I don't have a project to report on, sadly, but hopefully that's gonna change when the new Orruks come out!
I'm also planning on making a board for AOS over the summer. Haven't settled on what exactly I want it to be. I can get a 4x6 1" thick slab of pink insulation foam for like $12, so I know I'm gonna be basing it on that. Can't decide if I'm gonna go with a fixed, heavily themed board, or something more generic and then lots of individual terrain pieces. Either way, I know for a fact I want to mod one of the Ophidian Archways to have a Citadel tree growing through it.
Any of you all have suggestions/ideas/inspiration for me?
~Tim?

@Wargington, welcome to Dakkadakka and great looking Doombull. (pretty nice terrain set-up too)
I know your pain of having few to play with, I don't go to the clubs often and my schedule is unforgiving for stuff like that so I'm mainly a collector.
Nice to hear your friend gives the game a go, sometimes it feels like we hobbyists are the last of our kind. God bless the internet for proving that wrong. .
Here's hoping you stumble upon a group of AoS players or build one up!
@Tim?, Cool to hear about your future plans for Orruks and a board. ( it'll be nice to see a good paint job on them)
As for the board, well, if it's to suit your Orruks then I'm picturing a beast realm style with lots of terrain like totem poles, rock formations, caves and crude huts or broken towers. Think of something like a Savannah with lots of tribal hints or pieces of a long lost civilization.
I'm picturing the archway in the middle of a Stonehenge plateau(use the stones to make chokepoints so only a few models can fight). Maybe the centerpiece of the board where your Orruks fight it out one-on-one to decide who's the new chieftain, the terrifying spirits within the archway only serving to further prove their tenacity.
Hope that helps!

Now, you see, this is exactly why I started this thread
I managed to get a group of Vargheists very cheap on eBay the other day and was going to put them to one side for now. However, DiscoKing's scheme suitably inspired me, and this weekend...
Not quite as neatly done, but this really is a very easy yet very effective scheme - if you are looking to do some Vargheists in a less pale colour than GW's examples, DiscoKing knows what he is talking about!

Post by: MongooseMatt
This is accurate, but doesn't not really get the models across.
I had a bunch of Skellies on the painting table while doing the Varanguard, and they look very, very vulnerable compared to the Chaos guys. You can see the Varanguard ploughing into a unit of infantry and thinking the little guys would not stand a chance.
Once the Skellies are finished, I'll take a photo illustrating this.
Basically, the Varanguard are much bigger than they might appear!

Post by: CoreCommander
These pictures don't show their width and with that some of the model's impression is lost. I agree that the would look a lot bigger from a different angle.

Until now I had only my Daemons and Lizardmen (which continued growing) for AoS. A couple of days ago I found a new Island of Blood set and got it for a little over 40 pounds. Next purchase will be the AoS starter and then flesh out the elves, skaven, bloodbound, meagre fyreslayers and stormcast a little more. I'm planning on expanding on my games of Order vs Chaos (in the highly fantastical dreamy worlds) and hopefully, in an year or so, I'll be ready to start a brand new Orruk Punishment Party Band....

Filling out my Stormcast army. I felt the gold faces made them somewhat unrelatable, like one of the faceless hordes of scary clones that always fight The Doctor on Doctor Who. So I like to sub out 1/5 of the masks for Sanguinary Guard heads that I feel work very well. I did a little conversion on the relictor to give him a joke on Hamlet, after all, he's always thinking about Death. I also remove the backpack on the Vexillor because I think the halo distracts from the banner that should be the focal point. Will soon have both my 40 piece Khorne and 35 piece Sigmar army done and I can actually play the game for the first time ever. Hope I like it lol

They are cheap and plentiful on eBay. Only crappy thing is only three of the heads work, the others have cyborg eyes and Bane masks and what not, but they are cheap enough it doesn't matter. I give two out of ten troops the heads and also the heroes that are easy conversions. I.e. Not the Lprd Celestant. Hope that helps.

With the news of a points system coming out, it has inspired me to finish stripping my High Elves and start rebasing them. Here is what I am assembling and getting ready:
Tyrion (still in mail)
Teclis
Allarielle
Korhil
Eltharion the Blind (Oh yes, will be using as a Prince)
Army Box Battle Standard Bearer
Mage on Foot (Still in mail)
Mounted Mage (Still in Mail)
20x White Lions of Chrace
20x Shadow Warriors
20x Dragon Princes
10x Ellyrian Reavers
2x Repeater Bolt Throwers
I am basing them on 30mm round lipped bases for the infantry, and 50mm round lipped bases for the bolt Throwers and cavalry. I will get some pictures up once I get them all on based! Now I just need to get myself an Alith Anar and my army is complete for what I want it to be.

angelofvengeance wrote:Nothin like a bit of nightmare fuel for a beastmen army, eh? Lol. Nice Jabberslythe!! Is he resin?
Yes, and I hated building it. Will never buy another resin model if I can help it.
It has bubbles everywhere from the mold, you have to sand the crap out of it, heat it up in boiling water to fix how warped it is, and use a lot of liquid green stuff.
I couldn't bend the front claw/ground pieces back into shape; so I had to raise the base using some dry clay, sand, and liquid super glue.
The wings were crooked as hell too. Tried my best but one of them is still a little bent.
You can see the difference with GW's stock photo. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Jabberslythe
He's still pretty cool looking, can't wait to see him animated in total war.

I already made a few posts in my P&M blog here, because I don't want to crowd up this thread so if you want to see more of the army:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/686966.page
A few followers of Tzeentch had already joined the Decadent Host - Turning on their disfigured and mutated masters and instead choosing to dawn purple/blue cloaks and serve the Returned Prince of Slaanesh (he was just too handsome to resist).
With their knowledge, Sigvald has saught out, defeated and enslaved a Lord of Change to use as an oracle and guide in his search for Slaanesh.
An unfortunate result of these new tzeentchian servants is the annoyance and indifference of Sigvald, who hates the sight of twisted deamons and frail sorcerers, and thus refuses to acknowledge them unless in battle. Therefore all of Sigvald's former tzeenchian subjects have either dawned masks, or are hard at work devising new spells and magics to change their bodies with more handsome and beautiful features like their master.

Ahhhhhhh I was going to ask why you went with a Warbringer, which definitely doesn't seem like the most popular of Verminlord varieties, though he's my own favorite (but I play heavy Stormvermin Skaven, so he fits both rules and fluff for me). Not a clue what I want to do for colour scheme. Just lost my job (lucky to get it when I did a few weeks ago) so will not be able to get Silver Tower. Not sure how to paint it yet, any ideas?
O H M Y G O D !
I think I am just going to try and copy you. Of course I can't do 1% greatness of what you did, but I love it. Had trouble thinking on how I wanted to paint my guys, love what you did. Thanks for the inspiration.

Some really great stuff here!
@timwrightii I'd suggest another brighter blue on the weapons as a highlight or 'glow' effect which you can get easily with drybrushing. Even easier if you have an airbrush.

Thanks for the feedback Dez. These guys aren't quite finished. I do the OSL with an airbrush as the last step. They definitely do need some more highlighting.

Grumlok and Gazbag. Finished a few days ago as an entry into the orruk community competition on the Age of Sigmar Facebook page. Doubt it would even be considered since it's an old model and wouldn't fit with the goal of selling current models. But still fun to paint.
Makes me a little nostalgic for warhammer online.

The undead force slowly grows (rises) with some Spirit Hosts and a Cairn Wraith:
And a Chimera:

Everyone seems to be able to make these wraiths look awesome (I'd have some if not for my fantasy obssession with Order vs Chaos - no place for death on the eternal battlefields ). Also the Nihilakh Oxyde (certainly looks like it) on the Cairn Wraith's scythe is my all time favourite technical paint.

@Parad wow is that demon head? I'm missing the head but this whole thing looks stunning.

Post by: Paradigm
The head is some generic demon/beastman head, I painted it quite Khornate but there's nothing on the sculpt to say either way what it's meant to be, I'm not familliar enough with GW's demons or Beastmen to say if it's a direct analogue to something (the priest is not a GW mini). Not quite sure how he severed it with a hammer. but I guess with Sigmar's blessing anything is possible!

Ha, he'd kick my ass at that, I've done 30-odd minis since starting AoS about a 3 weeks ago, that's nothing to the 1000 Matt's done in the last year! I think in such a challenge I'd just honourably fall on my brush/sword!
I have made a couple more additions to my force though!
A Freeguild Sergeant, to be joined by his unit in the coming days (5 done, 8 to go!)
And an Aelf Prince/Dragon Noble/Anointed to lead my Aelven contingent:
Hero group shot, hopefully this band of warriors will be hitting the field some time soon as I want to try GMG's 'Realm Quest' battleplan a couple of times while I build up the rest of the force for some proper battles.

This thread is super intimidating for mere mortals... I have been slowly making my way through a backlog of maybe 120 assorted Hobbit/LotR models (true-scale 28mm, so paint up VERY quickly), and suddenly I come home and the wife has ordered....
- Thunderbeast Host (Engine of the Gods, Oldblood on Carnosaur, Stegadon, and 3-Ripperdactyles
- Additional 3 Ripperdactyles
- 30 Saurus Guard
- Skink Starpriest
- Skink Priest
- Astrolith Banner
- 20 Chameleon Skinks
Sigh.... I guess i'm going to need to combined powers of Matt and Para if those are going to see the gaming table before the summer is out. :-p

Well, I decided to give it a fling (we are likely just going to convert everything to use the LotR ruleset anyways, since AoS also uses round bases might as well try it out).
I have rebased my Dwarfs and my Night Goblin clan (which was easy because they weren't glued to their bases yet ).
I also rebased my Island of Blood High Elves and Skaven (who were glued to their bases). The swordmasters went really easy, but the seaguard was a pain. I cut off a lot of foots but I managed to repair most of the damage. The Skaven on the other hand were not so lucky, a lot of them are ruined now.
Plastic cement is totally awesome, but maybe it is a bit too good at what it does. The bond is stronger than the actual surrounding plastic in many cases. Not very handy when you need the parts to seperate again.
I am kinda happy now that I never glued most of my fantasy models to their bases

I need help with my Silver Tower Stormcast. I'm using a SW head on him and it looks really good, but I could glue it on in two different ways and BOTH look really cool.
Pose A, the heroic sword swinger and the models' standard pose. Downside is that the shield arm looks a bit awkward from the front
http://i.imgur.com/3rGoJvs.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/mxRtRFF.jpg
Pose B, the advancing tank. Looks really good IMO, very menacing, but the fit of the joint is not as good and the pics don't really show how aggressive he looks when mst of him is blocked by the shield and only an angry face and a sword stick out.

I would say A for Silver Tower, but B is you are going to use it with other Sigmarines for Age of Sigmar game play.

Post by: NH Gunsmith
I really like B. That is what I would go with.
77159
Post by: Paradigm
I'd go B, but if possible bring the shield fully vertical rather than tilted, it better suits the advancing pose Not sure how easy that would be, my guess would be cut the arm horizontally just above the elbow then tilt the whole thing further up. Any detail you'd have to cut would in theory be covered by the shield anyway.

Speaking of Silver Tower, if anyone (preferably inside the UK) who's bought it and isn't a Stormcast fan is looking to get rid of the Knight Questor at a sensible price or in exchange for some comission work, please let me know! I don't want to add a full Stormcast contingent to my army just yet, but the KQ's fluff is suited to being a 'lone wolf' type addition.

Stormcast look AMAZING alongside Freeguild models too in my opinion. You really get the feeling of them being Demi-gods when you have some little guys to compare them with - and they almost give off a similar vibe to the awesome inquisimunda projects with true scale marines alongside deviants and other scum.
Oops, I'm going a bit off tangent.

And at that point you might as well flesh out those awesome Skaven you were doing so you have an army for each of the Grand Alliances :-)
77159
Post by: Paradigm
Hmm... Maybe. Chaos is the one Grand Alliance I can't easily fit into this army's narrative, so I'd really have to do them as a force on their own/part of a larger Chaos army, which is not entirely off the cards but not something I'd go for right away... There's also the fact that those Skaven took ages per model with the million layers of grime NMM armour! The Undead I can justify because in their heads they're still Old World Brets who think they're still merrily crusading away, the Orruks I could sort of fit in on the basis that as this ragtag band goes along it becomes apparent that if you hang around the unlucky bunch you get some dead good scraps now and then! That or I go down the somewhat Pratchett-esque route of having them doing their best to fit in with the good guys, skull-bashing habits aside!

Well, continuing to lurk on this thread has finally got me to start painting! Was at a stand still waiting for more bases to come in to finish all the infantry (after my last order of bases was not the ones I wanted but sat at the office in my apartment too long for me to return because the post office didn't leave a slip saying a package had come in like usual... Whoops). So I ordered 30 more of the 30mm lipped round bases to finish the other ten White Lions, and 20 Shadow Warriors.
Got the first unit of ten White Lions based and primed. I thought it would be fun to use blue as the primary color for an army for the first time. Really having fun with it. Hopefully over the weekend I can get all of the blues and greys for them done to post a picture of my start into Age of Sigmar.

I also made a small gobo (spider themed) army to go with the scuttlers using left over conversion fodder. That and i have painted some DE executioners and turned the khaine statue into a walking avatar for a mini dark elf army. woop woop

What do you mean chop up one and swap bits around? I know what you are saying but I mean what minis are you talking about. Coming into this as a newbie so basically they are all the same to me. I don't want to say put chaos arms on a Stormcast. I know there is no doubles of that but using it as an example because I wouldn't know what shouldn't belong to what and then I just screwed up.

I know there is no doubles of that but using it as an example because I wouldn't know what shouldn't belong to what and then I just screwed up. Ah fair point i will endeavor to post some pic's when my misses gets home her camera is the only one we own capable enough to show minis off. As for describing changes, lets take the tzangors and cultists, i swapped the shields so now each unit has one of each instead of two the same. thats the only change where parts swapped between different units but you could swap weapons between them if you wish, in stead i cut the arms off the tzangors and swapped them with each other, so now there is one with axes and shield, hook sword n shield, hook sword n axes, two axes, 2 handed axes and lastly the other two handed axe i swapped the axe head for a standard (zinch one from a chaos space marines box). By looking at the joints carefully you can make nice cuts so no filler is really need (most of the time). For example the cultists have a spear dude, i swapped one of the spears with the guy who has the shield and kopesh and i was able to get him into a two handed pose which is a bit tricky but looks really nice imo. Another couple of examples, the death runner, i swapped his weapons so that they are wielding them in different hands, i was tempted to give them another weapon but as its supposed to be an illusion i thought a mirror image might be fun. i also move the limbs a bit on one and bent the tails on both so they are less one dimensional. Blue horrors cut off their hands and swapped them around, one of which i cut the flamer fingers off one and normal finger off another and swapped the fingers. again bending the legs n tentacles slightly. brimstones split the pairs in half then swapped them over. pink horror reposed arms gave a new sword from bits box and gave him two books to hold from my bits box. carved the familars up a bit, swapped the scutters limbs up a bit ect ect home that helps soz its a bit rambling, obviously no storm cast chaos hero mash up, i like to keep at one of each thing and mostly leave anything thats unique alone... mostly lol. Personally love converting kit bashing scratch building and sculpting most. As long as once you swap stuff over it still kinda represents what the rules want off that model its far game. ps all cuts done with sharp scalpel type hobby knife. cut about 1/2mm on all side then you can carefully wiggle it off and clean up both sides flat. i generally dont cut all the way through the knife is too thick even on a scalpel and with distort or damage in some way parts. when bending support as much as posing and do lots of small bends watching for stress marks on the material or it can snap...(if it does dont be too disheartened plastic glue fixes a multitude of sins.) if worried practice making cuts and bends on the left over sprue or other less precious models. .

On another Silver Tower note, I couldn't believe how fiddly those Elf models are... Bits as small as pinheads and as thin as pieces of string, just crazy. I will give a no-prize to anyone who managed to clip, clean and attach the dark elf assassin chest piece without breaking it.

Quoted for truth. Not done Mistweaver yet, but the Tenebrael Shard was quite fiddly. Managed to get the chest piece on OK though(zero breakage). It was the little strips of flesh and hooks bit that I found most fiddly to do, since you have to get it in under the hair and over the leg to fit it to the waist.
Gaunt Summoner's dagger hand was verrry flimsy. Had to be real careful cleaning that so the flame didn't snap off.

Love the armies you guys are posting.
Decided a while age to pick up some AoS minis as while I don't really care about the game I love painting just for the sake of painting. Went for the super original ( Ok, maybe not) idea of making a haunted forest themed army mixing sylvaneth, vampire counts and whatever beasts/monsters I can imagine living in the forest. I'll use the "witch" from the mortis engine as a necromancer to lead the army. The idea is that she was living in her hut in the forest peacefully until someone got her upset and now she'll enslave every being living in the forest to get revenge, or something. I'm not very good at coming up with this stuff....
I'm going to do an autumn coloured forest with blueish spirits. It took a lot of attempts and a couple of meh spirit hosts until I finally managed to get an at least decent blue ethereal effect for my ghosties.
My Tomb Banshee is the one that I like the most so far regarding the ethereal effect, what do you guys think about it?

Thanks everyone for the kind feedback, the doomseeker is definitely the best model i have painted!
@Bottle
Yes i decided to use the webstore colour schemes for the doomseeker and mistweaver. You should give the green metal a go, its easier than it looks. It's all wetblending which is very intuitive once you start.
Colours are
Incubi darkness with lahmian medium and water
Kabalite green with lahmian medium and water
white with lahmian medium and water
Quick directions:
the purpose of the water and the medium is to act as a retardant to allow you to wetblend the surfaces. Just apply a base coat of incubi darkness, then when its dry, add incubi darkness to the dark part, wash you brush quickly, and apply kabalite green to the lighter part. Next draw the wet paints into each other to blend the colours. go back and forth until your happy with the gradient. after this do the same but with white at the lightest point and kabalite at the mid tone.
@haechi
I like those round based chariots, they suit the models really well.
Those seraphons look awesome. Also good use of the maw crusher, it fits perfectly with the other scaled beasts. I wonder if the magmadroth would transition well into this army too? In any case I want a seraphon army now...
@Alathia
Nice banshee, i think the hair transition is really good. Those colours with an autumn base will work really well! Also the blue ethereal scheme is awesome. I have the same model painted the way duncan did for the games workshop nagash video and it looks gash compared to yours!

I thought about the magmadroth as well but I don't know what count as it would be. Also it has runes all over and is ver wave-y in its style compared to the more bulky and angular scales of other seraphons.

Off course. These are my findings with the airbrush (i have a renegade krome).
Paints for the mistweaver:
Purple and pink transitions
1. Model Air Hexed Lichen (for the purple. lay this down as a base coat)
2. Game air dead white (the pink is thin and will not stand out so we need a white base coat. create a bright white point where you want the pink to be the most intense and then airbrush a transition between the purple and bright white with the white.)
3. Game Air Warlord purple ( god this colour sucks, its so thin. Its purpose is to soften the transition between the pink and purple as required. just light sprays with very little paint otherwise it will spider everywhere.)
4. Model Colour Fluro Magenta (for the eye bleeding, intense pink. Apply this colour over the white to complete the transition.)
5. go back and forth between these colours as required. Basecoat again with white if you want a brighter pink.
Turquoise trims and weapons blades
1. Model colour turquoise (any turquoise will do)
2. Black (i used army painter black as it was the closest to reach at the time)
3. Game air dead White (i have a lot of trouble with white as i will highlight below.)
Copper
1.Game air brassy brass
2. Model air steel (edge highlight)
Silver
1. Model air steel
Paints for the Ogroid Thaumarturge
Its still WIP but so far:
Blue
1. Game Air Hexed Lichen (darkest parts)
2. Game Air Imperial Blue (mid tone)
3. Game Air Ultramarines blue (light part)
4. Progressive mix of game air dead white into the ultramarines blue (for the lightest parts)
Turquoise
1. Model colour turquoise (any turquoise will do)
2. Progressive mix of game air dead white into the turquoise (for the lightest parts)
General tips
1. You dont need air colours, you can just thin normal paints as required, and some times this is better. Good example is the mist weaver. The pink you get from the fluro magenta is better than any air colour. All you need to do is thin the paint properly (as point 2 will advise)
2. Get airbrush thinner. I used the thin my paints with water but its surprisingly hard. i find airbrush thinner is more forgiving. I initially gave up on the airbrush until i tried the airbrush thinner...
3. Learn to use the airbrush dual action trigger and not the paint limiter dial. By this i mean you use the airbrush but constantly modulate your trigger finger from releasing paint to only releasing air. If you go watch videos from awaken realms, he does this in his tutorials. This method allows you to avoid clogs and limit your tip dry (from my experience). If you have paint issues, just point your airbrush away and give it a blast (point it into some paper towel or your airbrush cleaning bottle thing).
4. Tip dry is something you have live with. Just clean the tip with your cleaning brush every now and again.
5. Go watch next level painting on you tube. The best tip i got from him was the backflow (gangsta gumbo). You cover the tip of the airbrush with paper towel and use the airbrush. This creates a backflow and the air will exit through the paint cup. This should clear clogs and also mix you paint!
6. If you want to paint details, thin your paints more and dial down your pressure.
7. Clean your brush after every use.
Good luck on your airbrushing journey! If you need any more information let me know.

I put sand on before undercoating then from black it's a basecoat of mournfang brown, drybrush of steel legion drab, light drybrush of tyrant skull, some static grass and some of GW's middenheim tufts ( I think that's what they're called). Some of the larger rocks I just did black and drybrushed tones of grey.
I'm going to use the same basing for all my units and factions, so I wanted something simple that could be easily replicated and would match my gaming mat/table.
