Need some advice from modellers with flight stand experience here.
Me and a friend have decided it could be amusing to build some niche armies for local 2v2 tournaments.
He’s decided to run steam tanks (command tank, 2 normal, 1 converted to be a hurricanum)
Original plan was then for me to do the same, but the new KO book as sparked some ideas.
Since he has land covered I plan to run air.
Having had the airships before I know the flying stems border on weak on all except the Gunhauler.
Has anyone used clear rod on an ironclad or frigate at all please?
If so, how did it work out?
I previously used some ruins along with the stem to support an ironclad as the stem alone is stressed badly by the weight.
This time though, I want to have it look as if it’s flying rather than grazing against a rock pillar.

Just get acrylic/metal rods, they go from 1mm tup to 25mm thick,s o any size you like really.
Here is an example from amazon, note i'm not saying buy this one from this person, just use as an example
https://www.amazon.com/Diameter-12-Acrylic-PLEXIGLASS-25/dp/B07FW2D7GB/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=acrylic+rod&qid=1579394165&sr=8-3

That looks pretty decent actually.
Assuming the best way to attach it would be to file it down into a taper near the top like the normal stands and drill a hole in the ship.
The stand it comes with is the same one as the Gunhauler and that is just about good enough for the hauler.
The frigate is delicate at best but the ironclad just wont stay on it.

Assembly and cleaning will take long enough, the painting will likely kill me lol.
If I can pull it off though, there’s 160 chainrasps done.

That's quite an elephant there. It makes it easier if you break it up by the basic box size and focus on just that one group at a time.

My main AoS project for 2020 is:
Continuing to grow the local shops AoS scene. In a 4 month span we've gone from 2 of us to 9 players (with a 10th trying to decide what faction he wants to join in with)
It started back in Oct.
Myself & one of the guys I play Pathfinder/D&D with decided to play some actual AoS. Put some of our long dormant WHFB stuff + some of the cool new models GWs been releasing to use beyond on our D&D table.
And so we set up game on a free evening down at the shop....
A week later we were joined by another of our D&D group who had the Skaven 1/2 of the 8e(?) WHFB starter box - picked up cheap for use as wererats awhile back. His only WH xp to date had been with the Total War PC games.
And so we set up another game down at the shop. His tiny Skaven force + a matching value of my own ancient Skaven vs the undead.
One of the guys watching us play has Nurgle demons (mostly from playing 40k)
Now there were 4 of us. So we set up a Path to Glory campaign. Night Haunts, Skaven, Nurgle, & my own Fyreslayers.
As we played, this attracted 3 more people. So our 2nd (current) PtG campaign consists of 7 players: NH, Skaven, Nurgle, Gloomspite (me, I switched forces) + Khorne Demons, Tzeentch Demons, & a brand new, 0xp, Seraphon player (who's eagerly awaiting his new Tome).
Great fun is being had.
We now have 2 more players (Beasts of Chaos & Sylvanth) looking to join us for PtG III.
And now we've begun playing general Multi-player AoS games on Saturdays as well. Our favorite way to play most minis games at the shop on Sat evening is 2 -3 players per side on the 8x4 table. So for AoS we're looking at "Bring about 1k pts."
This has attracted a 10th player - no WH/ AoS experience, but like the models, so he's doing his research on what to join us with.
My goal? Add +1 player per month through 2020.
Other than that?
*At some point this year I'm going to build a Bonereaper force. I just like the models too much not to.
*I've got to paint up another Mangler Squig soon. The running joke in my circle is that my models have to "Earn their paint" by doing something notable during play. Well this guy? He earned it. He entered play with a primer base coat. He then proceeded to eat 2! Bloodthirsters, a units of Bloodcrushers, 1/2 a unit of Blood Letters & then exploded all over a Slaughter Priest in our last game.

Here’s my Hurricanum / Bloodwrack Shrine, which will have two different crews, depending on whether I’m fielding it in my Daughter’s of Khaine army, or my Cities of Sigmar list.
This is about 90% complete, still need to add arm and reigns, greenstuff some gaps etc. Then build a second crew.

Social media has been a great tool in helping my scene grow. Meet-ups every 2nd week, various games between, take pictures of the games and the playspace with the people gaming, post them on public hobby/boardgame groups and we usually get a few people interested and some even want to join in.
In hobby-ing related things, I'm working on Arkhan the Black, and trying to make him not the wobbliest piece of gak in the world. I'm going to pin one of the mount's front 'hands' in to one of the Stormvault scenary brazier pieces, and make a smoke effect billowing up from the brazier and around the claw. The pin itself has gone well, now comes the hard part of making the solid smoke. THEN painting the whole model and base

Sure, that'd work too. Especially if all I was aiming for were more players.
But doing it the old fashioned hard way: face to face selling, 1 person at a time, preferably to people who aren't already AoS players (or even miniatures gamers) is more fun

Been working on a Beastman warband. I rebased them onto 25mm bases because I prefer them, and will be using these for Age of Fantasy from 1 Page Rules (I hope people don't mind me posting them here, the 1 Page Rules are a direct port for AoS). I had a Beastman army in 6th and 7th edition Warhammer, but sold it when I moved country back in the day and I have regretted it for years, so getting these guys painted up has been really nice for me. I love Beastmen. Planning to add Frostgrave Gnolls to this as well, and convert some Centigor from Marauder Horsemen, and a metal Reaper Demagorgon for a Jabberslythe stand in.
Bestigors were hard to paint!
Ungor with Bows, not a thing last time I played Beastmen but a good addition.
Gors, the classic.
Cygor, with an excessive amount of skull based fashion accessories.

I've now got enough AoS-themed bits accumulated to sufficiently spruce up the old world designs I hope.

Really like the choice to keep the wing "fingers" flesh coloured, I think it works really nicely with your scheme and makes sense. Somehow more horrific too, like it no longer looks like a pretty lady nestled amongst all these monstrous bits but more of a monstrous whole.

Thank you very much Da Boss and Ninthmusketeer! It always amazes me the stories we can tell with our miniatures by just using colour and hearing your interpretation of this matching very closely to my own makes me very happy that I was able to at least tell part of the story I wanted with this model.

Getting into AOS after man years and Éditions away from Warhammer (5th edition I believe). Always had a soft squishy spot for Nurgle, so maggotkin looks like the way I’m headed. I prefer the fallen/corrupted human side over demon side.
First test figures including a model I had stored away from Hell Dorado I believe which may be an objective or a familiar.
Have about 1200 points assembled currently, two Maggotkin starters and a lord of Plague.
76825
Post by: NinthMusketeer
Hm, I really like the overall image you are going for here but the color choice just strikes me as a bit too... healthy? I feel like tinting the skin one way or another to give it a pallid/grimy/jaundiced look would go a long way. But that is only my personal opinion. Regardless I like the 'clean' and organised paint work you have done here, it looks like you really have an eye for 'coloring inside the lines' so to speak, in a very good way.
4042
Post by: Da Boss
I dunno, I really like the palid, purplish skin tone there.
30672
Post by: Theophony
Thanks for the comments guys.
I really like the plaid purple skin tones over the greenish hues normally seen on Nurgle models. I really want to stress the fact that they were human once and have succumbed to the influence of Nurgle more than all things green = Nurgle. Once I start to develope my demon side of the army I’ll think about doing more green skin tones, but I just like the sickly rotting flesh, which may become my demon colors too.
Anyway my Maggotkin army has exploded like unchecked Corona Virus. I found some great deals on Maggotkin starters (so I bought them )
My Army looks like this to pull from.
5starter boxes of Maggotkin
5Lord of Blights
10Pusgoyle Blightkings
25 Putrid Blightkings on foot
1 Lord of Plagues
The Wurmspat Underworlds warband
The Glottkin
And conversion parts
The previously posted objective victim
The old Mordheim Town Cryer
And a new add on from the dents and dings.
A plastic mammoth from somewhere which has no ears, tusks or tail. Perfect starting point for a converted Harbinger of Decay. Hopefully no one would have a problem with it being on a larger base (shown on a 50x90 oval above).
Painted my test Pusgoyle yesterday.
Started on the Wurmspat.
And the old town crier is ready for a repaint.
Stay safe. Working at a hospital I should entertaining right now .

Oh wow that paint scheme on the plague drone looks awesome!
As to base size, generally speaking having a larger base is OK (within reason) but having a smaller base is a no-no. Smaller bases are generally advantageous. Fortunately one can simply blue-tack or magnetize smaller bases on top of larger ones if it really comes to that.

Lovely model Thadin! I really like the bone scheme and the contrast with the skulls. I noticed the fore-arm skulls didn't get done in the same contrast though. I think your armor could use another layer of highlight to really make it pop too, but may not be worth it if it isn't your strong suit (broad layering like that isn't one of mine). The model it beautiful as-is.

Forming them into units/adding them to existing units, matching paint jobs to my existing force....
In the end I'll end up adding a few more spears, 5 wolves (got riders but no mounts), and tracking down about a dozen oop metal forest goblin archers to round out the units.

It was definitely a project they tried, but abandoned for one reason or another. I wouldn't expect anything based on Fimir to come out. Forge World is focused on specialist games, more than creating content for the Games Workshop tentpole games.

I love how deep the sculpted plates are on these plastic models, so it really has amazing textures to work with. After struggling to make the dark blue work on the back, I realized that using a light blue, not a shade wash, made the individual plates stand out so much better.

I’m going terrain crazy in preparation for armies on parade. I already built a small Hirst arts temple, and I plan on building a larger one, a hill for it to stand on, and winding road that goes to it. Hopefully I can finish all my Lumineth in time, assuming they come out soon,
Anyways, using the miscast template I managed to build an elven Waystones out of cardboard, and been working on it to be an objective marker for my army, or as a piece of scatter terrain / scene for my diarama.
That, and I have been working on building my foamcore skills up by tracing a Hysh symbol and painting it, all in order to practice for my big temple. Plus, I finally figured out how flocking works, and managed to do some pretty cool work on the Waystones to keep it from being yet another gray block.

Some misc pieces, around 15 goblins (mostly detail work), a mangler squig, & 12 orks to go. Oh, and I figured out a color combo I really like for my squigs - so repainting 15 of the little beasts....
Up after that I have some easy Sylvanth/Cities Of Sigmar stuff to finish off by July.
And then it'll be onto my DoK stuff - a min. sized Melusai Nest Battalion + Hag - build & paint 22 models by roughly July 11th. Once I settle on a skin tone that'll be a really quick project.

I got the shiny new elves and pulled a all-nighter to get them built and almost completely painted.
The Vanari Wardens have 3d printed total war shadow warrior helmets that I found online and modified in blender.
I am aware of the mold lines and don't really care.
I also gave an isle of blood mage a spare Dawnrider helmet to use as a Cathallar
*sips caffeinated beverage* I'm glad I don't have to work tomorrow.

The dark steel and yellow look fantastic, I love it.
For myself, I did some practice on Sisters of Averlorn, and going to have them as stand-in Sentinels. Going with mostly the box art, but darker gold, and I'm going to end up doing black robes, instead of cream. Still got to wait til Tuesday for my stuff to arrive. The ones in purple were me testing out schemes, and deciding I didn't like it.

Very striking scheme you've gone with on the sisters. I'd have been tempted to go with orange magical bows for the contrast with the blue but the green you've gone with looks nice too.
I'm not a fan of the new archers so if I end up collecting them Shadow Warriors can pull double duty with my City.

Looking great! Got any more big conversions/kitbashes planned?
Also probably of helpful if you end up collecting Lumineth, the Shadow Warriors/Sisters of Avelorn are just about the same size as the new Warden models, so their scale won't look off or weird when they're side-by-side.

Cheers for the scale comparison. I love most of their range but nice to know the classics fit in if needed.

@Elmir - I must say the finish and texture on that miniature is absolutely beautiful.
A new member on the thread here! Hopefully going to play AoS with a friend who has already started collecting their army.
I just couldn't make up my mind on a force (I keep jumping between all of them!) so have ordered the big hardback rulebook - I feel I need to learn some of the background, look at the pretty pictures and hopefully get inspired!
So just to say have enjoyed reading a good bulk of this thread and seeing what other people have been doing, hopefully will have something of my own to contribute before too long!

With the new anvil allowing for custom hero’s I’ve decided to bite the bullet and get this guy done.
It’s been nothing but cursed from the start though.
First incarnation was dragged up the garden and chomped on by a pet.
A while later I began to rebuild it slowly.
After getting to roughly where it was in the first place I moved house.
Sadly it got crushed by the company that were helping us move (2 warhammer cases got crushed, despite being labelled fragile)
To make it worse, some of the parts had got free in their truck, leading to missing parts.
Finally begun to rebuild it yet again though, hopefully getting it finished this time especially since I can use it in games.

Mounts mostly done (just some finishing touches & snow on the base) for my old school Arkhan conversion. Rider's about 1/4 done. Been working on this on and off for months now, will finally be finishing it just in time for the petrifex nerf to make him no longer good. :p

I have made some progress on my Slaves to Darkness army. I finished up all of the older sculpt Chaos Warriors which I already mostly had done. The I put into some work on the Warcry cultist. And yes, I do actually run them in AoS. Mostly from Rally the Tribes Command Ability from the Ravagers Damned Legion which is the best fit for a Chaos Warrior/Chaos Knight focused army as far as I can tell.
Chaos Warriors and Sorcerer Lords
Untamed Beasts
Raptoryx
The Unmade
My first fully painted army game of Age of Sigmar. And yes, it went horribly for me. Still, it was nice to field a fully painted army and when they look that good, they don't care about losing.

Brand new Gloomspite army under way.
This weekend I built......
3 x Rockgut Trolls, 10 x Squig Hoppers, 20 Herd Squigs, 5 Fanatics, 1 Loonboss on foot, and started the sub-assemblies of 2 Mangler Squigs.
First 10 Herd Squigs are in the booth, having had initial and touch up Wraith Bone base coat. Just awaiting the arrival of a set of Contrast Paints, which should allow me to rumble right through the irritating “painting your entire army” stage.
On order? New army set, 2 x Squig Herds and 3 x Grot Mobs.

That looks amazing. I am still rather intimidated by mine. So much so, I think it partly (a very small part truthfully) had me take a break from painting. Only this weekend has me back painting after a couple of months. And I still don't dare tackle my Lumineth. I know once I get a good system and some items done it won't be that bad, but for now, I am stick to the easier parts of my painting backlog.
Again, I am truly impressed by the crispness of everything. Incredible work there.

1 Mega-Gargant (Gatecrasher)

I've had grad school since August and put aside my paint brushes so I could focus on studying. Since I felt confident in the material and was up on my studying, I took some time to get some Warcry done. I split the Scions of the Flame with a friend who took the terrain and elf half. Decided on a Salamanders Theme with more dark brown skin rather than black. Had fun doing the flame effect.

Picked up the second Season of Blood Bowl, using the Black Orc team as extra Ardboyz for my Ironjawz. I think I’ll use Varag Ghoulchewer as a warboss. While I was at Miniaturemarket today I saw they had one of the warcry Ironjawz boxes left. Grabbed that as well.
That brings my newest AOS army up to 1800 points.
Did just a bit of painting today, but got the full Black Orc team assembled as well as Varag and the troll, the ogre, Griff and half the human team done as well. I really love the character of the Go Lin’s from the Orc team.

Currently working on a Great Unclean One and finally finishing my Nurgle Start Collecting. I already had a box of plaguebearers done from the original plastic release, so now I have a nice little plague daemon army to mess around with. Eventually want to paint up my Stormcast Start Collecting for some Order vs. Chaos themed battles. Might add a couple of Beasts of Nurgle to the Plague Boys before then.

The alarith really showed me where my mind draws the line;
Stone Mage: He's a wizard, wizards SHOULD be weird and flamboyant. If he didn't want to be noticed he wouldn't be on a carpet on a rock on a tree on some other rocks.
Battle Cattle: It's an immense construct inhabited by an elemental spirit. Symbolism and style matters as much as literal form when it comes to magic, and when push comes to shove it's a titanic ox-stone-man-thing that probably weighs a few dozen tons; it doesn't matter what it's shaped like.
Infantry: OMG WTF are those hats how do they do ANYTHING let alone fight.
But seriously, that nice crisp paint work goes very well with the models, a strong stylistic synergy so to speak.

Here's my progress on the Fatboi.
Lots of bits basically done now, horns and teeth need a wash, toenails and fingernails a highlight, need to dot out the eyes and weather the metal and cloth down, but the majority of the fleshy parts are completely done which is cool.
I love the bellymouth so I used it, rather than the guts. I think it looks awesome.
The base is a mixture of superglue and pva with patches of milliput and tentacles from this kit and the spawn kit as well as some eyeballs. It's gonna get a light grey undercoat and a heavy white drybrush and then a purple wash to create a sort of Realm of Chaos effect that I really like. Eyes will be painted out in vivid orange for counterpoints.
Lovely model, so much fun to paint and really easy to make it look good.

When the kit first came out I was really disappointed with the price. It took a bit to allocate funds but I did end up getting one. I was wrong. It is so worth it, such a fantastic kit in so many ways. Looking forward to seeing your completed rendition of it!

Post by: Da Boss
I was also really not sure about the price. The Great Unclean One has been my favourite Greater Daemon ever since I read the disgusting description of it in the 2e Codex Imperialis, and I have always enjoyed all the different versions of the model. But I kinda chickened out on getting one for ages. Then, with the pandemic, I wanted to support my local shop by buying something, and I figured feth it, what better to go for than the Greater Daemon of Plague. The guy behind the counter thought it was pretty funny. I really had to psyche myself up to assemble it, and then it sat for months just undercoated and washed on my painting desk. But now that I have started it I am having great fun and although I know my paintjob won't be perfect, the model is actually very forgiving to work on.

I've been paying my Greywater Fastness Army and have come across dilemma pertaining to painting yellow. I tried following the book method which is Averland and followed by a wash of Cassandra Yellow and then doing a layer of Averland followed by an edge highlight of Dorn Yellow. The result for me takes far too much time do to having to carefully use three different washes and the effect is a yellow that feels far too bright for my taste and too orange.
The other is a mustard route that uses constant use of a mix of XV88 and Yriel yellow which gives a more grim dark feel and feels to me quicker and less messy. Now however having painted several in the new fashion I am at a weird point where I feel like I should do something about the models painted in the old style as they look too different from that unified look I want

Hmm, I think it wouldn't be too hard to go back and redo it with a paint over with light coats to redo it.
Having them be fresh or elite would be a cool idea but the color difference in the yellow is too different and wouldn't give off a fresh vs faded look. Two projects coming along nicely.
1) Undead halflings.
I recently finished cleaning & building a 2k pt Legion of Nagash force using TTCombat's undead halflings. As every model is resin there was considerable clean up & washing to be done. The clean up on each 1 piece model took as long as if I were building multi-part GW stuff....
And I think I have enough resin scrap to make a whole extra unit.
Last week 1k pts worth of these tiny undead hit the table for a playtest. Mostly skeletons & zombies + necromancer. The intent was to get some xp with thier magic.
It was a close fought game with the elves just barely winning.
2) I'm about 3 models shy of finishing building a Marauder/Darkoath themed Slaves to Darkness force. Lots of Msrauder foot, several horse units, + some chariots.
This week was thier initial outing. 2k vs orks & a solid victory.
A pair of things were made abundantly clear in this game.
First- I'm going to have to have some movement trays. Moving 80 guys on foot (4 units) is a PITA.
Second - bases must be color coded by unit for those foot guys. I had a heck of a time keeping them from getting mixed up when fighting near one another.
And as I've got mixes of ax & flail in each, the fails will need to be further color coded. So "green squad" will have green base lips with dark green for the flails, red/dark red, etc. I want to tell at a glance how many fails I've got in a unit.
Both of these forces need primed/base coated. Especially the undead.
All I need is about 2 hours on a nice day....
So far I've had time but poor weather, or nice weather + busy as ***.
And within the next 2.5 weeks I've got to get at least 500 pts of the undead painted.

I think they FAQ'd our units to not be able to mix loadouts so that particular color coding step might not be needed.

Slowly tipping away at my beastmen force. My productivity painting wise has fallen through the floor due to my job at the moment. But I'm painting up some Nolzur's Aarakroca and Harpies as "bird folk" harpies in a unit of ten, and I also have a Deep Cuts big minotaur (the Labyrinth Guardian) that I'm gonna do as a Doombull. Then it's just the Gnolls, chaos hounds and centaurs to finish.
As a break from all that brown and grey I also painted up some Tzeentch daemons, but I realised one of my screamers is missing a tail so I stopped while I make a new one for it.

Eldarain wrote:I think they FAQ'd our units to not be able to mix loadouts so that particular color coding step might not be needed.
Well that's inconvenient for StD players overall. There are reasons to include mixed weapons in units.
On the personal lv that FAQ change won't affect anything.
1) The force was actually built for more narrative purposes. It's meant for an upcoming scenario/event in our D&D game. I've found that it's easier to run mass battles using miniature wargame rules (with some custom rules to represent the PC party) than run things all with D&D rules. And Sigmar is a nice simple system that the non-wargamers in the group can grok.
I blocked out the forces using the Sigmar pts/unit sizes for convenience, but in the actual game the Marauders will be running about in many individual random groups of between 1 -? as they raid the town.
2) The people I play Sigmar with A) don't know StD or their FAQ at all. And wouldn't care if units have mixed weapons if they did.
They'd read the Tome, they'd read the FaQ, and say something along the lines of "That's stupid, it's supposed to be a chaotic hoard of barbarians waving mixed weapons."
So the color coding is still needed.
3) In the unlikely event that I ever used them in some more formal setting or vs someone anal about it? I'll just sticky tack spare weapons to the back of x models to create legal units. Nothing says the model must be posed wielding the weapon. Or can't be carrying around excess stuff they can't use.
Though truthfully for the price of 1 Marauder unit I'm sure there's something more effective.
76825
Post by: NinthMusketeer
They made the hand weapon the strictly better option anyways.
121430
Post by: ccs
Not relevant to me considering the reason I built the force in the 1st place.
It also functioning as an actual AoS army is just a bonus.
As for how I decided wich weapons to arm my foot & horse squad models with? I rolled a d6 for each individual.
So there's a mix of ax/shield & flail in each unit and a mix of ax/flail/javelin in each horse squad.
Clearly I'm not building for max efficiency. (If I were I'd not be building StD Marauders

I started my Nurgle Army in January, I always wanted a Great Unclean One and with a bit of time on my hands decided to get stuck in. I really enjoy painting Nurgly goodness;
Made up of A GUO (magnetised), Nurgle Daemons and Maggotkin Starter sets, Gnarlmaw, Chaos Knights, Lord of Plagues and a Chaos Sorcerer I've since added 10 more Blightkings and Gutrot Spume (unpainted just now, next to do).
I painted every model one at a time which is a bit of a departure for me. I'm so used to batch painting orks I forgot how much fun it is to just spend a bit of time on each sculpt. These were an absolute treat to do
This is my favourite shot of the GUO, he looks so disturbingly threatening from this angle.
What an awesome sculpt Rotigus is.
I like to get my money's worth from every set and magnetise all my large models to give options and variety. Not so keen on this head though.
10 more Blightkings to add to the army. I was careful to ensure every sculpt was as different as possible. Absolutely loved painting these.
Finished Gutrot Spume last night. Sadly that's it for my Nurgle army for the moment, I'd like to play it first before buying some more models.

Thanks. I liked the look of the white blue and gold as the main colors on the lumineth box art. But felt like stacking on more light colours, like the pale blues, pale yellow/tans seen on the box art was a bit weird. Sure, they're elves from the realm of light, doesn't mean they shouldn't have some dark colors to make the bright ones show up better.

Lot of building & priming lately.
*2k pts worth of Darkoath/Marauder based STD
*2500pts of Undead 1/2lings (LoN)
*the War Cry: Catacombs set
*about 1200 pts worth of Chaos Dwarves
*and now just shy of 1k pts worth of the new Lumineth stuff.
*Tried a few skin tones for my STD & found one I like - for the Chaos Dwarves.
*Wrote up rules for an AoS map based campaign.
*Taught several people AoS & War Cry.
Once I get two more Lumineth Ballista built/primed I really need to get 500 pts of those undead 1/2lings painted up. (I got side tracked with Chaos Dwarves & new elf stuff)

I made a start to my Nighthaunt army over the weekend. I'm working on making a fast but striking scheme as I've got 80 chainrasps that need my attention. I'm imagining that they're invading Chamon from the Necroquake and have taken on a metallic lustre with an oily look to their ethereal parts. Hopefully it makes sense in the fluff, I'm not very well versed in it yet.

I gave the spirit parts a basecoat of baharoth blue, then hit it with ulthuan grey from the top with the airbrush. I then applied a thinned down guilliman blue glaze (should be able to use other bright blues as a glaze now guilliman blue is discontinued) and applied that quite liberally. I finished it off with a white drybrush.

Crazy question for all involved here, but...
Does anyone with a Celennar/Teclis also have one of the Flamespyre/Frostheart Phoenixes? Do the little 'wing inserts' fit onto Celennar's wings?
I have a crazy griffin conversion planned and want to know just how crazy it might become....
56277
Post by: Eldarain
Thank you. It was a unit I wanted as a kid but never grabbed them so when a pile of them were available in trade a few years back I added them to the hoard.
@Kanluwen I don't as I made my own Teclis but that sounds very intriguing and I hope your idea comes to fruition.

Post by: Kanluwen
Friend of mine doesn't want the Celennar from his Teclis kit...so it looks like this is happening!
Gonna use some of the "Build Your Own Hero" rules to figure something out. My first Vanari Lord-Regent had a build issue(the leg attachment point connected to the statuary tells you to attach the fully built kit to the statuary and that leg--boy howdy do not do that! attach the statuary leg part to the mount before putting the front piece of the statue on), so I have a spare mount.
Phoenixes came back into stock on the GW site yesterday, so I have one coming.
Now to decide on frost or fire for the griffin-ish creature.

To be honest, they've kind of grown on me. The Vamp Lord on the back of the Zombie Dragon's pretty damn big himself as well - significantly so.
As someone said - WoW factor - I kind of like the idea that they're bigger than their lackeys due to raw Necromantic power. They certainly have the poses for it.

Finally got hold of Astreia Solbright in Mortal Realms today and spent the afternoon assembling the model.
Its a fabulous model that only cost £8 but there are a few noticable seams around the Dracoline's ankles and snout, which a tiny amount of milliput should fill them nicely. Oh, her left shoulder pad and the rock ontop of the statue head is also in need of filling too. The overall model - especially the base - is incredibly detailed and would recommend the kit even at its full price of £25.
Just an observation but on the website and some videos Astreia has gold plastic, but the one I picked up today was gray.
Game wise she'll be one of two Lord Arcaniums leading a unit of Sequitors, while the other Lord( riding a Gryph-Charger ) leads a unit of Liberators. I'm two Sequitors short of a minimum unit and I think I'd better hurry up and purchase a small pack of ETB sequitors - possibly Storm Strike - before they become discontinued with 3rd edition taking over soon.

In the coming days I have 2 units of sword/shield Skeleton Warriors (LoN tome as the new SB wasn't out yet when our League games began) to paint up beyond their basecoats.
Squad #1 tar pitted a unit of Bone Reaper cav - and killed 3! of them.
Yes, all the skellies were eventually destroyed. But this allowed another unit to A) hold an objective just long enough, B) by killing those 3 riders they ensured that the only way the cav could take that objective was to kill virtually all of the other unit. And there just wasn't time to accomplish that.
Squad #2? This unit stood their ground against Arkhan, put a few wounds on him, and urvived the battle with only 1 model remaining.
Most importantly that 1 model tipped the balance of who controlled the objective in this quadrant.
So TWO rando units of humble skeleton warriors have earned their paint this week.

My Stormcast model collection, by means of Mortal Realms magazine, is shocking leaving most as understrength units.
3 Sequitors including a Prime.
9 Liberators including three Primes.
2 Prosecutors including a Prime.
3 Retributors including a Prime.
...Not much I can do about the Prosecutors nor Retributors but there was an option for the Sequitors and Liberators; the ETB pack of 3 Sequitors and Steelhearts Champions. The later is pretty cool as I only need two standard Liberators and Steelheart himself is practically a Knight-Questor with a bit of conversion work, which would be £17.50 alone but I just ordered all six models for £22.95.
Nighthaunts fared much better with the odd overstrength unit by only a single model, but I've got 9 Grimghast Reapers. By the looks of it the Cairn Wraith is practically the same and I can get him for £8 whenever to make up the whole 10 models. But even without the Reapers I'm still looking at a 1,000 point strong army. Hurrah!
The new Orcs and Goblins aren't my cup of tea, but if the 40K Recruit Edition is anything to go by, the next small starter set for AoS ought to be a great way to expand the Stormhost.

Took me a bit but I got Kemmler done to go along with Krell after he was featured on the Hobby Roundup.
My Soulblights are not only now becoming a painting project... seriously, more effort than my Lizards... but also found themselves themed by Krell and Kemmler as a narrative - it's a Cairns army. Almost entirely Deathrattle, the few Vampires being outcasts and exiles - the Zombie Dragon Lord is going to be a 'black knight' as it were and the 2 Underworlds Vamps are going be painted with tattoos and brands to mark them as escaped prisoners or traitors. Ruleswise as tempting as Legion of Night is (ambush being the armies emerging from the cairns, the immune to battleshock trait etc) I think Legion of Blood just...works better for the Deathrattle buffs.

Krell was very much a rescue that I got for free - involved having to pin the Axe, clean him up and redo his back a bit. I kind of like the curve. It's subtle but it works. It's grown on me to be honest, the idea that the handle is just a bit warped and not perfectly straight seems more organic if anything.

Ah, thank you Mongoose Matt and Thadin, I needed a hit of plastic and paint.
Matt, the army looks great. I see you’ve got some brown bones in there that look ancient… can you include a closer picture of one of the cavalry? I love how it breaks up the appearance and reinforces the idea that these creations are built from multiple sources.
Thadin, these look great! Kudos for going a little brighter than the standard orc. Are you planning on painting the metal bolts on the pink sheilds and armoured bits? I think it would tie the model together a bit more.
…and is that Bernie Sanders on the standard?
112860
Post by: Thadin
I've been tossing around the idea of painting the metal bolts a different color, my main consideration being if I'd rather the models look a little better, to the detriment of my enjoyment painting them. Thus far, being lazy/happy is winning. Maybe once this army is done I'll go back and touch up some little details, but not right now.

“Does my ass make this Drakespawn look small?”
I took a break from working on Daughters of Khaine to make a couple more coldone knights. I absolutely love the Drakespawn models; I remember the Jes Goodwin article explaining the work he put into sketching and understanding lizard anatomy, and it shows.
But the knights were pretty static, especially compared to the models GW is putting out today. I’ve been diving into my huge dark elf and eldar bitzbox to build more dynamic riders to replace my old knights with something that fits the current style. But damn… the size difference is pretty severe. They look like they’re riding scaly Shetland ponies into battle.
Sigh. I wish I could inflate them about 20%.
I’ll use them as allies in my DoK army. Here’s the most recent scheme I’ve decided is finalized ( lol, been saying that for years)

Great colours on those DoK, Mastiff!
I've not really kept up with AoS for a while, having mostly left wargaming behind for DnD these days, but even then I couldn't ignore that GW knocked it out of the park with the hero sculots in Dominion. A quick eBay browse later and I have Yndtrasta, with a Killaboss en route as well. I'm a sucker for angelic/celestial types so Yndrasta got painted nice and quickly, and will orobably make her way to the DnD table as a Solar or Planetar or something because this sculpt is too cool to just sit on a shelf.
I wanted to keep the armour a little more muted than the classic Stormcast gold, but also keep it fairly shiny and unblemished rather than heavily weathered. The wings and tabard were where I let myself play with some stronger colours, I think they frame the model quite nicely. The base has had the swampy battlefield theme enhanced with a skeleton and an orc skull in amongst the reeds and swamp grass, kist to add some interest to the bare areas of it.
It was an aboslute blast to paint, you just can't knock the quality of GW;s plastics these days. Any thoughts welcome!

I managed to finish off Be'Lakor this weekend - the result is less than some of the pieces of art that get posted here, but it is something we mere mortals can aspire to. More to the point, I followed the Warhammer TV how-to-guide pretty closely and can report that Be'Lakor is not only easy to paint up but also very, very fast.
I put together a few tiny notes on the painting process if you fancy diving in with this model yourself: https://ttgamingdiary.wordpress.com/2021/11/02/finding-motivation-and-belakor/
However, with this one, Warhammer TV is your friend.

I hear Sylvaneth are not in a good spot right now, but I started repainting mine and bought a trio of units of Kurnoth Hunters to get me started.
Tree stumps and larger tree basing pieces are from Epicbasing.com, I bought the digital files and printed them so the army looks like they are coming out of a desolate forest.
Also picked up a Souldrain forest (2Wyldwoods+ some other scatter terrain), I have both sets of trees to this level
Now I have my Drycha based and base coated to repaint it, another treelord and about 30 dryads to repaint and rebase. I am considering where to go from there. I have seen some nice 3D designs for Tree Lords and I think I might print one out, but make it BIG, and possibly use the rules for a Mega Gargant for it. I don’t have the Sylvaneth battletome as I’ll wait for a new one eventually. Anybody have any ideas of what else I should add?

@Theophony- those look amazing. I've always been sort of down on the Sylvaneth miniatures, but they look great painted in a realistic style with out the 'spirit colors' everywhere.

Thanks Voss, productive weekend of painting got 15 dryads done. Unfortunately I painted them with the wrong base coat 3 different times . I really need to write down my recipes while I’m painting. I added the resin trees/stumps to all their bases as well. They still need the yellow flowers to have them all match up.
With a Kurnoth Hunter for scale.
Also my version of Drycha, I am not a fan of the spirit bodies so it got a left over Treelord head.
More dryads (I FN hate dryads as they are so weedy and such small contact points), they kept snapping off the bases as I drybrushed them. Also another Treelord all of which need to be repainted and old basing removed.
Also more work on my Drycha stand in.
I got bases set up with 16 more dryads (I FN hate Dryads) and re based and put an initial base layer on another Treelord last night. Went a little crazy with one Dryad climbing one of the taller tree decorations

Trees looking real nice! Love that extra naturalistic take, and props on the Drycha conversion (tho she's like the only angry tree spirit I actually do like). I've also never seen 32mm bases with such tall scenic bits on them, good on you! That's the sort of stuff you see in KOW not AOS.

Funny enough, I was going to make these as a Kings of War army, even started on a few bases for it, but then decided the Kurnoth hunters looked really good and I was more likely to get a game of AoS in than KoW.

In an unfortunate twist, the centerpiece of my new Stormcast army arrived before everything else, and I was too impatient to wait for other things to test a scheme... so, here's Bastian Carthalos, in Tempest Lords colors.

Now that our PTG has wound up/fizzled out I'm back to slooowly continuing to paint the Marauder horde.
I had painted up 1k pts fairly quick with plans to paint just ahead of fielding anything additional as the force grew week to week. The campaign didn't last long enough for me to have to worry about it. :(
So back to the leisurely pace....

Hi, can you advise how you achieved that look please? I take there was a fair bit of airbrushing?
Thanks.

Thank you. It was inspired by the old Wayne England painting from 5th/2nd. By all means do. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
I'll have to get another as it's a ton of fun to paint.

WiP: Work has begun on the 1st Knight Draconis for our upcoming PtG campaign.
No idea what colors he'll end up.
And looking at the PtG rules I'm thinking an effective pure Stormdrake list is going to be pretty tough to field.

Working on 10 ironbreakers and 5 outriders in the unfortunate case I have to play on tournament I'll be running(ie less than max amount of players coming and odd numbers shows up).
After this time to paint trolls and sloggoth for tournament I'll be attending as a player.

Absolutely wonderful! I picked up two of these to make the character and a generic last trip to the Warhammer store. I haven't started working on them yet as I've been splitting my hobby time between Kragnos (almost done with the build!) and my new Eldar. I am really looking forward to getting them out of the box and onto both tables (eventually!)

And the Mindstealer is ready for gaming. It still needs more details( claws ) but otherwise I'm happy with it. Had trouble with the left eye as my fine detail brush just wouldn't curl into a fine tip and kept splitting, as it were, and the head was definitely better painted separately.
I'm toying with the idea of a pack of Chaos Beasts for Warcry, and getting the main core book, but sadly it appears that an all beast'n'monster warband isn't possible. Which is a shame because I'd fancy the Mindstealer leading the other beasts...
It'll see use in 40K but only as an army mascot for my Knight House. Its also a major demon for frostgrave...
