Actually my current job is the first one I've had in a very long time where I didn't have a lab at my disposal, so I know where you're coming from. Still, there's nothing about airbrushing that you can't find at your local grocer or chemist... at least a decent sized one. Distilled water and windex will get you through just fine.

I'm a Physics teacher, but I have never liked Chemistry, despite getting an A*. Always liked Biology, and I had to learn enough Biochemistry to understand a few things about evolution. I've actually had to teach both Chemistry and Biology to a higher standard than I have ever studied them though!

Well, the only part of the science nerd part that caught my attention was the whiskey distiller, and then kinda zoned out.
But then again, I am in IT, and play with little plastic men, so who am I to judge?

Lose the internet for a couple of weeks and you find a short novel tagged on the end of gitsplitta's blog I'm exhausted, and can't recall exactly the wonders I have seen, but they were wonders, of that I am certain.
Oh yeah, there were some tanks! Pretty green tanks. And some swords! Big/small/medium shiny swords. And a letter. Important imperial letter.
And some reviews. Kinda weird cathcing up on stuff and coming across a catch-up review message
All-in-all, good stuff Now I need to lie down and assimilate...

Post by: Gitsplitta
Yeah monkeytroll, it's really been active, but then during the whole tank painting process I was posting progress nearly every night, so the comments piled up. Here's another little pic to help with the whole picture. These are my three objective markers for the Mantis Warriors. You might have seen these earlier at some point but I thought I'd put them together in one shot to document the group. Left: The infamous "chaos idol". Been fighting over this little dragon statue for as long as I've been playing 40k... 20 years or so, hundreds of games if not over a thousand. Center: Beautiful dead termie made for me by Solar_lion, the guy who got me started in 40k all those years ago. Right: Wonderful little wounded marine diorama made by inmygravenimage, though I ended up re-doing the flocking so it matched the rest of my army. (hope you don't mind graven) Have an 1850 pt battle set up vs. Thing 1's Necrons. Don't know if we'll get to play this weekend but we'll try. My force is very Adepticonesque... 3 dreads, sternguard and ISS-alpha all with Pods. The 2 razor's with the same squads as in the tournament army, MoTF. Pedro and a Land Speeder bring the list to exactly 1850.

Post by: fatty
thats wonderfull the fact that you play with the same objective for 20 years that awesome! for as long as i play dark elfs i have used the same dwarf for my focus familiar and the little bugger is just became a part of my force i never go play a game without him (40k or fantasy). i am now working on my Ork objective the grot-pod
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
@CK: I think it came from one of the old fantasy dragon series... Ral Partha, Citadel or one other (started with a "G" I think). Each dragon came with a little extra bit. I think the dragon idol was the extra bit for the green dragon. It's supposed to be crystal... while I re-painted the pile of skulls I've never tried to repaint the dragon part... so I guess it's probably a 25 year-old paint job... years before I started playing 40k. Perhaps one day I'll attempt that as well if I can figure out a good way to do it. Or perhaps I'll send it off to Iffy and let her work her magic on it. Something this old and storied needs a little TLC. @fatty: Yep, it's nice to have odd bits from your past with you... not everything thats great about gaming needs to be "the latest thing". There are times when old and familiar are very, very good. Good progress tonight... picked up 6 scarab bases and a destroyer Lord for Thing 1 as his last report card was a good one. They're all used (there's a consignment room at our FLGS). Not as cheap as I'd like for used stuff but they were in good shape and a minimum of re-painting is necessary to get them in playing shape (they were painted well enough to start with, just not quite matching his army). So just for fun I repainted the scarabs tonight. No idea if the have any use, but I do like the little swarming bases... they're just fun. Finished Whalemusic360's ork on the base of his triumphant commander. I also made very good progress on Pedro. Just some gems and his camo pattern to do... then re-basing (have to come up with something clever, he's the chapter master after all. Might be done by tomorrow depending. While he does not advance my Adepticon army... he's a good addition to my normal force. Suppose I should come up with some decent "counts-as" name for him. Way past bed time... shouldn't have had that last cup of coffee... Gits

Who's scruffy-lookin'?!?!
Maybe we should all give ourselves a self-imposed rule that we are allowed to go OT in Git's Blog, but we have to say something ON topic in the same post too?
I don't remember ever seeing that dragon-idol statue before. Odd, as I've read this whole blog, but I guess there is so much you have to forget something. I think it is good to have something old in an army. I started with GW 22 years ago, though there was a gap of 14-15 years in the middle! I think that to enjoy a hobby for so long as you have, it is essential to evolve, but also to hold on to what made you enjoy the hobby in the first place. Something like a 20+ year old model can really achieve that emotional attachment, I think.

Also, Is it preying mantis, or praying mantis? I always though preying, but I've never considered the other possibility before.

fatty wrote:how about Mantide Religiosa for the name of your chapter master? it means praying mantis but i figure you already kknew that
I think that is loosely translated as "Religion of the Mantidae", so it would be more appropriate for a chaplain I'd think. Being a biologist I've never been a fan of GW slaughtering scientific names for space marine stuff... just sounds silly to me. I'm thinking something like.... Phil. Yes, Phil the Master of the Mantis Warriors.
@Fifty: It's not broken, it's page roll-over... happens every 30 posts. Annoying, yes... but you learn to roll with it. It's really annoying when the OP posts some new "finished" pics to show off and they get lost on the roll-over, so you have to wait for enough other people to respond to your non-existent post before it'll actually show up.

You should snap a pic of the curb stomper before you pack him up if you haven't yet.
Ive got your package with squad alpha, some heads/skeletons, and the Ven Dread spotlight ready to go. Anything else I should be sending that I am forgetting?
26790
Post by: Gitsplitta
Problem is that he fell apart in transit, remember? I have all the bits but have not attempted to put him back together, however if you'd like to see him I'd be happy to take a snap. I did not paint the sword or any gore. Generally speaking I don't do gore as it rarely turns out well (even though it's something that should be there). So you have a "healthy looking" bad moon that looks like he just came out of one of my boyz squads... save for the sword protruding through his chest and his head being crammed into the ground by the marine's boot! :-)
Nope, your list sounds great. Can't tell you how much I appreciate your expert help with modeling the tac squads... really takes a load off my back. I owe you one... or, ten as the case may be.

Oh yeah, I forgot, lol. Well I will take a pic once I get him back together, though my pics are not as good.
Dont know if I'd call it "expert" help, but I do what I can. I got a bit lazy one one of them and used a Maxmini bionic for a leg (I was getting frustrated with him and hes the coms guy, so it fits). They may still require a bit of GS work, mine is a bit meh. And you its just five atm, the other 5 are still in bits. Oh, one last thing. When you send the curb stomper, could you put in a set of legs or two in there (ones I am working with). I dont get 100% usable parts while hacking and slashing, and have a feeling I will currently come up with 4 1/2 marines in squad Bravo.

Did you get everything I was supposed to send? After I mailed it I had this sinking feeling that I was supposed to send you something else or more copies of the pads and swords... Whalemusic360 wrote: When you send the curb stomper, could you put in a set of legs or two in there (ones I am working with). Sure WM... I'd send you replacements for your Maxmini bionics but they're sold out at the moment (just checked yesterday). Hope they get re-stocked soon... I think I'm going to have a use for some of those. I may have to scavenge legs off of a badly painted used mini I picked up. Shall I strip them for you or can you handle that on your own? The chapter master is *really close* to being done. Have about half the camo to do and the hand-painted Mantis Warrior badge which is the really scary part. One slip and the fig, which I'm very happy with is FUBAR. I also have a name and a pretty darn good back-story that explains a few things about other units in the chapter, namely I've sorted out the whole "Tranquility veteran" thing. As per my style, the story will be short and more of a description than a narrative... but you'll get the idea anyway. I'll post everything some time this weekend.
22192
Post by: whalemusic360
I'm sure I could do it (aka make my brother) if I end up needing them. More of a saftey net then a necessity. No worries on the bionics, if you get some thats cool, if not, no biggy.

I would be delighted to have a Red Scorpion in the ranks endtrans, and it would be wholly appropriate. ISS beta has need of regular troopers and a sergeant (power fist & plasma pistol), take your pick. I'm learning to hate my blog... every time I look at it I have more work to do.
Here he is, as fixed as he's going to get. I think part of my issues with him can be attributed to a "flat" varnish that is actually a semi-gloss. Have tried a very light spray of another brand that has seemed to knock down the gloss a bit & has helped considerably. Also it was varnished several times to protect my previous work & I think the gloss build up has caused some of the clean lines of the figure to appear less so. In any case... I'm satisfied and will not work on it further.

Update: Spent about 2 hours touching up a dozen little things (and I mean little)... re-worked the shadows and highlights on all the wreathes, put some highlights onto his face to show off the helmet shape better, defined the knuckle skulls some, etc. Was just about to take a couple of more pics to show off the "final" product when I decided I just didn't like the backpack... so I ripped if off of him. I'm now in the process of building him a new one.

Ah, the price of progress Very sad times regarding the back pack but I have no doubts it will look better for it.
Checked out that other model as I must say it is well painted. But never think that it is "better" than your mate. Ah he looks much better. The eyes fit with the rest of your force now.
I've not done a power fist/plasma pistol guy yet, so I'll build that one and see what fancyness I can work into it. He can make sure you don't go over to the dark side again. Damn dirty traitors! Normal Red Scorpion colours, or Angstrom camo to match your guys?
As for what I'm after... I shall leave that open to you

Thanks guys. The backpack was my first experiment using the airbrush to do the basecoat for this particular color scheme. Worked fine, like that because the paint applied by the airbrush is much thinner than the yellow primer I was using so it covers up less detail. I debated a back banner, but I've never liked them as they would be stupid do deal with in battle. Opted for a commander's backpack (eagles) with a skull/sun gew-gaw on top and a cluster of purity seals on the back. It's mostly done. Will finish the rest tonight then it's on to the venerable dread!
@endtrans: Since these are supposed to troops from the post-badab war/post-crusade era... a modern scheme would be most appropriate... though the old pattern camo is just too cool for words. How would you like your marine outfitted?

Post by: endtransmission
Post war colours it is then. As I'm aiming more for Badab War era force, I figure your guy would be a great objective marker, so I'm open to whatever kit you want to give him
I just ordered some suitable greys in the Vallejo Air range, so they should arrive just in time to experiment painting your marine with an airbrush

@endtrans: OK my friend, that's all I need to know.
@manoknok: Thanks! Yeah, it has a tendency to sneak up on you. Lots of stuff going on recently... multiple WIP shots of various project, viewer content added, etc. Makes it all the more interesting though and it is helping to make a dream come true.
Speaking of which, I added up all the points of re-painted Mantis Warriors and it comes to just over 2000. Now, that's not all in a single legal army (one too many elites), and I had to fudge 2x 5-man marine squads so I could count the razorbacks (but they'll be done soon enough). Funny thing is that most of the list is made up of troops (2 full scout units, GMS squad alpha & two razorback squads). Add 6-man sternguard, 3 dreads, libby and Kantor.

For Adepticon? Minimal... seismic hammer & chain fist + the melta. I'll build him so he can be upgraded with the rockets and all but I didn't have the points for that this go-round. Place your bets... place your bets.
Can Gits get the dread finished in the next 6 pages?
How many people will post pointless comments in order to eat up those 6 pages??
Will the world end tomorrow?!!
(This feels like it should be narrated in the old B&W Flash Gordon voiceover styley with lots of suspense and mystery)
Ahem. So you're going for three dreads, or two? I've lost count...
Is the twist that it's actually a Red Scorpion dread in disguise?

I think it's the best option for the Rifleman variant. Just be careful fitting the arms or you end up with a real challenge getting them to align right like I did. Don't be in a hurry, take your time with your build and make sure you've got a very sound approach before you start cutting and drilling.

I think my lazy will overpower my joy of cutting for a rifleman, and I'll get the FW ones. I anticipate that when DA get a new book (which wont be for awhile Im sure), they will get a mortis dread with Autocannon double options.

O.K. Here is the *finished* chapter master. Hope he suits. I'm going to swap his original backpack with graven for a different one I plan on using on my MoTF conversion. Lots of tweaking aside from the obvious. worked on getting the definition in the laurel wreathes, skulls, etc. Removed some little casting flaws & generally cleaned it up. Highlighted the face area... etc.
The story of Phillipi Tarse, Chapter Master of the Mantis Warriors, Defender of Tranquility and Founder of the Snipers of Tranquility:
Phlilipi Tarse, Chapter Master of the Mantis Warriors. Tarse was legendary in the Mantis Warriors long before assuming Mastership over the chapter. For centuries Tarse was responsible for the defense of the home world which, due to it's location near the Maelstrom and the many enemies the chapter had made nearby, was under heavy assault each time the chapter mobilized in any significant fashion. His hand picked, elite defense force were masters of defensive action... and while they used the full range of combat tactics they became known as the "Snipers of Tranquility" as their strikes against would-be attackers would have all the surprise and finality of a snipers bullet. All members of the Tranquility Snipers color their equipment in a unique pattern that is respected throughout the Imperium and feared by it's enemies.
Due to his unique responsibilities, Tarse was the only highly placed Mantis Warrior commander to not take part in any aggressive actions against another chapters during the Badab Rebellion (though he did defend Tranquility with unmatched tenacity, ferocity and guile). As such... he was the natural choice to lead his chapter through the darkness of the crusade in the hopes of eventually regaining it's status as a respected member of the Adeptus Astartes. He is also the only high-ranking Mantis Warrior commander who is fully trusted by the Inquisition or other Space Marine Masters.

I'm late to the party as usual, but the eye lens colour change on the chapter master(?) made a massive difference. The blue was lovely but was too light to clash enough with the yellow to make it eye catching, the dark red worked absolute wonders for it.
I don't think the slight gloss is detracting from it too much, and god knows, having it not get chipped is more important then having a very slight after affect on the paint job. Your black gems continue to impress.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and thoughtful advice earlier on... I think Pillipi and I have closure now. :-)
The Ammo Belt never went into the pack in the first place, I wouldn't have changed the pack if that was true. It goes underneath the shoulder pad back into the body. Guess I'm not too worried about physics in 40k at this point...
You guys know how much I enjoy basing, so moving him to a larger base to accommodate that would be a delight. I don't want to be accused of modeling for advantage though... and given how I intend to use him that might be an issue.
I pulled out my forge world Iron clad and other FW bits that were all Christmas presents from my sweetie last night. The dread (which apparently will have a CCW and Seismic Hammer based on my bits) is self explanatory while the bits, along with a few scattered others from graven and BLACKHAND will from the basis for my MoTF conversion. I won't start his build for a while yet, but I wanted to get the pieces together so I wasn't scrambling at the last minute for them. As to the dread... construction process starts tonight. We're going to get hit with a blizzard this evening so I may lose satellite access/internet for a while... hopefully in a day or two I should have an update of some substance.

Its not an issue at all. In fact game wise its a slight disadvantage as more models can enter bases to base with him. Also the GW tourney rules prohibit scaling the base size down, increasing the size is perfectly legal.

I have a serious question for everyone... I've been thinking about this monster blog that I've got... and much as it is fun to watch the numbers of views and pages ramp up... I think it may be getting so bit that's it's too intimidating for new people to bother with. I tried to address this with my summary posts, but I'm not sure they'll solve the problem. What I'm thinking about doing is doing a massive summary post on page 100... the best pics, stories, etc. and then asking the mods to lock the thread. I'll then start a New blog with basically the same title with a "part 2" at the end, and continue on from there just as we have been. I'll probably duplicate the OP from part 1 and the last summary post, then move on from there. Any thoughts? Any Mods want to chime in?? Do you think it's necessary or am I just making a mountain out of a mole hill? Thanks, Gits

So you're not going for the record of Longest Thread on Dakka? Oh wait. That dubious honour goes to "that" thread in the DCM area...
I'm actually considering breaking up my Guard one into separate miniblogs and it's nowhere near as long as your beast of a thread... not that I've done anything update worthy in a while.
I've been thinking that as I work on creating/sculpting a new unit type, that can have it's own blog. Once the task is done the final shots, with a link to the microblog, get added to the main army blog. Future units of the same type can just have painting updates in the main one. That way questions about certain things, like sculpting or casting can be dealt with in the right place.

Not a bad idea endtrans... Once the novelty of having a huge blog wears off your kind of left with this unwieldy thing that starts to work against itself. If this was just a place to show off my work that would be one thing... but since there's so much give-and-take here I think that the size might begin to drag it down and starts making people shy away. Since the whole point of the blog is to help me build my army from concept to finish... that interaction and getting new ideas and opinions are the most critical thing to keep.

Gits, I understand your quandry. As a lurker who just started posting on this site around the end of last Sept/beginng of Oct, I found it a little unnerving to post on a thread that was, at the time, around 75 pages. I remember thinking, "I want to say something, but will anyone notice a single post in this huge thread?" After posting anyways and truly following the thread I obviously began to realize how amazing this thread really is. It's amazing because, despite that some users are constantly popping up on this thread (which is in no way a bad thing), voicing their opinions, whenever I see a random post from someone who doesn't pop in all the time, it still gets a response. Sometimes an overwhelming response, from both you and the other Dakkites.
I can see why you'd consider a new thread or a part 2, because I do believe that those of us that post on this thread will obviously continue to post on your new thread, but I also believe you'd hear from people that may overlook this thread due to it's size. This thread has gotten pretty epic in scale and by the time it reaches page 165 you may get extremely tired of referring to page 100 so people can see all your (current) stuff up to this point. Either way, however, you know we're all on board.

Post by: Yggdrasil
I am not sure, but I feel the pace has increased in the last few months...
So starting from page 1 will probably have it reach quickly past the somewhat critical number of 10+ pages, and you'll quickly feel the same...
But may I'm wrong, maybe the sheer size of it makes it intimidating for the occasional lurkers (actually, I already find it hard to follow lately, though spending way too much time on Dakka these last weeks).
That's as I said before, Git, you've become a victim of your own popularity & success...

I remember asking this question early on in my blog - with the resounding answer being - keep it in the one blog! Of course, I don't think anyone expected it to last 40 (or in your case, 100!) pages... I'm currently trying to put together a "summary" post for mine - due to the same concerns (and not actually having a summary post yet!) - as well as not wanting to lose any gems (Dakka comments) along the way...
My opinion would be to keep it in the one blog. I'm thinking, once I get my summary post out, I may need to discipline myself to do it once every 10 pages (you may get away with more!). You can always update the first post to point to all of the summaries... (and/or your signature)
Of course, if you stop at 100, I've got a chance to surpass you...
In the end - I don't think you will lose anyone either way. You may gain some. Will they be the sort that go through your 7 100 page blogs though? Who knows... Will it actually solve anything? It will still be unwieldy....
I think this may have been my longest unhelpful post!

As someone who did join this thread at about page 80 I must say that reading this whole blog (and those of your boys) was a delight. I have learnt so much and been inspired enough to get my finger out, join dakka and my get my own marines done. I doubt I'm unique in this. I would be concerned others may miss out on this experience unless it was really clearly labelled. Really do need to get the pictures updated....any who....
I would keep it as one as there seems to be a new page ever few days so you will probably be back up to 100 odd within 2 months. The other thing to consider is that maybe it is the size of the blog which help to keep the blog at this size (if you see what I mean?). Maybe amend your sig to have some sort of update on it?
29027
Post by: Heffling
I think you should abandon your marines and spend more time on your orks!
Barring that, though, I would just keep the initial post update and perhaps add a comment to your sig with a link to your "summary" of the thread.
18509
Post by: endtransmission
The other option is to set a point goal for a thread and, once you've reached that goal, do a summary of the thread's achievements as an article, with links back to the important comments or posts. Locking the original thread with a link to the new one and the article would be a good thing to stop it rising from the dead every now and then.
Then the next blog you set the next milestones, including a picture of what you have so far in post one, with links back to the article. So, for instance, my blog so far, if you discount the attempt at making a plasticard tank, reached it's actual conclusion with the pictures from Silver Sorcerer as I'd finished the first 1000 points and had a workable force.

To me at least, 100+ pages isn't a problem. The summaries are a great idea to keep it manageable. I think that a summary in the firs tpost (leading to other summaries) should be OK. And I think it's kinda cool that we cann keep a 100-page post (largely) on topic and alive. Still, if you start a version 2.0, I'm sure the old krew will follow you around, so it's your choice in the end. You would be losing out on a lot of cool comments though...

First, I wanted to thank everyone for weighing in on a very important subject. I have been monitoring your responses all day and for once... have been keeping my own counsel until I felt that I had a good representation of opinions. Regardless of whether my decision coincides with your advice or not, I took it all in and thought about it quite a bit, so don't feel slighted if I went the other way.
I think, for the time being... I will keep the blog as a single story line rather than dividing it. I will however, expand the notes to new readers on the first page in the hopes of getting them interested quickly so they can join in the conversation right away. I will also try to do more frequent summaries, not only for the new folks but for anyone who wants to see what we've all accomplished together.
And not for the stuff you all really want to see. Here's the first WIP of my Iron Clad Mk-IV by Forge World. I wanted this one to look aggressive and menacing, thus a forward pose coming down hill, with outstretched arms like he's ready to put you in a crushing bear-hug (and not the friendly kind). I am inordinately proud of the fact that everything weapon-like on him is magnetized... arms, storm bolter and defensive grenade launchers. The rack for the HK missiles is permanently attached... still trying to figure out how I'm going to magnetize the actual missiles which I'd like to make removable.
Hope you like it!
Note: For those of you who contributed to ISS - alpha, after 15 votes it's rater at 8.42 painting and 9.42 coolness! Since there are only 10 of you who contributed marines... that means 5 other people also thought you did a great job on the squad & voted!!
Congratulations!

Like the build, great position on the legs and the claws are showing ill intent.
I dont understand the gun arm, I havent looked at forge world in some time to get what Im seeing. Like where its pointing and the dread is actually looking at the spot, just not personally getting it.
gonna go read page one now and get caught up on what you are talking about since Ive zoned out of this thread for some time now.

It's not really a gun, it's a sizemic hammer... just another CCW. The head is not permanently positioned, I'll paint it separately and then put it in later on.

For the marine I'll do you a fresh one with a cool cybernetic leg and a comms unit.

Post by: Gitsplitta
Great Miss Dee!, that sounds perfect!
I like the FW Iron Clad. What I don't like about it is that the arms do not fit snugly on the pegs, so you have to come up with some other way to make them stay put... either by permanently gluing them, or by magnetizing like I have. That's bad design work. Wouldn't take much effort on their part to adjust the model through a few moldings and come up with a tighter fit. Also the pegs are much longer than the holes are deep, which again means the figure needs to be modified to fit. No excuse for such blatantly poor craftsmanship when the rest of the model is so well made.
Just FW being lazy, not just at the artist's level but at the supervisory level as well.
Update: Got the figure primed white last night, which is what I do to facilitate the yellow. Then I remembered I'm not really doing this one "yellow". It will be tranquility pattern, but I want this thing to look like it just creaked out of a 1000 year slumber from an underground bunker where it was lost until just being discovered and revived. So, in light of that and Ifnala's comment on her blog that the airbrush cares less about primer color than a normal brush does... I may re-prime in black in order to facilitate the darker shadows and mechanical parts of the model.
Need some advice again: Given the premise described above... I am thinking of using a medium to light brown base coat with highlights that are lighter brown with only slightly yellow overtones. This to represent the yellow being faded and discolored though centuries of subterranean entombment. Over that then, will be heavy weathering and chipping. The camo pattern will be executed in grey tones rather than my typical black. There will be rust and wear on the metal parts of the dread.
I really want to give the impression that this dread has just creaked to life after a millennia of slumber, and just given enough attention to be functional again... adding to it's menace as this ancient, malevolent thing (at least to it's enemies).
Thoughts??

Post by: endtransmission
I like the idea that you want it looking worn and old.
One question though... if it's just woken from millenia of slumber surely it's not going to have the tranquility camo on it as it will have to have been entombed well before the tranquility campaign started and there wouldn't have been a need for it to don that scheme.
Whichever scheme you do go for, to get a more worn look to the paint I'd probably choose a colour for the undercoat that would be given to any dread before it's painted in chapter colours and make the actual chapter colours/camo very patchy so the undercoat is showing through in places. Also liberal usage of a dust coloured weathering powder and some moss/foliage could add to the aged, slumbering behemoth look. Something like the robots in Laputa

Trouble is they are venerated relics of the chapter and are lovingly maintained by teams of servitors and techpriests. So if anything if he's only just been awoken he should be gleaming but with a crud load of litanies and seals and all the other bits from a thousand campaigns....

That +1. And if they gave it the tranq colors, it would be a fresh, new paint job, and not old and faded.

In the revised version of my fluff (see the little story that goes with my chapter master)... the tranquility camo pattern is reserved for those select, elite units that are part of the Mantis Warrior home world planetary defense force... which would go back many thousands of years. So the camo pattern is legit... just means he bore the responsibility of defending the chapters home world all those centuries ago. My idea is that he was essentially set in a kind of stasis after a major campaign... probably heavily damaged at an outpost where they didn't have the facilities to repair him... so he was stabilized and stored in an bunker until he could be taken back to the fleet. The outpost was then wiped out, and the dread presumed lost in an area that was over-run with enemies. Centuries later, perhaps after this territory was reclaimed... his resting place was discovered, he was reactivated & given only necessary repairs to get him back into battle as the Badab War was no raging. And... I guess it was always in my mind that the "Tranquility Campaign" happened millennia ago... so the idea that the camo pattern is a new occurrence isn't one that I've held. Interesting idea with the undercoat... I'll roll that around for a while. I'm pretty happy about being on schedule. Going to try and enforce some painting and modeling discipline in my figures from now on so I don't spend endless hours painting each night which really gets old. Set a schedule, stick to it, take a night off every once in a while for family stuff. Keeping some balance should result in a better overall product and a happier me.

Meh, it's not that big an issue because it's a fairly simple fix... it's just annoying that the "standard" mold of this figure has such a fundamental flaw (I think my FW venerable is the same way, but since I was building my own arms it was less of an issue). They don't fix it because they don't have to... we'll still line up for hours and pay exorbitant shipping fees to buy them.
Just lazyness on their part, that's all.

lol, good question, but I don't think dreadnoughts eat. A lot of the time the person entombed in a dreadnought isn't much more then a head sustained by a life support system of some kind, all it needs is power. Besides once they are neatly put away I don't think anyone visits them or checks up on them so they could easily be forgotten, this is 40k, they can't even remember how to build their own tanks, lol.
but Gitsplitta you are right, my time line is a bit off, if he is in the Badab Era then he could just be really old and crusty. I do agree with Whalemusic though, he does kind of look like a Steve.

Sorry about that, Heff. Here's your post (preserved for just such an error on my part. Heffling wrote:I've converted the TL Big Shootas on my buggies to have rokkits. What I did was:
Tools:
Small Drill Bit (I think it's 1/16")
Magnets - Pair of 1/16" for each rokkit
Rod - 1/16" diameter, about 1/4-3/8" long
Paper Clip, small diameter, with both ends bent straight.
1) Drilled into both the rokkit and the big shoota barrel. about 1/4". I slightly overbored the big shoota barrel by dragging the drill bit around the side while drilling (so not deeper, just enough to slightly expand the hole).
2) Glue and insert the rod into the rokkit. This should leave around 1/8-3/16" sticking out.
3) Checked fitting of the rod by inserting it into the barrel. I dont' want the barrel to "grip" the rod, which is why it's overbored slightly. And I need to have enough room to fit a pair of magnets inside.
4) Used the paperclip and inserted it into the barrel. I marked the depth and checked against the rod sticking out of the rokkit to confirm I had enough room for two magnets. Sometimes, I would have to drill the hole a bit deeper.
5) Extremely lightly glued the magnet to the end of the paperclip, making sure to note polarity first.
6) I placed a small amount of glue into the barrel, and used the non-magnet side of the paperclip to make sure the glue was pushed in.
7) I then used the magnet size to push the magnet to the bottom of the barrel. I let the glue in the barrel dry with the paperclip attached, then twisted and removed the paperclip, leaving the magnet inside.
If the magnet didn't stay the first time, I redrilled to remove glue and try again.
8) Once everything was dry (30 minutes later), I took my rokkit and checked the fit to make sure no excess glue had dried to the sides. If some had, I re-drilled and overbored the sides.
9) I doubled checked the magnet polarity and glue bond by inserting the stack of magnets. The overbore insures they aren't getting stuck into the sides, and pulling the magnet stack out checks the integrity of the magnet glue in the barrel. This also verifies my polarity.
10) I carefully glued a magnet to the center of the rokkit rod.
11) I carefully filed down around the magnet after 30 minute drying to remove excess glue from the rod surface.
12) Insert the rokkit into the barrel and viola, convertible big shootas.

OK, so no strong opinions on the dread painting scheme save that no one believes that a dreadnought could be "lost & presumed dead", then rediscovered millennia later when the planet was recaptured.
Given the flaw in my logic then, I think what I'll do is paint it as a normal tranquility vet, then really beat the heck out of it in order to represent the fact that it's been in constant hand-to-hand combat during it's deployment and due to the nature of the Badab War... fixing the superficial things is probably not a hight priority for the chapter OR the dreadnought operator.
Does that work better? It will certainly simplify my job as the painter quite a bit.

It's too bad, I quite liked the idea of it...
Maybe it's not they forgot about their hero/relic, but were cut out from it (unbeatable foe, overwhelming invasion force, Inquisitorial ban, etc...) and could only wait but for a proper time to reach it back again. And when they do, they're in such a dire situation that they had to get it back into the fray without much maintenance (or at least re-painting).
On a side note, I have problems too with the FW Seismic Hammer, I was considering buying a FW Ironclad these last days, but that deterred me from doing it... Come one, it doesn't even look like a hammer! At least, on the GW one, you can guess the vibrations it can produce!

I would use it as a balancer. If you are thinking that there is going to be to much yellow in your green marines, make it green. If you think the Vets could use more facetime, go with yellow. I have 1 or 2 spare GW seismic hammers if someone needs them that I would be more then willing to trade off.

That's kind of what I was thinking... maybe the dread had a section of hillside or building collapse and bury him, so the suit goes into "life sustain only" mode and sends out a weak recovery signal. It's only centuries later when the planet is recaptured and the marines are close enough to receive the signal that the dread is recovered.

Jackhammer = air-powered chisel for blowing apart concrete
The giant, crane-mounted versions that construction crews use for taking out old roads are pretty impressive. I assume that's where the inspiration for the FW Seismic Hammer came from.

No, this one is going to be a T-vet. The rest of my dreads (I have 5 others) are all normal... but both of my Mk-IVs are going to be tranquility pattern.
To answer your question fatty, the majority of this army will be tranquility veterans. Just the way it works out fluff-wise.
T-vets: sternguard, MoTF, 2 dreads
Normal: 2 tactical squads + razorbacks
Now my regular mantis warrior army will have the above as the t-vets and everything else will be normal, so even though they dominate my little 1000 pt Adepticon force, they'll be much rarer when you consider the army as a whole.

Actually, there is fluff to support this type of thing happening. In the Soul Drinkers nini series that's happening in Hammer and Bolter a dread is discovered that was long thought lost. It's not a great stretch to think that whatever underground facility was housing the dread was bombed, collapsing the entrance. Everyone assumed that the facility had gone too as all contact was lost, but a couple of rooms and a backup generator survived, providing just enough power to sustain the dread's slumber through the ages. o I say go for the long lost dread idea. It's cool and there's existing fluff to back you up on it
The battle damage looks great, though I do agree, the front of the seismic hammer needs some damage to it. Maybe heat it up a slightly and squash the nose of it a bit to look as if it's really been used? Also, lots of dust and oil coating the front of the hammer as well as almost bare metal on any paintwork as that's where it will take most damage

@Khain & endtrans: Agree completely about the sizemic hammer, will adjust.
@endtrans: I suppose it is confusing... there are actually two different Mantis Warrior armies that I'm working on, separated by 100 years of time, the Badab War, and the Excile (crusade). The Badab era army is the 1000 points that I'm cramming to get done by Adepticon (April 1st). They still have their tanks available (razorbacks in this case).
The second army (and the one I really started at the beginning of this blog) is post-crusade. They are a chapter that's been brought to the brink of destruction by their crusade and are in a major rebuilding process. They have new equipment (Mk 7/8 armor, blackhand's helms and packs, etc) but have developed a new style of fighting that does not rely on tracked or wheeled vehicles.
I actually think I'm going to pursue both armies, and make an 1850 pt army that is Badab Era, and largely mechanized (but sticking with Mk-1 vehicles). My main Mantis Warrior army, probably reaching 3000ish points eventually, will be a post crusade army based around pods, dreads and scouts. Though the new flying thingies would be very fluffy if they ever become generally available.
@tipios: Well, once I got going there wasn't much point in holding back...

They should be compatible as soon as the DH codex is available Gits. You should be able to run it as counts-as but still have it painted in a mantis warrior scheme. Besides as a 100 other people have said "there is no way that GW will limit the kit to only one army, it doesn't make sense to restrict their sales in such a way."

DH?
You are wise, oh Lennysmash.
Can't say I'm a big fan of the models... but especially for my post-crusade (i.e. "modern") army they are just too fluffy and would give me desperately needed Heavy slots in a tankless army.

Damge to the nose of the seismic hammer should be similar to the damage from regular use of a sec of bolt cottuers. The paint should be scratched and there should be a decent sized impression on the front of the hammer itself, as well as a decent amount of paint scratching along the arm itself, as for when it may have penetrated lighter armor or broke through walls.

Nice damage representation. Particually the lightning claws shoulder damage is well done. I'd like to see a tut on how you did the specifics damage types.

@Solar_lion: files, gravers and small, round rotary tool grinding bits used very gently... Kind of thing that would be much more easily conveyed on a you tube video than a bunch of still shots.
@Vit: Yeah... I've seen MT's Stormraven... sweetness itself. But working with plasticard is not my bag. I can barely assemble one of GW's kits without screwing it up... much less scratch build something myself.
I'm spraying the base coat on the dread right now, so I can guarantee that it WILL be "painted" before page 100. I hope to have the yellowing/gradients done today. That's my goal anyway. I won't do zenithal lighting on this one as I don't want it to clash stylistically with the other one, but I will do my best to blend the shades wit the airbrush in the same fashion as on the venerable. I hope my small needle come in today or tomorrow... I'm going to need it with this project.

I have been on a *very* disciplined schedule with him... one goal each night and so far I've met each one. Goal for tonight is having the base coat done... problem is I still haven't decided which way I want to go with it. Guess it'll be a "game time decision" (as they say in American football).
please dont remeber me the pain of the saints losing there first and only play off game.
nice battle damage there Git really like too see a tut on that

Thanks fatty!
Forgot to say, before base coating I did add a considerable amount of damage to the seismic hammer and in a few more spots around the model. I found my push graver which facilitated this quite a bit. I'm just about to do the sepia wash over the base coat, then I'll start working the shading back up through the gold tones to the yellow. If I can accomplish that much today, it'll be a day well spent.
To All:
I guess I'll mention that I am in the market for Mk-1 vehicles... specifically rhinos/razorbacks, predators and land raiders. Paint job does not matter but condition of the model does. There's no rush, but if you know someone interested in modernizing their force, please send them my way.

Bloomin heck! Been gone about a week and The Beast gains another 8 pages! Had a bit of catch up reading and I feel I can now voice my opinions.
I'll start with the Chapter Master...
-An excellent paint job and the definition around the lenses makes a difference to it's overall appearance. It's easily on par, if not better than, your other vets. I like all the little details and the back pack fits the model well (the icon thing is suitably 'Inquisitorial'). It was a nice surprise to come back to this blog and find Phil painted.
Length of the Beast...
I find it incredible how much this blog has flourished. I still remember following this blog back in June when it was still on 17 pages and I also remember my first post in it back on page 23. TBH, I like this blog the way it is but I wouldn't mind upgrading to Mantis Warriors 2.0...
And finally the Iron Clad...
-I like the idea of the dread being lost but it would also be cool to see it in refreshed, all be it damaged, colours. However, I do think some of the pistons and mechanical gubbins shouldnbe partly rusted.
And a little footnote...
OT from this blog but concerning trade. I have an unused, un-painted Trygon Prime (for thing 2) that I would be happy to add it to the package of bitz I've been meaning to send to you. I have no use for it (can't even remember when I got it) and it would be nice to see it go to a good home. PM me if thing 2 is interested in having one.

Your painted dread is nice apart from the las muzzles painted in red, they clash horribly with the light green. Loving the work on the forgeworld dread so far. Might see it painted in ohhh.. 20 pages? lol

Post by: Gitsplitta
@ GS: PMd... and thanks. Appreciate the comments on Phil. I'm happy with him... he sure looks good mixed in with the rest of the sternguard that's for certain. Blog will stay as one. I think there's so much activity lately because I've been pushing so hard to get the army built and painted, but because I'm doing a bunch of new things there's a lot of opportunity for community involvement. Iron clad will also not be too worn... it'll be a little less lemon yellow than the rifleman as I started with a darker base coat... the slightly more somber tone suits it I think. Other than that and a *lot* of battle damage... it'll be in fighting trim. @Perkustin: Yeah... in the old days that's how I'd differentiate las cannons from other types of guns for easy recognition. I will probably re-paint those tips at some point to bring them in line with the rest of the dread. Just lazy. Today's offering (and I'm done painting for the day): Got the yellow done. I love my airbrush. The head is just resting in there at the moment for the photograph, but I will probably leave it white.

GAAAAAH GITS KNOCK IT OFF! Your stuff is looking way too cool- I really gotta figure out my airbrush so I can get my stuff looking half as good as yours AT LEAST! The airbrush really breathes life into the models. seems to make yellow an easier color to paint As to the M-1 Rhinos, Ive got a M-1 that I'll prolly end up just cutting apart... Might need a bit of TLC, but I know I have all the bits. ahhhh wait... scratch that. bolters on top seem to have disappeared. I have: => the aforementioned Bolter-less rhino => the Lascannon sponsons for a Pred (one lascannon got broken in the middle, probably fixable) =>the TL lascannons from the turret (looted the turret already for a Kustom SAG, sorry Gits) => the Whirlwind base thingy + gunner, it came to me sans-turret The parts are stripped, just a little stubborn red paint stuck on the WW bits. Rhino's painted red. Overall good condition apart from the missing bolters. Im more than willin to part with it if youre needin more than lenny's crazy auction. (seriously! whered ya find that deal, Len!? )

Replying from Thing 1's jazz concert... That's a series of 4 different colors sprayed in sequence. Dark shade is Vallejo Air ochre. Base color is VA golden yellow. Two highlight colors, top layer is a very old GW color "Bad Moon yellow" , God help me when the last of that's gone as it forms the "pop" in my yellow.

Iirc, Vallejo makes a color called Bald Moon Yellow (oho see what they did there?) thats an exact match to Bad moon. Oh and a random question.... How are you priming in the Winter? OK. finally at my computer so I can answer properly...
@Ramos: I'm very interested in what you have. Please PM me.
@Ramos again: Thank you!! That will save my butt. I have a large room that is "inside" the main part of our house... finished (painted drywall) but just a plywood floor, above the garage kind of on it's own. It has good ventilation in summer and a strong ceiling fan. So I can prime all year without bothering anyone.
Len and I are watching a couple of bulk auctions... one is decent, the other is lots of busted stuff... probably could scavenge through it for a half dozen decent things once all the parts were collected and assembled. There's enough in the first that we're both interested in to make it worth our while (and the stuff is in good shape)... none too sure about the second one.
@Commander Cain: I agree, scorch marks will be about the last thing that gets put in after the dread is painted and camouflaged.
@BBL: Stop posting just to push me over to 100 pages... that's cheating! (and not contributing to the blog in a meaningful way)

I am so unhappy with you right now blackhand. I was excited today that my local meijer finally got a new shipment of salt and I managed to get a hold of some to thaw my drive way meanwhile on the other side of the world you were playing in a paddle pool, how unfair.
Congrats on 100 pages, by the way.

BLACKHAND...... You make me weep.
I curse this icy weather.... no painting at all unless you either stockpile primed models, or devise an elaborate scheme of spraypainting indoors....
Protip- HOLYCRAPLOTS of overspray. dust will get EVERYWHERE if you spray inside. Say, for example, a white-tiled and furnished bathroom.
And WHOO!!! 100 Gitsplittastic Pages!!!

Guys, just get a large old box, cut it in half on the diagonal, and you have an instant spray booth. No over-spray... problem solved. Then all you have to worry about are particulates in the air. My airbrush spray booth is exactly that. Works perfectly well.

LOL! Yeah... don't even go there (739 pages and climbing). I'd like to think that this blog has the most consistent high quality over time thing going for it. It certainly has one of the most involved group of participants... that's why it's so big... it isn't just me showing off what I've done. There are tons of reader generated original content posts throughout! That's also what makes good. It would be a lot less interesting if it was just my stuff... but it's OUR stuff, with our various talents and stills, all organized loosely around a general principal (the Mantis Warrior concept).
So contratulations to us all, we made it to the century mark and in spite of BBL... did it with some useful content!! (poke, poke)
"Barkeeper, Canfields for everyone!"
(Mr. Magoo/Jim Bacchus reference for those of you too young to know.)
Back on topic...
I'm not sure what my goal for the day will be... Thing 2 is coming off a long punishment for misbehavior in school and I promised I'd work on his Warrior squad with him. I think going in and picking out all the metal parts in black would be an achievable mark to reach.
