bit of critism along the lines of 'it's too small' but i do want it to fit on a gaming board in keeping with FW's rather than it taking up most of the gaming space. I did find working from the epic model far more useful than from pictures, and used other poeples attempts to give a bit of help with the tricky bits.

Good look!
